Abstract Timely and effective diagnosis of fungal keratitis (FK) is necessary for suitable treatment and avoiding irreversible vision loss for patients. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) has been widely adopted to guide the FK diagnosis. We present a deep learning framework for diagnosing fungal keratitis using IVCM images to assist ophthalmologists. Inspired by the real diagnostic process, our method employs a two-stage deep architecture for diagnostic predictions based on both image-level and sequence-level information. To the best of our knowledge, we collected the largest dataset with 96,632 IVCM images in total with expert labeling to train and evaluate our method. The specificity and sensitivity of our method in diagnosing FK on the unseen test set achieved 96.65% and 97.57%, comparable or better than experienced ophthalmologists. The network can provide image-level, sequence-level and patient-level diagnostic suggestions to physicians. The results show great promise for assisting ophthalmologists in FK diagnosis.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary Bacillus velezensis KNF-209 (BV-KNF-209) on the growth performance, immunity, and gut health of broilers. A total of 540 one-day-old male Cobb-500 broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups of 6 replicates with 18 broilers per replicate. Dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal basal diets supplemented with 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BV-KNF-209 (CON, BV 50, BV 100, BV 200, and BV 400 groups, respectively) for 42 d. Compared with the CON group, the average daily gains (ADG) at 0 to 42 d in the BV 100 and BV 200 groups were significantly increased (P < 0.01), and the feed-to-gain (F:G) ratios were significantly decreased at 0 to 21 d (P < 0.01) and 0 to 42 d (P < 0.05). The BV 200 and BV 400 groups had higher serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels at d 21 and 42 (P < 0.05). The serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly decreased in the BV 50, BV 100, and BV 200 groups at d 21 (P < 0.05), and serum IL-1β and IL-6 levels were also reduced in the BV 100 and BV 200 groups at d 42 (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, increased interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in the jejunal and ileal mucosa at d 42 were observed in the BV 100, BV 200, and BV 400 groups (P < 0.05), while the IL-1β and IL-6 levels (P < 0.01) were decreased. The BV 200 and BV 400 groups showed significantly higher activities of lipase and trypsin (P < 0.05) in jejunal digesta as well as higher activities of amylase and trypsin (P < 0.01) in ileal digesta at d 42. The cecal acetic acid and propionic acid levels in the BV groups and lactic acid levels in the BV 50, BV 100, and BV 200 groups (P < 0.05) were significantly higher compared to those in the CON group. Overall, dietary BV-KNF-209 supplementation significantly improved broiler growth performance, an effect that may have been achieved by heightening immunity, increasing digestive enzyme activity, and raising intestinal short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid levels.

The pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, responsible for a variety of diseases, poses a considerable threat to global crop yields. Emerging biocontrol strategies employ antagonistic microorganisms, utilizing phyllosphere microecology and systemic resistance to combat this disease. However, the interactions between phyllosphere microbial dynamics and the activation of the plant defense system remain poorly understood. Here we show significant alterations in phyllosphere microbiota structure and plant gene expression following the application of biocontrol agents. We reveal enhanced collaboration and integration of Sphingomonas and Methylobacterium within the microbial co-occurrence network. Notably, Sphingomonas inhibits P. syringae by disrupting pathogen chemotaxis and virulence. Additionally, both Sphingomonas and Methylobacterium activate plant defenses by upregulating pathogenesis-related gene expression through abscisic acid, ethylene, jasmonate acid, and salicylic acid signaling pathways. Our results highlighted that biocontrol agents promote plant health, from reconstructing beneficial microbial consortia to enhancing plant immunity. The findings enrich our comprehension of the synergistic interplays between phyllosphere microbiota and plant immunity, offering potential enhancements in biocontrol efficacy for crop protection.

ABSTRACTThe contamination of the plant phyllosphere with antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), caused by application of antibiotics, is a significant environmental issue in agricultural management. Alternatively, biocontrol agents are environmentally friendly and have attracted a lot of interest. However, the influence of biocontrol agents on the phyllosphere resistome remains unknown. In this study, we applied biocontrol agents to control the wildfire disease in the Solanaceae crops and investigated their effects on the resistome and the pathogen in the phyllosphere by using metagenomics. A total of 250 ARGs were detected from 15 samples, which showed a variation in distribution across treatments of biocontrol agents (BA), BA with Mg2+ (T1), BA with Mn2+ (T2), and kasugamycin (T3) and nontreated (CK). The results showed that the abundance of ARGs under the treatment of BA-Mg2+ was lower than that in the CK group. The abundance of cphA3 (carbapenem resistance), PME-1 (carbapenem resistance), tcr3 (tetracycline antibiotic resistance), and AAC (3)-VIIIa (aminoglycoside antibiotic resistance) in BA-Mg2+ was significantly higher than that in BA-Mn2+ (P < 0.05). The abundance of cphA3, PME_1, and tcr3 was significantly negatively related to the abundance of the phyllosphere pathogen Pseudomonas syringae (P < 0.05). We also found that the upstream and downstream regions of cphA3 were relatively conserved, in which rpl, rpm, and rps gene families were identified in most sequences (92%). The Ka/Ks of cphA3 was 0 in all observed sequences, indicating that under the action of purifying selection, nonsynonymous substitutions are often gradually eliminated in the population. Overall, this study clarifies the effect of biocontrol agents with Mg2+ on the distribution of the phyllosphere resistome and provides evolutionary insights into the biocontrol process.IMPORTANCEOur study applied metagenomics analysis to examine the impact of biocontrol agents (BAs) on the phyllosphere resistome and the pathogen. Irregular use of antibiotics has led to the escalating dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. The majority of BA research has focused on the effect of monospecies on the plant disease control process, the role of the compound BA with nutrition elements in the phyllosphere disease, and the resistome is still unknown. We believe BAs are eco-friendly alternatives for antibiotics to combat the transfer of ARGs. Our results revealed that BA-Mg2+ had a lower relative abundance of ARGs compared to the CK group, and the phyllosphere pathogen Pseudomonas syringae was negatively related to three specific ARGs, cphA3, PME-1, and tcr3. These three genes also present different Ka/Ks. We believe that the identification of the distribution and evolution modes of ARGs further elucidates the ecological role and facilitates the development of BAs, which will attract general interest in this field.

Netrin-1 was initially discovered as a neuronal growth cue for axonal guidance, and its functions have later been identified in inflammation, tumorigenesis, neurodegeneration, and other disorders. We have recently found its alterations in the brains with Alzheimer’s disease, which might provide important clues to the mechanisms of some unique pathologies. To provide better understanding of this promising molecule, we here summarize research progresses in genetics, pathology, biochemistry, cell biology and other studies of Netrin-1 about its mechanistic roles and biomarker potentials with an emphasis on clinical neurodegenerative disorders in order to expand understanding of this promising molecular player in human diseases.

