1. Development of Rotating Target with Ferrofluid Seal for ILC Electron-Driven Positron Source

Abstract

In the ILC electron-driven positron source, acceleration tubes are located immediately downstream of the positron generation target to capture the generated positrons, necessitating high vacuum for their operation. We designed a rotating target using a ferrofluid rotating vacuum seal that can stably maintain a vacuum of $10^{-6}$ Pa and a tangential velocity of 5 m/sec, which meets the requirements of the ILC positron source. We fabricated a full-scale prototype and confirmed the compatibility of rotation and stable vacuum maintenance. Various tests on the radiation resistance of the ferrofluid demonstrated its ability to withstand six years of radiation exposure in normal ILC operation without degradation and to continue exhibiting vacuum sealing performance. Radiation exposure tests on a small-scale target with a structure and material similar to the full-scale target confirmed its operability after two years of radiation exposure in normal ILC operation. The design, including thermal load, stress analysis, and cooling, led to the conclusion of an estimated lifespan of the target of over one year, based on comparison with the SLC target. Abstract

Energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) have been emphasised by the recent (2020) update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics as one of the most promising technologies for the accelerator base of future high-energy physics. The current paper has been written as a base document to support and specify details of the recently published European roadmap for the development of energy-recovery linacs. The paper summarises the previous achievements on ERLs and the status of the field and its basic technology items. The main possible future contributions and applications of ERLs to particle and nuclear physics as well as industrial developments are presented. The paper includes a vision for the further future, beyond 2030, as well as a comparative data base for the main existing and forthcoming ERL facilities. A series of continuous innovations, such as on intense electron sources or high-quality superconducting cavity technology, will massively contribute to the development of accelerator physics at large. Industrial applications are potentially revolutionary and may carry the development of ERLs much further, establishing another shining example of the impact of particle physics on society and its technical foundation with a special view on sustaining nature.

Abstract

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is now under consideration as the next global project in particle physics. In this report, we review of all aspects of the ILC program: the physics motivation, the accelerator design, the run plan, the proposed detectors, the experimental measurements on the Higgs boson, the top quark, the couplings of the W and Z bosons, and searches for new particles. We review the important role that polarized beams play in the ILC program. The first stage of the ILC is planned to be a Higgs factory at 250 GeV in the centre of mass. Energy upgrades can naturally be implemented based on the concept of a linear collider. We discuss in detail the ILC program of Higgs boson measurements and the expected precision in the determination of Higgs couplings. We compare the ILC capabilities to those of the HL-LHC and to those of other proposed e+e- Higgs factories. Abstract

Halo distribution is a key topic for background study. This paper has developed an analytical method to give an estimation of ATF beam halo distribution. The equilibrium particle distribution of the beam tail in the ATF damping ring is calculated analytically with different emittance and different vacuum degree. The analytical results agree the measurements very well. 7. Analytical estimation of ATF beam halo distribution

Abstract

In order to study the background status in the ATF2 beam line and the interaction point (IP), this paper developed an analytical method to give the estimation of ATF beam halo distribution based on K. Hirata and K. Yokoya's theory. The equilibrium particle distribution of beam tail in ATF damping ring, when each electron is being affected by, in addition to the synchrotron radiation damping effects, several stochastic processes, such as beam-gas scattring, beam-gas bremsstrahlung and intra-beam scattering, was presented. Abstract

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe., Comment: See also http://www.linearcollider.org/ILC/TDR . Abstract

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe., Comment: See also http://www.linearcollider.org/ILC/TDR . Abstract

A new algorithm for calculating the spin tune and the n-axis for circular accelerators is presented. The method resembles the one employed in the existing program code SODOM in that one-turn numerical spin maps at equally spaced orbit angle variables are used but it is more efficient than the latter. Furthermore, it is applicable at large openning angles of the n-axis, whereas the existing SODOM only converges for small angles.

ILC is an electron-positron linear collider based on Superconducting linear accelerator. Linear collider is an only solution to realinze high energy electron-positron collision beyond the limit of synchrotron radiation energy loss by ring colliders. In E-Driven positron source of ILC, the generated positron is captured by a standing wave cavity. Because the deceleration capture method is employed, the positron is off-crest over the linac. Because the beam-loading is expected to be more than 1A in a multi-bunch format, the compensation is essential to obtain uniform intensity over the pulse. A conventional method for the compensation controlling the timing doesn’t work because RF and Beam induced field are in different phase. In this manuscript, we discuss the compensation with the off-crest acceleration case. During the preparatory phase of the International Linear Collider (ILC) project, all technical development and engineering design needed for the start of ILC construction must be completed, in parallel with intergovernmental discussion of governance and sharing of responsibilities and cost. The ILC Preparatory Laboratory (Pre-lab) is conceived to execute the technical and engineering work and to assist the intergovernmental discussion by providing relevant information upon request. It will be based on a worldwide partnership among laboratories with a headquarters hosted in Japan. This proposal, prepared by the ILC International Development Team and endorsed by the International Committee for Future Accelerators, describes an organisational framework and work plan for the Pre-lab. E-Driven method is a technical backup for positron source for ILC. In the positron source, the positron is generated and accelerated in a multi-bunch format with gaps in a macro-pulse. We employ AM (Amplitude Modulation) to suppress the transient beam-loading, but a small fluctuation is still expected, depending on the compensation accuracy. In this article, the positron yield which is ratio of numbers of positrons over electrons, is evaluated as a function of the compensation accuracy. Abstract

ILC (International Linear Collider) is e⁺ e⁻ linear collider in the next high energy program promoted by ICFA. In ILC, an intense positron pulse in a multi-bunch format is generated with gamma ray from Undulator radiation. As a technical backup, the electron driven positron source has been studied. By employing a standing wave L-band accelerator for the capture linac, an enough amount of positron can be captured due to the large aperture, even with a limited accelerator gradient. However, the heavy beam loading up to 2 A perturbs the field gradient and profile along the longitudinal position. Abstract

We proposed 6 GeV Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) as an intense gamma-ray source for the polarized positron source of International Linear Collider (ILC)*. In this scheme, Coherent Synchrotron Radiation from quasi-CW 6 GeV electron beam is stacked in optical cavity at middle infrared region, and it is used for inverse Compton scattering to generate 10 MeV polarized gamma-ray. The same 6 GeV superconducting linac accelerates both the electron and positron beams up to 5 GeV for injection to the dumping ring. Furthermore, it is available for X-ray light source by adding another recirculation loop. Abstract

Since the ICFA decision on the choice of technology, a world-wide collaboration on the design of the ILC has rapidly progressed. The formation of the GDE will accelerate the work towards a final design. An important technical challenge is obviously the high gradient acceleration but what is similarly challenging is the collision of extremely small beams of a few nanometer size. The latter challenge has three distinct issues: creating small emittance beams, preserving the emittance during acceleration and transport, and focusing the beams to nanometers. Most studies have been done using computer simulations but many issues still remain that require experimental verification. KEK-ATF was built to create small emittance beams, and succeeded in obtaining an emittance that almost satisfies the ILC requirements. In this proposal we present a project, ATF2, which addresses the third issue, namely the focusing of the beam into nanometer spot.ybr> In the longer term, the ATF2 project would also provide invaluable input for the CLIC design of a future multi-TeV collider. The ATF2 project will extend the extraction beamline of the ATF with an ILC-type final focus system to create a tightly focused, stable beam by making use of the small emittance of the ATF.
