1. A simulation study on the sub-threshold joint gravitational wave-electromagnetic wave observation on binary neutron star mergers

Abstract

The coalescence of binary neutron stars (BNS) is a prolific source of gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, offering a dual observational window into the Universe. Lowering the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) threshold is a simple and cost-effective way to enhance the detection probability of GWs from BNS mergers. In this study, we introduce a metric of the purity of joint GW and EM detections $P_{\rm joint}$, which is in analogue to $P_{\rm astro}$ in GW only observations. By simulating BNS merger GWs jointly detected by the HLV network and EM counterparts (kilonovae and short Gamma-ray bursts, sGRBs) with an assumed merger rate density of BNS, we generate catalogs of GW events and EM counterparts. Through this simulation, we analyze joint detection pairs, both correct and misidentified. We find the following: 1. For kilonovae, requiring $P_{\rm joint}>$ 95\% instead of $P_{\rm astro}>95\%$ reduces the S/N from 9.2 to 8.5-8.8, allowing 5-13 additional joint detections per year and increasing the GW detection volume by 9-17\%; 2. For sGRBs, requiring $P_{\rm joint}>$ 95\% instead of $P_{\rm astro}$ reduces the S/N from 9.2 to 8.1-8.5; 3. Increasing kilonova or sGRB detection capability does not improve $P_{\rm joint}$ due to a higher rate of misidentifications. We also show that sub-threshold GW and kilonova detections can reduce the uncertainty in measuring the Hubble constant to 89-92\% of its original value, and sub-threshold GW and sGRB observations can enhance the precision of constraining the speed of GWs to 88\% of previously established values., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The brightest-of-all-time gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, is the first GRB observed to have emission line (up to 37 MeV) in its prompt emission spectra. It is naturally explained as \pair annihilation line that was Doppler boosted in the relativistic jet of the GRB. In this work, we repeatedly apply the simple optical depth argument to different physical processes necessary to produce an observable \pair annihilation line. This approach results in robust constraints on the physics of the line: We conclude that in GRB 221009A, the \pair pairs were produced at a radius greater than $4.3\times 10^{15}$\,cm from the central engine, and annihilated in a region between $1.4\times 10^{16}$\,cm and $4.3\times 10^{16}$\,cm. From these constraints, we established a self-consistent picture of \pair production, cooling, and annihilation. We also derived a criterion for pair production in the GRB prompt emission: $E_{\rm{iso}} \gtrsim3.3\times 10^{53} E_{\rm{peak},100} (1+z) R^2_{\rm{prod},16}~\text{erg}$. Using this criterion, we find tens of candidate GRBs that could have produced \pair in prompt emissions to annihilate. GRB 221009A is with the highest likelihood according to this criterion. We also predict the presence of a thermal radiation, with a time-evolving black body temperature, sweeping through soft X-ray during the prompt emission phase., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

3. NEW LUBRICATING NATURAL POLYMER FOR WATER-REPELLENT UPPER LEATHER PRODUCTION

Abstract

In this study, collagen hydrolysate from bovine shaving wastes of leather production with the alkali hydrolysis reaction was emulsified with amino functional silicone oils to prepare lubricating natural polymer (LNP). Particle size and zeta potential of the LNP were measured. Prepared LNP was used in the fatliquoring step of chromium tanned bovine leathers. Contact angle of the leather surfaces with water were employed to study hydrophobicity of treated leather. The water absorption behavior of leather was determined by dynamic water resistance (penetrometer test) and static water resistance tests (kubelka water up-take). Performance characterizations of leathers were carried out with tensile strength, tear strength, filling efficiency and water vapour permeability (WVP) analyses. The contact angle measurements showed that the hydrophilic property of leather surface decreased after LNP treatment. Both dynamic and static water absorption behaviour was lowered while the WVP of leathers was not significantly affected negatively except of 20% LNP. Only 20% LNP application slightly decreased the WVP of leathers. Moreover, new lubricating agent provided satisfactory strength performance and good filling effect on leathers.

