The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil (YEO) on models of experimental arthritis, persistent inflammation, and nociception in mice. YEO treatment at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg reduced the infiltration of leukocytes into the joint cavities of mice submitted to zymosan-induced arthritis 6 h and 7 days after arthritis induction. At these doses, YEO treatment reduced the formation of joint edema 4 and 6 h after arthritis induction, and at a dose of 200 mg/kg, YEO treatment reduced mechanical hyperalgesia 3 and 4 h after arthritis induction. At the dose of 200 mg/kg, YEO treatment reduced interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and cartilage destruction in the zymosan-induced arthritis model, and reduced edema formation and mechanical hyperalgesia in the model of persistent inflammation (21 days) induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) in mice. YEO treatment at a dose of 200 mg/kg reduced the nociceptive response in experimental models of nociception induced by acetic acid and formalin. The YEO treatment reduced inflammatory parameters in the experimental arthritis model, and presented antiarthritic, anti-hyperalgesic, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of aromatherapy with an essential oil blend containing lavender, bergamot, ylangylang, and sweet orange, compared with placebo, on perceptions of anxiety in ICU RNs. Methods: Nurses recruited from six adult ICUs and a neonatal ICU participated in this blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study, which took place over a 30-day intervention period. Results: Although there were no statistically significant changes in anxiety pre- to postintervention or between the intervention and placebo groups, there were also no adverse events or untoward effects. The ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil is valued for its medicinal and cosmetic benefits. This study compared the volatile compounds and antioxidant capacity of six essential oils from C. odorata flowers obtained industrially by steam distillation. The volatiles were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, and total phenolic content (TPC) were measured by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry. The main components included benzyl acetate (21.78–27.82%), benzyl benzoate (12.30–18.07%), linalool (9.45–14.39%), and germacrene D (9.17–14.46%). The highest antioxidant values were shown by the sample S6 (206.50 ± 7.45 mmol TE/L, 52.03 ± 0.88 mg GAE/g), followed by S5. The multivariate analysis separated S6 and S5 from the remaining essential oils, suggesting that extraction was more influenced by the steam flow rate. Notably, the antioxidant capacity of S6 revealed a positive correlation between volatiles and TPC values. These findings denote the importance of improving empirical industrial procedures. Essential oils are responsible for many pharmacological actions and have their specific fragrance. The volatile nature of essential oil showed the effective result in the repellent actions against the mosquitoes, flies or insects. Essential oil being derived from the natural sources, but sometimes becomes the reason for allergic reactions so their toxicity evaluation is very important factor for safety reasons. The emulgel prepared using the different essential oil combinations like lavender and ylang-ylang oil was further evaluated for its dermal toxicity. Under the experimental conditions that were utilized, the cutaneous dose of emulgel formulation (2000 mg/kg) that did not induce any biochemical, haematological, anatomical, or histological signs of toxicity can be considered the no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for rats. The growing consumer demand for the development of functional foods with a number of benefits for the consumer has led to a considerable increase in the studies focused on examining different natural agents to be included in the composition of newly developed functional foods. The chemical compositions of the essential oils (EOs) of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), raspberry seed (Rubus idaeus L.), and ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata (Lam.)) were determined using gas chromatography with a mass selective detector (GC-MS). The antibacterial and antifungal activities of these EOs were examined using a high-throughput 96-well microplate bioassay procedure and the MICs of each EO against each test microorganism were determined. The results indicated significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Salmonella abony NTCC 6017, Pseudomonas aeruginosa NBIMCC 1390, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19659, Penicillium chrysogenum ATCC 28089, Fusarium moniliforme ATCC 38932, Aspergillus niger ATCC 1015, and Aspergillus flavus ATCC 9643. To explore