Abstract Spatial accurate mapping of land susceptibility to wind erosion is necessary to mitigate its destructive consequences. In this research, for the first time, we developed a novel methodology based on deep learning (DL) and active learning (AL) models, their combination (e.g., recurrent neural network (RNN), RNN-AL, gated recurrent units (GRU), and GRU-AL) and three interpretation techniques (e.g., synergy matrix, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) decision plot, and accumulated local effects (ALE) plot) to map global land susceptibility to wind erosion. In this respect, 13 variables were explored as controlling factors to wind erosion, and eight of them (e.g., wind speed, topsoil carbon content, topsoil clay content, elevation, topsoil gravel fragment, precipitation, topsoil sand content and soil moisture) were selected as important factors via the Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) feature selection algorithm. The four models were applied to map land susceptibility to wind erosion, and their performance was assessed by three measures consisting of area under of receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, cumulative gain and Kolmogorov Smirnov (KS) statistic plots. The results revealed that GRU-AL model was considered as the most accurate, revealing that 38.5%, 12.6%, 10.3%, 12.5% and 26.1% of the global lands are grouped at very low, low, moderate, high and very high susceptibility classes to wind erosion hazard, respectively. Interpretation techniques were applied to interpret the contribution and impact of the eight input variables on the model’s output. Synergy plot revealed that the soil carbon content exhibited high synergy with DEM and soil moisture on the model’s predictions. ALE plot showed that soil carbon content and precipitation had negative feedback on the prediction of land susceptibility to wind erosion. Based on SHAP decision plot, soil moisture and DEM presented the highest contribution on the model’s output. Results highlighted new regions at high latitudes (southern Greenland coast, hotspots in Alaska and Siberia), which exhibited high and very high land susceptibility to wind erosion.

Abstract Intensification of northern hemisphere glaciation (iNHG), ~2.7 million years ago (Ma), led to establishment of the Pleistocene to present-day bipolar icehouse state. Here we document evolution of orbital- and millennial-scale Asian winter monsoon (AWM) variability across the iNHG using a palaeomagnetically dated centennial-resolution grain size record between 3.6 and 1.9 Ma from a previously undescribed loess-palaeosol/red clay section on the central Chinese Loess Plateau. We find that the late Pliocene–early Pleistocene AWM was characterized by combined 41-kyr and ~100-kyr cycles, in response to ice volume and atmospheric CO2 forcing. Northern hemisphere ice sheet expansion, which was accompanied by an atmospheric CO2 concentration decline, substantially increased glacial AWM intensity and its orbitally oscillating amplitudes across the iNHG. Superposed on orbital variability, we find that millennial AWM intensity fluctuations persisted during both the warmer (higher-CO2) late Pliocene and colder (lower-CO2) early Pleistocene, in response to both external astronomical forcing and internal climate dynamics.

Abstract The Kyzylkum Desert, as a transition area of different dust source in Central Asia, provides and reserves a large amount of dust transported by different atmospheric circulation systems, affecting Uzbekistan and downwind East Asia. However, there remains very few investigations about sediment sources and control factors of the desert. We hereby first present a provenance study on the Kyzylkum Desert, utilizing detrital zircon U‐Pb ages of samples composed of desert sand, alluvial sediments from Amu Darya River and piedmont of Southwest Tianshan Mountains. The results reveal that the Southwest Tianshan Mountains contribute the majority of the Kyzylkum desert sand, and the river system, dominated by Syr Darya, controls the sediment provenance of the desert. Moreover, little contribution from the Kyzylkum and Nurata segments indicates that wind erosion on the bedrocks is weak. However, the aeolian process is still crucial but deposit and storage of dust are determined by local topography.

