Abrasive waterjets are being increasingly used in civil engineering for rock and concrete cutting, particularly for the demolition or repair of old structures. The energy of an abrasive waterjet is primarily provided by the accelerated abrasive. The momentum transfer during mixing and acceleration determines the abrasive velocity, which affects the cutting performance. Meanwhile, the geometry of the focus at which mixing occurs influences the momentum transfer efficiency. In this study, the effects of the focus geometry on the optimum abrasive flow rate (AFR) and momentum transfer characteristics in hard rock cutting were investigated. Experiments were conducted using granite specimens to test the AFR under different focus geometry conditions such as diameter and length. The results show that the focus geometry significantly affects the maximum cutting depth and optimum AFR. The maximum cutting energy was analyzed based on the cutting efficiency of a single abrasive particle. In addition, the momentum transfer parameter (MTP) was evaluated from the empirical relationship between the maximum energy and the cutting depth for granitic rocks. Accordingly, a model for estimating the MTP based on the AFR was developed. It is expected that the results of this study can be employed for the optimization of waterjet rock cutting.

Abrasive waterjet cutting technology has come back into use in the field of rock excavation (such as for tunneling) due to the need for precision construction with low vibration. Because the abrasive particles play an important role in efficient erosion during the cutting process, the abrasive characteristics strongly affect the rock cutting performance. In this study, rock cutting tests were performed with five different coarse (40 mesh) garnets to explore the effect of the abrasive feed rate, physical properties, and particle size distribution on rock cutting performance. In addition, garnet particle disintegration was investigated with garnet characteristics for the abrasive waterjet. The test results indicate that the particle size distribution, garnet purity, specific gravity, and hardness are the most important parameters for rock cutting performance. This study offers better understanding of coarse garnet performance and efficiency according to the garnet characteristics. This should provide assistance in selection of the garnet needed to achieve the desired performance for hard rock cutting.

The abrasive mixing variables, such as the abrasive and water flow rates and the focus geometry parameters, determine the profitability of an abrasive waterjet system. In this study, the mixing efficiency characteristics in abrasive waterjet rock cutting were investigated. To demonstrate comprehensively the efficiency reduction due to collision during abrasive mixing, the chance of collision was expressed as the distance between the abrasive particles in the focus. The mixing efficiency was then assessed by utilizing the empirical relationship between the experimental results and the developed model. Based on the particle density and the velocity, the closer particles showed higher chances of collision, thus yielding a reduced cutting performance. Using the distance between particles model, the optimum abrasive flow rate and the cutting performance of abrasive waterjet systems can be estimated. This developed model can be used for the design selection of abrasive flow rate and systems for the cost-effective use of abrasive waterjets.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of abrasive erosion considering the material properties of abrasives and targets. An abrasive particle erosion model considering energy transfer due to hardness differences was developed based on energy conservation using the correlation between volume removal and effective kinetic energy. To obtain the effective erosion kinetic energy of an abrasive, an acceleration model was derived for the abrasive particles, including terms describing the properties of the abrasive and fluid. The applicability of the suggested model was verified by comparing the brittle erosion results obtained using a previous theoretical approach to those of the present numerical analysis. The results obtained using the developed model exhibited good qualitative agreement with the brittle material erosion results. By evaluating acceleration and the erosion characteristics of an abrasive, the erosion performance could be predicted and optimized.

