Flashing-induced instability (FII) has a significant impact on the safe operation of a natural circulation circuit, a phenomenon frequently encountered in the cooling systems of advanced light water reactors. While one-dimensional system codes are commonly used for the engineering design and safety analysis of FII, there is a strong academic interest in understanding the underlying physical mechanisms. To address this, high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations serve as a valuable tool. However, the current state of CFD modeling for two-phase flows with phase change, which are particularly highly transient fluctuating flashing flows, is still in its early stages of development. In this study, we establish a CFD model that focuses on interphase heat transfer to analyze the phase change during FII. By incorporating experimental data from the literature, we investigate the transient flow field and thermodynamic behavior in the riser of the GENEVA test facility. The study provides valuable insights into the non-equilibrium and interfacial transfer phenomena during the phase change as well as the effect of high-frequency fluctuation. Additionally, we discuss in detail the challenges associated with FII modeling and the limitations of the current model. We also provide suggestions for potential improvements in future numerical studies. The results show that the thermal phase change and heat transfer coefficient model adopted for the simulation reasonably captures the evaporation and condensation process. However, it tends to under-predict the evaporation rate, which results in a larger pressure drop through the riser. The observation that the void fraction close to the wall is higher than that in the riser center evidences that the reliable modeling of bubble size distribution as well as the inclusion of non-drag forces are important for predicting the transverse void distribution. Furthermore, it reveals that both the temperature and pressure change in an FII, and their effects on phase change should be taken into account simultaneously.

We conducted boiling flow experiments and measured the void fraction in a 3 x 3 rod bundle with a spacer grid using high resolution X-ray computed tomography. We focused on the effects of mass and heat flux on the void fraction downstream of the spacer. We found that the void fraction increases as the flow passes through the vanes and then decreases downstream until 𝑍 ≈ 4𝐷ℎ , and then increases again. In addition, we found that the mixing vanes cause a local increase in void fraction even at low heat flux or high mass flux, and that the arrangement of the vanes influences the size and location of the high and low void content regions. We also found that the effect of heat flux on the relative void fraction is more noticeable at high mass flux than at low mass flux. Furthermore, the experimental database obtained in this study can be used to validate CFD simulations.

Pressure relief by blowdown is one of the most important measures to prevent excessive pressures in the primary circuit or containment in severe nuclear accidents. Pool scrubbing can significantly reduce the release of radioactive materials, e.g., aerosols, to the environment during the pressure relief. The decontamination factor indicating the particle retention efficiency depends, among other factors, on the hydrodynamic conditions of the gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the pool. In the present work, the hydrodynamics in two typical pool scrubbing experiments is investigated with the two-fluid model, and the influence of some key factors including bubble diameter, nozzle submergence as well as interaction models are analysed. One case is a rectangular pool and the other is a cylindrical column, and their injection Weber number is around 2×103 and 4×105, respectively. The numerical results show that as the distance from the nozzle exit increases, the void fraction and velocity field expand from the central region, where the nozzle is located, to the whole cross section. The profile and its development depends largely on the bubble size and the interaction force model. It reveals that in the monodisperse simulation, the tuning of bubble diameter is necessary for achieving good agreement, although it is difficult for high velocity gas injection. More information is required to properly describe the bubble size distribution as well as its evolution in pool scrubbing conditions. Furthermore, the experimental data show clear drag reduction in the bubble swarm generated by the gas jet, and the mechanism and model improvement possibilities need to be investigated.