The metaverse signifies the amalgamation of virtual and tangible realms through human-computer interaction. The seamless integration of human, cyber, and environments within ubiquitous computing plays a pivotal role in fully harnessing the metaverse’s capabilities. Nevertheless, metaverse operating systems face substantial hurdles in terms of accessing ubiquitous resources, processing information while safeguarding privacy and security, and furnishing artificial intelligence capabilities to downstream applications. To tackle these challenges, this paper introduces the UbiMeta model, a specialized ubiquitous operating system designed specifically for the metaverse. It extends the capabilities of traditional ubiquitous operating systems and focuses on adapting downstream models and operational capacity to effectively function within the metaverse. UbiMeta comprises four layers: the Ubiquitous Resource Management Layer (URML), the Autonomous Information Mastery Layer (AIML), the General Intelligence Mechanism Layer (GIML), and the Metaverse Ecological Model Layer (MEML). The URML facilitates the seamless incorporation and management of various external devices and resources. It provides a framework for integrating and controlling these resources, including virtualization, abstraction, and reuse. The AIML is responsible for perceiving information and safeguarding privacy and security during storage and processing. The GIML leverages large-scale pre-trained deep-learning feature extractors to obtain effective features for processing information. The MEML focuses on constructing metaverse applications using the principles of Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) and the OODA loop (Observation, Orientation, Decision, Action). It leverages the vast amount of information collected by the URML and AIML layers to build a robust metaverse ecosystem. Furthermore, this study explores how UbiMeta enhances user experiences and fosters innovation in various metaverse domains. It highlights the potential of UbiMeta in revolutionizing medical healthcare, industrial practices, education, and agriculture within the metaverse.

Insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are widely used in power electronic devices, and their health prediction problems have attracted much attention in the field of power electronic equipment health management. The performance degradation of IGBT gate oxide is one of the most important failure modes. In order to analyze this failure mechanism and the ease of implementation of a monitoring circuit, the gate leakage current of IGBTs was selected as the fault precursor parameter for the degradation of their gate oxide performance, and feature selection and fusion were carried out by using time domain characteristic analysis, grayscale correlation, Mahalanobis distance, Kalman filter, and other methods. Thus, a health indicator was obtained to characterize the degradation of IGBT performance, which was used to indicate the degree of aging of the IGBT gate oxide layer. In this paper, we propose an improved degradation prediction model called MultiScaleFormer, inspired by advanced design ideas of the iTransformer network architecture, combined with the health parameters of IGBTs to construct a degradation prediction model for the IGBT gate oxide layer. MultiScaleFormer showed the highest fitting accuracy compared with the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), CNN-LSTM, and Transformer models in our experiment. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the MultiScaleFormer prediction was as low as 0.0087. Extraction of the health indicator and the construction and verification of the degradation prediction model were carried out on the dataset released by the NASA-Ames Laboratory. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the gate leakage current as a fault precursor parameter for IGBT gate oxide failure, and the feasibility and accuracy of the MultiScaleFormer prediction model for IGBT performance degradation.

Capacitors are crucial components in power electronic converters, responsible for harmonic elimination, energy buffering, and voltage stabilization. However, they are also the most susceptible to damage due to their operational environment. Accurate temperature estimation of capacitors is essential for monitoring their condition and ensuring the reliability of the converter system. This paper presents a novel method for estimating the core temperature of capacitors using a long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm. The approach incorporates a continued training mechanism to adapt to variable load conditions in converters. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed method’s high accuracy and robustness, making it suitable for real-time capacitor temperature monitoring in practical applications.

To study the relationship between the diversity of the surface microbial community and tobacco flavor, and to improve tobacco quality using microorganisms. The microbial community composition and diversity of 14 samples of flue-cured tobacco from tobacco-producing areas in Yunnan with varying grades were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. PICRUSt was used for predicting microbial functions. A strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens W6-2 with the ability to degrade pectin was screened from the surface of flued-cured tobacco leaves from Yunnan reroasted tobacco leave. The enzyme preparation was prepared through fermentation and then applied for treating flue-cured tobacco. The improvement effect was evaluated by measuring the content of macromolecule and the changes in volatile components, combined with sensory evaluations. The bacterial communities on the surface of flue-cured tobacco exhibited functional diversity, consisting primarily of Variovorax, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Burkholderia, and Bacillus. These bacterial strains played a role in the aging process of flue-cured tobacco leaves by participating in amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. These metabolic activity converted complex macromolecules into smaller molecular compounds, ultimately influence the smoking quality and burning characteristics of flue-cured tobacco. The pectinase preparation produced through fermentation using W6-2 has been found to enhance the aroma and sweetness of flue-cured tobacco, leading to improved aroma, reduced impurities, and enhanced smoothness. Additionally, the levels of pectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose decreased, while the levels of water-soluble sugar and reducing sugar increased, and the contents of esters, ketones, and aldehydes increased, and the contents of benzoic acid decreased. The study revealed the correlation between surface microorganisms and volatile components of Yunnan tobacco leaves, and the enzyme produced by the pectin-degrading bacteria W6-2 effectively improved the quality of flue-cured tobacco.

In the face of high demand for reuse from printing and dyeing industries in centralized wastewater treatment of Jiangsu Province, reverse osmosis (RO) process is routinely used in wastewater recycling. However, the membrane concentrate is high in salinity, with high chromaticity and complex composition. Ozone oxidation, as an efficient and clean advanced oxidation process, is widely used but also suffers from several problems such as poor mass transfer and catalytic efficiency. In this paper, a novel aluminum-carbon based metal-doped composite ozone catalyst was designed, and RO coupling Multi-Catalytic Oxidation was constructed in treating biotreatment tail water. The optimal parameters of catalyst dosage of 0.5 g L−1, ozone concentration of 5 mg L−1 and 30% H2O2 dosage of 10 mg L−1 were obtained. After long-term operation experiments, the combined process has been proven to achieve safe discharge and recycling of the tail water, with low ecological risk to the external water environment.

Biofertilizers have immense potential for enhancing agricultural productivity. However, there is still a need for clarification regarding the specific mechanisms through which these biofertilizers improve soil properties and stimulate plant growth. In this research, a bacterial agent was utilized to enhance plant growth and investigate the microbial modulation mechanism of soil nutrient turnover using metagenomic technology. The results demonstrated a significant increase in soil fast-acting nitrogen (by 46.7%) and fast-acting phosphorus (by 88.6%) upon application of the bacterial agent. This finding suggests that stimulated soil microbes contribute to enhanced nutrient transformation, ultimately leading to improved plant growth. Furthermore, the application of the bacterial agent had a notable impact on the accumulation of key genes involved in nitrogen cycling. Notably, it enhanced nitrification genes (amo, hao, and nar), while denitrification genes (nir and nor) showed a slight decrease. This indicates that ammonium oxidation may be the primary pathway for increasing fast-acting nitrogen in soils. Additionally, the bacterial agent influenced the composition and functional structure of the soil microbial community. Moreover, the metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) obtained from the soil microbial communities exhibited complementary metabolic processes, suggesting mutual nutrient exchange. These MAGs contained widely distributed and highly abundant genes encoding plant growth promotion (PGP) traits. These findings emphasize how soil microbial communities can enhance vegetation growth by increasing nutrient availability and regulating plant hormone production. This effect can be further enhanced by introducing inoculated microbial agents. In conclusion, this study provides novel insights into the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of biofertilizers on soil properties and plant growth. The significant increase in nutrient availability, modulation of key genes involved in nitrogen cycling, and the presence of MAGs encoding PGP traits highlight the potential of biofertilizers to improve agricultural practices. These findings have important implications for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity, with positive societal and environmental impacts.

