Comparison between the Maxwell demon and a planar electrode has been revisited with an in-depth analysis of whether the angular momentum trap of the Maxwell demon indeed provides better energy selectivity than a small planar electrode that absorbs electrons indiscriminately. The evolutions of the EEDF under the influence of these heating techniques is directly analyzed, as well as the resultant plasma parameters. Experimental results show that the Maxwell demon indeed provides better energy selectivity as shown by its better retention of hot electrons than an indiscriminative absorption surface, which in turn results in smaller disturbance to the plasma potential a smaller reduction of the plasma density in the heating process. Experimental result also shows no electron heating when the demon is replaced by an ion-sheath forming large electrode, this is consistent with Mackenzie’s original results (MacKenzie et al 1971 App. Phys. Lett. 18 529). While it is possible to obtain the exact same plasma parameters replacing the Maxwell demon with a suitably sized planar plate and additional plasma parameters control, for experiments sensitive to the exact processes from which plasma parameters are formed, one should not overlook the physical differences of these heating methods.

The problem of kinetic thermal effect on propagation characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) radiation incident on a hot Maxwellian magnetoplasma slab near a metallic surface is investigated. Reflection, absorption, and transmission rates are calculated numerically for a set of parameters that may be suitable for stealth plasma together with other applications. Numerical results, compared with those obtained using cold and warm plasma fluid models, show thermal enhancement of absorption of a transverse right circularly polarized EM wave propagating along an applied magnetostatic field within a slab of Vlasov plasma. Propagation characteristics of the right circular wave with a full kinetic expression for the refractive index are recovered in the limiting cases of magnetically biased cold and warm plasmas.

Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) program is strongly focused on solving the scientific and technological issues in steady-state high performance plasma operation in preparation for ITER operation as well as the design basis for DEMO. In this regards, KSTAR has made significant advances in developing long pulse and high performance plasma scenarios utilizing the advantage of the fully superconducting tokamak. Ten-year of KSTAR operation showed the outstanding progress in the plasma control extending the operation window of the plasma discharges achieving the H-mode up to 1 MA in plasma current, up to 72 s in flat top duration, and up to 2.16 in elongation. In addition to the long pulse discharge, high performance discharges with high betas (βN ~ 3) could be achieved in the broad range of edge safety factor (q95) without external error field correction. The unique features of the KSTAR device (magnetic accuracy with extremely low error fields, steady-state capable heating systems, in-vessel control coils, and advanced imaging and profile diagnostics) has been fully exploited to explore the unveiled physics as well as to exploring the systematic solution for suppression of edge localized mode (ELM) crash. Achieved examples are the record long pulse of H-mode operation without an ELM crash (~ 30 s up to date), and progress in the fundamental transport physics through systematic study using these unique capabilities. Based on the previous research results, intensive research will be followed to explore the advanced high beta operation (βN ~ 4) with fully suppressed harmful MHD instabilities aiming the integrated solution for DEMO. In this regards, an additional current drive systems and in-vessel structures will be upgraded.

A neural network solving Grad-Shafranov equation constrained with measured magnetic signals to reconstruct magnetic equilibria in real time is developed. Database created to optimize the neural network's free parameters contain off-line EFIT results as the output of the network from $1,118$ KSTAR experimental discharges of two different campaigns. Input data to the network constitute magnetic signals measured by a Rogowski coil (plasma current), magnetic pick-up coils (normal and tangential components of magnetic fields) and flux loops (poloidal magnetic fluxes). The developed neural networks fully reconstruct not only the poloidal flux function $\psi\left( R, Z\right)$ but also the toroidal current density function $j_\phi\left( R, Z\right)$ with the off-line EFIT quality. To preserve robustness of the networks against a few missing input data, an imputation scheme is utilized to eliminate the required additional training sets with large number of possible combinations of the missing inputs.

We develop a filtered absolute extreme ultraviolet (AXUV) diode array to measure the time evolution of the soft x-ray spectrum in the energy range of 1-10 keV. AXUV-HS5, the detector, has a fast rise time of 0.7 ns, a wide energy detection range, and high accessibility. We use Geant4 simulations to design an appropriate filter set for flat-and-sharp virtual channels (VCs), where a filter with no spectral edge removes large tails of the response curves. A Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) method, sensitive to the expected spectral function, is improved to reliably generate a continuous radiation spectrum, by utilizing spectral information from the least-squares (LS) method that reconstructs a discrete spectrum with low spectral resolution directly from the VCs. We test the filtered AXUV diode array on an X-pinch device with a peak current of 140 kA at Seoul National University; the array with ten channels is installed in a vacuum chamber. For a two-wire 40 μm stainless steel X-pinch, x-ray power, radiation temperature, and the reconstructed x-ray spectrum are obtained from the filtered AXUV diode array by the combined LS-LM method.