To compare the thermo-hydraulic and particle deposition characteristics of supercritical CO2 (SCO2) in different tubes, the SCO2 thermal-hydraulic performance and particle deposition characteristics were numerically investigated. Three different tube types, including circular tubes, semi-circular tubes and square tubes, were created. The effects of cross sections on heat transfer and particle type, mass flux and heat flux on particle deposition were investigated and discussed. The results indicated that the heat transfer coefficients (h) reach the peaks when the bulk temperature (Tb) is just below pseudo-critical temperature (Tpc) among three tubes. The h peaks are 4.8 kW/(m2·K), 8.4 kW/(m2·K) and 7.9 kW/(m2·K) for circular, semi-circular and square tubes, respectively. The semi-circular tube has the best heat transfer performance and it could alleviate the buoyancy effect efficiently. Moreover, the corners of the semicircular and square tubes should be further optimized to avoid excessive temperatures. The particle deposition efficiency (η) is 79.6%, 76.1% and 84.4% for circular, semicircular and square tubes, respectively, at dp=1 μm. Polydispersity is a challenging feature of many industrial and environmental multiphase flows, influencing all related transfer and transport processes. Besides their size, the fluid or solid particles may be distributed with respect to other properties such as their velocity or shape. Here, a population balance model based on the method of classes is combined with a multifluid solver within the open source computational fluid dynamics library OpenFOAM. The model allows for tracking the evolution of one or more size-conditioned secondary properties. It is applied to two different problems, the first being bubbly flow of air and water in a vertical pipe, where considering the velocity as a secondary property allows to resolve the size-dependent radial segregation. The second application is the gas phase synthesis of titania powder, where non-spherical particle aggregates appear whose shape is modeled through a collision diameter, leading to an improved prediction of the size distribution.

The MUSIG (Multiple Size Group) model in the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX is a population balance approach for describing binary bubble coalescence and breakup events. It is widely used in the simulation of poly-dispersed bubbly flows. The purpose of this work is to identify the internal inconsistencies in the discrete method that is applied for the solution of the population balance equation in MUSIG, and to propose an internally consistent one for discretising the source and sink terms that result from bubble coalescence and breakup. The new formulation is superior to the existing ones in preserving both mass and number density of bubbles, allowing arbitrary discretisation schemes and is free of costly numerical integrations. The numerical results on the evolution of bubble size distributions in bubbly flows reveal that the inconsistency in the original MUSIG regarding bubble breakup is non-negligible for both academic and practical cases. The discussion on the effect of internal inconsistency as well as updates to the model presented in this work are necessary and important for calibration of bubble coalescence and breakup models using the MUSIG approach.

The separation efficiency of a vane-type separator is greatly affected by swirl instability. The separator consists of a swirling vane, a recovery vane and a main pipe. Driven by centrifugal force, the bubbly flow tends to develop into stratified flow with a continuous gas core floating in the central axis of the separator and facilitating the separation. Yet, the straight gas core can turn into a double helix under some circumstances, for example, if the pressure difference across the orifices of recovery vane falls below the critical value, and swirl instability occurs. In order to reveal the underlying mechanism, a device with adjustable operating pressure was introduced to reproduce the dynamic process of gas core transform between stable and unstable. With the increase of pressure difference, the gas core morphology near the recovery vane will turn from double-helix to straight-line within several seconds. The whole process was investigated further by using the tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV). Results show that the development of vorticity structures in the swirl flow gives rise to the evolution of gas core morphology and keeps it stable. Furthermore, the direction of axial velocity, which becomes negative by low pressure differences, is found to be crucial in controlling the formation of inner forced vortex and hence leading to the occurrence of swirl instability. In addition, the magnitude of positive axial velocity is identified to be of great significance in vorticity enhancement.

Single bubble rising in the close vicinity of a vertical wall is one of the focuses in the field of gas-liquid two-phase flow. In this work, three-dimensional direct numerical simulation based on volume of fluid (VOF) and adaptive mesh refinement method is performed to investigate the bubble rising and wake structures near a vertical wall. The bubble migration trajectory, deformation, velocity and wake structures were analyzed under various Galileo numbers and initial wall distances. Bubbles with a Galileo number of 8.8 significantly migrate away from the wall, which is driven by the repulsive force as a result of the suppression of the vortex diffusion on the bubble surface. As the Galileo number increases, the asymmetry of the shedding vortex tends to play a vital role on the repulsive force, which is exacerbated by the presence of the vertical wall. A periodic shedding of the vortex appears behind the bubble when the Galileo number reaches at 95. Meanwhile, the bubble trajectory changes from rectilinear to spiral along with a periodic oscillation. Due to the interaction between the vertical wall and the bubble wake, a transition from a rectilinear rising path to a spiral rising path is more likely to occur compared to that without a vertical wall. The presence of a vertical wall contributes to bubble-rising oscillations. A decrease of the bubble terminal velocity due to viscous effect near the vertical wall is observed for bubbles at low Galileo numbers. However, the viscous effect is less pronounced as the Galileo number increases.

