Rapid analysis of multiple food allergens is required to confirm the appropriateness of food allergen labelling in processed foods. This study aimed to develop a rapid and reliable method to simultaneously detect trace amounts of seven food allergenic proteins (wheat, buckwheat, milk, egg, crustacean, peanut, and walnut) in processed foods using LC-MS/MS. Suspension-trapping (S-Trap) columns and on-line automated solid-phase extraction were used to improve the complex and time-consuming pretreatment process previously required for allergen analysis using LC-MS/MS. The developed method enabled the simultaneous detection of selected marker peptides for specific proteins derived from seven food ingredients in five types of incurred samples amended with trace amounts of allergenic proteins. Background/purpose: The incidence of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is increasing worldwide, mostly due to the use of antiresorptive agents (ARAs) such as bisphosphonate (BP) and denosumab (Dmab). However, the proportion of BP-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) and Dmab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) among all ARA-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) cases is not clear; this hinders appropriate treatment, recurrence-prevention planning, and avoidance of unnecessary Dmab withdrawal. Moreover, the causative drug administered at each disease stage remains unknown. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study of patients with ARONJ who visited oral and maxillofacial surgery departments at hospitals in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, over 3 years to classify and compare patient characteristics with those having BRONJ and DRONJ. We sought to identify the proportion of DRONJ in ARONJ. Materials and methods: After excluding stage 0 patients, 1021 patients were included (471 high-dose; 560 low-dose). ARA treatment for bone metastases of malignant tumors and multiple myeloma was considered high dose, while that for cancer treatment-induced bone loss and osteoporosis was low dose. Results: Low doses of BP and Dmab accounted for >50% patients; the results differed from those in other countries. DRONJ accounted for 58% and 35% of high-dose and low-dose cases, respectively. Stage 3 ARONJ cases comprised 92 (19.5%) low-dose BRONJ, 39 (20.1%) high-dose BRONJ, 24 (30%) low-dose DRONJ, and 68 (24.5%) high-dose DRONJ. Eighty-nine patients who received switch therapy were divided into BRONJ or DRONJ, but there was no difference in the ratio of each stage compared to the non-switch therapy. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to clarify the proportion of BRONJ and DRONJ cases, causative drug, and its doses by disease stages. DRONJ accounted for approximately 30% of the ARONJ, approximately 60% of which was due to high doses.

Cesium (Cs) is an alkali metal with radioactive isotopes such as 137Cs and 134Cs. 137Cs, a product of uranium fission, has garnered attention as a radioactive contaminant. Radioactive contamination remediation using microorganisms has been the focus of numerous studies. We investigated the mechanism underlying Cs+ resistance in Microbacterium sp. TS-1 and other representative microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis. The addition of Mg2+ effectively improved the Cs+ resistance of these microorganisms. When exposed to high concentrations of Cs+, the ribosomes of Cs+-sensitive mutants of TS-1 collapsed. Growth inhibition of B. subtilis in a high-concentration Cs+ environment was because of a drastic decrease in the intracellular potassium ion concentration and not the destabilization of the ribosomal complex. This is the first study demonstrating that the toxic effect of Cs+ on bacterial cells differs based on the presence of a Cs+ efflux mechanism. These results will aid in utilizing high-concentration Cs+-resistant microorganisms for radioactive contamination remediation in the future.

Cesium ion (Cs+) resistance has been reported in bacteria but is poorly understood as reports on Cs+-resistant bacteria have been limited. We previously reported a novel Cs+/H+ antiporter CshA implicated in Cs+-resistance in Microbacterium sp. TS-1. The present study used the same screening method to isolate novel Cs+-sensitive mutants and their revertants from TS-1. A comparative mutation site analysis using whole-genome sequencing revealed that MTS1_03028 encodes the Mg2+ transporter MgtE and is a candidate Cs+ resistance-related gene. We performed a bioinformatic analysis of MTS1_03028 and complementation experiments on Cs+ resistance in the TS-1 MTS1_03028 mutants Mut5 and Mut7 as well as Escherichia coli expressing MTS1_03028 in the presence of Mg2+. We established the role of MgtE in Cs+ resistance through a functional analysis of TS-1. Enhancing Mg2+ transport by expression of MTS_03028 conferred increased Cs+ resistance. When this strain was exposed to Cs+ concentrations exceeding 200 mM, CshA consistently lowered the intracellular Cs+ concentration. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to clarify the mechanism of Cs+ resistance in certain bacteria. The study findings offer important insights into the mechanism of bacterial resistance to excess Cs+ in the environment, suggesting the potential for bioremediation in high Cs-contaminated areas.