Having a sub-ns response time and not requiring physical contacts to the measurement points, a voltage measurement system based on the Pockels electro-optic effect, referred to as a PE (Pockels effect)-based voltmeter, is widely used for pulsed high voltage devices such as accelerators and X-pinch systems. To correct for the misalignment of a Pockels cell and the transmittance ratio of a beam splitter, a polar-coordinate-based data analysis scheme has been proposed. This scheme also overcomes a limitation on the measurable range of a PE-based voltmeter without ambiguity and can measure the half-wave voltage of a Pockels cell. We present an improved polar-coordinate-based data analysis scheme using an ellipse fitting method, which can correct for misalignments of all the optics components of a PE-based voltmeter while keeping the advantages of the previous scheme. We show the results of the improved data analysis scheme for measuring a slowly modulated voltage up to approximately 5 kV in about 30 s and a pulsed high voltage up to 7 kV with a rise time of less than 20 ns.

A 5-channel two color interferometer (TCI) system has been designed on KSTAR. TCI system is designed for tangential beam paths, which will combine with two existing interferometer systems of vertical and radial beam paths, so that it will provide 3-dimensional measurement of electron density evolution. TCI system uses wavelengths of 10.6 μm by a CO2 laser and 0.633 μm by a HeNe laser. The system compensates the vibrational noise by using two colors and avoids refraction by short wavelengths. The main purpose of the TCI is to generate routine measurement of the line integrated plasma density for the real time density control on KSTAR. The 5-channels will provide profile data for the density. Time resolution of the system is expected to be 500 kHz or higher in order to measure 3-dimensional density fluctuations for ELMs and other MHD activities including TAE modes. The system is planned to be working on KSTAR 2016 campaign with 1–2 channels.

Synthetic data describing coherent random fluctuations have widely been used to validate numerical sim- ulations against experimental observations or to examine the reliability of extracting statistical properties of plasma turbulence via correlation functions. Estimating correlation time or lengths based on correlation functions implicitly assumes that the observed data are stationary and homogeneous. It is, therefore, impor- tant that synthetic data also satisfy the stationary process and homogeneous state. Based on the synthetic data with randomly generated moving Gaussian shaped fluctuations both in time and space, the correlation function depending on the size of averaging time window is analytically derived. Then, the smallest possible spatial window size of synthetic data satisfying the stationary process and homogeneous state is proposed, thereby reducing the computation time to generate proper synthetic data and providing a constraint on the minimum size of simulation domains when using synthetic diagnostics to compare with experiment. Dispersion interferometers have been used to measure line integrated electron densities from many fusion devices. To optically suppress noise due to mechanical vibrations, a conventional dispersion interferometer typically uses two nonlinear crystals located before and after the plasma along the laser beam path. Due to the long beam path, it can be difficult to overlap the fundamental and second harmonic laser beams for a heterodyne dispersion interferometer and to focus the beams on the second nonlinear crystal located after the plasma, especially when the aperture of the nonlinear crystal is small, i.e., of the order of mm. To overcome such difficulties, a new concept of a heterodyne dispersion interferometer, a single crystal dispersion interferometer (SCDI), is developed and installed on KSTAR with the laser wavelength of 1064 nm. The concept and the optical setup of the KSTAR SCDI are discussed, as well as its first measurement during a shattered pellet injection that produces abrupt and large changes in the electron density. To demonstrate feasibility, the KSTAR SCDI measurements are also compared with those from the existing two-color interferometer.

A new low temperature multidipole plasma device with a magnetic X-point is developed. With a usual multidipole configuration generated by permanent neodymium magnets, a pair of axially flowing electrical currents up to 1.0 kA in the chamber creates figure-eight shaped poloidal magnetic fields with the X-point which separates plasmas into three distinct regions of core, edge and private regions. This new device, magnetic X-point simulator system (MAXIMUS), is equipped with end-plate wall filaments, core filaments and a LaB6 cathode as DC plasma sources. A wide range of plasma densities from 108 to 1012 cm−3 with electron temperatures of 0.4 to 3 eV is achieved. Plasmas in MAXIMUS are highly correlated with the shape of the magnetic fields as electrons are magnetized. Furthermore, electron velocity distribution functions can be significantly modified from usual Maxwellian distributions due to the strong grad-B and curvature drifts of electrons, resulting in high skewness and excess kurtosis. Such a capability of controlling the distribution function as well as having closed circular magnetic fields will allow us to systematically investigate effects of non-Maxwellian distribution functions and curved magnetic fields on various physical phenomena such as cross-field diffusion process, plasma waves and many nonlinear physics including solitons, shock waves and three-wave interactions. Tokamak edge physics correlated with neutral particles is also to be investigated with MAXIMUS.