Bubbly flow still represents a challenge for large-scale numerical simulation. Among many others, the understanding and modelling of bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) are far from being satisfactory even though continuous efforts have been made. In particular, the buoyancy of the bubbles generally introduces turbulence anisotropy in the flow, which cannot be captured by the standard eddy viscosity models with specific source terms representing BIT. Recently, on the basis of bubble-resolving direct numerical simulation data, a new Reynolds-stress model considering BIT was developed by Ma et al. (J Fluid Mech, 883: A9 (2020)) within the Euler—Euler framework. The objective of the present work is to assess this model and compare its performance with other standard Reynolds-stress models using a systematic test strategy. We select the experimental data in the BIT-dominated range and find that the new model leads to major improvements in the prediction of full Reynolds-stress components.

In this work, the capabilities of state-of-the-art turbulence models are compared for a three-dimensional flow (3D) field within a constricted vertical pipe. The considered flow domain is a vertical pipe section with a baffleshaped flow constriction which leads to the development of a jet flow through and a recirculation flow region behind the constriction. Different Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models were tested for single- and two-phase flow simulations. In the two-phase simulations, bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) was also considered by adding source terms in the k and ε/ω equations. The results are validated against experimental data. We employed hot-film anemometry (HFA) for liquid velocity measurement and combined it with ultrafast X-ray computed tomography (UFXCT), which provides gas phase data. Based on the local phase-indicator function obtained from the tomographic image data, we can correct HFA signals, which become corrupted by bubble contacts. We found that for single-phase flow all RANS models predict axial velocity well while radial velocity prediction is inadequate. LES models, however, achieve a better prediction of the latter. For two-phase flow, the axial component of the liquid velocity is well captured by all RANS models and the radial component of the liquid velocity is predicted better than for single-phase flow. In general, the computationally less costly RNG k-ε model performs similar to the SSG RSM model and can therefore be recommended for simulation of complex flow scenarios.

Heat transfer on a vapor bubble rising in superheated liquid is investigated by direct numerical simulation. The vapor–liquid system is described by the one-fluid formulation with the level set method capturing the interface. The proportional-integral-derivative controller is employed to keep the bubble's location fixed and evaluate interfacial forces. The heat transfer performance featured by the Nusselt number is evaluated based on the energy balance. Simulations are carried out for the bubble Reynolds number ranging from 20 to 500 and Morton number from 1.10 × 10−10 to 3.80 × 10−4. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on the effect of bubble deformation and oscillation on interfacial heat transfer. The results show that the front part of the bubble contributes to the majority of the interfacial heat transfer, while the rear part mainly affects the oscillation amplitude of the total heat transfer. The interface stretch during bubble oscillation is considered as a key mechanism in enhancing the instantaneous Nusselt number. The potential flow solution of the averaged Nusselt number is corrected by considering the influence of the aspect ratio. This research provides additional insights into the mechanism of interfacial heat transfer, and the results apply equally to interfacial mass transfer.

The baseline model for the CFD-simulation of turbulent bubbly flows in the Euler-Euler framework was proposed several years ago. It defines a fixed set of closures including all constants to avoid case by case tuning and to have a basis for sustainable model development. The present paper extends the baseline model by improving the modelling of bubble-induced turbulence. The closure terms in the transport equations of the k-ω SST model are revisited and replaced with the model recently proposed by Ma et al. (Ma et al., 2017. Physical Review Fluids 2, 034301) which is based on an analysis of the turbulent kinetic energy budget obtained from direct numerical simulation data. Detailed validation results for various flow configurations with a wide range of gas and liquid volumetric fluxes are presented. In case of vertical pipe flow significant improvements in the predicted gas volume fraction and velocity profiles are obtained, especially in high gas volume fraction cases where bubble-induced turbulence is dominant. Simulations of other configurations, such as uniform and non-uniform bubble columns, show that the model of Ma et al. (2017) results in an also for these cases overall improvement. Therefore, the baseline model is now updated to include the new model for bubble-induced turbulence.

