1. Impacts of Black-hole-forming Supernova Explosions on the Diffuse Neutrino Background

Abstract

The flux spectrum, event rate, and experimental sensitivity are investigated for the diffuse supernova (SN) neutrino background (DSNB), which originates from past stellar collapses and is also known as a supernova relic neutrino background. For this purpose, the contribution of collapses that lead to successful supernova explosion and black hole (BH) formation simultaneously, which are suggested to be a nonnegligible population from the perspective of Galactic chemical evolution, is taken into account. If the BH-forming SNe involve matter fallback onto the protoneutron star for the long term, their total emitted neutrino energy becomes much larger than that of ordinary SNe and failed SNe (BH formation without explosion). Then, in the case of the normal mass hierarchy in neutrino oscillations and with half of all core-collapse SNe being BH-forming SNe, the expected event rate according to the current DSNB model is enhanced by up to a factor of 2 due to the BH-forming SNe. While substantial uncertainties exist regarding the duration of the matter fallback, which determines the total amount of emitted neutrinos, and the fraction of BH-forming SNe, the operation time required to detect the DSNB at Hyper-Kamiokande would be reduced by such contribution in any case.

2. Diffuse Neutrino Flux Based on the Rates of Core-collapse Supernovae and Black Hole Formation Deduced from a Novel Galactic Chemical Evolution Model

Abstract

Fluxes of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) are calculated based on a new modeling of galactic chemical evolution, where a variable stellar initial mass function (IMF), depending on the galaxy type, is introduced and black hole (BH) formation from the failed supernova is considered for progenitors heavier than 18 M _⊙ . The flux calculations are performed for different combinations of the star formation rate, nuclear equation of state, and neutrino mass hierarchy, to examine the systematic effects from these factors. In any case, our new model predicts the enhanced DSNB ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ flux at E _ν ≳ 30 MeV and E _ν ≲ 10 MeV, due to more frequent BH formation and a larger core-collapse rate at high redshifts in early-type galaxies, respectively. Event rate spectra of the DSNB ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ at a detector from the new model are shown, and the detectability at water-based Cherenkov detectors, Super-Kamiokande with a gadolinium dissolution and Hyper-Kamiokande, is discussed. In order to investigate the impacts of the assumptions in the new model, we prepare alternative models, based on different IMF forms and treatments of BH formation, and estimate the discrimination capabilities between the new and alternative models at these detectors.

Astrophysical neutrinos are excellent probes of astroparticle physics and high-energy physics. With energies far beyond solar, supernovae, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos, high-energy and ultra-high-energy neutrinos probe fundamental physics from the TeV scale to the EeV scale and beyond. They are sensitive to physics both within and beyond the Standard Model through their production mechanisms and in their propagation over cosmological distances. They carry unique information about their extreme non-thermal sources by giving insight into regions that are opaque to electromagnetic radiation. This white paper describes the opportunities astrophysical neutrino observations offer for astrophysics and high-energy physics, today and in coming years. Abstract

The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract

Core collapse of massive stars leads to different fates for various physical factors, which gives different spectra of the emitted neutrinos. We focus on the supernova relic neutrinos (SRNs) as a probe to investigate the stellar collapse fate. We present the SRN fluxes and event rate spectra at a detector for three resultant states after stellar core collapse, the typical mass neutron star, the higher mass neutron star, or the failed supernova forming a black hole, based on different nuclear equations of state. Then possible SRN fluxes are formed as mixtures of the three components. We also show the expected sensitivities at the next-generation water-based Cherenkov detectors, SK-Gd and Hyper-Kamiokande, as constraining the mixture fractions. This study provides a practical example of extracting astrophysical constraints through SRN measurement., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

International audience; We present the results of a search for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB) at Super-Kamiokande (SK) that incorporates $22.5\times2970$~kton.days of data from its fourth data-taking phase. Two analyses, with different energy regimes covering the 9.3$-$81.3~MeV antineutrino energy range, have been developed based on previous SK searches, with substantially improved background modeling and data reduction techniques. Moreover, a combined analysis of nearly 20 years of SK data (1996-2018) has been performed, with a 90\% C.L. sensitivity to the DSNB flux comparable to various DSNB predictions. No significant evidence for a DSNB signal has been observed, and both analyses set world-leading limits on the DSNB flux that can reach about $2.7\overline{\nu}_e$.cm$^{-2}$.s$^{-1}$ for a wide range of models.

Abstract

Precise knowledge of neutrino neutral current elastic interaction on oxygen is important to im- prove the sensitivity in search for supernova relic neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande. While the measurement of the interaction cross section is successfully conducted at the T2K experiment us- ing as signal gamma-rays emitted from excited nuclei, a large systematic error remains since the current model, which is used for the predictions of gamma-ray emission through nuclear reactions following the primary neutrino interaction, is not optimal. To reduce the systematic uncertainty, the measurement of gamma-ray production from neutron-oxygen reactions is carried out using an 80 MeV quasi-mono energetic neutron beam. In the experiment, several gamma-ray peaks from the reactions of oxygen nuclei with fast neutrons are observed. In addition, neutron flux and background measurements are also conducted for the cross section estimation. Using the data, the production cross section of 6.13 MeV gamma-ray, which is important in the T2K measurement, is estimated. Finally, future prospects are also reported.
