Purpose: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), a common complication of diabetes mellitus and is characterized by myocardial hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis. Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), a natural nutrient, exerts strong protection against various myocardial diseases. Pyroptosis, a type of inflammation-related programmed cell death, is vital to the development of DCM. However, the protective effects of PQQ against DCM and the associated mechanisms are not clear. This study aimed to investigate whether PQQ protected against DCM and to determine the underlying molecular mechanism., Methods: Diabetes was induced in mice by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, after which the mice were administered PQQ orally (10, 20, or 40 mg/kg body weight/day) for 12 weeks. AC16 human myocardial cells were divided into the following groups and treated accordingly: control (5.5 mmol/L glucose), high glucose (35 mmol/L glucose), and HG + PQQ groups (1 and 10 nmol/L PQQ). Cells were treated for 24 h., Results: PQQ reduced myocardial hypertrophy and the area of myocardial fibrosis, which was accompanied by an increase in antioxidant function and a decrease in inflammatory cytokine levels. Moreover, myocardial hypertrophy-(ANP and BNP), myocardial fibrosis-(collagen I and TGF-β1), and pyroptosis-related protein levels decreased in the PQQ treatment groups. Furthermore, PQQ abolished mitochondrial dysfunction and the activation of NF-κB/IκB, and decreased NLRP3 inflammation-mediated pyroptosis in AC16 cells under high-glucose conditions., Conclusion: PQQ improved DCM in diabetic mice by inhibiting NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated cell pyroptosis. This article summarizes technical advances contained in the fifth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program package, covering developments since 2015. A comprehensive library of exchange-correlation functionals, along with a suite of correlated many-body methods, continues to be a hallmark of the Q-Chem software. The many-body methods include novel variants of both coupled-cluster and configuration-interaction approaches along with methods based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction and variational reduced density-matrix methods. Methods highlighted in Q-Chem 5 include a suite of tools for modeling core-level spectroscopy, methods for describing metastable resonances, methods for computing vibronic spectra, the nuclear-electronic orbital method, and several different energy decomposition analysis techniques. High-performance capabilities including multithreaded parallelism and support for calculations on graphics processing units are described. Q-Chem boasts a community of well over 100 active academic developers, and the continuing evolution of the software is supported by an "open teamware" model and an increasingly modular design.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used antitumor drug. However, its clinical application is limited for its serious cardiotoxicity. The mechanism of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity is attributed to the increasing of cell stress in cardiomyocytes, then following autophagic and apoptotic responses. Our previous studies have demonstrated the protective effect of Shenmai injection (SMI) on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity via regulation of inflammatory mediators for releasing cell stress., Purpose: To further investigate whether SMI attenuates the DOX-induced cell stress in cardiomyocytes, we explored the mechanism underlying cell stress as related to Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) activity and the regulation of autophagic flux to determine the mechanism by which SMI antagonizes DOX-induced cardiotoxicity., Study Design: The DOX-induced cardiotoxicity model of autophagic cell death was established in vitro to disclose the protected effects of SMI on oxidative stress, autophagic flux and JNK signaling pathway. Then the autophagic mechanism of SMI antagonizing DOX cardiotoxicity was validated in vivo., Results: SMI was able to reduce the DOX-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis associated with inhibition of activation of the JNK pathway and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Besides, SMI antagonized DOX cardiotoxicity, regulated cardiomyocytes homeostasis by restoring DOX-induced cardiomyocytes autophagy. Under specific circumstances, SMI depressed autophagic process by reducing the Beclin 1-Bcl-2 complex dissociation which was activated by DOX via stimulating the JNK signaling pathway. At the same time, SMI regulated lysosomal pH to restore the autophagic flux which was blocked by DOX in cardiomyocytes., Conclusion: SMI regulates cardiomyocytes apoptosis and autophagy by controlling JNK signaling pathway, blocking DOX-induced apoptotic pathway and autophagy formation. Objective: To identify the morphological parameters correlated with the rupture of middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the digital subtraction angiography (DSA) data of 48 patients with ruptured mirror MCA aneurysms. Morphological parameters included aneurysm with wall protrusion, maximum diameter (Dmax), height, neck width, aneurysm width, dome projection, parent artery average diameter (Dp), aspect ratio (AR), bottleneck factor (BNF), size ratio (SR), M1/M2 ratio, and height/width (H/W) ratio. These paired parameters were analyzed by conditional univariate and multivariate logistic regressions to screen out the independent risk factors. We established a score based on the independent risk factors. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were generated to estimate the prediction performance of the score in our large database of 763 aneurysms., Results: In the univariate regressions, Dmax, height, aneurysm width, neck width, AR, BNF, H/W ratio, SR, anterior dome projection and aneurysm with wall protrusion were significant risk factors. Aneurysm width (OR 3.296, p=0.015), AR (OR 11.594, p=0.014) and anterior dome projection (OR 9.385, p=0.016) were independent risk factors in multivariate regression. Background: Outcomes of endovascular treatment of anterior cerebral artery (ACA) aneurysms are still not well-characterized., Objective: The study aimed to review the clinical effect, procedure-related complications and follow-up outcomes and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment of ACA aneurysms in our center experience., Methods: From August 2014 to August 2018, a total of 75 consecutive patients with 77 ACA aneurysms were treated via the endovascular approach after providing informed consent. A retrospective review of the clinical, radiological, and endovascular details of these patients was conducted., Results: The mortality and the morbidity in this study were 4% and 9.3%, respectively. Compared with A1 and A2 aneurysms, intraoperative rupture was more common in A3 aneurysms (P = 0.029). Difference between the ruptured and unruptured aneurysms in the distribution of therapeutic strategy (P = 0.003) and immediate embolization degree (P = 0.004) was also significant. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the larger aneurysm (P = 0.031) was, the greater the ratio of aneurysm size to parent artery diameter (P = 0.029) was, the more likely the unruptured aneurysms were to occur ischemic events. Only a few types of inflammasomes have been described in central nervous system cells. Among these, the absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasome is primarily found in neurons, is highly specific and can be activated only by double-stranded DNA. Although it has been demonstrated that the AIM2 inflammasome is activated by poly(deoxyadenylic-deoxythymidylic) acid sodium salt and leads to pyroptotic neuronal cell death, the role of AIM2 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis in early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) has rarely been studied. Thus, we designed this study to explore the mechanism of gasdermin D(GSDMD)-induced pyroptosis mediated by the AIM2 inflammasome in EBI after SAH. The level of AIM2 from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with SAH was detected. The pathway of AIM2 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis, the AIM2/Caspase-1/GSDMD pathway, was explored after experimental SAH in vivo and in primary cortical neurons stimulated by oxyhaemoglobin (oxyHb) in vitro. Then, we evaluated GSDMD-induced pyroptosis mediated by the AIM2 inflammasome in AIM2 and caspase-1- deficient mice and primary cortical neurons generated through lentivirus (LV) knockdown. Compared with that of the control samples, the AIM2 level in the CSF of the patients with SAH was significantly increased. Pyroptosis-associated proteins mediated by the AIM2 inflammasome were significantly increased in vivo and in vitro following experimentally induced SAH. After AIM2 and caspase-1 were knocked down by an LV, GSDMD-induced pyroptosis mediated by the AIM2 inflammasome was alleviated in EBI after SAH. Intriguingly, when caspase-1 was knocked down, apoptosis was significantly suppressed via impeding the activation of caspase-3. GSDMD-induced pyroptosis mediated by the AIM2 inflammasome may be involved in EBI following SAH. The inhibition of AIM2 inflammasome activation caused by knocking down AIM2 and caspase-1 alleviates GSDMD-induced pyroptosis in EBI after SAH.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapy drug for malignant tumors. The clinical application of DOX is limited due to its dosage relative cardiotoxicity. Oxidative damage and cardiac inflammation appear to be involved in DOX-related cardiotoxicity. Shenmai injection (SMI), which mainly consists of Panax ginsengC.A.Mey.and Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl, is widely used for the treatment of atherosclerotic coronary heart disease and viral myocarditis in China. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of Shenmai injection on doxorubicin-induced acute cardiac injury via the regulation of inflammatory mediators., Methods: Male ICR mice were randomly divided into seven groups: control, DOX (10 mg/kg), SMI (5 g/kg), DOX with pretreatment with SMI (0.5 g/kg, 1.5 g/kg or 5 g/kg) and DOX with post-treatment with SMI (5 g/kg). Forty-eight hours after the last DOX administration, all mice were anesthetized for ultrasound echocardiography. Then, serum was collected for biochemical and inflammatory cytokine detection, and heart tissue was collected for histological and Western blot detection., Results: A cumulative dose of DOX (10 mg/kg) induced acute cardiotoxicity in mice manifested by altered echocardiographic outcome, and increased tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 6 (IL-6), monocyte chemotactic protein 1, interferon-γ, and serum AST and LDH levels, as well as cardiac cytoplasmic vacuolation and myofibrillar disarrangement. DOX also caused the increase in the expression of IKK-α and iNOS and produced a large amount of NO, resulting in the accumulation of nitrotyrosine in the heart tissue. Pretreatment with SMI elicited a dose-dependent cardioprotective effect in DOX-dosed mice as evidenced by the normalization of serum inflammatory mediators, as well as improve dcardiac function and myofibril disarrangement., Conclusions: SMI could recover inflammatory cytokine levels and suppress the expression of IKK-α and iNOS in vivo, which was increased by DOX. Overall, there was evidence that SMI could ameliorate DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by inhibiting inflammation and recovering heart dysfunction.

