Automated vehicles (AVs) may require the implementation of an external human-machine interface (eHMI) to communicate their intentions to human-driven vehicles. The optimal placement of the eHMI, either on the AV itself or as part of the road infrastructure, remains undetermined. The current driving simulator study investigated the effect of eHMI positioning on human driving behavior, during the approach and execution of right turns at T-intersections. Forty-three participants drove under three conditions: absence of eHMI, eHMI on the AV (eHMIv), and eHMI integrated into the infrastructure (eHMIi). Participants encountered AVs that either yielded or did not yield to their vehicles. The results regarding the placement of the eHMI showed that both concepts are advantageous, but for different reasons. eHMIv was appreciated because implicit and explicit communication are congruent, although the AV must first be visually identified to respond to it. eHMIi was appreciated because a familiar cue is always at a known location in the environment; as a result, participants braked earlier for the intersection and came less close to the AV (which can be interpreted as a safety advantage or efficiency disadvantage). Although there are limitations to a driving simulator study like this, this research provides important insights into the fundamental question of how information placement affects drivers’ visual attention demands and driving behavior, topics that are important in view of the development of future cities.

Objectives: Esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EVB) is one of the main causes of cirrhosis-related deaths, and endoscopic therapy is the first-line treatment of choice. However, the efficacy of prophylactic endotracheal intubation (PEI) before endoscopy remains controversial. Methods: Data were collected from 119 patients who underwent endoscopic confirmation of an EVB. Inverse probability of treatment weighting was applied to reduce bias between the two groups. The primary outcomes included rebleeding rates within 24 h and 6 weeks post-endoscopic surgery and 6-week mortality. Results: After endoscopic surgery, the rebleeding rate within 24 h in the PEI group was significantly lower than non-PEI group (1.2 % VS 12.6 %, P-value = 0.025). Although PEI did not reduce 6-week mortality, it significantly reduced the risk of rebleeding within 24 h (odds ratio [OR]: 0.89, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.82–0.97, P = 0.008) and within 6 weeks (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.36, 95%CI: 0.14–0.90, P = 0.029). Background: Lansoprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), is the primary therapy for peptic ulcers (PU). Potassium competitive acid blockers (P-CAB) offer an alternative for acid suppression. However, the efficacy and safety of P-CABs versus lansoprazole in the management of PU has not been evaluated.Methods: Five databases were searched for randomized clinical trials in English until 31 August 2023. Data extraction provided outcome counts for ulcer healing, recurrent NSAID-related ulcer, and adverse events. The pooled effect, presented as rate difference (RD), was stratified by ulcer location, follow-up time, and the types of P-CAB, along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).Results: The pooled healing rates of peptic ulcers were 95.3% (1,100/1,154) and 95.0% (945/995) for P-CABs and lansoprazole, respectively (RD: 0.4%, 95% CI: −1.4%–2.3%). The lower bounds of the 95% CI fell within the predefined non-inferiority margin of −6%. In subgroup analyses base on ulcer location, and follow-up time also demonstrated non-inferiority. The drug-related treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) did not differ significantly among groups (RR: 0.997, 95% CI: 0.949–1.046, p = 0.893). However, P-CAB treatment was associated with an increased risk of the serious adverse events compared to lansoprazole (RR: 1.325, 95% CI: 1.005–1.747, p = 0.046).Conclusion: P-CABs demonstrated non-inferiority to lansoprazole in the management of peptic ulcer. The safety and tolerability profile are comparable, with similar TEAEs rates. BackgroundSortilin, a protein that regulates glucose and lipid metabolism, has recently been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as coronary heart disease and carotid artery stenosis. In this study, we measured circulating sortilin concentrations in essential hypertensive (EH) patients, and evaluated the association between sortilin, hypertension, and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive individuals.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 336 individuals, including 186 newly diagnosed EH patients and 150 age-and-sex-matched normotensive healthy subjects (NT). Plasma sortilin and adiponectin (ADI) levels were measured using ELISA kits. In the EH group, high-resolution B-mode ultrasound was used to detect the existence of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (subAS), which was defined as having a carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT) ≥ 1.0 mm and/or plaque on the carotid artery without any clinical manifestations.ResultsOur findings showed that plasma sortilin concentrations ranged from 3.34–11.34 ng/ml for all subjects. Sortilin levels were significantly higher in the EH group than in the NT group (8.10 ± 1.82 ng/ml vs. 6.37 ± 1.52 ng/ml, P < 0.001) and were further upregulated in the EH with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (EH + subAS) group compared to the EH without subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (EH-subAS) group (8.42 ± 1.75 ng/ml vs. 7.79 ± 1.84 ng/ml, P < 0.05). In correlation analysis, sortilin was positively correlated with systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), white blood cell (WBC), endothelin-1 (ET-1), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and cIMT (all P < 0.05) and negatively associated with NO and ADI (P < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that SBP, LDL-C, and ET-1 were independently associated with plasma sortilin levels. Increased sortilin levels were independently associated with the risk of EH (OR: 1.86, 95%CI: 1.56–2.20, P < 0.001) and EH + subAS (OR: 1.33, 95%CI: 1.07–1.66, P = 0.011), after adjustment for multiple risk factors. Restricted spline curve showed that elevated sortilin levels increase the odds of having EH.ConclusionElevated sortilin levels are associated with an increased risk of essential hypertension and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive patients.