In this work, the electrical characteristics’ failure due to the chip-level damage and its relationship with the package-level degradation have been investigated for the Cascode GaN device under long-term repetitive power cycling test (PCT). At first, it is found that, the device’s transfer characteristics and threshold voltages have not changed until 8000-cycle PCT, while its on-state current decreases as the increases in cycles number. Meanwhile, the device’s gate-to-source leakage have not changed even after 8000-cycle PCT, but there is a significant increase in drain-to-source leakage. The above phenomenon has been attributed to the structural damage in the gate region of GaN HEMT, which has been verified by TCAD simulation and EMMI analysis. Then, it is found that the device’s thermal resistance is increased after the repetitive power cycling test, which is due to the package-level degradation. The increased thermal resistance will lead to the increase of heat accumulation, which has been verified by TCAD simulation, subsequently leading to the chip-level damage and electrical performance failure for Cascode GaN device. The relevant results may help to improve the long-term reliability of Cascode GaN device.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) based gesture recognition has received broad attention and application in rehabilitation areas for its direct and fine-grained sensing ability. sEMG signals exhibit strong user dependence properties among users with different physiology, causing the inapplicability of the recognition model on new users. Domain adaptation is the most representative method to reduce the user gap with feature decoupling to acquire motion-related features. However, the existing domain adaptation method shows awful decoupling results when handling complex time-series physiological signals. Therefore, this paper proposes an Iterative Self-Training based Domain Adaptation method (STDA) to supervise the feature decoupling process with the pseudo-label generated by self-training and to explore cross-user sEMG gesture recognition. STDA mainly consists of two parts, discrepancy-based domain adaptation (DDA) and pseudo-label iterative update (PIU). DDA aligns existing users’ data and new users’ unlabeled data with a Gaussian kernel-based distance constraint. PIU Iteratively continuously updates pseudo-labels to generate more accurate labelled data on new users with category balance. Detailed experiments are performed on publicly available benchmark datasets, including the NinaPro dataset (DB-1 and DB-5) and the CapgMyo dataset (DB-a, DB-b, and DB-c). Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves significant performance improvement compared with existing sEMG gesture recognition and domain adaption methods.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to apply deep learning techniques for the development and validation of a system that categorizes various phases of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including nascent geographic atrophy (nGA), through the analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.MethodsA total of 3,401 OCT macular images obtained from 338 patients admitted to Shenyang Aier Eye Hospital in 2019–2021 were collected for the development of the classification model. We adopted a convolutional neural network (CNN) model and introduced hierarchical structure along with image enhancement techniques to train a two-step CNN model to detect and classify normal and three phases of dry AMD: atrophy-associated drusen regression, nGA, and geographic atrophy (GA). Five-fold cross-validation was used to evaluate the performance of the multi-label classification model.ResultsExperimental results obtained from five-fold cross-validation with different dry AMD classification models show that the proposed two-step hierarchical model with image enhancement achieves the best classification performance, with a f1-score of 91.32% and a kappa coefficients of 96.09% compared to the state-of-the-art models. The results obtained from the ablation study demonstrate that the proposed method not only improves accuracy across all categories in comparison to a traditional flat CNN model, but also substantially enhances the classification performance of nGA, with an improvement from 66.79 to 81.65%.ConclusionThis study introduces a novel two-step hierarchical deep learning approach in categorizing dry AMD progression phases, and demonstrates its efficacy. The high classification performance suggests its potential for guiding individualized treatment plans for patients with macular degeneration.

Although carbapenem use is prohibited in animals in China, carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC), especially New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing strains, are widely prevalent in food-producing animals. At present, the impact of livestock-associated CREC strains on human populations at the national level is unknown. Here, we conduct a retrospective cross-sectional study to investigate the prevalence of CREC from clinical settings across 22 Chinese provinces or municipalities and analyze anthropogenic factors associated with their presence. We also ascertain the blaNDM and blaKPC abundance among pig and chicken farms and present a detailed genomic framework for CREC of animal and human origin. Overall, 631/29 799 (2.1%) clinical Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates were identified as CREC. Multivariable analysis revealed that being male, an age below 1, an age between 13 and 18, provinces with greater chicken production, and provinces with higher pig production were associated with higher odds of CREC infection. In general, 73.8% (n = 45/61) of pig farms and 62.2% (n = 28/45) of chicken farms had a blaNDM abundance of 1 × 10−5 to 1 × 10−3 and 1 × 10−3 to 1 × 10−2, respectively. Among all the Chinese NDM-positive E. coli (n = 463) available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the genomic analysis revealed that blaNDM-5 and IncX3 were the predominant carbapenemase gene-plasmid combination, while a highly homogeneous relationship between NDM-positive isolates from humans and animals was demonstrated at the plasmid and core genome levels. All the findings suggest frequent CREC transmission between humans and animals, indicating that further discussions on the use of antibiotics in animals and humans are needed, both in China and across the globe.

Abstract Purpose While asthma comorbidities are associated with higher health care utilisation, lower quality of life and poorer asthma control, the impact of asthma comorbidities on hospitalisation for asthma exacerbation (H-AX) remains less recognised. We aim to analyse the impact of asthma comorbidities on H-AX. Methods Based on a national survey on asthma control and disease perception (CARN 2015 study), we analysed the impact of comorbidities on annual incidence and frequency of H-AX in China. Information on demographic characteristics, asthma comorbidities and annual incidence and frequency of H-AX were presented in this study. Results Among 3875 ambulatory asthma patients, 75.9% (2941/3875) had comorbidities, and 26.4% (1017/3858) experienced H-AX during past year. After adjusting for confounding factors such as demographic data, smoking status and asthma control, COPD [OR = 2.189, 95% CI (1.673, 2.863)] and coronary heart disease [OR = 1.387, 95% CI (1.032, 1.864)] were associated with higher annual incidence, while allergic rhinitis [OR = 0.692, 95% CI (0.588, 0.815)] was associated with lower annual incidence, of H-AX. In terms of frequency, allergic rhinitis [OR = 1.630, 95% CI (1.214, 2.187)], COPD [OR = 1.472, 95% CI (1.021, 2.122)] and anxiety [OR = 2.609, 95% CI (1.051, 6.477)] showed statistically significant correlation with frequent H-AX. Conclusions COPD and coronary heart disease were associated with higher annual incidence, while allergic rhinitis was associated with lower annual incidence of H-AX. Allergic rhinitis, COPD and anxiety were associated with frequent H-AX. Comorbidities may have an important role in the risk and frequency of annual hospitalisations due to asthma exacerbation. The goal of asthma control should rely on a multi-disciplinary treatment protocol.

Abstract In this work, a novel AlGaN/GaN lateral field‐effect rectifier (L‐FER) with ultralow turn‐on voltage (VT) and low reverse leakage current (IR) is proposed and verified by technology computer aided design (TCAD) Sentaurus. Through shortly contacting the short‐channel metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) structure with an Ohmic‐contact structure as the anode of the proposed L‐FER, an ultralow VT can be realized. And by inserting a floating clamp (FC) electrode near the cathode‐side MOS edge, the transverse channel potential at the MOS edge could be clamped to a small value. Thus, the high IR induced by the short‐channel effect in the MOS structure could be suppressed. In contrast to the conventional short‐channel L‐FER, the proposed FC‐L‐FER exhibits about four orders of magnitude reduction in IR, without obvious degeneration in the forward current and VT. Moreover, the proposed FC‐L‐FER also delivers excellent reverse recovery characteristics.

