1. Water quality and pollution source apportionment responses to rainfall in steppe lake estuaries: A case study of Hulun Lake in northern China

Abstract

Hulun Lake, the largest inland steppe lake in China, is encountering severe water quality degradation. Estuaries play important roles in material and energetic exchange between rivers and lakes. The water quality at the estuaries of Hulun Lake directly reflects the impact of both human activities and natural factors on the lake’s overall water quality, especially during rainfall events. From July 28, 2021, to August 4, 2021, water samples from 62 sites were collected in the three estuaries of Hulun Lake before and after a moderate rainfall event. 13 water parameters, including dissolved oxygen (DO), Turbidity (Tur), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Organic Nitrogen (TON), and Total Organic Phosphorus (TOP) were measured. The spatio-temporal distribution of water quality in the estuaries was assessed based on water quality index (WQI). Besides, an improved approach integrating stepwise linear regression (SLR) and principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to construct a WQImin model for an effective assessment of water quality in these estuaries. Furthermore, the absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model was employed to identify and quantify the environmental drivers underlying the water quality in the estuaries. The results of WQI indicated that the water quality of the sites in the estuaries of Hulun Lake was “medium” or “poor”, both before and after the rainfall, with a general deterioration in water quality in response to the rainfall. The simplified WQImin model consisted of 5 crucial parameters (i.e., TN, TP, ammonium (NH4+-N), Tur, and permanganate index (CODMn)), and it performed well without parameter weights. Spatial differences in some water parameters among the estuaries were detected, which were attributed to the natural factors and human activities upstream. The principal environmental factors affecting the water quality in the estuaries consisted of hydrodynamic processes, internal phosphorus release, external phosphorus input, external nitrogen input, nitrification in the estuaries, and external organic input and internal organic release. Therefore, we propose basin management strategies such as limiting grazing pressure, adopting enclosed pasture, wetland restoration, optimizing water renewal cycle in Hulun Lake, and transboundary water quality management to tackle water contamination in Hulun Lake.

2. A Data-Driven Method for Calculating Neutron Flux Distribution Based on Deep Learning and the Discrete Ordinates Method

Abstract

The efficient and accurate calculation of neutron flux distribution is essential for evaluating the safety of nuclear facilities and the surrounding environment. While traditional numerical simulation methods such as the discrete ordinates (SN) method and Monte Carlo method have demonstrated excellent performance in terms of accuracy, their complex solving process incurs significant computational costs. This paper explores a data-driven and efficient method for obtaining neutron flux distribution based on deep learning, specifically targeting shielding problems with constant geometry and varying material cross-sections in practical engineering. The proposed method bypasses the intricate numerical transport calculation process of the discrete ordinates method by constructing a surrogate model that captures the correlation between transport characteristics and neutron flux from data characteristics. Simulations were carried out using Kobayashi-1 and Kobayashi-2 geometric models for shielding problems with constant geometry and varying material cross-sections. A series of validations have proved that the data-driven surrogate model demonstrates high generalization ability and reliability, while reducing the time required to obtain neutron flux distribution to 0.1 s without compromising on calculation accuracy compared to the discrete ordinates method.

3. MGGC2.0: A preprocessing code for the multi-group cross section of the fast reactor with ultrafine group library

Abstract

How to generate the precise broad group cross section is important for the fast reactor design. In this study, a fast reactor multi-group cross-section generation code MGGC2.0 are developed in-house for processing ultrafine group MATXS format library. Validation and verification are performed for MGGC2.0 code by applying the benchmarks of ICSBEP handbook, and the results of MGGC2.0 agree well with that of MCNP. The consistent PN method with critical buckling search is in good agreement that condensed with TWODANT flux and flux moment for the inner core and outer core region. For the radial blanket and reflector, two region approximation method has been applied in MGGC2.0 by using collision Probability Method neutron flux solver. The RBEC-M benchmark was used to verify the power distribution calculation, and the relative error of power distribution comparison with the reference are less than 0.8% in the fuel region and the maximum relative error is 5.58% in the reflector region. Therefore, the precise broad cross section can be generated by MGGC2.0 for fast reactor.

