This study investigated the improvement in the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties obtained by adjusting the amount of the Sr addition to the Al-Zn-Mg-Mn alloy. The addition of Sr formed an intermetallic compounds, and the volume fraction of the intermetallic compounds increased with increasing Sr content. As the amount of Sr added increased from 0 to 1.0 wt%, the electrical conductivity of the extruded alloy decreased to 48.9, 45.2 and 42.5% IACS. As the addition amount of Sr increased, the average grain size of the rolled alloy decreased to 55.5, 53.1 and 42.3 μm. And, the ultimate tensile strength increased to 195, 212 and 216 MPa.

In this study, the effects of heat-treatment conditions of Fe powder compacts on densification, microstructure, strength and magnetic properties were investigated. The prepared Fe powder was compressed in a mold of diameter 20 mm at a pressure of 800 MPa for 30 sec. This Fe powder compact was heat-treated under different atmospheres (air and 90% Ar + 10% H2 and heat-treatment temperatures (300 and 700℃). The Fe powder compacts heat-treated in an Ar+H2 mixed gas atmosphere showed a denser microstructure and higher density than the Fe powder compacts heat-treated in an air atmosphere. Oxygen content in the heat-treatment conditions played a significant role in the improvement of the densification and magnetic properties.

This research describes effects of Si addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al-Cr based alloys prepared manufactured using gas atomization and SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) processes. The Al-Cr-Si bulks with high Cr and Si content were produced successfully using SPS sintering process without crack and obtained fully dense specimens close to nearly 100% T. D. (Theoretical Density). Microstructure of the as-atomized Al-Cr-Si alloys with high contents of Cr and Si was composed multi-phases with hard and thermally stable such as Al13Cr4Si4, AlCrSi, Al8Cr5 and Cr3Si intermetallic compounds. The average hardness values were 703 Hv for S5, 698 Hv for S10 and 824 Hv for S20 alloy. Enhancement of hardness value was resulted from the formation of the multi-intermetallic compound with hard and thermally stable and fine microstructure by the addition of high Cr and Si using rapid solidification and SPS process.

In this study, we investigated the effect of Fe addition (0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 wt.%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Al-RE alloys. As the Fe element increased by 0 and 0.75wt.%, the phase fraction increased to 5.05, 5.76, 7.14 and 7.38 %. The increased intermetallic compound increased the driving force for recrystallization and grain refinement. The electrical conductivity of Al-1.0 wt.%RE alloy with Fe addition decreased to 60.29, 60.15, 59.58 and 59.13 %IACS. With an increase in the Fe content from 0 to 0.75 wt.% the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the alloy increased from 74.3 to 77.5 MPa. As the mechanical properties increase compared to the reduction of the electrical conductivity due to Fe element addition, it is considered to be suitable for fields requiring high electrical conductivity and strength.

This paper describes an imputation model that uses the multiple regression to accurately estimate average roadway link travel speeds for the incident detection algorithm and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This model predicts link travel speeds using a robust data imputation method based on available information for neighbor links and the adjacent time periods. A field test showed that the variance of the percent errors of link travel speeds was reduced when they were measured using the new model. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed model significantly improves the accuracy of travel speed measurement

The transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) ion channel plays an important role in the peripheral nociceptive pathway. TRPV1 is a polymodal receptor that can be activated by multiple types of ligands and painful stimuli, such as noxious heat and protons, and contributes to various acute and chronic pain conditions. Therefore, TRPV1 is emerging as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of various pain conditions. Notably, various peptides isolated from venomous animals potently and selectively control the activation and inhibition of TRPV1 by binding to its outer pore region. This review will focus on the mechanisms by which venom-derived peptides interact with this portion of TRPV1 to control receptor functions and how these mechanisms can drive the development of new types of analgesics.

