Abstract The sex-specific differences in the growth and population characteristics of the high-commercial-value sand crab Ovalipes punctatus were investigated in Korea. The estimated allometric growth between the sexes showed significant differences in all morphometric measurements. In the classification of growth types, carapace width-chela length exhibited positive and negative allometric growth in males and females, respectively. Carapace width-abdominal width showed positive relative growth in both sexes, and orbital spine width exhibited negative relative growth in both sexes. Consequently, sexual dimorphism was evident in all measured traits. Growth parameters estimated using the ELEFAN function of the FiSAT II program indicated higher values in males compared to females. Asymptotic length (CW∞) for males was estimated at 139.2 mm, whereas for females it was 116.6 mm. Additionally, the growth coefficient (K) was higher in males (0.65) than in females (0.54), suggesting faster growth in males. The winter point (WP) was 1 for males and 0.7 for females, indicating slower growth in males during the colder December and slower growth in females during the spawning period in August. The modified von Bertalanffy growth curves indicated asymptotic growth in all sexes, and the growth performance index (φ') showed higher values in males (4.10) compared to females (3.87), reflecting differences in growth curves. The steady increase in recruitment rates from July to September was associated with the appearance of larvae and their subsequent growth into juveniles, leading to their recruitment into the population during this period. Therefore, O. punctatus exhibited sex-specific differences in growth parameters, suggesting distinct growth strategies between the sexes.

Abstract This study analyzed the expression of growth‐related genes of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, fed a low‐fish meal (FM) diet to investigate the replacement of the FM diet in the field. The expression of growth hormone (GH)/insulin‐like growth factor (IGF) axis genes in the brain/pituitary/liver and plasma hormone concentrations were measured. A basal experimental diet was formulated using 63% FM and 12% soybean meal as the primary protein sources, and then two other diets were made by replacing 20% and 30% of the FM with soy protein concentrate, tankage meal, and poultry by‐products meal. Each diet was fed to duplicate groups of juvenile flounder (150 ± 3.0 g) twice a day. After 20 weeks, the plasma growth‐related hormone concentrations were similar between the control and FM20 groups. Moreover, GH/IGF axis gene mRNA expression in the brain/pituitary/liver was similar between the control and FM20 groups. Immunoblotting of muscle and liver showed the same pattern. This study showed the utility of replacing 20% of the FM diet and supports the possibility of field application.

Song-Gang® bio-stone (SGS) is a microporous crystalline hydrated aluminosilicate which has found various applications because of their very unique physiochemical characteristics such as ion exchange and absorptive-desorptive properties. Significant progress has been made in recent years on applications of these inorganic adsorbents in different industries including agriculture, aquaculture, water and wastewater treatment. This review article intends to summarize the published reports on the applications of SGS in aquaculture industry. SGS application as a feed additive to enhance fish growth and promote their health and nutritional parameters is the most important discussed areas. According to the technical data that are discussed in this review, SGS should be considered as a material with tremendous potential for application in the aquaculture industry. Considerable amounts of research works are under way to explore other opportunities for application of SGS to benefit aquaculture industry.

A 6-month feeding trial was conducted to compare the effects of extruded pellet (EP) and moist pellet (MP) feed on the growth performance, non-specific immunity, and intestinal microbiota of olive flounder. A total of 60,000 fish with an average weight of 70.8 ± 6.4 g were divided into two groups and fed with one of two experimental diets. At the end of a 6-month feeding trial, the weight gain and specific growth rate of the fish fed with the MP diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed with EP (P < 0.05). However, the EP group exhibited a lower feed conversion rate than the MP group, meaning that the EP diet was more cost-effective. Whole-body proximate compositions and non-specific immune responses (superoxide dismutase, myeloperoxidase, and lysozyme activity) were not significantly different between the two groups. There were no significant differences in the α-diversity of the intestinal bacterial community of the two groups. However, the composition of microorganisms at the phylum to genus level was different between the groups. The EP group was rich in Actinobacteria, Corynebacterium, Bacillus, and Lactobacillus, whereas the MP group was dominated by Proteobacteria, Vibrio, and Edwardsiella. Collectively, the MP diet increased growth performance and pathogen concentration in the gut; whereas EP improved feed conversion and beneficial Bacillus and Lactobacillus proportion in the intestinal microbial community.

