AbstractThe wandering activity (ngoker lange) has been undertaken in the past and continues to be practiced even today by Baweanese people, both for economic and religious purposes. Through the ngoker lange tradition, the practice of Sufi order(tarekat), spread to Singapore. This article aims to analyze how the diasporic tradition of Bawean people contributed to the the development of the tarekat institution named Tarekat Qadiriyah wan Naqsyabandiyah (TQN) in Singapore. In this study, I employed an interdisciplinary method that utilizes a historical and cultural approach. Data are collected through literature research, direct observations, and interviews with Bawean people in the island and Singapore. This study found that the Bawean diaspora played an important role in spreading tarekat in Singapore. Kiai Usman Al-Ishaqy (1915-1984) and Kiai Mohd Hassan Ash’ari bin Mustafa al-Bakri (1921-2007) were the famous personalities who were instrumental in developing tarekat in Singapore.

Tracheobronchopathia osteoplastica (TO) is a rare benign disease in which the anterior inner wall of the tracheobronchus changes because of abnormal chondrogenesis or ossification, while the posterior wall of the trachea is spared. The etiology is not clearly understood, but may relate with chronic infection, inflammation, and trauma. In some case studies, it has also been reported to be accompanied by other chronic diseases such as atrophic rhinitis and amyloidosis. However, Coexistence of TO and tuberculosis has rarely been reported, and has never been reported in Korea. Here, we report a case of a 70-year-old male patient who complained of hemoptysis and whose case was diagnosed as TO and pulmonary tuberculosis through bronchoscopy with bronchial washing and biopsy.

This article studies the role of women of the Tablighi Jamaat, a transnational Islamic propagation movement, in the process of Islamic propagation (da’wah) in Indonesia. It aims to analyze the role played by female followers of Tablighi Jamaat in developing da’wah by focusing on the role of nyai (female family members of a religious leader of traditional Islamic learning institution [pesantren]) in developing masturah da’wah in Pesantren Al-Fatah and Temboro Village. This study uses a qualitative approach to understand how nyai of Pesantren Al-Fatah were involved in da’wah activities in Temboro. The required data were collected through observation and interviews. The findings show that like their spouses who were obliged to go for da’wah in the form of khuruj, female followers of Tablighi Jamaat of Pesantren Temboro were assigned to conduct da’wah through masturah, a form of Islamic propagation which was only targeted on, organized and attended by the women of Tablighi Jamaah in Temboro with strict rules such the obligation of wearing face veils for all participants. Nyai of Pesantren Al-Fatah initiated, led, and developed masturah so that Tablighi Jamaat has attracted more followers and religious students and Temboro has experienced significant changes in social, religious, and economic aspects.

Selda Keskin Güler,1 Sertac Güler,2 Burcu Gökçe Çokal,1 Nalan Gunes,1 Mehmet İlker Yon,1 Tahir Kurtulus Yoldas1 1Department of Neurology, 2Department of Emergency Medicine, Ankara Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate the reliability of the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) in Turkish patients with epilepsy (PWE) and to determine the effects of earthquake experience on the perception of disease in patients.Materials and methods: The sample was composed of 48 PWE, who were affected by the 2011 earthquake (n=21) or who had never had any earthquake experience (n=27). The interview form, IPQ-R, and Beck Depression Scale (BDS) were applied.Results: The study was carried out on PWE whose mean age was 20.9 years (±8.1 years) and who had been diagnosed within the last 10 years (±6.9 years). IPQ-R consisted of three parts: illness identity, attributions concerning the disease, and probable causes. In the part of illness identity, the most frequently met manifestations were fatigue (76.6%) and headache (72.9%). Regarding attributions concerning the disease and probable causes, the test was determined to be reliable (reliability coefficient 0.715–0.814). In terms of personal control, timeline (acute/chronic), emotional representations, illness coherence, consequences, treatment control, and timeline subscales, which were investigated at the dimension about attributions concerning the disease, and psychological causal attributions, risk factors, and immunity subscales, which were investigated at the dimension about probable causes, no significant differences were found between groups (P>0.05). No difference was determined in terms of BDS scores (z=−0.895, P>0.05).Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that IPQ-R could be used reliably in the Turkish PWE. A severe life event such as an earthquake did not change IPQ-R scores in PWE. Keywords: epilepsy, Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire, earthquake