4. Preliminary Study on the Thermal Neutron Scattering Cross-Section for HinH2O in Small Modular Reactors

Abstract

Neutron thermalization leads to the complexity of the scattering cross-section calculation, which influences the accuracy of the neutron transport calculation in the thermal energy range. The higher precision of thermal scattering data is demanded in the small modular reactors (SMRs) design, especially for small-sized PWRs and SCWRs. Additionally, the thermal neutron scattering problems in supercritical water have not yet been solved. In this study, the thermal neutron scattering problems in subcritical water are tested. Based on thermal neutron scattering theory, the GA model and IKE model were analyzed. This work selected the corresponding input parameters, such as the frequency spectrum, the discrete oscillator energy, weight parameters and so on, as well as preliminary studies on how to calculate the thermal scattering data for HinH2O to accomplish the calculation at various temperatures by developing LIPER code. The deviation between the calculated and reference results, which were both obtained by the Monte Carlo code, COSRMC, was below 0.2 pcm. The deviation of the scattering cross-section between the calculation results and reference was below 0.1%, indicating the reasonability of this study’s thermal scattering data calculation.

5. Stimulating effects of whooper swans’ behaviors on nutrient releasing from the sediments caused by different human feeding intensities in the swan Lake, China

Abstract

In many shallow water lakes of China, as the numbers of tourists observing waterflow increases, the amount of supplemental food provided to waterflow also increases. However, little attention has been paid to the role of waterfowl’s behavior perturbation in N and P nutrients releasing from the sediment. In this study, five feeding experiments were undertaken in the Swan Lake (Shandong Province, northern China) during the wintering season and a noticeable release of nutrients in all experiments was found by the disturbance of the swan behaviors. The release of TN and TP was through three stages including the non-release stage, the rapid release stage, and the stable release stage. Moreover, supplemental food also influenced the swan behavior changes and triggered the frequency of the swans’ grazing and aggression. The aggressive behaviors among the swans stirred nutrient (N & P) releasing from sediments and altered TN and TP concentrations in the water columns, indicating that the aggressive behaviors may be a significant factor in affecting the TN and TP releasing from the sediment. Human feeding intensity (HFI) suggested > 850 g of supplemental corn can be an optimal way to aid in avoiding foraging competition among the swans to control nutrient release by three levels of human feeding intensity assessment. Our findings demonstrate that under the swans’ optimal foraging need in natural versus artificial feeding scenarios, the swans acted as biological pumps to increase nutrient release. There is a need for a systematic and evidence-based feeding strategy for swans, with greater restrictions on the provision of small food items scattered by visitors. Our study provided novel insights into the release mechanism of N and P from bioturbation and could help to inform a whooper swan conservation strategy in coastal wetlands and nature reserves.

6. An hp-angular adaptivity with the discrete ordinates method for Boltzmann transport equation

Abstract

This paper describes an hp-angular adaptivity algorithm in the discrete ordinates method for Boltzmann transport applications with strong angular effects. This adaptivity uses discontinuous finite element quadrature sets with different degrees, which updates both angular mesh and the degree of the underlying discontinuous finite element basis functions, allowing different angular local refinement to be applied in space. The regular and goal-based error metrics are considered in this algorithm to locate some regions to be refined. A mapping algorithm derived by moment conservation is developed to pass the angular solution between spatial regions with different quadrature sets. The proposed method is applied to some test problems that demonstrate the ability of this hp-angular adaptivity to resolve complex fluxes with relatively few angular unknowns. Results illustrate that a reduction to approximately 1/50 in quadrature ordinates for a given accuracy compared with uniform angular discretization. This method therefore offers a highly efficient angular adaptivity for investigating difficult particle transport problems.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

The Daihai Lake, the third largest lake in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is the cornerstone to maintain the ecosystem balance in this region, which is facing some problems including size shrinking, water quality declining and biodiversity decreasing largely in recent years. In order to quantify the N purification amount of submerged plants, Stella software was used in this study to construct a nitrogen dynamic model to simulate the nitrogen cycle process in the Daihai Lake and the participation of submerged plants in this cycle process. The results showed that based on the submerged plant growth area in 2019 in the Daihai Lake, the N uptake by submerged plants this year was 5.13t, accounting for 4.8% of all exogenous pollution (107.895t), Moreover, our model also predicted that the purification capacity of the restored submerged plants with a large area of 9.91 km2 in the Daihai Lake was significantly higher than before restoration. And the N pollution load of 107.892t in the Daihai Lake could be purified by this stored pattern in 12 years, while during this process a regular cleaning of submerged plant residues was required. Therefore, only large area restoration of submerged plant would benefit for improving water quality.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

