1. Semi-Supervised and Class-Imbalanced Open Set Medical Image Recognition

Abstract: Open set recognition (OSR) for medical images is vital to ensure practical safeguards in clinical applications. It demands establishing model awareness of rare and unknown conditions, rejecting what the model does not know, and thus preventing these conditions from being dangerously misclassified into any false known classes. Meanwhile, it often further requires training the OSR model based on a mixture of severely class-imbalanced and partially labeled data due to the prevalence of long-tailed data distribution and the massive cost of medical image annotations. Unfortunately, most existing OSR methods perform poorly under such complex conditions, largely because they neglect to thoroughly exploit the knowledge from the imbalanced and unlabeled data to help better distinguish the known and unknown lesion patterns. This paper proposes a novel Semi-supervised and Class-Imbalanced Open Set medical image Recognition (SCI-OSR) algorithm as a joint solution to address these issues. The major contributions are as follows. Firstly, we propose a modified open mixup approach boasting selective fine-grained lesion foreground fusion based on the learned weighted attentive masks to augment the unlabeled, small-sized, and even pseudo-unknown class data, where the generated attentive masks serve as effective candidate lesion area estimators. Secondly, our approach can more effectively extract the disentangled and discriminative feature representations based on our tailored consistency and contrastive losses, which helps more properly exploit the augmented data and aids in pushing the learned features of known and unknown classes to be well separated by large margins. Finally, a prototype-based open set classifier is established based on the extracted discriminative features of the original and augmented data. It favors producing equally low confidence scores over all non-positive classes and thus more reliably rejects the unknown query data. Through comparative experiments and ablation studies conducted on several popular medical benchmarks, we demonstrate that our proposed SCI-OSR can successfully boost OSR performances, leading to improved known class classification and unknown class rejection over other state-of-the-art methods.

2. Tocilizumab attenuates choroidal neovascularization by regulating macrophage polarization through the IL-6R/STAT3/VEGF pathway

Abstract: Globally, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment. Up to 80% of severe vision loss is caused by AMD, which is characterized by the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Uncertainty exists regarding the precise pathophysiological mechanisms of CNV. It has been suggested that the interleukin (IL) IL-6/IL-6R signaling pathway is crucial in the progression of CNV. Tocilizumab (TCZ), a monoclonal antibody, binds to soluble and membrane-bound IL-6R and competitively inhibits IL-6 downstream signaling. Previous research has demonstrated that TCZ promotes several roles related to inflammation and neovascularization. However, the effects of TCZ on CNV and the underlying mechanism are still unknown. This study found that TCZ administration decreased the area and leakage of CNV lesions in the mice model of laser-induced CNV. Additionally, results demonstrated that TCZ promotes the expression of iNOS, CCL-3, CCL-5, TNF-α and inhibits the expression of Arg-1, IL-10, YM-1 and CD206. Furthermore, TCZ treatment inhibited the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) STAT3/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway, which was activated after CNV formation. Colivelin, a STAT3 agonist, reversed the inhibitory effects of TCZ on CNV formation and macrophage polarization. In a mouse model of laser-induced CNV, our findings demonstrated that TCZ attenuated CNV formation and inhibited the leakage of CNV lesions by regulating macrophage polarization via inhibiting the STAT3/VEGF axis. TCZ is the potential therapeutic strategy for CNV.

Abstract: Exhaled ammonia (NH3) is an essential noninvasive biomarker for disease diagnosis. In this study, an acetone-modifier positive photoionization ion mobility spectrometry (AM-PIMS) method was developed for accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of exhaled NH3 with high selectivity and sensitivity. Acetone was introduced into the drift tube along with the drift gas as a modifier, and the characteristic NH3 product ion peak of (C3H6O)4NH4+ (K0 = 1.45 cm2/V·s) was obtained through the ion-molecule reaction with acetone reactant ions (C3H6O)2H+ (K0 = 1.87 cm2/V·s), which significantly increased the peak-to-peak resolution and improved the accuracy of exhaled NH3 qualitative identification. Moreover, the interference of high humidity and the memory effect of NH3 molecules were significantly reduced via online dilution and purging sampling, thus realizing breath-by-breath measurement. As a result, a wide quantitative range of 5.87–140.92 μmol/L with a response time of 40 ms was achieved, and the exhaled NH3 profile could be synchronized with the concentration curve of exhaled CO2. Finally, the analytical capacity of AM-PIMS was demonstrated by measuring the exhaled NH3 of healthy subjects, demonstrating its great potential for clinical disease diagnosis.