Astaxanthin (ATX) is a carotenoid that exerts strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory property deriving from its highly unsaturated molecular structures. However, the low stability and solubility of ATX results in poor bioavailability, which markedly hampers its application as therapeutic agent in clinic advancement. This study investigated a promising way of transferrin conjugated to poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-encapsulated ATX nanoparticles (ATX-NPs) on targeted delivery and evaluated the possible mechanism underlying neuroprotection capability. As a result, the ATX integrated into nanocarrier presented both well water-dispersible and biocompatible, primely conquering its limitations. More than that, the transferrin-containing ATX-NPs exhibited enhanced cellular uptake efficiency than that of ATX-NPs without transferrin conjugated in primary cortical neurons. Additionally, compared to free ATX, transferrin-containing ATX-NPs with lower ATX concentration showed powerful neuroprotective effects on OxyHb-induced neuronal damage. Taken together, the improved bioavailability and enhanced neuroprotective effects enabled ATX-NPs as favorable candidates for targeted delivery and absorption of ATX. In 1972, an enormous tomb site was found in the eastern suburb of Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, which led to the discovery of Mawangdui tomb No. 1, and soon thereafter tombs Nos. 2 and 3. These tombs were dated back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD) in Chinese history. Along with numerous precious historic relics unearthed as grave goods, a well-preserved female cadaver was the most unprecedented, which was considered as one of the world's greatest archeological discoveries in the 20th century. The cadaver was initially examined through autopsy and X-ray imaging, with biopsies from multiple body parts analyzed histologically at the light and electron microscopic levels. In this review, we summarize the major imaging and autopsy findings from the cadaver indicative of remarkable preservation of some histological, cellular, and molecular constituents of the body. A forensic assessment of antemortem illnesses and potential cause of death of the subject are also noted.

The Mawangdui tomb No.1 cadaver, a female corpse from the Western Han Dynasty, was unearthed in 1972. Forensic examination at the time of discovery indicated fairly remarkable presence of bodily constituents at the anatomical, histological, and molecular levels. The cadaver was preserved in a formalin-based fixative afterward, and maintained in the Hunan Museum. To better protect this rare human corpse, a reappraisal of the status of preservation was carried out using noninvasive approaches, including X-ray radiography, gross anatomical examination, and histological, microbiological, and molecular analyses of sampled tissues. The cadaver remained essentially intact from a gross anatomical perspective, with radiography of the skeletal system and arterial contrast filling appeared comparable with the original documentation. The light microscopic features of the skin, cartilage, and skeletal muscle remained detectable, as were the stratified ultrastructure of the collagen and muscle fibers. The levels of nitrogen and amino acidic elements appeared elevated in the cadaver and liver preservation fixatives, with a higher calcium and phosphate concentration in the former. These findings suggest that there existed a certain degree of macromolecule degradation and bone decalcification in the cadaver, likely irrelevant to biological decomposition. The reappraisal also led to the implementation of stronger scientific measures to better protect the cadaver through a renovated Museum-University coadministrative management agreement.

The Sichuan takin inhabits the bamboo forests in the Eastern Himalayas and is considered as a national treasure of China with the highest legal protection and conservation status considered as vulnerable according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In this study, fecal samples of 71 Sichuan takins were pooled and deep sequenced. Among the 103,553 viral sequences, 21,961 were assigned to mammalian viruses. De novo assembly revealed genomes of an enterovirus and an astrovirus and contigs of circoviruses and genogroup I picobirnaviruses. Complete genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis showed that Sichuan takin enterovirus is a novel serotype/genotype of the species Enterovirus G, with evidence of recombination. Sichuan takin astrovirus is a new subtype of bovine astrovirus, probably belonging to a new genogroup in the genus Mamastrovirus. Cervus albirostris (white-lipped deer) is an endemic species in China. As the name implies, C. albirostris has a characteristic pure white marking around their mouth and on the underside of the throat. The animal is a typical alpine species normally living at the height of 3500-4300 m. In this study, by pyrosequencing the 16S rRNA gene sequences, we for the first time analyzed the gut bacterial community composition in eight feces samples of wild C. albirostris. From a total of 243,634 high-quality sequences, we identified 186 genera, included in 17 prokaryotic phyla in the feces. The relative proportions of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were highly consistent in each individual sample. The most frequently detected genus was Ruminococcaceae UCG-005, ranging from 6.70 to 21.00%, displaying positively connections with the Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group. The bacterial communities associated with C. albirostris provide the basic knowledge for further microbiological studies and facilitates the conservation efforts of this vulnerable deer species.

