Search

Materials with topological flat bands can serve as a promising platform to investigate strongly interacting phenomena. However, experimental realization of ideal flat bands is mostly limited to artificial lattices or moir\'e systems. Here we report a general way to construct one-dimensional (1D) flat bands in phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs) with pentagonal nature: penta-hexa-PNRs and penta-dodeca-PNRs, wherein the corresponding flat bands are directly verified by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We confirm that the observed 1D flat bands originate from the electronic 1D sawtooth and Lieb lattices, respectively, as revealed by the combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, tight-binding models, and first-principles calculations. As a promising technique, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) exhibit its tremendous potential for high accuracy positioning. In this paper, we investigates multi-user localization and tracking problem in multi-RISs-assisted system. In particular, we incorporate statistical spatiotemporal correlation of multi-user locations and develop a general spatiotemporal Markov random field model (ST-+MRF) to capture multi-user dynamic motion states. To achieve superior performance, a novel multi-user tracking algorithm is proposed based on Bayesian inference to effectively utilize the correlation among users. Besides that, considering the necessity of RISs configuration for tracking performance, we further propose a predictive RISs beamforming optimization scheme via semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Compared to other pioneering work, finally, we confirm that the proposed strategy by alternating tracking algorithm and RISs optimization, can achieve significant performance gains over benchmark schemes.

Active Target Time Projection Chambers (AT-TPCs) are state-of-the-art tools in the field of low-energy nuclear physics, particularly suitable for experiments using low-intensity radioactive ion beams or gamma rays. The Fudan Multi-purpose Active Target Time Projection Chamber (fMeta-TPC) with 2048 channels has been developed to study $\alpha$-clustering nuclei. {\fcb In this work, the focus is on the study of the photonuclear reaction with the Laser Compton Scattering (LCS) gamma source, especially for the decay of the highly excited $\alpha$-cluster state.} The design of fMeta-TPC is described and a comprehensive evaluation of its offline performance is performed by ultraviolet (UV) laser and $^{241}$Am $\alpha$ source. The result shows that the intrinsic angular resolution of the detector is within 0.30$^{\circ}$ and has an energy resolution of 6.85\% for 3.0 MeV $\alpha$ particles. The gain uniformity of the detector is about 10\% (RMS/Mean), tested by the $^{55}$Fe X-ray source., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

A recent experiment has reported a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride acheving a remarkable Tc of 294 K at just 1 GPa, significantly reducing the required pressure for obtaining room temperature superconductivity. However, subsequent experimental and theoretical investigations have encountered difficulties in replicating these results, leaving the structure of this Lu-H-N compound shrouded in uncertainty. Here, we propose a stable structure for Lu$_4$H$_7$N employing first-principles calculations. Our calculations reveal that Lu$_4$H$_7$N has a Tc of 1.044 K, which can be substantially enhanced to 11.721 K at 150 GPa, due to the increasing electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Notably, we delve into the nontrivial Z2 band topology of Lu$_4$H$_7$N, featuring discernible surface states near the Fermi level, and we explore its spin Hall conductivity characteristics. Furthermore, we find that the electron doping can enhance the EPC strength and Tc of Lu$_4$H$_7$N, such as the Lu$_4$H$_7$O structure we predict simulating electron doping for Lu$_4$H$_7$N with an impressive Tc of 3.837 K. This work demonstrates the coexistence of superconducting and topological properties in a Lu-H-N system compound, which holds the promise of guiding the search for novel topological superconducting materials.