Abstract

4U 1543--47 is one of a handful of known black hole candidates located in the Milky Way Galaxy, and has undergone a very bright outburst in 2021, reaching a total of $\sim$9 Crab, as observed by the Monitor of All-sky Image (MAXI), and exceeding twice its Eddington luminosity. The unprecedented bright outburst of 4U 1543--47 provides a unique opportunity to test the behavior of accretion disk models at high luminosities and accretion rates. In addition, we explore the possibility of constraining the spin of the source at high accretion rates, given that previous spin measurements of 4U 1543--47 have been largely inconsistent with each other. We measure the spectral evolution of the source throughout its outburst as observed by Insight-HXMT, and compare the behavior of both the thin disk model kerrbb2, as well as the slim disk model slimbh up to the Eddington limit for two different values of disk $\alpha$-viscosity. In addition, given the behavior of these two models, we identify two `golden' epochs for which it is most suitable to measure the spin with continuum fitting., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In this work, using \textit{NICER} and \textit{Insight}-HXMT observations, we present a study of the broadband spectral and timing evolution of the source throughout the first reflare, which occurred about 4 months after the major outburst. Our findings suggest that during the reflare, below a critical luminosity $L_{\rm crit}\sim2.5\times10^{36}$ (D/2.2 kpc)$^{2}$ erg s$^{-1}$, the scale of the corona shrinks in the radial direction, whereas the inner radius of the disk does not change considerably; however, the inner radius of the disk starts to move inward when the source exceeds the critical luminosity. We conclude that at low luminosity the increase in accretion rate only heats up the inner zone of the accretion disc without the transfer of angular momentum which occurs above a certain luminosity.

Abstract

We report the X-ray timing results of the black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070 during its 2018 outburst using the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER) observations. Low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are detected in the low/hard state and the hard intermediate state, which lasted for about 90 days. Thanks to the large effective area of Insight-HXMT at high energies and NICER at low energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of the LFQPO characteristics and phase lags from 0.2 keV to 200 keV, which has never been explored by previous missions. We find that the centroid frequency of the LFQPOs do not change significantly with energy, while the full width at half maximum (FWHM) and fractional rms show a complex evolution with energy. The LFQPO phase lags at high energies and low energies show consistent energy-dependence relations taking the ~2 keV as reference. Our results suggest that the LFQPOs from high energy come from the LT precession of the relativistic jet, while the low-energy radiation is mainly from the perpendicular innermost regions of the accretion disk.

8. A comparative study of learning curves among general surgery residents for intraoperative ultrasound-guided breast-conserving surgery

Abstract

Abstract Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy is preferred for early-stage breast cancer because its survival rate is equivalent to that of mastectomy. Achieving negative surgical margins in BCS is crucial to minimize the risk of recurrence. Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) enhances surgical accuracy, but its efficacy is operator dependent. This study aimed to compare the success of achieving negative margins using IOUS between an experienced breast surgeon and general surgical residents and to evaluate the learning curve for the residents. A prospective study involving 96 patients with BCS who underwent IOUS guidance was conducted. Both the breast surgeon and residents assessed the surgical margins using IOUS, with the breast surgeon making the final margin adequacy decision. Permanent histopathological analysis was used to confirm the status of the margins and was considered the gold standard for comparison. The breast surgeon accurately assessed the margin status in all 96 cases (100% accuracy), with 93 negative and three positive margins. All of these were ductal carcinomas in situ. Initially, the residents demonstrated low accuracy rates in predicting margin positivity using intraoperative ultrasonography. However, the learning curves of the three residents demonstrated that, with an average 12th case onwards, a significant improvement in the cumulative accuracy rates was observed, which reached the level of the breast surgeon. IOUS is an effective tool for accurately predicting the margin status in BCS, with an acceptable learning curve for novice surgeons. Training and experience are pivotal for optimizing surgical outcomes. These findings support the integration of IOUS training into surgical education programs to enhance proficiency and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract Patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) are used to assess a patient's health status at a particular point in time. They are essential in the development of person‐centred care. This paper reviews studies performed on PROMs for assessing AR and asthma control, in particular VAS scales that are included in the app MASK‐air® (Mobile Airways Sentinel networK) for asthma and rhinitis. VASs were initially developed on paper and pencil and tested for their criterion validity, cut‐offs and responsiveness. Then, a multicentric, multinational, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, randomised control trial (DB‐PC‐RCT) using an electronic VAS form was carried out. Finally, with the development of MASK‐air® in 2015, previously validated VAS questions were adapted to the digital format and further methodologic evaluations were performed. VAS for asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, work and EQ‐5D are included in the app. Additionally, two control‐medication scores for allergic symptoms of asthma (e‐DASTHMA) were validated for their criterion validity, cut‐offs and responsiveness.

