Abstract

Blindly estimating the direction of arrival (DoA) of early room reflections without prior knowledge of the room impulse response or source signal is highly valuable in audio signal processing applications. The FF-PHALCOR (Frequency Focusing PHase ALigned CORrelation) method was recently developed for this purpose, extending the original PHALCOR method to work with arbitrary arrays rather than just spherical ones. Previous studies have provided only initial insights into its performance. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the method's performance and limitations, examining how reflection characteristics such as delay, amplitude, and spatial density affect its effectiveness. The research also proposes improvements to overcome these limitations, enhancing detection quality and reducing false alarms. Additionally, the study examined how spatial perception is affected by generating room impulse responses using estimated reflection information. The findings suggest a perceptual advantage of the proposed approach over the baseline, with particularly high perceptual quality when using the spherical array with 32 microphones. However, the quality is somewhat reduced when using a semi-circular array with only 6 microphones.

Abstract

Within the Standard Model, the branching fraction of the $B_s\to K^0\overline{K}{}^0$ decay is related to other decay rates and CP asymmetries through the approximate $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry of the strong interactions. Three such relations were shown to be violated at a level of about $3\sigma$ each. By means of a systematic search for new physics explanations of these puzzles, we find that possible solutions are highly fine-tuned and rather implausible., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Blockchains implement monetary systems operated by committees of nodes. The robustness of established blockchains presents an opportunity to leverage their infrastructure for creating expansion chains. Expansion chains can provide additional functionality to the primary chain they leverage or implement separate functionalities, while benefiting from the primary chain's security and the stability of its tokens. Indeed, tools like Ethereum's EigenLayer enable nodes to stake (deposit collateral) on a primary chain to form a committee responsible for operating an expansion chain. But here is the rub. Classical protocols assume correct, well-behaved nodes stay correct indefinitely. Yet in our case, the stake incentivizes correctness--it will be slashed (revoked) if its owner deviates. Once a node withdraws its stake, there is no basis to assume its correctness. To address the new challenge, we present Aegis, an expansion chain based on primary-chain stake, assuming a bounded primary-chain write time. Aegis uses references from Aegis blocks to primary blocks to define committees, checkpoints on the primary chain to perpetuate decisions, and resets on the primary chain to establish a new committee if the previous one becomes obsolete. It ensures safety at all times and rapid progress when latency among Aegis nodes is low.

4. Non-stochastic Bandits With Evolving Observations

Abstract

We introduce a novel online learning framework that unifies and generalizes pre-established models, such as delayed and corrupted feedback, to encompass adversarial environments where action feedback evolves over time. In this setting, the observed loss is arbitrary and may not correlate with the true loss incurred, with each round updating previous observations adversarially. We propose regret minimization algorithms for both the full-information and bandit settings, with regret bounds quantified by the average feedback accuracy relative to the true loss. Our algorithms match the known regret bounds across many special cases, while also introducing previously unknown bounds.

8. The Number of Different Digits Determines Solution and Verification of Multiplication Problems

Abstract

The solution and verification of single-digit multiplication problems vary in speed and accuracy. The current study examines whether the number of different digits in a problem accounts for this variance. In Experiment 1, 41 participants solved all 2-9 multiplication problems. In Experiment 2, 43 participants verified these problems. In Experiment 3, 26 participants solved 10 problems that differed in shared-digit network (SDN) size and matched in problem size. In Experiment 4, 24 participants verified these matched sets. Results show faster and more accurate responses to problems that include fewer different digits relative to problems with more different digits, and faster and more accurate responses to problems whose SDN is small relative to problems whose SDN is large. We thus show that the number of different digits in a problem, including the operands and the solution, determines the speed and accuracy of its solution and verification. This parsimonious account also explains why responses to five and tie problems, which include fewer different digits relative to nonfive and nontie problems, are faster and more accurate than responses to other problems.