Starch is an essential factor affecting the quality of flue-cured tobacco, and high starch content can affect the sensory quality and safety. Recently, the degradation of macromolecules in tobacco raw materials by using additional microorganisms to improve their intrinsic quality and safety has become a new research hotspot in the tobacco industry. However, the technical maturity and application scale are limited. Our study analyzed the correlation between microbial community composition and volatile components on the surface of tobacco leaves from 14 different grades in Fujian tobacco-producing areas. The PICRUSt software was utilized to predict the function of the microbial community present in tobacco leaves. Furthermore, dominant strains that produced amylase were screened out, and an enzyme solution was prepared to enhance the flue-cured tobacco flavor. Changes in the content of macromolecules and volatile components were determined, and sensory evaluations were conducted to assess the overall quality of the tobacco leaves. The results showed that the dominant bacterial genera on the surface of Fujian tobacco leaves were Variovorax, Sphingomonas, Bacillus, etc. Bacillus was positively correlated with various volatile components, which contributed to the sweet and aromatic flavors of Fujian flue-cured tobacco. The main genetic functions of Fujian flue-cured tobacco surface bacteria were carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism. After treating flue-cured tobacco with an enzyme preparation prepared by the fermentation of Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, the content of starch, pectin, and cellulose in flue-cured tobacco decreased significantly compared with the control group. Meanwhile, the content of total soluble sugar and reducing sugar was significantly increased, and the volatile aroma components, such as 3-hydroxy--damascone, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4 H-Pyran-4-one, ethyl palmitate, ethyl linolenic acid, etc., were significantly increased. The aroma quality and quantity of flue-cured tobacco were enhanced, while impurities were reduced. The smoke characteristics were improved, with increased fineness, concentration, and moderate strength. The taste characteristics were also improved, with reduced irritation and a better aftertaste. In conclusion, Bacillus, as the dominant genus in the abundance of bacterial communities on tobacco surfaces in Fujian, had an essential impact on the flavor of tobacco leaves by participating in carbohydrate metabolism and finally forming the unique flavor style of flue-cured tobacco in Fujian tobacco-producing areas. Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, a target strain with amylase-producing ability, was screened from the surface of Fujian flue-cured tobacco. The enzyme preparation, produced by the fermentation of Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, was utilized to reduce the content of macromolecules, increase the content of water-soluble total sugar and reducing sugar, and produce a variety of crucial volatile aroma components, which had a significant improvement on the quality of tobacco leaves.

Model compression is an important topic in deep learning research. It can be mainly divided into two directions: model pruning and model quantization. However, both methods will more or less affect the original accuracy of the model. In this paper, we propose a mutual learning framework for pruned and quantized networks. We regard the pruned network and the quantizated network as two sets of features that are not parallel. The purpose of our mutual learning framework is to better integrate the two sets of features and achieve complementary advantages, which we call it feature augmentation. To verify the effectiveness of our framework, we select a pairwise combination of 3 state-of-the-art pruning algorithms and 3 state-of-theart quantization algorithms. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and Tiny-imagenet show the benefits of our framework: through the mutual learning of the two networks, we obtain a pruning network and a quantization network with higher accuracy at the same time.

Abstract Background It is of critical importance to understand how anammox consortia respond to disturbance events and fluctuations in the wastewater treatment reactors. Although the responses of anammox consortia to operational parameters (e.g., temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations) have frequently been reported in previous studies, less is known about their responses and resilience when they suffer from nutrient interruption. Results Here, we investigated the anammox community states and transcriptional patterns before and after a short-term nutrient starvation (3 days) to determine how anammox consortia respond to and recover from such stress. The results demonstrated that the remarkable changes in transcriptional patterns, rather than the community compositions were associated with the nutritional stress. The divergent expression of genes involved in anammox reactions, especially the hydrazine synthase complex (HZS), and nutrient transportation might function as part of a starvation response mechanism in anammox bacteria. In addition, effective energy conservation and substrate supply strategies (ATP accumulation, upregulated amino acid biosynthesis, and enhanced protein degradation) and synergistic interactions between anammox bacteria and heterotrophs might benefit their survival during starvation and the ensuing recovery of the anammox process. Compared with abundant heterotrophs in the anammox system, the overall transcription pattern of the core autotrophic producers (i.e., anammox bacteria) was highly resilient and quickly returned to its pre-starvation state, further contributing to the prompt recovery when the feeding was resumed. Conclusions These findings provide important insights into nutritional stress-induced changes in transcriptional activities in the anammox consortia and would be beneficial for the understanding of the capacity of anammox consortia in response to stress and process stability in the engineered ecosystems. Aiming at the segmentation nonlinear degradation characteristics of IGBT, the traditional single remaining useful lifetime (RUL) method has low accuracy. This paper proposes a method combining gray prediction and particle filter algorithm. The gray prediction model is used for slow degradation trends prediction in the early stage. When the health precusor parameters reach the fault warning line, the improved particle filter algorithm is used for this stage’s prediction with the characteristics of fast nonlinear degradation. The comparison analysis result shows that the combinatorial prediction algorithms used in this paper can be better for tracking the degradation trends of IGBT, and the prediction accuracy is higher than either of the two single prediction methods.

This work carried out the experimental investigation and model analysis on a GaN electrostatic discharge (ESD) clamp, which features a discharge high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) and a voltage divider formed by a lateral field effect rectifier (L-FER) chain and a resistor in series. Firstly, it is found through the experimental investigation, the turn-on voltage ( $V_{\mathrm {T}}$ ) of GaN ESD clamp’s static current is increased with the increase in L-FER’s number and the decrease in resistor’s value. Then, an analytical model is proposed to analyze the dependence of $V_{\mathrm {T}}$ on L-FER’s number and resistor’s value. And the analytical model exhibits a good consistency with the experimentally measured results, which confirms the validity of the presented analytical model. Lastly, the dependence of GaN ESD clamp’s transmission line pulsing characteristics on the L-FER’s number and resistor’s value is also analyzed. Similarly, GaN ESD clamp’s triggering voltage is also increased with the increase in L-FER’s number and the decrease in resistor’s value. The experimental investigation and model analysis of this work can be used to direct the design of GaN ESD clamp, and help to save a lot of manpower, material resources and time costs.

In this work, the influences of special environments (hydrogen gas and high temperature, high humidity environments) on the performance of three types of SiC MOSFETs are investigated. The results reveal several noteworthy observations. Firstly, after 500 h in a hydrogen gas environment, all the SiC MOSFETs exhibited a negative drift in threshold voltage, accompanied by an increase in maximum transconductance and drain current (@ VGS/VDS = 13 V/3 V). This phenomenon can be attributed to that the hydrogen atoms can increase the positive fixed charges in the oxide and increase the electron mobility in the channel. In addition, high temperature did not intensify the impact of hydrogen on the devices and electron mobility. Instead, prolonged exposure to high temperatures may induce stress on the SiO2/SiC interface, leading to a decrease in electron mobility, subsequently reducing the transconductance and drain current (@ VGS/VDS = 13 V/3 V). The high temperature, high humidity environment can cause a certain negative drift in the devices’ threshold voltage. With the increasing duration of the experiment, the maximum transconductance and drain current (@ VGS/VDS = 18V (20 V)/3 V) gradually decreased. This may be because the presence of moisture can lead to corrosion of the devices’ metal contacts and interconnects, which can increase the devices’ resistance and lead to a decrease in the devices’ maximum transconductance and drain current.