Freshwater eel (Anguilla japonica) is the main aquaculture fish species in Korea, but artificial mass seed production has not been succeeded yet; eel aquaculture is therefore dependent on the seed of wild catches. Major problems in artificial production of eel seed are the low growth and survival rates of early larvae, likely may be caused by the feed used for the first and subsequent feedings. Thus, a physiological understanding of the digestive and absorptive capacities is necessary. This study was conducted for 50 days after hatching (DAH); we investigated the activities of digestive enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase, lipase), expression levels of digestive enzymes (trypsin (try), amylase (amy), pancreatic lipase (pnlip)), and expression levels of nutrient transporters (large neutral amino acids transporter small subunit 2 (slc7a8), sodium/glucose co-transporter member 1 (sglt1), Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (npc1l1)). The try and slc7a8 expression increased with fluctuations until 50 DAH and showed a similar trend. The amy and sglt1 expression increased until 50 DAH and appeared to a similar trend. The pnlip and npc1l1 expression were relatively high until 15 DAH and decreased thereafter. And then, pnlip expression increased again from 30 DAH and npc1l1 expression maintained low until 50 DAH. Meanwhile, expression levels of digestive enzymes were highest in try, followed by amy and pnlip. And, the expression levels of nutrient transporters showed the highest values in the order of sglt1, slc7a8, and npc1l1. These findings suggested that protein and carbohydrates are more important than lipids in eel larvae. All digestive enzymes activities were low until 15 DAH and then rapidly increased to 30 DAH; these levels were maintained until 50 DAH. Eel larvae are considered to have insufficient and unstable digestive ability before 30 DAH. Therefore, in order to improve the growth and survival rate of eel larvae, this study is suggested that the composition of the current slurry-type diet could consist of easily digestible low-molecular substances before 30 DAH, increasing the protein and carbohydrate content and reducing the lipid content.

Pyropia yezoensis (P. yezoensis) is a popular species of red algae that are commercially cultivated and consumed in East Asia, China, Japan, and Korea. The high protein content of P. yezoensis provides a source of multiple bioactive peptides exhibiting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anticancer, tissue healing, immunomodulatory, and anticoagulant properties. Furthermore, many other biologically active substances in P. yezoensis, including carbohydrates, lipids, dietary fibers, and polyphenols, have shown potential health benefits and are important in both the food and agriculture industries. This review provides a detailed summary of researches over the last decade on the biological and medicinal properties of bioactive peptides. The information was extracted from various electronic resources, including Google Scholar, PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Patents.

Changes of gonadal morphology and mRNA expression patterns of vitellogenin were investigated in Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii (Chondrostei) during its early gonadal maturation period. Early differentiations and morphological transitions of both ovaries and testes appeared to occur actively until the age of 3 years, however from then on, the maturation patterns to full maturity were largely gender-dependent, in which males showed a faster progression of maturation than did females while females experienced a steady-state progress with a lagged interval before entering the final maturation. Expression of vitellogenin mRNAs are closely correlated with transitional patterns of gonadal appearances. In both females and males, hepatic mRNA levels of vitellogenin exponentially increased in the earliest interval (up to 1-year-old). However, in subsequent periods, vitellogenin expression in females continued to increase with age, whereas in males, the expression stabilized at a younger age. Nevertheless, at the age older than or equal to 7-year-old, fully matured individuals showed a quite low level of vitellogenin expression in both females and males. Collectively, results from this study could be useful as a fundamental guideline to address the gonad maturation of this sturgeon species, which is helpful for making practical decisions about farming practices and management for caviar production on local sturgeon farms.

