1. Serum biochemical reference interval determination in wild Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica)

Abstract

Determining reference intervals (RI) is a valuable asset for assessing the health of wildlife species. This is the first study to establish serum biochemical RIs in Siberian weasels. Forty-two healthy free-ranging Siberian weasels were captured live and brought to Seoul Wildlife Center between June 2021 and August 2022. Blood samples from 42 healthy Siberian weasels of both sexes were used to calculate RIs. An automated analyser was used to perform serum biochemistry profiles. The American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology recommendations were used to calculate a nonparametric RI with 90% confidence intervals. The RIs of albumin, total protein, globulin, calcium, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, phosphorus, amylase, cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and creatine kinase were determined. The RIs established in this study will serve as a good starting point for analysing serum biochemical data in Siberian weasels.

Abstract

Halocynthia roretzi (phylum Cordata), also called ‘sea pineapples’, live in shallow coastal waters and typically feed on plankton and detritus that they filter from seawater. It has been reported that symbiotic microflora associated with H. roretzi act as protective agents that strengthen its immune system or control energy metabolism. This study analyzed the culturable microflora from the coelomic fluid of the sea pineapple using MALDI-biotyping and 16S rRNA sequencing, combining a recent technology with the conventional method of bacteria identification. The MALDI-biotyper enabled the classification of the symbiotic microflora into 5 groups based on the specific patterns of their mass spectrum. The 16S rRNA sequencing was then used to establish the identity of the dominant bacteria in 4 groups, later revealed as 2 groups of Vibrio spp., Shwanella spp. and Bacillus spp. MALDI-biotyping was applied for the identification of microorganisms directly from cultured agar, and, coupled with numerical taxonomic analyses, we determined the major microflora associated with H. roretzi.

Abstract

Using 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data {collected} with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the measurements of the masses, and the first measurements of the instrinsic widths, of the $\Sigma_c(2455)^+$ and $\Sigma_c(2520)^+$ charmed baryons. We find $M(\Sigma_c(2455)^+)-M(\Lambda_c^+) = 166.17\pm 0.05^{+0.16}_{-0.07}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2455)^+) = 2.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.3\ {\rm MeV/c^2}$, $M(\Sigma_c(2520)^+)-M(\Lambda_c^+) = 230.9 \pm 0.5 ^{+0.5}_{-0.1}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, and $\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2520)^+) = 17.2^{+2.3\ +3.1}_{-2.1\ -0.7}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These measurements can be used to test models of the underlying quark structure of the $\Sigma_c$ states.

Abstract

We report measurements of the branching fractions of singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays Λc+→pη and Λc+→pπ0 using the full Belle data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980.6 fb-1. The data were collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric energy collider. A clear Λc+ signal is seen in the invariant mass distribution of pη. The fitted number of signal events of the Λc+→pη process is 7734±263; from this, we measure the ratio of branching fractions B(Λc+→pη)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=[2.258±0.077(stat)±0.122(syst)]×10-2, from which we infer the branching fraction B(Λc+→pη)=[1.42±0.05(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10-3. In addition, no significant signal for Λc+→pπ0 is found, so an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Λc+→pπ0)

Abstract

We perform a search for new physics using final states consisting of three leptons and a large imbalance in transverse momentum resulting from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use data corresponding to 5.8fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. Our main objective is to investigate possible new low-momentum (down to 5GeV/c) multileptonic final states not investigated by LHC experiments. Relative to previous CDF analyses, we expand the geometric and kinematic coverage of electrons and muons and utilize tau leptons that decay hadronically. Inclusion of tau leptons is particularly important for supersymmetry (SUSY) searches. The results are consistent with standard-model predictions within 1.85σ. By optimizing our event selection to increase sensitivity to the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) SUSY model, we set limits on the associated production of chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino, the SUSY partners of the electroweak gauge bosons. We exclude cross sections up to 0.1 pb and chargino masses up to 168GeV/c2 at 95% C.L., for a suitable set of mSUGRA parameters. Abstract

The effects of sulfur passivation on liquid‐phase‐epitaxy‐grown n‐type InGaP and AlGaAs surfaces have been studied using x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surfaces were simultaneously prepared through degreasing and the use of an aqueous (NH4)2Sx treatment in air. For InGaP, sulfur atoms initially reacted with both surface In and Ga atoms and reacted negligibly with P atoms. The band bending was reduced by 0.7 eV compared to a sputter‐cleaned surface. Presumably, sulfur eliminated P‐vacancy‐related gap states by occupying P sites and forming In–S and Ga–S bonds. By postheat treatment at 180 °C, S atoms were not removed from the surface and band bending was reduced further by 0.1 eV. For AlGaAs, S atoms initially reacted with Ga and As, but this treatment could not remove the Al oxide previously formed in the air. Postheat treatment at 180 °C simply induced S redistribution from As to Ga and As desorption, which reduced the band bending by 0.3 eV compared to the sputter‐cleaned surface—a result similar...

