Abstract Primordial carbon delivered to the early earth by asteroids and meteorites provided a diverse source of extraterrestrial organics from pre-existing simple organic compounds, complex solar-irradiated macromolecules, and macromolecules from extended hydrothermal processing. Surface regolith collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft from the carbon-rich asteroid 162173 Ryugu present a unique opportunity to untangle the sources and processing history of carbonaceous matter. Here we show carbonaceous grains in Ryugu can be classified into three main populations defined by spectral shape: Highly aromatic (HA), Alkyl-Aromatic (AA), and IOM-like (IL). These carbon populations may be related to primordial chemistry, since C and N isotopic compositions vary between the three groups. Diffuse carbon is occasionally dominated by molecular carbonate preferentially associated with coarse-grained phyllosilicate minerals. Compared to related carbonaceous meteorites, the greater diversity of organic functional chemistry in Ryugu indicate the pristine condition of these asteroid samples.

Abstract Internal radiation exposure from neutron-induced radioisotopes environmentally activated following atomic bombing or nuclear accidents should be considered for a complete picture of pathologic effects on survivors. Acute and localized high dose radiation exposure from hot particles taken into the body must induce cell death and severe damage to tissues, whether they are proliferating or not. However, very little the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this internal radiation pathology has been investigated. Male Wistar rats were internally exposed to 56MnO2 powder by inhalation. Small intestine samples were investigated by histological staining at acute phase (6 h, 3 days and 14 days) and late phase (2, 6 and 8 months) after the exposure. Histological location and chemical properties of the hot particles embedded in small intestinal tissues were analyzed by synchrotron radiation—X-ray fluorescence—X-ray absorption near-edge structure (SR–XRF–XANES). Hot particles located in the intestinal cavity were identified as accumulations of Mn and iron. Pathological changes showed evidence of crypt shortening, massive cell death at the position of stem cell zone, including apoptosis and pyroptosis from 6 h through 8 months in the internal exposed rats.

Abstract Complex organic aerosols in the upper atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan reach the troposphere and surface, where a methane (CH4)‐based hydrological cycle occur. Previous studies have assumed no interactions between organic aerosols and liquid CH4, although the dissolution of low‐molecular‐weight photochemical products in liquid CH4 has been considered. Here we report experimental results of soaking a laboratory analog (so‐called tholin) of Titan's organic aerosols in liquid CH4 at 93–98 K for several hours and then evaporating the liquid, simulating wet–dry cycling on Titan. After wet–dry cycling, residual tholin particles form aggregates through cementation. Solid evaporitic deposits formed by evaporation of interacted liquid contain nitrogen‐bearing aromatics, suggesting selective dissolution of aromatics. Our results suggest that organic aerosols or high‐molecular‐weight compounds adsorbed on them partly dissolve in liquid CH4 on Titan, even during short‐term wetting events, promoting the growth of aerosols to dune particles via aggregation and providing aromatics to evaporites.

Recently, microdolomite grains with a diameter of about 30–150 μm were discovered within seep-related shallow gas hydrate in the eastern margin of the Japan Sea, and the preliminary assumption has been that their formation is mediated by microbially secreted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). To verify this interpretation, the present study investigates the characteristics of minerals and organic matter inside the microdolomite grains. Observation by polarizing microscopy reveals that the microdolomite grains generally consist of combinations of distinct cores and external cements. The cores are mostly dark or cloudy and their abundance does not show clear depth dependence, while the external cements are generally isopachous in the shallow part and polygonal in the deeper portions. To further clarify the characteristics of these cores and external cements, thin-foil sections were prepared from two major types of microdolomite, one with a dark core and polygonal external cement, and one with a cloudy core and isopachous external cement. These thin-foil sections were then analyzed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the dark core, fibriform pores of about 100 nm diameter were observed to be closely related with amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and carboxy groups, likely created by heterogeneous nucleation on microbial EPS surfaces. The polygonal external cement is composed of monocrystalline dolomite, representing slow crystal growth in the deeper part where hydrate formation is less active. On the other hand, the observed cloudy core and the isopachous external cement are, respectively, composed of scattered and accumulated rhombohedral dolomite crystals, presumably resulting from homogeneous nucleation in saline pockets of rapidly growing hydrate and subsequent crystal accumulation on the surface of spherical oil films.