Optical emission spectroscopy technique with Bayesian probability theory is used to infer electron temperatures and densities of low density helium plasmas. Helium plasmas are generated in a newly developed DC multi-dipole chamber, MAXIMUS (Magnetic X-point sIMUlator System). Plasma parameters are varied by adjusting neutral pressure, bias voltage and heating current. Likelihoods are calculated based on a helium collisional-radiative model consistent with the measured signal and noise level. With a uniform prior probability, we obtain the posterior which are compared with the simultaneous and independent measurements of the electron temperature and density by Langmuir probes.

A multidipole chamber with a DC discharge system capable of generating magnetic X-point configuration, MAXIMUS (MAgnetic X-point sIMUlator System), is constructed. The vacuum chamber of MAXIMUS is composed of two cylindrical chambers with the total length of 2 m (2 x 1 m) and the diameter of 60cm. An LaB6 hot cathode is installed on one end of the chamber, emitting energetic electrons whose energy can be varied up to approximately 200eV. The base pressure is ~ 1 0–6 Torr, and Ar, He, or mixed H2 DC glow discharge plasmas are generated with working pressure of between 0.1 and 10.0mTorr. Langmuir probes and emissive probes are used to measure electron temperature T e, plasma density ne, and plasma potential $\phi_{\mathrm{p}}$ . Magnetic fields are measured with Hall probes. Typical plasma parameters generated in MAXIMUS are found to be $\mathrm{T}_{\mathrm{e}}\sim 1\text{eV}, \mathrm{n}_{\mathrm{e}}\sim 10^{9}$ cm-3, and $\phi_{\mathrm{p}}\sim 4\mathrm{V}$ . Plasma parameters can be controlled by neutral gas pressure, discharge voltage and discharge current. Magnetic X-point is generated by two axial copper tubes inside the MAXIMUS, which can carry DC currents up to 1kA each. The magnetic field configuration can be adjusted by changing the position of the copper tubes and by changing the driving current of each tube independently. Spatial profiles of plasma parameters are investigated in the presence of the multidipole permanent magnets and various configurations of the magnetic X-point. MAXIMUS is designed to explore fundamental properties of plasmas, effects of neutral particles around the magnetic X -point to the core plasmas, and the plasma behavior due to magnetic perturbations in magnetic X-point configuration.

Using a statistical correlation analysis, we compute evolution of the magnetic Kubo number during an edge pedestal collapse in nonlinear reduced magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The Kubo number is found not to exceed the unity in spite of performing the simulation with a highly unstable initial pressure profile to the ideal ballooning mode. During the edge pedestal collapse, the Kubo number is within the values of $0.2$ and $0.6$ suggesting that the quasilinear diffusion model is sufficient to explain the energy loss mechanism during the pedestal collapse. Temporal evolution of poloidal correlation lengths of pressure fluctuations resembles with that of the Chirikov parameter and the Kubo number; while radial correlation lengths of the pressure fluctuations are strongly correlated with the radial width of the magnetic stochastic layer., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, Submitted to Physics of Plasmas

The mega amp spherical tokamak (MAST) was a low aspect ratio device (R/a = 0.85/0.65 ~ 1.3) with similar poloidal cross-section to other medium-size tokamaks. The physics programme concentrates on addressing key physics issues for the operation of ITER, design of DEMO and future spherical tokamaks by utilising high resolution diagnostic measurements closely coupled with theory and modelling to significantly advance our understanding. An empirical scaling of the energy confinement time that favours higher power, lower collisionality devices is consistent with gyrokinetic modelling of electron scale turbulence. Measurements of ion scale turbulence with beam emission spectroscopy and gyrokinetic modelling in up-down symmetric plasmas find that the symmetry of the turbulence is broken by flow shear. Near the non-linear stability threshold, flow shear tilts the density fluctuation correlation function and skews the fluctuation amplitude distribution. Results from fast particle physics studies include the observation that sawteeth are found to redistribute passing and trapped fast particles injected from neutral beam injectors in equal measure, suggesting that resonances between the m = 1 perturbation and the fast ion orbits may be playing a dominant role in the fast ion transport. Measured D–D fusion products from a neutron camera and a charged fusion product detector are 40% lower than predictions from TRANSP/NUBEAM, highlighting possible deficiencies in the guiding centre approximation. Modelling of fast ion losses in the presence of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) can reproduce trends observed in experiments when the plasma response and charge-exchange losses are accounted for. Measurements with a neutral particle analyser during merging-compression start-up indicate the acceleration of ions and electrons. Transport at the plasma edge has been improved through reciprocating probe measurements that have characterised a geodesic acoustic mode at the edge of an ohmic L-mode plasma and particle-in-cell modelling has improved the interpretation of plasma potential estimates from ball-pen probes. The application of RMPs leads to a reduction in particle confinement in L-mode and H-mode and an increase in the core ionization source. The ejection of secondary filaments following type-I ELMs correlates with interactions with surfaces near the X-point. Simulations of the interaction between pairs of filaments in the scrape-off layer suggest this results in modest changes to their velocity, and in most cases can be treated as moving independently. A stochastic model of scrape-off layer profile formation based on the superposition of non-interacting filaments is in good agreement with measured time-average profiles. Transport in the divertor has been improved through fast camera imaging, indicating the presence of a quiescent region devoid of filament near the X-point, extending from the separatrix to ψ n ~ 1.02. Simulations of turbulent transport in the divertor show that the angle between the divertor leg on the curvature vector strongly influences transport into the private flux region via the interchange mechanism. Coherence imaging measurements show counter-streaming flows of impurities due to gas puffing increasing the pressure on field lines where the gas is ionised. MAST Upgrade is based on the original MAST device, with substantially improved capabilities to operate with a Super-X divertor to test extended divertor leg concepts. SOLPS-ITER modelling predicts the detachment threshold will be reduced by more than a factor of 2, in terms of upstream density, in the Super-X compared with a conventional configuration and that the radiation front movement is passively stabilised before it reaches the X-point. 1D fluid modelling reveals the key role of momentum and power loss mechanisms in governing detachment onset and evolution. Analytic modelling indicates that long legs placed at large major radius, or equivalently low at the target compared with the X-point are more amenable to external control. With MAST Upgrade experiments expected in 2019, a thorough characterisation of the sources of the intrinsic error field has been carried out and a mitigation strategy developed.