La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has garnered widespread interest recently due to its high-temperature superconductivity under pressure, accompanied by charge density wave (CDW) ordering and metal-insulator (MI) transitions in the phase diagram. Here, we reveal with comprehensive calculations that La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ possesses an antiferromagnetic ground state under both low and high pressures, with the strong Fermi surface nesting contributed by the flat band that leads to phonon softening and electronic instabilities. Several stable CDW orders with oxygen octahedral distortions are identified, which can trigger the MI transitions. The estimated CDW transition temperature ($\approx$120 K) at ambient pressure agrees nicely with experimental results. In the presence of apical oxygen vacancies, we identify two different phases, say, half distortion and full distortion phases, respectively, and their competition can lead to a pressure-induced MI transition, in good agreement with experimental observations. In addition, we find that the electron-phonon coupling is too small to contribute to superconductivity. These results appear to indicate an unconventional superconducting pairing mechanism mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. A phase diagram that is consistent with the experimental results is given. The present results not only explain the origins of experimentally observed CDW and MI transitions, but also provide insight for deeply understanding the properties like superconductivity, CDW and the role of oxygen vacancies in pressurized La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Doping nonmagnetic semiconductors with magnetic impurities is a feasible way to obtain diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs). It is generally accepted that for the most extensively studied DMS, (Ga, Mn)As, its highest Curie temperature T$_{\text{C}}$ was achieved at 200 K with a Mn concentration of approximately 16% in experiments. A recent experiment reported record-breaking high electron and hole mobilities in the semiconductor BAs [Science 377, 437 (2022)]. Since BAs shares the same zinc-blende structure with GaAs, here we predict four DMSs (B, Mn)X (X = N, P, As, Sb) by density functional theory calculations. Our results indicate that a significantly higher T$_{\text{C}}$ in the range of 254 K to 300 K for (B, Mn)As with a Mn concentration of around 15.6%, and even higher T$_{\text{C}}$ values above the room temperature for (B, Mn)N and (B, Mn)P with a Mn concentration exceeding 12.5%. Furthermore, we have predicted a large hole mobility of 1561 cm$^{\text{2}}$V$^{\text{-1}}$s$^{\text{-1}}$ at 300 K for (B, Mn)As with a Mn concentration of about 3.7%, which is three orders of magnitude larger than the hole mobility of 4 cm$^{\text{2}}$V$^{\text{-1}}$s$^{\text{-1}}$ at 300 K observed in the experiment for (Ga, Mn)As. Our findings predict the emergence of a new family of DMS, (B, Mn)X, and are expected to stimulate both experimental and theoretical studies of the DMS with high T$_{\text{C}}$ and high mobilities.