This study investigates the geomechanical, hydraulic and thermal characteristics of natural sandy sediments collected during the Ulleung Basin gas hydrate expedition 2, East Sea, offshore Korea. The studied sediment formation is considered as a potential target reservoir for natural gas production. The sediments contained silt, clay and sand fractions of 21%, 1.3% and 77.7%, respectively, as well as diatomaceous minerals with internal pores. The peak friction angle and critical state (or residual state) friction angle under drained conditions were ~26° and ~22°, respectively. There was minimal or no apparent cohesion intercept. Stress- and strain-dependent elastic moduli, such as tangential modulus and secant modulus, were identified. The sediment stiffness increased with increasing confining stress, but degraded with increasing strain regime. Variations in water permeability with water saturation were obtained by fitting experimental matric suction-water saturation data to the Maulem-van Genuchen model. A significant reduction in thermal conductivity (from ~1.4–1.6 to ~0.5–0.7 W·m−1·K−1) was observed when water saturation decreased from 100% to ~10%–20%. In addition, the electrical resistance increased quasi-linearly with decreasing water saturation. The geomechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties of the hydrate-free sediments reported herein can be used as the baseline when predicting properties and behavior of the sediments containing hydrates, and when the hydrates dissociate during gas production. The variations in thermal and hydraulic properties with changing water and gas saturation can be used to assess gas production rates from hydrate-bearing deposits. In addition, while depressurization of hydrate-bearing sediments inevitably causes deformation of sediments under drained conditions, the obtained strength and stiffness properties and stress-strain responses of the sedimentary formation under drained loading conditions can be effectively used to assess sediment responses to depressurization to ensure safe gas production operations in this potential target reservoir.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) poses a significant public health concern as it is the most common cancer detected among women worldwide. Early detection and intervention are associated with better prognosis and survival. A primary reason for the rising mortality and morbidity in developing countries is the lack of patient education and practice early detection programs and presentation. Aims and Objectives: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of delayed presentation and the factors lead to delay among BC patients in Sri Lanka. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January 01, 2023, to June 30, 2023 among women diagnosed with BC attending two selected state hospitals in Sri Lanka. All women with histological diagnosis of early, locally advanced, or metastatic BC attending for treatment were included and women with recurrent BC and concomitant other cancers were excluded. Presentation delay was defined as ≥3 months. The calculated sample size was 396. Results: About 47.5% of our study population (n=188) had a presentation delay of more than 3 months. The main reasons for the delay in presentation were, being unaware that BC is a major problem in Sri Lanka, difficulty in accessing healthcare, and not being able to find time due to family and social commitments. Women who had not been practicing self-breast examination had a significant association with presentation delay (OR=3.26, 95% CI - 0.090–0.362, P=0.001). The participants who were having a presentation delay were also more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer (OR=2.86, 95% CI - 2.573–3.153, P=0.000). Conclusion: Our study population depicts a good knowledge related to BC symptoms, risk factors, and early detection methods. However, very few are practicing them. There is also a significant delay of presentation due to various factors. Awareness and good practices would lead to early detection and diagnosis and improve overall survival.

Abstract Background The shadowing house officer is an experiential learning activity that usually takes place within the final year clinical rotations of medical undergraduates. An exposure to a surgical intern is especially useful as the work extends to more practical aspects of ward work. Objective We assessed the impact of the shadowing house officer exprience during medical student clinical rotation on the surgical internship and to evaluate the challenges of the shadowing period. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was carried out among 108 surgical intern doctors in Sri Lanka via electronic media in 2023. Results Our study population consisted of 108 interns, with a response rate of 43.2%. This study demonstrates that on average a final year medical student undergoes a 4- day shadowing period in surgery which was considered by a majority to help in smooth transition to internship. 56% had a clear understanding about learning outcomes and less than half has had an induction session prior to commencement of shadowing. Official documentation, routine ward work, team work and communication skills were meaningfully experienced during shadowing. The main criticisms were inadequate breaks leading to exhaustion and missing out on important teaching activities. Another major concern was shadowing close to the final examination. Conclusions Surgical shadowing house officer is an authentic work experience that intern doctors consider as important component in orientating the role of an intern. Introduction of shadowing at an earlier stage would be more beneficial and provide a broader view about the clinical set up to undergraduates.

