BackgroundExcessive radon exposure is considered the second risk factor for lung cancer. Since the opening of the subway in a city of Zhejiang Province, the exposure level of radioactive gas radon in subway stations and its impact on occupational health have become one of the important issues of public concern. ObjectiveTo monitor the radon concentration of subways in a city in Zhejiang Province and explore the effect of radon exposure on chromosome aberration and micronuclei in the working population. MethodsA total of 55 vehicle control rooms of 55 stations affiliated to two different subway lines in a city were measured for one year; the 110 ticket offices and 55 security checkpoints from the same 55 stations were measured from 16 March to 14 June. The radon concentrations were compared by job types, subway lines, and seasons referring to Measurement methods for determination of radon in environmental air (HJ 1212-2021). Peripheral blood lymphocyte chromosome aberration and micronucleus analyses were conducted in 165 subway workers from monitoring sites for three different job types, then the influencing factors were analyzed. The detection methods were adopted from the standards of Test and assessment of chromosomal aberrations on occupational health examinations for radiation workers (GBZ/T 248-2014) and Standard for the method of micronucleus detection in lymphocytes on occupational health examination for radiation workers and exposure dose estimation (GBZ/T 328-2023). ResultsThe radon concentration range of the target subways in Zhejiang Province was 10-320 Bq·m−3, all lower than the national limit (≤400 Bq·m−3). The differences in radon radioactivity levels among different lines, job types, and time segments were statistically significant (P0.05). Chromosome aberration and micronuclei varied by age, subway station seniority, and smoking (P0.05). ConclusionThe radon concentration in the target subway system is at a normal level. The rates of chromosomal aberration and micronucleus formation vary by jobs, but both are lower than the corresponding national limits. Therefore, radon exposure has not yet caused outstanding health impact on the subway workers.

ObjectiveAssess the level of radiation-related knowledge (RRK) and nuclear energy-related knowledge (NERK) among residents near the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant, the first project adopted the Advanced Passive Pressurized Water Reactor (AP1000) technology.MethodsIn this study, respondents were selected using stratified multi-stage random sampling for residents aged 18 years and above living within 30 kilometers of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station. Respondents were surveyed face-to-face by investigators who received standardized training. The results of the survey were collated and analysed to assess the RRK and NERK levels of the respondents from both subjective and objective perspectives, and the anxiety levels were assessed using the Likert Scale. Factors affecting RRK, NERK and anxiety levels of residents were analysed using multiple linear regression analysis.ResultsThe study interviewed 751 individuals. Participants correctly answered an average of 2.76 out of 7 objective radiation knowledge questions, yielding a 39.4% RRK cognition rate. For nuclear energy knowledge, the average was 2.14 out of 7, resulting in a 30.5% NERK cognition rate. Spearman’s correlation and multiple linear regression analyses revealed that higher education and younger age were positively correlated with RRK and NERK. Gender significantly influenced NERK, with males scoring higher than females. Anxiety levels were inversely related to age and directly related to education. Regression analyses also indicated that occupation affected nuclear-related anxiety, and married and unmarried individuals exhibited higher anxiety levels than widowed individuals.ConclusionResidents near the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station showed improvements in RRK and NERK, but levels remained low. Both RRK and NERK correlated with age and education, while NERK was also linked to gender. Anxiety among residents was associated with age, education, occupation, and marital status. These findings highlight the need for improved public education on RRK and NERK, effective engagement strategies, and measures to address residents’ anxiety to enhance decision-making and social trust regarding nuclear safety.

The efficient utilization of biomass energy and the optimal operation of integrated renewable energy sources in virtual power plants have become critical issues that need addressing to achieve carbon neutrality targets in rural areas. This paper introduces a model for rural biomass energy generation based on the characteristics of rural biogas availability, fermentation efficiency, and utilization status. A model for a rural virtual power plant is proposed, taking into account the flexible response capacity of renewable energy sources consumption and load demand response. Additionally, the correlated uncertainties of photovoltaic and wind turbine outputs are addressed by leveraging the flexible biogas power generation in the rural virtual power plant. The scenario generation method is proposed based on the Copula function to describe the correlated uncertainties. Aiming to minimize the system operating cost while ensuring the safe operation of the system, a two-stage distributionally robust optimization operation model for the rural virtual power plant is proposed. The dual vertices fixing based algorithm is developed to solve the two-stage distributionally robust optimal operation problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model and method effectively reduce over-robustness by addressing correlated uncertainties and achieve the safe, economical, and green operation of the rural energy system under uncertain conditions.