Abstract Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is widely used for atomic-level imaging of materials but severely requires damage-free and thin samples (lamellae). So far, the preparation of the high-quality lamella from a bulk largely depends on manual processes by a skilled operator. This limits the throughput and repeatability of aberration-corrected STEM experiments. Here, inspired by the recent successes of “robot scientists”, we demonstrate robotic fabrication of high-quality lamellae by focused-ion-beam (FIB) with automation software. First, we show that the robotic FIB can prepare lamellae with a high success rate, where the FIB system automatically controls rough-milling, lift-out, and final-thinning processes. Then, we systematically optimized the FIB parameters of the final-thinning process for single crystal Si. The optimized Si lamellae were evaluated by aberration-corrected STEM, showing atomic-level images with 55 pm resolution and quantitative repeatability of the spatial resolution and lamella thickness. We also demonstrate robotic fabrication of high-quality lamellae of SrTiO3 and sapphire, suggesting that the robotic FIB system may be applicable for a wide range of materials. The throughput of the robotic fabrication was typically an hour per lamella. Our robotic FIB will pave the way for the operator-free, high-throughput, and repeatable fabrication of the high-quality lamellae for aberration-corrected STEM.

BackgroundAcute pulmonary embolism (APE) is associated with peak incidence and mortality rate in winter. The present study sought to characterize the clinical and hemodynamic features of cold weather on APE patients.MethodsAll enrolled 224 APE patients underwent clinical and hemodynamic evaluation and baseline parameters were collected. Recruited patients were grouped by weather pattern on admission into cold and warm weather group. The correlation and prognostic values among cold weather and other variables were analyzed.ResultsCompared to warm weather group, patients in cold weather group present with more severe cardiac function, with adverse WHO-functional class (P = 0.032) and higher NT-proBNP concentration [1,853.0 (398.0, 5,237.0) pg/ml vs. 847.5 (56.8, 3,090.5) pg/ml, P = 0.001]. The cold weather group also displayed much critical hemodynamic status and heavier thrombosis load, with higher mPAP (29.1 ± 11.2mmHg vs. 25.6 ± 14.2mmHg, P = 0.045), higher PVR [3.3 (1.7, 6.0) wood units vs. 1.8 (0.9, 3.8) wood units, P < 0.001], higher Miller index (21.4 ± 5.9 vs. 19.1 ± 8.0, P = 0.024), and higher D-dimer levels [2,172.0 (854.5, 3,072.5) mg/L vs. 1,094.5 (210.5, 2,914.5) mg/L, P = 0.008]. Besides, cold weather showed well correlation with the above variables. Survival analysis showed APE patients in cold weather had significantly higher clinical worsening event rate (P = 0.010) and could be an independent predictor of adverse clinical outcome in the multivariate analysis (HR 2.629; 95% CI 1.127, 6.135; P = 0.025).ConclusionAPE patients in cold weather were associated with thrombus overload, cardiac dysfunction, hemodynamic collapse and higher clinical worsening event rate. Cold weather proves to be an independent predictor of adverse clinical outcome.

Activated sludge (AS) systems in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain high concentration of viruses. Here, the authors apply a systematic metagenomic pipeline and retrieve a catalogue of around 50,000 prokaryotic viruses from samples of six WWTPs, revealing a large and uncharacterized viral diversity in AS communities.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the resistance mechanism of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to cefoperazone sodium/sulbactam sodium. We retrospectively analyzed the drug resistance of P.a isolated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University. Drug-resistant P.a strains were constructed, then wild-type (WT) and drug-resistant (DR) strains were compared using protein and gene microarrays to determine differences between DR and WT strains. The resistance rates of P. aeruginosa during 2013, 2014 and 2015 were 21.2%, 21.4%, and 24.6% respectively. Among 242 protein peaks of WT and DR bacteriophage proteins, 41 were differentially expressed between the two groups. The expression of 26 and 15 proteins were respectively upregulated and downregulated in the DR compared with the WT group. Gene microarray results revealed 679 mutant loci in the DR group, of which 42 with the top 50 Q values were found in the NCBI database. The rate of P.a resistance to cefoperazone sodium/sulbactam sodium remained high between 2013 and 2015. The numbers of different proteins and genetic variations in the DR strains suggested that the resistance mechanism of P.a to cefoperazone sodium/sulbactam sodium involves multiple genes and proteins that might be key to controlling P.a resistance to cefoperazone sodium/sulbactam sodium.

Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus (PMME) is a rare gastrointestinal melanoma with a high rate of recurrence and metastasis. The standard of care for PMME has not been established yet due to a lack of understanding of its clinical and molecular pathogenesis. Thus, we performed genomic profiling on a recurrent PMME case to seek novel opportunities for the management of this rare disease. Between 2013 and 2016, 6 tissue samples including 3 from the primary tumors, 2 from the relapsed tumors, and 1 from a normal control were collected from a patient diagnosed with PMME and were subjected to whole-exome sequencing to track the dynamic genetic changes. Additionally, we also analyzed a cohort of 398 samples obtained from the TCGA skin cutanesous melanoma (TCGA-SKCM) dataset to assess the frequency and determine the clinical implications of genomic events found in the presented study. ARHGAP35 (p.L1022M) was the only mutation shared across temporal PMME lesions. The PMME samples showed higher levels of genetic instability and intra-tumor heterogeneity. They also shared several concordant copy number variations (CNV). All lesions were concordant with the evolution trajectory, and shrinkage of the founding clone caused the subclonal population to become dominant in PT1c, which was likely the reason behind metastatic seeding. ARHGAP35 mutations were found in 6% of the TCGA-SKCM cohort samples. The presence of the mutations was associated with poor progression-free survival (PFS) by both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Our study showed that the primary tumor clone disseminates earlier in PMME. This highlights the need to understand the mechanism involved in the early PMME recurrence to optimize treatment.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) represents a highly recurrent gastrointestinal disorder and global public health issue. However, it lacks effective and safe strategies for its control. Although Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has been suggested to exhibit preventive and therapeutic activity for the control of IBD, whether its activity is associated with its ability to modulate intestinal microbiota remains to be addressed. To investigate the effect of GBE on controlling IBD, a Citrobacter Rodentium (CR)-induced mouse colitis model was used, and then histopathological examinations, biochemical assays, immunohistochemistry, and immunoblotting were performed to detect histological changes, cytokines, and tight junction (TJ) proteins in the intestine samples. We also studied 16s rRNA to detect changes in intestinal microbiota and used GC-MS to determine the microbiota-related metabolites short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The results of our studies revealed that pre-treatment with GBE was sufficient for protecting the animals from CR-induced colitis. As a mechanism for GBE activity, GBE treatment was able to modulate the intestinal microbiota and increase the SCFAs capable of decreasing the pro-inflammatory factors and up-regulating the anti-inflammatory factors while elevating the intestinal-barrier-associated proteins to maintain the integrity of the intestines. Accordingly, our results led to a strong suggestion that GBE should be seriously considered in the preventive control of CR-induced colitis and in the development of effective and safe therapeutic strategies for controlling IBD.

Abstract Background Ethoxyquin (EQ) is a common antioxidant which is widely used in animal feed. But the supplement of EQ in animal feed may lead to the residues of EQ and its major oxidation products: ethoxyquin quinone imine (EQI) and ethoxyquin dimer (EQDM) in animal tissue. Thus, it would pose potential health hazards to consumers. However, the method for the simultaneous determination of EQ, EQI and EQDM in animal tissues is currently not available, and the accumulation extend of these chemicals in animal tissues after EQ administration remains to be evaluated. Results A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was successfully developed for the simultaneous determination of EQ, EQI and EQDM in swine tissues. The quantitative limits of EQ, EQI and EQDM can achieve to 0.5, 5.0 and 5.0 μg/kg in swine tissues, respectively. The spiked-recovery ratios of the three analytes (5–2000 μg/kg) were in the range of 64.7%–100.7% with relative standard deviations below 11.6%. Moreover, the utilization of this method for the analysis of actual swine tissue samples revealed that the application of commercial EQ additive in swine diet would produce the residues of all the three chemicals (EQ, EQI and EQDM) in fat, kidney, liver and muscle. Conclusions The assay accuracy and precision of this GC-MS/MS method can meet the requirement of quantitative analysis. Meanwhile, the safety of EQ as a feed additive should be seriously considered with regard to food safety concerns since the oxidation product of EQ may have potential carcinogenicity.