Adenoviruses (family Adenoviridae) infect various organ systems and cause diseases in a wide range of host species. In this study, we examined multiple tissues from Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica), collected in Antarctica during 2009 and 2010, for the presence of novel adenoviruses by PCR. Analysis of a 855-bp region of the hexon gene of a newly identified adenovirus, designated Chinstrap penguin adenovirus 1 (CSPAdV-1), showed nucleotide (amino acid) sequence identity of 71.8% (65.5%) with South Polar skua 1 (SPSAdV-1), 71% (70%) with raptor adenovirus 1 (RAdV-1), 71.4% (67.6%) with turkey adenovirus 3 (TAdV-3) and 61% (61.6%) with frog adenovirus 1 (FrAdV-1). Based on the genetic and phylogenetic analyses, CSPAdV-1 was classified as a member of the genus, Siadenovirus. Virus isolation attempts from kidney homogenates in the MDTC-RP19 (ATCC® CRL-8135™) cell line were unsuccessful. In conclusion, this study provides the first evidence of new adenovirus species in Antarctic penguins.

Indonesia is certainly the world's largest Muslim country. Its big population however is not capable of offering a big contribution for the world. Indonesia was a major player on the world stage politically and intellectually. But that role has disappeared with the disappearance of Indonesia’s most vibrant minds. This paper tries to exploit the rise and the fall of Indonesian role on the international stage particularly by looking at the presence of the Indonesian workers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and how the Saudis perceive these workers. The paper argues that there is an observable development in the way Indonesia and its people have been perceived in this particular part of the world. In the past, they were respected as intellectuals while at the present they are humiliated as domestic workers. This paper analyzes this setback in the Indonesian role and with it the changing perceptions of the Saudis in particular and the Arabs in general concerning Indonesians in the Middle East. At the end, the paper is concerned with showing how that low perception affects the relation between Indonesia and the Arab countries.

To an extent never seen before, following the collapse of the Soeharto regime in 1998 Islamist groups in Indonesia began to express themselves vocally and expli­citly. Islamic discourse has developed apace, ranging from demands that the state lift the ban on the role of Islamic ideology in political parties and mass organizations to accommodate Muslim interests up to calls for the imple­men­tation of Islamic shari`ah to replace the so-called secular laws of state. These recent phenomena indicate the emergence of new santris (devout Muslims) differing from their own parents and the older generation in terms of political orientation, religious ideology, and attitude towards inherited traditions. These new types of santri are not only influenced by the local and changing dynamics of Indonesian politics, society and culture but they are also subject to international influences in Islam. Within Indonesia, some of them retain their links with traditionalist or modernist groups, some others keep their distance from them and yet still others show radical orientations. They have become very influential within certain sections of Indonesian society and have gained attention from many observers and researchers.

A pesantren is a typical component of the Indonesian cultural heritage. Besides being thought of as one of the oldest type of educational institutions in Indonesia, pesantren have played a significant contributing role in the process of nation building in modern Indonesia. Pesantren have many roles in society in education, the economy and in the social and political fields in which pesantren alumni play a role. Currently, pesantren roles are being challenged by modernization and they have to change or transform into modern institutions in order to survive. Nevertheless, traditional pesantren continue to resists change and they insist on preserving their identity in terms of authority and student teacher relationships. This article seeks to analyse the efforts that the traditional Pesantren Cidahu in Banten makes to preserve its identity and to maintain its authority in modern society. By hanging on to modest practices, Pesantren Cidahu manages to continue to exert strong influence over its students and over the society in West Java in general.