In electrostatic simulations of MAST plasma at electron-gyroradius scales, using the local flux-tube gyrokinetic code GS2 with adiabatic ions, we find that the long-time saturated electron heat flux (the level most relevant to energy transport) decreases as the electron collisionality decreases. At early simulation times, the heat flux "quasi-saturates" without any strong dependence on collisionality, and with the turbulence dominated by streamer-like radially elongated structures. However, the zonal fluctuation component continues to grow slowly until much later times, eventually leading to a new saturated state dominated by zonal modes and with the heat flux proportional to the collision rate, in approximate agreement with the experimentally observed collisionality scaling of the energy confinement in MAST. We outline an explanation of this effect based on a model of ETG turbulence dominated by zonal-nonzonal interactions and on an analytically derived scaling of the zonal-mode damping rate with the electron-ion collisionality. One factor determining the reliability of measurements of electron temperature using a Thomson scattering (TS) system is transmittance of the optical bandpass filters in polychromators. We investigate the system performance as a function of electron temperature to determine reliable range of measurements for a given set of the optical bandpass filters. We show that such a reliability, i.e., both bias and random errors, can be obtained by building a forward model of the KSTAR TS system to generate synthetic TS data with the prescribed electron temperature and density profiles. The flow shear associated with the differential toroidal rotation of tokamak plasmas breaks an underlying symmetry of the turbulent fluctuations imposed by the up-down symmetry of the magnetic equilibrium. Using experimental Beam-Emission-Spectroscopy (BES) measurements and gyrokinetic simulations, this symmetry breaking in ion-scale turbulence in MAST is shown to manifest itself as a tilt of the spatial correlation function and a finite skew in the distribution of the fluctuating density field. The tilt is a statistical expression of the "shearing" of the turbulent structures by the mean flow. The skewness of the distribution is related to the emergence of long-lived density structures in sheared, near-marginal plasma turbulence. The extent to which these effects are pronounced is argued (with the aid of the simulations) to depend on the distance from the nonlinear stability threshold. Away from the threshold, the symmetry is effectively restored.

New results from MAST are presented that focus on validating models in order to extrapolate to future devices. Measurements during start-up experiments have shown how the bulk ion temperature rise scales with the square of the reconnecting field. During the current ramp up models are not able to correctly predict the current diffusion. Experiments have been performed looking at edge and core turbulence. At the edge detailed studies have revealed how filament characteristic are responsible for determining the near and far SOL density profiles. In the core the intrinsic rotation and electron scale turbulence have been measured. The role that the fast ion gradient has on redistributing fast ions through fishbone modes has led to a redesign of the neutral beam injector on MAST Upgrade. In H-mode the turbulence at the pedestal top has been shown to be consistent with being due to electron temperature gradient modes. A reconnection process appears to occur during ELMs and the number of filaments released determines the power profile at the divertor. Resonant magnetic perturbations can mitigate ELMs provided the edge peeling response is maximised and the core kink response minimised. The mitigation of intrinsic error fields with toroidal mode number n>1 has been shown to be important for plasma performance., 34 pages, 10 figures. Experimental data from the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is used to show that the inverse gradient scale length of the ion temperature R/LTi (normalized to the major radius R) has its strongest local correlation with the rotational shear and the pitch angle of the magnetic field (or, equivalently, an inverse correlation with q/{\epsilon}, the safety factor/the inverse aspect ratio). Furthermore, R/LTi is found to be inversely correlated with the gyro-Bohm-normalized local turbulent heat flux estimated from the density fluctuation level measured using a 2D Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic. These results can be explained in terms of the conjecture that the turbulent system adjusts to keep R/LTi close to a certain critical value (marginal for the excitation of turbulence) determined by local equilibrium parameters (although not necessarily by linear stability)., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