Abstract: The pandemic has made wearing masks commonplace, prompting researchers to investigate their effects on interpersonal perception. Findings indicate masks obstruct face identification and expression recognition, with lower face cues being most affected. When judging attractiveness, masks can enhance the appeal of less attractive faces, but reduce the appeal of more attractive faces. Trust and speech perception outcomes are inconclusive. Future studies could focus on individual differences in how masks influence our perception of others.

5. Role of ferroptosis-related genes in coronary atherosclerosis and identification of key genes: integration of bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation

Abstract: Abstract Background Coronary atherosclerosis (CA) is the most common type of atherosclerosis. However, the inherent pathogenesis and mechanisms of CA are unclear, and the relationship with ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to use bioinformatics techniques to evaluate potential therapeutic targets for CA.Please provide the given name for author “Dingshun”.Please provide the given name for author “Dingshun”. Methods First, the GSE132651 dataset was acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis, and Protein–Protein interaction network were successively conducted. Next, overlapping genes between hub genes and CA genes were found. FRGs were found when comparing the CA group with the normal group. The correlation between overlapping genes and FRGs was further analyzed. At last, we performed Elisa to validate the expression of these genes in human blood specimens. Mice aortic tissues were used for western blot to detect the expression of proteins. Results Based on the GSE132651 dataset, 102 differentially expressed genes were identified. Five overlapping genes between hub genes and CA genes were found (CCNA2, RRM2, PBK, PCNA, CDK1). TFRC and GPX4 were found to be FRGs. TFRC was positively correlated with CCNA2, PBK, PCNA, CDK1, RRM2, with CDK1 being the strongest correlation. GPX4 was negatively correlated with these genes, among which CCNA2 was the strongest correlation. The ELISA results showed that CCNA2, CDK1, and TFRC expression were markedly increased in serum of the CA samples compared with controls, while GPX4 expression was markedly decreased in the CA samples. The western blot results show that GPX4 expression was lower in the model group, TFRC, CDK1, and CCNA2 protein expression were high in the model group. Conclusions Ferroptosis-related genes GPX4 and TFRC were closely correlated with the identified overlapping genes CCNA2 and CDK1, which may serve as targeted therapies for the treatment of CA.

6. Novel Endophytic Pseudescherichia sp. GSE25 Strain Significantly Controls Fusarium graminearum and Reduces Deoxynivalenol in Wheat

Abstract: Fusarium heading blight (FHB) is a devastating disease in wheat, primarily caused by field invasion of Fusarium graminearum. Due to the scarcity of resistant wheat varieties, the agricultural sector resorts to chemical fungicides to control FHB incidence. On the other hand, biocontrol represents a promising, eco-friendly approach aligned with sustainable and green agriculture concepts. In the present study, a bacterial endophyte, Pseudescherichia sp. (GSE25), was isolated from wheat seeds and identified through complete genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. In vitro testing of this endophytic strain demonstrated strong antifungal activity against F. graminearum PH-1 by inhibiting spore germination, suppressing germ tube growth, and causing cell membrane damage. Under field conditions, the strain GSE25 significantly reduced the FHB incidence and the associated deoxynivalenol mycotoxin accumulation by over 60% and 80%, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of the isolated bacterial endophyte Pseudescherichia sp. GSE25 strain as a biocontrol agent in protecting wheat from FHB-caused F. graminearum. This is the first report showing a biocontrol effect of Pseudescherichia sp. a strain against phytopathogens.