Chirality, a fundamental structural property of crystals, can induce many unique topological quantum phenomena. In kagome lattice, unconventional transports have been reported under tantalizing chiral charge order. Here, we show how by deforming the kagome lattice to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) chiral kagome lattice in which the key band features of the non-chiral 2D kagome lattice - flat energy bands, van Hove singularities (VHSs), and degeneracies - remain robust in both the $k_z$ = 0 and $\pi$ planes in momentum space. Given the handedness of our kagome lattice, degenerate momentum points possess quantized Chern numbers, ushering in the realization of Weyl fermions. Our 3D chiral kagome lattice surprisingly exhibits 1D behavior on its surface, where topological surface Fermi arc states connecting Weyl fermions are dispersive in one momentum direction and flat in the other direction. These 1D Fermi arcs open up unique possibilities for generating unconventional non-local transport phenomena at the interfaces of domains with different handedness, and the associated enhanced conductance as the separation of the leads on the surface is increased. Employing first-principles calculations, we investigate in-depth the electronic and phononic structures of representative materials within the ten space groups that can support topological chiral kagome lattices. Our study opens a new research direction that integrates the advantages of structural chirality with those of a kagome lattice and thus provides a new materials platform for exploring unique aspects of correlated topological physics in chiral lattices., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The recently discovered ATi$_3$Bi$_5$ (A=Cs, Rb) exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena including superconductivity, electronic nematicity, and abundant topological states, which provide promising platforms for studying kagome superconductivity, band topology, and charge orders. In this work, we comprehensively study various properties of ATi$_3$Bi$_5$ including superconductivity under pressure and doping, band topology under pressure, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, electrical resistance, and spin Hall conductivity (SHC) using first-principles calculations. Calculated superconducting transition temperature ($\mathrm{ T_{c}}$) of CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ and RbTi$_3$Bi$_5$ at ambient pressure are about 1.85 and 1.92K. When subject to pressure, $\mathrm{ T_{c}}$ of CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ exhibits a special valley and dome shape, which arises from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional isotropic compression within the context of an overall decreasing trend. Furthermore, $\mathrm{ T_{c}}$ of RbTi$_3$Bi$_5$ can be effectively enhanced up to 3.09K by tuning the kagome van Hove singularities (VHSs) and flat band through doping. Pressure can also induce abundant topological surface states at the Fermi energy ($\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{F}}$) and tune VHSs across $\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{F}}$. Additionally, our transport calculations are in excellent agreement with recent experiments, confirming the absence of charge density wave. Notably, SHC of CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ can reach as large as 226$ \hbar\cdot (e\cdot \Omega \cdot cm) ^{-1} $ at $\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{F}}$. Emergent phases often appear when the electronic kinetic energy is comparable to the Coulomb interactions. One approach to seek material systems as hosts of such emergent phases is to realize localization of electronic wavefunctions due to the geometric frustration inherent in the crystal structure, resulting in flat electronic bands. Recently, such efforts have found a wide range of exotic phases in the two-dimensional kagome lattice, including magnetic order, time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order, nematicity, and superconductivity. However, the interlayer coupling of the kagome layers disrupts the destructive interference needed to completely quench the kinetic energy. Here we demonstrate that an interwoven kagome network-a pyrochlore lattice-can host a three dimensional (3D) localization of electron wavefunctions. Meanwhile, the nonsymmorphic symmetry of the pyrochlore lattice guarantees all band crossings at the Brillouin zone X point to be 3D gapless Dirac points, which was predicted theoretically but never yet observed experimentally. Through a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, fundamental lattice model and density functional theory calculations, we investigate the novel electronic structure of a Laves phase superconductor with a pyrochlore sublattice, CeRu$_2$. We observe flat bands originating from both the Ce 4$f$ orbitals as well as from the 3D destructive interference of the Ru 4$d$ orbitals. We further observe the nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected 3D gapless Dirac cones at the X point. Ongoing advances in superconductors continue to revolutionize technology thanks to the increasingly versatile and robust availability of lossless supercurrent. In particular high supercurrent density can lead to more efficient and compact power transmission lines, high-field magnets, as well as high-performance nanoscale radiation detectors and superconducting spintronics. Here, we report the discovery of an unprecedentedly high superconducting critical current density (17 MA/cm2 at 0 T and 7 MA/cm2 at 8 T) in 1T'-WS2, exceeding those of all reported two-dimensional superconductors to date. 1T'-WS2 features a strongly anisotropic (both in- and out-of-plane) superconducting state that violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit signaling the presence of unconventional superconductivity. Spectroscopic imaging of the vortices further substantiates the anisotropic nature of the superconducting state. More intriguingly, the normal state of 1T'-WS2 carries topological properties. The band structure obtained via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations points to a Z2 topological invariant. The concomitance of topology and superconductivity in 1T'-WS2 establishes it as a topological superconductor candidate, which is promising for the development of quantum computing technology.

The two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors, such as CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, and the 2D ferromagnetic metals, such as Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and MnSe$_2$, have been obtained in recent experiments and attracted a lot of attentions. The superexchange interaction has been suggested to dominate the magnetic interactions in these 2D magnetic systems. In the usual theoretical studies, the expression of the 2D Heisenberg models were fixed by hand due to experiences. Here, we propose a method to determine the expression of the 2D Heisenberg models by counting the possible superexchange paths with the density functional theory (DFT) and Wannier function calculations. With this method, we obtain a 2D Heisenberg model with six different nearest-neighbor exchange coupling constants for the 2D ferromagnetic metal Cr$_3$Te$_6$, which is very different for the crystal structure of Cr atoms in Cr$_3$Te$_6$. The calculated Curie temperature Tc = 328 K is close to the Tc = 344 K of 2D Cr$_3$Te$_6$ reported in recent experiment. In addition, we predict two stable 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors Cr$_3$O$_6$ and Mn$_3$O$_6$ sharing the same crystal structure of Cr$_3$Te$_6$. The similar Heisenberg models are obtained for 2D Cr$_3$O$_6$ and Mn$_3$O$_6$, where the calculated Tc is 218 K and 208 K, respectively. Our method offers a general approach to determine the expression of Heisenberg models for these 2D magnetic semiconductors and metals, and builds up a solid basis for further studies.