In line with the best practice guidelines for computational fluid dynamics in nuclear reactor safety, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden – Rossendorf proposed an Euler-Euler baseline closure concept some years ago. The consideration is that simulations with a fixed set of closures instead of case by case tuning may help to identify model inadequacy and facilitate further improvement. Currently, the baseline model concerns interphase momentum and turbulence exchange as well as bubble coalescence and breakup. It has been tested for a wide range of isothermal applications with different geometrical configurations and material systems. In the present work, the baseline model is extended to non-isothermal flows by including a mechanistic model for the computation of overall interphase heat transfer coefficient. The extended baseline model is validated for both bubble-growing in superheated liquid and -condensing in sub-cooled liquid. The baseline model proposal is independent on the use of a certain CFD code. The presented simulation is carried out with the commercial software ANSYS CFX by employing the best practice guidelines. The simulated liquid temperature, gas volume fraction, vapor bubble size and velocity are compared with the measured ones. The effectivity of the model is demonstrated by a general good agreement.

The phenomena of initially subcooled liquid flashing into vapour due to depressurization frequently occur in the nature and technology. They are very complex systems, and the fluid dynamics is affected by the interplay of many different sub phenomena, including bubble nucleation, evaporation, condensation, coalescence, and breakup. Research on the flashing flows has received much attention, but CFD modelling and simulation of such scenarios is still challenging, because knowledge is often insufficient for a precise mathematical description of the physical problems. Attempts of numerical analysis having been made before are all based on the assumption of mono-disperse bubbles by prescribing either the size or number density or using a mixture model, which deviates largely from the physical picture. In the present work, a CFD-PBM coupled approach is extended for the investigation of bubble dynamics in a flashing pipe flow. The comparison with experimental data demonstrates that the model is effective in capturing the physics of vapour bubbles’ generation and growth as well as their spatial motion and distribution during the decompression. Although further polishing of the bubble coalescence and breakup as well as interphase momentum and turbulence transfer models is necessary, the agreement between measured and simulated cross-section averaged flow parameters such as void fraction, liquid temperature and bubble size distribution is satisfying. The wide range of bubble size changing confirms the necessity of using a poly-disperse approach instead of mono-disperse assumptions.

Urologic cancers, comprising prostate carcinoma (PCa), renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and bladder carcinoma (BCa), were the commonly occurred carcinoma amid males. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) with the length of more than 200 nt functioned importantly in physiological and pathological advancement. Nevertheless, further investigation regarding lncRNA expression feature and function in urologic cancers should be essential. This study is aimed at uncovering the roles of the differently expressed lncRNAs in urologic cancers. The data of gene expression levels was downloaded from lncRNAtor datasets. The lncRNA expression pattern existing in different urologic cancers was assessed by hierarchical clustering analysis. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and KEGG pathway analysis were separately applied to evaluate the biological function and process and the biological pathways involving differently expressed lncRNAs. Our results indicated that 18 lncRNA expressions were increased, and 16 lncRNA expressions were reduced in urologic cancers after comparison with that in normal tissues. Moreover, our results demonstrated 61, 422, 137, and 281 lncRNAs were specifically dysregulated in bladder cancer (BLCA), kidney renal clear cell cancer (KIRC), kidney renal papillary cell cancer (KIRP), and prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD), respectively. Bioinformatics analysis showed that differently expressed lncRNAs displayed crucially in urologic cancers. The prognostic value of common and cancer-specific differently expressed lncRNAs, such as PVT1, in cancer outcomes, was emphasized here. Our research has deeply unearthed the mechanism of differently expressed lncRNAs in urologic cancers development.

Eulerian-Eulerian computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models allow the prediction of complex and large-scale industrial multiphase gas–liquid bubbly flows with a relatively limited computational load. However, the interfacial transfer processes are entirely modelled, with closure relations that often dictate the accuracy of the entire model. Numerous sets of closures have been developed, often optimized over few experimental data sets and achieving remarkable accuracy that, however, becomes difficult to replicate outside of the range of the selected data. This makes a reliable comparison of available model capabilities difficult and obstructs their further development. In this paper, the CFD models developed at the University of Leeds and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf are benchmarked against a large database of bubbly flows in vertical pipes. The research groups adopt a similar modelling strategy, aimed at identifying a single universal set of widely applicable closures. The main focus of the paper is interfacial momentum transfer, which essentially governs the void fraction distribution in the flow, and turbulence modelling closures. To focus on these aspects, the validation database is limited to experiments with a monodispersed bubble diameter distribution. Overall, the models prove to be reliable and robust and can be applied with confidence over the range of parameters tested. Areas are identified where further development is needed, such as the modelling of bubble-induced turbulence and the near-wall region, as well as the best features of both models to be combined in a future harmonized model. A benchmark is also established and is available for the testing of other models. Similar exercises are encouraged to support the confident application of multiphase CFD models, together with the definition of a set of experiments accepted community-wide for model benchmarking.