To systemically evaluate the effect of acid suppressants on the risk of GIB in patients treated with NOACs. All related studies were searched in four databases (Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science) from their establishment to August 10, 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was used to identify studies and Stata 16.0 software was used for meta-analysis, including sensitivity and subgroup analysis. Summary: Electric-field (E-field) control of magnetic switching provides an energy-efficient means to toggle the magnetic states in spintronic devices. The angular tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of an magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)/PMN-PT magnetoelectronic hybrid indicates that the angle-dependent switching fields of the free layer can decrease significantly subject to the application of an E-field. In particular, the switching field along the major axis is reduced by 59% from 28.0 to 11.5 Oe as the E-field increases from 0 to 6 kV/cm, while the TMR ratio remains intact. The switching boundary angle decreases (increases) for the parallel (antiparallel) to antiparallel (parallel) state switch, resulting in a shrunk switching window size. The non-volatile and reversible 180° magnetization switching is demonstrated by using E-fields with a smaller magnetic field bias as low as 11.5 Oe. The angular magnetic switching originates from competition among the E-field-induced magnetoelastic anisotropy, magnetic shape anisotropy, and Zeeman energy, which is confirmed by micromagnetic simulations.

Clamping effects in ferroelestastic thin films limits their usefulness for applications such as sensitive mechanical sensors. Functional oxide superlattices offer new and exciting possibilities for the exploration of emergent properties at the nanoscale. While the behavior of La1−xSrxFeO3 films has been extensively investigated at low temperatures, few studies have been carried out at high temperatures, particularly for LaFeO3/SrFeO3 superlattice systems. Here, we investigate the transport behavior and optical properties of (LaFeO3)n/(SrFeO3)1 superlattices at 373 K and above. Using optical spectroscopy, we observe a low energy excitation at ∼1 eV, attributable to charge transfer between the O 2p and Fe 3d states of the δ-doped single SrFeO3 layer. From in-plane conductivity measurements on the superlattices, we determine activation energies that are much lower than those of alloyed samples and vary with the total number of SrFeO3 layers. This suggests that polaronic transport is confined near the SrFeO3 regions, permitting mobilities significantly enhanced over those in alloyed thin films.

Understanding and controlling the domain evolution under external stimuli in multiferroic thin films is critical to realizing nanoelectronic devices, including for non-volatile memory, data storage, sensors, and optoelectronics. In this article, we studied the shear-strain effect on the domain evolution with temperature in highly strained BiFeO3 thin films on rhombohedral LaAlO3 substrates using a high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction three dimensional-reciprocal space mapping (3D-RSM) technique. The results revealed significant biaxial, anisotropic, evolution behaviors of the mixed-phase (MC + R′/T′ phases) BiFeO3 ferroelectric domains along the in-plane [100] and [010] axes. These biaxial, anisotropic, evolution behaviors were attributed to the shear-strain-modulated transition pathways of the mixed-phase ferroelectric domains. This viewpoint was further verified in the BiFeO3/LaSrAlO4 (001) system in which no anisotropic evolution behaviors of the mixed-phase domains were found. This work sheds light on the quantitative analysis of domain evolution in multi-domain systems and demonstrates that the shear-strain effect could act as an effective tool to manipulate the domain behavior and control novel functionalities of ferroelectric thin films.

