Space exploration launch costs on the order of $10K per pound provide ample incentive to seek innovative, cost-effective ways to reduce structural mass without sacrificing safety and reliability. Damage-tolerant structural systems can provide a route to avoiding weight penalty while enhancing vehicle safety and reliability. Self-healing polymers capable of spontaneous puncture repair show great promise to mitigate potentially catastrophic damage from events such as micrometeoroid penetration. Effective self-repair requires these materials to heal instantaneously following projectile penetration while retaining structural integrity. Poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMMA), also known as Surlyn is an ionomer-based copolymer that undergoes puncture reversal (self-healing) following high impact puncture at high velocities. However EMMA is not a structural engineering polymer, and will not meet the demands of aerospace applications requiring self-healing engineering materials. Current efforts to identify candidate self-healing polymer materials for structural engineering systems are reported. Rheology, high speed thermography, and high speed video for self-healing semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers will be reported.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) dynamics are important for understanding adjustments to altered gravity. Previous flight observations document significant facial edema during exposure to microgravity, which suggests that ICP is elevated during microgravity. However, there are no experimental results obtained during space flight, primarily due to the invasiveness of currently available techniques. We have developed and refined a noninvasive technique to measure intracranial pressure noninvasively. The technique is based upon detecting skull movements of a few micrometers in association with altered intracranial pressure. We reported that the PPLL technique has enough sensitivity to detect changes in cranial distance associated with the pulsation of ICP in cadavera. In normal operations, however, we place a transducer on the scalp. Thus, we cannot rule out the possibility that the PPLL technique picks up cutaneous pulsation. The purpose of the present study was therefore to show that the PPLL technique has enough sensitivity to detect changes in cranial distance associated with cardiac cycles in vivo.

It is believed that intracranial pressure (ICP) may be elevated in microgravity because a fluid shift toward the head occurs due to loss of gravitational blood pressures. Elevated ICP may contribute to space adaptation syndrome, because as widely observed in clinical settings, elevated ICP causes headache, nausea, and projectile vomiting, which are similar to symptoms of space adaptation syndrome. However, the hypothesis that ICP is altered in microgravity is difficult to test because of the invasiveness of currently-available techniques. We have developed a new ultrasonic technique, which allows us to record ICP waveforms noninvasively. The present study was designed to understand postural effects on ICP and assess the feasibility of our new device in future flight experiments.

The present study was designed to validate our noninvasive ultrasonic technique (pulse phase locked loop: PPLL) for measuring intracranial pressure (ICP) waveforms. The technique is based upon detecting skull movements which are known to occur in conjunction with altered intracranial pressure. In bench model studies, PPLL output was highly correlated with changes in the distance between a transducer and a reflecting target (R2 = 0.977). In cadaver studies, transcranial distance was measured while pulsations of ICP (amplitudes of zero to 10 mmHg) were generated by rhythmic injections of saline. Frequency analyses (fast Fourier transformation) clearly demonstrate the correspondence between the PPLL output and ICP pulse cycles. Although theoretically there is a slight possibility that changes in the PPLL output are caused by changes in the ultrasonic velocity of brain tissue, the decreased amplitudes of the PPLL output as the external compression of the head was increased indicates that the PPLL output represents substantial skull movement associated with altered ICP. In conclusion, the ultrasound device has sufficient sensitivity to detect transcranial pulsations which occur in association with the cardiac cycle. Our technique makes it possible to analyze ICP waveforms noninvasively and will be helpful for understanding intracranial compliance and cerebrovascular circulation.

