We present the performance of a full-length prototype of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). The detector is composed of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sampling calorimeter with longitudinal and transverse segmentation (FoCal-E) of about 20$X_0$ and a hadronic copper-scintillating-fiber calorimeter (FoCal-H) of about 5$\lambda_{\rm int}$. The data were taken between 2021 and 2023 at the CERN PS and SPS beam lines with hadron (electron) beams up to energies of 350 (300) GeV. Regarding FoCal-E, we report a comprehensive analysis of its response to minimum ionizing particles across all pad layers. The longitudinal shower profile of electromagnetic showers is measured with a layer-wise segmentation of 1$X_0$. As a projection to the performance of the final detector in electromagnetic showers, we demonstrate linearity in the full energy range, and show that the energy resolution fulfills the requirements for the physics needs. Additionally, the performance to separate two-showers events was studied by quantifying the transverse shower width. Regarding FoCal-H, we report a detailed analysis of the response to hadron beams between 60 and 350 GeV. The results are compared to simulations obtained with a Geant4 model of the test beam setup, which in particular for FoCal-E are in good agreement with the data. The energy resolution of FoCal-E was found to be lower than 3% at energies larger than 100 GeV. The response of FoCal-H to hadron beams was found to be linear, albeit with a significant intercept that is about factor 2 larger than in simulations. Its resolution, which is non-Gaussian and generally larger than in simulations, was quantified using the FWHM, and decreases from about 16% at 100 GeV to about 11% at 350 GeV. The magnetic structure and spin-wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$ were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the $ab$ plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c$ axis where the magnetic propagation vector is $\mathbf{k}=\left(0,0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$. The ordered magnetic moments are estimated to be $0.54(2)\mu_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{5+}$ ($4d^1$) ions and $1.07(3)\mu_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{4+}$ ($4d^2$) ions at 4 K, which are about half of the expected values. The inelastic neutron scattering results display strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy along the $c$ axis due to the spin-orbit interaction in Mo ions evidenced by the spin gap at the magnetic zone center. The model Hamiltonian consisting of in-plane anisotropic exchange interactions, the interlayer exchange interaction, and easy-axis single-ion anisotropy can explain our inelastic neutron scattering data well. Strong Ising-like anisotropy and weak interlayer coupling compared with the intralayer exchange interaction can explain both the high-temperature magnetoresistance and long-time magnetization decay recently observed in La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is a highly one-dimensional spin-1/2 inequilateral diamond-chain antiferromagnet. Spinon continuum and spin-singlet dimer excitations are observed in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra, which is in excellent agreement with a theoretical prediction: a dimer-monomer composite structure, where the dimer is caused by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling and the monomer forms an almost isolated quantum AFM chain controlling low-energy excitations. Moreover, muon spin rotation/relaxation spectroscopy shows no long-range ordering down to 90~mK, which is roughly three orders of magnitude lower than the exchange interaction of the quantum AFM chain. K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is, thus, regarded as a compound that exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid behavior at low temperatures close to the ground state.

The collective spin-wave excitations in the antiferromagnetic state of $\gamma$-Fe$_{0.7}$Mn$_{0.3}$ were investigated using the inelastic neutron scattering technique. The spin excitations remain isotropic up to the high excitation energy, ${\hbar\omega}= 78$ meV. The excitations gradually become broad and damped above 40 meV. The damping parameter ${\gamma}$ reaches 110(16) meV at ${\hbar\omega} = 78$ meV, which is much larger than that for other metallic compounds, e.g., CaFe$_2$As$_2$ (24 meV), La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ ($52-72$ meV), and Mn$_{90}$Cu$_{10}$ (88 meV). In addition, the spin-wave dispersion shows a deviation from the relation $({\hbar\omega})^2 = c^2q^2 + {\Delta}^2$ above 40 meV. The group velocity above this energy increases to 470(40) meV{\AA}, which is higher than that at the low energies, $c = 226(5)$ meV{\AA}. These results could suggest that the spin-wave excitations merge with the continuum of the individual particle-hole excitations at 40 meV., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering measurement is performed on a breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet Ba3Yb2Zn5O11. The observed dispersionless excitations are explained by a crystalline electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian of Kramers ion Yb3+ of which the local symmetry exhibits C3v point group symmetry. The magnetic susceptibility previously reported is consistently reproduced by the energy scheme of the CEF excitations. The obtained wave functions of the ground state Kramers doublet exhibit the planer-type anisotropy. The result demonstrates that Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 is an experimental realization of breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet with a pseudospin S = 1/2 having easy-plane anisotropy., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of NdFe$_{3}$($^{11}$BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$ to explore the magnetic excitations, to establish the underlying Hamiltonian, and to reveal the detailed nature of hybridization between the 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism. The observed spectra exhibiting a couple of key features, i.e., anti-crossing of Nd- and Fe-excitations and anisotropy gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center, are explained by the magnetic model including spin interaction in the framework of weakly-coupled Fe$^{3+}$ chains, interaction between the Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ moments, and single-ion anisotropy derived from Nd$^{3+}$ crystal field. The combination of the measurements and calculations reveals that the hybridization between 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism propagates the local magnetic anisotropy of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion to the Fe$^{3+}$ network, resulting in the bulk structure of multiferroics., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

A spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap has been discovered in antiferromagnetic spin chain substances when the spin value is 1/2, 1 or 2. To find spin gap (singlet-triplet) excitations in spin-3/2 chain substances, we performed inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements on {\it R}CrGeO$_5$ ({\it R} = Y or Sm) powders. As expected, we observed spin gap excitations and the dispersion relation of the lowest magnetic excitations. Neutron Brillouin scattering (NBS) method was developed using a pulsed spallation neutron source, and the feasibility of NBS was demonstrated by observing ferromagnetic spin waves in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ and SrRuO$_3$ powders. Gapless spin-wave excitations were observed in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$, which were continuously extended to the lower scattering vector $Q$ from previous results using single crystals. The novel result is a well-defined quadratic $Q$ dependence in the spin-wave dispersion curve with a large energy gap in SrRuO$_3$ indicating robust spin-orbit coupling.

We describe a method of white-beam inelastic neutron scattering for improved measurement efficiency. The method consists of matrix inversion and selective extraction. The former is to resolve each incident energy component from the white-beam data, and the latter eliminates contamination by elastic components, which produce strong backgrounds that otherwise obfuscate the inelastic scattering components. We performed inelastic neutron experiments on underdoped La_2-xSr_xCuO_4(x=0.10, T_c=28.6K) using a time-of-flight neutron scattering technique. Four incommensurate peaks on the two-dimensional reciprocal plane disperse inwards toward an antiferromagnetic zone center as the energy increases. These peaks merge into a single peak at an energy E_cross around w=40+-3meV. Beyond E_cross, the peak starts to broaden and ``hourglass-like'' excitations are observed. The E_cross in the underdoped sample is smaller than that reported for the optimally doped La_1.84Sr_0.16CuO_4. The reduction of the E_cross is explained by the doping-independent slope of the downward dispersion below the E_cross combined with the smaller incommensurability in the underdoped sample. In the energy spectrum of chi"(w), we observed a similar "peak-dip-hump" structure in the energy region of 10~45meV to that reported for the optimally doped sample. We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear combination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron. Of great recent interest in condensed matter physics are phenomena of coexistence of quantum and classical properties in the same material. Such duality occurs in certain mixed-spin antiferromagnets composed of quantum spin chains interacting through ``auxiliary'' magnetic ions. In this category are linear-chain rare earth nickelates that exhibit a seemingly paradoxical co-existence of long-range magnetic order and one-dimensional gapped quantum spin excitations at low temperatures. In the present paper we propose a unified physical description of these compounds, supported by recent neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering studies. Our basic concept is the effective separation between low-frequency classical and high-frequency quantum spin correlations. This interpretation enables experimental measurements of some previously inaccessible fundamental properties of quantum spin chains, and predicts new exotic magnetic excitations and mechanisms of long-range ordering in complex quantum magnets., Comment: 6 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Nd2BaNiO5 single-crystals and powder samples are used to study the dynamic coupling of 1-dimensional Haldane-gap excitations in the S=1 Ni2+ -chains to local crystal-field transitions, associated with the rare earth ions. Substantial interference between the two types of excitations is observed even in the 1-dimensional paramagnetic phase. Despite that, the results provide solid justification for the previously proposed ``static staggered field'' model for R2BaNiO5 nickelates. Polarized and unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering is used to study Haldane-gap excitations in the mixed-spin linear-chain antiferromagnet Nd2BaNiO5. The longitudinal mode, polarized along the direction of ordered moments, is observed for the first time. The model of isolated Haldane chains in a static staggered exchange field, that is known to work very well for static properties and transverse spin excitations in R2BaNiO5 compounds, fails to explain new results for the longitudinal spin gap., Comment: 4 pages 3 figures

Long-range magnetic ordering in R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R=magnetic rare earth) quasi-1-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnets is described by a simple mean-field model that is based on the intrinsic staggered magnetization function of isolated Haldane spin chains for the Ni-subsystem, and single-ion magnetization functions for the rare earth ions. The model is applied to new experimental results obtained in powder diffraction experiments on Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5 and Nd Y Ba Ni O_5, and to previously published diffraction data for Er_2 Ba Ni O_5. Linear-chain nickelates with the composition (Nd_x Y_{1-x})_2 Ba Ni O_5 (x=1, x=0.75, x=0.5, and x=0.25) are studied in a series of neutron scattering experiments. Powder diffraction is used to determine the temperature dependence of the magnetic structure in all four systems. Single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering is employed to investigate the temperature dependence of the Haldane-gap excitations and low-energy spin waves in the x=1 compound Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5. The results of these experiments are discussed in the context of the ``Haldane chain in a staggered field'' model for R_2 Ba Ni O_5 systems, and quantitative agreement with theory is obtained., Comment: Major rewriting and inclusion of new experimental data 30 pages, 14 figures

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladders of copper ions. We observed that when a small amount of yttrium is substituted for strontium, which is expected to reduce the number of holes, the dimerized state and the structure in the chain are changed drastically. The inelastic peaks originating from the dimerized state of the chain becomes broader in energy but not in momentum space. This implies that the dimerized state becomes unstable but the spin correlations are unchanged with yttrium substitution. Furthermore, it was observed that nuclear Bragg peak intensities originating from the chain show strong temperature and x dependence, which suggests that the chains slide along the c axis as temperature and x are varied., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Phys.