This study examined the digestive physiological response of juvenile and growing olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) fed low-fishmeal diets. P. olivaceus (mean initial weight: 7.86 g) were cultured in eight square concrete tanks (10 × 10 m) at a commercial fish farm and fed twice a day with four types of experimental feed (FM70 control, 70% fishmeal content; FM45, 45% fishmeal content; FM35A, 35% fishmeal content; FM35B, 35% fishmeal content + 7% insect meal + 1% insect oil) for 6 months. During feeding experiments, fish growth was observed at 2-month intervals, and digestive organs (stomach, intestine, and liver) were sampled. Organs were stained with hematoxylin/eosin and Alcian blue/periodic acid–Schiff’s solution for each intestinal tissue (pore intestine and pylori), cholecystokinin in the pylori, and pancreatic polypeptide expression in the liver. Trypsin, chymotrypsin, and lipase activities in the intestine were measured. No significant differences in any of the measured variables were observed among the control, FM45, FM35A, and FM35B treatments at any of the sampling intervals. These results suggest that a diet comprising 35% fishmeal with added insects will not affect the digestive physiology of P. olivaceus in commercial fish farming in Korea.

Abstract We investigated the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)/AKT signaling pathway involved in muscle formation, growth, and movement in the adductor muscle of triploid Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Large and small triploid oysters (LTs and STs) cultured under identical conditions were screened, and the signaling pathways of individuals with superior growth were compared and analyzed. mRNA and protein expression levels of actin, troponin, tropomyosin, and myosin, proteins important in muscle formation, were higher in LTs compared with STs. Expression levels of IGF-1, IGF binding protein (IGFBP), and IGFBP complex acid-labile subunit were also higher in LTs compared with STs. Phosphorylation of the IGF receptor as well as that of AKT was high in LTs. In addition, the expression of phospho-mammalian target of rapamycin and phospho-glycogen synthase kinase 3β was increased and the expression of Forkhead box O3 was decreased in LTs. Therefore, we suggested that the IGF-1/AKT signaling pathway affects the formation, growth, and movement of the adductor muscle in triploid oysters.

Abstract In the present study, the protective effects of Hizikia fusiforme and Chlorella sp. extracts on lead acetate-induced hepatotoxicity were investigated. Hepatic damage was induced in rats by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of lead acetate and the protective effects of H. fusiforme (HZK) and Chlorella sp. (CHL) extracts on lead acetate-induced hepatic damage in rat liver were examined. The results revealed significantly increased glutamic oxaloacetate and glutamic pyruvic transaminase levels in the group treated with lead acetate only (Pb group); oral administration of HZK and CHL extracts tended to decrease the enzyme levels similar to those observed in the control group. Regarding antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase activity was increased in the Pb group and decreased in a concentration-dependent manner in the HZK- and CHL-treated groups. Glutathione levels were increased in a concentration-dependent manner in the HZK- and CHL-treated groups. There was no significant difference in catalase activity. Western blot analysis showed inflammation-related protein expression in mitogen-activated protein kinase and Nrf2 pathways was affected in the HZK- and CHL-treated groups. Therefore, HZK and CHL extracts exerted antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects against lead acetate-induced hepatotoxicity. Development of functional health foods containing HZK and CHL extracts, which have hepatoprotective effects against inhaled lead acetate, should be considered.