Taxonomic classification of archaeal and bacterial viruses is challenging, yet also fundamental for developing a predictive understanding of microbial ecosystems. Recent identification of hundreds of thousands of new viral genomes and genome fragments, whose hosts remain unknown, requires a paradigm shift away from traditional classification approaches and towards the use of genomes for taxonomy. Here we revisited the use of genomes and their protein content as a means for developing a viral taxonomy for bacterial and archaeal viruses. A network-based analytic was evaluated and benchmarked against authority-accepted taxonomic assignments and found to be largely concordant. Exceptions were manually examined and found to represent areas of viral genome 'sequence space' that are under-sampled or prone to excessive genetic exchange. While both cases are poorly resolved by genome-based taxonomic approaches, the former will improve as viral sequence space is better sampled and the latter are uncommon. Finally, given the largely robust taxonomic capabilities of this approach, we sought to enable researchers to easily and systematically classify new viruses. SHENMAI injection, a prescription comprised of Panax ginseng and Ophiopogon japonicas, is being extensively applied in the field of cardio-protection and immune-modulation in China. Ginsenosides are the main active components in SHENMAI injection. In order to capture and analyze the pharmacokinetic profile of major ginsenosides of SHENMAI injection in Beagle dogs, liquid chromatography equipped with electro-spray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry method was applied in simultaneous determination for protopanaxatriol type ginsenoside (Re, Rf, Rg1), protopanaxadiol type ginsenoside (Rb2, Rb1, Rd, Rc) and oleanolic acid type ginsenoside (Ro). A C18 column (150 × 2.1mm, 5μm) and a linear gradient program were used to achieve chromatographic separation, with 0.02% acetic acid solution and acetonitrile. I.S. and ginsenosides were detected by LC-MS/MS in selective reaction mode. Good linearity spanning 5- 1500ng/mL was achieved with the R2 values higher than 0.99 for all analytes. Limit of quantification of all analytes were 3ng/mL. Intra- and inter-day precisions ranges from 0.47 to15.68 % and accuracies were within the range of 85.27-117.57%. Validated analyzing method was then used in the pharmacokinetic experiment for SMI in dogs. The results showed that the pharmacokinetic profile of protopanaxadiol, protopanaxatriol and oleanolic acid type ginsenoside were significant difference in dogs. Protopanaxadiol type ginsenosides exhibited an extremely higher level of exposure and a much slower elimination process. Whereas protopanaxatriol type ginsenosides were quickly eliminated. We concluded that 20 (S) - protopanaxadiol type ginseno sides could be a potential pharmacokinetic marker of SHENMAI injection.

Background: The effects of gender, negative life events, and coping on depression have been well-documented. But depression is a heterogeneous syndrome of which the severity ranged from mild depression to major depression. This study aimed to investigate the specific effects of gender, negative life events, and coping on different stages of depression severity., Method: A total of 5989 students (aged 16-25 years, M=20.85, SD=0.58), recruited from six universities in the central region of China using the stratified cluster sampling method, completed Life Events Questionnaire, Coping Response Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ., Results: Among the participants, 708 (11.8%) students presented different severity levels of depression. Gender, negative life events, positive coping, and negative coping all had significant effects on depression. That is, the possibility of being depressed was significantly higher in female university students, or students who had more negative life events, more negative coping, or positive coping. In terms of the different stages of depression severity, all these factors had significant effects on the stage from non- depression to mild depression; only gender, negative life events and positive coping had significant effects on the stage from mild depression to moderate depression; only gender had a significant effect on the stage from moderate depression to major depression., Limitations: The causal role of these factors on different stages of depression severity could not be inferred. Moreover, the participants were from a non-clinical population., Conclusions: The effects of gender, negative life events and coping varied in different stages of depression severity. The effects of life events and coping styles became insignificant with the increasing severity of depression, whereas the effect of gender remained significant. SHENMAI injection (SMI), derived from famous Shen Mai San, is a herbal injection widely used in China. Ginsenosides are the major components of SMI. To monitor the exposure level of SMI during long-term treatment, a 6-month toxicokinetic experiment was performed. Twenty-four beagle dogs were dived into four groups (n = 6 in each group): a control group (0.9% NaCl solution) and three SMI groups (2, 6 or 3 mg/kg). The dogs were i.v. infused with vehicle or SMI daily for 180 d. Blood samples for analysis were collected at specific time points as follows: pre-dose (0 h); at 10, 30, and 60 min during infusion; and at 10, 30, 60, 90, 120, 240, and 300 min post-administration. Concentrations of ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and Rg1 in the plasma were determined simultaneously by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Non-compartmental parameters were further calculated and analyzed. Significant differences were found between the kinetic behavior of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol-type (PPD-type) and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol-type (PPT-type) ginsenosides. Increasing in the exposure level of PPD-type ginsenosides was observed in dogs during the experiment. Therefore, PPD-type ginsenosides are closely related to the immunity modulation effect of SMI. Increased PPD-type ginsenoside exposure level may present potential toxicity and induce drug-drug interaction risks during SMI administration. CMIRS (composite method for implicit representation of solvent) is a relatively new implicit solvation model that adds terms representing solute-solvent dispersion, Pauli repulsion, and hydrogen bonding to a continuum treatment of electrostatics. A small error in the original implementation of the dispersion term, but one that can modify dispersion energies by up to 8 kcal/mol in some cases, necessitates refitting the parameters in the model, which we do here. We refer to the modified implementation and parameter set as CMIRS v. 1.1. While the dispersion energies change in nontrivial ways, an increase in the attractive dispersion term in the new implementation is largely offset by an increase in the Pauli repulsion during the fitting process, such that overall statistical errors are virtually unchanged with respect to v. 1.0 of the model, for a large database of experimental solvation free energies for molecules and ions. Overall, we obtain mean unsigned errors of <0.7 kcal/mol when the solvent is cyclohexane or benzene, <1.5 kcal/mol for water, and <2.8 kcal/mol for dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile, despite using no more than five empirical parameters per solvent. For the important but difficult case of ionic solutes in water, mean unsigned errors are <2.9 kcal/mol.

Experiments have suggested that the aqueous electron, e(-)(aq), may play a significant role in the radiation chemistry of DNA. A recent measurement of the energy (below vacuum level) of the putative "interfacial" hydrated electron at the water/vacuum interface, performed using liquid microjet photoelectron spectroscopy, has been interpreted to suggest that aqueous electrons at the water/biomolecule interface may possess the appropriate energetics to induce DNA strand breaks, whereas e(-)(aq) in bulk water lies too far below the vacuum level to induce such reactions. Other such experiments, however, find no evidence of a long-lived feature at low binding energy. We employ a variety of computational strategies to demonstrate that the energetics of the hydrated electron at the surface of neat liquid water are not significantly different from those of e(-)(aq) in bulk water and as such are incompatible with dissociative electron attachment reactions in DNA. We furthermore suggest that no stable interfacial species may exist at all, consistent with the interpretation of certain surface-sensitive spectroscopy measurements, and that even if a short-lived, metastable species does exist at the vacuum/water interface, it would be extremely difficult to distinguish, experimentally, from e(-)(aq) in bulk water, using either optical absorption or photoelectron spectroscopy.

