It is expected that cosmic rays (CRs) escape from high-redshift galaxies at redshift $z\sim 10 \, - \, 20$ because CRs are accelerated by supernova remnants of the first stars. Although ultraviolet and X-ray photons are widely considered the main source of heating of the intergalactic medium, CRs can also contribute to it. When the CRs propagate in the intergalactic medium, in addition to the heating process due to CR ionization, resistive heating occurs due to the electron return current induced by the streaming CRs. We evaluate the heating rate around a galaxy as a function of the distance from the galaxy. We find that the resistive heating induced by CRs dominates over the other heating processes in the vicinity of the galaxy $r \lesssim 10^2 \, \mathrm{kpc}$ until the temperature reaches $T\sim 10^4 \, \mathrm{K}$. We also recalculate the strength of the magnetic field generated by streaming CRs under the presence of X-ray heating and show that achieved strength can be about $1$ order of magnitude smaller when the X-ray heating is included. The presence of the "first" CRs could be confirmed from the characteristic signature of CR heating imprinted on the $21$-$\mathrm{cm}$ line map in future radio observations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Quantum detector tomography (QDT) is a fundamental technique for calibrating quantum devices and performing quantum engineering tasks. In this paper, we utilize regularization to improve the QDT accuracy whenever the probe states are informationally complete or informationally incomplete. In the informationally complete scenario, without regularization, we optimize the resource (probe state) distribution by converting it to a semidefinite programming problem. Then in both the informationally complete and informationally incomplete scenarios, we discuss different regularization forms and prove the mean squared error scales as $ O(\frac{1}{N}) $ or tends to a constant with $ N $ state copies under the static assumption. We also characterize the ideal best regularization for the identifiable parameters, accounting for both the informationally complete and informationally incomplete scenarios. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of different regularization forms and a quantum optical experiment test shows that a suitable regularization form can reach a reduced mean squared error., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

It is recently proposed that cosmic rays generate a seed magnetic field in the early universe. In this paper, we propose another generation mechanism of magnetic fields by cosmic rays, which is the Biermann battery driven by resistive heating induced by the streaming of cosmic rays. This mechanism is dominant in small-scale, low-temperature, and strongly-ionized regions, compared with other previously proposed mechanisms. Because cosmic rays are expected to be accelerated after the death of the first stars, this mechanism can work during structure formation in the early universe. We show that it makes the seed magnetic field with sufficient strength for the subsequent dynamo to amplify it to the micro Gauss level in the current galaxies., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we consider the filtering problem of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The OPO pump power may fluctuate due to environmental disturbances, resulting in uncertainty in the system modeling. Thus, both the state and the unknown parameter may need to be estimated simultaneously. We formulate this problem using a state-space representation of the OPO dynamics. Under the assumption of Gaussianity and proper constraints, the dual Kalman filter method and the joint extended Kalman filter method are employed to simultaneously estimate the system state and the pump power. Among various approaches toward quantum computation, measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) multiplexed in time domain is currently a promising method for addressing the need for scalability. MBQC requires two components: cluster states and programmable measurements. With time-domain multiplexing, the former has been realized on an ultra-large-scale. The latter, however, has remained unrealized, leaving the large-scale cluster states unused. In this work, we make such a measurement system and use it to demonstrate basic quantum operations multiplexed in the time domain with 25 MHz clock frequency. We verify transformations of the input states and their nonclassicalities for single-step quantum operations and also observe multi-step quantum operations up to one hundred steps., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