14. Development and verification of a new nuclear data processing code AXSP

Abstract

The advanced reactor design needs an accurate cross-section generation code. In this study, a new nuclear data processing code AXSP is developed, and the method and performance of which are described. Compared with the NJOY program, the precision of the unresolved resonance processing module UnresXS has been significantly improved due to the adoption of a more accurate solution method and the consideration of in-sequence overlap integrals. The time consumption of PUnresXS has been decreased significantly due to an optimized sorting algorithm. At the same time, other modules of AXSP are relatively comprehensive. The function of resolved resonance cross-section reconstruction and linearization is the ReconXS module. The Doppler broadening module is BroadXS by using Gauss–Hermite quadrature and Gauss–Legendre quadrature from 0 K temperature pointwise cross section to any temperature which is defined by the user. The shielding factor in the unresolved resonance energy region is calculated by the UnresXS or the PUnresXS module, which are developed based on the Bondarenko method and the probability table method, respectively. The ACE formatted cross sections for the Monte Carlo code is processed by the ACEXS module, and the multigroup cross sections are generated by the GroupXS module. The cross sections processed by different modules were verified by the NJOY2016 code, and the multigroup cross sections were also verified by using the critical benchmarks. The multiplication factor difference between AXSP and NJOY2016 is less than 20 pcm. In addition to this, the ZPR6/7 fast reactor is used for ACE format library verification. The results show that the criticality calculated by AXSP has a good agreement with that of NJOY2016.

Abstract

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

16. Analysis of the Influence of Energy Group Structure on Iron Shielding Calculation

Abstract

The energy group structure of a multi-group cross section library matched with a deterministic method has a significant influence on shielding calculation. The complex resonance cross section of Fe-56 has a significant influence on accuracy with different energy group structures when processing multi-group cross section data. In this study, in order to more accurately test the influence of the iron resonance phenomenon on shielding calculations, this group structure is modified by the 199-group with 69 points interpolated into its group boundaries at an energy range from 1.1 keV to 3.1164 MeV. The new 269-group library is then tested with selected SINBAD iron sphere benchmarks and compared with the results of 199-group, 299-group, and 172-group libraries and measurements. Upon analysis, it is shown that the resonance of Fe-56 has a great influence on the accuracy of the calculated leakage. Further, it is noted that the finer the energy group division, the greater the calculated leakage fluctuation, and the deeper the neutron passes through the iron sphere, the larger the calculated leakage fluctuation. Abstract

The spatial distribution of neutron flux or reaction rate was calculated by cell or mesh tally in traditional Monte Carlo simulation. However, either cell or mesh tally leads to the increase of memory consumption and simulation time. In this paper, the function expansion tally (FET) method was developed in Reactor Monte Carlo code RMC to solve this problem. The FET method was applied to the tallies of neutron flux distributions of uranium block and PWR fuel rod models. Legendre polynomials were used in the axial direction, while Zernike polynomials were used in the radial direction. The results of flux, calculation time and memory consumption of different expansion orders were investigated, and compared with the mesh tally. Results showed that the continuous distribution of flux can be obtained by FET method. The flux distributions were consistent with that of mesh tally, while the memory consumption and simulation time can be effectively reduced. Finally, the convergence analysis of coefficients of polynomials were performed, and the selection strategy of FET order was proposed based on the statistics uncertainty of the coefficients. The proposed method can help to determine the order of FET, which was meaningful for the efficiency and accuracy of FET method.