The Marcus and Pekar partitions are common, alternative models to describe the non-equilibrium dielectric polarization response that accompanies instantaneous perturbation of a solute embedded in a dielectric continuum. Examples of such a perturbation include vertical electronic excitation and vertical ionization of a solution-phase molecule. Here, we provide a general derivation of the accompanying polarization response, for a quantum-mechanical solute described within the framework of a polarizable continuum model (PCM) of electrostatic solvation. Although the non-equilibrium free energy is formally equivalent within the two partitions, albeit partitioned differently into "fast" versus "slow" polarization contributions, discretization of the PCM integral equations fails to preserve certain symmetries contained in these equations (except in the case of the conductor-like models or when the solute cavity is spherical), leading to alternative, non-equivalent matrix equations. Unlike the total equilibrium solvation energy, however, which can differ dramatically between different formulations, we demonstrate that the equivalence of the Marcus and Pekar partitions for the non-equilibrium solvation correction is preserved to high accuracy. Differences in vertical excitation and ionization energies are <0.2 eV (and often <0.01 eV), even for systems specifically selected to afford a large polarization response. Numerical results therefore support the interchangeability of the Marcus and Pekar partitions, but also caution against relying too much on the fast PCM charges for interpretive value, as these charges differ greatly between the two partitions, especially in polar solvents.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of autologous platelet-rich gel (APG) in the treatment of chronic skin ulcer with tophus., Methods: Four patients of chronic skin ulcer with tophus received routine debridement to remove necrotic tissue and erasion tophus as far as possible,and then received the treatment of APG., Results: All of the patients had their wounds healed after the treatment of APG (one wound was treated twice). The wounds were healed between 8 to 22 d, average (13. 7±6. 8) d, while there were no adverse effects observed., Conclusion: Topical therapy with APG may be considered as an effective and safe adjuvant method for the treamtment of chronic skin ulcer with tophus.

Background: Participation in social groups are important but the collective behaviors of human as a group are difficult to analyze due to the difficulties to quantify ordinary social relation, group membership, and to collect a comprehensive dataset. Such difficulties can be circumvented by analyzing online social networks., Methodology/principal Findings: In this paper, we analyze a comprehensive dataset released from Tencent QQ, an instant messenger with the highest market share in China. Specifically, we analyze three derivative networks involving groups and their members-the hypergraph of groups, the network of groups and the user network-to reveal social interactions at microscopic and mesoscopic level., Conclusions/significance: Our results uncover interesting behaviors on the growth of user groups, the interactions between groups, and their relationship with member age and gender. These findings lead to insights which are difficult to obtain in social networks based on personal contacts.

The density functional theory (DFT) with commonly used functionals is known to be incorrect for charge-transfer problems. With long-range-corrected (LC) density functionals, the asymptotic exchange potential is gradually switched to the Hartree-Fock exchange at a long range, and the prediction for charge-transfer states is greatly improved. In this work, we test LC-DFT's performance on charge-transfer couplings. The range-separation parameter can be tuned nonempirically for properties of a generalized DFT. We propose to minimize the difference of highest-occupied Kohn-Sham orbital energy and the ionization potential (for hole transfer) or the lowest-unoccupied orbital energy and the electron affinity (for electron transfer). For photoinduced charge transfer, the minimum in the sum of such differences for the donor and the acceptor is proposed. With the range-separation parameters optimized, we found that ET couplings derived from the LC-DFT are close to those derived from coupled cluster with singles and doubles. When compared with experimentally derived Mulliken-Hush couplings, LC-DFT couplings are greatly improved as well. We also found that the couplings from BNL and LC-BLYP functionals are generally better than those from LC-ωPBE and LC-ωPBE0. LC-DFT is suitable for calculating ET coupling, especially with this nonempirical approach for the range-separation parameter.

The design and synthesis of functional self-assembled nanostructures is frequently an empirical process fraught with critical knowledge gaps about atomic-level structure in these noncovalent systems. Here, we report a structural model for a semiconductor nanotube formed via the self-assembly of naphthalenediimide-lysine (NDI-Lys) building blocks determined using experimental 13 C- 13 C and 13 C- 15 N distance restraints from solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance supplemented by electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction data. The structural model reveals a two-dimensional-crystal-like architecture of stacked monolayer rings each containing ∼50 NDI-Lys molecules, with significant π-stacking interactions occurring both within the confines of the ring and along the long axis of the tube. Excited-state delocalization and energy transfer are simulated for the nanotube based on time-dependent density functional theory and an incoherent hopping model. Remarkably, these calculations reveal efficient energy migration from the excitonic bright state, which is in agreement with the rapid energy transfer within NDI-Lys nanotubes observed previously using fluorescence spectroscopy.

We report the implementation and evaluation of a perturbative, density-based correction scheme for vertical excitation energies calculated in the framework of a polarizable continuum model (PCM). Because the proposed first-order correction terms depend solely on the zeroth-order excited-state density, a transfer of the approach to any configuration interaction-type excited-state method is straightforward. Employing the algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC) scheme of up to third order as well as time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT), we demonstrate and evaluate the approach. For this purpose, we assembled a set of experimental benchmark data for solvatochromism in molecules (xBDSM) containing 44 gas-phase to solvent shifts for 17 molecules. These data are compared to solvent shifts calculated at the ADC(1), ADC(2), ADC(3/2), and TD-DFT/LRC-ωPBE levels of theory in combination with state-specific as well as linear-response type PCM-based correction schemes. Some unexpected trends and differences between TD-DFT, the levels of ADC, and variants of the PCM are observed and discussed. The most accurate combinations reproduce experimental solvent shifts resulting from the bulk electrostatic interaction with maximum errors in the order of 50 meV and a mean absolute deviation of 20-30 meV for the xBDSM set.

A fragment-based method for computing vertical excitation energies of molecular clusters is introduced based on an ab initio implementation of a Frenkel-Davydov exciton model consisting of singly excited monomer basis states. Our strategy is to construct and diagonalize the exact Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian in such a basis. Matrix elements between nonorthogonal determinants are computed via the corresponding orbital transformation and the resulting generalized eigenvalue problem is solved to determine collective excitation energies and wave functions. The basis may be expanded to include higher-lying fragment excited states in order to account for interfragment polarization effects. Absolute errors of ≲0.1 eV (relative to supersystem methods) are achievable for systems such as water clusters and crystalline arrays of organic chromophores such as pentacene and napthalenediimide. Preliminary tests for a nine-chromophore subunit of an organic nanotube suggest that it is possible to target the optically bright state, even when it is a high-lying excitation, by using carefully selected basis states. The highly parallel nature of this method provides a foundation for further developments to treat collective excitations in large molecular assemblies.

