Micron-sized magnetic particles (M-MPs) have low toxicity, strong magnetic signals, and long-term retention capability, which are significant advantages for their application in biomedical imaging. Unfortunately, M-MPs are only internalized by few cell types, such as macrophages and phagocytes, and because of this lack of active intracellular delivery, their applications are restricted. The emergence of self-assembled virus-like particles (VLPs) offers a viable approach to drive M-MPs into cells, although the specific mechanism has not been revealed. In this study, we investigated in detail the intracellular pathway of M-MPs mediated by VLPs using a fluorescence co-localization method. The results indicated that the intracellular movement of M-MPs was consistent with the virus infection pathway, specifically caveolae-dependent endocytosis, transportation through microtubules, and accumulation in the endoplasmic reticulum. This study provides experimental support for the active transport of M-MPs into other cell types, thereby further extending their applications.

International audience; PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the Subaru telescope, is now being tested on the telescope. The instrument is equipped with very wide (1.3 degrees in diameter) field of view on the Subaru's prime focus, high multiplexity by 2394 reconfigurable fibers, and wide waveband spectrograph that covers from 380nm to 1260nm simultaneously in one exposure. Currently engineering observations are ongoing with Prime Focus Instrument (PFI), Metrology Camera System (MCS), the first spectrpgraph module (SM1) with visible cameras and the first fiber cable providing optical link between PFI and SM1. Among the rest of the hardware, the second fiber cable has been already installed on the telescope and in the dome building since April 2022, and the two others were also delivered in June 2022. The integration and test of next SMs including near-infrared cameras are ongoing for timely deliveries. The progress in the software development is also worth noting. The instrument control software delivered with the subsystems is being well integrated with its system-level layer, the telescope system, observation planning software and associated databases. The data reduction pipelines are also rapidly progressing especially since sky spectra started being taken in early 2021 using Subaru Nigh Sky Spectrograph (SuNSS), and more recently using PFI during the engineering observations. In parallel to these instrumentation activities, the PFS science team in the collaboration is timely formulating a plan of large-sky survey observation to be proposed and conducted as a Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) from 2024. In this article, we report these recent progresses, ongoing developments and future perspectives of the PFS instrumentation.

Mock member stars for 28 dwarf galaxies are constructed from the cosmological Auriga simulation, which reflect the dynamical status of realistic stellar tracers. The axis-symmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) modeling is applied to 6,000 star particles for each system, to recover the underlying matter distribution. The stellar or dark matter component individually is poorly recovered, but the total profile is constrained more reasonably. The mass within the half-mass radius of tracers is recovered the tightest, and the mass between 200 and 300 pc, $M(200-300\mathrm{pc})$, is constrained ensemble unbiasedly, with a scatter of 0.167 dex. If using 2,000 particles and only line-of-sight velocities with typical errors, the scatter in $M(200-300\mathrm{pc})$ is increased by $\sim$50%. Quiescent Sagittarius dSph-like systems and star-forming systems with strong outflows show distinct features, with $M(200-300\mathrm{pc})$ mostly under-estimated for the former, and likely over-estimated for the latter. The biases correlate with the dynamical status, which is a result of contraction motions due to tidal effects in quiescent systems or galactic winds in star-forming systems, driving them out of equilibrium. After including Gaia DR3 proper motion errors, we find proper motions can be as useful as line-of-sight velocities for nearby systems at $, accepted by ApJ

We provide a method for estimating the projected density distribution $\bar{n}_2w_p(r_p)$ of photometric objects around spectroscopic objects in a redshift survey. This quantity describes the distribution of Photometric sources with certain physical properties (e.g. luminosity, mass, color etc) Around Cosmic webs (PAC) traced by the spectroscopic objects. The method can make full use of current and future deep and wide photometric surveys to explore the formation of galaxies up to medium redshift ($z_s < 2$), with the aid of cosmological redshift surveys that sample only a fairly limited species of objects (e.g. Emission Line Galaxies). As an example, we apply the PAC method to the CMASS spectroscopic and HSC-SSP PDR2 photometric samples to explore the distribution of galaxies for a wide range of stellar mass from $10^{9.0}{\rm M_\odot}$ to $10^{12.0}{\rm M_\odot}$ around massive ones at $z_s\approx 0.6$. Using the abundance matching method, we model $\bar{n}_2w_p(r_p)$ in N-body simulation using MCMC sampling, and accurately measure the stellar-halo mass relation (SHMR) and stellar mass function (SMF) for the whole mass range. We can also measure the conditional stellar mass function (CSMF) of satellites for central galaxies of different mass. Understanding the physical connection between cluster galaxies and massive haloes is key to mitigating systematic uncertainties in next-generation cluster cosmology. We develop a novel method to infer the level of conformity between the stellar mass of the brightest central galaxies~(BCGs) $M_*^{BCG}$ and the satellite richness $\lambda$, defined as their correlation coefficient $\rho_{cc}$ at fixed halo mass, using the abundance and weak lensing of SDSS clusters as functions of $M_*^{BCG}$ and $\lambda$. We detect a halo mass-dependent conformity as $\rho_{cc}{=}0.60{+}0.08\ln(M_h/3{\times}10^{14}M_{\odot}/h)$. The strong conformity successfully resolves the "halo mass equality" conundrum discovered in Zu et al. 2021 -- when split by $M_*^{BCG}$ at fixed $\lambda$, the low and high-$M_*^{BCG}$ clusters have the same average halo mass despite having a $0.34$ dex discrepancy in average $M_*^{BCG}$. On top of the best-fitting conformity model, we develop a cluster assembly bias~(AB) prescription calibrated against the CosmicGrowth simulation, and build a conformity+AB model for the cluster weak lensing measurements. Our model predicts that with a ${\sim}20\%$ lower halo concentration $c$, the low-$M_*^{BCG}$ clusters are ${\sim}10\%$ more biased than the high-$M_*^{BCG}$ systems, in excellent agreement with the observations. We also show that the observed conformity and assembly bias are unlikely due to projection effects. Finally, we build a toy model to argue that while the early-time BCG-halo co-evolution drives the $M_*^{BCG}$-$c$ correlation, the late-time dry merger-induced BCG growth naturally produces the $M_*^{BCG}$-$\lambda$ conformity despite the well-known anti-correlation between $\lambda$ and $c$. In a recent study, we developed a method that models the impact of photometric redshift uncertainty on the two-point correlation function (2PCF). Using this method, we simultaneously obtained both the intrinsic clustering strength and the photometric redshift errors by fitting the projected 2PCF with two integration depths along the line-of-sight. Herein, we apply this method to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 8 (LS DR8), which is the largest galaxy sample currently available. We separate the galaxies into 20 samples in eight redshift bins, from z = 0.1 to z = 1.0, and several z-band absolute magnitude bins, with Mz ≤ −20. These galaxies are further divided into red and blue subsamples according to their M r 0.5 - M z 0.5 colors. We measure the projected 2PCFs for all these galaxy subsamples and fit them using our photometric redshift 2PCF model. We find that the photometric redshift errors are smaller in the red subsamples than in the overall population. In contrast, some systematic photometric redshift errors exist in the blue subsamples, such that some of the subsamples show a significantly enhanced 2PCF on large scales. Therefore, separately focusing only on the red subsamples and on all the subsamples, we find that the biases of the galaxies in these subsamples exhibit clear color, redshift, and luminosity dependencies; the brighter red galaxies at higher redshift are more biased than their bluer and low-redshift counterparts. Apart from the best-fit set of parameters, σz and b, from this state-of-the-art photometric redshift survey, we obtain high-precision intrinsic clustering measurements for these 40 red- and all-galaxy subsamples. These measurements, on large and small scales, hold important information regarding cosmology and galaxy formation that will be used in our subsequent probes in this series.