their potential applications in food preservation, model chocolate mousse food emulsions were prepared that incorporated EOs and/or selected probiotic lactobacilli strains in both free and encapsulated forms. The inclusion of EOs and/or probiotic lactobacilli resulted in enhanced microbial safety and an extended shelf life. Furthermore, the chocolate mousse variants that were biopreserved with the inclusion of probiotic lactobacilli maintained a high viable lactobacillus cell concentration throughout the storage period. Abstract Background Nanobiomedicines have gained increasing attention for their potential to improve efficacy and are emerging as a promising therapeutic paradigm. Magnetic nanoconjugates loaded with bioactive drugs have the advantage of sustained circulation in the bloodstream and significantly reduced toxicity of therapeutic agents in a precise manner. The well-developed surface chemistry of Fe3O4 has led to the development better tools, promoting them as nanoplatforms with potential technological applications in biomedical sciences. Results Fe3O4 phytohybrids with Laxmitaru extract as the primary coating and loaded with Eugenol and Ylang-Ylang essential oils were successfully synthesized. The X-ray diffraction technique has revealed the high purity nanoparticle materials, as no additional impurity peaks were observed. Fourier transform infra-red spectra have confirmed the presence of a primary coating of Laxmitaru extract and a secondary layer of essential oil, as additional peaks and broadening are observed in drug-loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Magnetic susceptibility values indicate the material's superparamagnetic nature. Transmission electron microscopy images have ensured that the particles were spherical, monodispersed, and in the range of 4.30 nm to 13.98 nm. Antimicrobial studies show inhibition zones on the microorganisms S. Aureus and E. Coli with enhanced activity. Drug entrapment efficiency studies revealed the encapsulation of drug molecules onto Fe3O4-Laxmitaru composite. Dynamic light scattering studies confirm the increase in hydrodynamic size, indicating the loading of essential oils and the decrease in polydispersity index ensures monodispersed nanoparticles. The antioxidant study showed the essential oils retained their antioxidant activity even after they were conjugated on Fe3O4-Lax composites. Conclusions Laxmitaru phytochemical-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully conjugated with Eugenol and Ylang-Ylang essential oils. Our results provide a model therapeutic approach for the development of new alternative strategies for enhancing antimicrobial and antioxidant therapy, with potential advantages in the field of nanobiomedicine.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the phytochemical profile, oral acute toxicity, and the effect of ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata Hook. F. & Thomson) essential oil (YEO) on acute inflammation. YEO was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. For in vitro tests, YEO was assessed using cytotoxicity, neutrophil chemotaxis induced by N-formyl methionyl leucyl phenylalanine (fMLP), and phagocytic activity tests. YEO was orally administered in zymosan-induced peritonitis, carrageenan-induced leukocyte rolling, and adhesion events in the in situ microcirculation model and in carrageenan-induced paw edema models. YEO (2000 mg/kg) was also tested using an acute toxicity test in Swiss mice. YEO showed a predominance of benzyl acetate, linalool, benzyl benzoate, and methyl benzoate. YEO did not present in vitro cytotoxicity. YEO reduced the in vitro neutrophil chemotaxis induced by fMLP and reduced the phagocytic activity. The oral treatment with YEO reduced the leukocyte recruitment and nitric oxide production in the zymosan-induced peritonitis model, reduced rolling and adherent leukocyte number induced by carrageenan in the in situ microcirculation model, and reduced carrageenan-induced edema and mechanical hyperalgesia. YEO did not present signs of toxicity in the acute toxicity test. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the comparative larvicidal efficacy of com¬mercial ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oils from India and Thailand against the Aedes aegypti mosquito to be used as a guideline for Aedes mosquito control. Materials and Methods: The bioassay for the larvicidal activity of commercial ylang-ylang essen¬tial oils in this experiment was modified from the World Health Organization standard protocols. The concentration ranges at 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100, 0.125, and 0.150 ppm in each treatment were used for testing, and four replicates were used per concentration. The larval mortality was observed and recorded 24- and 48-h after exposure. Results: The results of this