Exposure to microgravity causes a cephalad fluid shift which may elevate intracranial pressure (ICP). Elevation in ICP may affect cerebral hemodynamics in astronauts during space flight. ICP is, however, a difficult parameter to measure due to the invasiveness of currently available techniques. We already reported our development of a non-invasive ultrasound device for measurement of ICP. We recently modified the device so that we might reproducibly estimate ICP changes in association with cardiac cycles. In the first experiment, we measured changes in cranial distance with the ultrasound device in cadavera while changing ICP by infusing saline into the lateral ventricle. In the second experiment, we measured changes in cranial distance in five healthy volunteers while placing them in 60 deg, 30 deg head-up tilt, supine, and 10 deg head-down tilt position. In the cadaver study, fast Fourier transformation revealed that cranial pulsation is clearly associated with ICP pulsation. The ratio of cranial distance and ICP pulsation is 1.3microns/mmHg. In the tilting study, the magnitudes of cranial pulsation are linearly correlated to tilt angles (r=0.87). The ultrasound device has sufficient sensitivity to detect cranial pulsation in association with cardiac cycles. By analyzing the magnitude of cranial pulsation, estimates of ICP during space flight are possible.

This study was designed to investigate effects of whole body tilting on intracranial compliance and pressure in six healthy volunteers by using a noninvasive ultrasonic device. Subjects were randomly tilted up or down sequentially at 60 degree, 30 degree head-up, supine, and 15 degree head-down position for one minute at each angle. We measured arterial blood pressure with a finger pressure cuff and changes in intracranial distance with an ultrasonic device. The device measures skull movement on the order of micro-meter. Our ultrasound technique demonstrates that skull movement is highly correlated (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.77) with intracranial pressure variations due to cerebral arterial pulsation. The amplitudes of arterial pressure (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.99 and those of intracranial distance changes (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.87) associated with one cardiac cycle were inversely correlated with the angle of tilt. The ratio of pulsation amplitudes for intracranial distance over arterial pressure also showed a significant increase as the angle of tilt was lowered (p=0.003). Thus, postural changes alter intracranial compliance in healthy volunteers and intracranial volume-buffering capacity is reduced in head-down position.

Optically Stimulated Electron Emission (OSEE) has been used to quantify surface contamination in the aerospace community. As advances are made towards the understanding of OSEE, it is desirable to incorporate technological advances with succeeding generations of instrumentation, so that improvements in the practical application of OSEE may be disseminated among the user community. Several studies undertaken by Yost, Welch, Abedin and others have expanded the knowledge base related to the underlying principles of OSEE. The conclusions of these studies, together with inputs from the user community were the foundation upon which the development of a third generation OSEE instrument was based. This manuscript describes the significant improvements incorporated into a third generation OSEE instrument as well as the elements unique to its design.

Exposure to microgravity elevates blood pressure and flow in the head, which may increase intracranial volume (ICV) and intracranial pressure (ICP). Rhesus monkeys exposed to simulated microgravity in the form of 6 degree head-down tilt (HDT) experience elevated ICP. With humans, twenty-four hours of 6 degree HDT bed rest increases cerebral blood flow velocity relative to pre-HDT upright posture. Humans exposed to acute 6 degree HDT experiments increased ICP, measured with the tympanic membrane displacement (TMD) technique. Other studies suggest that increased ICP in humans and cats causes measurable cranial bone movement across the sagittal suture. Due to the slightly compliant nature of the cranium, elevation of the ICP will increase ICV and transcranial distance. Currently, several non-invasive approaches to monitor ICP are being investigated. Such techniques include TMD and modal analysis of the skull. TMD may not be reliable over a large range of ICP and neither method is capable of measuring the small changes in pressure. Ultrasound, however, may reliably measure small distance changes that accompany ICP fluctuations. The purpose of our study was to develop and evaluate an ultrasound technique to measure transcranial distance changes during HDT.