We investigate effects of upstream density fluctuations on the diffusive shock acceleration by Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations show that particles are reaccelerated in the shock downstream region by a sound wave generated at the shock front. The time scale of turbulent acceleration by the sound wave is estimated. We propose a new back reaction of particles accelerated around the shock front. The accelerated particles generate the upstream density fluctuations by the Drury instability, which are converted to the downstream sound waves by the shock. The downstream sound waves modify the momentum spectrum of particles accelerated around the shock front. This new back reaction affects emission from the accelerated particles, which gives a new constraint on the acceleration efficiency of the diffusive shock acceleration., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, results and discussion updated. Robustness and reliability are two key requirements for developing practical quantum control systems. The purpose of this paper is to design a coherent feedback controller for a class of linear quantum systems suffering from Markovian jumping faults so that the closed-loop quantum system has both fault tolerance and H-infinity disturbance attenuation performance. This paper first extends the physical realization conditions from the time-invariant case to the time-varying case for linear stochastic quantum systems. By relating the fault tolerant H-infinity control problem to the dissipation properties and the solutions of Riccati differential equations, an H-infinity controller for the quantum system is then designed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In particular, an algorithm is employed to introduce additional noises and to construct the corresponding input matrices to ensure the physical realizability of the quantum controller. For real applications of the developed fault-tolerant control strategy, we present a linear quantum system example from quantum optics, where the amplitude of the pumping field randomly jumps among different values. We investigate a coherent feedback squeezer that uses quantum coherent feedback (measurement-free) control. Our squeezer is simple, easy to implement, robust to the gain fluctuation, and broadband compared to the existing squeezers because of the negative coherent feedback configuration. We conduct a feasibility study that looks at the stability conditions for a feedback system to optimize the designs of real optical devices. The feasibility study gives fabrication tolerance necessary for designing and realizing the actual device. Quantum detector tomography is a fundamental technique for calibrating quantum devices and performing quantum engineering tasks. In this paper, a novel quantum detector tomography method is proposed. First, a series of different probe states are used to generate measurement data. Then, using constrained linear regression estimation, a stage-1 estimation of the detector is obtained. Finally, the positive semidefinite requirement is added to guarantee a physical stage-2 estimation. This Two-stage Estimation (TSE) method has computational complexity $O(nd^2M)$, where $n$ is the number of $d$-dimensional detector matrices and $M$ is the number of different probe states. An error upper bound is established, and optimization on the coherent probe states is investigated. Quantum computation promises applications that are thought to be impossible with classical computation. To realize practical quantum computation, the following three properties will be necessary: universality, scalability, and fault-tolerance. Universality is the ability to execute arbitrary multi-input quantum algorithms. Scalability means that computational resources such as logical qubits can be increased without requiring exponential increase in physical resources. Lastly, fault-tolerance is the ability to perform quantum algorithms in presence of imperfections and noise. A promising approach to scalability was demonstrated with the generation of one-million-mode 1-dimensional cluster state, a resource for one-input computation in measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). The demonstration was based on time-domain multiplexing (TDM) approach using continuous-variable (CV) optical flying qumodes (CV analogue of qubit). Demonstrating universality, however, has been a challenging task for any physical system and approach. Here, we present, for the first time among any physical system, experimental realization of a scalable resource state for universal MBQC: a 2-dimensional cluster state. We also prove the universality and give the methodology for utilizing this state in MBQC. Our state is based on TDM approach that allows unlimited resource generation regardless of the coherence time of the system. As a demonstration of our method, we generate and verify a 2-dimensional cluster state capable of about 5,000 operation steps on 5 inputs., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures

We demonstrate an optical quantum nondemolition (QND) interaction gate with a bandwidth of about 100 MHz. Employing this gate, we are able to perform QND measurements in real time on randomly fluctuating signals. Our QND gate relies upon linear optics and offline-prepared squeezed states. In contrast to previous demonstrations on narrow sideband modes, our gate is compatible with non-Gaussian quantum states temporally localized in a wave-packet mode, and thus opens the way for universal gate operations and realization of quantum error correction.