Abstract

Introduction Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI) is underdiagnosed and faecal elastase (FE) testing underutilised. The impact of age, sex, ethnicity, pre-existing pancreatic endocrine dysfunction and indication for testing on faecal elastase results are poorly studied. Previous small studies have suggested an age related decline in FE levels. Our Institution serves an ethnically mixed population in South London and we have described previously un-know ethnicity differences in colonic polyp prevalence,1 intestinal metaplasia in Barrett’s oesophagus2 and vitamin D deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease.3 Methods A retrospective study on 530 patients who underwent FE testing from September 2011 to September 2015 was carried out. Patient demographics were retrieved from hospital records. Ethnicity was categorised as ‘Indian-subcontinent’ and “Non-Indian-subcontinent’ as previously described (1). Paediatric cases (age less than 1) and adults with incomplete data were excluded from analyses. These were performed using Analyse-it Version 2.30 for Microsoft Excel. 494 cases were analysed. Results Mean age of study participants was 50.7 (sd 22.7), there were 251 females and 243 males. The mean FE in our population was 381µg/g (sd 166). 89/494 were diagnosed with PEI. There was no significant difference in FE result when analysed for age, sex, ethnicity and history of weight loss. No age related differences were found when analysed for mean age in those with normal v abnormal FE results (20.2 v 52.9, p = n.s.), age v FE level or age v FE level in those with PEI. Patients with pre-existing diabetes mellitus were significantly more likely to have PEI (DM v no DM: FE low in 28 v 16%, p = 0.03). Patients presenting with unexplained diarrhoea were significantly more likely to have PEI (diarrhoea v no diarrhoea: FE low in 20.5 v 10.6, p = 0.009). Conclusion This is the first study investigating the effects ethnicity and indication for testing on FE result and the largest study looking at the effect of age. Contrary to earlier smaller studies we found no relationship to age. We identified that patients with diarrhoea rather than isolated weight loss have a higher detection rate for PEI. We confirmed previous observations that patients with diabetes have a higher rate of PEI. FE testing should routinely be carried out in patients with unexplained diarrhoea. 30 páginas, 12 figuras, 8 tablas.-- PACS numbers: 14.40Nd;13.25.Hw;29.85.Fj.-- CDF Collaboration: et al., The collection of a large number of B-hadron decays to hadronic final states at the CDF II Detector is possible due to the presence of a trigger that selects events based on track impact parameters. However, the nature of the selection requirements of the trigger introduces a large bias in the observed proper-decay-time distribution. A lifetime measurement must correct for this bias, and the conventional approach has been to use a Monte Carlo simulation. The leading sources of systematic uncertainty in the conventional approach are due to differences between the data and the Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we present an analytic method for bias correction without using simulation, thereby removing any uncertainty due to the differences between data and simulation. This method is presented in the form of a measurement of the lifetime of the B- using the mode B-→D0π-. The B- lifetime is measured as τB-=1.663±0.023±0.015 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a candidate molecule for influencing the clinical response to antidepressant treatment. The aims of this study were to determine the relationship between the Val66Met polymorphism in the BDNF gene and the response to mirtazapine in 243 Korean subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD). The reduction in the Hamilton Depression score over the 8-week treatment period was not influenced by BDNF V66M genotypes. A marginal effect of genotype on somatic anxiety score was observed at baseline (P = 0.047 in the dominant model). However, genotype–time interaction had no effect on somatic anxiety score after the 8-week a treatment period. Plasma BDNF levels tended to increase during mirtazapine treatment, although without statistical significance (P = 0.055). After 8 weeks of mirtazapine treatment, plasma BDNF levels were higher in Met allele homozygotes (1499.7 ± 370.6 ng/mL) than in Val allele carriers (649.7 ± 158.5 ng/mL, P = 0.049). Our results do not support the hypothesis that the Val66Met promoter polymorphism in the BDNF gene influences the therapeutic response to mirtazapine in Korean MDD patients. However, our data indicate that this polymorphism results in increased plasma BDNF after mirtazapine treatment.