ObjectivesThis work aims to establish a dataset of ratios between tissue free water tritium (TFWT) and organically bound tritium (OBT) (containing both exchangeable and non-exchangeable OBT) in different types of seafood from Zhejiang province, China, thus to provide references for rapid screening of potential contamination of tritium in biological samples.MethodsFive types of seafood (fish, prawn, mussel, crab and kelp) were collected from Jiaxing, Ningbo, Zhoushan, Taizhou and Wenzhou city in Zhejiang Province in 2022, and measured for TFWT and OBT using tube furnace combustion system and liquid scintillation counting.ResultsThe observed activity concentrations of TFWT and OBT in this study were within the range of 1.01-10.09 Bq/L and 0.51-7.61 Bq/L, respectively. No significant difference in OBT/TFWT ratio was observed among different types of seafood (p > 0.05), among the geographic distribution of the five cities (p > 0.05), nor among the area of coastline, fishing ground and island (p > 0.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference in the OBT/TFWT ratio between seafood from area with and without nuclear power plant operation (p > 0.05). The mean OBT/TFWT ratio of fish, prawn, mussel, crab and kelp was 0.37 ± 0.19, 0.48 ± 0.27, 0.63 ± 0.33, 0.82 ± 0.50, and 0.64 ± 0.37, respectively. The mean and range of OBT/TFWT ratios were 0.59 ± 0.37 and 0.15-2.09 in all seafood collected from the five cities in Zhejiang Province, respectively.ConclusionsOur results indicate that tritium in seafood from coastal cities in Zhejiang Province is at the background level, and the operation of nuclear power plants in the province has no notable impact on the radioactivity levels of tritium in local marine biota. This study filled the gap in OBT/TFWT ratios in seafood, which provides new dataset for rapid detection of tritium contamination in nuclear emergencies.

This work aims to evaluate the effects of the operation of Qinshan nuclear Power Plant (QNPP) on tritium (3H) and carbon-14 (14C) levels in seafood and assess the health risks caused by seafood consumption. Five kinds of seafood, including marine fish, prawn, razor clam, crabs, and seaweed, were collected from QNPP and the sea around Hangzhou Bay. The activity concentrations of tissue free water tritium (TFWT), organically bound tritium (OBT) and 14C were determined, respectively, and the annual intake and annual effective dose (AED) were calculated. The results showed that the TFWT, OBT, and 14C activity concentrations of the seafood in the surrounding area of QNPP ranged from 2.00 to 74.75 Bq/L,

ObjectivesModel prediction of radioactivity levels around nuclear facilities is a useful tool for assessing human health risks and environmental impacts. We aim to develop a model for forecasting radioactivity levels in the environment and food around the world’s first AP 1000 nuclear power unit.MethodsIn this work, we report a pilot study using time-series radioactivity monitoring data to establish Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models for predicting radioactivity levels. The models were screened by Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), and the model accuracy was evaluated by mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).ResultsThe optimal models, ARIMA (0, 0, 0) × (0, 1, 1)4, and ARIMA (4, 0, 1) were used to predict activity concentrations of 90Sr in food and cumulative ambient dose (CAD), respectively. From the first quarter (Q1) to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023, the predicted values of 90Sr in food and CAD were 0.067–0.77 Bq/kg, and 0.055–0.133 mSv, respectively. The model prediction results were in good agreement with the observation values, with MAPEs of 21.4 and 22.4%, respectively. From Q1 to Q4 of 2024, the predicted values of 90Sr in food and CAD were 0.067–0.77 Bq/kg and 0.067–0.129 mSv, respectively, which were comparable to values reported elsewhere.ConclusionThe ARIMA models developed in this study showed good short-term predictability, and can be used for dynamic analysis and prediction of radioactivity levels in environment and food around Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant.