Abstract

The discrete ordinates method (SN) is one of the major shielding calculation method, which is suitable for solving deep-penetration transport problems. Our objective is to explore the available quadrature sets and to improve the accuracy in shielding problems involving strong anisotropy. The linear discontinuous finite-element (LDFE) quadrature sets based on the icosahedron (in short, ICLDFE quadrature sets) are developed by defining projected points on the surfaces of the icosahedron. Weights are then introduced in the integration of the discontinuous finite-element basis functions in the relevant angular regions. The multivariate secant method is used to optimize the discrete directions and their corresponding weights. The numerical integration of polynomials in the direction cosines and the Kobayashi benchmark are used to analyze and verify the properties of these new quadrature sets. Results show that the ICLDFE quadrature sets can exactly integrate the zero-order and first-order of the spherical harmonic functions over one-twentieth of the spherical surface. As for the Kobayashi benchmark problem, the maximum relative error between the fifth-order ICLDFE quadrature sets and references is only −0.55%. The ICLDFE quadrature sets provide better integration precision of the spherical harmonic functions in local discrete angle domains and higher accuracy for simple shielding problems.

19. Nuclear Data Sensitivity and Uncertainty Study for the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Benchmark Using RMC and SCALE

Abstract

In order to improve the safety and economy of nuclear reactors, it is necessary to analyze the sensitivity and uncertainty (S/U) of the nuclear data. The capabilities of S/U analysis has been developed in the Reactor Monte Carlo code RMC, using the iterated fission probability (IFP) method and the superhistory method. In this paper, the S/U capabilities of RMC are applied to a typical PWR benchmark B&W’s Core XI, and compared with the multigroup and continuous-energy S/U capabilities in the SCALE code system. The S/U results of the RMC-IFP method and the RMC-superhistory method are compared with TSUNAMI-CE/MG in SCALE. The sensitivity results and the uncertainty results of major nuclides that contribute a lot to the uncertainties in keff are in good agreement in both RMC and SCALE. The RMC-superhistory method has the same precision as the IFP method, but it reduces the memory footprint by more than 95% and only doubles the running time. The superhistory method has obvious advantages when there are many nuclides and reaction types to be analyzed. In addition, the total uncertainties in the keff of the first-order uncertainty quantification method are compared with the stochastic sampling method, and the maximum relative deviation of total uncertainties in the keff is 8.53%. Verification shows that the capabilities of S/U analysis developed in the RMC code has good accuracy.

Abstract

The shielding calculation of neutron streaming problems with ducts is characterized by the strong anisotropy of angular flux, which poses a challenge for the analysis of nuclear installations. The discrete ordinate method is one of the most commonly deterministic techniques to solve the neutron transport equation, in which the accuracy and efficiency neutron are crucial to ensure the reliability of the streaming shielding simulation. We implemented the goal-oriented multi-collision source algorithm in the 3D transport code ARES. This algorithm can determine the importance factor based on the adjoint transport calculation, obtain the response function to enable problem-dependent, goal-oriented spatial decomposition, and provide the error estimation as a driving force behind the dynamic quadrature to optimize the source iteration. This study focuses on verifying the goal-oriented multi-collision source algorithm under the neutron streaming problems, and the capabilities of the algorithm have been tested on IRI-TUB benchmark of SINBAD database. The numerical results show that the algorithm can effectively control the angular discretization error for the neutron streaming problems, which is more economical than the traditional discrete ordinate calculation.

The recently released CENDL-3.2 nuclear data library is deemed as an important achievement in the field of nuclear data research in China. To verify the applicability of the library to the shielding calculation of PWR and analyze the influence of multigroup cross-section parameters on the shielding calculation, ARES-MACXS module is used to process the MATXS format multigroup library based on CENDL-3.2 to generate multigroup working cross sections for PWR shielding calculation. VENUS-3 experimental facility has a clear and complete geometry. It is often used to test the ability of the advanced transport calculation method of calculating RPV fast neutron flux and to evaluate the accuracy of cross-section library. Different cross-section parameters are chosen for ARES to calculate VENUS-3 benchmark, and equivalent neutron flux of 58Ni(n,p)58Co, 115In(n,n′)115mIn and 27Al(n,α)24Na detectors is calculated according to the data provided by the benchmark report. The numerical results demonstrate that almost all the relative deviations between the calculated results and the experimental results are within 20%, which satisfies the requirement of shielding calculation. CENDL-3.2 is suitable for PWR shielding calculation. The comparison of various cross-section parameters results indicates that multigroup cross-section parameters have large effects on the transport calculation results.

