Abstract Cinema, a modern titan of entertainment, holds power to move people with the artful manipulation of auditory and visual stimuli. Despite this, the mechanisms behind how sensory stimuli elicit emotional responses are unknown. Thus, this study evaluated which brain regions were involved when sensory stimuli evoke auditory- or visual-driven emotions during film viewing. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) decoding techniques, we found that brain activities in the auditory area and insula represent the stimuli that evoke emotional response. The observation of brain activities in these regions could provide further insights to these mechanisms for the improvement of film-making, as well as the development of novel neural techniques in neuroscience. In near feature, such a “neuro-designed” products/ applications might gain in popularity.

Abstract Wildlife observation is a popular activity, and sightings of rare or difficult‐to‐find animals are often highly desired. However, predicting the sighting probabilities of these animals is a challenge for many observers, and it may only be possible by limited experts with intimate knowledge and skills. To tackle this difficulty, we developed user‐friendly forecast systems of the daily observation probabilities of a rare Arctic seabird (Ross's Gull Rhodostethia rosea) in a coastal area in northern Japan. Using a dataset gathered during 16 successive winters, we applied a machine learning technique of self‐organizing maps and explored how days with gull sightings were related to the meteorological pressure patterns over the Sea of Okhotsk (Method A). We also built a regression model that explains the relationship between gull sightings and local‐scale environmental factors (Method B). We then applied these methods with the operational global numerical weather prediction model (a computer simulation application about the fluid dynamics of Earth's atmosphere) to forecast the daily observation probabilities of our target. Method A demonstrated a strong dependence of gull sightings on the 16 representative weather patterns and forecasted stepwise observation probabilities ranging from 0% to 85.7%. Method B also showed that the strength of the northerly wind and the advancement of the season explained gull sightings and forecasted continuous observation probabilities ranging from 0% to 95.5%. Applying these two methods with the operational global numerical weather prediction model successfully forecasted the varied observation probabilities of Ross's Gull from 1 to 5 days ahead from November to February. A 2‐year follow‐up observation also validated both forecast systems to be effective for successful observation, especially when both systems forecasted higher observation probabilities. The developed forecast systems would therefore allow cost‐effective animal observation and may facilitate a better experience for a variety of wildlife observers.

Abstract In this study, we describe a measurement system aiming to skill analysis of wall painting work using a roller brush. Our proposed measurement system mainly comprises an RGB-D sensor and a roller brush with sensors attached. To achieve our requirements in understanding roller operation, we developed an algorithm that is suitable to estimate the roller part pose with high accuracy. We also show a method to generate a swept map that can be used for both visualization and evaluation. In the proof experiment, a dataset for actual painting work was collected using the proposed measurement system. Then, the dataset was analyzed, and the quality of the work was quantitatively evaluated by comparing skilled and unskilled persons.

Abstract Objective This retrospective study was designed to observe differences in ictal movements of epileptic spasm (ES) before and after corpus callosotomy (CC). We hypothesized that asymmetric expression of ES is more clarified after CC and would be a good indicator for the epileptic hemisphere. Methods We selected 16 patients with intractable ES in West syndrome who were seizure‐free after CC and subsequent resection or disconnective surgery of the unilateral hemisphere. We retrospectively reviewed their behavioral ES recorded at video‐electroencephalography monitoring before and after CC. Asymmetric neck flexion (NF) and involuntary muscular contraction of the upper and lower extremities (MCU and MCL, respectively) were primarily described correlating their laterality and the responsible hemisphere proved by surgical resection. Results Asymmetric NF, MCU, and MCL could be found both before and after CC. However, the percentage of those movements to the total number of ES increased after CC; asymmetric NF, 82.9% vs. 20.1%; unilaterally predominant MCU, 81% vs. 39.3%; and unilaterally predominant MCL, 77.6% vs. 29.9%. Regarding asymmetric NF, the direction in which the neck flexed or the head turned was significantly ipsilateral to the responsible hemisphere in 9 of 12 patients after CC (75%). The predominant side of MCU and MCL were significantly contralateral to the responsible hemisphere in 11 of 11 and 7 of 9 patients (100% and 77.8%, respectively). Significance Asymmetric NF, MCU, and MCL were clarified in patients with ES who were successfully treated with CC and subsequent surgery. Those changes in ictal behaviors after CC may indicate the lateralization of epileptic activity and encourage more curative surgical treatment.