7. Identification of 'Bathed' Chinese Mitten Crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) Using Geometric Morphological Analysis of the Carapace

Abstract: To confirm whether Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis), commonly known as hairy crabs or river crabs, in non-Yangcheng Lake areas undergo morphological convergence with the original crabs in the Yangcheng Lake purse seine and high-standard modified aquaculture ponds after being “introduced” or “bathed”-cultured, we employed a geometric morphometrics approach. This approach allowed us to compare and analyze the dynamic changes in the carapace morphology of both the original and “introduced” crabs in Yangcheng Lake and high-standard ponds in Kunshan City at 0, 7, 14, and 30 days after “bathing” culture. The geometric morphological analysis of the carapace was conducted using a system of 35 established landmarks. The stepwise discriminant analysis of the relative distortion score revealed morphological differences between “introduced” and resident original crabs in the Yangcheng Lake area and in high-standard modified ponds after 7, 14, and 30 days of bathing culture. The accuracy of the discriminant analysis was 100%. The results of the geometric morphological visualization demonstrated that the carapaces of the bathed crabs underwent adaptive changes in the water. However, even after one month of bathing culture, the “introduced” crabs in lakes and ponds could not reach the morphological characteristics of the original crabs, i.e., their carapaces did not exhibit the characteristics of the original crabs.

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in environmental perception, reasoning-based decision-making, and simulating complex human behaviors, particularly in interactive role-playing contexts. This paper introduces the Multiverse Interactive Role-play Ability General Evaluation (MIRAGE), a comprehensive framework designed to assess LLMs' proficiency in portraying advanced human behaviors through murder mystery games. MIRAGE features eight intricately crafted scripts encompassing diverse themes and styles, providing a rich simulation. To evaluate LLMs' performance, MIRAGE employs four distinct methods: the Trust Inclination Index (TII) to measure dynamics of trust and suspicion, the Clue Investigation Capability (CIC) to measure LLMs' capability of conducting information, the Interactivity Capability Index (ICI) to assess role-playing capabilities and the Script Compliance Index (SCI) to assess LLMs' capability of understanding and following instructions. Our experiments indicate that even popular models like GPT-4 face significant challenges in navigating the complexities presented by the MIRAGE. 9. Piezoelectric Potential in Single-Crystalline ZnO Nanohelices Based on Finite Element Analysis

Abstract: Electric potential produced in deformed piezoelectric nanostructures is of significance for both fundamental study and practical applications. To reveal the piezoelectric property of ZnO nanohelices, the piezoelectric potential in single-crystal nanohelices was simulated by finite element method calculations. For a nanohelix with a length of 1200 nm, a mean coil radius of 150 nm, five active coils, and a hexagonal coiled wire with a side length 100 nm, a compressing force of 100 nN results in a potential of 1.85 V. This potential is significantly higher than the potential produced in a straight nanowire with the same length and applied force. Maintaining the length and increasing the number of coils or mean coil radius leads to higher piezoelectric potential in the nanohelix. Appling a force along the axial direction produces higher piezoelectric potential than in other directions. Adding lateral forces to an existing axial force can change the piezoelectric potential distribution in the nanohelix, while the maximum piezoelectric potential remains largely unchanged in some cases. This research demonstrates the promising potential of ZnO nanohelices for applications in sensors, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) devices, nanorobotics, and energy sciences.

18. A Network Pharmacology Study to Explore the Underlying Mechanism of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in the Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease

Abstract: Background: Safflower has long been used to treat coronary heart disease (CHD). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The goal of this study was to predict the therapeutic effect of safflower against CHD using a network pharmacology, and to explore the underlying pharmacological mechanisms in vitro.Methods: Firstly, we obtained relative compounds of safflower based on the TCMSP database. The TCMSP and PubChem databases were used to predict targets of these active compounds. Then we built CHD target database by DisGeNET database. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network graph of overlapping genes was obtained after supplying the common targets of safflower and CHD into the STRING database. The PPI network was then used to determine the top ten most significant hub genes. Furthermore, DAVID database was utilized for the enrichment analysis on Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). To validate these results, a cell model of CHD was established in EAhy926 cells using oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). Results: Safflower was determined to have 189 active compounds. The TCMSP and PubChem databases were used to predict 573 targets of these active compounds. The DisGeNET database was used to identify 1576 genes involved in the progression of CHD. The top ten hub genes were ALB, IL6, IL1B, VEGFA, STAT3, MMP9, TLR4, CCL2, CXCL8, and IL10. GO functional enrichment analysis yielded 92 entries for biological process (BP), 47 entries for cellular component (CC), 31 entries for molecular function (MF), and 20 signaling pathways were obtained from KEGG pathway enrichment screening. Based on these findings, the FoxO signaling pathway is critical in the treatment of CHD by safflower. The vitro Results showed that safflower had an ameliorating effect on ox-LDL induced apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential. Western blotting results showed that compared to the model group, safflower decreased Bax expression and acetylation of FoxO1 proteins while increasing the expression of Bcl-2 and SIRT1 proteins. Conclusions: Safflower targets multiple pathways during CHD treatment, and can exert anti-apoptotic effects by regulating the expression of BAX, BCL-2, and SIRT1/FoxO1 signaling pathway-related proteins.