Abstract

Abstract Background and aims The treatment of asthmatic patients is particularly focused on the control of symptoms as well as functional and inflammatory parameters. In our study, we investigated the relationship between the asthma control test (ACT) which evaluates symptoms and airway inflammation and functional parameters. Materials and methods Stable asthmatic patients admitted to our pulmonary outpatient clinic were enrolled in the study consecutively and underwent the ACT, pulmonary function tests and methacholine bronchial provocation test (MBPT). Additionally, fractional exhaled nitric oxide level (FeNO) and induced sputum cell distribution were assessed. All these parameters were re-evaluated at the third month after adjusting medications of the patients according to baseline ACT scores. Results Of the 101 patients screened, we analyzed 83 who proceeded to the follow up visit. At the baseline visit, 8 were totally controlled, 36 partially controlled and 39 uncontrolled according to ACT. At the follow up visit, 10 were totally controlled, 39 partially controlled and 34 uncontrolled. Comparison of the two visits in terms of all parameters revealed significant reductions only in the percentages of patients with MBPT positivity (p = 0.029) and FeNO levels > 20 ppb (p = 0.025) at follow up. The percentages of patients with FeNO > 20 ppb, MBPT positivity, induced sputum eosinophilia or induced sputum neutrophilia did not show significant differences between totally controlled, partially controlled and uncontrolled groups at both baseline and follow up visits. Conclusion Although the ACT scores did not show significant correlations with the airway inflammation parameters tested in this study, a marked reduction in the percentage of patients with MBPT positivity and FeNO > 20 ppb at follow up may suggest the importance of the control concept in the management of asthma.

Abstract

Abstract Background and aims Recently a multidimensional grading system based on the body mass index (B), degree of airflow obstruction (O), dyspnea (D) and exercise capacity (E) - the BODE index - has begun to be used increasingly for the evaluation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between the BODE index and disease duration, annual exacerbation and hospitalization rates, health related quality of life and systemic inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-8. Materials and methods In 88 stable COPD patients we evaluated the body-mass index, pulmonary function tests, Modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale and six-minute walk test (6 MWT). BODE scores were determined. Disease duration, number of exacerbations and hospitalization in the previous year were recorded. We also performed arterial blood gases analysis, administered the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and measured serum levels of CRP, TNF-α, IL-8. Results According to BODE score 52% of patients were BODE 1, 21% BODE 2, 15% BODE 3 and 12% were BODE 4. There was a significant relationship between BODE index and COPD stage as classified according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) (p < 0.001). Correlations between BODE score and disease duration (p = 0.011), number of exacerbations (p < 0.001) and hospitalizations (p < 0.001) in the last year were also observed. SGRQ symptom, activity, emotion scores and total scores were found to be significantly correlated to BODE (p < 0.001). Serum CRP levels and BODE were also correlated (p = 0.014); however, no correlation was found between serum levels of TNF-α and IL-8 and BODE. Conclusions As the BODE index shows a strong correlation with various prognostic and follow up parameters of COPD and systemic inflammation, its use should be considered for the evaluation of COPD patients.

13. Political CSR in hybrid regimes

Abstract

Political CSR (PCSR) recognizes corporations as political actors that are embedded within the society. The PCSR literature mostly focuses in situations where the public authorities are unable or unwilling to fulfil their roles regarding certain public provisions. Rather than aligning with the current literature's tendency on the dichotomy of developed state vs. fragile/failed state with weak governance - an approach emphasizing the strength of the state institutions via the notion of governance gaps - , this study attempts to reframe the PCSR concept with a particular focus on the political regime type of the context. Besides pointing literature' lack of focus on the various PCSR modalities depending on the political regime type, this study calls for a more granular mapping between the PCSR behaviour and the political regime type of the context. The study focuses on hybrid political regimes via taking Turkey - a typical hybrid regime encompassing both democratic and autocratic features - as its background. Besides the study's focus on this semi-democratic regime type that constitutes almost one third of the countries in the world, another focal point is the gender equality related PCSR activities of firms, as the gender (in)equality issue is treated as the flagship issue of democracy in the studied context (and possibly in several other similar contexts). The empirical findings of the study demonstrate that PCSR can be utilized as a contestation tool in such contexts to show the political stance of firms against illiberal policies of their governments. As a novel overall addition to the literature, the study claims PCSR to be a tool for political ideology manifestation for firms in such contexts. The study proposes a PCSR behaviour model covering macro-mezzo-micro levels, attempting to shed partial light on the interplay between the hybrid context and PCSR behavior of firms. The study first examines the contextual factors that serve as a foundational layer for a hybrid environment for firms. With the help of the empirical data, the PCSR modalities of firms that are likely to spring under such a hybrid regime are identified. Accordingly, PCSR behaviour of firms in the hybrid context are categorized into four main types depending on the overtness of the firms' PCSR behaviour and their expressed intentionality of contestation. Additionally, the drivers that might lead seemingly similar firms to diverse PCSR modalities are also identified in three levels (individual, firm and systemic relational) and added to the overarching model as well. Overall, this study attempts to partially fill the existing gap in the PCSR literature regarding the significance of regime differentiation and its effects on the PCSR behaviour. The study particularly contributes to the wider discussion around PCSR and democratization.