Abstract Loess-paleosol sequences have been used in Asia to study climate and environmental changes during the Quaternary. The scarcity of age control datasets and proxy indices analysis data for Asian loess has limited our understanding of loess depositional processes and the reconstruction of paleoclimatic changes from loess-paleosol records. In this study, we present a dataset that includes 1785 quartz optically stimulated luminescence ages and 1038 K-feldspar post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence ages from 128 loess-paleosol sequences located in different regions of Asia. We generate 38 high-resolution age-depth models of loess records based on the provided datasets. We provide data on 12,365 grain size records, 14,964 magnetic susceptibility records, 2204 CaCO3 content records, and 3326 color reflection records. This dataset contains the most detailed and accurate chronologies and proxy index data for loess records in Asia yet published. It provides fundamental data for understanding the spatial-temporal variations in loess depositional processes and climatic changes across the continent during the mid-late Quaternary.

The dry and windy Asian glacials during the mid-Pleistocene transition were probably due to the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet expansion, suggest records of grain size and magnetic susceptibility from the Chinese Loess Plateau and model simulations.

Land snails are abundant and well preserved in loess-paleosol sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) and are often regarded as valuable climatic indicators in paleoclimate reconstruction. To date, many stable isotope investigations have been carried out on land snail shells (e.g., δ13Cshell and δ18Oshell) from diverse geographical and climatic regions. However, few studies have been conducted on modern minute land snails (2–10 mm) on the CLP, and their climatic significance has not been adequately understood. Here, we present new δ13Cshell and δ18Oshell data from four minute modern land snails (Pupilla aeoli, Gastrocopta armigerella, Opeas striatissimum, Vallonia tenera), and analyses of their correlations with climatic factors (growing season temperature, precipitation and relative humidity) were conducted to examine their climatic significance across the CLP. The results show that δ13Cshell can record local vegetation information and has the potential to be a reliable precipitation proxy. Interestingly, δ18Oshell exhibits spatially scattered values in the studied region, and these data yielded poor correlations with various climatic parameters, such as precipitation amount, temperature and relative humidity. Given the similar spatial characteristics of observed precipitation δ18O (δ18Op), these phenomena may support the dominant control of δ18Op on δ18Oshell.

Abstract Gaining insight into the characteristics of past interglacials enhances our understanding of the current warm period and improves predictions of future climate. In this study, we analyze precipitation records of the past 900 ka and find that precipitation intensity during interglacials varied across Asia, especially between interglacials that occurred before and after the mid‐Brunhes transition. To clarify the mechanism of precipitation intensity variation during interglacials, we present a high‐resolution eolian record documenting the past 900 ka, which is from the thickest loess core (202.49 m) drilled in Ili Basin, Central Asia and conduct modeling with Community Earth System Model 1.2.2. We propose that sorting coefficient of Ili loess is a sensitive proxy for wind intensity, and it indirectly reflects Northern Hemisphere ice volume. Supported by numerical modeling experiments, we suggest that strong asymmetry of interhemispheric ice volume during marine isotope stages 11, 9, and 7 drives heterogeneity of interglacial precipitation intensity over Asia.