A polypyrrole-modified Fe _3 O _4 /SiO _2 /TiO _2 composite material was successfully synthesized on the FST surface by in situ polymerization of pyrrole. Structural, morphological and magnetic response of Fe _3 O _4 /SiO _2 /TiO _2 /PPy(FST/PPy) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, etc. Through SEM images, the crystal sizes of the prepared FST/PPy nanoparticles were determined to be about 110 nm. The catalytic activity of FST/PPy was evaluated by the degree of decomposition of rhodamine B under ultraviolet and visible light, respectively. FST/PPy had the photocatalytic activity under the action of the light: the degradation rate of rhodamine B reached 92.8% and 63.5% after 3 h of UV and Vis light irradiation, respectively. Especially, compared with FST, the degradation rate has shown obvious improvement under the action of Vis light. Furthermore, FST/PPy photocatalyst could be easily recycled using a magnet.

Fraxinus rhynchophylla, common name ash, belongs to the family Oleaceae and is found in China, Korea, North America, the Indian subcontinent, and eastern Russia. It has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in Korea and various parts of the world due to its chemical constituents. During a field survey in March 2019, mild vein thickening (almost negligible) was observed in a few ash trees. High-throughput sequencing of libraries of total DNA from ash trees, rolling-circle amplification (RCA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) allowed the identification of a Fraxinus symptomless virus. This virus has five confirmed open reading frames along with a possible sixth open reading frame that encodes the movement protein and is almost 2.7 kb in size, with a nonanucleotide and stem loop structure identical to begomoviruses. In terms of its size and structure, this virus strongly resembles begomoviruses, but does not show any significant sequence identity with them. To confirm movement of the virus within the trees, different parts of infected trees were examined, and viral movement was successfully observed. No satellite molecules or DNA B were identified. Two-step PCR confirmed the virion and complementary strands during replication in both freshly collected infected samples of ash tree and Nicotiana benthamiana samples agro-inoculated with infectious clones. This taxon is so distantly grouped from other known geminiviruses that it likely represents a new geminivirus genus.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a complex, debilitating, chronic pain state, heterogeneous in nature and caused by a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system. Its pathogenesis involves a wide range of molecular pathways. NP treatment is extremely challenging, due to its complex underlying disease mechanisms. Current pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches can provide long-lasting pain relief to a limited percentage of patients and lack safe and effective treatment options. Therefore, scientists are focusing on the introduction of novel treatment approaches, such as stem cell therapy. A growing number of reports have highlighted the potential of stem cells for treating NP. In this review, we briefly introduce NP, current pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments, and preclinical studies of stem cells to treat NP. In addition, we summarize stem cell mechanisms—including neuromodulation in treating NP. Literature searches were conducted using PubMed to provide an overview of the neuroprotective effects of stem cells with particular emphasis on recent translational research regarding stem cell-based treatment of NP, highlighting its potential as a novel therapeutic approach.

Cigarette butts are one of the toxic residues and have a very serious impact on the environment. Recycling cigarette butts has a great advantage in saving the natural source and solving environmental problems. Cellulose diacetate obtained from extraction, purification and acid hydrolysis of cigarette butts and then was blended with low molecular weight partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol. The blend of cellulose diacetate and partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. To evaluate the viscoelastic properties of the blends dynamic mechanical analysis was performed. The lap shear strength and the 180° peel strength of the adhesive were estimated according to the content of the blends and the biodegradability in water was confirmed. The experimental results showed that the use of cellulose diacetate obtained from cigarette butts in the composition of biodegradable hot melt adhesives can be of great help in solving environmental problems caused by petroleum-based polymers and waste.

Partially saponified low molecular weight (LMW) PVAc was synthesized and blended with a tackifier for use as hot-melt adhesive with water-solubility and biodegradibility. The water-solubility of the partially saponified LMW PVAc was determined as a function of the degree of saponification. PVAc prepared in this study had good water-solubility because its molecular weight was very small and it had lots of hydroxy groups in the polymer chain. As the degree of saponification increased, the solubility of PVAc in water increased. The glass transition temperature and viscoelastic properties of partially saponified PVAc were measured and analyzed by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). As the temperature increased and the degree of saponification decreased, melt viscosity decreased. The single lap-shear strength and biodegradability of the hot-melt adhesive on based PVAc were systematically evaluated. As the degree of saponification of the polymer increased, the single lap-shear strength of the hot-melt adhesive and the tendency for cohesive failure to occur decreased. The higher the degree of saponification, the faster the rate of biodegradation of the adhesive in natural water.