Abstract

We report results on the timing analysis of the 2020 giant outburst of 1A 0535+262, using broadband data from Insight-HXMT. The analysis of the pulse profile evolution from the sub-critical luminosity to super-critical luminosity regime is presented for the first time. We found that the observed pulse profile exhibits a complex dependence on both energy and luminosity.A dip structure at the energy of the cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) is found for the first time in the pulse fraction-energy relation of 1A 0535+262, when the outburst evolves in a luminosity range from 4.8 $\times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to 1.0 $\times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The observed structure is luminosity dependent and appears around the source critical luminosity ($\sim$ 6.7 $\times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$).

Abstract

Abstract Rationale It is unclear how each individual asthma symptom is associated with asthma diagnosis or control. Objectives To assess the performance of individual asthma symptoms in the identification of patients with asthma and their association with asthma control. Methods In this cross‐sectional study, we assessed real‐world data using the MASK‐air® app. We compared the frequency of occurrence of five asthma symptoms (dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue and night symptoms, as assessed by the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test [CARAT] questionnaire) in patients with probable, possible or no current asthma. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of each symptom, and assessed the association between each symptom and asthma control (measured using the e‐DASTHMA score). Results were validated in a sample of patients with a physician‐established diagnosis of asthma. Measurement and Main Results We included 951 patients (2153 CARAT assessments), with 468 having probable asthma, 166 possible asthma and 317 no evidence of asthma. Wheezing displayed the highest specificity (90.5%) and positive predictive value (90.8%). In patients with probable asthma, dyspnea and chest tightness were more strongly associated with asthma control than other symptoms. Dyspnea was the symptom with the highest sensitivity (76.1%) and the one consistently associated with the control of asthma as assessed by e‐DASTHMA. Consistent results were observed when assessing patients with a physician‐made diagnosis of asthma. Conclusions Wheezing and chest tightness were the asthma symptoms with the highest specificity for asthma diagnosis, while dyspnea displayed the highest sensitivity and strongest association with asthma control.

Abstract

Sağlık teknikerliği, ülkemizdeki sağlık hizmetlerinin sunumunda oldukça önemlidir. Ancak sağlık teknikerleri bu unvana sahip olduktan sonra bazı fiziksel ve psikolojik sıkıntılar yaşayabilmekte ve bu da mesleği bırakma eğilimini artırmaktadır. Diğer taraftan, psikolojik sağlamlık ve meslek seçimi arasındaki ilişkileri inceleyen fazla çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, geleceğin sağlık teknikerlerinin meslek seçimlerinde, kişiliklerinin ve psikolojik sağlamlıklarının etkisini araştırmaktır. Araştırmaya, Ankara’daki bir devlet üniversitesinin sağlık hizmetleri meslek yüksekokulunda öğrenim gören 465 sağlık teknikeri adayı katılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında “On-Maddeli Kişilik Ölçeği”, “Kısa Psikolojik Sağlamlık Ölçeği” ve “Sağlık Teknikerliğinde Meslek Seçimi Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Sağlık teknikerliği mesleğinin seçiminde etkili olan faktörleri ortaya çıkarmak için basit doğrusal regresyon analizi uygulanmıştır. Kişilik ölçeğine ilişkin analiz bulgularına bakıldığında, sağlık teknikerliği öğrencilerinin daha az stresli ve daha az kaygılı bireyler oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Stres, kaygı, depresyon gibi psikolojik sorunlarla başa çıkabilme eğilimini temsil eden psikolojik sağlamlıklarının ise düşük olduğu görülmüştür. Diğer taraftan öğrenciler sağlık teknikerliği mesleğini, ilgi alanlarına ve yeteneklerine uygun bulmaktadırlar. Sağlık teknikerliği öğrencilerinin kişilik özellikleri, psikolojik sağlamlıkları ve mesleği seçme eğilimleri arasındaki ilişkilere bakıldığında ise kişilik alt boyutlarından dışadönüklük ve uyumluluk boyutlarının, meslek seçiminde pozitif anlamlı etkiye sahip olduğu, diğer taraftan psikolojik sağlamlığın, meslek seçiminde negatif anlamlı etkisinin olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Dışadönük, uyumlu, fakat düşük psikolojik sağlamlığa sahip bireylerin sağlık teknikerliği mesleğini tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir.