Summary: Radium is refocused from the viewpoint of an environmental pollutant and cancer therapy using alpha particles, where it mainly exists as a hydrated ion. We investigated the radium hydration structure and the dynamics of water molecules by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation. The EXAFS experiment showed that the coordination number and average distance between radium ion and the oxygen atoms in the first hydration shell are 9.2 ± 1.9 and 2.87 ± 0.06 Å, respectively. They are consistent with those obtained from the AIMD simulations, 8.4 and 2.88 Å. The AIMD simulations also revealed that the water molecules in the first hydration shell of radium are less structured and more mobile than those of barium, which is an analogous element of radium. Our results indicate that radium can be more labile than barium in terms of interactions with water.

Abstract A part of the radiocaesium from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident was emitted as glassy, water-resistant caesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs). Here, we isolated and investigated seven CsMPs from marine particulate matter and sediment. From the elemental composition, the 134Cs/137Cs activity ratio, and the 137Cs activity per unit volume results, we inferred that the five CsMPs collected from particulate matter were emitted from Unit 2 of the FDNPP, whereas the two CsMPs collected from marine sediment were possibly emitted from Unit 3, as suggested by (i) the presence of calcium and absence of zinc and (ii) the direction of the atmospheric plume during the radionuclide emission event from Unit 3. The presence of CsMPs can cause overestimation of the solid–water distribution coefficient of Cs in marine sediments and particulate matter and a high apparent radiocaesium concentration factor for marine biota. CsMPs emitted from Unit 2, which were collected from the estuary of a river that flowed through a highly contaminated area, may have been deposited on land and then transported by the river. By contrast, CsMPs emitted from Unit 3 were possibly transported eastward by the wind and deposited directly onto the ocean surface.

Thioesters are often suggested to be key intermediates in primordial metabolism, but prebiotic CO2 fixation routes to thioesters remain elusive. Here, the authors show nickel sulfide, partially reduced to Ni(0) with realistic geoelectric potentials, facilitates thioester (S-methyl thioacetate) formation via CO2-to-CO electroreduction, followed by a CO-methanethiol reaction.

Micro-X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption fine structure (µ-XRF-XAFS) is one of the most powerful tools to identify the distribution and speciation of trace elements in natural samples with µm spatial resolution. However, conventional µ-XRF-XAFS studies applied to rare earth elements (REEs: lanthanide elements + Y in this study) are mainly limited to their L-edges and L lines (except for Y) that are subject to strong interferences from other elements (mainly transition metals). In this study, we extend µ-XRF-XAFS to the higher energy region (HE-µ-XRF-XAFS) by using an incident X-ray microbeam (size: ca. 1 × 1 µm2) between 38 and 54 keV to realize K-edge excitation lanthanide analysis without interferences from other elements at the BL37XU beamline, SPring-8 (Japan). This method enables us to simultaneously analyze (i) REE patterns (from La to Dy), (ii) XAFS spectra, and (iii) µm-scale distribution of each REE in the natural sample. The proposed method also realizes the simultaneous application of µ-XAFS at low (e.g., Fe K-edge) and high (lanthanide K-edges) energy at the same spot without changing the setup of the µ-XRF-XAFS system using the detuning technique.

Abstract Spherical radioactive caesium (Cs)-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were emitted during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March, 2011. The emission source (timing) and formation process of these particles remain unclear. In this study, the isotopic ratios of uranium (235U and 238U) and caesium (133Cs, 134Cs, 135Cs, and 137Cs) isotopes in the five spherical CsMPs (ca. 2 μm in size) sampled at 50 km west of the FDNPP were determined using secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation-ICPMS, respectively. Results showed that the 235U/238U ratios of CsMPs were homogeneous (1.93 ± 0.03, N = 4) and close to those estimated for the fuel cores in units 2 and 3, and that the Cs isotopic ratios of CsMP were identical to those of units 2 and 3. These results indicated that U and Cs in the spherical CsMPs originated exclusively from the fuel melt in the reactors. Based on a thorough review of literatures related to the detailed atmospheric releases of radionuclides, the flow of plumes from the FDNPP reactor units during the accident and the U and Cs isotopic ratio results in this study, we hereby suggest that the spherical CsMPs originate only from the fuel in unit 2 on the night of 14 March to the morning of 15 March. The variation range of the analysed 235U/238U isotopic ratios for the four spherical particles was extremely narrow. Thus, U may have been homogenised in the source through the formation of fuel melt, which ultimately evaporating and taken into CsMPs in the reactor and was released from the unit 2.