Abstract Background Neuroinflammation is one of the most important pathogeneses in secondary brain injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) forming neutrophils were found throughout the brain tissue of TBI patients and elevated plasma NET biomarkers correlated with worse outcomes. However, the biological function and underlying mechanisms of NETs in TBI-induced neural damage are not yet fully understood. Here, we used Cl-amidine, a selective inhibitor of NETs to investigate the role of NETs in neural damage after TBI. Methods Controlled cortical impact model was performed to establish TBI. Cl-amidine, 2′3′-cGAMP (an activator of stimulating Interferon genes (STING)), C-176 (a selective STING inhibitor), and Kira6 [a selectively phosphorylated inositol-requiring enzyme-1 alpha [IRE1α] inhibitor] were administrated to explore the mechanism by which NETs promote neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis after TBI. Peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4), an essential enzyme for neutrophil extracellular trap formation, is overexpressed with adenoviruses in the cortex of mice 1 day before TBI. The short-term neurobehavior tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), Evans blue extravasation assay, Fluoro-Jade C (FJC), TUNEL, immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blotting, and quantitative-PCR were performed in this study. Results Neutrophils form NETs presenting in the circulation and brain at 3 days after TBI. NETs inhibitor Cl-amidine treatment improved short-term neurological functions, reduced cerebral lesion volume, reduced brain edema, and restored cerebral blood flow (CBF) after TBI. In addition, Cl-amidine exerted neuroprotective effects by attenuating BBB disruption, inhibiting immune cell infiltration, and alleviating neuronal death after TBI. Moreover, Cl-amidine treatment inhibited microglia/macrophage pro-inflammatory polarization and promoted anti-inflammatory polarization at 3 days after TBI. Mechanistically, STING ligand 2′3′-cGAMP abolished the neuroprotection of Cl-amidine via IRE1α/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway after TBI. Importantly, overexpression of PAD4 promotes neuroinflammation and neuronal death via the IRE1α/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway after TBI. However, STING inhibitor C-176 or IRE1α inhibitor Kira6 effectively abolished the neurodestructive effects of PAD4 overexpression after TBI. Conclusion Altogether, we are the first to demonstrate that NETs inhibition with Cl-amidine ameliorated neuroinflammation, neuronal apoptosis, and neurological deficits via STING-dependent IRE1α/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway after TBI. Thus, Cl-amidine treatment may provide a promising therapeutic approach for the early management of TBI. Graphical Abstract

Objective To examine the radioactivity of organically bound tritium (OBT) and carbon-14 (14C) in seafood from waters near nuclear power plant and to estimate annual committed effective dose of people exposed to the sea food in Zhejiang province for providing background data for assessing environmental and biological impacts of potential pollution due to the discharge of nuclear wastewater from foreign nuclear power plant. MethodsThe survey was conducted at two monitoring sites in Haiyan and Sanmen county close to two nuclear power plants and a control site in Dinghai district of Zhoushan city in Zhejiang province during April – October 2020. Fish, shrimp and seashell samples were collected to determine radioactivity of OBT and 14C in edible parts of the samples. The committed effective dose of people potentially exposed to the sea food was estimated based on the detection results and estimated consumption amount of the sea food. ResultsFor the samples collected at the sites in Haiyan county, Sanmen county, and the control district, the radioactivity (in Bq/per kilogram fresh edible sea food) of OBT ranged from < method detection limit (MDL) to 0.24, < MDL to 0.42, and < MDL to 0.34 and those of 14C ranged from 3.53 to 12.20, 11.55 to 20.34, and 8.35 to 19.59, respectively; the estimated annual radioactive dose (in Bq) for an individual due to the exposure to OBT in the sea food consumed were 4.79, 8.61, and 11.56 and those due to the exposure to 14C were 242.19, 397.55, and 529.63; the corresponding committed effective dose (in mSv/per year) for an individual exposed to both OBT and 14C in the sea food were 1.41 × 10 – 4, 2.31 × 10 – 4, and 3.08 × 10 – 4, accounting for 0.06%, 0.09%, and 0.12% of personal annual radioactive dose constraint value, respectively. ConclusionThe radioactive activity of OBT and 14C in three types of sea food from waters in areas near nuclear power plant were not significantly different from that in the sea food from waters in control area and at a background level in Zhejiang province in 2020. The annual radioactive exposure to OBT and 14C and the committed effective radioactive dose for individuals with consumption of the sea food were relatively low, so as the radioactive dose burden for local population.

