The case of a Japanese woman with glomeruloid hemangioma, an initial marker for POEMS syndrome, is reported. Her cutaneous lesions were multiple and consisted of glomeruloid hemangiomas, cherry-type capillary hemangiomas, and a mixture of both. The specimens of glomeruloid hemangiomas were studied by paraffin section immunohistochemistry with a large panel of antibodies and electron microscopy, respectively. The lesions, whose size ranged from minute foci to large nodules, were composed of anastomosing vascular channels resembling renal glomeruli and had irregular lumina, often featuring capillaries and sinusoid-like spaces. The vascular channels were lined by a single layer of endothelial cells, which showed two types of cells. The capillary-type endothelium possessed large vesicular nuclei with open chromatin and large amount of cytoplasm. The sinusoidal endothelium possessed small basal nuclei with dense chromatin as well as scant amount of cytoplasm. The former cells had a characteristic CD31 + /CD34 + /UEA I + /CD68 - phenotype. Some of these cells ultrastructurally showed intracytoplasmic lumen formation. The latter cells had a characteristic CD31 + /CD34 - /UEA I - /CD68 + phenotype. The present study shows that glomeruloid hemangioma has unique morphologic and immunologic features that differ from the traditional hemangiomas as well as littoral cell angioma of the spleen.

Magnetic properties, Mossbauer spectra and crystal structures of spin-crossover iron(III) complexes with a quinquedentate ligand [FeLX]BPh4 are reported. X and L denote a unidentate ligand and a quinquedentate ligand, respectively. [Fe(mbpN)(im)]BPh4 shows spin-crossover behavior in an appropriate organic solvent, and [Fe(mbpN)(lut)]BPh4, [Fe(bpN)(py)]BPh4 and [Fe(salten)X]BPh4 (X=4me-py or 2me-im) show spin-crossover behavior in a solid and in an organic solvent. It was found that the ligand field strength of salten was stronger than that of mbpN. The rates of spin-state interexchange in the complexes are as fast as the inverse of the lifetime (1×10−7 s) of the Mossbauer nuclear level. The Mossbauer spectroscopic behavior of [Fe(mbpN)(lut)]BPh4 and [Fe(bpN)(py)]BPh4 is different to that of [Fe(salten)X]BPh4 (X=4me-py or 2me-im). The difference was ascribed to the different geometrical positions of the corresponding anions.

New spin-crossover complexes [Fe(III)L(lut)]BPh4 (L = mbpN or bpN) with N4O2 moiety are reported. The structure of the mbpN (N3O2 quinquedentate ligand) complex is determined at 293 K, and the temperature dependences of the57Fe Mossbauer spectra and magnetic susceptibilities for both complexes have been examined.

Weekly concentration data for total phosphorus and total suspended solids, as well as mean weekly flow, were studied for a period of 229 weeks (mid 1979 to late 1983) at one station in the LaPlatte River Watershed of Vermont. the autocorrelation patterns in these data and their stationarity in the mean are described via selection of univariate ARIMA time series models. the relationship of the concentration data to the flow data is modelled by selection of a transfer function model. Contrasts are drawn between stationary and nonstationary (first order differenced) models. the relative advantage of the flow-dependent model for understanding trends in concentration is considered. the model provides a dynamic adjustment, or covariate analysis, of concentration changes due to flow, which would be critical in assessing intervention effects. Such a model also captures seasonal variation in concentration via the seasonal variation in flow.