22. Analysis of Spatial Discretization Error Estimators Implemented in ARES Transport Code for SN Equations

Abstract

The discrete ordinates method (SN) is one of the mainstream methods for neutral particle transport calculations. Assessing the quality of the numerical solution and controlling the discrete error are essential parts of large-scale high-fidelity simulations of nuclear systems. Three error estimators, a two-mesh estimator, a residual-based estimator, and a dual-weighted residual estimator, are derived and implemented in the ARES transport code to evaluate the error of zeroth-order spatial discretization for SN equations. The difference in scalar fluxes on coarse and fine meshes is adopted to indicate the error in the two-mesh method. To avoid zero residual in zeroth-order discretization, angular fluxes within one cell are reconstructed by Legendre polynomials. The error is estimated by inverting the discrete transport operator using the estimated directional residual as an anisotropic source. The inner product of the forward directional residual and the adjoint angular flux is employed to quantify the error in quantities of interest which can be denoted by a linear functional of forward angular flux. Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) is adopted to generate analytical solutions for SN equation with scattering and the determined true error is used to evaluate the effectivity of these estimators. Promising results are obtained in the numerical results for both homogeneous and heterogeneous cases. The larger error region is well captured and the average effectivity index for the local error estimation is less than unity. For the series test problems, the estimated goal quantity error can be contained within an order of magnitude around the exact error.

ARES is a multidimensional parallel discrete ordinates particle transport code with arbitrary order anisotropic scattering. It can be applied to a wide variety of radiation shielding calculations and reactor physics analysis. To validate the applicability of the code to accelerator shielding problems, ARES is adopted to simulate a series of accelerator shielding experiments for 43 MeV proton-7Li quasi-monoenergetic neutrons, which is performed at Takasaki Ion Accelerator for Advanced Radiation Application. These experiments on iron and concrete were analyzed using the ARES code with FENDL/MG-3.0 multigroup libraries and compared to direct measurements from the BC501A detector. The simulations show good agreement with the experimental data. The ratios of calculated values to experimental data for integrated neutron flux at peak and continuum energy regions are within 64% and 25% discrepancy for the concrete and iron experiments, respectively. The results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of ARES code for accelerator shielding calculation.

ARES is a multidimensional parallel discrete ordinates particle transport code with arbitrary order anisotropic scattering. ARES uses state-of-the-art solution methods to obtain accurate solutions to the linear Boltzmann transport equation. A multigroup discretization is applied in energy. The code allows multiple spatial discretization schemes and solution methodologies. ARES currently provides diamond difference with or without linear-zero flux fixup, theta weighted, directional theta weighted, exponential directional weighted, and linear discontinuous finite element spatial differencing schemes. Discrete ordinates differencing in angle and spherical harmonics expansion of the scattering source are adopted. First collision source method is used to eliminate or mitigate the ray effects. Traditional source iteration and Krylov iterative method preconditioned with diffusion synthetic acceleration are applied to solve the linear system of equations. ARES uses the Koch-Baker-Alcouffe parallel sweep algorithm to obtain high parallel efficiency. Verification and validation for the ARES transport code system have been done by lots of benchmarks. In this paper, ARES solutions to the HBR-2 benchmark and C5G7 benchmarks are in excellent agreement with published results. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of these methods.

Abstract

Activated corrosion products (ACPs) are the dominant radiation hazard in water-cooled fusion reactor under normal operation conditions and directly determine the occupational radiation exposure during operation and maintenance. Recently, the preliminary design of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) has been just completed. Evaluation of ACPs is an important work for the safety of CFETR. In this paper, the ACPs analysis code CATE 2.1 was used to simulate the spatial distribution of ACPs along the blanket cooling loop of CFETR, in which the influence of adopting different pulse handling methods was researched. At last, the dose rate caused by ACPs around the blanket cooling loop was calculated using the point kernel code ARShield. The results showed that the dose rate under normal operation for 1.2 years at contact is 1.02 mSv/h and at 1 m away from pipe is 0.45 mSv/h. And after shutting down the reactor, there will be a rapid decrease of dose rate, because of the rapid decay of short-lived ACPs.