Since Langmuir's pioneering studies, low temperature plasma studies have evolved from single positive ion species plasmas, to plasmas with combinations of positive and negative ions in addition to electrons, to plasmas with very heavy negative dust ions. The use of ion acoustic waves, first recognized by Langmuir, as a diagnostic of plasma parameters based on wave frequency, wavelength and phase velocity data in a wide variety of low temperature plasmas, is reviewed. Dispersion relations for all types of unmagnetized plasma are derived as special cases of a single general dispersion relation. Complications associated with grid excitation, such as wave diffraction, excitation of waves at other plasma boundaries and particle burst pseudowaves, are also discussed. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A statistical method for the estimation of spatial correlation lengths of Gaussian-shaped fluctuating signals with two measurement points is examined to quantitatively evaluate its reliability (variance) and accuracy (bias error). The standard deviation of the correlation value is analytically derived for randomly distributed Gaussian shaped fluctuations satisfying stationarity and homogeneity, allowing us to evaluate, as a function of fluctuation-to-noise ratios, sizes of averaging time windows and ratios of the distance between the two measurement points to the true correlation length, the goodness of the two-point measurement for estimating the spatial correlation length. Analytic results are confirmed with numerically generated synthetic data and real experimental data obtained with the KSTAR beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic. With the Thomson scattering (TS) system in KSTAR, temporal evolution of electron temperature ($T_e$) is estimated using a weighted look-up table method with fast sampling ($1.25$ or $2.5$ GS/s) digitizers during the 2014 KSTAR campaign. Background noise level is used as a weighting parameter without considering the photon noise due to the absence of information on absolute photon counts detected by the TS system. Estimated electron temperature during a relatively quiescent discharge are scattered, i.e., $15$\% variation on $T_e$ with respect to its mean value. We find that this $15$\% variation on $T_e$ cannot be explained solely by the background noise level which leads us to include photon noise effects in our analysis. The Mega Ampère Spherical Tokamak (MAST) programme is strongly focused on addressing key physics issues in preparation for operation of ITER as well as providing solutions for DEMO design choices. In this regard, MAST has provided key results in understanding and optimizing H-mode confinement, operating with smaller edge localized modes (ELMs), predicting and handling plasma exhaust and tailoring auxiliary current drive. In all cases, the high-resolution diagnostic capability on MAST is complemented by sophisticated numerical modelling to facilitate a deeper understanding. Mitigation of ELMs with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with toroidal mode number n RMP = 2, 3, 4, 6 has been demonstrated: at high and low collisionality; for the first ELM following the transition to high confinement operation; during the current ramp-up; and with rotating n RMP = 3 RMPs. n RMP = 4, 6 fields cause less rotation braking whilst the power to access H-mode is less with n RMP = 4 than n RMP = 3, 6. Refuelling with gas or pellets gives plasmas with mitigated ELMs and reduced peak heat flux at the same time as achieving good confinement. A synergy exists between pellet fuelling and RMPs, since mitigated ELMs remove fewer particles. Inter-ELM instabilities observed with Doppler backscattering are consistent with gyrokinetic simulations of micro-tearing modes in the pedestal. Meanwhile, ELM precursors have been strikingly observed with beam emission spectroscopy (BES) measurements. A scan in beta at the L–H transition shows that pedestal height scales strongly with core pressure. Gyro-Bohm normalized turbulent ion heat flux (as estimated from the BES data) is observed to decrease with increasing tilt of the turbulent eddies. Fast ion redistribution by energetic particle modes depends on density, and access to a quiescent domain with ‘classical’ fast ion transport is found above a critical density. Highly efficient electron Bernstein wave current drive (1 A W−1) has been achieved in solenoid-free start-up. A new proton detector has characterized escaping fusion products. Langmuir probes and a high-speed camera suggest filaments play a role in particle transport in the private flux region whilst coherence imaging has measured scrape-off layer (SOL) flows. BOUT++ simulations show that fluxes due to filaments are strongly dependent on resistivity and magnetic geometry of the SOL, with higher radial fluxes at higher resistivity. Finally, MAST Upgrade is due to begin operation in 2016 to support ITER preparation and importantly to operate with a Super-X divertor to test extended leg concepts for particle and power exhaust.

Feasibility study of direct spectra measurements of Thomson scattered photons for fusion-grade plasmas is performed based on a forward model of the KSTAR Thomson scattering system. Expected spectra in the forward model are calculated based on Selden function including the relativistic polarization correction. Noise in the signal is modeled with photon noise and Gaussian electrical noise. Electron temperature and density are inferred using Bayesian probability theory. Based on bias error, full width at half maximum and entropy of posterior distributions, spectral measurements are found to be feasible. Comparisons between spectrometer-based and polychromator-based Thomson scattering systems are performed with varying quantum efficiency and electrical noise levels.