Abstract: The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract: Continued improvements on existing reconstruction methods are vital to the success of high-energy physics experiments, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In IceCube, further challenges arise as the detector is situated at the geographic South Pole where computational resources are limited. However, to perform real-time analyses and to issue alerts to telescopes around the world, powerful and fast reconstruction methods are desired. Deep neural networks can be extremely powerful, and their usage is computationally inexpensive once the networks are trained. These characteristics make a deep learning-based approach an excellent candidate for the application in IceCube. A reconstruction method based on convolutional architectures and hexagonally shaped kernels is presented. The presented method is robust towards systematic uncertainties in the simulation and has been tested on experimental data. In comparison to standard reconstruction methods in IceCube, it can improve upon the reconstruction accuracy, while reducing the time necessary to run the reconstruction by two to three orders of magnitude., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Journal of Instrumentation; added references

Abstract: When droplets touch surface, they may cause different wetting states--Cassie state or Wenzel state, depending on the structure and texture of the surface, the size of the droplet, etc. And the wetting transition from Cassie to Wenzel state has been studied by lots of scientists for its high value in the superhydrophobic field. This work focuses on the mechanism of the wetting transition. It analyses the stress condition of the gas-liquid interface, providing a theoretical result of the wetting transition. The results show that there are four forces acting on the interface during the wetting transition and in the depinning process only one of which changes with time and the other remains unchanged. Moreover, this work provides the speculation of the possible cause of meniscus collapse (touch-down) with an asymmetric configuration. Since wetting transition occurs at the nanoscale, it might be influenced by the potential field, resulting in symmetry breaking which leads to asymmetric representation. Although this work is just a theoretical analysis, it provides a different perspective to the study of wetting transition and we anticipate this assay could offer reference to the research in the superhydrophobic field.

Abstract: Physical review letters 125(14), 141801 (1-11) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.125.141801, The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100 eV$^2$. The best-fit point is found to be at sin$^2$($2θ_{24}$)=0.10 and $Δm_{41}^2$=4.5 eV$^2$, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a $p$ value of 8.0%., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract: The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to $\gamma$-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the universe. However, at PeV (10$^{15}$ eV) energies and above, most of the universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the universe. In this white paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: 1) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies; 2) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations; 3) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the universe; 4) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos. IceCube-Gen2 will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. Furthermore, through the addition of a radio array, IceCube-Gen2 will extend the energy range by several orders of magnitude compared to IceCube. Construction will take 8 years and cost about \$350M. The goal is to have IceCube-Gen2 fully operational by 2033. IceCube-Gen2 will play an essential role in shaping the new era of multi-messenger astronomy, fundamentally advancing our knowledge of the high-energy universe. This challenging mission can be fully addressed only in concert with the new survey instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum and gravitational wave detectors which will be available in the coming years., Comment: 56 pages, 29 figures