Abstract

In water-cooled reactor, the dominant radioactive source term under normal operation is activated corrosion products (ACPs), which have an important impact on reactor inspection and maintenance. A three-node transport model of ACPs was introduced into the new version of ACPs source term code CATE in this paper, which makes CATE capable of theoretically simulating the variation and the distribution of ACPs in a water-cooled reactor and suitable for more operating conditions. For code testing, MIT PWR coolant chemistry loop was simulated, and the calculation results from CATE are close to the experimental results from MIT, which means CATE is available and credible on ACPs analysis of water-cooled reactor. Then ACPs in the blanket cooling loop of water-cooled fusion reactor ITER under construction were analyzed using CATE and the results showed that the major contributors are the short-life nuclides, especially Mn-56. At last a point kernel integration code ARShield was coupled with CATE, and the dose rate around ITER blanket cooling loop was calculated. Results showed that after shutting down the reactor only for 8 days, the dose rate decreased nearly one order of magnitude, which was caused by the rapid decay of the short-life ACPs.

Atmospheric dispersion modeling and radiation dose calculations have been performed for a hypothetical AP1000 SGTR accident by HotSpot code 3.03. TEDE, the respiratory time-integrated air concentration, and the ground deposition are calculated for various atmospheric stability classes, Pasquill stability categories A–F with site-specific averaged meteorological conditions. The results indicate that the maximum plume centerline ground deposition value of 1.2E+2 kBq/m2 occurred at about 1.4 km and the maximum TEDE value of 1.41E-05 Sv occurred at 1.4 km from the reactor. It is still far below the annual regulatory limits of 1 mSv for the public as set in IAEA Safety Report Series number 115. The released radionuclides might be transported to long distances but will not have any harmful effect on the public.

Maintaining the structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is a critical concern related to the safe operation of nuclear power plants. To estimate the structural integrity over the designed lifetime and to support analyses for a potential plant life extension, an accurate calculation of the fast neutron fluence (E>1.0 MeV or E>0.1 MeV) at the RPV is significant. The discrete ordinates method is one of the main methods to solve such problems. During the calculation process, many factors will affect the results. In this paper, the deviations introduced by different differencing schemes and mesh sizes on the AP1000 RPV fast neutron fluence have been studied, which are based on new discrete ordinates code ARES. The analysis shows that the differencing scheme (diamond difference with or without linear zero fix-up, theta weighted, directional theta weighted, and exponential directional weighted) introduces a deviation within 4%. The coarse mesh (4 × 4 cm meshes in XY plane) leads to approximately 23.7% calculation deviation compared to those of refined mesh (1 × 1 cm meshes in XY plane). Comprehensive study on the deviation introduced by differencing scheme and mesh size has great significance for reasoned evaluation of RPV fast neutron fluence calculation results.

With the rapid development of nuclear power industry, simulating and analyzing the reactor transient are of great significance for the nuclear safety. The traditional diffusion theory is not suitable for small volume or strong absorption problem. In this paper, we have studied the application of discrete ordinates method in the numerical solution of space-time kinetics equation. The fully implicit time integration was applied and the precursor equations were solved by analytical method. In order to improve efficiency of the transport theory, we also adopted some advanced acceleration methods. Numerical results of the TWIGL benchmark problem presented demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this methodology.

37. Development and Verification of Multigroup Cross Section Generation Module GroupXS in AXSP

Abstract

It is important for nuclear reactor physics calculation to generate accurate multigroup cross section libraries by using evaluation nuclear data libraries. A new evaluated nuclear data library processing code, named as AXSP (Advanced Cross Section Processing Code) was developed with independent intellectual property rights. The GroupXS module was developed with the ability of generating multi-group cross-sections based on the Bondarenko method which is always a favorable approximation for the fast spectrum reactor, and the method was also used in GROUPR of NJOY. To verify the accuracy of the GroupXS module, the GROUPR module of NJOY was used, and we corrected three numerical verification bugs of GROUPR. The bugs were described in this study. By comparing the calculation results with GROUPR of NJOY2016, the relative error of multigroup flux, multigroup cross sections of various reaction types are less than 0.01%, and the relative errors of transfer matrices of various reaction types are basically less than 0.1%. All the neutron reaction types of all nuclides in ENDF/B-VII.1, ENDF/B-VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2 can be processed by GroupXS, and the multigroup cross sections generated by GroupXS of AXSP have a good agreement with that generated by GROUPR of NJOY2016.