After the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in Japan, freshwater ecosystems near the site remained contaminated by radiocesium (RCs). Clarifying RCs concentrations in aquatic insects is crucial because fishes consume these insects that transfer RCs into freshwater ecosystems. As aquatic insects are usually measured for radioactivity in bulk samples of several tens of insects, variation in RCs concentration among individuals is not captured. In this study, we investigated the variability in 137Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (Stenopsyche marmorata) and carnivorous dobsonfly (Protohermes grandis) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity in 4 of the 46 caddisfly larvae, whereas no such outliers were observed in 45 dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMP distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

Ferromanganese minerals are abundant in marine environments but the extent of these minerals in subseafloor sediments remains unknown. Here the authors find abundant ferromanganese microparticles in oxic pelagic clays, accounting for 14–16% of the new estimate of the global manganese budget (9.2–47.4 Tt).

In this study, we compared the high-energy resolution X-ray fluorescence X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) and normal XANES spectra of various iron (Fe) species and Fe in atmospheric aerosol samples to explore the advantages of Fe K-edge HERFD-XANES for Fe speciation in aerosols using the linear combination fitting (LCF) of XANES spectra. We also conducted Fe extraction experiments to validate the LCF-XANES. In the HERFD-XANES spectra, the pre-edge region showed specific structures absent in normal XANES. HERFD-XANES also produced more distinctive shoulders within each spectrum than normal XANES. HERFD-XANES was applied to an aerosol sample (MT21-S2) collected in Tokyo, Japan. Normal XANES identified ferrihydrite, biotite, and montmorillonite, whereas HERFD-XANES clearly detected goethite as a fourth component. Normal XANES did not distinguish between ferrihydrite and goethite in LCF because of their similar structures. A similar trend was observed in the pre-edge region, and the Fe extraction experiment result was consistent with the LCF result in the pre-edge region. Thus, LCF of HERFD-XANES, in particular for the pre-edge region, can be a powerful tool for Fe speciation in aerosols.

Ferrous saponite is a secondary mineral that can be used to reveal the redox state of past aqueous environments on Mars. In mineralogical analyses for ferrous saponite formed in laboratory simulations or contained in future returned samples from Mars, its oxidation by the Earth’s air could be problematic due to the high redox sensitivity. Here, we performed micro X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy analyses for a single particle of synthesized ferrous saponite without any exposure to air. The sample was reanalyzed after air exposure for 10–18 h to assess the adequacy of our anoxic preparation/measurement methods and the impacts of air on the sample. We found that the crystal structures agreed with ferrous saponite, both before and after air exposure; however, ferrous iron in saponite was partially oxidized, at least until 0.1–1 μm from the surface, after air exposure at the submicron scale, forming micro-vein-like Fe(III)-rich features. Together with our results of infrared spectroscopy of ferrous saponite, we showed that oxidation of octahedral iron occurred rapidly and heterogeneously, even in a short time of air exposure without any structural rearrangement. Since ferrous saponite is expected to exist on carbonaceous asteroids and icy dwarf planets, our methodology is also applicable to mineralogical studies of samples returned from these bodies.

Aerosols, including mineral dust, are transported from China and Mongolia to Japan, particularly in spring. It has been recognized that calcium (Ca) carbonate is the main Ca species in aerosols, which reacts with acidic species such as sulfuric and nitric acids at the surface of mineral dust during its long-range transport, related to mitigation of acid depositions. The similar assumption that magnesium (Mg) originally takes the form of carbonate and contributes to the neutralization reaction and buffering effect on the acidity of aerosols has been suggested in various studies. However, few studies have confirmed this process by measuring actual Mg species in aerosols quantitatively. In this study, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was employed to determine Mg species in size-fractionated aerosol samples, including mineral dust. The results showed that (i) most Mg in the mineral dust did not take the form of carbonate and its reacted species (e.g., sulfate and nitrate) produced by the neutralization reaction, but (ii) Mg was mainly found as Mg in the octahedral layer in phyllosilicates. Given that the reactivity of such Mg in phyllosilicates is much lower than those in carbonate minerals, the contribution of Mg to the neutralization reactions in the atmosphere must be lower than previously expected.