Abstract Background Breast aesthetics is becoming increasingly important in breast cancer surgery due to changes in patient expectations and greater emphasis been placed on the psychosocial outcomes. Studies have shown no difference in local recurrence risk between mastectomy and breast conserving surgery (BCS) and also a higher overall survival rate after BCS. Breast preservation improves the quality of life substantially compared to mastectomy. Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (O-BCS) involves tumour excision whilst overcoming the limitations of standard breast conserving surgery (S-BCS) by allowing larger resection volumes, avoiding deformities with better aesthetic results. Our study aims to compare the oncosurgical and aesthetic outcomes of O-BCS versus S-BCS among women in Sri Lanka. Methods We conducted a retrospective study over a 4-year period including patients who underwent breast conservation surgery for primary non-metastatic breast cancer in two tertiary care units. We assessed outcomes in terms of re-excision rates, resection margin, complications and aesthetic outcomes using a Likert scale questionnaire to grade specific outcomes such as symmetry, volume, nipple position, scar visibility. Non-parametric tests were used for statistical analyses. Results Fifty-four and seventy-three patients underwent S-BCS and O-BCS respectively. The median specimen volume and the maximum tumour diameter were significantly higher in O-BCS [160(range:65–220); 4.2(range: 1.2–5.2)] compared to S-BCS [65(range:45–86); 2.4(range: 1.0-2.6)]. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are currently among the most widely-used deep neural network (DNN) architectures available and achieve state-of-the-art performance for many problems. Originally applied to computer vision tasks, CNNs work well with any data with a spatial relationship, besides images, and have been applied to different fields. However, recent works have highlighted numerical stability challenges in DNNs, which also relates to their known sensitivity to noise injection. These challenges can jeopardise their performance and reliability. This paper investigates DeepGOPlus, a CNN that predicts protein function. DeepGOPlus has achieved state-of-the-art performance and can successfully take advantage and annotate the abounding protein sequences emerging in proteomics. We determine the numerical stability of the model's inference stage by quantifying the numerical uncertainty resulting from perturbations of the underlying floating-point data. In addition, we explore the opportunity to use reduced-precision floating point formats for DeepGOPlus inference, to reduce memory consumption and latency. This is achieved by instrumenting DeepGOPlus' execution using Monte Carlo Arithmetic, a technique that experimentally quantifies floating point operation errors and VPREC, a tool that emulates results with customizable floating point precision formats. Focus is placed on the inference stage as it is the primary deliverable of the DeepGOPlus model, widely applicable across different environments. All in all, our results show that although the DeepGOPlus CNN is very stable numerically, it can only be selectively implemented with lower-precision floating-point formats. We conclude that predictions obtained from the pre-trained DeepGOPlus model are very reliable numerically, and use existing floating-point formats efficiently.

ContextAn existing major challenge in Parkinson's disease (PD) research is the identification of biomarkers of disease progression. While magnetic resonance imaging is a potential source of PD biomarkers, none of the magnetic resonance imaging measures of PD are robust enough to warrant their adoption in clinical research. This study is part of a project that aims to replicate 11 PD studies reviewed in a recent survey (JAMA neurology, 78(10) 2021) to investigate the robustness of PD neuroimaging findings to data and analytical variations.ObjectiveThis study attempts to replicate the results in Hanganu et al. (Brain, 137(4) 2014) using data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI).MethodsUsing 25 PD subjects and 18 healthy controls, we analyzed the rate of change of cortical thickness and of the volume of subcortical structures, and we measured the relationship between structural changes and cognitive decline. We compared our findings to the results in the original study.Results(1) Similarly to the original study, PD patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exhibited increased cortical thinning over time compared to patients without MCI in the right middle temporal gyrus, insula, and precuneus. (2) The rate of cortical thinning in the left inferior temporal and precentral gyri in PD patients correlated with the change in cognitive performance. (3) There were no group differences in the change of subcortical volumes. (4) We did not find a relationship between the change in subcortical volumes and the change in cognitive performance.ConclusionDespite important differences in the dataset used in this replication study, and despite differences in sample size, we were able to partially replicate the original results. We produced a publicly available reproducible notebook allowing researchers to further investigate the reproducibility of the results in Hanganu et al. (2014) when more data is added to PPMI.

An abnormal union of two or more tooth germs in the development process results in fusion of teeth. Such clinical situations present a diagnostic dilemma and a challenge in treatment planning. This article reports the endodontic and esthetic management of an atypical permanent maxillary lateral incisor fused with a supernumerary tooth and a coronal dens invaginatus. A 22-year-old female reported an abnormally large and discolored permanent maxillary left lateral incisor (#22). Cone-beam computed tomographic evaluation revealed a complex, labiolingually thin ribbon-shaped canal system in the central portion interconnected with two other canals along with a coronal dens invaginatus. A 2-year follow-up demonstrated satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcomes after the endodontic therapy and a veneer placement on the concerned tooth.