Abstract

We report on a search for the pair production of leptoquarks and colored leptons in e + e − annihilations t center-of-mass energies from 50 to 60.8 GeV, using the AMY detector at TRISTAN. No evidence for such particles is found and 95% CL mass limits are given.

Abstract

The authors present results of a search for anomalous production of events containing a charged lepton ({ell}, either e or {mu}) and a photon ({gamma}), both with high transverse momentum, accompanied by additional signatures, X, including missing transverse energy (E{sub T}) and additional leptons and photons. We use the same kinematic selection criteria as in a previous CDF search, but with a substantially larger data set, 305 pb{sup -1}, a p{bar p} collision energy of 1.96 TeV, and the upgraded CDF II detector. We find 42 {ell}{gamma}E{sub T} events versus a standard model expectation of 37.3 {+-} 5.4 events. The level of excess observed in Run I, 16 events with an expectation of 7.6 {+-} 0.7 events (corresponding to a 2.7{sigma} effect), is not supported by the new data. In the signature of {ell}{ell}{gamma} + X we observe 31 events versus an expectation of 23.0 {+-} 2.7 events. In this sample we find no events with an extra photon or E{sub T} and so find no events like the one ee{gamma}{gamma}E{sub T} event observed in Run I.

Abstract

A search for new particles (X) that decay to electron or muon pairs has been performed using approximately 200 pb{sup -1} of pp collision data at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Limits on {sigma}(pp{yields}X)BR(X{yields}ll) are presented as a function of dilepton invariant mass m{sub ll}>150 GeV/c{sup 2}, for different spin hypotheses (0, 1, or 2). The limits are approximately 25 fb for m{sub ll}>600 GeV/c{sup 2}. Lower mass bounds for X from representative models beyond the standard model including heavy neutral gauge bosons are presented.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the ratio of top-quark branching fractions R = B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq), where q can be a b, s, or a d quark, using lepton-plus-jets and dilepton data sets with an integrated luminosity of approximately 162 pb(-1) collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run II of the Tevatron. The measurement is derived from the relative numbers of tt events with different multiplicity of identified secondary vertices. We set a lower limit of R > 0.61 at 95% confidence level.

Abstract

The search for pair production of scalar top quarks in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb-f of pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab was discussed. It was found that in this mode each t1 decayed into a τ lepton and a b quark. The events with two τ's, one decaying leptonically and one decaying hadronically and two jets were searched. It was observed that a 95% confidence level lower limit was set on the t 1 mass at 122 GeV/c2 for Br(t1 → τb).

Abstract

We have measured the number of like-sign (LS) and opposite-sign (OS) lepton pairs arising from double semileptonic decays of $b$ and $\bar{b}$-hadrons, pair-produced at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data samples were collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) during the 1992-1995 collider run by triggering on the existence of $\mu \mu$ and $e \mu$ candidates in an event. The observed ratio of LS to OS dileptons leads to a measurement of the average time-integrated mixing probability of all produced $b$-flavored hadrons which decay weakly, $\bar{\chi} = 0.152 \pm 0.007$ (stat.) $\pm 0.011$ (syst.), that is significantly larger than the world average $\bar{\chi} = 0.118 \pm 0.005$., Comment: 47 pages, 10 figures, 15 tables Submitted to Phys. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a new resin monomer on the microleakage of composite resin restorations. By adding new methoxylated Bis-GMA (Bis-M-GMA, 2,2-bis(4-(2- methoxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl) propane) having low viscosity, the content of TEGDMA which has adverse effects on polymerization shrinkage might be decreased. As a result, microleakage might be improved. 2 ㎜ × 2 ㎜ × 2 ㎜ cavities with occlusal margins in enamel and gingival margins in dentin were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of 40 extracted human premolars. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into four groups and restored with Clearfil SE bond (Kuraray, Japan) and one of experimental composite resins; EX1, Experimental composite resin1 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 40 ㎚ nanofillers); EX2, Experimental composite resin2 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 20 ㎚ nanofillers); EX3, Experimental composite resin3 (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA = 70/30 wt%, 40 ㎚ nanofillers); and Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE, USA) was filled as a control group. The restored teeth were thermocycled, and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. The teeth were sectioned buccolingually with a low speed diamond saw and evaluated for microleakage under stereomicroscope. The data were statistically analyzed by Pearson Chi-Square test and Fisher Exact test (p = 0.05). The microleakage scores seen at the enamel margin were significantly lower than those of dentin margin (p = 0.007). There were no significant differences among the composite resins in the microleakage scores within each margin (p > 0.05). Bis-M-GMA, a new resin monomer having low viscosity, might in part replace high viscous Bis-GMA and might improve the quality of composite resin.