Fishmeal is an important source of protein in the fish diet, but its supply is unstable due to environmental pollution and overfishing of anchovy and herring. In addition, the disease outbreak of fish has been increased, and the abuse of antibiotics and vaccines has been becoming a problem for residual substances. Therefore, studies that address diets with reduced fishmeal content and additives that can increase efficiency and replace antibiotics are needed. Hence, in this study, the probiotics bacteria Bacillus sp. SJ-10 (BSJ-10) and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) were heat-killed (HK) used as additives in a low-fishmeal diet. The two bacteria with a 45 % fishmeal diet were added at a concentration of 3.34 × 108 CFU/mL, and both of probiotics bacteria were mixed and added to the same concentration in order to produce the diet for HK BSJ-10 (HKBSJ-10), HK LP (HK-LP), and MIX (HKBSJ-10 + HK-LP) groups. Aging is associated with an increased risk of emotional disorders such as depression. In this study, effects of Capsosiphon fulvescens hydrophilic glycoproteins (Cf-hGP) on depressive-like behavior in aged rats were investigated. Oral administration of Cf-hGP (15 mg/kg/day; 4 weeks) attenuated immobility time of aged rats in forced swimming test by increasing expression of mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the ventral hippocampus. Cf-hGP-induced BDNF-mediated activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and protein kinase A (PKA) phosphorylation, which upregulated α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) GluA1 phosphorylation at serine 845. The activation of BDNF-mediated PKA signaling by Cf-hGP also attenuated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the ventral hippocampus. AMPAR blockade or PKA inhibition abolished the Cf-hGP-induced decrease in immobility time. These findings suggest that BDNF-mediated cAMP/PKA signaling in the ventral hippocampus contributes to antidepressant effects of Cf-hGP by regulating AMPAR GluA1 phosphorylation and ER stress.

Abstract Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), along with IGF-binding protein and IGF receptor, are well-known regulators in the growth and survival of vertebrates. In this study, we investigated the involvement of IGFs and protein variation during embryonic development of the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Morphological stages were divided into six main developments as blastula, gastrula, cephalization, cranial regionalization, tail lift, and hatch. During embryonic development, protein variation was investigated using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. In addition, the mechanism of signaling of IGF-I receptor was examined using immuno-blot analysis. We found marked changes in protein expression at four stages of embryonic development and identified proteins as belonging to the vitellogenin 2 family. As development progresses, expression of IGF-II, phosphotyrosine, and phospho-Akt increased, while expression of growth factor receptor-bound protein 2 (GRB2) and one of guanine-nucleotide-binding proteins (Ras) decreased. These results provide basic information on the IGF system in the embryonic development of the olive flounder.

Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is a commercially important and valuable species for aquaculture in Korea. Due to the unstable supply of fishmeal for farmed fish, an optimum fish-feed formulation should be researched to ensure the sustainability of P. olivaceus aquaculture. This study investigated the effect of three experimental diets: Con (basal diet); FM20 (20% fishmeal replacement of CON); and FM30 (30% fishmeal replacement of CON) on P. olivaceus over 20 weeks at a typical farm by monitoring the growth and factors relating to sexual maturation. The results showed that no differences in growth were observed between the CON and diet-replacement groups. Gonadal oocyte development was similar between the CON and diet-replacement groups. Moreover, sbGnRH and GH expression did not differ between the CON and diet-replacement groups. The levels of Erβ and Vtg expression were significantly higher in the FM20 group than in the CON and FM30 groups after the experimental period. The expression of PSS-I was significantly higher in the FM30 group than in the CON and FM20 groups. Therefore, although growth occurred when 30% of the fishmeal was replaced, such high dietary protein replacement may be ill-advised during the maturation of olive flounder at the commercial fish farm.

Dexamethasone (DEX), a synthetic glucocorticoid, causes skeletal muscle atrophy. This study examined the protective effects of Pyropia yezoensis peptide (PYP15) against DEX-induced myotube atrophy and its association with insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-forkhead box O (FoxO) signaling pathway. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of PYP15 on DEX-induced myotube atrophy, C2C12 myotubes were treated for 24 h with 100 μM DEX in the presence or absence of 500 ng/mL PYP15. Cell viability assays revealed no PYP15 toxicity in C2C12 myotubes. PYP15 activated the insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR) and Akt-mTORC1 signaling pathway in DEX-induced myotube atrophy. In addition, PYP15 markedly downregulated the nuclear translocation of transcription factors FoxO1 and FoxO3a, and inhibited 20S proteasome activity. Furthermore, PYP15 inhibited the autophagy-lysosomal pathway in DEX-stimulated myotube atrophy. Our findings suggest that PYP15 treatment protected against myotube atrophy by regulating IGF-I and the Akt-mTORC1-FoxO signaling pathway in skeletal muscle. Therefore, PYP15 treatment appears to exert protective effects against skeletal muscle atrophy.