Exposure to microgravity probably elevates blood pressure and flow in the head which may increase intracranial volume (ICV) and pressure (ICP). Due to the slightly compliant nature of the cranium, any increase of ICP will increase ICV and transcranial distance. We used a noninvasive ultrasound technique to measure transcranial distance (frontal to occipital) during head-down tilt. Seven subjects (ages 26-53) underwent the following tilt angles: 90 deg. upright, 30 deg., 0 deg., -6 deg., -10 deg., -6 deg., 0 deg., 30 deg., and 90 deg. Each angle was maintained for 1 min. Ultrasound wave frequency was collected continuously and transcranial distance was calculated (Delta(x) = x(Delta)f/f, where x is path length and f is frequency of the wave) for each tilt angle. Frequency decreased from 503.687 kHz (90 deg. upright) to 502.619 kHz (-10 deg.). These frequencies translated to an increased transcranial distance of 0.403 mm. Although our data suggest a significant increase in transcranial distance during head-down tilt, this apparent increase may result, in part, from head-down tilt-induced subcutaneous edema or cutaneous blood volume elevation. In three subjects, when the above protocol was repeated with an ace bandage wrapped around the head to minimize such edema, the increased transcranial distance from 90 deg. to -10 deg. was reduced by 0.174 mm. Further development of the technique to quantify bone-to-bone expansion unconfounded by cutaneous fluid is necessary. Therefore, this ultrasound technique may provide measurements of changes in cranial dimensions during microgravity.

Headaches are commonly experienced by astronauts in microgravity and by subjects undergoing head-down tilt (simulated microgravity on Earth). Exposure to microgravity probably elevates blood pressure and flow in the head which may increase intracranial volume (ICV) and pressure (ICP) and in turn cause headache. Due to the slightly compliant nature of the cranial vault and the encasement of brain and its vasculature within this vault, any increase of ICV will increase ICP and slightly distend the cranium. Previous studies document perivascular edema and increased ICP in rhesus monkeys during head-down tilt. Elevated ICP has also been reported in humans during head-down tilt. ICP measurements in healthy humans are rare because of the invasiveness of currently-available measurement techniques. Therefore, we proposed a noninvasive ultrasound technique to assess changes of ICV and JCP. The ultrasound principle is based on compliance of the cranial vault. A 450 kHz ultrasound stimulus is transmitted through the cranium by a transducer every 7.5-10 msec. The ultrasound wave enters the brain tissue, reflects off the opposite side of the cranium and is received by the same transducer. The detected wave is compared for phase quadrature (90 deg.to transmitted wave). Because the electronic circuitry of the device maintains a 90 deg. phase (phi), any alterations in the detected wave caused by an increase of ICV and ICP will be reflected as a change in the wave frequency. Phase shift is directly proportional to path length of the wave, DELTA x, which is expressed as DELTA x = phi lambda/2 pi where lambda is wavelength. Elevated ICV and ICP expand the cranial vault and increase path length of the wave (a measure of intracranial distance). Increased path length equals reduced frequency of the detected wave. Reduced frequency is then related to elevated ICP. This technique has potential uses for ICP studies of astronauts in space and head trauma patients on Earth.

Two methods for processing the digitized waveform data obtained from magnetoacoustic emission measurements on a high-strength steel are investigated. Two different techniques to obtain an asymmetry parameter are presented. It is shown that the variation in this asymmetry parameter from five embrittled samples and one unembrittled steel sample can be related to the impact toughness and is not dependent on the magnetic field strength. This technique is nondestructive and is shown to determine the normalized impact toughness of a high-strength steel to better than 14 percent in the decade of interest. A comparison of a magnetoacoustic emission burst and pickup coil output from an unembrittled steel sample and an embrittled sample is illustrated.

A cleaning procedure and a contamination method developed at NASA Langley to contaminate sample surfaces with a certain thickness of HD-2 grease are demonstrated. Varying levels of contamination are obtained. Optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements were performed using the parallel electric field cell and the Pat scan device for clean and contaminated samples with a known amount of common contaminant. The OSEE response is found to be more sensitive for the clean sample than for the contaminated one. It is concluded that the OSEE measurements obtained using these techniques are sensitive to surface conditions and the contaminant thickness variations. It is also shown that the wavelength of illuminating light can have a profound effect on OSEE current levels.