We propose an experimental design for universal continuous-variable quantum computation that incorporates recent innovations in linear-optics-based continuous-variable cluster state generation and cubic-phase gate teleportation. The first ingredient is a protocol for generating the bilayer-square-lattice cluster state (a universal resource state) with temporal modes of light. With this state, measurement-based implementation of Gaussian unitary gates requires only homodyne detection. Second, we describe a measurement device that implements an adaptive cubic-phase gate, up to a random phase-space displacement. Entangled measurement is a crucial tool in quantum technology. We propose a new entanglement measure of multi-mode detection, which estimates the amount of entanglement that can be created in a measurement. To illustrate the proposed measure, we perform quantum tomography of a two-mode detector that is comprised of two superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. Our method utilizes coherent states as probe states, which can be easily prepared with accuracy. Our work shows that a separable state such as a coherent state is enough to characterize a potentially entangled detector. We investigate the entangling capability of the detector in various settings. Our proposed measure verifies that the detector makes an entangled measurement under certain conditions, and reveals the nature of the entangling properties of the detector. Since the precise characterization of a detector is essential for applications in quantum information technology, the experimental reconstruction of detector properties along with the proposed measure will be key features in future quantum information processing., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

In recent quantum optical continuous-variable experiments, the number of fully inseparable light modes has drastically increased by introducing a multiplexing scheme either in the time domain or in the frequency domain. Here, modifying the time-domain multiplexing experiment reported in Nature Photonics 7, 982 (2013), we demonstrate successive generation of fully inseparable light modes for more than one million modes. The resulting multi-mode state is useful as a dual-rail CV cluster state. We circumvent the previous problem of optical phase drifts, which has limited the number of fully inseparable light modes to around ten thousands, by continuous feedback control of the optical system., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We introduce a fully tuneable entangling gate for continuous-variable one-way quantum computation. We present a proof-of-principle demonstration by propagating two independent optical inputs through a three-mode linear cluster state and applying the gate in various regimes. The genuine quantum nature of the gate is confirmed by verifying the entanglement strength in the output state. Our protocol can be readily incorporated into efficient multi-mode interaction operations in the context of large-scale one-way quantum computation, as our tuning process is the generalisation of cluster state shaping., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally demonstrate, with an all-optical setup, a nonlocal deterministic quantum non-demolition interaction gate applicable to quantum states at nodes separated by a physical distance and connected by classical communication channels. The gate implementation, based on entangled states shared in advance, local operations, and classical communication, runs completely in parallel fashion at both the local nodes, requiring minimum resource. The nondemolition character of the gate up to the local unitary squeezing is verified by the analysis using several coherent states. A genuine quantum nature of the gate is confirmed by the capability of deterministically producing an entangled state at the output from two separable input states. The all-optical nonlocal gate operation can be potentially incorporated into distributed quantum computing with atomic or solid state systems as a cross-processor unitary operation., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Quantum computers promise ultrafast performance of certain tasks. Experimentally appealing, measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) requires an entangled resource called a cluster state, with long computations requiring large cluster states. Previously, the largest cluster state consisted of 8 photonic qubits or light modes, while the largest multipartite entangled state of any sort involved 14 trapped ions. These implementations involve quantum entities separated in space, and in general, each experimental apparatus is used only once. Here, we circumvent this inherent inefficiency by multiplexing light modes in the time domain. We deterministically generate and fully characterise a continuous-variable cluster state containing more than 10,000 entangled modes. This is, by 3 orders of magnitude, the largest entangled state ever created to date. The entangled modes are individually addressable wavepackets of light in two beams. Furthermore, we present an efficient scheme for MBQC on this cluster state based on sequential applications of quantum teleportation.

We experimentally demonstrate a controlled-phase gate for continuous variables in a fully measurement-based fashion. In our scheme, the two independent input states of the gate, encoded in two optical modes, are teleported into a four-mode Gaussian cluster state. As a result, one of the entanglement links present in the initial cluster state appears in the two unmeasured output modes as the corresponding entangling gate acting on the input states. The genuine quantum character of this gate becomes manifest and is verified through the presence of entanglement at the output for a product two-mode coherent input state. By combining our controlled-phase gate with the recently reported module for universal single-mode Gaussian operations [R. Ukai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 240504 (2011)], it is possible to implement universal Gaussian operations on arbitrary multi-mode quantum optical states in form of a fully measurement-based one-way quantum computation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