A kagome lattice of 3d transition metals hosts flat bands, Dirac fermions and saddle points. It provides a versatile platform for achieving topological superconductivity, anomalous Hall effect, unconventional density wave order and quantum spin liquid when the strong correlation, spin-orbit coupling or magnetic order are involved in such a lattice. Here, using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations, we investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$, which is isostructural to the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb or Cs) kagome superconductors and possesses a perfect two-dimensional kagome network of Titanium. We directly observed a strikingly flat band derived from the local destructive interferences of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattices. We also identify the type-II Dirac nodal loops around the Brillouin zone center, the type-III Dirac nodal loops around the zone corners and type-III Dirac nodal lines along the k$_z$ direction. In addition, around the Brillouin zone center, Z2 nontrivial topological surface states are also observed which is formed from the band inversion due to strong spin orbital coupling. The simultaneous existence of such multi-sets of nontrivial band structures in one kagome superconductor not only provides good opportunities to study related physics in the kagome lattice but also makes CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ an ideal system to realize noval quantum phenomena by manipulating its chemical potential with chemical doping or pressure.

Fabrication of new types of superconductors with novel physical properties has always been a major thread in the research of superconducting materials. An example is the enormous interests generated by the cascade of correlated topological quantum states in the newly discovered vanadium-based kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with a Z2 topological band structure. Here we report the successful fabrication of single-crystals of titanium-based kagome metal CsTi3Bi5 and the observation of superconductivity and electronic nematicity. The onset of the superconducting transition temperature Tc is around 4.8 K. In sharp contrast to the charge density wave superconductor AV3Sb5, we find that the kagome superconductor CsTi3Bi5 preserves translation symmetry, but breaks rotational symmetry and exhibits an electronic nematicity. The angular-dependent magnetoresistivity shows a remarkable two-fold rotational symmetry as the magnetic field rotates in the kagome plane. The scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopic imaging detect rotational-symmetry breaking C2 quasiparticle interference patterns (QPI) at low energies, providing further microscopic evidence for electronic nematicity. Combined with first-principle calculations, we find that the nematic QPI is orbital-selective and dominated by the Ti dxz and dyz orbitals, possibly originating from the intriguing orbital bond nematic order. Our findings in the new "135" material CsTi3Bi5 provide new directions for exploring the multi-orbital correlation effect and the role of orbital or bond order in the electron liquid crystal phases evidenced by the symmetry breaking states in kagome superconductors.

Topological superconductors (TSC) become a focus of research due to the accompanying Majorana fermions. However, the experimentally reported TSC are extremely rare. The recent experiments reported the kagome TSC AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ (A=K, Rb, Cs), which exhibit unique superconductivity, topological surface states (TSS), and Majorana bound states. More recently, the first titanium-based kagome superconductor CsTi$ _{3} $Bi$ _{5} $ with nontrivial topology was successfully synthesized as a perspective TSC. Given that Cs contributes little to the electronic structures of CsTi$ _{3} $Bi$ _{5} $ and binary compounds may be easier to be synthesized, here, by density functional theory calculations, we predict five stable non-magnetic kagome compounds Ti$ _{6} $X$ _{4} $ (X = Bi, Sb, Pb, Tl, In) which exhibit superconductivity with critical temperature Tc = 3.8$ - $5.1 K, nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}$$_2$ band topology, and TSS close to the Fermi level. In addition, the large intrinsic spin Hall effect is obtained in Ti$ _{6} $X$ _{4} $, which is caused by gapped Dirac nodes and nodal lines due to a strong spin-orbit coupling. This work offers new platforms for TSC and spintronic devices.