Cyclodextrin–based porous materials have been widely applied in removing various organic pollutants from water environments, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, like the size–matching effect and hydrophobic interaction. Large numbers of hydroxyl groups in its external structure give cyclodextrin a high solubility in water, but the existence of these hydroxyl groups also endows cyclodextrin with the ability to be chemically modified with various functional groups to reduce its solubility in water and, meanwhile, to develop some novel functionalized cyclodextrin–based porous materials for selective removal of the target organic pollutants. This review focuses on the recent development in the synthesis of cyclodextrin–based porous materials (crosslinked cyclodextrin polymers and immobilized cyclodextrins), as well as highlighting their applications and mechanisms in the removal of dyes, endocrine disruptors, and mixed pollutants from water. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in related research fields are discussed.

Nuclear safety is a major concern given the rapid development of nuclear power in the modern era. Fostering a nuclear safety culture is an important means of ensuring nuclear safety. In China, a country with a rich historical and cultural heritage, traditional culture will influence the development of a nuclear safety culture. This study explored the origin and levels of nuclear safety culture and reflected on nuclear safety culture from the perspective of traditional Chinese culture. The purpose of this study is to integrate the essence of traditional culture into the nuclear safety culture and foster a nuclear safety culture with Chinese characteristics.

IntroductionTritium in the environment constitutes a radiological concern because it can become part of the hydrogen pool in environmental and biological reservoirs and thereby expose people to radiation.MethodsTissue-free water tritium (TFWT) analysis in food is an important subject of environmental radiation monitoring which plays an important role in the estimation of health risks from environmental tritium exposure. At present, tritium content in food is generally determined by liquid scintillation counter (LSC). To improve the analytical efficiency in tritium determination, we developed a novel method to treat TFWT in food using microporous membranes.ResultsThe microporous membrane treatment method developed in this study has the following characteristics: It has a wide range of application and can process TFWT samples with conductivity below 5 μS/cm. Sample loss for the microporous membrane treatment is approximately 5%. The average treatment time is only 5 min, significantly shortened compared with the currently used atmospheric distillation treatment method (1.5 h). The results of the comparison and spike experiment show that the samples prepared by microporous membrane treatment provides equally satisfactory tritium measurement results as classic distillation method.DiscussionThe developed microporous membrane method is simple to operate, efficient, and environmentally friendly, and effectively improves the analysis efficiency of TFWT in food.

Abstract To evaluate the impact of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (Qinshan NPP) in normal operation on the surrounding environment and population, the radioactivity levels of drinking water and the ambient environment, as well as the residents’ cancer incidence, were continuously monitored for a period of 9 years (2012–2020). All of the gross α and β radioactivity concentrations in drinking water were less than the WHO recommended values (0.5 Bq/L for gross α and 1 Bq/L for gross β). The results of ambient environment accumulated dose monitored by thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) indicated that the ambient environment radioactive level around the Qinshan NPP is consistently at natural background radiation levels. The age-dependent annual effective doses due to the ingestion of tap water or exposure to the outdoor ambient environment are lower than the reference dose of 0.1 mSv/year. The corresponding excess risks are at relatively low levels. Thus, the consumption of drinking water and outdoor activities are not expected to give rise to any detectable adverse effects on the health of the public around the Qinshan NPP. For all cancers combined, the age-standardized incidence rate by the Chinese 2000 standard population of the inhabitants living around Qinshan NPP is consistent with that of Zhejiang Province as a whole. Based on current radiation risk estimates, radiation exposure is not a plausible explanation for any excess cancers observed in the vicinity of the Qinshan NPP.