Abstract Background Some of atrial fibrillation (AF) drivers are found in normal/mild late‐gadolinium enhancement (LGE) areas, as well as moderate ones. The atrial wall thickness (AWT) has been reported to be important as a possible AF substrate. However, the AWT and degree of LGEs as an AF substrate has not been fully validated in humans. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the AWT in normal/mild LGE areas on AF drivers. Methods A total of 287 segments in 15 persistent AF patients were assessed. Abstract Background Atrial inflammation plays an important role in initiating atrial fibrosis, which could perpetuate atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the method of visualization of atrial inflammation has not been established. We sought to investigate whether the intensive atrial inflammation caused by cryoballoon ablation (CBA) could be detected by positron emission tomography/ magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) and whether the atrial inflammation could be associated with consequent fibrosis. Methods A total of 10 paroxysmal atrial fibrillation patients after CBA were enrolled. To detect and quantify intensive atrial inflammation, PET/MRI was performed to assess regional 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose (18F‐FDG) uptake one day after the CBA, and the standardized uptake values (SUV) max were compared between the pulmonary vein (PV) antrum where CBA could be applied and the healthy left atrial (LA) wall where CBA could not be applied. Furthermore, the atrial inflammation one day after the procedure and atrial fibrosis areas one month after the procedure were three‐dimensionally quantified by PET/MRI and late‐gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (LGE‐MRI), respectively. Results The mean SUV max at the PV antrum was significantly higher than that on the healthy LA wall (2.12 ± 0.35 vs 1.73 ± 0.30, P = .00021). The volume of the atrial inflammation strongly correlated with that of the atrial fibrosis (r = .94 [.76‐.99], P = .00006). Conclusions The atrial inflammation after CBA could be detected by PET/MRI. CBA‐induced atrial inflammation was strongly associated with consequent lesion maturation.

Background Myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECV), measured by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, is a useful prognostic marker for patients who have undergone aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis. However, the prognostic significance of ECV measurements based on computed tomography (CT) is unclear. This study evaluated the association between ECV measured with dual‐energy CT and clinical outcomes in patients with aortic stenosis who underwent transcatheter or surgical AVR. Methods and Results We retrospectively enrolled 95 consecutive patients (age, 84.0±5.0 years; 75% women) with severe aortic stenosis who underwent preprocedural CT for transcatheter AVR planning. ECV was measured using iodine density images obtained by delayed enhancement dual‐energy CT. The primary end point was a composite outcome of all‐cause death and hospitalization for heart failure after AVR. The mean ECV measured with CT was 28.1±3.8%. During a median follow‐up of 2.6 years, 22 composite outcomes were observed, including 15 all‐cause deaths and 11 hospitalizations for heart failure. Abstract Background The ovarian reserve in women is known to correlate with anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, and currently the latest, third-generation, fully-automated AMH immunoassays, such as Access and Cobas, are beginning to be used for measuring AMH levels. However, the age-specific reference values obtained for AMH levels have been based on samples from an American population, measured using first-generation immunoassays. In this study, we attempted to determine the age-specific AMH reference values based on a large set of samples taken from Japanese infertile women measured by Access so that they could be used by infertility centers treating Japanese and those with similar racial and life-style characteristics. Methods The study included 5483 Japanese patients who enrolled in infertility treatment programs at two in-vitro fertilization centers, Shimbashi YUME Clinic and Natural ART Clinic Nihombashi in Tokyo, and who had their serum AMH levels measured between December 2015 and November 2017 by Access. Each patient was represented only once in the study. The mean, median, and standard deviation values were obtained from the measured values for single-year intervals from 28 through 48 years of age (21 age groups in total). The 3D-fitted curve of age-specific mean and median values measured by Access was obtained by regression analysis. Results The mean and median values decreased with advancing age (mean: R2 = 0.9864; median: R2 = 0.9926). In all age groups, the mean values were higher than the median values; however, the differences between these values decreased with increasing age. Conclusions The age-specific AMH reference values measured by Access in this study may serve as a useful diagnostic marker in infertility centers, especially those treating Japanese patients or patients with similar characteristics.

This paper presents newly developed two high-precision CMOS proximity capacitance image sensors: Chip A with 12 μm pitch pixels with a large detection area of 1.68 cm2; Chip B with 2.8 μm pitch 1.8 M pixels for a higher resolution. Both fabricated chips achieved a capacitance detection precision of less than 100 zF (10−19 F) at an input voltage of 20 V and less than 10 zF (10−20 F) at 300 V due to the noise cancelling technique. Furthermore, by using multiple input pulse amplitudes, a capacitance detection dynamic range of up to 123 dB was achieved. The spatial resolution improvement was confirmed by the experimentally obtained modulation transfer function for Chip B with various line and space pattens. The examples of capacitance imaging using the fabricated chips were also demonstrated.