Since the discovery of a new family of vanadium-based kagome superconductor AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with topological band structures, extensive effort has been devoted to exploring the origin of superconducting states and the intertwined orders. Meanwhile, searching for new types of superconductors with novel physical properties and higher superconducting transition temperatures has always been a major thread in the history of superconductor research. Here we report a successful fabrication and the topological states of a Titanium-based kagome metal CsTi3Bi5 (CT3B5) crystal. The as-grown CT3B5 crystal is of high quality and possesses a perfect two-dimensional kagome net of Titanium. The superconductivity of the CT3B5 crystal shows that the critical temperature Tc is of ~4.8 K. First-principle calculations predict that the CT3B5 has robust topological surface states, implying that CT3B5 is a Z2 topological kagome superconductor. This finding provides a new type of superconductors and the base for exploring the origin of superconductivity and topological states in kagome superconductors.

Superconductivity in transition metal nitrides (TMNs) has been investigated for a long time, such as zirconium nitride (ZrN) with a superconducting transition temperature Tc of 10 K. Recently, a phase diagram has been revealed in ZrNx with different nitrogen concentrations, which is very similar to that of high-temperature copper oxide superconductors. Here, we study the TMNs with face-centered cubic lattice, where ZrN and HfN have been experimentally obtained, and predict eight new stable superconductors by the first-principle calculations. We find that CuN has a high Tc of 30 K with a very strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) strength. In contrast to ZrN, CuN has softening acoustic phonons at the high symmetry point L, which accounts for its much stronger EPC. In addition, the highly symmetrical structure leads to topological protected nodal points and lines, such as the hourglass Weyl loop in kx/y/z = 0 plane and Weyl points in kx/y/z = 2{\pi}/a plane, as well as quadratic band touch at {\Gamma} point. CuN could be a topological superconductor. Recent experiments report a charge density wave (CDW) in the antiferromagnet FeGe, but the nature of the charge ordering and the associated structural distortion remains elusive. We discuss the structural and electronic properties of FeGe. Our proposed ground state phase accurately captures atomic topographies acquired by scanning tunneling microscopy. We show that the 2$\times$2$\times$1 CDW likely results from the Fermi surface nesting of hexagonal-prism-shaped kagome states. FeGe is found to exhibit distortions in the positions of the Ge atoms instead of the Fe atoms in the kagome layers. Using in-depth first-principles calculations and analytical modeling, we demonstrate that this unconventional distortion is driven by the intertwining of magnetic exchange coupling and CDW interactions in this kagome material. Movement of Ge atoms from their pristine positions also enhances the magnetic moment of the Fe kagome layers. Our study indicates that magnetic kagome lattices provide a material candidate for exploring the effects of strong electronic correlations on the ground state and their implications for transport, magnetic, and optical responses in materials.

The non-centrosymmetric topological material has attracted intense attention due to its superior characters as compared to the centrosymmetric one. On one side, the topological phase coming from global geometric properties of the quantum wave function remains unchanged, on the other side, abundant exotic phenomena are predicted to be merely emerged in non-centrosymmetric ones, due to the redistribution of local quantum geometry. Whereas, probing the local quantum geometry in non-centrosymmetric topological material remains challenging. Here, we report a non-centrosymmetric topological phase in ZrTe$_5$, probed by the nonlinear Hall (NLH) effect. The angle-resolved and temperature-dependent NLH measurement reveals the inversion and ab-plane mirror symmetries breaking under 30 K, consistent with our theoretical calculation. Our findings identify a new non-centrosymmetric phase of ZrTe$_5$ and provide a platform to probe and control local quantum geometry via crystal symmetries., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A group of newly discovered non-magnetic metal kagome structures AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) have aroused widespread interest in experiment and theory due to their unusual charge density wave (CDW) and intertwined superconductivity. However, they all possess weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and low superconducting transition temperature. Here, we performed high-throughput first-principles calculations on novel kagome candidates with AV3Sb5 prototype structure, and proposed 24 dynamically stable novel kagome metals. The calculation based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory shows that most of these metals are superconductors with much stronger EPC than the reported AV3Sb5 materials, and their superconducting transition temperatures Tc is between 0.3 and 5.0K. Additionally, several compounds, such as KZr3Pb5 with the highest Tc, are identified as Z2 topological metals with clear Dirac cone topological surface states near Fermi level. NaZr3As5 is shown to have possible CDW phases. Our results provide rich platforms for exploring various new physics with the prototype kagome structure, in which the coexistence of superconductivity and nontrivial topological nature provides promising insights on the discovery of topological superconductors.