Iddingsite in Martian nakhlites contains various secondary minerals that reflect water–rock interaction on Mars. However, the formation processes of secondary Fe minerals in iddingsite are unclear because they include carbonates precipitated under reductive and alkaline conditions and sulfates that are generally precipitated under oxidative and acidic conditions. Mineral types cannot coexist under equilibrium. Herein, we characterize the carbonate phase of meteorite Yamato 000593 as siderite and Mn-bearing siderite via field-emission electron probe microanalyzer (FE-EPMA). Then, we examined the distribution and speciation of trace Cr and S within the carbonates through synchrotron micro-focused X-ray fluorescence-X-ray absorption fine structure and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (μ-XRF-XAFS/STXM) analysis to estimate the transition history of Eh-pH conditions during siderite formation to explain the coexistence of carbonate and sulfate phases in the nakhlite vein. Specifically, the distribution and speciation of S in the mesostasis and carbonate phases and the heterogeneous distribution of Mn-FeCO3 incorporating Cr(III) in the carbonate constrain the Eh-pH condition. The conditions and transition of the fluid chemistry determined herein based on speciation of various elements provide a new constraint on the physicochemical condition of the water that altered the nakhlite body during the Amazonian epoch.

Another protocol to make sulfur embedded ultrathin sections was developed for STXM–XANES, AFM–IR and TEM analyses of organic materials in small extraterrestrial samples. Polymerized liquid sulfur—instead of low-viscosity liquid sulfur—is the embedding media in this protocol. Due to high viscosity of the polymerized sulfur, the embedded samples stay near the surface of polymerized liquid sulfur, which facilitates trimming of glassy sulfur and ultramicrotomy of tiny embedded samples. In addition, well-continued ribbons of ultramicrotomed sections can be obtained, which are suitable for the above mentioned analyses. Because there is no remarkable difference in Carbon XANES spectra of Murchison IOM prepared by this protocol and by the conventional protocol, this protocol gives another alternative to prepare sulfur embedded ultramicrotomed sections.

Internal radiation exposure from neutron-induced radioisotopes environmentally activated following atomic bombing or nuclear accidents should be considered for a complete picture of pathologic effects on survivors. Inhaled hot particles expose neighboring tissues to locally ultra-high doses of β-rays and can cause pathologic damage. 55MnO2 powder was activated by a nuclear reactor to make 56MnO2 which emits β-rays. Internal exposures were compared with external γ-rays. Male Wistar rats were administered activated powder by inhalation. Lung samples were observed by histological staining at six hours, three days, 14 days, two months, six months and eight months after the exposure. Synchrotron radiation—X-ray fluorescence—X-ray absorption near-edge structure (SR–XRF–XANES) was utilized for the chemical analysis of the activated 56Mn embedded in lung tissues. 56Mn beta energy spectrum around the particles was calculated to assess the local dose rate and accumulated dose. Hot particles located in the bronchiole and in damaged alveolar tissue were identified as accumulations of Mn and iron. Histological changes showed evidence of emphysema, hemorrhage and severe inflammation from six hours through eight months. Apoptosis was observed in the bronchiole epithelium. Our study shows early event damage from the locally ultra-high internal dose leads to pathogenesis. The trigger of emphysema and hemorrhage was likely early event damage to blood vessels integral to alveolar walls.

Monohydrocalcite (MHC) is a metastable hydrous calcium carbonate that requires Mg in the mother solution during formation in the laboratory. MHC prepared by previously reported methods always contains a large amount of Mg (Mg/Ca ratio up to 0.4) because of the simultaneous formation of amorphous Mg carbonate during synthesis, which has hindered detailed elucidation of the mineralogical characteristics of MHC. Here, we synthesized MHC at low temperature (5 °C) and found that it contained little Mg (Mg/Ca ratio < 0.01). X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis of synthesized MHC revealed that the Mg present was structurally incorporated within the MHC, and that the chemical speciation of this Mg was similar to that of Mg in aragonite. Thus, low-temperature synthesis is an effective means of producing MHC without also producing amorphous Mg carbonate.

Biomass burning is an important source of soluble Fe transported to the open ocean; however, its exact contribution remains unclear. Iron isotope ratios can be used as a tracer because Fe emitted by combustion can yield very low Fe isotope ratios due to isotope fractionation during evaporation processes. However, data on Fe isotope ratios of aerosol particles emitted during biomass burning are lacking. We collected size-fractionated aerosol samples before, during, and after a biomass burning event and compared their Fe isotope ratios. On the basis of the concentrations of several elements and Fe species, Fe emitted during the event mainly comprised suspended soil particles in all the size fractions. Iron isotope ratios of fine particles before and after the event were low due to the influence of other anthropogenic combustion sources, but they were closer to the crustal value during the event because of the influence of Fe from suspended soil. Although Fe isotope ratios of soluble Fe were also measured to reduce Fe from soil components, we did not find low isotope signals. Results suggested that Fe isotope ratios could not identify Fe emitted by biomass burning, and low Fe isotope ratios are found only when the combustion temperature is high enough for a sufficient amount of Fe to evaporate.