In the present paper, an Euler-Euler two-fluid model combined with the baseline model, which is a set of closures for the interfacial momentum and turbulence transfer, is validated against experimental data for low Reynolds number bubbly flows in vertical pipes. The model has already been validated for high Reynolds number pipe flows and bubble columns in the previous work (Liao et al., 2019, Chem. Eng. Sci. 202, 55–69). To further substantiate the k − ω SST model with consideration of bubble-induced source included in the baseline model, it is of interest to examine it for low Reynolds number pipe flows, where the bulk is laminar and the transition to turbulence is induced sorely by the agitation of bubbles. Simulations are configured and carried out in the open source CFD code OpenFOAM for eight test cases. Each of them has a different combination of gas and liquid volumetric flow rates. The numerical results are then compared with the experimental data taken from the literature. The comparison is based on different parameters including air void fraction, mean bubble velocity, mean liquid velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress. Although, confirming results with the experimental data are presented but further improvement of the model for turbulent transition as well as inter-phase momentum transfer is necessary. Reliable prediction of the velocity profile in single-phase and extremely sparse bubbly flow cases is shown, and the phase distribution in fully-developed cases is well captured. In addition to the bulk Reynolds number and void fraction, the pipe-to-bubble size ratio is found to have definite influence on the laminar-turbulent transition.

A unified set of closures have been applied to simulating different configurations and fluids, i.e. pipe flow and bubble column, air/water and air/liquid metal. The simulated velocity, void fraction and turbulence profiles were compared with the measured ones. Starting from the baseline model for poly-disperse flows the present work is intended to prove the performance of a recently published model for bubble-induced turbulence, which was established on the basis of physical analyses and direct numerical simulation data. The model is shown to work well under various conditions without any need of tuning, and significant improvement in the prediction of turbulence parameters in comparison to other models is demonstrated. This is a great step towards developing the baseline closure concept. Finally, a brief discussion on the further development and future work regarding Eulerian closure models was given.

The accuracy of the modelling of gas–liquid flows depends strongly on a suitable modelling of the interfacial forces. Among these, drag is dominant. Most drag models reported in the literature have been derived and validated only for laminar or low-turbulent flow conditions. In this study, we numerically evaluated several drag models from the literature for high-turbulent gas–liquid flow around an obstacle in a pipe that creates a distinct vortex region. We performed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and compared the void fraction and gas velocity profiles with experimental data obtained by ultrafast X-ray computed tomography. We found that all models, except Schiller&Naumann and Feng, predicted the void fraction well compared to experimental data upstream of the obstacle, i.e., for a developed two-phase pipe flow with axial symmetry. However, the void fraction downstream is greatly overestimated by all models except those that appropriately consider the turbulence effects. Based on the results, a hybrid drag model is proposed that significantly improves the prediction of the void fraction.

A review of published work on the physics and modelling of flashing flows is presented. The term “flashing” refers to a familiar phase change phenomenon initiated by pressure drop. It has gained a great deal of attention due to various industrial safety concerns. Nevertheless, knowledge about the involved physical processes such as formation and growth of bubbles in superheated liquid, and information for appropriate modelling in practical systems is still far from sufficiency. The present work is aimed to provide a brief but comprehensive overview of available theoretical models for these sub-phenomena as well as general modelling frameworks. This kind of review is necessary and helpful for further understanding and investigation of flashing flows in more detail.