Scene perception is essential for driving decision-making and traffic safety. However, fog, as a kind of common weather, frequently appears in the real world, especially in the mountain areas, making it difficult to accurately observe the surrounding environments. Therefore, precisely estimating the visibility under foggy weather can significantly benefit traffic management and safety. To address this, most current methods use professional instruments outfitted at fixed locations on the roads to perform the visibility measurement; these methods are expensive and less flexible. In this paper, we propose an innovative end-to-end convolutional neural network framework to estimate the visibility leveraging Koschmieder's law exclusively using the image data. The proposed method estimates the visibility by integrating the physical model into the proposed framework, instead of directly predicting the visibility value via the convolutional neural work. Moreover, we estimate the visibility as a pixel-wise visibility map against those of previous visibility measurement methods which solely predict a single value for an entire image. Thus, the estimated result of our method is more informative, particularly in uneven fog scenarios, which can benefit to developing a more precise early warning system for foggy weather, thereby better protecting the intelligent transportation infrastructure systems and promoting its development. To validate the proposed framework, a virtual dataset, FACI, containing 3,000 foggy images in different concentrations, is collected using the AirSim platform. Recently, three different magnetic states were observed experimentally in trilayer CrI3 under pressure,including ferromagnetic (FM)-upupup, FM-downupdown and FM-upupdown. To reveal the nature of the observed three magnetic states, we studied the magnetic properties of four possible stacking structures in trilayer CrI3: I (rhombohedral), II (monoclinic), III (hexagonal) and IV (triclinic). We find that all four stacking structures possess the FM-upupup ground state. After applying a few strains, the FM-downupdown becomes the ground state in II and III structures, and the FM-upupdown is preferred in IV structure, while the FM-upupup persists in I structure. Our results unveil that the three magnetic states observed in trilayer CrI3 may correspond to different stacking structures with small tensile strains, which can well interpret the experimentally obtained pressure dependent interlayer coupling and Curie temperature. Recently, the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 287 K has been experimentally obtained in the material composed of carbon, sulfur, and hydrogen under the high pressure of 267 GPa. The material structure is unknown yet, where the carbon and sulfur were added at a molar ratio of 1:1. Here, fixing the molar ratio of C : S = 1:1, we studied several possible C-S-H structures, and found a new stable structure C2S2H4 using the first-principles calculations. The C2S2H4 shows an insulator-to-metal transition and the superconducting ground state at the pressure of 64 GPa, and its Tc can reach 16.5 K at 300 GPa. In addition, we found another stable structure of C2S3H4, whose Tc is 47.4 K at 300 GPa. The calculations show that the added S atom in C2S3H4 breaks part of C-H bonds in C2S2H4, makes the vibration of H atom at a lower frequency, and thus enhances the electro-phonon coupling and Tc. Our results suggest that the molar ratio of C:S lower than 1:1 in the C-S-H systems may be favorable to enhance Tc. This can be useful to figure out the structure of the C-S-H material with room temperature Tc in the recent experiment.

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) systems hold promises of low-power-consuming spintronic devices, yet their practical applications are extremely impeded by the small energy gaps. Fabricating QSH materials with large gaps, especially under the guidance of design principles, is essential for both scientific research and practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that large on-site atomic spin-orbit coupling can be directly exploited via the intriguing substrate-orbital-filtering effect to generate large-gap QSH systems and experimentally realized on the epitaxially synthesized ultraflat bismuthene on Ag(111). Theoretical calculations reveal that the underlying substrate selectively filters Bi pz orbitals away from the Fermi level, leading pxy orbitals with nonzero magnetic quantum numbers, resulting in large topological gap of ~1 eV at the K point. The corresponding topological edge states are identified through scanning tunneling spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. Our findings provide general strategies to design large-gap QSH systems and further explore their topology-related physics.