This report summarizes the contributions to, and discussions at, the 6th Asia-Pacific Transport Working Group (APTWG) meeting, held on 21–25 June 2016 at Korea University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. The objective of the meeting was to develop an integrated understanding of transport phenomena in magnetically confined plasmas. To accomplish this objective, four technical working groups were organized under the headings: (1) turbulence suppression and transport bifurcation, (2) effect of magnetic topology on transport and magnetohydrodynamics-turbulence interaction, (3) nonlocality and non-diffusive transport, and (4) Energetic particles and particle/impurity transport. A summary is also given of the three plenary review talks on impurity transport, the magnetohydrodynamics relaxation process in reversed field pinch, and recent experimental and modelling results on the quiescent H-mode operation.

Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) measurements of ion-scale density fluctuations in the MAST tokamak are used to show that the turbulence correlation time, the drift time associated with ion temperature or density gradients, the particle (ion) streaming time along the magnetic field and the magnetic drift time are consistently comparable, suggesting a "critically balanced" turbulence determined by the local equilibrium. The resulting scalings of the poloidal and radial correlation lengths are derived and tested. The nonlinear time inferred from the density fluctuations is longer than the other times; its ratio to the correlation time scales as $\nu_{*i}^{-0.8\pm0.1}$, where $\nu_{*i}=$ ion collision rate/streaming rate. This is consistent with turbulent decorrelation being controlled by a zonal component, invisible to the BES, with an amplitude exceeding the drift waves' by $\sim \nu_{*i}^{-0.8}$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

A procedure is presented to map from the spatial correlation parameters of a turbulent density field (the radial and binormal correlation lengths and wavenumbers, and the fluctuation amplitude) to correlation parameters that would be measured by a beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic. The inverse mapping is also derived, which results in resolution criteria for recovering correct correlation parameters, depending on the spatial response of the instrument quantified in terms of point-spread functions (PSFs). Thus, a procedure is presented that allows for a systematic comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental observations. This procedure is illustrated using the Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak BES system and the validity of the underlying assumptions is tested on fluctuating density fields generated by direct numerical simulations using the gyrokinetic code GS2. The measurement of the correlation time, by means of the cross-correlation time-delay method, is also investigated and is shown to be sensitive to the fluctuating radial component of velocity, as well as to small variations in the spatial properties of the PSFs.

Observations of ion-scale (k_y*rho_i, 27 pages, 11 figures

Effects of neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) induced by intrinsic error fields and toroidal field ripple on cocurrent toroidal rotation in H-mode tokamak plasmas are investigated. It is expected that large NTV torque can be localized at the edge region through the 1/ν-regime in the vicinity of Er∼0 in the cocurrent rotating H-mode plasma. Numerical simulation on toroidal rotation demonstrates that the edge localized NTV torque determined by the intrinsic error fields and toroidal field ripples in the level of most tokamaks can damp the toroidal rotation velocity over the whole region while reducing the toroidal rotation pedestal which is clearly observed in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak. It is found that the NTV torque changes the toroidal rotation gradient in the pedestal region dramatically, but the toroidal rotation profile in the core region responds rigidly without a change in the gradient. A new beam emission spectroscopy turbulence imaging system has recently been installed onto the MAST spherical tokamak. The system utilises a high-throughput, direct coupled imaging optics, and a single large interference filter for collection of the Doppler shifted D(α) emission from the ~2 MW heating beam of ~70 keV injection energy. The collected light is imaged onto a 2D array detector with 8 × 4 avalanche photodiode sensors which is incorporated into a custom camera unit to perform simultaneous 14-bit digitization at 2 MHz of all 32 channels. The array is imaged at the beam to achieve a spatial resolution of ~2 cm in the radial (horizontal) and poloidal (vertical) directions, which is sufficient for detection of the ion-scale plasma turbulence. At the typical photon fluxes of ~10(11) s(-1) the achieved signal-to-noise ratio of ~300 at the 0.5 MHz analogue bandwidth is sufficient for detection of relative density fluctuations at the level of a few 0.1%. The system is to be utilised for the study of the characteristics of the broadband, ion-scale turbulence, in particular its interaction with flow shear, as well as coherent fluctuations due to various types of MHD activity.

Weakly collisional Ar-O2 electronegative plasmas are investigated in a dc multidipole chamber. An electronegative core and an electropositive halo are observed. The density ratio of negative ions to electrons ({\alpha}) in the nondrifting bulk is found to be 0.43. The profile of {\alpha} is found using both the phase velocity of ion acoustic waves and the drift velocity of positive ions determined by laser induced fluorescence. The experiment shows that negative ions are in Boltzmann equilibrium with a temperature of 0.06 \pm 0.02 eV. The beam emission spectroscopy (BES) turbulence diagnostic on MAST is to be upgraded in June 2010 from a one-dimensional trial system to a two-dimensional imaging system (8 radial×4 poloidal channels) based on a newly developed avalanche photodiode array camera. The spatial resolution of the new system is calculated in terms of the point spread function to account for the effects of field-line curvature, observation geometry, the finite lifetime of the excited state of the beam atoms, and beam attenuation and divergence. It is found that the radial spatial resolution is ∼2–3 cm and the poloidal spatial resolution ∼1–5 cm depending on the radial viewing location. The absolute number of detected photons is also calculated, hence the photon noise level can be determined.