Abstract: Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are the main gamma-ray emitters in the Galactic plane. They are diffuse nebulae that emit nonthermal radiation. Pulsar winds, relativistic magnetized outflows from the central star, shocked in the ambient medium produce a multiwavelength emission from the radio through gamma-rays. Although the leptonic scenario is able to explain most PWNe emission, a hadronic contribution cannot be excluded. A possible hadronic contribution to the high-energy gamma-ray emission inevitably leads to the production of neutrinos. Using 9.5 yr of all-sky IceCube data, we report results from a stacking analysis to search for neutrino emission from 35 PWNe that are high-energy gamma-ray emitters. In the absence of any significant correlation, we set upper limits on the total neutrino emission from those PWNe and constraints on hadronic spectral components., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: We present a high-energy neutrino event generator, called LeptonInjector, alongside an event weighter, called LeptonWeighter. Both are designed for large-volume Cherenkov neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. The neutrino event generator allows for quick and flexible simulation of neutrino events within and around the detector volume, and implements the leading Standard Model neutrino interaction processes relevant for neutrino observatories: neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and neutrino-electron annihilation. Abstract: High-energy neutrinos are unique messengers of the high-energy universe, tracing the processes of cosmic ray acceleration. This paper presents analyses focusing on time-dependent neutrino point-source searches. A scan of the whole sky, making no prior assumption about source candidates, is performed, looking for a space and time clustering of high-energy neutrinos in data collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory between 2012 and 2017. No statistically significant evidence for a time-dependent neutrino signal is found with this search during this period, as all results are consistent with the background expectation. Within this study period, the blazar 3C 279, showed strong variability, inducing a very prominent gamma-ray flare observed in 2015 June. This event motivated a dedicated study of the blazar, which consists of searching for a time-dependent neutrino signal correlated with the gamma-ray emission. No evidence for a time-dependent signal is found. Hence, an upper limit on the neutrino fluence is derived, allowing us to constrain a hadronic emission model.

Abstract: Many Galactic sources of gamma rays, such as supernova remnants, are expected to produce neutrinos with a typical energy cutoff well below 100 TeV. For the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole, the southern sky, containing the inner part of the Galactic plane and the Galactic Center, is a particularly challenging region at these energies, because of the large background of atmospheric muons. In this paper, we present recent advancements in data selection strategies for track-like muon neutrino events with energies below 100 TeV from the southern sky. The strategies utilize the outer detector regions as veto and features of the signal pattern to reduce the background of atmospheric muons to a level which, for the first time, allows IceCube searching for point-like sources of neutrinos in the southern sky at energies between 100 GeV and several TeV in the muon neutrino charged current channel. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background expectation was observed in four years of data recorded with the completed IceCube detector. Upper limits on the neutrino flux for a number of spectral hypotheses are reported for a list of astrophysical objects in the southern hemisphere., 19 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: Physical review letters 124(5), 051103 (1-9) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.124.051103, This paper presents the results from point-like neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a point-like source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above $\sim1\,$TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the Northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of $2.9\,\sigma$ after accounting for statistical trials. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the Northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3$\,\sigma$ significance. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the ten years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract: The core mission of the IceCube neutrino observatory is to study the origin and propagation of cosmic rays. IceCube, with its surface component IceTop, observes multiple signatures to accomplish this mission. Most important are the astrophysical neutrinos that are produced in interactions of cosmic rays, close to their sources and in interstellar space. IceCube is the first instrument that measures the properties of this astrophysical neutrino flux and constrains its origin. In addition, the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of the local cosmic-ray flux are obtained from measurements of atmospheric muons and showers. Abstract: We present a novel analysis method for the determination of the neutrino-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) cross section in the TeV - PeV energy range utilizing neutrino absorption by the Earth. We analyze five years of data collected with the complete IceCube detector from May 2011 to May 2016. This analysis focuses on electromagnetic and hadronic showers (cascades) mainly induced by electron and tau neutrinos. The applied event selection features high background rejection (< 10% background contamination below 60 TeV, background free above 60 TeV) of atmospheric muons and high signal efficiency (~ 80%). The final neutrino sample consists of 4808 events, with 402 events above 10 TeV reconstructed energy. An unfolding method was applied to enable the mapping from reconstructed cascade parameters such as energy and zenith to true neutrino variables. The analysis was performed assuming isotropic astrophysical neutrino flux, in seven energy bins, and in two zenith bins ("down-going" from the south-hemisphere and "up-going" from the north-hemisphere). The ratio of down-going to up-going events (which are absorbed by the Earth at high energies) is sensitive to the neutrino-nucleon cross section but insensitive to the astrophysical neutrino flux uncertainties., Talk presented at DIS2018, Kobe, 16-20 April 2018; 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We present a measurement of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters using three years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The DeepCore infill array in the center of IceCube enables the detection and reconstruction of neutrinos produced by the interaction of cosmic rays in Earth's atmosphere at energies as low as ∼5 GeV. That energy threshold permits measurements of muon neutrino disappearance, over a range of baselines up to the diameter of the Earth, probing the same range of L/Eν as long-baseline experiments but with substantially higher-energy neutrinos. This analysis uses neutrinos from the full sky with reconstructed energies from 5.6 to 56 GeV. We measure Δm322=2.31-0.13+0.11×10-3 eV2 and sin2θ23=0.51-0.09+0.07, assuming normal neutrino mass ordering. Abstract: Recently network slicing has been identified as a promising network architectural technology for the next generation mobile cellular networks (5G) to address the challenges stemming from a wide range of applications. Especially, for machine type communication (MTC) application, it is widely recognized that traditional cellular network architecture is not adequate to meet the requirements in terms of massive connectivity and low latency. For exploiting network slicing, data aggregation (DA) can be adopted to effectively address the massive connectivity and latency requirement. In this paper, we propose an efficient network slicing data aggregation (NSDA) scheme for MTC applications. Different from conventional DA scheme where data aggregation is performed based on device locations, we perform DA according to latency requirement for MTC devices (MTCDs), with aim to exploit the benefits of network slicing and thus improve network access capacity and decrease access latency. We formulate the DA problem as a 0–1 Linear Programming and propose an efficient two-step algorithm to aggregate the MTC data for accessing a specific network slice. We examine the performance of our proposed NSDA in typical MTC scenarios via simulations. Numerical results reveal that NSDA significantly outperforms traditional MTC access schemes (without network slicing) in terms of network capacity, access congestion degree, latency, etc.

