Abstract

We describe the SpArc science gateway for spectral data obtained during the period from 1975 through 1995 at the Kitt Peak National Observatory using the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) in operation at the Mayall 4-m telescope. SpArc is hosted by Indiana University Bloomington and is available for public access. The archive includes nearly 10,000 individual spectra of more than 800 different astronomical sources including stars, nebulae, galaxies, and Solar System objects. We briefly describe the FTS instrument itself, and summarize the conversion of the original interferograms into spectral data and the process for recovering the data into FITS files. The architecture of the archive is discussed, and the process for retrieving data from the archive is introduced. Abstract

We present near infra-red light curves of supernova (SN) 2011fe in M101, including 34 epochs in H band starting fourteen days before maximum brightness in the B-band. The light curve data were obtained with the WIYN High-Resolution Infrared Camera (WHIRC). When the data are calibrated using templates of other Type Ia SNe, we derive an apparent H-band magnitude at the epoch of B-band maximum of 10.85 \pm 0.04. This implies a distance modulus for M101 that ranges from 28.86 to 29.17 mag, depending on which absolute calibration for Type Ia SNe is used., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, emulateapj style, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

Tumor behavior is intricately dependent on the oncogenic properties of cancer cells and their multi-cellular interactions. To understand these dependencies within the wider microenvironment, we studied over 270,000 single-cell transcriptomes and 100 microdissected whole exomes from 12 patients with kidney tumors, prior to validation using spatial transcriptomics. Tissues were sampled from multiple regions of the tumor core, the tumor-normal interface, normal surrounding tissues, and peripheral blood. We find that the tissue-type location of CD8+ T cell clonotypes largely defines their exhaustion state with intra-tumoral spatial heterogeneity that is not well explained by somatic heterogeneity. De novo mutation calling from single-cell RNA-sequencing data allows us to broadly infer the clonality of stromal cells and lineage-trace myeloid cell development. We report six conserved meta-programs that distinguish tumor cell function, and find an epithelial-mesenchymal transition meta-program highly enriched at the tumor-normal interface that co-localizes with IL1B-expressing macrophages, offering a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract

Over the last twenty years since the introduction of automated coding schemes, research in foreign policy analysis (FPA) has made great advances. However, this automatization process is based on the analysis of verbal statements of leaders to create leadership profiles and has remained largely confined in terms of language. That is, the coding schemes can only parse English-language texts. This reduces both the quality and quantity of available data and limits the application of these leadership profiling techniques beyond the Anglosphere. Against this background, this forum offers five reports on the development of freely available coding schemes for either operational code analysis or leadership trait analysis for languages other than English (i.e., Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, German, and Persian).

Abstract

Using 2D smoothed particle hydrodynamics, we investigate the distribution of wait times between strong shocks in a turbulent, self-gravitating accretion disc. We show that the resulting distributions do not depend strongly on the cooling time or resolution of the disc and that they are consistent with the predictions of earlier work. We use the distribution of wait times between shocks to estimate the likelihood of stochastic fragmentation by gradual contraction of shear-resistant clumps on the cooling time-scale. We conclude that the stochastic fragmentation mechanism cannot change the radius at which fragmentation is possible by more than ~20 per cent, restricting direct gravitational collapse as a mechanism for giant planet formation to the outer regions of protoplanetary discs. Abstract

The use of genetically engineered, replication-selective viruses to treat cancer is being realized with viruses such as ONYX-015, a human adenovirus that selectively destroys p53 mutant cancer cells. To enhance further the clinical efficacy of ONYX-015 and viruses like it, we have developed a novel gene delivery system for replicating adenoviruses. This system has two unique features. First, it uses the endogenous adenoviral gene expression machinery (promoter, splicing, polyadenylation) to drive transgene expression. Second, a single region or gene in the multi-gene E3 transcription unit is selectively substituted for by the therapeutic transgene(s). Analyzing various transgene substitutions for the 6.7 K/gp19 K region of E3, we demonstrate the following: (1) transgene expression in this system is predictable and mimics the substituted endogenous gene expression pattern, (2) expression of surrounding E3 genes can be retained, (3) the insertion site choice can effect both the transgene expression level and the viral life cycle, and, (4) expression levels from this system are superior to those generated from a replication-defective virus using the HCMV enhancer-promoter and this is dependent on viral DNA replication. Abstract

A previously developed model has been used to predict moisture distributions in beds of polyester fiber after drying for a given period of time. Drying conditions are varied by altering air velocity and by inserting perforated plates into the beds. The accuracy of the model in predicting moisture distributions is shown to vary with alteration of air velocity and the number of perforated plates inserted. Various types of perforated plate and arrangements of plates within the bed are studied. Explanations of the drying behavior in terms of bed inhomogeneity appear to be confirmed by the experiments. The work indicates the conditions under which drying of loose fiber beds is most efficient and in closest agreement with the theoretical model.