Abstract

Blind estimation of early room reflections, without knowledge of the room impulse response, holds substantial value. The FF-PHALCOR (Frequency Focusing PHase ALigned CORrelation), method was recently developed for this objective, extending the original PHALCOR method from spherical to arbitrary arrays. However, previous studies only compared the two methods under limited conditions without presenting a comprehensive performance analysis. This study presents an advance by evaluating the performance of the algorithm in a wider range of conditions. Additionally, performance in terms of perception is investigated through a listening test. This test involves synthesizing room impulse responses from known room acoustics parameters and replacing the early reflections with the estimated ones. The importance of the estimated reflections for spatial perception is demonstrated through this test.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

A growing number of products use layer 2 solutions to expand the capabilities of primary blockchains like Ethereum, where computation is off-loaded from the root chain, and the results are published to it in bulk. Those include optimistic and zero-knowledge rollups, information oracles, and app-specific chains. This work presents an analysis of layer 2 blockchain strategies determining the optimal times for publishing transactions on the root chain. There is a trade-off between waiting for a better layer 1 gas price and the urgency to finalize layer 2 transactions. We present a model for the problem that captures this trade-off, generalizing previous works, and we analyze the properties of optimal publishing strategies. Neutrino masses may be explained by adding the same number of gauge singlet fermions as the number of generations. The neutrino masses vanish at tree-level and are only radiatively generated, leading to larger couplings of right-handed neutrinos to Standard Model particles than with the tree-level seesaw mechanism. We compute these radiative corrections and the mixing angles between left- and right-handed neutrinos. Abstract

Abstract Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the etiological agent of chickenpox and shingles, diseases characterised by epidermal virus replication in skin and mucosa and the formation of blisters. We have previously shown that VZV infection has a profound effect on keratinocyte differentiation, altering the normal pattern of epidermal gene expression. In particular, VZV infection reduces expression of suprabasal keratins 1 and 10 and desmosomal proteins, disrupting epidermal structure to promote expression of a blistering phenotype. Here, we extend these findings to show that VZV infection upregulates the expression of keratin 15 (KRT15), a marker expressed by basal epidermal keratinocytes and hair follicles stem cells. We demonstrate that KRT15 is essential for VZV replication in the skin, since downregulation of KRT15 inhibits VZV replication in keratinocytes, while KRT15 exogenous overexpression supports viral replication. Importantly, our data show that VZV upregulation of KRT15 depends on the expression of the VZV immediate early gene ORF62. ORF62 is the only regulatory gene that is mutated in the live attenuated VZV vaccine and contains four of the five fixed mutations present in the VZV Oka vaccine. Our data indicate that the mutated vaccine ORF62 is not capable of upregulating KRT15, suggesting that this may contribute to the vaccine attenuation in skin. Taken together our data present a novel association between VZV and KRT15, which may open a new therapeutic window for a topical targeting of VZV replication in the skin via modulation of KRT15.