Abstract: In contrast to conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, precoding in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO is envisioned to achieve considerable capacity improvement, but at the cost of highly hardware complexity. As a cost-effective alternative, hybrid digital-analog beamforming has drawn considerable attention. In most conventional theoretical researches, ignoring practical implementation, perfect channel state information (CSI) is always assumed. However, whether FDD or TDD, in hybrid beamforming architecture, it is extremely challenging for base station (BS) to obtain perfect CSI. In this paper, based on the channel reciprocity in TDD systems, we propose a novel hybrid digital-analog beamforming algorithm with uplink training to maximize the capacity performance. Owing to uplink training, the requirement of CSI at eNodeB to conduct hybrid beamforming is graciously avoided. With practical RF hardware and unit modulus constraints, the proposed scheme provides useful low-complexity solutions in practical hybrid beam-forming system designs. Simulation results validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme compared with some existing hybrid beamforming schemes.)

40. High Energy Astrophysical Neutrino Flux Measurement Using Neutrino-induced Cascades Observed in 4 Years of IceCube Data

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the diffuse flux of high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos from the entire sky with energies of ${\rm O}(1\,{\rm{TeV}})$ and above. We have analyzed four years of IceCube data recorded from 2012-2015 focusing on neutrino-induced particle showers. These cascades stem predominantly from electron and tau neutrino interactions, provide good deposited energy resolution and have a lower rate of atmospheric production than muon neutrinos. A new event selection has been developed combining traditional straight cuts with gradient boosted multi-class decision trees to isolate cascades more efficiently, resulting in the largest cascade sample obtained by IceCube to date. The observed astrophysical component dominates at energies above $20\,\rm{TeV}$ and is well described by a single, unbroken power-law. The preliminary fit result is a spectral index of $\gamma=2.48\pm0.08$ with a per-flavor normalization at $100\,TeV$ of $\phi=\left(1.57^{+0.23}_{-0.22}\right)\cdot10^{-18}\,GeV^{-1}s^{-1}sr^{-1}cm^{-2}$ in agreement with previous IceCube measurements. We investigated the possibility of a spectral hardening at the upper end of the spectrum by allowing a second power-law component to enter our flux model. No evidence for such hardening has been found. In the near future we expect improved results by adding IceCube's existing cascades from the preceding two years (2010-2011) into this analysis thereby enlarging the total live time to six years.