The aim of the present study was to explore the expression levels of tumor suppressor candidate 3 (TUSC3) in human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and its clinical value. Immunohistochemical staining, western blotting and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to detect TUSC3 expression in paracancerous normal tissues and ccRCC tissues. The tissues were derived from the pathological specimens of 54 patients with ccRCC. Additionally, associations among TUSC3 expression and histological grade and clinicopathological staging of ccRCC were investigated. Objective: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most prevalent types of cancer among men worldwide. The incidence of PCa is increasing in China. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify novel diagnostic and prognostic markers for PCa to improve the treatment of the disease. Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and GEO database were used to analyze the expression of miR-192, and the relationship between miR-192 and the clinical features of patients with PCa. Cell cycle and cell proliferation assay were used to detect the functional roles of miR-192 in PCa. Bioinformatic analysis for miR-192–5p was performed using gene ontology and KEGG analysis. Results: By analyzing the dataset of TCGA, we found that miR-192 was overexpressed in PCa samples compared to normal tissues and was upregulated in high-grade PCa compared to low-grade PCa. We also observed that higher miR-192 expression was associated with a shorter biochemical recurrence-free survival time. Our results also demonstrated that miR-192 promoted PCa cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. Conclusion: These results suggest that miR-192 may be considered for use as a potential diagnostic and therapeutic target of PCa.

Two-equation turbulence models based on the Boussinesq eddy viscosity hypothesis that have been used in the vast majority of previous simulation studies on bubbly pipe flows contain a term which renders the radial pressure distribution non-constant. In single phase simulations this effect is invariably absorbed in the definition of a modified pressure, from which the real pressure may be recovered if necessary. For bubbly multiphase flows however, this is not possible since the bubbles experience a force which depends, of course, on the real pressure rather than the modified one. As it turns out, most software codes by default rely on the approximation of neglecting the difference between modified and real pressure for bubbly flows. The purpose of the present study is to assess the influence of this approximation on the final simulations results. Fortunately it turns out that at least for the conditions considered in this study, the error is small.

In the present study, we assessed the capabilities of Eulerian-Eulerian CFD two-phase flow simulation with the homogeneous Multiple Size Group Model (MUSIG) and consideration of breakup and coalescence under three-dimensional flow conditions. We compared void fraction, bubble size and bubble velocity distributions against experimental data from vertical gas-disperse two-phase flow in a pipe with a flow obstruction. The simulation results generally agree well upstream the obstacle, where we have a typically developed pipe flow. Downstream of the obstacle void fraction is overpredicted while bubble velocity is underpredicted. The bubble size distribution has no clear trend. With higher liquid velocities, the deviations increase. As a conclusion, the simulation has difficulties to balance the gas fraction in the strong vortex in the shadow of the obstacle. Here further model improvement is needed.

Vaginal oligometastatic disease of colorectal primary is a rare malignancy with few reported cases in the literature and no standardized treatment paradigm. We report on the definitive management of an unusual case of an elderly woman with the aforementioned disease. A 78-year-old African-American woman presented with vaginal spotting and was found to have a vaginal lesion. Final pathology was consistent with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of colorectal primary. Extensive work up, which included endoscopies, pathologic analyzes, and imaging workup, did not reveal a primary gastrointestinal malignancy. The patient underwent partial vaginectomy and final pathology once again confirmed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of colorectal primary (CDX 2 and CEA positive, ER/PR, and CK 7 negative) with negative margins. She went on to receive adjuvant concurrent chemoradiation with 5-FU based chemotherapy. She received 45 Gy in 25 fractions to the whole pelvis followed by an HDR brachytherapy boost to 12 Gy in two fractions. Unfortunately, 10 months after completing radiation, she was found to have adenocarcinoma arising from a hepatic flexure colon polyp on colonoscopy. She required definitive surgical resection and was staged as mpT3N0M1. She received 12 cycles of 5-FU and at 2-year follow-up was found to be disease free with no evidence of locoregional recurrence or distant metastatic disease. Continued long-term follow up is warranted.