Loess is a ubiquitous, silty aeolian sediment common across the semiarid to subhumid regions in the Northern Hemisphere. As such, the physical characteristics of loess sediment, such as modal grain size and quartz crystallinity index, have the potential to inform us about dust transport pathways and corresponding atmospheric circulation responsible for entrainment, transport, and deposition. In this article, we combine detailed granularity analyses and non-parametric end-member modeling with investigations of the quartz crystallinity index of three loess deposits, extending from East to Central Asia, with the aim of identifying dust transport processes and the climate subsystems responsible for them. We find marked differences in the grain size characteristics of Eastern and Central Asian loess. Given potential linkages of fine particles to the westerly jet stream, here we focused on the fine-grained end-members in the loess. The fine-grained components of the Central Asian Bishkek (BSK) and Chashmanigar (CMG) loess may be derived from individual particles carried at high altitude by major climate subsystems such as the westerlies. However, similar quartz crystallinity indexes of fine- and coarse-grained components in the Central Asian loess indicated that surface-level wind strength might influence the releases from proximal-sourced regions and abundances in the upper atmosphere for the fine particles. By contrast, the fine-grained component of the East Asian [Fanshan18 (FS18)] loess seems to yield physical similarities to the Tertiary Red Clays underlying many loess stratigraphies, and has been interpreted to relate to transport associated with the East Asian winter monsoon. Thick Cenozoic sediments in Guanzhong Basin provide excellent geological records for the study of the regional tectonics, sediment environment evolution and paleoclimate change.However, there are still controversies about the Cenozoic stratigraphic division and the lower boundary of Quaternary in Guanzhou Basin.Based on paleomagnetism and paleontology strata from drilling cores and outcrop sections, we reappraise and reestablish the Cenozoic strata framework in Guanzhong Basin.According to fluvial-lacustrine deposits and eolian red clay-loess sequences, the authors discuss the lower limit of Quaternary in Guanzhong Basin. Evidence from lithology, magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and climate change supporting the lower limit of Quaternary strata should be confined to the boundary of "Yellow Sanmen" and "Green Sanmen" in the traditional Sanmen Formation or the boundary of eolian loess and red clay sediments around M/G boundary, and the paleomagnetic age is 2.6 Ma.Based on palaeomagnetic data of drilling cores, outcrops and previous literature, we revise the Cenozoic chronostratigraphic chart in Guanzhong Basin and amend or reallocate the ages of different strata from Eocene to Holocene.We propose that Neogene and Quaternary deposits in the Guanzhong Basin can be generally classified into two sets of different genesis sediments e.g.eolian and fluvial-lacustrine sequences.The eolian deposits can be extended to the Miocene period, which is older than previous conventional knowledge, and this Miocene eolian red clay sequences can be named as Duangjiapo Formation.This study is helpful to understand the formation and evolution of the sedimentary environment, paleoclimatic change, basin resource exploitation and geological engineering construction in Guanzhong Basin.

Chinese loess provides the most detailed terrestrial records of paleoclimate changes. We employed the grain-size components of aeolian sediments to reconstruct the history of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Here, using the grain-size class vs. standard deviation method, we extracted the environmentally sensitive grain-size components of nine last glacial loess sections. The grain-size class vs. standard deviation diagrams showed two major grain-size components (fine and coarse), which varied from section to section. Material resource distances and post-depositional pedogenesis were the main factors affecting environmentally sensitive grain-size components. The coarse grain-size components of the Yulin, Baicaoyuan, Xifeng, and Luochuan sections were influenced by the transportation distance, while we attributed the fine grain-size components of the Weinan, Shaoling, Duanjiapo, and Chaona sections to pedogenesis. At the same time, the Mianchi section’s sensitive grain-size component was also coarse, and was affected by the local circulation from the nearby Yellow River terrace. Our comparison of sensitive grain-size components and EAWM revealed that the coarse grain-size components were progressively finer along with the EAWM from the northwest to the southeast on the CLP, and they can be regarded as the most suitable proxy indicator of the EAWM on the CLP.

The North Yellow Sea, located at the intersection of the Eurasian continent and North Pacific Ocean at mid-latitudes, is a sensitive area subjected to the joint actions of the ocean, land, and monsoons. On its southern shore, loess and paleosol sedimentary sequences were widely developed during the last interglacial period, which is of great significance for revealing patterns of climate change and dynamic conditions. In this paper, we focus on the Zhifu section (ZFS) on Zhifu Island within the Shandong Province of China. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating method was used to construct our chronological framework. Grain size and its endmember (EM) components were then analyzed; EM1 is a clay component EM, which represents a weak dynamic environment and strong weathering pedogenesis, while EM2 and EM3 are silt and very fine sand component EMs, respectively, representing a strong dynamic environment and weak weathering pedogenesis. Maximum EM1, mean grain size, clay content, and pH values occur in the paleosol layers (ZF4, ZF6, and ZF8), with minimum values in the loess layers (ZF5 and ZF7); EM3 values show the opposite pattern. This indicates that the ZF4, ZF6, and ZF8 layers represent warm and humid environments with abundant precipitation, where the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) was enhanced, corresponding to Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5a, 5c, and 5e. In contrast, ZF5 and ZF7 represent sub-warm and humid environments with less precipitation, where the EASM was weakened, corresponding to MIS 5b and 5d. Among these stages, MIS5e is the warmest and wettest. These climatic events reveal the pattern of climate fluctuation over a ten-thousand-year timescale; they are synchronous with climate changes recorded in other geological repositories, such as cave stalagmites in southern China and sea-level fluctuations in the Yellow-Bohai Sea, which result from changes in global solar radiation.