Abstract

QED processes up to O(α 4 ) have been studied at center-of-mass energies between 50 and 57 GeV using the AMY detector at TRISTAN. A possible substructure of the electron and muon is investigated in terms of chiral invariant contact interactions and also in terms of excited lepton production. The differential cross section data for e + e − →e + e − are consistent with the standard model at a confidence level of only 3.5%. From the absence of excited lepton production, we establish new upper limits on the coupling to excited electrons of mass up to 56 GeV/ c 2 and on the coupling to excited muons of mass up to 52 GeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

A search for pair production for fourth-generation sequential leptons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at a center-of-mass energy ..sqrt..s = 56 GeV is reported. Event topologies corresponding to the cases where one particle decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically as well as those where both particles decay hadronically were explored. We set a 95%-confidence-level lower limit of 27.6 GeV/c/sup 2/ for the mass of a fourth-generation lepton.

Abstract

Postural control is composed of the integration of vision, vestibular system, and proprioceptive sense along with the balanced control of the musculoskeletal system [1,2]. Muscle fatigue can be defined as the decrease in the maximum muscular strength production capacity due to high intensity or prolonged exercise during physical activity [3,4]. Most studies related to muscle fatigue and postural control use isokinetic dynamometers. Angular speed has mostly been used, being divided into slow [5,6] and fast angular speeds [7,8]. The fast angular speed is mainly used for low intensity, long-duration exercise and the slow angular speed is used for high intensity, short-duration exercise [9,10]. Hence, an understanding of the change in postural control capabilities according to fatigue induction properties of various movements such as plantar flexion and dorsiflexion is deemed necessary. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of muscle fatigue on ankle joint and the fatigue protocols of postural control during single-leg stance. The subjects of this study were 24 healthy adult women. Fatigue was induced on plantar flexion and dorsiflexion with an isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 30 °/s and 120 °/s. Among the anteroposterior plane factors, plantar and dorsiflexion resulted in decreased postural control during single-leg stance after fatigue induction using a plantar and dorsiflexion fatigue protocol at an angular velocity of 30 °/s. No change was observed in the postural control during single-leg stance postural control on application of the fatigue protocol at an angular velocity of 120 °/s. Plantar and dorsiflexion did not differ significantly with the application of the fatigue protocol at angular velocities of 30 °/s and 120 °/s. Among the mediolateral plane factors, postural control diminished during single-leg stance after fatigue induction on application of the plantar and dorsiflexion fatigue protocol at an angular velocity of 30 °/s. On application of the fatigue protocol an angular velocity of 120 °/s, however, no change in the postural control was observed during single-leg stance. Thus, the plantar and dorsiflexion fatigue protocol applied at an angular velocity of 30 °/s resulted in decreased single-leg stance postural control compared to that observed at an angular velocity of 120 °/s. In summary, during high-intensity, short-duration exercise involving plantar and dorsiflexion at an angular velocity of 30 °/s, fatigue at 50% of the maximum plantar flexion torque might result in reduced single-leg stance postural control.