PurposeTo retrospectively assess the repeatability of physiological F-18 labeled fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the skin on positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) and explore its regional distribution and relationship with sex and age.MethodsOut of 562 examinations with normal FDG distribution on whole-body PET/MRI, 74 repeated examinations were evaluated to assess the repeatability and regional distribution of physiological skin uptake. Furthermore, 224 examinations were evaluated to compare differences in the uptake due to sex and age. Skin segmentation on PET was performed as body-surface contouring on an MR-based attenuation correction map using an off-line reconstruction software. Bland-Altman plots were created for the repeatability assessment. Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to compare the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) with regional distribution, age, and sex.ResultsThe limits of agreement for the difference in SUVmean and SUVmax of the skin were less than 30%. The highest SUVmax was observed in the face (3.09±1.04), followed by the scalp (2.07±0.53). The SUVmax in the face of boys aged 0-9 years and 10-20 years (1.33±0.64 and 2.05±1.00, respectively) and girls aged 0-9 years (0.98±0.38) was significantly lower than that of men aged ≥20 years and girls aged ≥10 years (pConclusionPET/MRI enabled the quantitative analysis of skin FDG uptake with repeatability. The degree of physiological FDG uptake in the skin was the highest in the face and varied between sexes. Although attention to differences in body habitus between age groups is needed, skin FDG uptake also depended on age.

Abstract Background Rhythm outcomes after the pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using the cryoballoon (CB) are reported to be excellent. However, the lesions after CB ablation have not been well discussed. We sought to characterize and compare the lesion formation after CB ablation with that after radiofrequency (RF) ablation. Methods A total of 42 consecutive patients who underwent PVI were enrolled (29 in the CB group and 13 in the RF group). The PVI lesions were assessed by late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance imaging 1–3 months after the PVI. The region around the PVs was divided into eight segments: roof, anterior‐superior, anterior‐carina, anterior‐inferior, bottom, posterior‐inferior, posterior‐carina, and posterior‐superior segment. The lesion width and lesion gap in each segment were compared between the two groups. Lesion gaps were defined as no‐enhancement sites of >4 mm. Results As compared to the RF group, the overall lesion width was significantly wider and lesion gaps significantly fewer at the anterior‐superior segment of the left PV (LAS) and anterior‐inferior segment of the right PV (RAI) in the CB group (lesion width: 8.2 ± 2.2 mm vs 5.6 ± 2.0 mm, P = .001; lesion gap at LAS: 7% vs 38%, P = .02; lesion gap at RAI: 7% vs 46%, P = .006). Conclusions The PVI lesions after CB ablation were characterized by extremely wider and more continuous lesions than those after RF ablation.

Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) has attracted increasing attention for non-invasive functional imaging in biomedicine and biomedical studies. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is a potential acoustical detector with high sensitivity and wide bandwidth for use in high-resolution 3D PAM. In this study, we investigated a simple Kretschmann SPR sensor, demonstrating highly sensitive stress detection in the sub-nanosecond timescale by directly inducing photo-thermal transient stress. To do this, we designed and used a sub-nanosecond pump probe system. The SPR sensor clearly detected the transient response from the thermal elastic effect, while a simple pump-probe sensor without SPR did not detect it. Our experimental results demonstrate a simple SPR sensor that can detect stress with high sensitivity and sub-nanosecond time resolution. This technique could be used in high-resolution 3D PAM by mounting a small biomedical sample on the sensor.

Near-isogenic lines (NILs), carrying different combinations of Ppd-1 genes in the genetic background of an early-maturity cultivar Abukumawase were grown at two sites for two years to elucidate the effects of photoperiodic response genes on the growth and yield of early-maturity wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) in central and southwestern Japan. Photoperiod-insensitive genes, Ppd-B1a and Ppd-D1a , accelerated young spike development, and this effect was predominant with Ppd-B1 with no additive effect among them. Ppd-B1a and Ppd-D1a also advanced the jointing stage, heading, and maturity, and the effect of Ppd-B1a on the jointing stage and heading was stronger than that of Ppd-D1a. An additive effect of two genes was detected for heading. Besides, Ppd-B1a and Ppd-D1a reduced culm length and grain weight, although the reduction effect on grain weight was not significant. Meanwhile, the mean temperature from double ridge formation stage to heading was lower in NILs with photoperiod-insensitive genes than in NILs with photoperiod-sensitive gene, and there was a significant correlation between mean temperature from double ridge formation stage to terminal spikelet formation stage and spikelet number per spike as well as between mean temperature from terminal spikelet formation stage to heading and grain number per spikelet. Therefore in a genetic background of extremely early-maturity line of spring type wheat, photoperiod-insensitive genes accelerated wheat growth and reduced spikelet numbers in central and southwestern Japan, and the effect of Ppd-B1a was stronger than that of Ppd-D1a.