Abstract: Physical review / D 95(11), 112002(2017). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.95.112002, We present a search for a light sterile neutrino using three years of atmospheric neutrino data from the DeepCore detector in the energy range of approximately 10–60 GeV. DeepCore is the low-energy subarray of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The standard three-neutrino paradigm can be probed by adding an additional light (Δm$^{2}_{41}$ ∼ 1 eV2) sterile neutrino. Sterile neutrinos do not interact through the standard weak interaction and, therefore, cannot be directly detected. However, their mixing with the three active neutrino states leaves an imprint on the standard atmospheric neutrino oscillations for energies below 100 GeV. A search for such mixing via muon neutrino disappearance is presented here. The data are found to be consistent with the standard three-neutrino hypothesis. Abstract: Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. The data can then be used to constrain the cosmic ray primary flux and the contribution to atmospheric lepton fluxes from prompt decays of short-lived hadrons. In this paper, techniques for the extraction of physical measurements from atmospheric muon events are described and first results are presented. The multiplicity spectrum of TeV muons in cosmic ray air showers for primaries in the energy range from the knee to the ankle is derived and found to be consistent with recent results from surface detectors. The single muon energy spectrum is determined up to PeV energies and shows a clear indication for the emergence of a distinct spectral component from prompt decays of short-lived hadrons. The magnitude of the prompt flux, which should include a substantial contribution from light vector meson di-muon decays, is consistent with current theoretical predictions. The variety of measurements and high event statistics can also be exploited for the evaluation of systematic effects. In the course of this study, internal inconsistencies in the zenith angle distribution of events were found which indicate the presence of an unexplained effect outside the currently applied range of detector systematics. 43. Evaluation of unsteadiness in effervescent sprays by analysis of droplet arrival statistics – The influence of fluids properties and atomizer internal design

Abstract: The ideal spray theory of Edwards and Marx was used to investigate the dependence of effervescent spray unsteadiness on fluid properties and atomizer internal design. Results demonstrate that fluid properties and internal design of atomizer directly affect the two-phase flow pattern inside the atomizer which consequently affects the spray unsteadiness of the atomizer. Water sprays are more unsteady when the air to liquid ratio ( ALR ) increases, whereas, more unsteady is observed for using glycerol/water mixture (high-viscosity Newtonian fluid) or glycerol/water/xanthan (non-Newtonian fluid) mixture as ALR reduces. In addition, sprays using low-viscosity or strong non-Newtonian fluids usually are more unsteady, regardless of ALR . A short mixing chamber results in less unsteady for water but has no effect on spray unsteadiness for high-viscosity or non-Newtonian fluids at ALR of 0.15. Otherwise, the influence of mixing chamber distance on the spray quality is weak at ALR of 0.15. Large diameter of inclined aeration holes shows the low spray unsteadiness and good spray quality for water but causes more unsteady for glycerol/water/xanthan mixture at ALR of 0.15. Furthermore, the diameter of the inclined aeration holes has little influence on spray unsteadiness for glycerol/water mixture. Spray unsteadiness and quality are not affected by the angle of aeration holes for three fluids at ALR of 0.15.

Abstract: IceCube, a gigaton-scale neutrino detector located at the South Pole, was primarily designed to search for astrophysical neutrinos with energies of PeV and higher. This goal has been achieved with the detection of the highest energy neutrinos to date. At the other end of the energy spectrum, the DeepCore extension lowers the energy threshold of the detector to approximately 10 GeV and opens the door for oscillation studies using atmospheric neutrinos. An analysis of the disappearance of these neutrinos has been completed, with the results produced being complementary with dedicated oscillation experiments. Following a review of the detector principle and performance, the method used to make these calculations, as well as the results, is detailed. Finally, the future prospects of IceCube-DeepCore and the next generation of neutrino experiments at the South Pole (IceCube-Gen2, specifically the PINGU sub-detector) are briefly discussed., National Science Foundation (U.S.). Abstract: We report constraints on the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) above $10^{9}$ GeV, based on an analysis of seven years of IceCube data. This analysis efficiently selects very high energy neutrino-induced events which have deposited energies from $\sim 10^6$ GeV to above $10^{11}$ GeV. Two neutrino-induced events with an estimated deposited energy of $(2.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^6$ GeV, the highest neutrino energies observed so far, and $(7.7 \pm 2.0) \times 10^5$ GeV were detected. The atmospheric background-only hypothesis of detecting these events is rejected at 3.6$\sigma$. The hypothesis that the observed events are of cosmogenic origin is also rejected at $>$99% CL because of the limited deposited energy and the non-observation of events at higher energy, while their observation is consistent with an astrophysical origin. Our limits on cosmogenic neutrino fluxes disfavor the UHECR sources having cosmological evolution stronger than the star formation rate, e.g., active galactic nuclei and $\gamma$-ray bursts, assuming proton-dominated UHECRs. Constraints on UHECR sources including mixed and heavy UHECR compositions are obtained for models of neutrino production within UHECR sources. Our limit disfavors a significant part of parameter space for active galactic nuclei and new-born pulsar models., Comment: The erratum is bundled with the original published version of the letter together with supplemental materials