This study aimed to assess the accuracy of a method of predicting post-movement root position during orthodontic treatment using a 3D digital crown/root model (3DCRM) created with pre-movement records of both cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and dental arch digital scans. Pre- and post-movement CBCT scans and dental arch digital scans of five patients who had completed orthodontic treatments were used in this study. The 3DCRM was superimposed onto the post-movement scanned dental arch to identify the post-movement root position (test method). Post-movement CBCT (referenced as the current method) served as the control to identify the actual post-movement root position. 3D-coordinate analysis revealed no significant differences between the test and current methods along the X and Y axes. However, the discrepancy on the Z axis (especially in cases of intrusion) was greater than that in all other directions for all three tooth types examined (p < 0.05). A strong positive correlation between the degree of discrepancy and the distance of tooth movement was observed on the Z axis (r = 0.71). The 3DCRM method showed promising potential to accurately predict root position during orthodontic treatments without the need for a second CBCT. However, root resorption, which affected the Z axis prediction, needs to be closely monitored using periapical radiographs to complement this method.

Rising prices are currently a problem in the world. In particular, the abnormal increases in the price of metals, which are often used in dental prosthetics, have increased the burden of dental costs on the public. There is therefore an urgent need to develop prosthetic devices made from materials that are not affected by the global situation and that have excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties comparable to those of metals. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a promising alternative to metal in dentistry. This study compared the effects of different molding orientations, highly accelerated aging, and water absorption on the flexural strength of PEEK fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) and examined its potential for dental applications. The flexural strength of PEEK stacked at 0° to the molding stage (0° PF), with and without highly accelerated aging, was significantly greater than for the other molding orientations. As with PD, the maximum test load for 0° PF was measured without fracture. PEEK stacked at 45° (45° PF) and 90° (90° PF) to the molding stage easily fractured, as the applied load pulled the stacked layers. No statistically significant difference was found between the flexural strength of 45° PF and 90° PF. The flexural strength decreased under all conditions due to defects in the crystal structure of PEEK caused by highly accelerated aging.

The radionuclide isotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) of Cesium (Cs), an alkali metal, are attracting attention as major causes of radioactive contamination. Although Cs+ is harmful to the growth of plants and bacteria, alkaliphilic bacterium Microbacterium sp. TS-1, isolated from a jumping spider, showed growth even in the presence of 1.2 M CsCl. The maximum concentration of Cs+ that microorganisms can withstand has been reported to be 700 mM till date, suggesting that the strain TS-1 is resistant to a high concentration of Cs ions. Multiple reports of cesium ion-resistant bacteria have been reported, but the detailed mechanism has not yet been elucidated. We obtained Cs ion-sensitive mutants and their revertant mutants from strain TS-1 and identified a Cs ion resistance-related gene, MTS1_00475, by performing SNP analysis of the whole-genome sequence data. When exposed to more than 200 mM Cs+ concentration, the intracellular Cs+ concentration was constantly lowered by MTS1_00475, which encodes the novel low-affinity Cs+/H+ antiporter. This study is the first to clarify the mechanism of cesium resistance in unexplained cesium-resistant microorganisms. By clarifying the new cesium resistance mechanism, it can be expected to be used as a bioremediation tool for treating radioactive Cs+ contaminated water.