study clearly revealed that commercial ylang-ylang essential oils from India and Thailand were highly toxic to the larvae of the dengue vector Ae. aegypti, and Indian ylang-ylang had an LC50 value of 0.064 ppm, whereas Thai ylang-ylang had an LC50 value of 0.042 ppm after 24-h exposure. Conclusion: This study revealed the efficacy of commercial Indian and Thai ylang-ylang essential oils as natural vector control for the larval stage of the dengue vector Ae. aegypti. Usually, natural larvicide products are not commonly found in the market due to complex production processes. The results of this research support the use of commercial essential oils to aid in further control of Aedes mosquito larvae populations in the community. Introduction: From previous studies, we hypothesized that olfactory exposure to β-caryophyllene stimulates women's libido. However, Japan's sex culture is so closed that it is difficult to test this possibility without accumulating scientific evidence. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the concentration of sex-related hormones in saliva, an experimental technique that is relatively easy to obtain research permission, and to obtain a scientific basis to convince ethics committee reviewers. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate whether β-caryophyllene increases salivary testosterone concentrations associated with libido and vaginal sensation during intercourse in women. Methods: 19 women in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle participated in the study. The subjects then sat in front of the odor exposure device we had created. Each subject was exposed to dipropylene glycol for 20 minutes, followed by 3% β-caryophyllene for 20 minutes. Saliva was collected 4 times: before and after control exposure, and before and after β-caryophyllene exposure. Main Outcome Measure: Salivary testosterone and estrogen concentrations were measured with a competition ELISA. Results: β-caryophyllene significantly increased the salivary concentration of testosterone (control vs β-caryophyllene; 0.97 ± 0.05 vs 1.13 ± 0.03, P = .00, 95% confidence interval of control: 0.84–1.09, 95% confidence interval of β-caryophyllene: 1.04–1.20) but not estrogen (control vs β-caryophyllene; 1.05 ± 0.03 vs 1.07 ± 0.04, P = .69, 95% confidence interval of control: 0.96–1.12, 95% confidence interval of β-caryophyllene: 0.98–1.15). Strengths & Limitations: The personal preferences of the subjects and the order of exposure may have affected the results. Conclusion: β-caryophyllene may be a remedy with fewer side effects for women with decreased libido. We believe that β-caryophyllene may be a remedy for women with decreased libido. Chemical composition of ylang‐ylang essential oil is affected by the geographical origins of flowers used for extraction. This study aimed to determine the compositional difference between the extra, first and third grades of ylang‐ylang essential oil from Comoro Islands and Madagascar. The oils were characterized by both gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) and gas chromatography‐flame ionization detector (GC‐FID) in conjunction with principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 124 volatile compounds were identified and quantified by GC‐MS and GC‐FID. Twenty‐two compounds that made up 85% to 90% of the oils were shortlisted to compare across grades and geographical origins. The PCA showed that the ylang‐ylang essential oils are clustered according to grade and origin based on their compositions. Analysis of variance was performed to determine the statistical significance of the differences between each compound across extra, first and third grades of ylang‐ylang essential oil from Madagascar and Comoros. The oils of Madagascar are dominating in geranyl acetate, cis‐α‐farnesene, benzyl benzoate, humulene and caryophyllene, while in those of Comoros, cinnamyl acetate, benzyl salicylate, trans‐farnesyl acetate and α‐farnesene are found to be higher. Common mosquito-borne diseases in the Philippines include dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, and filariasis. Mosquito repellents are effective protective measures against mosquito bites and microencapsulation of essential oils to fabric is currently an emerging trend for mosquito repellency. Accordingly, "ylang-ylang" (Cananga odorata) is a fast-growing tree endemic to the Philippines and found to have mosquito repellent properties. This study aimed to determine the mosquito repellency of microencapsulated ylang-ylang oil applied to cotton fabrics. The difference in the mosquito repellent property between untreated and treated fabrics in different concentrations of microencapsulated ylang-ylang oil was tested. The prepared microcapsules containing 10 mL and 2.5 mL ylang-ylang oil were applied to separate cotton fabrics using a bath exhaustion