Moisture variation is extremely relevant for the stability of ecosystems in Central Asia (CA). Therefore, moisture evolution and its potential driving mechanism over the region are always a hot research topic. Although much effort has been devoted to understanding the processes of moisture evolutions in CA during the Quaternary, particularly the Holocene, the associated underlying mechanisms remain in a state of persistent debate. In this study, the granulometry, clay mineral and chroma properties of a loess section (named ZSP section) in the westerlies-dominated Ili Basin, NW China are investigated. With the accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating (AMS 14C)-based Bayesian age–depth model, we provide a sensitive record of effective moisture evolution since the last glacial maximum (LGM) in the basin, and the results help enhance understanding of the possible driving mechanisms for westerly climate change. The loess in the arid area of Xinjiang is located at the eastern end of the Central Asia Loess Belt, and paleoclimate research about it is of great importance for understanding the mechanism of interaction of the Eurasian Westerly monsoon system and the aridity of Central Asia. This review focuses on recent progress concerning the spatial distribution, material composition and provenance of loess in Xinjiang and points out the shortcomings of and challenges to provenance and dust circulation. Field investigation and previous studies indicate that loess sediments have been mainly distributed on the river terraces and windward piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains and the Kunlun Mountains since the late Pliocene (mainly late Pleistocene). Grain size and age data show that Xinjiang loess deposits at some locations are rapid and discontinuous or sedimentary hiatus. The Siberian High system largely controlled dust mobilization and loess accumulation in northern Xinjiang but not southern Xinjiang. In southern Central Asia, the intensity of dust activity may be determined by the Caspian Sea–Hindu Kush Index (CasHKI) and local circulation. However, there is not enough evidence that the CasHKI index can affect the Tarim Basin area. Consequently, ascertaining the driving mechanism of mid-latitude Westerly winds and the dynamic process of loess deposition in Xinjiang is a specific suggestion for critical future research. Many indicators have shown that the loess dust sources in Xinjiang are composed of mainly proximal materials plus some remote materials. Alluvial plains and local proluvial fans contributed more to loess deposition, while Central Asian deserts comprise a small proportion of loess deposition in northern Xinjiang. In future provenance research, new technologies and new methods should be continuously tested to facilitate an objective understanding of the provenance of the loess in Xinjiang.

This article presents clay minerals and major elements data of Miocene red clay from Zhuanglang core (ZL) from the eastern Longzhong Basin, China. The dataset including the contents of main clay minerals such as smectite, kaolinite, illite and chlorite and other important clay minerals parameters as illite crystallinity, Illite 5 Å/10 Å, kaolinite/(illite +chlorite) ratio and major elements and its ratio as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, Na2O, K2O, K2O/Al2O3 and SiO2/Al2O3 in the Mid-Miocene climatic optimum (MMCO). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) experiments were made at the State Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The data provide the evidence for understanding the MMCO and its driving factors.