Objectives. Although digital technology has been widely integrated into dental education, there is limited literature investigating the extent of the integration of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) for removable systems in the dental curriculum. The purpose of this study was to assess the current implementation of CAD-CAM complete and partial dentures in predoctoral (PP) and advanced graduate prosthodontic (AGP) education in US dental schools. The study also aimed to identify potential barriers to its implementation in the dental curriculum. Methods. An online survey with 15 questions was created using online survey software. The survey was distributed to the directors of predoctoral prosthodontics in 56 schools and advanced graduate programs of prosthodontics in 52 schools listed in the 2018–19 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Directory. Results. The percentage of programs (PP and AGP) implementing CAD-CAM complete dentures (CAD-CAM CDs) and CAD-CAM removable partial dentures (CAD-CAM RPDs) in their didactic, preclinical, and clinical curricula was recorded. CAD-CAM CDs are taught in didactic courses in 54.2% of PP and 65.2% of AGP. However, CAD-CAM RPDs are only taught in 37.5% of PP and 47.8% of AGP. Programs are largely limited by a lack of funds, resources, time, and faculty members. Conclusion. While digital technologies have indeed become more prevalent in dental education, many institutions face barriers to implementation. More research must be conducted in order to support the continued incorporation of digital technologies into dental education.

Objectives: Magnets have many advantages in orthodontics, and our previous studies confirmed their therapeutic potential through 3D-data analysis. The aim of this study was to compare tooth movements, including rotation, obtained via magnetic and elastic forces in crowded cases in vitro. Methods: Typodont models mimicking a crowded case were prepared. In the magnetic force-driven orthodontics (MG) group, Nd-Fe-B magnets were attached to the labial surfaces from UR4 to UL4 for attracting force, and to UR6 and UL6 for repulsing force. For the elastic force-driven orthodontic (EL) group, brackets were placed on labial surfaces from UR2 to UL2 with power-chain elastics. A NiTi archwire was used in both groups. The models were 3D scanned before and after tooth movement and exported as STL files. The pre- and post-movement STL files were superimposed. The 3D coordinates of the measurement points of the crown and root apex were obtained, and tooth displacement, 3D movements (X, Y, and Z-axis), and rotation (yaw, pitch, and roll) were calculated. Two-tailed Student's t-test was performed for comparison of the results between MG and EL groups (n = 3). Results: Overall, both groups indicated similar movement and rotation to achieve the planned arch form. In the crown movement and rotation, no significant differences were observed between MG and EL groups. However, in the root movement, there was a significant difference between MG and EL groups in X and Z axis for the canines. Conclusions: Magnetic force-driven orthodontics demonstrated comparable results to elastics with less tipping movement, suggesting a potential future orthodontic modality. Clinical significance: This in vitro study showed the potential of magnetic force for orthodontic application. The magnetic force-driven orthodontics might provide less tipping tooth movement compared to conventional methods, such as power chains, and could be a future technique for comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

The accurate diagnosis of individual tooth prognosis has to be determined comprehensively in consideration of the broader treatment plan. The objective of this study was to establish an effective artificial intelligence (AI)-based module for an accurate tooth prognosis decision based on the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) comprehensive treatment planning curriculum (CTPC). The tooth prognosis of 2359 teeth from 94 cases was evaluated with 1 to 5 levels (1—Hopeless, 5—Good condition for long term) by two groups (Model-A with 16, and Model-B with 13 examiners) based on 17 clinical determining factors selected from the HSDM-CTPC. Three AI machine-learning methods including gradient boosting classifier, decision tree classifier, and random forest classifier were used to create an algorithm. These three methods were evaluated against the gold standard data determined by consensus of three experienced prosthodontists, and their accuracy was analyzed. The decision tree classifier indicated the highest accuracy at 0.8413 (Model-A) and 0.7523 (Model-B). Accuracy with the gradient boosting classifier and the random forest classifier was 0.6896, 0.6687, and 0.8413, 0.7523, respectively. Overall, the decision tree classifier had the best accuracy among the three methods. The study contributes to the implementation of AI in the decision-making process of tooth prognosis in consideration of the treatment plan.