Abstract: The Milky Way is expected to be embedded in a halo of dark matter particles, with the highest density in the central region, and decreasing density with the halo-centric radius. Dark matter might be indirectly detectable at Earth through a flux of stable particles generated in dark matter annihilations and peaked in the direction of the Galactic Center. We present a search for an excess flux of muon (anti-) neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the Galactic Center using the cubic-kilometer-sized IceCube neutrino detector at the South Pole. There, the Galactic Center is always seen above the horizon. Thus, new and dedicated veto techniques against atmospheric muons are required to make the southern hemisphere accessible for IceCube. We used 319.7 live-days of data from IceCube operating in its 79-string configuration during 2010 and 2011. No neutrino excess was found and the final result is compatible with the background. Abstract: We present a measurement of the atmospheric $\nu_e$ spectrum at energies between 0.1 TeV and 100 TeV using data from the first year of the complete IceCube detector. Atmospheric $\nu_e$ originate mainly from the decays of kaons produced in cosmic-ray air showers. This analysis selects 1078 fully contained events in 332 days of livetime, then identifies those consistent with particle showers. A likelihood analysis with improved event selection extends our previous measurement of the conventional $\nu_e$ fluxes to higher energies. The data constrain the conventional $\nu_e$ flux to be $1.3^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ times a baseline prediction from a Honda's calculation, including the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum. A fit to the kaon contribution ($\xi$) to the neutrino flux finds a kaon component that is $\xi =1.3^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ times the baseline value. The fitted/measured prompt neutrino flux from charmed hadron decays strongly depends on the assumed astrophysical flux and shape. If the astrophysical component follows a power law, the result for the prompt flux is $0.0^{+3.0}_{-0.0}$ times a calculated flux based on the work by Enberg, Reno and Sarcevic., Comment: PRD accepted version

Abstract: The studies on the behavior of the accessory elements during coal combustion are helpful to control the emission of the hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions. In this paper, the release of the hazardous accessory elements, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Se, and V in the initial stage of coal combustion was studied. Three sequential extraction agents, including the water, the ammonium acetate solution (AAS) and the hydrochloric acid solution (HAS) as indicated order, were employed to determine the occurrence of each element. The results showed that there were obvious differences in the volatility performance among the elements in this stage, almost nonvolatile capacity for elements Mn, Ni and P; low volatile capacity for elements As, Co and V; volatile capacity for elements Cd, Cr and Pb; and high volatile capacity for elements Sb and Se. The experimental results also showed that the volatility of the element is depended on the occurrence modes of element, the type of the coals, and the operating conditions. During the initial stage of coal combustion, there was also some transformation among the different occurrence modes of element defined as the water soluble (WS), the ammonium acetate soluble, the acid soluble and the acid insoluble (AI).

50. Investigation on sulfation of modified Ca-based sorbent

Abstract: When applied for desulfurization in coal combustion process, common Ca-based sorbents have very low Ca conversion and some additives were found can improve the sulfation effect of sorbents greatly. The sulfation characteristics and pore structure of Ca-based sorbent modified by some inorganic compound were investigated in this paper. Although the sulfur capture capability of M-CaO (calcined from modified limestone) greatly exceeds that of N-CaO (calcined from original limestone), the M-CaO sulfation phenomena cannot be explained well based only on pore structure, as has been suggested by some investigators. To find the sulfation mechanism, the crystal structure of M-CaO was measured. Based on experiments and solid-state ions diffusion theory, a new sulfation mechanism is proposed: lattice defects in M-CaO lead to higher calcium conversion. Based on this conclusion, a rule that estimates whether or not a compound can act as a Ca-based sorbent additive is suggested.