Perovskite oxide superlattices are of particular interest due to novel phenomena emerging at interfaces which are beyond the bulk properties of the constituent layers. However, building perovskite superlattices comprised of stoichiometric layers with sharp interfaces has proven challenging. Here, the synthesis of a series of high quality (SrTiO3)n/(CaTiO3)n superlattice structures grown on LSAT substrates is demonstrated by employing hybrid molecular beam epitaxy, where Ti was supplied using metal-organic titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP), and Sr and Ca were supplied using conventional effusion cells. By careful adjustment of the cation fluxes of Sr and Ca with respect to the TTIP flux, the growth windows of SrTiO3 and CaTiO3 were overlapped, allowing us to grow the individual superlattice layers with self-regulated stoichiometry. Stable and repeatable reflection high-energy electron diffraction oscillations during the entire ∼2.5 h growth period indicated good source flux stability. The structural quality of the superlattice films were determined by scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, revealing periodic, phase pure, homogenous superlattice structures with abrupt interfaces. Utilization of perovskite stoichiometric growth windows offers great potential for accessing and realizing interface driven phenomena in versatile perovskite superlattice materials with chemistries beyond titanates.

The effect of gate voltage polarity on the behavior of NdNiO3 epitaxial thin films during ionic liquid gating is studied using in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques. We show that while negative biases have no discernible effect on the structure or composition of the films, large positive gate voltages result in the injection of a large concentration of oxygen vacancies (∼3%) and pronounced lattice expansion (0.17%) in addition to a 1000-fold increase in sheet resistance at room temperature. Despite the creation of large defect densities, the heterostructures exhibit a largely reversible switching behavior when sufficient time is provided for the vacancies to migrate in and out of the thin film surface. The results confirm that electrostatic gating takes place at negative gate voltages for p-type complex oxides while positive voltages favor the electrochemical reduction of Ni3+. Switching between positive and negative gate voltages therefore involves a combination of electronic and ionic doping processes that may be utilized in future electrochemical transistors.

We studied using organic liquids (cyclohexane, n-butanol, and ethylene glycol) to modulate the transport properties at room temperature of an epitaxial VO2 film on a VO2/Al2O3 heterostructure. The resistance of the VO2 film increased when coated with cyclohexane or n-butanol, with maximum changes of 31% and 3.8%, respectively. In contrast, it decreased when coated with ethylene glycol, with a maximum change of −7.7%. In all cases, the resistance recovered to its original value after removing the organic liquid. This organic-liquid-induced reversible resistance switching suggests that VO2 films can be used as organic molecular sensors.

Large scale electronic phase separation (EPS) between ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered insulating phases in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y = 0.3) (LPCMO) is very sensitive to the structural changes. This work investigates the effects of post-annealing on the strain states and electrical transport properties of LPCMO films epitaxially grown on (001)pc SrTiO3 (tensile strain), LaAlO3 (compressive strain) and NdGaO3 (near-zero strain) substrates. Before annealing, all the films are coherent-epitaxial and insulating through the measured temperature range. Obvious change of film lattice is observed during the post-annealing: the in-plane strain in LPCMO/LAO varies from −1.5% to −0.1% while that in LPCMO/STO changes from 1.6% to 1.3%, and the lattice of LPCMO/NGO keeps constant because of the good lattice-match between LPCMO and NGO. Consequently, the varied film strain leads to the emergence of metal-insulator transitions (MIT) and shift of the critical transition temperature in the electrical transport. These results demonstrate that lattice-mismatch combined with post-annealing is an effective approach to tune strain in epitaxial LPCMO films, and thus to control the EPS and MIT in the films.
