Drought is one of the meteorological disasters to which maize is most vulnerable during its seedling stage in Northeast China. The absence of phenological data impedes the precise evaluation of the likelihood of drought during this phase. In response to these issues, this study develops a phenology model and reconstructing the data. Furthermore, it effectively assessed drought risk at the site scale by utilizing drought indicators. Using reconstructed phenological data from 217 sites from 1981 to 2015, we analysed the duration and trends of each phenological period and assessed the spatial and temporal distribution of drought frequency at each growth stage. The study demonstrated that the average date ranges for the sowing, emergence, three‐leaf, and seven‐leaf stages annually were 115–138 days, 130–151 days, 135–160 days, and 150–180 days, respectively. Additionally, there was a significant trend towards earlier dates in all phenological stages. Our research reveals notable fluctuations in drought frequency during various growth stages of early maize in Northeast China. Particularly, the period from the three‐leaf to the seven‐leaf stages emerges as the most drought‐prone, while the initial emergence to three‐leaf stage also shows considerable vulnerability. On average, the frequency of drought events during the critical three‐ to seven‐leaf stage stands at 35%. This average is surpassed in regions like Heilongjiang, northwest Jilin, northern Inner Mongolia, and southwest Liaoning, indicating a heightened risk in these areas. The early maize growth stage drought types are mainly light and moderate drought, with the three‐leaf to seven‐leaf stage, and Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia, as the key stages and regions of concern, respectively. The Northeast region of China and Huang Huai Hai (3H) region are vital maize production bases in northern China that are crucial for national food security. The absence of phenological data hinders a detailed assessment of the alignment between maize development stages and climatic resources. This study combines the authors' maize phenology data with climate suitability modeling to evaluate maize's climate suitability at different developmental stages in both regions. This study shows that during the maize growth cycle, the average temperature, precipitation, sunshine, and comprehensive climate suitability were 0.77, 0.49, 0.87, and 0.65, respectively, in the Northeast. In contrast, the average temperature, precipitation, sunshine, and comprehensive climate suitability in the 3H region were 0.98, 0.53, 0.73, and 0.70, respectively. Precipitation is a major factor influencing maize growth, with temperature and sunshine impacting growth differently across regions. Temperature significantly affects maize in the Northeast, while sunshine plays a greater role in the 3H region. The Northeast is suitable for drought-resistant maize varieties, and implementing a late harvest policy in Liaoning could enhance maize yield. The 3H region generally has favorable climatic conditions. Apart from certain parts of Henan needing drought-resistant varieties, areas with ample growing seasons can adopt long-duration varieties to maximize thermal resource utilization. Our results have important implications for optimizing maize planting strategies and enhancing regional resilience, aiming to assess meteorological factors' impact on maize growth in key production areas. Changes in land cover (LC) are the major factors influencing the hydrological processes within a watershed. Understanding the impacts of LC on watershed hydrology is crucial for planning and predicting land resource utilization, water resources, and sustaining hydrological balance. This study assesses the hydrological responses of LC changes in the Muger watershed located in the Upper Blue Nile River Basin (UBNRB) from 1986 to 2020. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model to investigate the effects of LC on the hydrological process. The simulations were driven by several datasets, such as watershed elevations, mean climatology, hydrology and soil datasets, and LC satellite maps for three time periods (i.e., satellite imagery taken in 1986, 2003, and 2020). We found that the key LC changes that affected hydrological parameters in the Muger watershed are changes in cultivation land, forest land, and settlement. The expansion of cultivation land and shrinkage of forest and shrub lands triggered surface runoff and a reduction in groundwater between 1986 and 2003. Additionally, settlement was identified as the primary factor contributing to increases in evapotranspiration (ET) and surface runoff. The LC changes that occurred between 1986 and 2020 reduced the average annual, wet season, and dry season streamflow. Between 2003 and 2020, surface runoff decreased by 3.71% due to the effect of land landscape restoration interventions. The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement Final Run (IMERGF) product has now been upgraded to Version 4 (V4), which has been available since March 2017. Therefore, it is desirable to evaluate the characteristic differences between the V4 and the previous V3 products. A comprehensive performance evaluation of the errors of the successive V3 and V4 IMERGF products is performed with a comparison of the China daily Precipitation Analysis Products (CPAP) from March 2014 to February 2015. The version 6 Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) research product (which is another Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) based precipitation product) is also used as a comparison in this study. Overall, the IMERGF-V4 product does not exhibit the anticipated improvement for China compared to the IMERGF-V3 product. An analysis of the metrics of annual daily average precipitation over China for the IMERGF-V3 and IMERGF-V4 products indicates a decrease of the relative bias (RB) from 3.70% to -7.18%, a decrease of the correlation coefficient (CC) from 0.91 to 0.89, an increase of the fractional standard error (FSE) from 0.49 to 0.56, and an increase of the root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 0.63 mm to 0.72 mm. Compared to the IMERGF-V3 product, the IMERGF-V4 product exhibits a significant underestimation of precipitation in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau with a much lower RB of -60.91% (-58.19%, -65.30%, and -63.74%) based on the annual (summer, autumn, and winter) daily average precipitation and an even worse performance during winter (-72.33% of RB). In comparison, the GSMaP product outperforms the IMERGF-V3 and IMERGF-V4 products and has the smallest RMSE (0.47 mm/day), highest CC (0.95), lowest FSE (0.37), and best performance of the RB (-2.39%) in terms of annual daily precipitation over China. Three kinds of climate change simulation devices are used for study elevated CO2 concentration and air temperature increase: 1)Open system: Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) with Infrared Heating(IH); 2)Half-open system: Open-Top Chamber (OTC); 3)Close system: Environment Chamber(EC). But the extremely high hardware and running cost of FACE and IH are the main restricts for their application. EC system cannot represent the really condition with large extent of crop growth environment change. Traditional OTC system with much lower cost has nearly the same growth condition for crop, but it is a passive temperature increasing system and has no CO2 addition. To well use the advantage of Half-open OTC technique for climate change simulation, we improved the traditional Open-Top Chamber (OTC) device by adding heating module, CO2 injection module and air exchange module. A hexagonal OTC was designed with 1.2m side length and 2.5m height, and the CO2 tank used for CO2 injection source and semiconductor sheet sealed for the heating system. Air heating and CO2 injection were automatically controlled when pumping outside air into OTC by fans to simulate the elevated air temperature and CO2 concentration scenario. We applied the improved OTC in early rice season, and the OTC was emplaced in the real rice paddy field without obstacle at the bottom for water supply. And air temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration were measured by every 2 min. The results showed that the difference of daily mean deviation of air temperature of the controlled OTC and the objective simulation temperature can be controlled less than ±0.2℃ with the largest difference of -0.58℃, and the controlled deviation of CO2 concentration was -39.4~4.8 μL/L. This research indicated that the improved OTC can be applied to simulate the elevated air temperature and CO2 concentration of the future climate change scenario. Meanwhile, the relative humidity in improved OTC is also showed that relative humidity (RH) nearly has no change without temperature increase, and would increase by 2% if air temperature increased.