A novel Gram-stain-positive actinobacterium, designated strain SCSIO 11529(T), was isolated from tissues of the stony coral Galaxea fascicularis, and characterized by using a polyphasic approach. The temperature range for growth was 22-50 °C (optimum 28-45 °C), the pH range for growth was 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0), and the NaCl concentration range for growth was 0-7% (w/v) NaCl. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unknown polar lipid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The major fatty acids (>10%) were iso-C16:0, iso-C17:1ω6c, iso-C16:1 H and C16:1ω7c/iso-C15:0 2-OH. The DNA G+C content of strain SCSIO 11529(T) was 70.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SCSIO 11529(T) belongs to the genus Prauserella, with the closest neighbours being Prauserella marina MS498(T) (97.0% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Prauserella rugosa DSM 43194(T) (96.4%) and Prauserella flava YIM 90630(T) (95.9%). Based on the evidence of the present study, strain SCSIO 11529(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Prauserella, for which the name Prauserella coralliicola sp. nov. is proposed. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: 'SHENMAI' injection (SMI) has been widely used in cardioprotection and modulation of the immune system because of its great efficacy. SMI primarily comprises the saponins from Panax ginseng and Ophiopogon japonicas. The profiles of saponins in SMI during long-term toxicokinetics remain unclear. MiR-146a possesses excellent sensitivity as a bio-marker in the innate immunity modification effect of SMI., Aim of the Study: Is to monitor the exposure level of SMI during a one-month toxicokinetic experiment, an analytical method involving ESI-LC-MS/MS technology was developed to determine 20 (S)-protopanaxadiol-type ginsenoside (Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd), 20 (S)-protopanaxatriol-type ginsenoside (Rg1, Re, Rf), oleanolic acid-type ginsenoside (Ro), and ophiopogonin D in rats. The levels of AST, CK, ALT, SOD, GSH-pX, MDA, miR-146a, and ECG were measured to explore the effects of SMI in cardiologic function and immune activity., Results: Results show that the levels of AST, CK, and MDA decreased upon the administration of SMI. The level of miR-146a increased upon the administration of SMI dosage. During the administration of SMI, increasing exposure levels of 20 (S)-protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides were also observed., Conclusion: The 20 (S)-protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides were considered potential PK/TK markers because of their high exposure levels that continuously increased. Oxidative stress was slightly alleviated during the toxicokinetic study. Based on the level of miR-146a, negatively regulated innate immunity was observed. The regulation became more serious with increasing exposure levels of 20 (S)-protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides. A novel filamentous bacterium, strain SCSIO 11153(T), was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the Indian Ocean (80° 03.099' E 01° 03.300' N) at a depth of 4593 m. Good growth was observed at 50-55 °C and pH 7.0 with 3 % NaCl. It formed ivory-white colonies with radial wrinkles. Aerial mycelium was absent on the media tested. Phenotypic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain SCSIO 11153(T) belonged to the family Thermoactinomycetaceae. It exhibited 96.4% and 96.2% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Melghirimyces algeriensis NariEX(T) and Melghirimyces thermohalophilus Nari11A(T), respectively, while lower sequence similarity values (<95.4%) were observed between strain SCSIO 11153(T) and other species of genera in the family Thermoactinomycetaceae. The menaquinone type was MK-7. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0 and iso-C17:0. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content of strain SCSIO 11153(T) was 52.6 mol%. On the basis of the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, it is proposed that strain SCSIO 11153(T) represents a novel species of the genus Melghirimyces with the name Melghirimyces profundicolus sp. nov. The type strain is SCSIO 11153(T) ( = DSM 45787(T) = CCTCC AA 2012007(T) = NBRC 109068(T)).

The temperature range for growth was 24-60 °C, with optimal growth occurring at 50 °C. The pH range for growth was 6-10 (optimum pH 8-9). The NaCl concentration range for growth was 0-5 % (w/v). The peptidoglycan type was A4α. Polar lipids contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and an unknown polar lipid. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4); MK-7(H4) was present as a minor component. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain SCSIO 15020(T) was 73.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SCSIO 15020(T) belonged to the genus Georgenia, with the closest neighbours being Georgenia muralis 1A-C(T) (96.3 % similarity), Georgenia thermotolerans TT02-04(T) (95.7 %) and Georgenia ruanii YIM 004(T) (95.6 %). Based on evidence from the present polyphasic study, strain SCSIO 15020(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Georgenia, for which the name Georgenia sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SCSIO 15020(T) ( = DSM 25884(T) = NBRC 108941(T)).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-stain positive, slightly halophilic strain, designated SCSIO 04524(T), was isolated from a deep sea sediment sample collected from the northern South China Sea at a depth of 3415 m. The isolate slightly embedded into the medium after 72 h incubation at 30 °C. Growth was found to occur on media with 0-10 % NaCl but extremely weak growth occurred without supplying NaCl. The predominant menaquinone was determined to be MK-7. The major cellular fatty acid identified was iso-C15:0. The diagnostic polar lipids were determined to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidyl methylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The genomic DNA G+C content was determined to be 38 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis showed that this strain had the highest similarities with Bacillus carboniphilus JCM 9731(T) (94.7 %) and Bacillus endophyticus 2DT(T) (94.3 %). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain SCSIO 04524(T) formed a distinct lineage with Bacillus chungangensis CAU 348(T) and B. carboniphilus JCM 9731(T). Physiological characteristics including utilization of sole nitrogen and carbon sources, and chemotaxonomic properties of cellular fatty acids and polar lipids could readily distinguish strain SCSIO 04524(T) from its most closely related species. Based on this polyphasic taxonomic data, a new species, Bacillus oceani sp. nov., is proposed, with the type strain SCSIO 04524(T) (=DSM 26213(T) = KCTC 33077(T)).

Objective: To explore the joint diagnostic value of four temperature sensation tests in elderly patients with type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy., Methods: Thermal sensory analyzer-II were applied to measure cool sensation (CS), warm sensation (WS), cold pain sensation (CP)and heat pain sensation (HP) of 308 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. Logistic regression model was adopted to create the new variable Temp4 from four temperature sensation tests to diagnose type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The ROC curve analysis was used to determine the best cut-off points of the four temperature sensation and Temp4, and the diagnostic value of it was evaluated., Results: The means of temperature sensation tests of the diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) group were significantly different from those of the non-DPN group (P < 0.05). According to the current reference intervals of the four temperature sensation tests to diagnose the DPN, the sensitivity of WS test was the highest, and the value was 0.710; but the specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, Youden index, diagnostic accuracy and Kappa value of cold sensation test were the highest, and the values were 0.842, 0.746, 0.799, 0.528, 77.92% and 0.535, respectively; the Kappa values of the other three temperature sensation tests were all greater than 0.4 (P < 0.05). The area under the ROC curve of the new variable Temp4 was 0.93 (95% CI 0.91-0.96), and was larger than the four temperature sensation tests (P < 0.05). The sensitivity, specificity, Youden index and diagnostic accuracy of Temp4 were 0.823, 0.897, 0.719 and 86.69%, respectively. The new best cut-off points of the CS test, WS test, CP test, HP test and Temp4 was 27.5 degrees C, 34.7 degrees C, 20.5 degrees C, 43.5 degrees C and 0.416, respectively., Conclusion: The results of the four temperature sensation quantitative tests were in good agreementand could be applied to diagnose DPN; the new variable Temp4 could be used for diagnosis of DPN with a higher diagnostic accuracy.

Objective: To summarize the clinical experience of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the patients with groupment acute carbon monoxide poisoning., Method: 172 patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning were received hyperbaric oxygen therapy besides some other regular therapies from january 2007 to december 2011. The clinical effect were analyzed retrospectively., Results: 160 patients were cured (93%), 12 cases improved (7%), the total effective rate was 100%. The cure rate of the patients with hyperbaric oxygen therapy within 6 hours after the poisoning for 100% (115/115), It was significantly higher than that of patients treated for more than 6 hours [The cure rate was 78.9% (45/57)], The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Treated by hyperbaric oxygen therapy early enough in the patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning, can prevent or reduce the occurrence of delayed encephalopathy, decreasing disability and mortality.