Glucocorticoids (GCs), which are endocrine hormones released under stress conditions, can cause skeletal muscle atrophy. This study investigated whether Pyropia yezoensis crude protein (PYCP) inhibits synthetic GCs dexamethasone (DEX)-induced myotube atrophy associated with proteolytic systems. Mouse skeletal muscle C2C12 myotubes were treated with DEX in the presence or absence of PYCP. DEX exposure (100 μM) for 24 h significantly decreased myotube diameter and myogenin expression, which were all increased by treatment with 20 and 40 μg/mL PYCP. Additionally, PYCP significantly reduced the nuclear expression of the forkhead box transcription factors, FoxO1 and FoxO3a, and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway activation. Further mechanistic research revealed that PYCP inhibited the autophagy-lysosome pathway in DEX-induced C2C12 myotubes. These findings indicate that PYCP prevents DEX-induced myotube atrophy through the regulation of FoxO transcription factors, followed by the inhibition of the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosome pathways. Therefore, we suggest that inhibiting these two proteolytic processes with FoxO transcription factors is a promising strategy for preventing DEX-related myotube atrophy.

BackgroundCoughing during emergence from general anesthesia may be detrimental in children. We compared the effect of a small dose of propofol or ketamine administered at the end of sevoflurane anesthesia on the incidence or severity of coughing in children undergoing a minimal invasive operation.MethodsOne hundred and eighteen children aged between 3 and 15 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status I, were enrolled in this randomized double blind study. Anesthesia was induced with propofol or ketamine and maintained with sevoflurane in N2O/O2. Each group received propofol 0.25 mg/kg or ketamine 0.25 mg/kg and the control group received saline 0.1 ml/kg. The decision to perform tracheal extubation was based on specified criteria, including the resumption of spontaneous respiration. During emergence from anesthesia and extubation, coughing was observed and graded at predefined times.ResultsThe incidence of emergence without coughing was higher in the propofol group than in the ketamine and control group (19%, 11% and 6%, respectively), whereas the incidence of severe coughing was higher in the control group than in propofol and ketamine group (17.14%, 10.0% and 6.98%, respectively).ConclusionsThe addition of propofol 0.25 mg/kg decreased the incidence of coughing after sevoflurane general anesthesia in children undergoing non-painful procedures.

We investigated the protective effects of Pyropia yezoensis crude protein (PYCP) against dexamethasone (DEX)-induced myotube atrophy and its underlying mechanisms. DEX (3 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal injection) and PYCP (150 and 300 mg/kg body weight, oral) were administrated to mice for 18 days, and the effects of PYCP on DEX-induced muscle atrophy were evaluated. Body weight, calf thickness, and gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscle weight were significantly decreased by DEX administration (p < 0.05), while PYCP supplementation effectively prevented the DEX-induced decrease in body weight, calf thickness, and muscle weight. PYCP supplementation also attenuated the DEX-induced increase in serum glucose, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Additionally, PYCP supplementation reversed DEX-induced muscle atrophy via the regulation of the insulin-like growth factor-I/protein kinase B/rapamycin-sensitive mTOR complex I/forkhead box O signaling pathway. The mechanistic investigation revealed that PYCP inhibited the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosome pathways in DEX-administrated C57BL/6 mice. These findings demonstrated that PYCP increased protein synthesis and decreased protein breakdown to prevent muscle atrophy. Therefore, PYCP supplementation appears to be useful for preventing muscle atrophy.