IntroductionIncreased neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation has been reported to be associated with cerebrovascular dysfunction and neurological deficits in traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the biological function and underlying mechanisms of NETs in TBI-induced neuronal cell death are not yet fully understood.MethodsFirst, brain tissue and peripheral blood samples of TBI patients were collected, and NETs infiltration in TBI patients was detected by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. Then, a controlled cortical impact device was used to model brain trauma in mice, and Anti-Ly6G, DNase, and CL-amidine were given to reduce the formation of neutrophilic or NETs in TBI mice to evaluate neuronal death and neurological function. Finally, the pathway changes of neuronal pyroptosis induced by NETs after TBI were investigated by administration of peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (a key enzyme of NET formation) adenovirus and inositol-requiring enzyme-1 alpha (IRE1α) inhibitors in TBI mice.ResultsWe detected that both peripheral circulating biomarkers of NETs and local NETs infiltration in the brain tissue were significantly increased and had positive correlations with worse intracranial pressure (ICP) and neurological dysfunction in TBI patients. Furthermore, the depletion of neutrophils effectively reduced the formation of NET in mice subjected to TBI. we found that degradation of NETs or inhibition of NET formation significantly inhibited nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor pyrin domain containing 1 (NLRP1) inflammasome-mediated neuronal pyroptosis after TBI, whereas these inhibitory effects were abolished by cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP), an activator of stimulating Interferon genes (STING). Moreover, overexpression of PAD4 in the cortex by adenoviruses could aggravate NLRP1-mediated neuronal pyroptosis and neurological deficits after TBI, whereas these pro-pyroptotic effects were rescued in mice also receiving STING antagonists. Finally, IRE1α activation was significantly upregulated after TBI, and NET formation or STING activation was found to promote this process. Notably, IRE1α inhibitor administration significantly abrogated NETs-induced NLRP1 inflammasome-mediated neuronal pyroptosis in TBI mice.DiscussionOur findings indicated that NETs could contribute to TBI-induced neurological deficits and neuronal death by promoting NLRP1-mediated neuronal pyroptosis. Suppression of the STING/ IRE1α signaling pathway can ameliorate NETs-induced neuronal pyroptotic death after TBI.

IntroductionSanmen nuclear power plant (SNPP) operates the first advanced passive (AP1000) nuclear power unit in China.MethodsTo assess the radiological impacts of SNPP operation on the surrounding environment and the public health, annual effective dose (AED) and excess risk (ER) were estimated based on continuous radioactivity monitoring in drinking water and ambient dose before and after its operation during 2014–2021. In addition, the residents' cancer incidence was further analyzed through authorized health data collection.ResultsThe results showed that the gross α and gross β radioactivity in all types of drinking water were ranged from 0.008 to 0.017 Bq/L and 0.032 to 0.112 Bq/L, respectively. The cumulative ambient dose in Sanmen county ranged from 0.254 to 0.460 mSv/y, with an average of 0.354 ± 0.075 mSv/y. There is no statistical difference in drinking water radioactivity and ambient dose before and after the operation of SNPP according to Mann–Whitney U test. The Mann-Kendall test also indicates there is neither increasing nor decreasing trend during the period from 2014 to 2021. The age-dependent annual effective doses due to the ingestion of drinking water or exposure to the outdoor ambient environment are lower than the recommended threshold of 0.1 mSv/y. The incidence of cancer (include leukemia and thyroid cancer) in the population around SNPP is slightly higher than that in other areas, while it is still in a stable state characterized by annual percentage changes.DiscussionThe current comprehensive results show that the operation of SNPP has so far no evident radiological impact on the surrounding environment and public health, but continued monitoring is still needed in the future.