The degradation mechanisms for pMOSFETs from a 130 nm partially-depleted silicon on insulator (PDSOI) technology under the combined effects of total ionizing dose (TID) and negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) are investigated. The TID and NBTI related degradations show an opposite trend as gate oxide scaling, which implies the different traps are activated during irradiation and NBTI stress. The radiation-induced traps can affect the NBTI effect of pMOSFET, especially for the ON bias irradiation. The irradiated I/O pMOSFET shows a smaller threshold voltage shift than the un-irradiated device under the same NBTI stress at the early stress stage. It may be contributed to the enhanced Fowler-Nordheim electron injection during NBTI stressing after ON bias irradiation. But the irradiation also increases the time exponent $n$ from 0.11 to 0.13 for Core pMOSFETs and from 0.18 to 0.20 for I/O devices. It means that the NBTI degradations become worse after ON bias irradiation in a long time scale. This phenomenon is attributed to the change of trap characteristics caused by irradiation. As a result, the NBTI lifetime of Core device is reduced by nearly three orders of magnitude and the lifetime of I/O device is reduced by five times after ON bias irradiation at the rated operating voltage.

With the sustainable growth in the integration of distributed generation units in the distribution network, the probability of the fault current level exceeding the rating of existing components increases. Cascaded H bridge fault current limiter is widely used in the power grid due to its advantage in inhibiting surge current flexibly. In order to equilibrate the objective functions of its cost, fault current mitigation effect, and the weighted load reliability index, a novel methodology is proposed to simultaneously optimize the location and size of the limiters in the distribution network. Therein, the sensitivity factor considering the Monte Carlo fault simulation model is introduced to reduce the search space and rank candidate locations referencing the actual conditions. And then, according to the candidate locations and considering different conflicting objective functions, a multi-objective improved bat algorithm is employed to obtain the Pareto optimal solution set. Also, life cycle cost and net present value are introduced to construct an economic model to access the scheme costs and service life. The proposed approach is verified using the modified IEEE 33-bus distribution systems with DGs and IEEE 30-bus Benchmark system. The results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits higher efficiency in finding optimum solutions and provides a new economic configuration idea for the practical engineering application.

This work investigated the effects of single stress and electro-thermo-mechanical coupling stress on the electrical properties of top-cooled enhancement mode (E-mode) Aluminium Gallium Nitride/Gallium Nitride (AlGaN/GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) (GS66508T). Planar pressure, linear deformation, punctate deformation, environmental temperature, electro-thermal coupling, thermo-mechanical coupling, and electro-thermo-mechanical coupling stresses were applied to the device. It was found that different kinds of stress had different influence mechanisms on the device. Namely, excessive mechanical pressure/deformation stress caused serious, irrecoverable degradation of the device’s leakage current, with the gate leakage current (Ig) increasing by ~107 times and the drain-to-source leakage current (Idss) increasing by ~106 times after mechanical punctate deformation of 0.5 mm. The device characteristics were not restored after the mechanical stress was removed. Compared with three mechanical stresses, environmental thermal stress had a greater influence on the device’s transfer characteristic and on-resistance (Ron) but far less influence on Ig and Idss. As was expected, multiple stress coupled to the device promoted invalidation of the device. For more in-depth investigation, finite element simulation carried out with COMSOL was used to analyze the effect of electro-thermo-mechanical coupling stress on top-cooled E-mode AlGaN/GaN HEMT. The results of the experiments and simulation demonstrated that single and coupled stresses, especially mechanical stress coupled with other stresses, degraded the electrical properties or even caused irreversible damage to top-cooled E-mode AlGaN/GaN HEMT. Mechanical stress should be reduced as much as possible in the packaging design, transportation, storage, and application of top-cooled E-mode AlGaN/GaN HEMT.

Abstract Background Genome-centric approaches are widely used to investigate microbial compositions, dynamics, ecology, and interactions within various environmental systems. Hundreds or even thousands of genomes could be retrieved in a single study contributed by the cost-effective short-read sequencing and developed assembly/binning pipelines. However, conventional binning methods usually yield highly fragmented draft genomes that limit our ability to comprehensively understand these microbial communities. Thus, to leverage advantage of both the long and short reads to retrieve more complete genomes from environmental samples is a must-do task to move this direction forward. Results Here, we used an iterative hybrid assembly (IHA) approach to reconstruct 49 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), including 27 high-quality (HQ) and high-contiguity (HC) genomes with contig number ≤ 5, eight of which were circular finished genomes from a partial-nitritation anammox (PNA) reactor. These 49 recovered MAGs (43 MAGs encoding full-length rRNA, average N50 of 2.2 Mbp), represented the majority (92.3%) of the bacterial community. Moreover, the workflow retrieved HQ and HC MAGs even with an extremely low coverage (relative abundance < 0.1%). Among them, 34 MAGs could not be assigned to the genus level, indicating the novelty of the genomes retrieved using the IHA method proposed in this study. Comparative analysis of HQ MAG pairs reconstructed using two methods, i.e., hybrid and short reads only, revealed that identical genes in the MAG pairs represented 87.5% and 95.5% of the total gene inventory of hybrid and short reads only assembled MAGs, respectively. In addition, the first finished anammox genome of the genus Ca. Brocadia reconstructed revealed that there were two identical hydrazine synthase (hzs) genes, providing the exact gene copy number of this crucial phylomarker of anammox at the genome level. Conclusions Our results showcased the high-quality and high-contiguity genome retrieval performance and demonstrated the feasibility of complete genome reconstruction using the IHA workflow from the enrichment system. These (near-) complete genomes provided a high resolution of the microbial community, which might help to understand the bacterial repertoire of anammox-associated systems. Combined with other validation experiments, the workflow can enable a detailed view of the anammox or other similar enrichment systems. Video Abstract

MIS-HEMT is one of the most promising structures to prohibit the unfavorable gate leakage in conventional AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. However, the extra insulator layer introduces massive border traps at insulator/AlGaN interface and results in the poor reliability. In this brief the energy distribution of border traps in AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMT gate stack is extracted and investigated through a discharging-based trap energy profile technique. The technique adopts spot-Id sense measurement with 1 millisecond measurement time to capture the “whole (both fast and slow)” border traps. The results are beneficial to improve the reliability of AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMT.

The negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) mechanisms for Core and input/output (I/O) devices from a 130 nm partially-depleted silicon on insulator (PDSOI) technology are investigated. The I/O device degrades more than the Core device under the same stress electric field due to the different gate oxide processes in these two types of devices. Both the oxide trap charge and interface trap lead to the transfer characteristics degradations of the device after NBTI. While the near interfacial traps result in the increase of low frequency noise (LFN). The trap densities near the silicon/gate oxide interface introduced by stress are extracted using the LFN method. NBTI-induced gate current increase is observed for Core device, but not for I/O device. It is result from the enhanced tunneling process, which is induced by the increase of electric field in the gate oxide after charge trapping at or near the channel interface. The gate width and length dependences of NBTI are observed. The enhanced NBTI degradation observed in short channel and narrow channel device is result from the enhanced NBTI effect at channel edge regions. The larger hole concentration is a main cause of the more serious NBTI degradation at the channel edge regions, including the nearby region of STI sidewall along the channel width direction and the gate edge region along the channel length direction. This conclusion is also verified by the TCAD simulations.

