Abstract Many older patients with COVID-19 likely have co-morbid osteoporosis. We investigated the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients with osteoporosis. This was a retrospective cohort study using national claims data from Korea encoded in the common data model. Patients aged ≥ 50 years diagnosed with COVID-19 infection between January 2020 and April 2022 were included and stratified into two groups according to a history of osteoporosis. Background Optimal anticoagulation therapy reduces the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of prior anticoagulation therapy with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) on ischemic stroke outcomes in patients with nonvalvular AF. Methods We enrolled 487 patients with ischemic stroke and nonvalvular AF between January 2013 and August 2020. The infarct volume was semi-automatically evaluated using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were categorized into no anticoagulation, undertreated anticoagulation, and sufficient anticoagulation (with VKA or DOAC) groups based on their pre-admission anticoagulant use, and the clinical characteristics were compared between the groups. Results Among the included patients, 374 (76.8%), 50 (10.3%), 10 (2.1%), and 53 (10.9%) patients received no anticoagulants, were undertreated with a VKA, were sufficiently treated with a VKA, and received DOACs, respectively, before stroke. Multivariate analysis revealed that optimal anticoagulation was independently associated with a low risk of severe stroke (odds ratio, 0.553; 95% confidence interval, 0.308–0.992; P=0.047). Additionally, the DOAC group had a significantly smaller mean infarct volume than the other groups (45.8±73.2, 45.0±69.1, 30.9±24.7, and 12.6±24.9 mL in the no anticoagulation, insufficient VKA, sufficient VKA, and DOAC groups, respectively; P=0.011). Conclusion Sufficient pre-stroke anticoagulation is associated with mild stroke severity and good outcomes at 3 months post-stroke. Additionally, pre-stroke DOAC treatment is associated with smaller infarct volume in patients with ischemic stroke and nonvalvular AF.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most prevalent type of hematopoietic malignancy. Despite recent therapeutic advancements, the high relapse rate associated with extramedullary involvement remains a challenging issue. Moreover, therapeutic targets that regulate the extramedullary infiltration of AML cells are still not fully elucidated. The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) is known to influence the progression and migration of solid tumors; however, its role in AML is largely unknown. This study explored the roles of AHR in the invasion and migration of AML cells. We found that suppressed expression of AHR target genes correlated with an elevated relapse rate in AML. Treatment with an AHR agonist on patient-derived AML cells significantly decreased genes associated with leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, cell adhesion, and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. These results were further confirmed in THP-1 and U937 AML cell lines using AHR agonists (TCDD and FICZ) and inhibitors (SR1 and CH-223191). Treatment with AHR agonists significantly reduced Matrigel invasion, while inhibitors enhanced it, regardless of the Matrigel’s stiffness. AHR agonists significantly reduced the migration rate and chemokinesis of both cell lines, but AHR inhibitors enhanced them. Finally, we found that the activity of AHR and the expression of NMIIA are negatively correlated. These findings suggest that AHR activity regulates the invasiveness and motility of AML cells, making AHR a potential therapeutic target for preventing extramedullary infiltration in AML.

Since cyberattacks have become sophisticated in the form of advanced persistent threats (APTs), predicting and defending the APT attacks have drawn lots of attention. Although there have been related studies such as attack graphs, Hidden Markov Models, and Bayesian networks, they have four representative limitations; (i) non-standard attack modeling, (ii) lack of data-driven approaches, (iii) absence of real-world APT dataset, and (iv) high system dependability. In this paper, we propose Bayesian ATT&CK Network (BAN) which is based on system-independent data-driven approach. Specifically, BAN is based on Bayesian network, which adopts structure learning and parameter learning to model APT attackers with the MITRE ATT&CK® framework. The trained BAN aims to predict upcoming attack techniques and derives corresponding countermeasures. In addition, we prepare datasets via both automatic and manual labeling to overcome the data insufficiency issues of APT prediction. Experimental results show that BAN successfully contributes to handling APT attacks, given the best parameters extracted from extensive evaluations.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have attracted much attention as displays for small form factor augmented reality (AR) devices. To realize glass-like thin and wide field of view (FoV) AR devices, we designed a display module with a high aspect ratio microdisplay and a thin optical component. For the high aspect ratio microdisplay, we developed the color OLED microdisplay with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a 0.8-inch diagonal ∼2,490-ppi CMOS backplane. To express color and reduce optical crosstalk, we fabricated the color filter (C/F) patterning directly on the white OLED. We also developed a pin mirror lens with 11 pin mirrors to improve the optical efficiency and quality with a thin lens. By combining the microdisplay with LetinAR’s pin mirror lens, we successfully demonstrated an AR device with a wide horizontal FoV of 46° but with a small form factor 4 mm lens.