ObjectivesRadioactivity monitoring around nuclear facilities is crucial to provide important baseline data for effective detection of radioactive leakage to the environment. We aim to establish a baseline study for monitoring radioactive levels of 90Sr and 137Cs around Sammen Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) and to assess their associated health impact on surrounding residents.MethodsIn this study, we collected water and food samples around the SNPP from 2011 to 2020 and determined for 90Sr and 137Cs activity concentrations. We statistically analyzed the temporal trends of 90Sr and 137Cs and evaluated their radiation exposure to the local residents.ResultsDuring this period, the activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs varied within 1.2–9.9 mBq/L and 0.10–7.6 mBq/L in water, and 0.037–1.3 Bq/kg and 0.011–0.45 Bq/kg in food, respectively, with no significant seasonal variation trend.ConclusionsAll reported activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs were significantly lower than the recommended value of WHO and Chinese national standards. There is no indication of notable radioactive release into the study area due to the operation of SNPP during 2018–2020. The annual effective doses (AEDs) from the ingestion of 90Sr and 137Cs in water and food were well below the international permissible limits, indicating the radiation exposure around SNPP during 2011–2020 was kept at a safe level.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of neurological disorder or death, with a heavy burden on individuals and families. While sustained primary insult leads to damage, subsequent secondary events are considered key pathophysiological characteristics post-TBI, and the inflammatory response is a prominent contributor to the secondary cascade. Neuroinflammation is a multifaceted physiological response and exerts both positive and negative effects on TBI. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), as messengers for intercellular communication, are involved in biological and pathological processes in central nervous system (CNS) diseases and injuries. The number and characteristics of EVs and their cargo in the CNS and peripheral circulation undergo tremendous changes in response to TBI, and these EVs regulate neuroinflammatory reactions by activating prominent receptors on receptor cells or delivering pro- or anti-inflammatory cargo to receptor cells. The purpose of this review is to discuss the possible neuroinflammatory mechanisms of EVs and loading in the context of TBI. Furthermore, we summarize the potential role of diverse types of cell-derived EVs in inflammation following TBI.

ObjectivesThe commonly used methods for the occupational health risk assessment (OHRA) of chemical toxicants cannot fully meet the needs of practical work. This study evaluated OHRA strategies for chemical toxicants in the workplace by establishing a quantitative analysis model.MethodsFive typical industries in China that implement OHRA using the six common models (the Environmental Protection Agency, Australian, Romanian, Singaporean, International Council on Mining and Metals, and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health models) were selected as the research objects. We established a quantitative analysis model to compare the six models and applied it to compare the results obtained using each model and preliminarily analyze the advantages, limitations, and application scope of each method.ResultsThe risk ratio (RR) values of the six methods decreased in the following order: RREPA > RRCOSHH > RRICMM > RRAustralia > RRSingaporean > RRRomanian (P < 0.05). Among the six models, the Singaporean model had the strongest RR correlation with the other models (P < 0.01). The sequence of RRs obtained from the Singaporean, ICMM, Australian, and Romanian models in the five industries was consistent with the sequence of the three inherent risk levels in those industries. Only the Romanian model could distinguish between the RRs of all five industries. The EPA and Singaporean models could effectively distinguish the differences in inherent risk for four hazard factors (manganese and inorganic compounds, benzene, xylene, and ethyl acetate), with the assessment accuracy being relatively higher for the EPA model.ConclusionsAmong the six models, the EPA model had the relatively highest accuracy in assessing chemical toxicants, followed by the Singaporean model. The EPA and Romanian models were strongest in differentiating the differences in toxicity risk. More studies on OHRA methodology are needed.