21. The flavor of a light charged Higgs

Abstract

The ATLAS Collaboration has recently reported a search for light-charged Higgs in $t\to H^+ b$ decay, with $H^+\to c\bar b$. An excess with a local significance of approximately $3\sigma$ is found at $m_{H^+}\approx130$ GeV, with a best-fit value of ${\rm BR}(t\to H^+b)\times {\rm BR}(H^+\to c\bar b)=(1.6\pm0.6)\times10^{-3}$. We study the implications of such a hypothetical signal in multi-Higgs doublet models. We take into account constraints from searches for other charged Higgs decays and from flavor-changing neutral current processes. Two Higgs doublet models with flavor structure dictated by natural flavor conservation (NFC), minimal flavor violation (MFV), or the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism cannot account for such excess. A three-Higgs doublet model with NFC can account for the signal. The Yukawa couplings of the neutral pseudoscalar $A$ in the down sector, $\hat Y_A^D$, should be larger by a factor of $4-6$ compared to the corresponding Yukawa couplings of the Higgs $h$, $\hat Y_h^D$. We further present two minimal scenarios, one in which a single Yukawa coupling in the down sector, $(\hat Y_A^D)_{bb}$, gives the only significant contribution, and one in which two Yukawa couplings in the up sector, $(\hat Y_A^U)_{tt}$ and $(\hat Y_A^U)_{tc}$, give the only significant contributions, and we discuss possible tests of these scenarios., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Abstract Pathogenic variants underlying Mendelian diseases often disrupt the normal physiology of a few tissues and organs. However, variant effect prediction tools that aim to identify pathogenic variants are typically oblivious to tissue contexts. Here we report a machine-learning framework, denoted “Tissue Risk Assessment of Causality by Expression for variants” (TRACEvar, https://netbio.bgu.ac.il/TRACEvar/ ), that offers two advancements. First, TRACEvar predicts pathogenic variants that disrupt the normal physiology of specific tissues. This was achieved by creating 14 tissue-specific models that were trained on over 14,000 variants and combined 84 attributes of genetic variants with 495 attributes derived from tissue omics. TRACEvar outperformed 10 well-established and tissue-oblivious variant effect prediction tools. Second, the resulting models are interpretable, thereby illuminating variants’ mode of action. Application of TRACEvar to variants of 52 rare-disease patients highlighted pathogenicity mechanisms and relevant disease processes. Lastly, the interpretation of all tissue models revealed that top-ranking determinants of pathogenicity included attributes of disease-affected tissues, particularly cellular process activities. Collectively, these results show that tissue contexts and interpretable machine-learning models can greatly enhance the etiology of rare diseases.

Efficient synchronization of single photons that are compatible with narrowband atomic transitions is an outstanding challenge, which could prove essential for photonic quantum information processing. Here we report on the synchronization of independently-generated single photons using a room-temperature atomic quantum memory. The photon source and the memory are interconnected by fibers and employ the same ladder-level atomic scheme. We store and retrieve the heralded single photons with end-to-end efficiency of $\eta_\text{e2e}=25\%$ and final anti-bunching of $g^{(2)}_\text{h}=0.023$. Our synchronization process results in over tenfold increase in the photon-pair coincidence rate, reaching a rate of more than $1000$ detected synchronized photon pairs per second. The indistinguishability of the synchronized photons is verified by a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference measurement.

Abstract

Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs) are new types of marketplaces leveraging Blockchain technology. They allow users to trade assets with Automatic Market Makers (AMM), using funds provided by liquidity providers, removing the need for order books. One such DEX, Uniswap v3, allows liquidity providers to allocate funds more efficiently by specifying an active price interval for their funds. This introduces the problem of finding an optimal strategy for choosing price intervals. We formalize this problem as an online learning problem with non-stochastic rewards. We use regret-minimization methods to show a liquidity provision strategy that guarantees a lower bound on the reward. This is true even for non-stochastic changes to asset pricing, and we express this bound in terms of the trading volume.

Scalar ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) interacting with neutrinos can induce, under certain conditions, time-dependent modifications to neutrino oscillation probabilities. The limit in which the ULDM perturbation can be treated as constant throughout the neutrino propagation time has been addressed by several previous works. We complement these by systematically analyzing the opposite limit -- accounting for the temporal-variations of the ULDM potential by solving time-dependent Schr\"odinger equations. In particular, we study a novel two-generations-like CP violating (CPV) signature unique to rapidly oscillating ULDM. 30. Bright, low-noise source of single photons at 780 nm with improved phase-matching in rubidium vapor

Abstract

Future optical quantum networks could benefit from single photons that couple well to atoms, for realizing, e.g., quantum memories and deterministic photonic gates. However, the efficient generation of such photons remains a difficult challenge. Recently, we demonstrated a bright multiplexed source of indistinguishable single photons with tunable GHz-bandwidth based on four-wave-mixing in rubidium vapor [Davidson et al. 2021 New J. Phys. 23 073050]. Here we report on an improved implementation of this photon source. The new implementation employs a frequency-detuning regime that is better phase matched, a spatial-alignment procedure using single-mode fibers, a different rubidium isotope, and higher vapor-cell transmission. Characterization of the source is performed using superconducting-nanowire detectors with higher detection efficiency and lower jitter. Our source produces single photons with detected heralding efficiency of over 20%, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of 88%, generation rate of over 100 kilo-counts per second, and signal-to-noise ratio greater than 100, making it suitable for quantum information processing with photons.