Perioperative ischemic stroke is an uncommon event associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The complexity of the surgical procedure and surgery induced hypercoagulable status also influence the incidence of stroke. The management of stroke involves a decision regarding the quickest suitable revascularization method. Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy, such as intra-arterial mechanical thrombectomy (IAMT), can restore vascular patency of the vessels, providing an alternative or synergistic method to restore blood flow. Although, there are no recommended treatment guidelines, IAMT is eligible to be a treatment of choice for perioperative ischemic stroke. We experienced a case of a patient who demonstrated hemiplegia and aphasia, the early symptom of acute ischemic stroke, in the post-anesthesia care unit and performed IAMT successfully. Thus we report the case with a review of the relevant literature.

In this research, various processing conditions were implemented to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys. The silicon content was varied from hypoeutectic (Si-10 wt.%) to eutectic (Si-12.6 wt.%) and hypereutectic (Si-14 wt.%) for the preparation of Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6 Mg (X = 10⁻14%) alloys using die casting. Subsequently, these alloys were hot-extruded with an optimum extrusion ratio (17:1) at 400 °C to match the output extruded bar to the compressor size. An analysis of the microstructural features along with a chemical compositional analysis were carried out using scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope. The SEM micrographs of the extruded samples displayed cracks in primary Si, and the intermetallic (β-Al5FeSi) phase was fragmented accordingly. In addition, the silicon phase was homogenously distributed, and the size remained constant. The mechanical properties of the extruded samples were enhanced by the increase of silicon content, and consequently the ductility decreased. By implementing proper T6 heat treatment parameters, coherent Al2Cu phases were formed in the Al matrix, and the Si phase was gradually increased along with the silicon content. Therefore, high tensile strength was achieved, reaching values for the Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6Mg (X = 10⁻14%) alloys of 366 MPa, 388 MPa, and 420 MPa, respectively.

The proliferation, differentiation, and migration of keratinocytes are essential in the early stages of wound healing. Hypoxia-Reoxygenation (H/R) injury to keratinocytes can occur in various stressful environments such as surgery, trauma, and various forms of ulcers. The effects of remifentanil on human keratinocytes under hypoxia-reoxygenation have not been fully studied. Therefore, we investigated the effects of remifentanil on the proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagic activation of human keratinocytes during hypoxic-reoxygenation. Human keratinocytes were cultured under 1% oxygen tension for 24 h. The cells were then treated with various concentrations of remifentanil (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 ng/mL) for 2 h. Thereafter, the cells were reoxygenated for 12 h at 37°C. We measured cell viability via MTT assay. Using quantitative real-time PCR and western blot analysis, we measured the expression levels of proteins associated with apoptosis and autophagy. Quantification of apoptotic cells was performed using flow cytometer analysis and autophagic vacuoles were observed under a fluorescence microscope. Remifentanil treatment brought about an increase in the proliferation of human keratinocytes damaged by hypoxia-reoxygenation and decreased the apoptotic cell death, enhancing autophagic activity. However, the autophagy pathway inhibitor 3-MA inhibited the protective effect of remifentanil in hypoxia-reoxygenation injury. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that remifentanil treatment stimulated autophagy and reduced apoptotic cell death in a hypoxia-reoxygenation model of human keratinocytes. Our results provide additional insights into the relationship between apoptosis and autophagy.