(1) Background: The tongue plays a key role in the stomatognathic system in carrying out oral functions. The aim of this study was to identify the association between tongue pressure and orthodontic parameters. (2) Methods: This study is a cross-sectional multicentered cohort study with IRB approval. During routine orthodontic initial examinations, the following data were recorded: age, sex, angle classification, overjet (OJ), overbite (OB), arch sizes, tongue width, and maximum tongue pressure (MTP). The association between MTP and orthodontic parameters was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation analysis and the Student’s t-test. (3) Results: There is a positive correlation between MTP and age between ages 10 and 20 (R = 0.47, p < 0.01). There is a negative correlation with MTP and age between 20 and 40 (R = −0.30, p < 0.05). There are negative correlations between MTP and OJ (R = −0.278, p < 0.01)) and OB (R = −0.374, p < 0.01). While there is no statistical significance between MTP and tongue width, there is a statistically significant difference between age and tongue width (R = 0.22482, p < 0.05). There is no statistical significance between MTP and sex, angle classification, arch length, intercanine width, and intermolar width. (4) Conclusion: An earlier decline in MTP is observed with patients with malocclusion. This implies that patients with malocclusion should seek early treatment for the malocclusion.

With the introduction of rare earth magnets like neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB), it has become possible to produce small magnets with high forces, necessary for its usage in the field of dentistry, such as for orthodontic tooth movement. The ultimate goal of this project is to establish magnetic force-driven orthodontic treatment as a future treatment modality for comprehensive orthodontic treatment.In order to utilize magnets for orthodontic treatment, we must first understand the characteristics of tooth movement created by magnetic forces. In this study, we aimed to digitally assess the efficacy of magnetic attraction and repulsion forces by means of a 3D digital analysis of movement (distance, direction, angulation and duration) and rotation (yaw, pitch and roll) of the crown and root of teeth in an ex vivo typodont model. We performed space closure and space gain treatment of maxillary central incisors (n = 30) and analyzed the movement and rotation of the teeth and root apex with 3D digital analysis. The results of the typodont model indicated significant differences on amount, speed and rotation of tooth and root movement created by magnetic attraction and repulsion forces.We also mimicked a moderate crowding typodont case and successfully treated it with a combination of attraction and repulsion magnetic forces. The moderate crowding case utilized magnets and a titanium archwire to guide the planned tooth movements and prevent undesired or unexpected movement. Further ex vivo experiments and considerations for biosafety will be necessary to investigate magnet force-driven orthodontics as a future modality of orthodontic treatment.

A three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of the mandibular bone was created from 3D X-ray CT scan images of a live human subject. Simulating the clinical situation of implant therapy at the mandibular first molar, virtual extraction of the tooth was performed at the 3D FE mandibular model, and 12 different implant diameters and lengths were virtually inserted in order to carry out a mechanical analysis. (1) High stress concentration was found at the surfaces of the buccal and lingual peri-implant bone adjacent to the sides of the neck in all the implants. (2) The greatest stress value was approximately 6.0 MPa with implant diameter of 3.8 mm, approx. 4.5 MPa with implant diameter of 4.3 mm, and approx. 3.2 MPa with implant diameter of 6.0 mm. (3) The stress on the peri-implant bone was found to decrease with increasing length and mainly in diameter of the implant.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the polymerization shrinkage of short fiber reinforced composite (SFRC) using a multicolor confocal displacement laser that can measure the polymerization shrinkage with high accuracy. The three types of SFRCs used in this study were XD (Ever X Flow Dentin), XB (Ever X Flow Bulk), and XP (EverX Posterior). In addition, CF (Clearfil majesty ES Flow) with hybrid type filler was used as a control. The measured values of the final polymerization shrinkage rate and amount of polymerization shrinkage rate when the polymerization shrinkage rate became constant (less than 0.1 µm/s) were approximated for all SFRCs. XP had a large aspect ratio of glass fiber filler and showed a significant difference from XD with a small aspect ratio (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the measured value of time when the polymerization contraction reached a constant speed (0.1 µm/s or less) for all SFRCs (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the measured values of polymerization shrinkage rate after the polymerization shrinkage reached a constant rate for all SFRCs (p > 0.05). These results show that glass fiber with large aspect ratio can alleviate polymerization shrinkage stress. The polymerization behavior of SFRC was found to be dependent on the amount of glass fiber filler, aspect ratio, and orientation.