A Gram-positive bacterium, designated SCSIO 15042(T), was isolated from a sediment of the South China Sea and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The isolate grew at 20-60 °C, pH 6.0-10.0 and it could grow with up to 10 % (w/v) NaCl. The cell-wall diamino acid was found to be meso-diaminopimelic acid. Polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine and an unknown polar lipid. The only menaquinone was determined to be MK-7. The major fatty acids were identified as C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c, C16:0, iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0, and iso-C16:0. The DNA G+C content of strain SCSIO 15042(T) was determined to be 43.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences affiliated strain SCSIO 15042(T) to the genus Bacillus. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain SCSIO 15042(T) and Bacillus herbersteinensis D-1-5a(T), Bacillus infantis SMC 4352-1(T), Bacillus novalis LMG 21837(T) and Bacillus drentensis LMG 21831(T) were 96.2, 96.2, 96.1 and 96.1 %, respectively. Based on the evidence of the present polyphasic study, strain SCSIO 15042(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus abyssalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SCSIO 15042(T) (=DSM 25875(T) = CCTCC AB 2012074(T) = NBRC 109102(T)).

The present study aimed to investigate whether Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) would protect against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced testicular toxicity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with distilled water (4 mL/kg) or LBP (200 mg/kg, p.o.) daily for 10 days and followed by saline (0.9 %, 10 mL/kg) or DOX (10 mg/kg) intravenous injection at day 7. Pretreatment with LBP ameliorated DOX-induced reduction in the testicular weights, sperm concentrations and percentage of motile sperms, as well as the increase in abnormal sperm rate. LBP administration to DOX-treated rats successfully reversed the changes in MDA and GHS-Px levels. Compared with the control, pretreatment with LBP significantly increased the plasma testosterone level in the LBP + DOX group. The histopathology examinations further confirmed that LBP effectively attenuated DOX-induced severe degenerative changes of seminiferous tubules. The charge mobility is a key property in many electro-optical materials, with charge transfer (CT) taking place in a solid matrix of molecules. Large intermolecular electronic interaction is one of the key factors for a good CT rate, which is dependent on both intra- and intermolecular structures. The connection of the molecular structure with the intermolecular CT property would facilitate the search for a new material with desirable CT property, but currently it is still quite limited by the lack of knowledge for intermolecular configurations. In the present work, we study factors influencing the intermolecular configurations, and subsequently the CT property, in tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminium(III) (AlQ(3)) from all currently available crystal structures. We found that there exists a pair of CH-π interactions in a good majority of the π-π stacked bimolecular configurations. Such CH-π and π-π interacting structures are also seen in the crystal structures of many other similar molecules. With both experimental and simulated structures, we show that the CH-π interaction stabilizes the bimolecular configurations, and drives the structure towards a region with a higher electron transfer coupling and lower hole transfer coupling. This effect likely affects the electron transport property of AlQ(3), since it is consistent with recent experimental results, where AlQ(3) analogs with their CH-π interaction blocked either require a higher operating voltage in light-emitting devices [Sapochak et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2001, 123, 6300], or become bipolar in their charge mobilities [Liao et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2009, 131, 763]. CH-π interaction is commonly seen in aromatic molecules, which are frequently used as building blocks in molecules for electro-optical applications. Our work points out a possible way to enhance the desired CT property in the design of new materials.

We have studied the triplet energy transfer (TET) for photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, the bacterial light-harvesting complex II (LH2) of Rhodospirillum molischianum and Rhodopseudomonas acidophila, and the peridinin-chlorophyll a protein (PCP) from Amphidinium carterae. The electronic coupling factor was calculated with the recently developed fragment spin difference scheme (You and Hsu, J. Chem. Phys. 2010, 133, 074105), which is a general computational scheme that yields the overall coupling under the Hamiltonian employed. The TET rates were estimated based on the couplings obtained. For all light-harvesting complexes studied, there exist nanosecond triplet energy transfer from the chlorophylls to the carotenoids. This result supports a direct triplet quenching mechanism for the photoprotection function of carotenoids. The TET rates are similar for a broad range of carotenoid triplet state energy, which implies a general and robust TET quenching role for carotenoids in photosynthesis. This result is also consistent with the weak dependence of TET kinetics on the type or the number of π conjugation lengths in the carotenoids and their analogues reported in the literature. We have also explored the possibility of forming triplet excitons in these complexes. In B850 of LH2 or the peridinin cluster in PCP, it is unlikely to have triplet exciton since the energy differences of any two neighboring molecules are likely to be much larger than their TET couplings. Our results provide theoretical limits to the possible photophysics in the light-harvesting complexes.

In the present study, we analyzed the stereospecific pharmacodynamics and inversion of N(G)-nitro-arginine by an intravenous blous injection of L-N(G)-nitro-arginine (L-NNA) or D-N(G)-nitro-arginine (D-NNA) (10 mg/kg) in beagle dogs. Significant pressor responses were observed for both substances, though a similar maximum response induced by L-NNA was reached at 120 min slower as compared with D-NNA. The rise in mean arterial pressure (MAP) of D-NNA dogs was also shown to be slower than the L-NNA group. Our data showed that D-NNA had no impact on MAP within 60 min after its injection. Plasma L-NNA started to appear after 45 min posterior to the i.v. bolus injection of D-NNA. This chiral inversion is unidirectional because no D-NNA was not produced from L-NNA. The pressor response in the D-NNA-injected dogs was well parallel to the plasma L-NNA concentration. Similar disposition of N(G)-nitro-arginine enantiomers and 4% of chiral inversion ratio from D-NNA to L-NNA was found in the beagle dogs. Given that D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) is the essential enzyme in chiral inversion of D-NNA, we further compared the enzymatic activity of the renal DAAO between dogs and rats. To calculate the electronic couplings in both inter- and intramolecular triplet energy transfer (TET), we have developed the "fragment spin difference" (FSD) scheme. The FSD was a generalization from the "fragment charge difference" (FCD) method of Voityuk et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 117, 5607 (2002)] for electron transfer (ET) coupling. In FSD, the spin population difference was used in place of the charge difference in FCD. FSD is derived from the eigenstate energies and populations, and therefore the FSD couplings contain all contributions in the Hamiltonian as well as the potential overlap effect. In the present work, two series of molecules, all-trans-polyene oligomers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, were tested for intermolecular TET study. The TET coupling results are largely similar to those from the previously developed direct coupling scheme, with FSD being easier and more flexible in use. On the other hand, the Dexter's exchange integral value, a quantity that is often used as an approximate for the TET coupling, varies in a large range as compared to the corresponding TET coupling. To test the FSD for intramolecular TET, we have calculated the TET couplings between zinc(II)-porphyrin and free-base porphyrin separated by different numbers of p-phenyleneethynylene bridge units. Our estimated rate constants are consistent with experimentally measured TET rates. The FSD method can be used for both intermolecular and intramolecular TET, regardless of their symmetry. This general applicability is an improvement over most existing methodologies.

Objective: To investigate the chest CT manifestations of paragonimiasis at different clinical phases., Methods: Forty-eight cases of paragonimiasis confirmed by laboratory studies were retrospectively analyzed. There were 30 males and e18 females ageing 9 - 66 years (average, 31.4 years). Conventional chest CT was performed in all cases and contrast enhanced CT in some cases., Results: The chest CT findings of paragonimiasis included: (1) peribronchial inflammation (n = 9); (2) infiltration (n = 13), manifested as unilateral or bilateral patchy infiltrates with hazy borders. The location and shape were variable. The typical "canal gas-path" sign was seen in a few patients; (3) nodular and masses (n = 11); (4) cysts and cavity (n = 6); (5) pleural effusion (n = 9). The CT appearances of paragonimiasis were different at different clinical phases. Peribronchial inflammation, infiltration and pleural effusion were early presentations, not distinguishable from other common infections. The appearance of nodules, masses, cysts and cavities was more common in the clinical course. At the stabilization phase, nodular cavity or pleura thickening and calcification were revealed., Conclusion: There are various abnormalities on chest CT at different phases of paragonimiasis. Combination of clinical manifestations with chest CT characteristics is important in the diagnosis of paragonimiasis.