ObjectiveMinimum muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2min) measured via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a common measure during incremental exercise testing (IET). Our objective was to determine the effects of pre-to-post endurance training on SmO2min (ΔSmO2min) during an IET, using a meta-analysis.Data sourcesMEDLINE, EMBASE, and SPORTDiscus.Study selectionStudies including healthy individuals had to meet the following criteria: (1) endurance training intervention; (2) peripheral muscle NIRS; (3) incremental exercise test pre/post training; (4) SmO2 or analogous saturation parameter measured.AnalysisA PEDro scale was used for risk of bias analysis. A random effect meta-analysis model was used to synthesize the effect of training on ΔSmO2min in individual studies. Statistical heterogeneity was quantified using I2 statistic. A meta-regression was used to estimate the effect of training on the relationship between peak cycling power output (Wpeak), peak pulmonary oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak), and ΔSmO2min. A mixed-effect model was used to estimate categorical variables.ResultsFive studies met the inclusion criteria. No difference in SmO2min was detected following training pre- and post-intervention IETs. A trend for an effect of training on the relationship between Wpeak and ΔSmO2min was observed (p = 0.06).ConclusionThis meta-analysis showed no effects of endurance training on SmO2min during an IET. Our results showed a trend for an effect of training on the relationship between Wpeak and ΔSmO2min, with no effect for V˙O2peak and ΔSmO2min. It is possible that SmO2min is not affected by endurance training, and may be used as a physiological marker for improvements in submaximal performance rather than at peak.

39. Fast, noise-free atomic optical memory with 35% end-to-end efficiency

Abstract

Coherent optical memories will likely play an important role in future quantum communication networks. Among the different platforms, memories based on ladder-type orbital transitions in atomic gasses offer high bandwidth ($>100$ MHz), continuous (on-demand) readout, and low-noise operation. Here we report on an upgraded setup of our previously-reported fast ladder memory, with improved efficiency and lifetime, and reduced noise. The upgrade employs a stronger control field, wider signal beam, reduced atomic density, higher optical depth, annular optical-pumping beam, and weak dressing of an auxiliary orbital to counteract residual Doppler-broadening. For a 2 ns-long pulse, we demonstrate 53% internal efficiency, 35% end-to-end efficiency, $3\times 10^{-5}$ noise photons per pulse, and a $1/e$ lifetime of 108 ns. This combination of performances is a record for continuous-readout memories.

Abstract

Abstract Background Relaparotomy following a cesarean delivery (CD) is an infrequent complication, with inconsistency regarding risk factors and indications for its occurrence. We therefore aimed to determine risk factors and indications for a relaparotomy following a CD at a single large tertiary center. Methods A retrospective case-control single-center study (2013–2023). We identified all women who had a relaparotomy up to six weeks following a CD (study group). Maternal characteristics, obstetrical and surgical data were compared to a control group in a 1:2 ratio. Controls were women with a CD before and immediately after each case in the study group, who did not undergo a relaparotomy. Included were CDs occurring after 24 gestational weeks. CD performed at different centers and indications for repeat surgery unrelated to the primary surgery (e.g., appendicitis) were excluded. Logistic regression was used to adjust for potential confounders. Results During the study period, 131,268 women delivered at our institution. Of them, 28,280 (21.5%) had a CD, and 130 patients (0.46%) underwent a relaparotomy. Relaparotomies following a CD occurred during the first 24 h, the first week, and beyond the first week, in 59.2%, 33.1%, and 7.7% of cases, respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, relaparotomy was significantly associated with Mullerian anomalies (aOR 3.33, 95%CI 1.08–10.24, p = 0.036); uterine fibroids (aOR 3.17, 95%CI 1.11–9.05,p = 0.031); multiple pregnancy (aOR 4.1, 95%CI 1.43–11.79,p = 0.009); hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (aOR 3.46, 95%CI 1.29–9.3,p = 0.014); CD during the second stage of labor (aOR 2.54, 95%CI 1.15–5.88, p = 0.029); complications during CD (aOR 1.62, 95%CI 1.09–3.21,p = 0.045); and excessive bleeding during CD or implementation of bleeding control measures (use of tranexamic acid, a hemostatic agent, or a surgical drain) (aOR 2.23, 95%CI 1.29–4.12,p = 0.012). Indications for relaparotomy differed depending on the time elapsed from the CD, with suspected intra-abdominal bleeding (36.1%) emerging as the primary indication within the initial 24 h. Conclusion We detected several pregnancy, intrapartum, and intra-operative risk factors for the need for relaparotomy following a CD. Practitioners may utilize these findings to proactively identify women at risk, thereby potentially reducing their associated morbidity.