Selecting shades of acrylic gingival restorative material is challenging. This study examined the shade appropriateness of five acrylic gingival restorative materials. The color was analyzed using an intraoral spectrophotometer (Crystaleye®, Olympus). The gingival color of maxillary incisors for eighty-nine patients was measured. CIELAB color coordinates (L*, a* and b*) were obtained, and the color difference ∆E (Coverage Error: CE) between shade tabs and natural gingival color of patient samples for each shade guide system were compared. Repeated ANOVA and post hoc analyses with Tukey′s HSD were performed. There was a significant difference among the mean minimum CEs of the tab sets (p < 0.01). GC Acrylic (CE = 5.89 ∆E ± 2.97) and Lucitone 199® (CE = 6.55 ± 3.33) groups exhibited CEs significantly lower than all other groups (all p < 0.001). The IvoCap® system exhibited the highest CE (10.78 ± 3.80), significantly greater than all other groups (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed based on sex (p = 0.055) or ethnicity (p = 0.327). The GC Acrylic and Lucitone 199® shade guides showed the lowest CEs. All guides had coverage errors above 5.89 ∆E, which is larger than ∆E thresholds of acceptability. Of the materials evaluated in this study, GC Acrylic and Lucitione 199® are best able to reproduce the clinical appearance of the gingival tissue. Many patients have tissue that cannot be reproduced accurately with currently available materials.

Objective: This study investigates the reliability of different flexural tests such as three-point-bending, four-point bending, and biaxial tests, in strengthening the dental pressed ceramics (DPCs) frequently used in clinical applications. Methods: The correlations between the three types of bending tests for DPCs were investigated. Plate-shaped specimens for the three-point and four-point bending tests and a disc-shaped specimen for the biaxial bending test were prepared. Each bending test was conducted using a universal testing machine. Results: The results for six DPCs showed that the flexural strength in descending order were the three-point flexural strength, biaxial flexural strength, and four-point flexural strength, respectively. Then, a regression analysis showed a strong correlation between each of the three test methods, with the combination of four-point and biaxial flexural strength showing the highest values. The biaxial flexural strength was not significantly different in the Weibull coefficient (m) compared to the other tests, with the narrowest range considering the 95% interval. The biaxial bending test was found to be suitable for materials with small plastic deformation from the yield point to the breaking point, such as DPCs.

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is being developed for dental applications. This study aimed to investigate the properties of Ti-6Al-4V and pure titanium specimens fabricated using the SLS process and compare them with casting specimens. Besides, the effect of the building direction on the properties of the SLS specimens was also investigated. Specimens were prepared by SLS using Ti-6Al-4V powder or pure titanium powder. Casting specimens were also prepared using Ti-6Al-4V alloys and pure titanium. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation), physical properties (surface roughness, contact angle, and Vickers hardness); corrosion resistors (color difference and corrosion), and surface properties (chemical composition and surface observation) were examined. Both Ti-6Al-4V and pure titanium specimens produced using the SLS process had comparable or superior properties compared with casting specimens. In comparing the building directions, specimens fabricated horizontally to the printing platform showed the greatest tensile strength, and the surface roughness scanned in the horizontal direction to the platform showed the smallest. However, there was no significant effect on other properties. Thus, the SLS process with Ti-6Al-4V powder and pure titanium powder has great performance for the fabrication of dental prosthesis, and there is a possibility for it to take the place of conventional methods.

Consumer 3D printers have improved considerably due to the evolution of additive manufacturing. This study aimed to examine the accuracy of consumer printers in dental restoration. Cylindrical patterns mimicking a full crown were created and enlarged from 100% to 105% of the original size. Two types of consumer 3D printers, including a fused deposition modeling (FDM) device and a stereolithography (SLA) device, and two types of dental 3D printers, including a multi-jet device and an SLA device, were used to fabricate the patterns. Then, the outer and inner diameters and depths, and surface roughness of the patterns were measured. The changing rates of the outer diameter of models created using dental printers were significantly smaller than those of the models created using consumer printers (p < 0.05). Significantly greater surface roughness was obtained in the tooth axis of the model fabricated using the consumer FDM device (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed on the surface roughness of both axes between the consumer SLA device and the dental devices (p > 0.05). However, FDM showed larger surface roughness than dental devices in both axes (p < 0.05). Thus, the SLA consumer printer can be applied to fabricate resin patterns with enlargement editing of 1–3% along the horizontal axis.