method. The fabrics were examined using a scanning electron microscope and showed irregularly shaped and rough-walled microcapsules with sizes ranging 50-100 µm. The fabrics were then tested for mosquito repellency using the World Health Organization (WHO) cone test in five replicates. An untreated fabric served as negative control. The test of significance used the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the p-value was set at p < 0.05. The fabrics treated with 10 mL and 2.5 mL microcapsules showed increasing rates of mosquito repellency from 80 ± 10% to 88 ± 8.37% and from 64 ± 5.48% to 82 ± 8.37%, respectively (p < 0.05). The mosquito percent repellency showed a significantly higher % repellency in treated than the untreated fabric (p < 0.05). The fabric with microcapsules containing 10 mL of ylang-ylang oil has greater mosquito repellency than that of 2.5 mL (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study suggests the potential of urea-formaldehyde microencapsulation as an effective method in making cotton fabrics with mosquito repellent properties using ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil. Objective: The main objective of the research work was to fabricate and characterize the thixogel formulations based on corn starch containing the combination of the essential oils from ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata Lamk.) and citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) plants. Then, we investigated their safety consideration, and mosquito repellent activities. Methods: Corn starch based thixogel was prepared by modified method of thixotropic emulsion. The thixotropic properties were measured by comparing the viscosity of the thixogels before and after shaking treatment on selected days during storage for 56 days. Study of skin irritation for thixogel application on human skin was conducted for three consecutive days with modified patch test method. Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (3-5 days old) were used in mosquito repellent studies. Results :The organoleptic studies showed that the formulations of thixogel without the essential oils (F0), ylang oils 2% (F1), citronella oils 2% (F2), and ylang oils 2% + citronella oils 2% (F3) were stable during storage for 56 days. In addition, the viscosity, and irritation skin studies confirmed that all formulas had a thixotropic properties, and without any irritation on human skin. Furthermore, the combination of ylang and citronella oils on corn starch-based thixogel (F3) significantly improved repellant activity against Aedes aegypti compared to its single essential oils on corn starch-based thixogel (F1 and F2). Conclusion: These results suggest that corn starch-based thixogel is promising technology for topical administration of the essential oils as repellent agents, which are safe for humans, domestic animals and friendly. A single fraction of essential oil can often contain hundreds of compounds. Despite of the technical improvements and the enhanced selectivity currently offered by the state-of-the-art gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) instruments, the complexity of essential oils is frequently underestimated. Comprehensive two-dimensional GC coupled to time-of-flight MS (GC×GC-TOFMS) was used to improve the chemical characterization of ylang-ylang essential oil fractions recently reported in a previous one-dimensional (1D) GC study. Based on both, the enhanced chromatographic separation and the mass spectral deconvolution, 161 individual compounds were identified and labeled as potentially characteristic analytes found in both low and high boiling fractions issued from distillation of mature ylang-ylang flowers. Compared to the most recent full GC-MS characterization, this represents 75 new compounds, essentially consisting of terpenes, terpenoid esters, and alcohols.

Ylang-ylang [Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. f. & Thomson]: a barely known essential oil plant in an industry at risk. Cananga odorata is a tropical tree from the Annonaceae family, native of Indonesia. Only the forma genuina can be called ylang-ylang. Nowadays, it is mainly cultivated in the Indian Ocean Islands in order to extract the ylang-ylang essential oil for the cosmetic industry. Ylang-ylang develops on many types of soils, under high temperatures and average precipitations of 1,500 mm per year. The pollarding, the maintenance, the elimination of water sprouts and the weeding must be performed to insure a high flower yield and facilitate harvesting. Flower harvest takes place all year long but flowers and essential oils yields are higher during the dry season. Mature and fresh flowers are then distillated and fractionated to obtain essential oil. Generated incomes are important for the economy of the three main producers: Union of Comoros, Madagascar and Mayotte. However, this plant is still poorly known despite its great economic value. This lack of information is a bottleneck for solving the ylang-ylang industry problems which endanger it. Moreover, there is no improvement program of this plant despite the high added value of its essential oil, probably due to the fact that its reproduction biology is far from being known. A thorough study of the plant and its essential oil could generate information necessary to solve the aforementioned problems, maintain and develop the ylang-ylang industry.

Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oils (EO) has several active components with flora odorants which are compatible with several foods and desserts. Incorporation of Ylang-ylang EO into biodegradable polymers potentially produce functional packaging, releasing desirable aroma which is attractive to consumers. This research aimed to enhance active function of biodegradable polyester blend films namely polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) using cast extrusion with Ylang-ylang EO. Characterizations of the film include morphology, relaxation, infrared absorption and packaging properties. Adding EO gave a smoother microstructure and surface topography and modified the crystal lattice of the PBS phase. Infrared absorption indicated EO-polymer interaction involving C–H stretching vibration. Polymer relaxation influenced transport of gas molecules through PBAT/PBS/EO matrices. Decreased α-relaxation temperature suggested plasticization effects of the amorphous PBAT phase by EO, increasing oxygen and water vapor permeability by 2.52 and 1.16 times, respectively. Polymer relaxation and crystallinity influenced transport of non-polar oxygen through PBAT/PBS/EO matrices. Moreover, films containing EO effectively delayed fungal growth in pandan pudding and layered pudding by more than 3 days due to the release of volatiles that exhibited antifungal activities. Ylang-ylang essential oil (YEO), obtained from the flowers of the tropical tree Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. f. & Thomson (family Annonaceae), has been largely used in the traditional medicine with many uses, including anxiety and altered neuronal states. Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition with a high incidence of comorbidities, such as anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders, that drastically affect the patient's quality of life. The currently available drugs used for the management of neuropathic pain are inadequate due to poor efficacy and tolerability, highlighting the medicinal need of a better pharmacotherapy. Several clinical studies have reported that massage or inhalation with selected essentials oils reduces symptoms associated to pain and anxiety. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic properties of YEO and its efficacy in reducing neuropathy-associated mood alterations. The analgesic properties were tested in the spared nerve injury (SNI) model using male mice. Anxiolytic, antidepressant, and locomotor properties were also evaluated using behavioural tests. Finally, the YEO mechanism of action was investigated in the spinal cord and hippocampus of neuropathic mice. Oral administration of YEO (30 mg/kg) reduced SNI-induced neuropathic pain and ameliorates pain-related anxiety symptoms that appeared 28 days after surgery. YEO reduced the expression of MAPKs, NOS2, p-p65, markers of neuroinflammation, and promoted normalizing effect on neurotrophin levels (BDNF). YEO induced neuropathic pain relief and ameliorated pain-associated anxiety, representing an interesting candidate for the management of neuropathic pain conditions and pain-related comorbidities. A single fraction of essential oil can often contain hundreds of compounds. Despite of the technical improvements and the enhanced selectivity currently offered by the state-of-the-art gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) instruments, the complexity of essential oils is frequently underestimated. Comprehensive two-dimensional GC coupled to time-of-flight MS (GC⨰GC-TOFMS) was used to improve the chemical characterization of ylang-ylang essential oil fractions recently reported in a previous one-dimensional (1D) GC study. Based on both, the enhanced chromatographic separation and the mass spectral deconvolution, 161 individual compounds were identified and labeled as potentially characteristic analytes found in both low and high boiling fractions issued from distillation of mature ylang-ylang flowers. Compared to the most recent full GC-MS characterization, this represents 75 new compounds, essentially consisting of terpenes, terpenoid esters, and alcohols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Ylang-ylang essential oil is an important raw material for the fragrance industry. Despite