Abstract Flexibly updating behaviors towards others is crucial for adaptive social functioning. Previous studies have found that difficulties in flexibly updating behaviors are associated with social anxiety (SA). However, it is unclear whether such difficulties relate to actual social behaviors. The current study investigated the relationships between negative-to-positive social reversal learning, social approach behavior, and SA across time. Participants (MTurk, Time 1 = 275, Time 2 = 126, 16 weeks later) completed a performance-based social reversal-learning task. In the initial phase, participants learned that interactions with certain individuals are associated with negative outcomes, whereas interactions with other individuals are associated with positive outcomes. In the reversal phase, these associations were reversed, requiring participants to update their behaviors. The relationships between the performance in the task, SA severity, and social approach behavior reported by participants were assessed cross-sectionally and longitudinally. We found that negative-to-positive updating was negatively associated with SA severity. Furthermore, negative-to-positive updating was positively correlated with social approach behavior, both cross-sectionally and prospectively. Hence, individuals with better negative-to-positive updating at Time 1 reported significantly more social approach behaviors across time. The results support the role of negative-to-positive updating as a mechanism associated with SA and social approach, advancing and refining interpersonal and cognitive theories of SA.

BackgroundCurcumin and Qing Dai (QD) are herbal extracts that recently showed efficacy in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Since 2016, a combination of curcumin with QD (CurQD) has been employed in our center for management of active ulcerative colitis (UC).ObjectivesWe report the effectiveness and safety of CurQD therapy in children with mild-moderate UC or IBD-unclassified (IBD-U).DesignA multicenter retrospective study.MethodsChildren aged ≤OP18 years who were treated with CurQD during 2017–2021 were included. Disease activity measures were Pediatric UC Activity Index (PUCAI), and fecal calprotectin (FC). The primary outcome was a decrease in PUCAI by ≥10 points, FC normalization (≤100 µg/gr when baseline ≥300 µg/gr) or a ≥ 50% decrease in FC.ResultsOf 30 patients (60% males, mean age 14 ± 3.9 years), 15 (50%), 13 (43%), and 2 (7%) had pancolitis, left-sided colitis and proctitis, respectively. The daily medication dose was 0.5–3 gm QD with 1–4 gm curcumin. Concomitant treatment at induction was corticosteroids (19%), biologics (28%) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (40%). The mean duration of induction was 11.6 weeks [95% confidence interval (CI) 10.2–13.1, range 8–16]. IntroductionWearable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used during dynamic exercise to reflect the balance of muscle oxygen delivery and uptake. This study describes the behaviour and reliability of postexercise reoxygenation with NIRS as a function of exercise intensity at four muscle sites during an incremental cycling test. We discuss physiological components of faster and slower reoxygenation kinetics in the context of sport science and clinical applications. We hypothesised that reoxygenation would be slower at higher intensity, and that locomotor muscles would be faster than accessory muscles. We quantified test-retest reliability and agreement for each site.MethodsTwenty-one trained cyclists performed two trials of an incremental cycling protocol with 5-min work stages and 1-min rest between stages. NIRS was recorded from the locomotor vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles, and accessory lumbar paraspinal and lateral deltoid muscles. Reoxygenation time course was analysed as the half-recovery time (HRT) from the end of work to half of the peak reoxygenation amplitude during rest. Coefficient of variability (CV) between participants, standard error of the measurement (SEM) within participants, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for test-retest reliability were evaluated at 50%, 75%, and 100% peak workloads. A linear mixed-effects model was used to compare differences between workloads and muscle sites.ResultsHRT was slower with increasing workload in the VL, RF, and PS, but not DL. VL had the fastest reoxygenation (lowest HRT) across muscle sites at all workloads (HRT = 8, 12, 17 s at 50%, 75%, 100% workload, respectively). VL also had the greatest reliability and agreement. HRT was sequentially slower between muscle sites in the order of VL < RF < PS < DL, and reliability was lower than for the VL.DiscussionThis study highlights the potential for using wearable NIRS on multiple muscle sites during exercise. Reoxygenation kinetics differ between local muscle sites with increasing intensity. Moderate-to-good reliability in the VL support its increasing use in sport science and clinical applications. Lower reliability in other muscle sites suggest they are not appropriate to be used alone, but may add information when combined to better reflect systemic intensity and fatigue during exercise at different intensities.

