In this study, four previously undescribed flavonoids, named epimesatines P (1), Q (2), R (3), and S (4), were isolated from the aerial parts of Epimedium sagittatum Maxim. Their structures and absolute configurations were confirmed via spectroscopic analyses, quantum chemical electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, Mo2(OAc)4–induced ECD, and Rh2(OCOCF3)4–induced ECD experiments. Epimesatines Q and R were characterized by the presence of furan rings. A cytotoxicity assay demonstrated that epimesatines P–S exhibited significant inhibitory effects on the viability of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, with IC50 values ranging from 1.27 to 50.3 μM. Notably, epimesatines Q and R exhibited superior efficacy against MCF-7 cells compared to epimesatines P and S, suggesting that the presence of furan rings may enhance their activity against MCF-7 cells. Specifically, epimesatine Q displayed a more potent inhibitory effect at 1.27 μM compared to a positive control, docetaxel, which had an IC50 of 2.13 μM, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for breast cancer. Importantly, none of the tested compounds exhibited obvious toxicity toward MCF-10A human breast epithelial cells. Furthermore, compounds 1, 3, and 4 were found to significantly inhibit the expression of sphingosine kinase 1 (Sphk1) in MCF-7 cells.

Summary: Converging studies showed interstitial fluid (ISF) adjacent to blood vessels flows in adventitia along vasculature into heart and lungs. We aim to reveal circulatory pathways and regulatory mechanism of such adventitial ISF flow in rat model. By MRI, real-time fluorescent imaging, micro-CT, and histological analysis, ISF was found to flow in adventitial matrix surrounded by fascia and along systemic vessels into heart, then flow into lungs via pulmonary arteries and back to heart via pulmonary veins, which was neither perivascular tissues nor blood or lymphatic vessels. Under physiological conditions, speckle-like adventitial ISF flow rate was positively correlated with heart rate, increased when holding breath, became pulsative during heavy breathing. During cardiac or respiratory cycle, each dilation or contraction of heart or lungs can generate to-and-fro adventitial ISF flow along femoral veins. Discovered regulatory mechanisms of adventitial ISF flow along vasculature by heart and lungs will revolutionize understanding of cardiovascular system.

As graph neural networks continue to develop, knowledge graph embedding methods based on graph neural networks are receiving increasing attention from researchers. Compared with traditional methods, they can better handle the diversity and complexity of entities, and capture the multiple features and complex relationships of entities, thereby improving the representation ability and application value of knowledge graphs. This paper firstly outlines the development history of knowledge graphs and the basic concepts of knowledge graphs and graph neural networks. Secondly, it focuses on discussing the design ideas and algorithm frameworks of knowledge graph embedding based on graph convolution, graph neural networks, graph attention, and graph autoencoders. Then, it describes the performance of graph neural network knowledge graph embedding in tasks such as link prediction, entity alignment, knowledge graph reasoning, and knowledge graph completion, while supplementing some research on commonsense knowledge graphs with graph neural networks. Finally, this paper makes a comprehensive summary, and future research directions are outlined with respect to some challenges and issues in knowledge graph embedding.

Objective: To use three different 3D CNN algorithms and five different computed tomography (CT) window settings to study the effect on the results of artificial intelligence classification of lung lesions in different CT window techniques. Method: A total of 172 cases of peripheral lung cancer and 185 of focal pneumonia who underwent chest CT were analyzed. Three different 3D CNN algorithms were selected (ResNet, ResNext, and DenseNet) to divide the lesions into two groups. Five different CT window settings, including lung window (1500, 600), mediastinal window (350, 40), custom window 1 (SW1) (1000, 40), and custom window 2 (SW2) (1000, 100), were used retrospectively. We calculated classification accuracy, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and area under the curve (AUC). The ROC curve was compared in pairs. Results: The average classification accuracy of ResNet was the lowest in the mediastinal window (85.732%; AUC value: 0.871) and the highest in the full window (91.596%; AUC value: 0.946). The average classification accuracy of ResNext was the lowest in the mediastinal window (81.528%; AUC value: 0.814) and the highest in the full window (86.568%; AUC value: 0.882). The average classification accuracy of DenseNet was the lowest in the mediastinal window (87.954%; AUC value: 0.906) and the highest in the SW2 window (93.274%; AUC value: 0.951). Medcalc was used to compare ROC curves under five windows of three 3D CNN. The AUC values between mediastinal window and lung window, mediastinal window and SW1, and mediastinal window and SW2 were statistically significant. Conclusion: There is little difference in the diagnostic efficacy of the three 3D CNN. Different CT window settings have an influence on the results of CNN classification of the lung lesions, and the diagnostic efficiency of the three 3D CNN is the worst under the mediastinal window.