The analysis of brain-imaging data requires complex processing pipelines to support findings on brain function or pathologies. Recent work has shown that variability in analytical decisions, small amounts of noise, or computational environments can lead to substantial differences in the results, endangering the trust in conclusions. We explored the instability of results by instrumenting a structural connectome estimation pipeline with Monte Carlo Arithmetic to introduce random noise throughout. We evaluated the reliability of the connectomes, the robustness of their features, and the eventual impact on analysis. The stability of results was found to range from perfectly stable (i.e. all digits of data significant) to highly unstable (i.e. 0 − 1 significant digits). This paper highlights the potential of leveraging induced variance in estimates of brain connectivity to reduce the bias in networks without compromising reliability, alongside increasing the robustness and potential upper-bound of their applications in the classification of individual differences. We demonstrate that stability evaluations are necessary for understanding error inherent to brain imaging experiments, and how numerical analysis can be applied to typical analytical workflows both in brain imaging and other domains of computational sciences, as the techniques used were data and context agnostic and globally relevant. Overall, while the extreme variability in results due to analytical instabilities could severely hamper our understanding of brain organization, it also affords us the opportunity to increase the robustness of findings.

How biodiversity is linked to multiple ecosystem functions is not fully understood. Here, the authors show that a new mechanism, which they term the 'jack-of-all-trades' effect, best explains patterns of tree diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in European forests.

We report herein the synthesis of six diterpene derivatives, three of which are new, generated through known organic chemistry reactions that allowed structural modification of the existing natural products kaurenoic acid (1) and copalic acid (2). The new compounds were fully characterized using high resolution mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, 1H- and 13C-NMR experiments. We also report the evaluation of the anti-tuberculosis potential for all compounds, which showed some promising results for Micobacterium tuberculosis inhibition. Moreover, the toxicity for each of the most active compounds was also assessed.

The diaphragm muscle is essential for breathing in mammals. Its asymmetric elevation during contraction correlates with morphological features suggestive of inherent left–right (L/R) asymmetry. Whether this asymmetry is due to L versus R differences in the muscle or in the phrenic nerve activity is unknown. Here, we have combined the analysis of genetically modified mouse models with transcriptomic analysis to show that both the diaphragm muscle and phrenic nerves have asymmetries, which can be established independently of each other during early embryogenesis in pathway instructed by Nodal, a morphogen that also conveys asymmetry in other organs. We further found that phrenic motoneurons receive an early L/R genetic imprint, with L versus R differences both in Slit/Robo signaling and MMP2 activity and in the contribution of both pathways to establish phrenic nerve asymmetry. Our study therefore demonstrates L–R imprinting of spinal motoneurons and describes how L/R modulation of axon guidance signaling helps to match neural circuit formation to organ asymmetry.

A series of iminopyridyl-based ligands, 6-[(Ar)N=C(R)]-2-C6H5N [(Ar = 2,6-Me2-C6H3, R = Me (L1); Ar = 2,6-iPr2-C6H3, R = Me (L2); Ar = 2,6-Me2-C6H3, R = H (L3); Ar = 2,6-iPr2-C6H3, R = H (L4); Ar = 3,5-(CF3)2-C6H3, R = Me (L5); Ar = C6F5, R = Me (L6)], and their corresponding iron (II) complexes were developed to investigate their application in the controlled coordinative polymerization of isoprene. The modulation of steric and electronic properties within this family of ligands/pre-catalysts has shown to influence the stereo-selectivity and activity of the polymerization of isoprene after activation. Upon activation with various co-catalysts such as AliBu3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], AlEt3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] or MAO, the resulting catalysts produced polyisoprenes with an excellent conversion (>99% of 500−5000 equiv.) within less than 1 h (TOF > 500 h−1) and having a variety of stereo-/regio-regularities. The presence of electron-donating and withdrawing groups drastically impacted the activity and the stereoselectivity of the catalysts during the course of the polymerization of isoprene. When activated with AliBu3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], the complexes {6-[(2,6-Me2-C6H3)N=C(Me)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C1) and {6-[(2,6-iPr2-C6H3)N=C(Me)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C2) exhibited moderate trans-1,4 selectivity (>67%) while the iron-based systems bearing related aldiminopyridyl ligands {6-[(2,6-Me2-C6H3)N=C(H)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C3) and {6-[(2,6-iPr2-C6H3)N=C(H)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C4) were found to afford significant cis-1,4 selectivity at low temperature (>86% at −40 °C). On the other hand, the ternary {6-[(3,5-(CF3)2-C6H3)N=C(Me)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C5) or {6-[(C6F5)N=C(Me)]-2-C6H5N}FeCl2 (C6)/AliBu3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] catalytic combinations showed exceptional activity for the polymerization of isoprene (TOF > 1,000,000 h−1), albeit providing less stereoselectivity.