The detection of jovian hydrogen-hydrogen dimers through the clear telluric 2-micron window(Kim et al. 1995, Trafton et al. 1997) suggests possibility to detect noble gases in the form of dimer with hydrogen in jovian atmospheres. Since noble gases do not have spectral structures in the infrared, it has been difficult to derive their abundances in the atmospheres of jovian planets. If there is a significant component of noble gases other than helium in the jovian atmospheres. it might be detected through its dimer spectrum with hydrogen molecule. The relatively sharp spectral structures of hydrogen-argon and hydrogen-neon dimers compared with those of hydrogen-hydrogen dimers are useful for the detection, if an adequate signal-to-noise (S/N) is obtained. If we use a large telescope, such as the Keck telescope, with a long exposure time (>24 hours), then H2-Ar spectral structure may be detected.

The transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel plays a pivotal role in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Within the respiratory system, TRPA1 exhibits diverse distribution patterns across key cell types, including epithelial cells, sensory nerves, and immune cells. Its activation serves as a frontline sensor for inhaled irritants, triggering immediate protective responses, and influencing airway integrity. Furthermore, TRPA1 has been implicated in airway tissue injury, inflammation, and the transition of fibroblasts, thereby posing challenges in conditions, such as severe asthma and fibrosis. In sensory nerves, TRPA1 contributes to nociception, the cough reflex, and bronchoconstriction, highlighting its role in both immediate defense mechanisms and long-term respiratory reflex arcs. In immune cells, TRPA1 may modulate the release of pro-inflammatory mediators, shaping the overall inflammatory landscape. In the gastrointestinal tract, the dynamic expression of TRPA1 in enteric neurons, epithelial cells, and immune cells underscores its multifaceted involvement. It plays a crucial role in gut motility, visceral pain perception, and mucosal defense mechanisms. Dysregulation of TRPA1 in both tracts is associated with various disorders such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This review emphasizes the potential of TRPA1 as a therapeutic target and discusses the efficacy of TRPA1 antagonists in preclinical studies and their promise for addressing respiratory and gastrointestinal conditions. Understanding the intricate interactions and cross-talk of TRPA1 across different cell types provides insight into its versatile role in maintaining homeostasis in vital physiological systems, offering a foundation for targeted therapeutic interventions. Introduction: Wildfires are a threat to public health world-wide that are growing in intensity and prevalence. The biological mechanisms that elicit wildfire-associated toxicity remain largely unknown. The potential involvement of cross-tissue communication via extracellular vesicles (EVs) is a new mechanism that has yet to be evaluated. Methods: Female CD-1 mice were exposed to smoke condensate samples collected from the following biomass burn scenarios: flaming peat; smoldering peat; flaming red oak; and smoldering red oak, representing lab-based simulations of wildfire scenarios. Lung tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples, peripheral blood, and heart tissues were collected 4 and 24 h post-exposure. Exosome-enriched EVs were isolated from plasma, physically characterized, and profiled for microRNA (miRNA) expression. Pathway-level responses in the lung and heart were evaluated through RNA sequencing and pathway analyses. Results: Markers of cardiopulmonary tissue injury and inflammation from BALF samples were significantly altered in response to exposures, with the greatest changes occurring from flaming biomass conditions. Plasma EV miRNAs relevant to cardiovascular disease showed exposure-induced expression alterations, including miR-150, miR-183, miR-223-3p, miR-30b, and miR-378a. Lung and heart mRNAs were identified with differential expression enriched for hypoxia and cell stress-related pathways. Flaming red oak exposure induced the greatest transcriptional response in the heart, a large portion of which were predicted as regulated by plasma EV miRNAs, including miRNAs known to regulate hypoxia-induced cardiovascular injury. Many of these miRNAs had published evidence supporting their transfer across tissues. A follow-up analysis of miR-30b showed that it was increased in expression in the heart of exposed mice in the absence of changes to its precursor molecular, pri-miR-30b, suggesting potential transfer from external sources (e.g., plasma). Discussion: This study posits a potential mechanism through which wildfire exposures induce cardiopulmonary responses, highlighting the role of circulating plasma EVs in intercellular and systems-level communication between tissues.

