Using corn starch (CS) as the film substrate, citric acid as the crosslinking agent, and Pickering emulsion prepared with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)-emulsified orange peel essential oil (OPO) as the antibacterial agent, an antibacterial composite film (CS/CNC-OPO) was successfully prepared by the casting method. The effects of different contents of CNC and OPO on the mechanical strength, water vapor transmission rate, water contact angle and antibacterial properties of the composite film were analyzed, and the composite film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the performance of the CS/CNC-OPO antibacterial film was the best when 11% OPO was added and the CNC-to-OPO ratio was 1:11 (g/mL). The antibacterial film had the following properties: water vapor permeability, 1.03 × 10-3 g/(m·h·kPa); water contact angle, 74.53°; and tensile strength 6.01 MPa. The area of inhibition zone of the film against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was up to 88.4 and 96.45 mm2, respectively. Therefore, the starch-based film has good strength, hydrophobic and antibacterial properties, and has broad application prospects in the field of food packaging.

Abstract To identify risk factors and biomarker for early recurrence in patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer who undergo curative resection. Early recurrence after curative resection of pancreatic cancer is an obstacle to long-term survival. We retrospectively reviewed 162 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer who underwent curative resection. Early recurrence was defined as recurrence within 12 months of surgery. We selected S100A2 as a biomarker and investigated its expression using immunohistochemistry. Of the total, 79.6% (n = 129) of patients received adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery and 117 (72.2%) experienced recurrence, of which 73 (45.1%) experience early recurrence. BackgroundIncreasing evidence shows that alterations in gut microbiome (GM) contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) successfully treats various human diseases. However, the benefits of FMT therapy to T2DM patients remain unknown.MethodsWe enrolled 17 patients with T2DM for nonblinded, one-armed intervention trial of FMT. A total of 20 healthy individuals were recruited as the baseline control. Abstract Background The deep learning-based nodule detection (DLD) system improves nodule detection performance of observers on chest radiographs (CXRs). However, its performance in different pulmonary nodule (PN) locations remains unknown. Methods We divided the CXR intrathoracic region into non-danger zone (NDZ) and danger zone (DZ). The DZ included the lung apices, paramediastinal areas, and retrodiaphragmatic areas, where nodules could be missed. We used a dataset of 300 CXRs (100 normal and 200 abnormal images with 216 PNs [107 NDZ and 109 DZ nodules]). Eight observers (two thoracic radiologists [TRs], two non-thoracic radiologists [NTRs], and four radiology residents [RRs]) interpreted each radiograph with and without the DLD system. The metric of lesion localization fraction (LLF; the number of correctly localized lesions divided by the total number of true lesions) was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance according to the nodule location. Results The DLD system demonstrated a lower LLF for the detection of DZ nodules (64.2) than that of NDZ nodules (83.2, p = 0.008). Abstract Background TP53 is the most frequently mutated gene in the human cancer, and the awareness of its mutational status is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. In the present study, we investigated the association between TP53 gene mutations and p53 immunohistochemical staining (IHC) patterns and non-genetic effect of MDM2 as a negative regulator of p53. Methods A total of 135 solid cancer cases with next generation sequencing data were subjected to p53 IHC and classified as overexpression, null type or usual pattern. Results TP53 mutation was observed in 104 out of 135 cases (77.0%). When the TP53 mutations were annotated into DISRUPTED (truncations, frameshifts, splice site mutations, and deep deletions) and IF-DBD (in-frame mutations in the DNA binding domain), the null type p53 IHC pattern was associated with DISRUPTED mutations (sensitivity 86.2%, specificity 97.2%) while the overexpression pattern was associated with IF-DBD mutations (sensitivity 100%, specificity 81.7%). The specificity of p53 IHC usual pattern predicting wild type TP53 was also as high as 100%. Regardless of MDM2 amplification, p53 IHC pattern showed a perfect association with TP53 mutation pattern. Conclusions p53 IHC pattern (overexpression, null type, usual) reasonably predicted TP53 mutational status (DISRUPTED, IF-DBD), and MDM2 amplification status did not have any impact on the p53 IHC pattern.

Abstract Realistic image synthesis based on deep learning is an invaluable technique for developing high-performance computer aided diagnosis systems while protecting patient privacy. However, training a generative adversarial network (GAN) for image synthesis remains challenging because of the large amounts of data required for training various kinds of image features. This study aims to synthesize retinal images indistinguishable from real images and evaluate the efficacy of the synthesized images having a specific disease for augmenting class imbalanced datasets. The synthesized images were validated via image Turing tests, qualitative analysis by retinal specialists, and quantitative analyses on amounts and signal-to-noise ratios of vessels. The efficacy of synthesized images was verified by deep learning-based classification performance. Turing test shows that accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 54.0 ± 12.3%, 71.1 ± 18.8%, and 36.9 ± 25.5%, respectively. Here, sensitivity represents correctness to find real images among real datasets. Vessel amounts and average SNR comparisons show 0.43% and 1.5% difference between real and synthesized images. The classification performance after augmenting synthesized images outperforms every ratio of imbalanced real datasets. Our study shows the realistic retina images were successfully generated with insignificant differences between the real and synthesized images and shows great potential for practical applications.

Objectives: Changes in the epidemiology of group A streptococcus (GAS) infection is related to emm genotype. We studied the distribution of emm genotypes and their antibiotic susceptibility among Korean children. Methods: Isolates from children with GAS infection between 2012 and 2019 were collected. emm typing and cluster analysis was performed according to the Centers for Disease Control emm cluster classification. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the E-test and resistance genes were analyzed for macrolide resistant phenotypes. Results: Among 169 GAS isolates, 115 were from children with scarlet fever. Among invasive isolates, emm1 (6/22, 27.3%), emm12 (4/22, 18.2%), and emm4 (4/22, 18.2%) were most common. In scarlet fever, although emm4 (38/115, 33.0%) was the most prevalent throughout the study period, emm4 was replaced by emm3 (28/90, 31.1%) during an outbreak in 2017–2018. Among all isolates, only 2 (1.2%) exhibited erythromycin resistance and harbored both ermA and ermB genes. Conclusions: In this analysis of GAS isolated from Korean children, emm1 was the most prevalent in invasive infection. In scarlet fever, emm4 was prevalent throughout the study period, with an increase in emm3 during 2017–2018. GAS isolates during 2012–2019 demonstrated low erythromycin resistance.