Results of magnetoacoustic emission (MAE) and magnetoacoustic (MAC) measurements performed with an unembrittled HY-80 steel specimen are presented. The MAE measurements were obtained by applying an ac magnetic field of 20 Hz parallel to the uniaxial stress axis. The effects of tensile stress were shown to monotonically decrease the peak amplitude of the MAE burst, and they were consistent with the predicted trend based on the tensile stress-induced domain alignment. The effects of compressive stress were found to increase the peak amplitude of the MAE burst initially and to eventually decrease as the magnitude of compressive stress increased.

Consideration is given to the effects of grain boundary characteristics on the properties of a magnetoacoustic emission spectra obtained by external ac magnetic field-driven domain wall motions. In studies with HY80 steel samples, it is found that the domain wall-defect interaction enhances as more grain boundary is introduced. The enhancement of the domain wall-defect interaction generates high amplitude magnetoacoustic emission pulses and reduces the rate of magnetoacoustic emission events by limiting domain wall motions.

System measures nonlinearity parameters of materials. Uses static strain generated by acoustic wave propagating in material. Since static strain is effectively "dc" component of waveform distortion, problems associated with phase-cancellation artifacts disappear. Further, sign of nonlinearity parameter obtained by simple inspection of measured signal polarity. These features make this system very amenable to use in field. System expected to become standard for acoustic-radiation-stress measurements for solids and liquids and for characterization of material properties related to strength and residual or applied stresses. Also expected to become standard for transducer calibration.

A novel NDE technique is reported for detecting fiber disruptions in graphite-epoxy composites. The technique involves injecting electric current along the graphite fibers of a composite and measuring the resulting magnetic fields. The disruptions in current paths, which occur in areas of fiber damage, are detectable as perturbations in the magnetic field. The experimental setup, the measurements, and the magnetic images of experimental samples are presented. A resistive model has been developed to be used in the modeling of two-dimensional conductivity patterns in graphite composites. Diagrams of the setup and the circuitry are included.

A technique is described that makes it possible to transmit and receive bulk ultrasonic waves launched from the same surface of a composite sheet by means of transducers mounted on variable angle blocks. A straightforward approach to measure the velocity and attenuation of this wave is presented. A bulk compressional wave of 930,000 cm/sec velocity was launched and received in this manner in an 8-ply unidirectional T-300-5208 epoxy composite. Preliminary results indicate that parameters associated with this wave might be sensitive to accumulated damage in a composite; thus, the technique has a potential for NDE in structures made from composite materials.

A broadband megahertz range electrostatic acoustic transducer for use in a liquid environment is described. A liquid tight enclosure includes a metallic conducting membrane as part of its outside surface and has a means inside the liquid tight enclosure for applying a tension to the membrane and for mounting an electrode such that the flat end of the electrode is aproximately parallel to the membrane. The invention includes structure and a method for ensuring that the membrane and the flat end of the electrode are exactly parallel and a fixed predetermined distance from each other.

Capacitive electrostatic transducer (ESAT) measures absolute displacement amplitudes of ultrasonic waves in liquids, and may be used as calibrator for other transducers or as probe for nondestructive study and characterization of materials. ESAT consists of thin conductive membrane stretched over metallic housing. Ultrasonic waves incident on membrane cause it to vibrate and generate signal proportional to wave amplitude. Entire assembly is sealed for immersion in liquid.

A broadband capacitive electrostatic acoustic transducer (ESAT) has been developed for use in a liquid environment at megahertz frequencies. The ESAT basically consists of a thin conductive membrane stretched over a metallic housing. The membrane functions as the ground plate of a parallel plate capacitor, the other plate being a dc biased electrode recessed approximately 10 microns from the electrically grounded membrane. An ultrasonic wave incident on the membrane varies the membrane-electrode gap spacing and generates an electrical signal proportional to the wave amplitude. The entire assembly is sealed for immersion in a liquid environment. Calibration of the ESAT with incident ultrasonic waves of constant displacement amplitude from 1 to 15 MHz reveals a decrease in signal response with increasing frequency independent of membrane tension. The use of the ESAT as a broadband ultrasonic transducer in liquids with a predictable frequency response is promising.