A low cadmium (Cd) concentration in wheat grain is desirable because of Cd toxicity to humans. Grain Cd concentrations in Japanese wheat differed among the varieties in previous study. In this study, we hypothesized that the varieties with a low concentration of Cd in grain have (1) low Cd uptake from the soil through the roots during early growth and/or (2) low Cd translocation from the roots to shoots, and also, that (3) Cd uptake from soil is affected by root morphology. These hypotheses were verified by investigating the concentration and quantity of Cd in root, shoot and leaf tissues, and examining the root morphology of young seedlings of wheat varieties with high and low grain Cd concentrations. Seedlings of ‘Kitahonami’ and ‘Nanbukomugi’ which had low grain Cd concentration (low Cd/G varieties) had a lower Cd quantity in whole plant tissues than ‘Nishikazekomugi’ and ‘Kitakamikomugi’ which had high grain Cd concentration (high Cd/G varieties) during early growth. Low Cd/G varieties also showed lower root to shoot (aerial parts) translocation of Cd than high Cd/G varieties. Seedlings of low Cd/G varieties showed less root branching than high Cd/G varieties. Root frequency showed a significant positive correlation with Cd quantity in whole plant tissues. These results suggest that low Cd/G varieties used in this study have low Cd uptake and translocation from the roots to shoots during early growth, and furthermore, that low Cd uptake at the seedling stage may relate to slow and/or limited development of branching roots.

The previous work revealed that the polarization of light reflected from heading wheat canopies allowed the detection of changes in the canopy structure, i.e., the leaf inclination angle. Accordingly, in order to improve measurement accuracy in this study we examined the effects of the solar zenith angle (= 90º–solar elevation) and weather conditions at the time of polarization measurements for the light reflected from wheat canopies that were fertilized by different means. We measured polarization in the 660 nm spectral band from the heading canopies of wheat, which were grown in plots fertilized with a basal dressing and then top-dressed at the jointing and booting stages. The radiometric measurements were carried out at various solar zenith angles: 22º–41º on two proximal days, one overcast and the other clear. An empirical method for the adjustment of view zenith angle, based on the solar position at the time of measurement, was effective for the measurement of the degree of polarization (i.e., ratio of the polarized part of reflected light to the total reflected light energy) to eliminate interference due to the change in solar zenith angle. Although the mean values of polarization degree measured in overcast conditions were significantly lower than those measured under clear conditions, the plots top-dressed at the jointing stage could be detected via the polarized reflected light measured under both conditions of illumination.

The contamination of cadmium (Cd) into the food chain can be harmful because Cd causes chronic health problems. To evaluate the breeding potential reducing the Cd concentration in wheat grain, we compared Cd concentrations in 237 wheat genotypes including Japanese landraces, Japanese cultivars and introduced alien cultivars for breeding using grain samples collected from upland fields in 2004−5 and 2005−6 growing seasons. The Cd concentration in wheat grain significantly varied with the growing seasons and with the experimental fields. Cultivars bred in northern Japan, including the recent Japanese leading cultivar ‘Hokushin’, tended to have a low Cd concentration in grain compared with that bred in central and southern Japan. Simple correlation analysis between Cd concentration in grain and agronomic characteristics revealed that the Cd concentration in grain showed significant negative correlations with stem number, culm length and spikelet number per spike, and showed significant positive correlation with SPAD value (chlorophyll content) of flag leaf. Stepwise multipleregression analysis showed that the genotypic variation of Cd concentration in grain was associated with the culm length and spiklet number per spike. This study clarified the geographical pattern of genotypes with different Cd concentrations in grain in Japanese wheat cultivars. Cultivars originating from northern Japan may be useful genetic resources to develop cultivars with a low Cd concentration in grain to be grown in the areas where Cd accumulation in wheat grain is a problem.