This study examined the urban structure of colonial Seoul in the 1930s, the capital city of Korea under the rule of the Japanese empire, by adopting quantitative geographical methods. We utilized a job accessibility index to operationalize the urban structure. We also used geographic information science (GIScience) analysis tools to digitize neighborhood-level sociodemographic and parcel-level business location information from historical materials. The results illustrated several findings that were not revealed by previous studies based on qualitative approaches. First, transit-based job accessibility (13.392) is significantly higher (p < 0.001) than walk-based job accessibility (10.575). Second, there is a Γ-shaped area with higher job accessibility, including the central part of colonial Seoul. Third, Japanese-dominant neighborhoods had significantly (p < 0.001) higher transit-based (27.156) job accessibility than Korean-dominant neighborhoods (9.319). Fourth, transit-based job accessibility is not significantly correlated with the unemployment rate overall. Although colonial Seoul was the seventh-largest city of the Japanese empire, few practical planning actions were taken to resolve urban issues, unlike the other large cities in mainland Japan.

Transportation is a key element to understanding the socio-spatial structure of colonial cities and the lives of individuals living under colonial governance. This study investigates the disparity in transit-based travel time between colonial rulers (Japanese) and subjects (Koreans) in Colonial Seoul (*Keijo*) in 1936 using modern GIS and open-source transport analysis tools. Findings suggest a significant disparity in travel time to a major urban facility (i.e., City Hall) between the two population groups of the largest colonial city in the Korean peninsula.

Two strings of the same length are order isomorphic if their relative orders are the same. The order-preserving pattern matching problem is to find all substrings of text T that are order isomorphic to pattern P when T(|T|=n) and P(|P|=m) are given. An O(mn+nqlogq+q!)-time algorithm using the O(m+q!) space for the order-preserving pattern matching problem has been proposed utilizing fingerprints of q-grams based on the factorial number system and the bad character heuristic. In this paper, we propose an O(mn+2q)-time algorithm using the O(m+2q) space for the order-preserving pattern matching problem, but utilizing fingerprints of q-grams converted to binary numbers. A comparative experiment using three types of time series data demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is faster than existing algorithms because it reduces the number of order isomorphism tests.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how a novice teacher (researcher) has developed his assessment literacy in elementary physical education (PE), and thereby investigating what cultural, micropolitical and sociological factors have impacted on his enactment of assessment literacy. Method: Adopting autoethnography, this study investigated theresearcher as a subject and an object of research in the pursuit of extending the personal to the social. The 4 years of narrative data collected from the researcher’s reflective journals, self-recalling, and artefacts on PE assessment were analysed using structural narrative analysis and reiterative process. Findings and discussion: The findings revealed that thenovice teacher developed his assessment literacy in a chronological order: (a) assessment illiterate, (b) assessment literate, and (c) assessment aliterate. The cultural, micropolitical and sociological factors that have impacted on the teachers’ enactment of assessment literacy were discussed: (a) rampant complacency in elementary teaching culture: a bad judge or a good bystander?, (b) uniform culture of grade-level teams, and (c) distorted PE professionalism focusing on “hows”, not “whys”. Conclusion: The novice teacher’s enactment of assessment literacy in elementary PE was not only related to himself but also to the school culture, grade level team, and PE professionalism where he belonged.

The sugar beet cyst nematode, Heterodera schachtii is a well known pathogen on Chinese cabbage in the highland fields of Korea. However, a race of cyst forming nematode with close morphological resemblance to H. trifolii was recently isolated from the same Chinese cabbage fields. Morphological species differentiation between the two cyst nematodes is challenging, with only minor differences between them. Thus, this study described the newly intercepted H. trifolii population, and reviewed morphological and molecular characteristics conceivably essential in differentiating the two nematode species. A comparison of morphometric measurements of both infective juveniles and vulval cones of cysts showed significant differences between the two cyst nematodes. When total RNA and genomic DNA were extracted from a mixed field population, COI genes and ITS regions were clearly amplified with primers of the two Heterodera species, suggesting that Heterodera population collected from the Chinese cabbage field consisted of a mixture of two species. COI and ITS of H. trifolii were predominantly amplified from nucleotides prepared from H. trifolii monoxenic population whereas those of H. schachtii were strongly detected in H. schachtii monoxenic cultures. Thus, this study confirms the coexistence of the two species in some Chinese cabbage fields; and the presence of H. trifolii in Korea is reported here for the first time.

While kinesiology scholars have focused on how future faculty members are socialized, recruited into, and prepared for academia, limited attention has been given to the apprenticeship of observation for faculty roles when college students first develop impressions and initial understandings of faculty work. This qualitative study aimed to understand undergraduate kinesiology students' perceptions and beliefs about faculty roles and careers in higher education. Data were collected from 58 undergraduate kinesiology students at a large doctoral-granting institution in the Midwest region of the U.S. The findings were communicated through three themes: (a) incomplete understanding of faculty work limits motivation to pursue faculty careers; (b) positive associations but distal relationships with faculty through coursework; and (c) research involvement fosters an understanding of research process and faculty work. This study has implications not only for the recruitment and socialization of future faculty, but also for building public trust in kinesiology and higher education.