Extreme droughts are anticipated to have detrimental impacts on forest ecosystems, especially in water-limited regions, due to the influence of climate change. However, considerable uncertainty remains regarding the patterns in species-specific responses to extreme droughts. Here, we conducted a study integrating dendrochronology and remote sensing methods to investigate the mosaic-distributed maple-oak (native) natural forests and poplar plantations (introduced) in the Horqin Sandy Land, Northeast China. We assessed the impacts of extreme droughts on tree performances by measuring interannual variations in radial growth and vegetation index. The results showed that precipitation and self-calibrated palmer drought severity index (scPDSI) are the major factors influencing tree-ring width index (RWI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The severe droughts between 2000 and 2004 resulted in reduced RWI in the three studied tree species as well as led to NDVI reductions in both the maple-oak natural forests and the poplar plantations. The RWI reached the nadir during the 2000–2004 severe droughts and remained at low levels two years after the severe drought, creating a legacy effect. In contrast to the lack of significant correlation between RWI and scPDSI, NDVI exhibited a significant positive correlation with scPDSI indicating the greater sensitivity of canopy performance to droughts than radial growth. Furthermore, interspecific differences in RWI and NDVI responses were observed, with the fast-growing poplar species experiencing a more significant RWI decrease and more negative NDVI anomaly during severe droughts than native species, highlighting the species-specific trade-offs between drought resilience and growth rate. This study emphasizes the importance of combining tree-level radial growth with landscape-scale canopy remote sensing to understand forest resilience and response. Our study improves our understanding of forest responses to extreme drought and highlights species differences in climate responses, offering crucial insights for optimizing species selection in sustainable afforestation and forest management in water-limited regions under the influence of climate change.

Floral trait variation may help pollinators and nectar robbers identify their target plants and, thus, lead to differential selection pressure for defense capability against floral antagonists. However, the effect of floral trait variation among individuals within a population on multi-dimensional plant-animal interactions has been little explored. We investigated floral trait variation, pollination, and nectar robbing among individual plants in a population of the bumble bee-pollinated plant, Caryopteris divaricata, from which flowers are also robbed by bumble bees with varying intensity across individuals. We measured the variation in corolla tube length, nectar volume and sugar concentration among individual plants, and evaluated whether the variation were recognized by pollinators and robbers. We investigated the influence of nectar robbing on legitimate visitation and seed production per fruit. We found that the primary nectar robber (Bombus nobilis) preferred to forage on plants with long-tubed flowers, which produced less nectar and had lower sugar concentration compared to those with shorter corolla tubes. Individuals with shorter corolla tubes had comparatively lower nectar robbing intensity but higher visitation by legitimate visitors (mainly B. picipes) and higher seed production. Nectar robbing significantly reduced seed production because it decreased pollinator visits. However, neither pollination nor seed production differed between plants with long and short corolla tubes when nectar robbers were excluded. This finding suggests that floral trait variation might not be driven by pollinators. Such variation among individual plants thus allows legitimate visitors and nectar robbers to segregate niches and enhances population defense against nectar robbing in unpredictable conditions.

The spin angular momentums of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on chiral material interfaces and the Imbert–Fedorov shifts of linearly polarized light beams are investigated. Compared to a traditional TM-polarized SPP having a transverse spin, the SPP on a chiral material interface also has a longitudinal spin component, resulting from the nature that this new kind of SPP is a hybrid of TE and TM-polarized evanescent waves. When a light beam is incident on a sandwich structure composed of chiral material, prisms, and metal layers, in which the SPP is supported, the reflection and transmission processes can be analogous to the transport of a photon in a waveguide QED system. The SPP with longitudinal spin can be excited by the incident wave and the reflected and transmitted beams carry the spin features of the SPP. Moreover, the beams exhibit large Imbert–Fedorov shifts stemming from the spin–orbit coupling even for a linearly polarized incident beam. The shifts are determined by the longitudinal spin angular momentum and excitation coefficient of the SPP. This present work extends the study of photonic spin–orbit coupling and provides an important platform to investigate the plasmonic spin.