38. Optimization for Rapid Dose Calculation of the RIMPUFF Model and Its Evaluation Against Belgian Field Experiment

Abstract

The Risø Mesoscale PUFF model (RIMPUFF) is a Lagrangian atmospheric dispersion model that uses consecutive Gaussian puffs to simulate accidental release which is widely used in nuclear emergencies. Based on the real-time puff size and the distance between the puff and the monitoring station, RIMPUFF can calculate the dose results quickly by using the dose calculation interpolation table within its dose calculation module but the results are biased. To improve the accuracy of dose results under the requirement of rapid dose calculation, in this paper, a new interpolation table for dose calculation is proposed utilizing a 3D integral dose calculation method. And the proposed interpolation table was evaluated against the Belgian field experiment. In order to assess the quality of the optimization, the dose results of the new interpolation were compared with that of RIMPUFF, the 3D convolution method and observations from the field experiment. The comparisons indicate that the dose results of the new dose interpolation table are closer to the observed values and have better statistical metrics (0.39 for FB, 0.56 for NMSE, 0.72 for FAC2) than that of RIMPUFF (0.53 for FB, 0.76 for NMSE, 0.65 for FAC2).

Abstract

Land use/land cover (LULC) changes and high urbanization rates are the main drivers of avian habitat loss in developing countries. However, few studies have examined the effects of urbanization intensity on avian diversity distribution and its importance in guiding eco-friendly urban planning. We surveyed bird distribution (n = 67 species) in different seasons using local ecological knowledge (LEK) and transect line methods in Jiangyan District from July 2018 to May 2019. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effects of urbanization levels on birds relative density and richness during spring-summer (breeding season) and autumn-winter seasons (non-breeding season). Generalized linear models (GLM) were identified for the landscape composition and configuration that drive relative density and richness in native bird communities. Using redundancy analysis (RDA), we identified the landscape composition and configuration factors affecting bird foraging and roosting at urbanization levels. The results showed high dependency of waders and granivores on paddy fields and dry arable land respectively during the breeding season. During non-breeding season, wetland abundance, land cover, connectivity and total area of BGI were important habitat factors in attracting birds. Moreover, the landscape composition and configuration factors of BGI: wetlands as well as farmland habitats, are the main environmental cues that influence bird foraging. Therefore, to increase habitat suitability over landscape matrix, we propose creation of multiple waterbodies and green corridors of variable types and sizes on natural patches to improve the connectivity of ecological network. We also recommend land management interventions in farmland ecosystems, which could contribute to natural habitat restoration and improve bird biodiversity in urban areas.

Abstract

The discrete ordinates method (SN) is one of the major shielding calculation method, which is suitable for solving deep-penetration transport problems. Our objective is to explore the available quadrature sets and to improve the accuracy in shielding problems involving strong anisotropy. The linear discontinuous finite-element (LDFE) quadrature sets based on the icosahedron (in short, ICLDFE quadrature sets) are developed by defining projected points on the surfaces of the icosahedron. Weights are then introduced in the integration of the discontinuous finite-element basis functions in the relevant angular regions. The multivariate secant method is used to optimize the discrete directions and their corresponding weights. The numerical integration of polynomials in the direction cosines and the Kobayashi benchmark are used to analyze and verify the properties of these new quadrature sets. Results show that the ICLDFE quadrature sets can exactly integrate the zero-order and first-order of the spherical harmonic functions over one-twentieth of the spherical surface. As for the Kobayashi benchmark problem, the maximum relative error between the fifth-order ICLDFE quadrature sets and references is only −0.55%. The ICLDFE quadrature sets provide better integration precision of the spherical harmonic functions in local discrete angle domains and higher accuracy for simple shielding problems.