The observation of bridge-mediated excitation energy transfer (EET) has raised questions on the physical origin of such an effect. In this work, we studied the effect of bridge fragments in the Coulomb coupling, the major contribution to the electronic coupling in an EET process. For a series of ortho-phenyleneethynylene oligomers spaced donor-acceptors, we found that a large influence of the bridge fragment in EET coupling is through changes in the Coulomb couplings. Both enhancement and screening effects of the bridge were observed as the EET rates were modified by a factor of 0.3-23 with an intervening bridge in our calculations. The dependency of EET couplings on the orientation of transition dipoles of the donor and acceptor from quantum mechanical computations is very similar to that of a simple classical dielectric model. Our work shows that the bridge fragments can modify the Coulomb coupling with their polarizability by providing an optical dielectric medium between the donor and acceptor. In particular, when the transition dipoles of the donor and acceptor were longitudinal to a polarizable bridge, the EET rates were enhanced by one order of magnitude, as compared to the values of through-space models. Our results offer important insights into the design of efficient energy transfer systems.

Objective: To investigate the CT features of pulmonary sarcoidosis and to follow the changes after glucocorticoid therapy., Methods: CT scans and clinical data of 90 patients with histologically confirmed pulmonary sarcoidosis were retrospectively reviewed. CT follow-up was carried out 5-30 d following therapy in 43 cases. The follow-up lasted 3-48 months., Results: The main CT finding of pulmonary sarcoidosis was nodules which were present in 69 cases (77%), mostly distributed around bronchovascular bundles (n = 37, 41%). Other abnormalities included consolidation (n = 31, 34%), ground-grass ( n = 39, 43%), thickening of bronchovascular bundles (n = 30, 33%) interlobular septal lines (n = 58, 64%), fibrosis (n = 17, 19%), air-trapping (n = 3, 3%) bronchial narrowing (n = 8, 9%), pleural thickening (n = 42, 47%), hilar and mediastinal adenopathy (n =76, 84%). Two or more radiological patterns were present in 83 cases. Twenty-five cases of nodules (25/30), 9 cases of consolidation (9/15), 11 cases of ground-grass (11/16), 10 cases of thickening of bronchovascular bundles (10/12) were improved after therapy. Ten cases of interlobular septa (10/22), 1 case of diffuse linear changes (1/3), but no bronchial distortion (0/4) and honeycombing (0/2), were improved., Conclusions: The CT manifestations of pulmonary sarcoidosis are varied, with some specific radiographic features. The radiological diagnosis and the effect of glucocorticoid therapy can be evaluated by repeated CT scanning. Nodules, consolidation, ground-grass, and thickening of bronchovascular bundles can be improved markedly after glucocorticoid therapy, but bronchial distortion, linear changes and honeycombing can not.

Doxorubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic agent used in the treatment of a variety of solid and haematopoietic tumours, but its use is limited by formation of metabolites that induce acute and chronic cardiac toxicities. Angelica sinensis has been widely used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China. In the present study, we used an in vivo mouse model to explore whether A. sinensis could protect against doxorubicin-induced chronic cardiotoxicity. Male ICR mice were treated with distilled water or water extraction of A. sinensis (15 g/kg, orally) daily for 4 weeks, followed by saline or doxorubicin (15 mg/kg, intravenously) treatments weekly. Cardiotoxicity was assessed by electrocardiograph, antioxidant activity in cardiac tissues, serum levels of creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and histopathological change in cardiac tissues. A cumulative dose of doxorubicin (60 mg/kg) caused animal death and myocardial injury characterized by increased QT interval and decreased heart rate in electrocardiograph, decrease of heart antioxidant activity, increase of serum AST, as well as myocardial lesions. Pre-treatment with A. sinensis significantly reduced mortality and improved heart performance of the doxorubicin-treated mice as evidenced from normalization of antioxidative activity and serum AST, preventing loss of myofibrils as well as improving arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities. Furthermore, the in vitro cytotoxic study showed that A. sinensis did not compromise the antitumour activity of doxorubicin. These results suggested that A. sinensis elicited a typical cardioprotective effect on doxorubicin-related oxidative stress, and could be a novel adjunct in the combination with doxorubicin chemotherapy.

A plasmid DNA that encodes chicken interleukin-2 (pCI-ChIL-2-EGFP) was investigated for its distribution and expression after intramuscular (i.m.) injection in chickens. After the i.m. injection, serum distribution was detectable from 2 h post inoculation (p.i.), peaked at 8 h p.i., and disappeared at 7 days p.i. The plasmid DNA was also observed in several organs including heart, liver, lung, spleen, bursa and inoculated muscle at different time points, but at 19 days p.i. the plasmid DNA was not found in any organ except inoculated muscle. Fluorescence of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was found in cytoplasm and nucleus of cultured Vero cells, chicken embryo fibroblasts and peripheral blood lymphocytes, which were transfected in vitro with the plasmid DNA or in vivo with Lipofectamine. The expression profile of the fusion gene (ChIL-2-EGFP) in vivo was measured by RT-PCR, ELISA and fluorescence microscopy. The EGFP expression was detected from 8 h p.i. to 14 days p.i. and peaked at 5 days p.i., when the number of EGFP-expression myocytes was about 5% in the injected site. These results demonstrate that intramuscular administration of plasmid DNA leads to widespread distribution and long-term expression in vivo.

Objective: To study the signs of subclavian artery angiography for hemoptysis due to pulmonary tuberculosis and to evaluate its clinical use in artery embolization., Methods: Thirty-nine patients with hemoptysis due to pulmonary tuberculosis underwent subclavian artery angiography after artery embolization performed in the hemorrhagic branches of descending aorta. Of the 39 cases, 25 had severe pulmonary fibrosis or were complicated with cavity formation, aspergilloma, pleural thickening and postoperative thorax. The signs of subclavian artery angiography were divided into three categories: (-), normal; (+), the branches of subclavian artery and axillary artery chaotic and hyperplasia; (+ +), the branches of subclavian artery and axillary artery appeared tortuosity, dilatation, aneurysm and shunt with pulmonary circulation. Signs of bleeding was designated (+) and (+ +), with (+ +) indicating strongly positive. The signs of subclavian artery angiography were studied and statistically analyzed. Artery embolization was performed in some of the patients, among whom 15 were analyzed for long-term clinical curative effect., Results: Signs of positive bleeding was found in 32/39 of the cases, and strongly positive bleeding in 17/39 of the cases. Positive bleeding arteries accounted for 39/58 of the branches, including 24/58 (+ +) and 15/58 (+). Angiography demonstrated that the internal mammary artery, lateral thoracic artery and subscapular artery were the main hemorrhagic arteries. Patients with severe pulmonary fibrosis or complicated with cavity, aspergilloma, pleural thickening and postoperative thorax showed higher rate of positive and strongly positive bleeding. Artery embolization was performed in 15 cases: cure was achieved in 6, effective in 7 and failure in 2 cases. Of the 15 cases, 8 had been ineffective after embolization of the hemorrhagic branches of descending aorta alone., Conclusions: Our results suggest that corresponding subclavian artery angiography should be performed after the hemorrhagic branches of descending aorta artery have been embolized for hemoptysis due to pulmonary tuberculosis, especially in cases with failed embolization, or complicated with severe pulmonary fibrosis, cavity formation, aspergilloma, pleural thickening, or postoperative thorax. The hemorrhagic arteries shown by subclavian artery angiography must be embolized.