Background: Powder-coating processes have been extensively used in various industries. The submicron particles generated during the powder-coating process in the workplace have complex compositions and can cause serious diseases. The purpose of this study was to better understand the health risks and respiratory intake of submicron particles during the powder coating process.Methods: The concentrations of and variations in submicron particles were measured using real-time instruments. The health risks of submicron particles were analyzed using the Stoffenmanager Nano model. A new computational fluid dynamics model was used to assess the respiratory intake of ultrafine particles (UFPs), which was indicated by the deposited dosage of UFPs in the olfactory area, nasal cavity, and lungs. The deposited doses of UFPs were used to calculate the average daily doses (ADDs) of workers, according to the method described by the Environmental Protection Agency.Results: The number concentration (NC), mass concentration, surface area concentration, personal NC, and lung-deposited surface area concentration of submicron particles were >105 pt/cm3, 0.2–0.4 mg/m3, 600–1,200 μm2/cm3, 0.7–1.4 pt/cm3, and 100–700 μm2/cm3, respectively. The size distribution showed that the submicron particles mainly gathered between 30 and 200 nm. The health risk of submicron particles was high. Upon respiratory intake, most UFPs (111.5 mg) were inhaled into the lungs, a few UFPs (0.272 mg) were trapped in the nasal cavity, and a small minority of UFPs (0.292 mg) were deposited in the olfactory area. The ADD of male workers with 10 years of exposure in the olfactory area, nasal cavity, and lung were 1.192 × 10–3 mg/kg·d−1, 1.11 × 10–3 mg/kg·d−1, and 0.455 mg/kg·d−1, respectively.Conclusion: Owing to the high concentrations of submicron particles, the workers involved in the powder-coating process are at a high health risk. Moreover, the respiratory intake of UFPs by workers is high, which is suggested by the highly deposited dosage of UFPs in the lungs and the corresponding high ADD in workers. Control measures, including engineering control, management control, and personal protective equipment, must be improved for the protection of workers.

Ingestion of polonium-210 from environmental media and food can cause serious health hazards (e.g., gastrointestinal symptoms, tumours, etc.) and has been a public health concern worldwide since the 2006 poisoning of Agent Litvinenko 210Po in Russia. With the development of uranium mining and applications of nuclear technology in recent decades, the radioactive hazards posed by 210Po to living organisms and the environment have become increasingly prominent. In order to strengthen the monitoring of environmental 210Po and protect both the environment and human health, a series of explorations on the methods of 210Po determination have been ongoing by researchers across the globe. However, previous reviews have focused on individual sample types and have not provided a comprehensive account of environmental, food, and biological samples that are closely related to human health. In this work, the sources, health hazards, chemical purification, and detection methods of trace 210Po in different sample types are systematically reviewed. In particular, the advantages and disadvantages of various pretreatment methods are compared, and relevant domestic and international standards are integrated, which puts forward a new direction for the subsequent establishment of rapid, simple, and efficient measurement methods.

Abstract Environmental radioactivity monitoring in the surroundings of nuclear facilities is important to provide baseline data for effective detection in case of any radioactive release in the region. In this work, we report for the first time the long-term monitoring data of 137Cs and 90Sr in environmental and food samples around Qinshan nuclear power plant in 2012–2019. The distribution levels, temporal variations and source terms of 137Cs and 90Sr in the investigated samples were discussed. The annual effective dose (AED) for the local population from the ingestion of foods was also evaluated. Peak values of 90Sr and 137Cs concentrations and 137Cs/90Sr activity ratio were observed in total atmospheric deposition in 2016 and some water and food samples in the following years. This seems to be associated to an additional radioactive input, mostly likely from the operational release of a local facility. This demonstrates that 90Sr and 137Cs, especially the 137Cs/90Sr activity ratio, are sensitive indicators for detecting potential radioactive releases. Nevertheless, overall 90Sr and 137Cs activity concentrations measured during 2012–2019 in this work were at the background levels with average AED far below the internationally permissible limit and recommendation.

Abstract Ultrafine particles have been increasingly linked to adverse health effects in restaurant workers. This study aimed to clarify the exposure characteristics and risks of ultrafine particles during the cooking process, and to provide a reasonable standard for protecting the workers in the Chinese restaurant. The temporal variations in particle concentrations (number concentration (NC), mass concentration (MC), surface area concentration (SAC), and personal NC), and size distributions by number were measured by real-time system. The hazard, exposure, and risk levels of ultrafine particles were analyzed using the control banding tools. The NC, MC, and SAC increased during the cooking period and decreased gradually to background levels post-operation. The concentration ratios of MC, total NC, SAC, and personal NC ranged from 3.82 to 9.35. The ultrafine particles were mainly gathered at 10.4 and 100 nm during cooking. The exposure, hazard and risk levels of the ultrafine particles were high. These findings indicated that the workers during cooking were at high risk due to exposure to high levels of ultrafine particles associated with working activity and with a bimodal size distribution. The existing control strategies, including engineering control, management control, and personal protection equipment need to be improved to reduce the risk.