Rivers and ponds near the Erdenet mine, one of the world’s largest copper-molybdenum mines, exhibit high concentrations of molybdenum (Mo). This study evaluates the distribution and chemical speciation of Mo in surface sediments from ponds and rivers in Erdenet city to elucidate the mobility and solubility of Mo in the surface aquatic environments in the area. The waters and sediments were collected in two shallow ponds connected to the tailing pond and from three rivers flowing through Erdenet city. The distribution and chemical speciation of Mo in the sediments were examined using five-step sequential extraction and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analyses. The XAFS spectra of the sediments showed that large amounts of Mo in the sediments are molybdate or polymeric molybdate, weakly adsorbed onto ferrihydrite. Sequential extraction consistently showed a large amount of Mo distributed in the labile fractions. Results suggest that the surface sediments from ponds and rivers play a role as secondary contamination sources of Mo rather than as sinks of Mo in the area.

Recycling rare earth elements (REEs) used in advanced materials such as Nd magnets is important for the efficient use of REE resources when the supply of several REEs is limited. In this work, the feasibility of using salmon milt for REE recovery and separation was examined, along with the identification of the binding site of REEs in salmon milt. Results showed that (i) salmon milt has a sufficiently high affinity to adsorb REEs and (ii) the adsorption capacity of the milt is 1.04 mEq/g, which is comparable with that of commercial cation exchange resin. Heavier REEs have higher affinity for milt. A comparison of stability constants and adsorption patterns of REEs discussed in the literature suggests that the phosphate is responsible for the adsorption of REE in milt. The results were supported by dysprosium (Dy) and lutetium (Lu) LIII-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The REE-P shell was identified for the second neighboring atom, which shows the importance of the phosphate site as REE binding sites. The comparison of REE adsorption pattern and EXAFS results between the milt system and other adsorbent systems (cellulose phosphate, Ln-resin, bacteria, and DNA-filter hybrid) revealed that the coordination number of phosphate is correlated with the slope of the REE pattern. The separation column loaded with milt was tested to separate REE for the practical use of salmon milt for the recovery and separation of REE. However, water did not flow through the column possibly because of the hydrophobicity of the milt. Thus, sequential adsorption-desorption approach using a batch-type method was applied for the separation of REE. As an example of the practical applications of REE separation, Nd and Fe(III) were successfully separated from a synthetic solution of Nd magnet waste by a batch-type method using salmon milt.

Surface soils, under various land uses, were contaminated by radionuclides that were released by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Because paddy fields are one of the main land uses in Japan, we investigated the spatial distribution of radiocesium and the influence of irrigation water in a paddy field during cultivation. Soil core samples collected at a paddy field in Fukushima showed that plowing had disturbed the original depth distribution of radiocesium. The horizontal distribution of radiocesium did not show any evidence for significant influence of radiocesium from irrigation water, and its accumulation within the paddy field, since the original amount of radiocesium was much larger than was added into the paddy field by irrigation water. However, it is possible that rainfall significantly increases the loading of radiocesium.

An increasing amount of evidence suggests that early ocean hydrothermal systems were sustained sources of ammonia, an essential nitrogen species for prebiotic synthesis of life’s building blocks. However, it remains a riddle how the abiotically generated ammonia was retained at the vent–ocean interface for the subsequent chemical evolution. Here, we demonstrate that, under simulated geoelectrochemical conditions in early ocean hydrothermal systems (≤ − 0.6 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode), mackinawite gradually reduces to zero-valent iron (Fe0), generating interlayer Fe0 sites. This reductive conversion leads to an up to 55-fold increase in the solid/liquid partition coefficient for ammonia, enabling over 90% adsorption of 1 mM ammonia in 1 M NaCl at neutral pH. A coordinative binding of ammonia on the interlayer Fe0 sites was computed to be the major mechanism of selective ammonia adsorption. Mackinawite is a ubiquitous sulfide precipitate in submarine hydrothermal systems. Given its reported catalytic function in amination, the extreme accumulation of ammonia on electroreduced mackinawite should have been a crucial initial step for prebiotic nitrogen assimilation, paving the way to the origin of life.