The mutation extra-toes (Gli3Xt-J) on chromosome (Chr) 13 of the mouse is known to be involved in the development of the skeleton. The only visible manifestation is the presence of an extra digit on each hind foot. Here we report evidence from several experiments that Gli3XtJ/+ mice weigh more than littermate Gli3+/+ mice, suggesting an effect on body weight of Gli3 or of a gene tightly linked to it on Chr 13. Four independent experiments in different environments were conducted on mice with different genetic backgrounds derived from the C3XtEso Gli3Xt-J/+ Eso/+ linkage testing strain and the JE/Le strain at adult age. The analyses have shown an association between the Gli3Xt-J allele and a body weight increase of about 6.5%. This effect is genetically dominant. It would appear that if the gene of interest is not Gli3 itself, it must be very close to this locus. Indeed, the expected size for this fragment is 7.9 ± 5.3 cM. The manifestation of this gene, observed in two animal facilities and on different genetic backgrounds, is consistent with the idea that the effect of the gene(s) is displayed in a stable manner. It accounts for a variation of 6.5% of body weight.

Global change is expected to modify the frequency and magnitude of defoliating insect outbreaks in forest ecosystems. Bats are increasingly acknowledged as effective biocontrol agents for pest insect populations. However, a better understanding is required of whether and how bat communities contribute to the resilience of forests to man- and climate-driven biotic disturbances.We studied the responses of forest insectivorous bats to a major pine defoliator, the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa, which is currently expanding its range in response to global warming [corrected]. We used pheromone traps and ultrasound bat recorders to estimate the abundance and activity of moths and predatory bats along the edge of infested pine stands. We used synthetic pheromone to evaluate the effects of experimentally increased moth availability on bat foraging activity. We also evaluated the top-down regulation of moth population by estimating T. pityocampa larval colonies abundance on the same edges the following winter. We observed a close spatio-temporal matching between emergent moths and foraging bats, with bat activity significantly increasing with moth abundance. The foraging activity of some bat species was significantly higher near pheromone lures, i.e. in areas of expected increased prey availability. Furthermore moth reproductive success significantly decreased with increasing bat activity during the flight period of adult moths. These findings suggest that bats, at least in condition of low prey density, exhibit numerical and functional responses to a specific and abundant prey, which may ultimately result in an effective top-down regulation of the population of the prey. These observations are consistent with bats being useful agents for the biocontrol of insect pest populations in plantation forests.

In the title compound, [Mo(C5HF6O2)3], the unit cell is built up by three independent MoIII atoms located on two different threefold axes. The three independent molecules are roughly identical and each MoIII atom is surrounded by three chelating hexafluoroacetonate ligands in a three-bladed propeller-like arrangement, as observed in related compounds with acetylacetonate-type ligands. The structure of the title compound is very similar to the trigonal form of the CrIII analogue. However, the latter crystallizes in a higher-symmetry space group, Poverline{3}c1. Both crystals are twinned by merohedry with the same twin law (overline1overline10/010/00overline1) in reciprocal space, but the symmetry of the Laue group in which it operates is different, overline{3} to overline{3}m for the title complex, and overline{3}m to 6/mmm for the CrIII complex.