Massively multidimensional diffusion magnetic resonance imaging combines tensor-valued encoding, oscillating gradients, and diffusion-relaxation correlation to provide multicomponent subvoxel parameters depicting some tissue microstructural features. This method was successfully implemented ex vivo in microimaging systems and clinical conditions with tensor-valued gradient waveform of variable duration giving access to a narrow diffusion frequency (ω) range. We demonstrate here its preclinical in vivo implementation with a protocol of 389 contrast images probing a wide diffusion frequency range of 18 to 92 Hz at b-values up to 2.1 ms/μm 2 enabled by the use of modulated gradient waveforms and combined with multislice high-resolution and low-distortion echo planar imaging acquisition with segmented and full reversed phase-encode acquisition. This framework allows the identification of diffusion ω-dependence in the rat cerebellum and olfactory bulb gray matter (GM), and the parameter distributions are shown to resolve two water pools in the cerebellum GM with different diffusion coefficients, shapes, ω-dependence, relaxation rates, and spatial repartition whose attribution to specific microstructure could modify the current understanding of the origin of restriction in GM., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

The growing demand of novel hybrid organic/inorganic systems with exciting properties has contributed to an increasing need for simplifying production strategies. Here, we report a simple method to obtain controlled three-dimensional hybrid architectures, in particular hybrid supracolloids (hSC), formed by gold nanoparticles and a double hydrophilic block copolymer, specifically the poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP), directly in aqueous medium. The ubiquitous pH-sensitive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) block initiates the assembly through pH changes, while the poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) block assures the close affinity with the AuNPs. We demonstrate that the formation of hybrid supracolloids (hSC) is the result of the synergetic behavior of the two specific polymeric blocks. Additionally, the entire process shows spontaneous and fast switchability. The nanostructured copolymer behaves like a highly swollen hydrogel and displays a disordered internal structure. The driving force for the association of the copolymer chains is induced by the synergetic effects of the decrease in solubility of the poly(acrylic acid) block and the formation of inter and intra chains hydrogen bonds. These were demonstrated by using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX). In turn, the AuNPs are randomly spread all over the polymeric matrix, as demonstrated by field emission gun - scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). A correlation analysis reveals the hSC density depends mostly on the initial concentration of AuNPs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for noninvasive studies of micrometer-scale structures in biological tissues via their effects on the time- and frequency-dependent (restricted) and anisotropic self-diffusion of water. While new designs of time-dependent magnetic field gradient waveforms have enabled disambiguation between different aspects of translational motion that are convolved in traditional MRI methods relying on single pairs of field gradient pulses, data analysis for complex heterogeneous materials remains a challenge. Here, we propose and demonstrate nonparametric distributions of tensor-valued Lorentzian diffusion spectra, or "D(ω) distributions," as a general representation with sufficient flexibility to describe the MRI signal response from a wide range of model systems and biological tissues investigated with modulated gradient waveforms separating and correlating the effects of restricted and anisotropic diffusion., (© 2024 Author(s). Lanthanide-based macrocycles are successfully incorporated into hybrid polyionic complexes, formed by adding a mixture of zirconium ions to a solution of a double-hydrophilic block copolymer. The resulting nanoobjects with an average radius of approximately 10-15 nm present good colloidal and chemical stability in physiological media even in the presence of competing ions such as phosphate or calcium ions. The final optical and magnetic properties of these objects benefit from both their colloidal nature and the specific properties of the complexes. Hence these new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when administered intravenously to mice.