its economic importance, to the best of our knowledge, no study has yet been undertaken to assess the chemical polymorphism of the different production areas. This underestimated variability is an interesting source of raw material for perfumers. That is why the variation in the chemical composition of four fractions of the essential oils extracted from Cananga odorata, grown in four locations Grande Comore, Mayotte, Nossi Bé and Ambanja, was studied. A total of 119 compounds, representing 85.7-96.4% of the total essential oil composition, were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and quantified by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Thirty-two compounds previously unreported in ylang-ylang essential oil were identified. The distinction between the Comoros and Madagascar groups was made on the basis of the chemical classes. It was possible to significantly distinguish the Grande Comore and Mayotte essential oil samples, as well as the Ambanja and Nossi Bé essential oil samples, on the basis of their main compounds. The aromatic compounds profile for the origin of each essential oil fraction was established. Regression trees were built, allowing the provenance of the essential oils prepared at the laboratory level to be easily differentiated on the basis of a limited number of major compounds. Abstract: Ylang–Ylang oil is used in the food industry as a flavor ingredient. It is a complex chemical mixture in the form of an essential oil extracted by water or water-and-steam distillation from the fresh flowers of Cananga odorata Hook. f. & Thomson. Ylang–Ylang oil has been reported to cause dermal sensitization reactions in animals and humans, but it is unclear what constituent(s) within the essential oil comprise the offending agent(s) and whether some Ylang–Ylang oils that have had certain constituent(s) removed are any less prone to cause such allergic reactions. There is no indication in the literature that food exposure to Ylang–Ylang oil has caused allergic reactions. One subchronic inhalation toxicity study, involving Ylang–Ylang oil as part of a larger fragrance raw materials mixture, gave no indication of causing adverse effects, but the relevance to risk assessment of oral food flavoring use exposures is likely minimal. No further toxicity data for Ylang–Ylang oil have been reported. Notwithstanding the foregoing, Ylang–Ylang oil has a long history of fragrance and food flavoring use, with no indication that its estimated consumption from food flavoring use (0.0001mg/kg/day) has led to any adverse human health effects. These data indicate that at the current level of intake as a food ingredient, Ylang–Ylang oil does not pose a health risk to humans. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study provides further evidence for the impact of the aromas of plant essential oils on aspects of cognition and mood in healthy participants. One hundred and forty-four volunteers were randomly assigned to conditions of ylang-ylang aroma, peppermint aroma, or no aroma control. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Cognitive Drug Research computerized assessment battery, with mood scales completed before and after cognitive testing. The analysis of the data revealed significant differences between conditions on a number of the factors underpinning the tests that constitute the battery. Peppermint was found to enhance memory whereas ylang-ylang impaired it, and lengthened processing speed. In terms of subjective mood peppermint increased alertness and ylang-ylang decreased it, but significantly increased calmness. These results provide support for the contention that the aromas of essential oils can produce significant and idiosyncratic effects on both subjective and objective assessments of aspects of human behavior. Quality control of essential oil blends and the discovery of potential adulterations and product fraud is a significant challenge within the natural oil and perfume industry. In this research, total chromatogram average mass spectra (TCAMS), created from the GC-MS three-way raw data, were employed for the characterisation of complex samples of perfumes and essential oil blends. A multivariate approach for curve resolution was used to resolve the TCAMS of pure essential oils within such perfume and essential oil blends. Resolved TCAMS, in combination with unsupervised pattern recognition approaches revealed the distillation grade and origin of used ylang-ylang oils in perfume mixtures. TCAMS resolved from the essential oil blends were used with a supervised machine learning classification model to identify oils, used in creating the blends. Quantification was performed using a multivariate curve resolution approach, resulting in relative errors of prediction lower than 17.84% with root mean square errors of prediction smaller than 3.43.