47. The Moderating Effect of Serum Vitamin D on the Relationship between Beta-amyloid Deposition and Neurodegeneration.

Abstract

Objective: Previous studies have reported that vitamin D deficiency increased the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia in older adults. However, little is known about how vitamin D is involved in the pathophysiology of AD. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association and interaction of serum vitamin D levels with in vivo AD pathologies including cerebral beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and neurodegeneration in nondemented older adults., Methods: 428 Nondemented older adults were recruited from the Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease, a prospective cohort that began in 2014. All participants underwent comprehensive clinical assessments, measurement of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), and multimodal brain imaging including Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Global PiB deposition was measured for the Aβ biomarker. Intracranial volume-adjusted hippocampal volume (HVa) was used as a neurodegeneration biomarker., Results: Overall, serum 25(OH)D level was not associated with either Aβ deposition or HVa after controlling for age, sex, apolipoprotein E ε4 positivity, and vascular risk factors. However, serum 25(OH)D level had a significant moderating effect on the association between Aβ and neurodegeneration, with lower serum 25(OH)D level significantly exacerbating cerebral Aβ-associated hippocampal volume loss (B = 34.612, p = 0.008)., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that lower serum vitamin D levels may contribute to AD by exacerbating Aβ-associated neurodegeneration in nondemented older adults. Further studies to explore the potential therapeutic effect of vitamin D supplementation on the progression of AD pathology will be necessary.

Objective: We intended to investigate the relationships between visual sensory impairment (VSI) or auditory sensory impairment (ASI) and brain pathological changes associated with cognitive decline in older adults., Methods: We primarily tried to examine whether each sensory impairment is related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, specifically beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition, through both cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches in cognitively unimpaired older adults. Self-report questionnaires on vision and hearing status were administered at the baseline. Neuroimaging scans including brain [ 11 C] Pittsburgh Compound B PET and MRI, as well as clinical assessments, were performed at baseline and 2-year follow-up., Results: Cross-sectional analyses showed that the VSI-positive group had significantly higher Aβ deposition than the VSI-negative group, whereas there was no significant association between ASI positivity and Aβ deposition. Longitudinal analyses revealed that VSI positivity at baseline was significantly associated with increased Aβ deposition over 2 years (β = 0.153, p = 0.025), although ASI positivity was not (β = 0.045, p = 0.518). VSI positivity at baseline was also significantly associated with greater atrophic changes in AD-related brain regions over the 2-year follow-up period (β = -0.207, p = 0.005), whereas ASI positivity was not (β = 0.024, p = 0.753). Neither VSI nor ASI positivity was related to cerebrovascular injury, as measured based on the white matter hyperintensity volume., Conclusion: The findings suggest that VSI is probably related to AD-specific pathological changes, which possibly mediate the reported relationship between VSI and cognitive decline. In contrast, ASI appears not associated with AD pathologies but may contribute to cognitive decline via other mechanisms.

Abstract

Gelsolin is known as one of the actin-binding proteins capable of severing and capping filamentous actin, and of undergoing structural changes in the presence of calcium ions to interact with actin filaments. In this study, single-particle 3D reconstruction using electron microscopy (EM) revealed that, in the presence of calcium, the structure of gelsolin undergoes structural changes before interacting with actin. These differences are subtle with similarities, as confirmed by the EM map. According to the results of the molecular dynamics simulations, these nuanced structural differences primarily manifest at the domain level when calcium is present. These results provide structural evidence that, in the presence of calcium, gelsolin enters a phase of conformational preparation to transition into the active state. This process enables gelsolin to bind to actin, whereupon gelsolin undergoes more drastic structural changes upon interaction with actin filaments, which allows it to participate in binding and severing to regulate the cytoskeleton. 50. Functional and connectivity correlates associated with Parkinson's disease psychosis: a systematic review.

Abstract

Neural underpinnings of Parkinson's disease psychosis remain unclear to this day with relatively few studies and reviews available. Using a systematic review approach, here, we aimed to qualitatively synthesize evidence from studies investigating Parkinson's psychosis-specific alterations in brain structure, function or chemistry using different neuroimaging modalities. PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases were searched for functional MRI (task-based and resting state), diffusion tensor imaging, PET and single-photon emission computed tomography studies comparing Parkinson's disease psychosis patients with Parkinson's patients without psychosis. We report findings from 29 studies (514 Parkinson's psychosis patients, mean age ± SD = 67.92 ± 4.37 years; 51.36% males; 853 Parkinson's patients, mean age ± SD = 66.75 ± 4.19 years; 55.81% males). Qualitative synthesis revealed widespread patterns of altered brain function across task-based and resting-state functional MRI studies in Parkinson's psychosis patients compared with Parkinson's patients without psychosis. Similarly, white matter abnormalities were reported in parietal, temporal and occipital regions. Hypo-metabolism and reduced dopamine transporter binding were also reported whole brain and in sub-cortical areas.