The purpose of this study is to find ideal forces for reducing cell stress in wound healing process by micro robots. Because of this aim, we made two simulations on COMSOL Multiphysics with micro robot to find correct force. As a result of these simulation, we created force curves to obtain the minimum force and friction force that could lift the cells from the surface will be determined. As the potential of the system for two micro robots that have 2 mm x 0.25 mm x 0.4 mm dimension SU-8 body with 3 NdFeB that have 0.25 thickness and diameter, simulation results at maximum force in the x-axis calculated with 4.640 mN, the distance between the two robots is 150 um., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Digital skills are emphasized in the ongoing process of digital transformation in higher education. In this article, digital literacy is discussed within the broader perspective of design literacy and the acceleration of the digitalization process of first-year design education at the time of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 is highlighted. The article interrogates the role of digital skills in the development of design literacy of first-year architecture students through a multiple case analysis of ARCH 101 design studio practices executed in the Bachelor of Architecture programmes at the Özyeğin University, Department of Architecture and the Middle East Technical University, Department of Architecture. The digitalization processes of ARCH 101 studios increased rapidly when the COVID-19 pandemic started and resulted in the integration of digital tools into basic design education in ways that transformed (1) the communication modalities and the representation and research strategies used by students, and (2) the understanding and methodologies of the design process when used as generative design tools.

36. Student and Tutor Perceptions of the Pedagogical Potential and Challenges of Design Jury as an Assessment Method

Abstract

This article examines the pedagogical potential and challenges of the design jury as an assessment method from the perceptions of the tutor/jury member and the design students. It aims to gain an understanding of the factors that create opportunities for, and barriers to, the promotion of learning in the design jury. It inquires the possible contributions of the jury into formative evaluation processes in design education. The results show that: (1) the communication modalities; and (2) the evaluation criteria influence the way tutors and students perceive design jury as a pedagogical method. While the hierarchy between the jury member and the student creates a barrier to constructive feedback, a balance between formative and summative evaluations is essential in the design jury. Transparency of evaluation criteria decreases design students' concern for grade. The design jury could also serve for formative evaluation. A student-centred approach to design jury engenders experiences of deep learning.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Validated questionnaires are used to assess asthma control over the past 1–4 weeks from reporting. However, they do not adequately capture asthma control in patients with fluctuating symptoms. Using the Mobile Airways Sentinel Network for airway diseases (MASK-air) app, we developed and validated an electronic daily asthma control score (e-DASTHMA). Methods: We used MASK-air data (freely available to users in 27 countries) to develop and assess different daily control scores for asthma. Data-driven control scores were developed based on asthma symptoms reported by a visual analogue scale (VAS) and self-reported asthma medication use. We included the daily monitoring data from all MASK-air users aged 16–90 years (or older than 13 years to 90 years in countries with a lower age of digital consent) who had used the app in at least 3 different calendar months and had reported at least 1 day of asthma medication use. For each score, we assessed construct validity, test–retest reliability, responsiveness, and accuracy. We used VASs on dyspnoea and work disturbance, EQ-5D-VAS, Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT), CARAT asthma, and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment: Allergy Specific (WPAI:AS) questionnaires as comparators. We performed an internal validation using MASK-air data from Jan 1 to Oct 12, 2022, and an external validation using a cohort of patients with physician-diagnosed asthma (the INSPIRERS cohort) who had had their diagnosis and control (Global Initiative for Asthma [GINA] classification) of asthma ascertained by a physician. Findings: We studied 135 635 days of MASK-air data from 1662 users from May 21, 2015, to Dec 31, 2021. The scores were strongly correlated with VAS dyspnoea (Spearman correlation coefficient range 0·68–0·82) and moderately correlated with work comparators and quality-of-life-related comparators (for WPAI:AS work, we observed Spearman correlation coefficients of 0·59–0·68). They also displayed high test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients range 0·79–0·95) and moderate-to-high responsiveness (correlation coefficient range 0·69–0·79; effect size measures range 0·57–0·99 in the comparison with VAS dyspnoea). The best-performing score displayed a strong correlation with the effect of asthma on work and school activities in the INSPIRERS cohort (Spearman correlation coefficients 0·70; 95% CI 0·61–0·78) and good accuracy for the identification of patients with uncontrolled or partly controlled asthma according to GINA (area under the receiver operating curve 0·73; 95% CI 0·68–0·78). Interpretation: e-DASTHMA is a good tool for the daily assessment of asthma control. This tool can be used as an endpoint in clinical trials as well as in clinical practice to assess fluctuations in asthma control and guide treatment optimisation. Funding: None.