Objective: To study the CT manifestations of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) after glucocorticoid treatment., Methods: The diagnosis of COP was made based on clinical and radiological features and confirmed by lung biopsy and pathological examination in 21 cases from 2001 to 2005. CT follow-up was carried out 5 - 75 days following therapy. The follow-up lasted 3 - 43 months. All data were analyzed and relevant literatures were reviewed., Results: There were 2 male an 19 female patients with ages of 39 - 74 years. CT scans revealed multiple patchy shadows or patchy air-space consolidations, often by a predominantly subpleural and/or basal distribution. Ground-glass opacities and bronchiectasis were common findings. Migratory lesions were found in some patients. Glucocorticoid treatment resulted in significant improvement in most cases. Cure was achieved in 4 cases, significant improvement in 16, and failure in 1 case. Recurrence was found in 2 cases., Conclusions: The diagnosis of COP requires combination of clinical, CT and pathological manifestations. The effect of glucocorticoid therapy can be evaluated by repeated CT scanning.

Triplet-triplet (TT) energy transfer requires two molecular fragments to exchange electrons that carry different spin and energy. In this paper, we analyze and report values of the electronic coupling strengths for TT energy transfer. Two different methods were proposed and tested: (1) Directly calculating the off-diagonal Hamiltonian matrix element. This direct coupling scheme was generalized from the one used for electron transfer coupling, where two spin-localized unrestricted Hartree-Fock wave functions are used as the zero-order reactant and product states, and the off-diagonal Hamiltonian matrix elements are calculated directly. (2) From energy gaps derived from configuration-interaction-singles (CIS) scheme. Both methods yielded very similar results for the systems tested. For TT coupling between a pair of face-to-face ethylene molecules, the exponential attenuation factor is 2.59 A(-1)(CIS6-311+G(**)), which is about twice as large as typical values for electron transfer. With a series of fully stacked polyene pairs, we found that the TT coupling magnitudes and attenuation rates are very similar irrespective of their molecular size. If the polyenes were partially stacked, TT couplings were much reduced, and they decay more rapidly with distance than those of full-stacked systems. Our results showed that the TT coupling arises mainly from the region of close contact between the donor and acceptor frontier orbitals, and the exponential decay of the coupling with separation depends on the details of the molecular contacts. With our calculated results, nanosecond or picosecond time scales for TT energy-transfer rates are possible.

To evaluate the characteristics of chicken interleukin-18 (ChIL-18) in different forms in vitro, the ChIL-18 full-length gene (ChIL-18-F) and the ChIL-18 presumed mature protein gene (ChIL-18-M) were cloned and inserted into the eukaryotic expression vector pCI, to construct recombinant pCI-ChIL-18-F and pCI-ChIL-18-M. The recombinant plasmids were then transferred into chicken splenic lymphocytes (CSLs). Western blot showed that ChIL-18-F, with a molecular weight of 23.0 kDa, was produced in CSLs transfected by pCI-ChIL-18-F; ChIL-18-M, with a molecular weight of 19.5 kDa, was produced in CSLs transfected by pCI-ChIL-18-M. The nitric oxide (NO) level in the transfected CSLs and the culture medium at different time points was further examined under confocal microscopy using 4,5-diaminofluorescein staining. The results showed that both pCI-ChIL-18-F and pCI-ChIL-18-M groups showed significant increase in intracellular and extracellular NO production compared with pCI transfected control cells. These results suggest that both ChIL-18-F and ChIL-18-M could stimulate NO secretion in CSLs. To characterize the intracellular distribution of ChIL-18, ChIL-18-F and ChIL-18-M were each fused to the enhanced green fluorescent protein gene, and expressed in Vero cells. The results showed that the ChIL-18-F tended to the membranous region in Vero cells, while ChIL-18-M did not. This indicates that the N-terminal 27 amino acid peptide helped ChIL-18 target to Vero cell membranes.

The charge transport properties of mer-tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum(III) (mer-Alq), which is the most widely used electron transport material in OLED, were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations within the framework of the charge hopping model and Marcus electron transfer theory. Internal reorganization energies of 0.276 and 0.242 eV were calculated by the DFT-B3LYP method employing a 6-31 G* basis set for the electrons lambdai(e) and holes lambdai(h), respectively. The relative distances and orientations of Alq molecules in amorphous film were simulated by those in the beta-phase. The intermolecular charge-transfer integrals, Hda(h) and Hda(e), along all 14 hopping pathways were then calculated by the Koopmans Theorem in conjunction with the Hartree-Fock method employing a 6-31 G* basis set as well as by the direct coupling method. The results showed that there were some Hda(e) that were 1 order of magnitude larger than any Hda(h), because hopping pathways with effective overlaps of LUMOs can occur and, thus, large Hda(e). On the other hand, effective overlap of HOMO was absent in all pathways, resulting in a relatively small Hda(h). This difference in the magnitudes of Hda(e) and Hda(h) would predict a 2 orders of magnitude difference in the electron-transfer rate constants and account for the observed 2 orders of magnitude difference in the mobilities of electrons and holes.

Objective: To analyze the clinical and radiological manifestations of primary pulmonary schwannoma in order to improve the diagnosis of this rare disease., Methods: Seven cases of primary pulmonary schwannoma which was confirmed by pathology of surgical specimens were retrospectively analyzed., Results: Three cases were benign (1 of pulmonary parenchymal origin and 2 of bronchial origin) and 4 were malignant (3 of pulmonary parenchymal origin and 1 of bronchial origin). There were four male and three female patients, age ranging from 31 to 74 years. All the 7 cases had chest X-ray films and 6 cases had chest CT examinations. The major complains included slight hemoptysis, cough, fever, chest pain and shortness of breath. Bronchoscopy showed bronchial tumors in 3 cases and partial stenosis of bronchus in 2 cases. Radiology showed nodules in the left main bronchus in 2 cases. Solitary mass was found in 4 cases and multiple masses (2 lesions) were found in one patient. The margin of the lesions was smooth in 3 cases (one malignant and two benign) and irregular in another three cases (all malignant). Chest CT showed reticular enhancement in one case (benign), heterogeneous enhancement in 4 cases (3 malignant and 1 benign), and peripheral enhancement with a large central hypodense area in one case (malignant). Compression of the trachea and ribs was prominent in 2 patients. Pleural effusion and blood vessel infiltration were evident in 3 patients with malignant schwannoma., Conclusion: Primary pulmonary schwannoma is rare. The symptoms and CT manifestations are nonspecific. The size and the density of the tumor are not helpful in differentiating malignant schwannoma from the benign one. Marginal irregularity and invasion of adjacent structures are suggestive of malignancy.