Background: While the microstructure of the left ventricle (LV) has been largely described, only a few studies investigated the right ventricular insertion point (RVIP). It was accepted that the aggregate cardiomyocytes organization was much more complex due to the intersection of the ventricular cavities but a precise structural characterization in the human heart was lacking even if clinical phenotypes related to right ventricular wall stress or arrhythmia were observed in this region., Methods: MRI-derived anatomical imaging (150 µm 3 ) and diffusion tensor imaging (600 µm 3 ) were performed in large mammalian whole hearts (human: N = 5, sheep: N = 5). Fractional anisotropy, aggregate cardiomyocytes orientations and tractography were compared within both species. Aggregate cardiomyocytes orientation on one ex-vivo sheep whole heart was then computed using structure tensor imaging (STI) from 21 µm isotropic acquisition acquired with micro computed tomography (MicroCT) imaging. Macroscopic and histological examination were performed. Lastly, experimental cardiomyocytes orientation distribution was then compared to the usual rule-based model using electrophysiological (EP) modeling. Electrical activity was modeled with the monodomain formulation., Results: The RVIP at the level of the inferior ventricular septum presented a unique arrangement of aggregate cardiomyocytes. An abrupt, mid-myocardial change in cardiomyocytes orientation was observed, delimiting a triangle-shaped region, present in both sheep and human hearts. FA's histogram distribution (mean ± std: 0.29 ± 0.06) of the identified region as well as the main dimension (22.2 mm ± 5.6 mm) was found homogeneous across samples and species. Averaged volume is 0.34 cm 3  ± 0.15 cm 3 . Both local activation time (LAT) and morphology of pseudo-ECGs were strongly impacted with delayed LAT and change in peak-to-peak amplitude in the simulated wedge model., Conclusion: The study was the first to describe the 3D cardiomyocytes architecture of the basal inferoseptal left ventricle region in human hearts and identify the presence of a well-organized aggregate cardiomyocytes arrangement and cardiac structural discontinuities. The results might offer a better appreciation of clinical phenotypes like RVIP-late gadolinium enhancement or uncommon idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias (VA) originating from this region., (© 2023. Background: High density lipoprotein (HDL) is well established to have an athero-protective role under normal conditions; however, pro-inflammatory alteration of HDL proteins may transform the HDL particle into a dysfunctional molecule. Our aim was to investigate HDL dysfunction by measuring enzyme-based markers in carotid artery stenosis (CAS). Patients and methods: All participants underwent duplex ultrasound and 52 subjects diagnosed with CAS and 51 subjects who had no significant stenosis (as controls) were enrolled in this study. Serum lipid profiles and serum parameters associated with dysfunctional HDL including myeloperoxidase (MPO), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), arylesterase (ARE) activity, and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels were measured. Results: It was found that the patients with CAS had increased levels of MPO and LOOH while PON1 activity was decreased. There was no significant difference between the CAS and non-CAS groups in terms of HDL levels. MPO/PON1, MPO/ARE, and LOOH/PON1 ratios were significantly increased in the CAS group. MPO/PON1 and MPO/ARE ratios both demonstrated significant correlations with degree of stenosis (%). Conclusions: The MPO/PON1 and MPO/ARE ratios may be potential serum markers that can enable the monitoring of HDL functionality and the assessment of atherosclerotic disease risks. Additionally, monitoring the oxidative balance of lipids on HDL molecules by LOOH/PON1 ratio may have value in the early detection of pro-atherosclerotic transformation of the HDL particle.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infects many mammals, and SARS-CoV-2 circulation in nonhuman animals may increase the risk of novel variant emergence. Cats are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and there were cases of virus transmission between cats and humans. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 variant infection of cats in an urban setting. We investigated the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 variant infections in domestic and community cats in the city of Pittsburgh ( n = 272). While no cats tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA, 35 cats (12.86%) tested SARS-CoV-2-antibody-positive. Further, we compared a cat-specific experimental lateral flow assay (eLFA) and species-agnostic surrogate virus neutralization assay (sVNT) for SARS-CoV-2 antibody detection in cats ( n = 71). The eLFA demonstrated 100% specificity compared to sVNT. The eLFA also showed 100% sensitivity for sera with >90% inhibition and 63.63% sensitivity for sera with 40-89% inhibition in sVNT. Using a variant-specific pseudovirus neutralization assay (pVNT) and antigen cartography, we found the presence of antibodies to pre-Omicron and Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants. Hence, this approach proves valuable in identifying cat exposure to different SARS-CoV-2 variants. Our results highlight the continued exposure of cats to SARS-CoV-2 and warrant coordinated surveillance efforts.