Purpose: Grounded in the occupational socialization theory, this study explored how gender interacted with and influenced socialization experiences in the careers of South Korean female physical educators. Specific attention was directed toward the gendered experiences that female teachers experienced and the coping strategies to navigate them. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative case study design, and the participants were 15 female secondary school physical educators. Data were collected through life story timelines, critical incident writings, and individual interviews. Results: Four themes emerged: (a) unwelcomed and invisible; (b) experiencing a physicality-driven hierarchy; (c) dual marginalization as female physical educators; and (d) retreating, masking, redefining, or leaving to cope with challenges. Discussion/Conclusions: The findings indicated that female physical educators experienced being dual-marginalized due to the interplay between gender and subject matter. In response to the challenges, some conformed to their gender role to be safe; however, other teachers employed various strategies to overcome the status quo.

Localization is an essential service for numerous applications in wireless ad hoc networks. In particular, cooperative localization is a widely used technique for improving performance by utilizing information obtained from adjacent sensors. In general, distributed localization in ad hoc networks shows relatively low performance compared to centralized localization. This is partly due to the lack of information and partly because of error propagation. In this article, we propose a localization algorithm considering the location uncertainty of reference nodes. The proposed algorithm uses a dilution of precision, depending on the geometric deployment of reference nodes, as a representative value of uncertainty. The proposed algorithm estimates the position of a target node and re-estimates positions of reference nodes concurrently. Using the proposed algorithm, we can reduce the effect of accumulated error propagation and enhance the accuracy of estimated node positions. We verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm and compare its performance with that of other localization schemes under several circumstances by performing simulations. The results show that the overall performance of the proposed algorithm outperformed that of other schemes.

Silicon nitride (SiNx) thin films using 1,3-di-isopropylamino-2,4-dimethylcyclosilazane (CSN-2) and N2 plasma were investigated. The growth rate of SiNx thin films was saturated in the range of 200−500 °C, yielding approximately 0.38 Å/cycle, and featuring a wide process window. The physical and chemical properties of the SiNx films were investigated as a function of deposition temperature. As temperature was increased, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis confirmed that a conformal thin film was obtained. Also, we developed a three-step process in which the H2 plasma step was introduced before the N2 plasma step. In order to investigate the effect of H2 plasma, we evaluated the growth rate, step coverage, and wet etch rate according to H2 plasma exposure time (10−30 s). As a result, the side step coverage increased from 82% to 105% and the bottom step coverages increased from 90% to 110% in the narrow pattern. By increasing the H2 plasma to 30 s, the wet etch rate was 32 Å/min, which is much lower than the case of only N2 plasma (43 Å/min).

Two-component systems (TCSs) are critical to the pathogenesis of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). We mutated 55 of 62 genes annotated as responsive regulators (RRs) of TCSs in the genome of Xoo strain PXO99A and identified 9 genes involved in Xoo virulence. Four (rpfG, hrpG, stoS, and detR) of the 9 genes were previously reported as key regulators of Xoo virulence and the other 5 have not been characterized. Lesion lengths on rice leaves inoculated with the mutants were shorter than those of the wild type and were significantly restored with gene complementation. The population density of the 5 mutants in planta was smaller than that of PXO99A at 14 days after inoculation, but the growth curves of the mutants in rich medium were similar to those of the wild type. These newly reported RR genes will facilitate studies on the function of TCSs and of the integrated regulation of TCSs for Xoo pathogenesis.

Cutaneous ciliated cyst was described as a painless cyst occurring on the lower limbs of women between the ages of 15 and 30 years. The cysts are typically lined by ciliated cuboidal to columnar epithelium with pseudostratified areas and focal squamous metaplasia is occasionally present. Immunohistochemical studies have demonstrated that the cysts are PR and ER positive, similar to the epithelia of the fallopian tubes. However, outliers of cutaneous ciliated cysts, including those in male patients and in unexpected locations such as the scalp, finger, and scapular area, have been reported. Thus, some hypotheses have been proposed including the Mullerian heterotopias, ciliated metaplasia of eccrine sweat glands, and embryonic remnants of the cloacal membrane. We report a rare case of cutaneous ciliated cyst on the left shoulder of a 7-year-old boy and this is the eighth case of cutaneous ciliated cyst in male patients. Moreover, through reviewing the articles, we try to propose the classification of the cutaneous ciliated cysts into the cutaneous Mullerian cysts and the ciliated cutaneous eccrine cysts.