The flashing flow is a relevant multiphase phenomenon in many technical applications including nuclear safety analysis, which has been the subject of intense research for several decades. Numerical studies have evolved from one-dimensional to multi-dimensional. A variety of methods has been proposed, while a broad consensus does not exist yet. The present work aims to present an overview of available models and assess their limitations and perspectives by conducting an extensive literature survey. The final focus was put on recent progresses of computational fluid dynamics simulations. Some consensus on modelling interfacial slip, phase change mechanism and bubble size is identified. Since flashing scenarios often accompanying with high void fraction and broad bubble size range, a poly-disperse two-fluid model is recommended. Thermal phase change model is superior to pressure phase change, relaxation and equilibrium models for practical flashing problems, however incorporation of pressure effects is desirable. Major challenges comprise improving closure models for interphase transfer, bubble dynamics processes, interfacial area as well two-phase turbulence. For this purpose, high-resolution high quality experimental data are important, which are lacking in many cases. Considering that heterogeneous gas structures often exist in flashing flows, multi-field approaches able to handle different shapes of gas-liquid interface and including the shape effect in closure models are recommended for further study.

The condensation of saturated steam bubbles in sub-cooled water inside a vertical pipe was studied by poly-disperse CFD simulations. Six test cases with varied pressure, liquid sub-cooling and diameter of the gas injection orifices were simulated. Baseline closures presented for non-drag forces in previous work were found to be reliable also in non-isothermal cases. The effect of bubble coalescence and breakup is over-weighting in the region close to steam injection in case of small orifice diameter. With the increase of orifice diameter, breakup becomes dominant in determining bubble size change. The effect of interphase heat transfer coefficient correlations was investigated. The widespread Ranz–Marshall correlation was found to under-estimate the condensation rate, especially at high pressure levels. In contrast, satisfying agreement with the experimental data was obtained by the Tomiyama correlation.

The modeling of two-phase flows has always been limited to special cases due to the very complex nature of its interface. When considering vertical pipe flows with low gas volume flow rates, bubbly flow occurs. With increasing gas volume flow rates larger bubbles are generated by bubble coalescence, which further leads to transition to slug, churn-turbulent, and annular flow. Considering, as an example, a heated tube producing steam by evaporation, as in the case of a vertical steam generator, all these flow patterns including transitions are expected to occur in the system. Despite extensive attempts, robust and accurate simulations approaches for such conditions are still lacking. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art on the understanding of the physics behind churn-turbulent flow, and transitions to and from this flow pattern. Both, benefits and limitations of the existent experimental approaches and their usefulness for model development and validation at these high void fraction conditions are discussed. Limitation of both, low-dimensional approaches (0D, 1D, and 2D), and high resolution approaches such as Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) are analyzed. Averaging procedures, such as the Eulerian–Eulerian approach including the interfacial momentum closures which has been used in the past for simulating churn flow, are review thoroughly. Finally, possible improvements are proposed.

The two- or multi-fluid approach is frequently used for Nuclear Reactor Safety (NRS)-related simulations of gas-liquid flows. To enable reliable predictions the closure models have to reflect the involved local physical phenomena at the non-resolved scale properly. To consolidate the CFD-modelling in the frame of the multi-fluid approach the so-called baseline model strategy was recently proposed (Lucas et al., 2016). The present technical note discusses a long-term strategy for the baseline model development and ways to obtain or improve closure models. Guidelines for the model development are given by listing requirements for appropriate closure models as well as frequently made mistakes. This is illustrated by examples for recent developments done for HZDR baseline models for poly-disperse bubbly flows.

Passive cooling systems driven by natural circulation are common design features of proposals for advanced reactors. The natural circulation systems are inherently more unstable than forced circulation ones due to its nonlinear nature and low driving force. Any disturbance, e.g. flashing or boiling inception, in the driving force will affect the flow which in turn will influence the driving force leading to an oscillatory behavior. Owing to safety concerns, flashing instability particularly for advanced boiling water reactors has been broadly investigated, and many test facilities have been constructed in the past. A number of numerical analyses of experimental test cases are available. Nevertheless, there exists a need to update the method from one-dimensional system codes to high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the present work flashing-induced instability behavior and flow pattern in the riser of the GENEVA facility, which is a downscale of a reactor containment passive cooling system, is investigated using the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX. A two-fluid model is adopted for the unstable turbulent gas-liquid flow, and the HZDR baseline closure is used to model interphase mass, momentum, heat transfer as well as bubble-induced turbulence. The simulated fluid temperature, pressure and local void fraction at different heights of the riser are compared with the measured ones. The limitation and possibility of the CFD technique for such complex two-phase scenarios are discussed, and suggestions for improving the predictability of simulations are made.