Abstract

If ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) exists and couples to neutrinos, the neutrino oscillation probability might be significantly altered by a parametric resonance. This resonance can occur if the typical frequency of neutrino flavor-oscillations $\Delta m^2/(2E)$, where $\Delta m^2$ is the mass-squared difference of the neutrinos and $E$ is the neutrino energy, matches the oscillation frequency of the ULDM field, determined by its mass, $m_\phi$. The resonance could lead to observable effects even if the ULDM coupling is very small, and even if its typical oscillation period, given by $\tau_\phi=2\pi/m_\phi$, is much shorter than the experimental temporal resolution. Defining a small parameter $\epsilon_\phi$ to be the ratio between the contribution of the ULDM field to the neutrino mass and the vacuum value of the neutrino mass, the impact of the resonance is particularly significant if $\epsilon_\phi m_\phi L\gtrsim 4$, where $L$ is the distance between the neutrino source and the detector. Such parametric resonance can improve the fit to the KamLAND experiment measurements by about $3.5\,\sigma$ compared to standard oscillations. Abstract The strong CP problem is solved in Parity symmetric theories, with the electroweak gauge group containing SU(2) L × SU(2) R broken by the minimal set of Higgs fields. Neutrino masses may be explained by adding the same number of gauge singlet fermions as the number of generations. The neutrino masses vanish at tree-level and are only radiatively generated, leading to larger couplings of right-handed neutrinos to Standard Model particles than with the tree-level seesaw mechanism. We compute these radiative corrections and the mixing angles between left- and right-handed neutrinos. We discuss sensitivities to these right-handed neutrinos from a variety of future experiments that search for heavy neutral leptons with masses from tens of MeV to the multi-TeV scale.

Abstract Background Current evidence on chronic conditions favors promotion of health behaviors as a mean to positively impact health outcomes. In Parkinson’s disease, performing health behaviors is indicated as a means to fight the long-lasting burden of the disease. Understanding actual engagement in health behaviors and patient activation and their association to function and health-related quality of life is therefore important. Our objectives were, among people with Parkinson’s disease: (1) to characterize health behaviors including utilization of rehabilitative treatments, physical activity, and patient activation levels, and (2) to test the associations between these health behaviors and health outcomes. Methods A cross-sectional study of 88 people with Parkinson’s disease (age 66.84 ± 8.8) was conducted. Participants answered questionnaires measuring health behaviors including utilization of health professions treatments, physical activity, patient activation, and health outcomes consisting of function and health-related quality of life. Linear regression models were conducted to test associations between measured health behaviors, function and health-related quality of life. Results Participants rarely engage in rehabilitative treatments, but showed high levels of patient activation.