Summary form only given. Weakly collisional electronegative plasmas were investigated in a dc multidipole chamber. The plasmas were generated by primary electrons emitted from hot thoriated tungsten filaments. The working gases consisted of combinations of Ar and neutral feedgases that easily form negative ions. Measurements were made near a negatively biased stainless steel plate located in the center of the chamber. A planar Langmuir probe indicated the electron density ne and the effective electron temperature Te. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), using a tunable diode laser (668.614 nm), was used to determine the profile of Ar+ drift velocity. An emissive probe using the inflection point method in the limit of zero emission measured the plasma potential. In an Ar-O2 plasma with Ar neutral pressure = 0.10 mTorr and 02 at 0.30, ne ~ 3.8 X 109 cm"3 and the Te ~ 0.69 eV, an electronegative core and an electropositive halo were observed. The density ratio of negative ions to electrons (a) in the non-drifting bulk was found to be 0.43 from the phase velocity of an ion acoustic wave (IAW) using CW excitation at 100 kHz. The profile of a was found using both the phase velocity of the IAW and the drift velocity of positive ions determined by LIF. These measurements showed that the negative ions were in Boltzmann equilibrium with a temperature of 0.06 Acircplusmn 0.02 eV. Consistent with the small value of a, double layers were not found separating the electronegative core and the electropositive halo in this plasma. Measurements with other feed gases, which should have larger values of a, are now underway and will be reported.

This conference report gives a summary on the contributed papers and discussions presented at the 5th Asia-Pacific Transport Working Group Meeting held at Dalian, China from 9–12 June 2015. The main goal of the working group is to develop a predictive understanding of the basic mechanisms responsible for particle, momentum and energy transport in magnetically confined plasmas. The topics of the meeting in 2015 were organized under five main headings: (1) turbulence suppression and transport barrier formation, (2) effect of magnetic topology on MHD activity and transport, (3) non-diffusive contribution of momentum and particle transport, (4) non-local transport and turbulence spreading and coupling and (5) energetic particles and instability. The Young Researchers’ Forum which was held at this meeting is also described in this report.

A Bayesian model of the emission spectrum of the JET lithium beam has been developed to infer the intensity of the Li I (2p-2s) line radiation and associated uncertainties. The detected spectrum for each channel of the lithium beam emission spectroscopy system is here modelled by a single Li line modified by an instrumental function, Bremsstrahlung background, instrumental offset, and interference filter curve. Both the instrumental function and the interference filter curve are modelled with non-parametric Gaussian processes. All free parameters of the model, the intensities of the Li line, Bremsstrahlung background, and instrumental offset, are inferred using Bayesian probability theory with a Gaussian likelihood for photon statistics and electronic background noise. The prior distributions of the free parameters are chosen as Gaussians. Given these assumptions, the intensity of the Li line and corresponding uncertainties are analytically available using a Bayesian linear inversion technique. The proposed approach makes it possible to extract the intensity of Li line without doing a separate background subtraction through modulation of the Li beam.

It has been reported that supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) is an effective means of edge localized mode (ELM) mitigation. This paper newly reports the changes in the ELM, plasma profiles, and fluctuation characteristics during ELM mitigation by SMBI in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research. During the mitigated ELM phase, the ELM frequency increased by a factor of 2–3 and the ELM size, which was estimated from the Dα amplitude, the fractional changes in the plasma-stored energy and the line-averaged electron density, and divertor heat flux during an ELM burst, decreased by a factor of 0.34–0.43. Reductions in the electron and ion temperatures rather than in the electron density were observed during the mitigated ELM phase. In the natural ELM phase, frequency chirping of the plasma fluctuations was observed before the ELM bursts; however, the ELM bursts occurred without changes in the plasma fluctuation frequency in the mitigated ELM phase.