BackgroundThe hazards of kitchen particles have attracted social attention, but their distribution characteristics and risk assessment are rarely reported.ObjectiveTo explore the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of kitchen particles, analyze the variations in characteristics of number concentration (NC), mass concentration (MC), surface area concentration (SAC), and particle size distribution, provide reference indexes for evaluating worker exposure, evaluate the risk of kitchen particles, as well as suggest improvements and control measures.Patients and methodsDifferent cooking posts in a Chinese hotel kitchen were selected to monitor exposure to particles, explore the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of NC, MC, and SAC of particles in the cooking post, analyze changes in the particle size, compare the individual exposure of particles between the cooking and steaming posts, and analyze the correlation between NC, MC, and SAC. Risk assessment of kitchen ultrafine particles was performed using a Nanotool.ResultsThe sizes and fluctuation ranges of NC10 − 500nm at cooking posts during lunch preparation and at peak periods were significantly higher than those at the end of the lunch period. The mean values of MC10 − 500nm during the lunch preparation peak and ending periods were 0.149, 0.229, and 0.151 mg m−3, respectively. The mean values of SAC10 − 500nm were 225, 961, and 466 μm2·cm−3, respectively. The mode diameter of exposed particles at the cooking post [(34.98 ± 2.33) nm] was higher than that at the steaming post [(30.11 ± 2.17) nm] (P < 0.01). The correlation between SAC10 − 500nm and NC10 − 500nm (r = 0.703) was the strongest. Nanotool gave a hazard rating ratio, exposure rating ratio, and risk ratio of 0.75.ConclusionThe sizes of the NC, MC, and SAC of the particles at the cooking post were related to the kitchen operations. Since kitchen particles are of high exposure and risk levels, protective measures should be formulated and implemented to deal with them safely.

Abstract Temozolomide (TMZ)-resistance hampers the therapeutic efficacy of this drug for glioblastoma (GBM) treatment in clinic, and emerging evidences suggested that exosomes from GBM-derived stem cells (GSCs) contributed to this process, but the detailed mechanisms are still largely unknown. In the present study, we reported that GSCs derived programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) containing exosomes activated AMPK/ULK1 pathway mediated protective autophagy enhanced TMZ-resistance in GBM in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, we noticed that continuous low-dose TMZ stimulation promoted GSCs generation and PD-L1 containing exosomes (PD-L1-ex) secretion in GBM cells, and that PD-L1-ex inhibited cell apoptosis and promoted cell autophagy to increased TMZ-resistance in GBM cells, which were reversed by co-treating cells with the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA). Consistently, upregulation of PD-L1 also increased TMZ-resistance in TS-GBM cells, and silencing of PD-L1 sensitized TR-GBM cells to TMZ. In addition, PD-L1-ex activated AMPK/ULK1 pathway to induce autophagy in TMZ treated GBM cells, and the inhibitors for AMPK (compound C) and ULK1 (SBI-0206965) promoted cell apoptosis in GBM cells co-treated with PD-L1-ex and high-dose TMZ. Finally, we evidenced that PD-L1-ex promoted tumor growth and Ki67 protein expressions to increase TMZ-resistance in GBM in vivo. Collectively, we concluded that GSCs-derived PD-L1-ex activated AMPK1/ULK1 signaling cascade mediated autophagy to increase TMZ-resistance in GBM, and this study provided potential strategies to improve the therapeutic efficacy of TMZ in GBM.

In the context of the rapid development of the world’s nuclear power industry, it is vital to establish reliable and efficient radioanalytical methods to support sound environment and food radioactivity monitoring programs and a cost-effective waste management strategy. As one of the most import fission products generated during human nuclear activities, 90Sr has been widely determined based on different analytical techniques for routine radioactivity monitoring, emergency preparedness and radioactive waste management. Herein, we summarize and critically review analytical methods developed over the last few decades for the determination of 90Sr in environmental and biological samples. Approaches applied in different steps of the analysis including sample preparation, chemical separation and detection are systematically discussed. The recent development of modern materials for 90Sr concentration and advanced instruments for rapid 90Sr measurement are also addressed.