Purpose – The General Society Survey(GSS) is a kind of government-funded survey which aims at examining the Socio-economic status, quality of life, and structure of contemporary society. GSS data set is regarded as one of the authoritative source for the government and organization practitioners to make data-driven policies. The previous analytic approaches for GSS data set are designed by combining expert knowledges and simple statistics. By utilizing the emerging data mining algorithms, we proposed a comprehensive data management and data mining approach for GSS data sets. Design/methodology/approach – The approach are designed to be operated in a two-phase manner: a data management phase which can improve the quality of GSS data by performing attribute pre-processing and filter-based attribute selection; a data mining phase which can extract hidden knowledge from the data set by performing data mining analysis including prediction analysis, classification analysis, association analysis and clustering analysis. Findings – According to experimental evaluation results, the paper have the following findings: Performing attribute selection on GSS data set can increase the performance of both classification analysis and clustering analysis; all the data mining analysis can effectively extract hidden knowledge from the GSS data set; the knowledge generated by different data mining analysis can somehow cross-validate each other. Originality/value – By leveraging the power of data mining techniques, the proposed approach can explore knowledge in a fine-grained manner with minimum human interference. Experiments on Chinese General Social Survey data set are conducted at the end to evaluate the performance of our approach.

Abstract Background Colistin (polymyxin E) is a kind of peptide antibiotic which has been approved in animal production for the purposes of disease prevention, treatment, and growth promotion. However, the wide use of colistin in animal feed may accelerate the spread of colistin-resistance gene MCR-1 from animal production to human beings, and its residue in animal-origin food may also pose serious health hazards to humans. Thus, it is necessary to develop corresponding analytical methods to monitor the addition of colistin in animal feed and the colistin residue in animal-origin food. Results A one-step enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (LFIA) for colistin were developed based on a newly developed monoclonal antibody. The ELISA showed a 50% inhibition value (IC50) of 9.7 ng/mL with assay time less than 60 min, while the LFIA had a strip reader-based detection limit of 0.87 ng/mL in phosphate buffer with assay time less than 15 min. For reducing the non-specific adsorption of colistin onto sample vial, the components of sample extraction solution were optimized and proved to greatly improve the assay accuracy. The spiked recovery experiment showed that the recoveries of colistin from feed, milk and meat samples were in the range of 77.83% to 113.38% with coefficient of variations less than 13% by ELISA analysis and less than 18% by LFIA analysis, respectively. Furthermore, actual sample analysis indicated that the two immunoassays can produce results consistent with instrumental analysis. Conclusions The developed assays can be used for rapid qualitative or quantitative detection of colistin in animal feed and food.

All of these participants and stakeholders have a shared goal, which is to gather information on the food production process so that they can make appropriate decisions to increase productivity and reduce risks. However, real-time data collection and analysis continue to be difficult tasks, particularly in developing nations, where agriculture is the primary source of income for the majority of the population. In this paper, we present a smart decision-support system for pig farming. Specifically, we first adopt rail-based unmanned vehicles to capture pigsty images. We then conduct image stitching to avoid double-counting pigs so that we can use image segmentation method to give precise masks for each pig. Based on the segmentation masks, the pig weights can be estimated, and data can be integrated in our developed mobile app. The proposed system enables the above participants and stakeholders to have real-time data and intelligent analysis reports to help their decision-making.

In this study, a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was established for the determination of zearalenone and its five derivatives in feed, including zearalanone, α-zearalanol, β-zearalanol, α-zearalenol, and β-zearalenol. An effective immunoaffinity column was prepared for sample purification, which was followed by the silane derivatization of the eluate after an immunoaffinity chromatography analysis for target compounds by GC-MS. Matrix effects were corrected by an isotope internal standard of zearalenone in this method. The six analytes had a good linear relationship in the range of 2–500 ng/mL, and the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.99. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were less than 1.5 μg/kg and 5.0 μg/kg, respectively. The average spike recoveries for the six feed matrices ranged from 89.6% to 112.3% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 12.6%. Twenty actual feed samples were analyzed using the established method, and at least one target was detected. The established GC-MS method was proven to be reliable and suitable for the determination of zearalenone and its derivatives in feed.

This study examined the brain activity elicited by the hemispheric asymmetries and morpheme transposition of two-character Chinese words (canonical and transposed word) and pseudowords using event-related potentials (ERPs) with a dual-target rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. Electrophysiological results showed facilitation effects for canonical words with centrally presented visual field (CVF) and right visual field (RVF) presentations but not with left visual field (LVF) presentations, as reflected by less negative N400 amplitudes. Moreover, more positive late positive component (LPC) amplitudes were observed for both canonical words and transposed words irrespective of the visual fields. More importantly, transposed words elicited a more negative N400 amplitude and a less positive LPC amplitude compared with the amplitudes elicited by canonical words for CVF and RVF presentations. For LVF presentations, transposed words elicited a less negative N250 amplitude compared with canonical words, and there was no significant difference between canonical words and transposed words in the N400 effect. Taken together, we concluded that character transposition facilitated the mapping of whole-word orthographic representation to semantic information in the LVF, as reflected by the N250 component, and such morpheme transposition influenced whole-word semantic processing in CVF and RVF presentations, as reflected by N400 and LPC components.

In this study, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for simultaneous determination of deoxynivalenol, aflatoxin B1, zearalenone, ochratoxin A, T-2 toxin and fumonisin B1 in feed and feedstuff was established. The sample was extracted with an acetonitrile–water mixture (60:40, v/v), purified by an immunoaffinity column, eluted with a methanol–acetic acid mixture (98:2, v/v), and reconstituted with a methanol–water mixture (50:50, v/v) after drying with nitrogen. Finally, the reconstituted solution was detected by LC-MS/MS and quantified by isotope internal standard method. The six mycotoxins had a good linear relationship in a certain concentration range, the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.99, the limits of detection were between 0.075 and 1.5 µg·kg−1, and the limits of quantification were between 0.5 and 5 µg·kg−1. The average spike recoveries in the four feed matrices ranged from 84.2% to 117.1% with relative standard deviations less than 11.6%. Thirty-six actual feed samples were analyzed for mycotoxins, and at least one mycotoxin was detected in each sample. The proposed method is reliable and suitable for detecting common mycotoxins in feed samples.

Bidirectional current-regulating ability is needed for AC light emitting diode (LED) drivers. In previous studies, various rectifier circuits have been used to provide constant bidirectional current. However, the usage of multiple electronic components can lead to additional costs and power consumption. In this work, a novel AlGaN/GaN lateral bidirectional current-regulating diode (B-CRD) featuring two symmetrical hybrid-trench electrodes is proposed and demonstrated by TCAD Sentaurus (California USA) from Synopsys corporation. Through shortly connecting the Ohmic contact and trench Schottky contact, the unidirectional invariant current can be obtained even with the applied voltage spanning a large range of 0–200 V. Furthermore, with the combination of two symmetrical hybrid-trench electrodes at each side of the device, the proposed B-CRD can deliver an excellent steady current in different directions. Through the TCAD simulation results, it was found that the device’s critical characteristics (namely knee voltage and current density) can be flexibly modulated by tailoring the depth and length of the trench Schottky contact. Meanwhile, it was also demonstrated through the device/circuit mixed-mode simulation that the proposed B-CRD can respond to the change in voltage in a few nanoseconds. Such a new functionality combined with excellent performance may make the proposed B-CRD attractive in some special fields where the bidirectional current-limiting function is needed.