Non-obstetrical surgery during the first trimester is stressful to both the mother and the fetus. Anesthesiologists are also stressed, not only because of the effects of surgery itself, but also because of the uncertain influences of anesthesia thrown upon on the fetus. The authors present a case of breast surgery successfully performed on a woman 8 weeks pregnant requiring removal of breast abscess by the application of thoracic paravertebral block without any complications. Thoracic paravertebral block may be a safe anesthetic method for non-obstetric surgery during early pregnancy.

Purpose: Missing teeth is one of the most important indicators of oral health behavior and the result of dental caries, periodontal disease, and injuries. This study examined a trend in the incidence of severe partial edentulism (SPE) using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) data. Materials and Methods: Data of adults aged ≥20 years were obtained from the KNHIS for the 2014–2018 period. SPE was defined in dental information within a population with a treatment history of dental scaling as having 1 to 8 natural teeth. Crude incidence rates (CIRs) and age-standardized incidence rates (AIRs) with 95% confidence interval were calculated per 100000 persons. The Cochran Armitage trend (CAT) test and average annual percentage change were used to analyze SPE trends. Results: The CIRs among Korean adults were from 346.29 to 391.11 in 2014–2016 and from 391.11 to 354.09 in 2016–2018. The AIRs trend statistically increased by 4.31% from 346.29 to 376.80 and decreased by 4.72% from 376.80 to 342.10. The AIRs in men increased by 4.00% and decreased by 3.01%. The AIRs in women decreased by 2.18% and increased by 2.11% (CAT; p<0.01). The AIRs by region and income also showed trends of increase and decrease. Conclusion: The study showed that the incidence trend of SPE increased and decreased from 2014 to 2018. This result would be able to aid in the planning of public oral health, and may also serve as fundamental data for verifying the impact of the public oral health policies implemented. Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants and is strongly associated with adverse neurological outcomes. The incidence of severe IVH (grade 3 or 4) has persisted despite the overall decline in IVH. IVH has been attributed to changes in cerebral blood flow to the immature germinal matrix microvasculature. The cascade of adverse events following IVH includes inflammation, white matter injury, and delayed oligodendrial maturation. In this study, we aimed to identify long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), microRNA (miRNA), and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in the peripheral blood of preterm infants with IVH compared to normal controls, resulting in the finding of novel biomarkers for IVH. We conducted transcriptome sequencing and small RNA sequencing for identifying differential expression of RNA in preterm infants with IVH. We identified differentially expressed 47 lncRNAs, 95 miRNAs, and 1,370 mRNAs in preterm infants with IVH compared to normal control. Particularly, lncRNA H19 exhibited significantly high expression in preterm infants with IVH. The functional analysis revealed that differentially expressed RNAs in preterm infants with IVH were associated with ferroptosis, heme metabolism, and immune response such as lymphocyte activation and interferon response. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the potential of lncRNA, miRNA, mRNA as possible diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for IVH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the early 1990s in South Korea, climatic and anthropogenic factors have incurred the reduction of the wild seeds of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, which raised concerns about losing genetic diversity and accelerating genetic deterioration. We assessed the genetic diversity of C. gigas populations from two farms (Tongyeong and Gadeokdo) on the southern coast, where about 80% of the cultivated oysters in Korea are produced. Tongyeong showed slightly higher diversity than Gadeokdo, but both populations had a similar genetic structure characterized by low nucleotide diversity. Comparative haplotype analyses provided data supporting genetic features of the populations that include (1) weak genotype-locality relationship, (2) low levels of gene flow between populations, and (3) possible seasonal fluctuation of genetic variation within a population. Furthermore, the highly alike haplotype network patterns were observed between the wild and farm populations as well as among the populations in neighboring countries, which suggests that the genetic structure is conserved between wild and hatchery populations, and geographic proximity has minimal influence on the genetic composition.