The ocular surface is continuously exposed to various environmental factors, and innate and adaptive immunity play crucial roles in ocular surface diseases (OSDs). Previously, we have reported that the topical application of RCI001 affords excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in dry eye disease and ocular chemical burn models. In this study, we examined the inhibitory effects of RCI001 on the Rac1 and NLRP3 inflammasomes in vitro and in vivo. Following RCI001 application to RAW264.7 and Swiss 3T3 cells, we measured Rac1 activity using a glutathione-S-transferase (GST) pull-down assay and G-protein activation assay kit. In addition, we quantified the expression of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells using ELISA and real-time PCR. In the mouse ocular alkali burn model, RCI001 was administered via eye drops (10 mg/mL, twice daily) for 5 days, and 1% prednisolone acetate (PDE) ophthalmic suspension was used as a positive control. Corneal epithelial integrity (on days 0-5) and histological examinations were performed, and transcript and protein levels of Rac1, NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1β were quantified using real-time PCR and western blotting in corneal tissues collected on days 3 and 5. We observed that RCI001 dose-dependently inhibited Rac1 activity and various inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated murine macrophages. Furthermore, RCI001 restored corneal epithelial integrity more rapidly than corticosteroid treatment in chemically injured corneas. Compared to the saline group, activation of Rac1 and the NLRP3 inflammasome/IL-1β axis was suppressed in the RCI001 group, especially during the early phase of the ocular alkali burn model. Topical RCI001 suppressed the expression of activated Rac1 and inflammatory cytokines in vitro and rapidly restored the injured cornea by inhibiting activation of Rac1 and the NLRP inflammasome/IL-1β axis in vivo. Accordingly, RCI001 could be a promising therapeutic agent for treating OSDs.

Study Design: Retrospective case-control study. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of thrombin-containing local hemostatics (TCLH) on postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (POSEH) in biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS). This study compared the incidence of morphometric and symptomatic POSEH with or without TCLH in BESS. Overview of Literature: POSEH is reported not uncommon in BESS when compared with conventional spine surgery (CSS). TCLH achieves hemostasis with a high success rate in CSS. However, few studies have examined the effect of TCLH on BESS. Methods: Patients with and without TCLH were assigned to groups A and B, respectively. POSEH between the two groups was compared morphometrically and symptomatically. The risk factors for symptomatic and morphometric POSEH in BESS were identified. Results: The morphometric POSEH was greater in group B, and the difference was significant (p =0.019). The incidence of symptomatic POSEH was lower in group A with 4.6% (5/109) than in group B with 9.5% (9/95); however, the rate was not significantly different (p =0.136). The morphometric POSEH was classified into two small (hG1 and hG2) and large (hG3 and hG4) and were compared between groups A and B, and the difference was significant (p =0.02). In the multivariable logistic regression, nonuse of TCLH (p =0.004) and preoperative diagnosis of stenosis (p =0.016) were variables found to be significant risk factors of morphometric POSEH. Conclusions: Severe compression of the thecal sac by POSEH is more common in patients without TCLH. The risk of hematoma formation was higher when bilateral decompression was needed and the cut bone surface was more exposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuropathic pain caused by lesions or nervous system dysfunction is a neuroimmune disease with limited therapeutic options. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) are multipotent mesenchymal stem cells with potent immunosuppressive properties, and their use as novel cell-based therapeutics have been proposed in many immune diseases. However, the analgesic effect and efficacy of ASCs to treat neuropathic pain remain unclear. This study, thus, investigated whether ASCs or ASC-derived culture medium can relieve neuropathic pain behaviors (i.e., mechanical and cold allodynia) in a rat model with L5 spinal nerve ligation. Intrathecal injection of ASCs significantly reduced cold allodynia, but not mechanical allodynia. Importantly, cold allodynia was completely reversed in rats with repeated injections of ASCs. In contrast, intrathecal injection of ASC-derived culture medium or retro-orbital injection of ASCs had no effect on neuropathic pain behaviors. These results suggest a novel and alternative therapeutic application of ASCs to target specific neuropathic pain behaviors.