The goal of our study is to launch magnetic force-driven orthodontics. This continuous study investigated the influence of magnet position on tipping and bodily tooth movement, using 3D printing technology and digital analysis. Orthodontic typodont models (TMs) for space-closure were 3D printed to mimic maxillary central incisors. Nd-Fe-B magnets were placed in the middle third (Model-M), and the cervical third (Model-C), of the tooth. TMs, before and after movement, were digitally scanned and superimposed. The 3D digital coordinates (X, Y, and Z axes), and rotations (yaw, pitch, and roll) of the tooth crown and root, were calculated and compared between the two magnet position settings. Model-M showed higher rates of movement, but more rotation than Model-C (p < 0.01). The root apex of Model-M moved in the opposite direction of the crown (R = −0.29), indicating tipping movement. In contrast, the crown and root apex moved in the same direction (R = 0.56) in Model-C, indicating bodily movement. These patterns were confirmed in a typodont model of a moderate crowding case. The results validated that modifying the magnet position increased the amount of bodily tooth movement, and decreased rotation/tipping in an ex vivo setting.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-temperature degradation (LTD) on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia. In addition, the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured were compared with those before aging under similar experimental conditions. This study prepared stereolithography apparatus fabricated zirconia specimens with flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness. The specimen position data were set as parallel (0°), diagonal (45°), and perpendicular (90°) to the direction of the building. The LTD condition was 5 h under 134°C and 0.2 MPa in an autoclave. It was found that the 0° direction differed significantly from all other conditions before and after aging, and the highest flexural strength was obtained when the additive specimen was manufactured perpendicular to the building direction. However, the results indicate that there is a negligible effect of aging on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study investigates the mechanical and surface properties of zirconia manufactured using additive manufacturing (AM) technology and the effect of the building direction on the mechanical and surface properties. Methods: Specimens were prepared using ZrO2 paste (3DMix ZrO2; 3DCeram) and a three-dimensional printing system (CeraMaker 900; 3DCeram) based on the principles of stereolithography (SLA). The mechanical properties (flexural strength, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio) and surface properties (chemical composition and surface observation) were evaluated for three building directions (parallel, diagonal, and perpendicular) to investigate the relationship between the building directions and the anisotropy of the mechanical and surface properties of SLA-manufactured zirconia. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honestly significant difference test. Results: The highest flexural strength was obtained for a perpendicular building direction. The flexural strength was significantly higher in the perpendicular direction than in the parallel and diagonal directions; it was also significantly higher in the diagonal direction than in the parallel direction (P<0.05). The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and chemical composition did not differ significantly. Microstructural observations revealed that the layers, large crystals, and pores were more prominent in the parallel direction. Conclusions: The flexural strength and surface structure of the tested SLA-manufactured zirconia were influenced by the building direction; however, other mechanical properties remained unaffected. The layer boundaries affected the anisotropic behavior of the builds to a certain extent, owing to the layer-by-layer production method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TS-1 and other representative microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis. The addition of Mg2+ effectively improved the Cs+ resistance of these microorganisms. When exposed to high concentrations of Cs+, the ribosomes of Cs+-sensitive mutants of TS-1 collapsed. Growth inhibition of B. subtilis in a high-concentration Cs+ environment was because of a drastic decrease in the intracellular potassium ion concentration and not the destabilization of the ribosomal complex. This is the first study demonstrating that the toxic effect of Cs+ on bacterial cells differs based on the presence of a Cs+ efflux mechanism. Crown restorations in anterior region are recommended highly color-reproductivity because of aesthetic reason. Composite resin block with several shade gradations is especially produced for anterior restorations. To clarify the durability of an aesthetic, the effect of toothbrush abrasion on surface properties was performed. Composite-resin blocks without shade gradation and a ceramic block were used as controls. All specimens were prepared using #2000 SiC paper and polished using an aluminum oxide polishing paste. Toothbrush abrasion tests were carried out for 20,000 cycles at a frequency of 2 Hz with 2.0 N load. Gloss and surface roughness were measured before and after toothbrush abrasion. The number of repetitions was set to five. It was clarified that tooth brushing caused to decrease in the gloss and to increase in the surface roughness with significant negative correlations between these results not only in composite-resin blocks without shade gradation but also in those with gradation.