In this study, we extended previous work linking the polarization of reflected light from crop canopies with characteristics of the canopy structure, such as the leaf inclination angle. We obtained reflectance and polarized reflectance in 8 spectral bands from the canopies of two varieties of wheat, planted in plots fertilized with a basal dressing and topdressed at the jointing and booting stages. The optical measurements were carried out on 3 clear-sky days when the plants were at the stem-elongation, heading and ripening stages, respectively. On each measurement date, we assessed the leaf orientation geometry of the plants using a Plant Canopy Analyzer (LAI-2000), measured the leaf greenness (an indicator of leaf chlorophyll content) using a handheld SPAD-502 (SPAD) optical sensor, and also measured plant height. Both polarization and leaf greenness observations at the heading stage were able to distinguish the canopies that had received topdressing from those without topdressing. However, no significant correlation was observed between the polarization in the blue, green and red bands and the SPAD (r = 0.425ᵻ0.456, n = 12 observations, p < 0.05). On the other hand, the mean leaf inclination angle (= mean tip angle: MTA) measured by the LAI-2000 was inversely correlated with the polarization in the 3 visible bands (r = −0.85ᵻ−0.88, n = 12, p < 0.001). Adjusting the view zenith angle according to the solar position at the time of measurement improved the accuracy. We tested a linear regression model to predict the MTA of the two wheat varieties based on polarized reflectance in the red band centered at 660 nm (r 2 = 0.73, n = 12, p < 0.001). Validation of this model obtained in the subsequent cropping season confirmed that polarization measurements were potentially useful for estimating the MTA of wheat stands in which the panicles were located below the topmost leaf layer of the canopy.

The hard soil in the field is a major constraint for the cereal production because it mechanically restricts the root expansion and water absorption. The ability of root to penetrate into the hard soil is an important factor affecting yield stability of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under hard soil and drought conditions. We investigated the variation in the penetrating ability of roots (PA) among Japanese wheat cultivars and its relationship with other shoot and root characters to acquire basic information to develop the cultivars with a higher PA. The evaluation was conducted by the two experiments using the two groups of cultivars: 1) 43 Hokkaido cultivars in the first experiment, 2) 38 Honsyu, including Shikoku and Kyusyu, cultivars in the second experiment. In each experiment, one seedling of each cultivar was grown in a pot with a disc made of paraffin and Vaseline mixture (PV) as a substitute for the hard soil layer. The number of roots penetrating through the PV disc per plant (NRP), the number of seminal and crown roots reached the PV disc per plant (NRR) and the penetration index (PI = NRP/NRR) of each cultivar were evaluated as the traits related to PA. NRP significantly varied with the cultivar from 4.0 to 29.7 and 3.0 to 22.0 in the first and second experiments, respectively. NRP were significantly correlated with NRR (r=0.644** in the first and r=0.477** in the second experiment) and PI (r=0.863** in the first and r=0.811** in the second experiment), but the relationships between NRR and PI were not significant (r=0.260 in the first and r=0.190 in the second experiment). NRR was significantly correlated with the degree of winter growth habit (requirement of vernalization), root dry weight (DW) above the PV disc, the number of stems and leaf DW in each population. Correlations between PI and other characters were low or not significant. These results indicate that a large genotypic variation exists among Japanese wheat cultivars in NRP, and that PI is a suitable indicator of PA. Cultivars with a high PA detected in this study will be useful genetic resources of wheat to improve the yield stability under drought and hard soil conditions.

The polarization of light reflected from crop canopies gives information on the canopy structure, such as the distribution of leaf inclinations. In order to verify those findings and to put the technique to practical use, we conducted two experiments in wheat fields. In the first experiment, the reflectance and polarized reflectance at 660 nm in the canopies of wheat plants, sown in both narrow and wide rows, and at two levels of topdressing, were measured periodically with a spectropolarimeter. We also probed the leaf orientation geometry of the plants using a 3-D digitizer and a plant canopy analyzer (LAI-2000). In the second experiment, we observed the polarization of light reflected from wheat planted in plots fertilized with basal dressing, and topdressing at the jointing and booting stages. Polarization showed a seasonal change with an upward convex clearly indicating the heading time. This pattern was not found by conventional band reflectance. Using polarization, it was possible to detect the differences in row width and fertilization conditions during the booting stage. The mean leaf inclination angle (MLI) detected with the 3-D digitizer and the mean tip angle (MTA) detected with the LAI-2000 were relatively closely correlated with the polarization than the reflectance at 660 nm and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) that was derived from the reflectance at 660 nm and 830 nm. Topdressing at the jointing stage was well detected by polarization obtained at the heading stage. Polarization measurements are useful in practical terms for remote detection of changes in stand geometry induced by cultivation management such as topdressing.