We evaluate the characteristics of global energy confinement in KSTAR (?E,KSTAR) quantitatively in three ways; firstly by comparing it with multi-machine scalings, secondly by deriving multiple regression equations for the L- and the H-mode plasmas, respectively, and lastly by comparing confinement enhancement of the H-mode phase with respect to the L-mode phase in each discharge defined as Hexp. The KSTAR database exhibits ?E,KSTAR of ?0.04 to ?0.16?s and of ?0.06 to ?0.19?s in L-mode and in H-mode plasmas, respectively. The multiple regression equations derived by statistical analysis present the similar dependency on PL and higher dependency on Ip compared with the multi-machine scalings, however the dependency on ? in both L- and H-mode plasmas draw the negative power dependency of ??0.68 and ??0.76 for H-mode and for L-mode database, respectively on the contrary to the positive dependency in all multi-machine empirical scalings. It is found that the energy confinement of both L-mode and H-mode of the discharges with Hexp?>?1.5 can be well-predicted by multi-machine scalings, ?E,89L and ?E,92H. Apart from this, the H-mode confinement with 1.5?Hexp?

New diagnostic, modelling and plant capability on the Mega Ampère Spherical Tokamak (MAST) have delivered important results in key areas for ITER/DEMO and the upcoming MAST Upgrade, a step towards future ST devices on the path to fusion currently under procurement. Micro-stability analysis of the pedestal highlights the potential roles of micro-tearing modes and kinetic ballooning modes for the pedestal formation. Mitigation of edge localized modes (ELM) using resonant magnetic perturbation has been demonstrated for toroidal mode numbers n = 3, 4, 6 with an ELM frequency increase by up to a factor of 9, compatible with pellet fuelling. The peak heat flux of mitigated and natural ELMs follows the same linear trend with ELM energy loss and the first ELM-resolved Ti measurements in the divertor region are shown. Measurements of flow shear and turbulence dynamics during L-H transitions show filaments erupting from the plasma edge whilst the full flow shear is still present. Off-axis neutral beam injection helps to strongly reduce the redistribution of fast-ions due to fishbone modes when compared to on-axis injection. Low-k ion-scale turbulence has been measured in L-mode and compared to global gyro-kinetic simulations. A statistical analysis of principal turbulence time scales shows them to be of comparable magnitude and reasonably correlated with turbulence decorrelation time. Te inside the island of a neoclassical tearing mode allow the analysis of the island evolution without assuming specific models for the heat flux. Other results include the discrepancy of the current profile evolution during the current ramp-up with solutions of the poloidal field diffusion equation, studies of the anomalous Doppler resonance compressional Alfvén eigenmodes, disruption mitigation studies and modelling of the new divertor design for MAST Upgrade. The novel 3D electron Bernstein synthetic imaging shows promising first data sensitive to the edge current profile and flows. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

The mean motion of turbulent patterns detected by a two-dimensional (2D) beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic on the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is determined using a cross-correlation time delay (CCTD) method. Statistical reliability of the method is studied by means of synthetic data analysis. The experimental measurements on MAST indicate that the apparent mean poloidal motion of the turbulent density patterns in the lab frame arises because the longest correlation direction of the patterns (parallel to the local background magnetic fields) is not parallel to the direction of the fastest mean plasma flows (usually toroidal when strong neutral beam injection is present). The experimental measurements are consistent with the mean motion of plasma being toroidal. The sum of all other contributions (mean poloidal plasma flow, phase velocity of the density patterns in the plasma frame, non-linear effects, etc.) to the apparent mean poloidal velocity of the density patterns is found to be negligible. These results hold in all investigated L-mode, H-mode and internal transport barrier (ITB) discharges. The one exception is a high-poloidal-beta (the ratio of the plasma pressure to the poloidal magnetic field energy density) discharge, where a large magnetic island exists. In this case BES detects very little motion. This effect is currently theoretically unexplained.

The formation of internal transport barriers (ITBs) is investigated in MAST spherical tokamak plasmas. The relative importance of equilibrium flow shear and magnetic shear in their formation and evolution is investigated using data from high-resolution kinetic- and q-profile diagnostics. In L-mode plasmas, with co-current directed NBI heating, ITBs in the momentum and ion thermal channels form in the negative shear region just inside q min. In the ITB region the anomalous ion thermal transport is suppressed, with ion thermal transport close to the neo-classical level, although the electron transport remains anomalous. Linear stability analysis with the gyro-kinetic code GS2 shows that all electrostatic micro-instabilities are stable in the negative magnetic shear region in the core, both with and without flow shear. Outside the ITB, in the region of positive magnetic shear and relatively weak flow shear, electrostatic micro-instabilities become unstable over a wide range of wave numbers. Flow shear reduces the linear growth rates of low-k modes but suppression of ITG modes is incomplete, which is consistent with the observed anomalous ion transport in this region; however, flow shear has little impact on growth rates of high-k, electron-scale modes. With counter-NBI ITBs of greater radial extent form outside q min due to the broader profile of E × B flow shear produced by the greater prompt fast-ion loss torque.

Plasma electron number density and ion number density in a dc multidipole weakly collisional Ar plasma are measured with a single planar Langmuir probe and a double planar probe, respectively. A factor of two discrepancy between the two density measurements is resolved by applying Sheridan's empirical formula [T. E. Sheridan, Phys. Plasmas 7, 3084 (2000)] for sheath expansion to the double probe data.