Abstract Background The metabolic capacities of anammox bacteria and associated microbial community interactions in partial-nitritation anammox (PNA) reactors have received considerable attention for their crucial roles in energy-efficient nitrogen removal from wastewater. However, a comprehensive understanding of how abiotic and biotic factors shape bacterial community assembly in PNA reactors is not well reported. Results Here, we used integrated multi-omics (i.e., high-throughput 16S rRNA gene, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and metaproteomic sequencing) to reveal how abiotic and biotic factors shape the bacterial community assembly in a lab-scale one-stage PNA reactor treating synthetic wastewater. Analysis results of amplicon sequences (16S rRNA gene) from a time-series revealed distinct relative abundance patterns of the key autotrophic bacteria, i.e., anammox bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and the associated heterotrophic populations in the seed sludge and the sludge at the new stable state after deterioration. Using shotgun metagenomic sequences of anammox sludge, we recovered 58 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), including 3 MAGs of anammox bacteria and 3 MAGs of AOB. The integrated metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and metaproteomic data revealed that nitrogen metabolism is the most active process in the studied PNA reactor. The abundant heterotrophs contribute to the reduction of nitrate to nitrite/ammonium for autotrophic bacteria (anammox bacteria and AOB). Genomic and transcriptomic data revealed that the preference for electron donors of the dominant heterotrophs in different bacterial assemblages (seed and new stable state) varied along with the shift in anammox bacteria that have different metabolic features in terms of EPS composition. Notably, the most abundant heterotrophic bacteria in the reactor were more auxotrophic than the less abundant heterotrophs, regarding the syntheses of amino acids and vitamins. In addition, one of the abundant bacteria observed in the bacterial community exhibited highly transcribed secretion systems (type VI). Conclusions These findings provide the first insight that the bacterial communities in the PNA reactor are defined by not only abiotic factors (operating mode) but also metabolic interactions, such as nitrogen metabolism, exchange of electron donors, and auxotrophies.

This paper proposes a novel control algorithm to enhance the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of a photovoltaic (PV) system. In this method, the overcurrent of the grid-tied inverter is suppressed to a preset value using model current predictive control (MCPC) algorithm, and its DC-link overvoltage is removed using a non-maximum power point tracker (non-MPPT) algorithm. Therefore, the inverter overcurrent and its DC-link overvoltage problems can be placed under decoupling control using a DC/AC converter controller and DC/DC converter controller, respectively. Using eight switching modes for the three-phase inverter, the MCPC of DC/AC converter controller establishes a value function between the current reference value and output current value. Then, by introducing the switching mode (corresponding to the minimum value function) into the DC/AC converter controller, if the current reference is set at the rated value, the inverter's output current can be inhibited to the rated value under fault conditions. Moreover, a balanced three-phase rated current can always be obtained under either a symmetric or asymmetric fault. However, together with the MCPC, a DC-link overvoltage will appear. To remove this DC-link overvoltage quickly, based on the grid system voltage sag level, the non-MPPT algorithm is used to calculate the adjusted power for PV arrays. Then, based on the calculated power, the amended duty cycle can be obtained and immediately introduced into the DC/DC converter controller to tune the PV arrays' output power, which significantly decreases the power imbalance between the inverter's AC and DC sides, thus inhibiting the DC-link overvoltage. In addition, to inhibit DC-link voltage fluctuations further, DC-link voltage feedforward compensation is introduced into the DC/DC converter controller. In particular, under an asymmetric fault condition, with the help of the voltage feedforward compensation, the second harmonic frequency components of the DC-link voltage can also be removed. Finally, based on the theoretical derivation and simulation results, it can be proved that the major problems troubling a PV system's FRT technologies can be resolved by the proposed method, especially the problem related to the harmonic components of the DC-link voltage.

Purpose - The disability datasets are the datasets that contain the information of disabled populations. By analyzing these datasets, professionals who work with disabled populations can have a better understanding of the inherent characteristics of the disabled populations, so that working plans and policies, which can effectively help the disabled populations, can be made accordingly. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, the authors proposed a big data management and analytic approach for disability datasets. Findings - By using a set of data mining algorithms, the proposed approach can provide the following services. The data management scheme in the approach can improve the quality of disability data by estimating miss attribute values and detecting anomaly and low-quality data instances. The data mining scheme in the approach can explore useful patterns which reflect the correlation, association and interactional between the disability data attributes. Experiments based on real-world dataset are conducted at the end to prove the effectiveness of the approach. Originality/value - The proposed approach can enable data-driven decision-making for professionals who work with disabled populations.

Purpose - With the development of machine learning techniques, the artificial intelligence systems such as crowd networks are becoming more autonomous and smart. Therefore, there is a growing demand for developing a universal intelligence measurement so that the intelligence of artificial intelligence systems can be evaluated. This paper aims to propose a more formalized and accurate machine intelligence measurement method. Design/methodology/approach - This paper proposes a quality–time–complexity universal intelligence measurement method to measure the intelligence of agents. Findings - By observing the interaction process between the agent and the environment, we abstract three major factors for intelligence measure as quality, time and complexity of environment. Originality/value - This paper proposes a calculable universal intelligent measure method through considering more than two factors and the correlations between factors which are involved in an intelligent measurement.

This work proposes a novel AlGaN/GaN transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode (B-TVS-D) with bidirectional clamp capability, which consists of a small-size AlGaN/GaN monolithic bidirectional switch, two 2DEG-based current-limiting resistors (R1A/R1C, in parallel connection between the gate electrodes and the neighboring ohmic-contact electrodes (anode/cathode)), and a 2DEG-based proportional amplification resistor (R2, in parallel connection between two gate electrodes). It is demonstrated that the proposed B-TVS-D possesses a symmetrical triggering voltage (Vtrig) and a high secondary breakdown current (Is, over 8 A, corresponding to 12 kV human body model failure voltage) in different directional electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. The proposed diode can effectively enhance the electrostatic discharge robustness for the GaN-based power system. It is also verified that R1A/R1C and R2 have an important impact on Vtrig of the proposed B-TVS-D. Both the decrease in R2 and increase in R1A/R1C can lead to the decrease of Vtrig. In addition, the proposed B-TVS-D can be fabricated on the conventional p-GaN HEMT platform, making the ESD design of the GaN-based power system more convenient.

Despite the superior working properties, GaN-based HEMTs and systems are still confronted with the threat of a transient ESD event, especially for the vulnerable gate structure of the p-GaN or MOS HEMTs. Therefore, there is still an urgent need for a bidirectional ESD protection diode to improve the ESD robustness of a GaN power system. In this study, an AlGaN/GaN ESD protection diode with bidirectional clamp capability was proposed and investigated. Through the combination of two floating gate electrodes and two pF-grade capacitors connected in parallel between anode or cathode electrodes and the adjacent floating gate electrodes (CGA (CGC)), the proposed diode could be triggered by a required voltage and possesses a high secondary breakdown current (IS) in both forward and reverse transient ESD events. Based on the experimental verification, it was found that the bidirectional triggering voltages (Vtrig) and IS of the proposed diode were strongly related to CGA (CGC). With CGA (CGC) increasing from 5 pF to 25 pF, Vtrig and IS decreased from ~18 V to ~7 V and from ~7 A to ~3 A, respectively. The diode’s high performance demonstrated a good reference for the ESD design of a GaN power system.