This article presents magnetic data of a 300-m-thick Mio-Pliocene red clay and Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence near Chaona town in the Central Chinese Loess Plateau. Detailed magnetostratigraphy shows that the aeolian red clay began to accumulate at ca. 8.1 Ma. Here, we presented a high-resolution rock magnetic data at 20–40 cm intervals within 4.5–8 ka span per sample of this section, which has been published in Song et al. (2014) [1] and (2017) [2]. The dataset including the following magnetic parameters: mass magnetic susceptibility (χ), frequency-dependent susceptibility (χfd), saturation magnetization (Ms), saturation remanent magnetization (Mrs), coercive force (Bc), remanent coercivity (Bcr), saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) and S-ratio. Magnetic susceptibility and hysteresis parameters were measured at Lanzhou University and Kyoto University, respectively. This data provides a high-resolution rock magnetic evidences for understanding East Asia Monsoon change, Asian interior aridification and tectonic effect of the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau since middle Miocene period. Central Asia is one of the most significant loess regions on Earth, with an important role in understanding Quaternary climate and environmental change. However, in contrast to the widely investigated loess deposits in the Chinese Loess Plateau, the Central Asian loess-paleosol sequences are still insufficiently known and poorly understood. Through field investigation and review of the previous literature, the authors have investigated the distribution, thickness and age of the Xinjiang loess, and analyzed factors that control these parameters in the Xinjiang in northwest China, Central Asia. The loess sediments cover river terraces, low uplands, the margins of deserts and the slopes of the Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains and are also present in the Ili Basin. The thickness of the Xinjiang loess deposits varies from several meters to 670 m. The variation trend of the sand fraction (>63 μm) grain-size contour can indicate the local major wind directions, so we conclude that the NW and NE winds are the main wind directions in the North and South Xinjiang, and the westerly wind mainly transport dust into the Ili basin. We consider persistent drying, adequate regional wind energy and well-developed river terraces to be the main factors controlling the distribution, thickness and formation age of the Xinjiang loess. The well-outcropped loess sections have mainly developed since the middle Pleistocene in Xinjiang, reflecting the appearance of the persistent drying and the present air circulation system. However, the oldest loess deposits are as old as the beginning of the Pliocene in the Tarim Basin, which suggests that earlier aridification occurred in the Tarim Basin rather than in the Ili Basin and the Junggar Basin.

Central Asia (CA) is one of the world's most significant arid regions, which is markedly impacted by global warming. A better understanding of the dynamical processes governing its Holocene climate variability is critical for a better understanding of possible future impacts of climate change in the region. To date, most of the existing CA paleoclimate records are from the summer precipitation-dominated eastern CA (ECA), with few records from the winter precipitation-dominated western CA (WCA). Here, we present a precisely dated (~6‰) and highly resolved (<4-y) record of hydroclimatic variations from the WCA covering the period between 7,774 and 656 y BP. Utilizing multiple proxies (δ18O, δ13C, and Sr/Ca) derived from a stalagmite from the Fergana Valley, Kyrgyzstan, we reveal a long-term drying trend in WCA, which is in contrast with the wetting trend in ECA. We propose that different responses of winter and summer westerly jets to seasonal solar insolation over the past 8,000 y may have resulted in an antiphased precipitation relationship between the WCA and ECA. Our data contain dominant quasiperiodicities of 1,400, 50 to 70, and 20 to 30 y, indicating close connections between the WCA climate and the North Atlantic. We further identified a series of droughts and pluvials on centennial-to-decadal timescales, which may have influenced regional societies and trans-Eurasian culture exchanges during historical and prehistorical times. The relationship between initial Homo sapiens dispersal from Africa to East Asia and the orbitally paced evolution of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM)--currently the largest monsoon system--remains underexplored due to lack of coordinated synthesis of both Asian paleoanthropological and paleoclimatic data. Here, we investigate orbital-scale ASM dynamics during the last 280 thousand years (kyr) and their likely influences on early H. sapiens dispersal to East Asia, through a unique integration of i) new centennial-resolution ASM records from the Chinese Loess Plateau, ii) model-based East Asian hydroclimatic reconstructions, iii) paleoanthropological data compilations, and iv) global H. sapiens habitat suitability simulations. Our combined proxy-and model-based reconstructions suggest that ASM precipitation responded to a combination of Northern Hemisphere ice volume, greenhouse gas, and regional summer insolation forcing, with cooccurring primary orbital cycles of ~100-kyr, 41-kyr, and ~20-kyr. Between ~125 and 70 kyr ago, summer monsoon rains and temperatures increased in vast areas across Asia. This episode coincides with the earliest H. sapiens fossil occurrence at multiple localities in East Asia. Following the transcontinental increase in simulated habitat suitability, we suggest that ASM strengthening together with Southeast African climate deterioration may have promoted the initial H. sapiens dispersal from their African homeland to remote East Asia during the last interglacial.