Using two sets of large $N$-body simulations, we study the origin of the correlations of halo assembly time ($z_{\rm f}$), concentration ($v_{\rm max}/v_{\rm 200}$) and spin ($\lambda$) with the large-scale evolved density field at given halo mass, i.e. the secondary bias. We find that the secondary bias is the secondary effect of the correlations of halo properties with the linear density estimated at the same comoving scale. Using the linear density on different scales, we find two types of correlations. The internal correlation, which reflects the correlation of halo properties with the mean linear over-density $\delta_{\rm L}$ within the halo Lagrangian radius $R_{\rm L}$, is positive for both $z_{\rm f}$ and $v_{\rm max}/v_{\rm 200}$, and negative for $\lambda$. The external correlation, which describes the correlation of halo properties with linear overdensity at $R>R_{\rm L}$ for given $\delta_{\rm L}$, shows trends opposite to the internal correlation. Both of the external and internal correlations depend only weakly on halo mass, indicating a similar origin for halos of different masses. Our findings offer a transparent perspective on the origin of the secondary bias. The secondary bias can be largely explained by the competition of the external and internal correlations together with the correlation of the linear density field on different scales. PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the Subaru telescope, is a very wide- field, massively multiplexed, and optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed in the 1.3 degree-diameter field of view. The spectrograph system has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously deliver spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure. The instrumentation has been conducted by the international collaboration managed by the project office hosted by Kavli IPMU. The team is actively integrating and testing the hardware and software of the subsystems some of which such as Metrology Camera System, the first Spectrograph Module, and the first on-telescope fiber cable have been delivered to the Subaru telescope observatory at the summit of Maunakea since 2018. The development is progressing in order to start on-sky engineering observation in 2021, and science operation in 2023. In parallel, the collaboration is trying to timely develop a plan of large-sky survey observation to be proposed and conducted in the framework of Subaru Strategic Program (SSP). This article gives an overview of the recent progress, current status and future perspectives of the instrumentation and scientific operation.

Using the extended halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al. (2021), which is able to deal with galaxies via spectroscopic and photometric redshifts simultaneously, we construct galaxy group and candidate protocluster catalogs in a wide redshift range ($0 < z < 6$) from the joint CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) deep data set. Based on a selection of 5,607,052 galaxies with $i$-band magnitude $m_{i} < 26$ and a sky coverage of $34.41\ {\rm deg}^2$, we identify a total of 2,232,134 groups, within which 402,947 groups have at least three member galaxies. We have visually checked and discussed the general properties of those richest groups at redshift $z>2.0$. By checking the galaxy number distributions within a $5-7\ h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$ projected separation and a redshift difference $Δz \le 0.1$ around those richest groups at redshift $z>2$, we identified a list of 761, 343 and 43 protocluster candidates in the redshift bins $2\leq z, 25 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a two-dimensional (2D) Particle-Particle-Particle-Mesh (P$^3$M) algorithm with an optimized Green function and adaptive softening length for gravitational lensing studies in N-Body simulations. The analytical form of the optimized Green function $\hat{G}(\rm{k})$ is given. The softening schemes ($S$) are studied for both the PM and the PP calculations in order for accurate force calculation and suppression of the particle discreteness effect. Our method is two orders of magnitude more accurate than the simple PM algorithm with the {\it poor man's} Green function ($\propto1/k^2$) at a scale of a few mesh cells or smaller. The force anisotropy is also much smaller than the conventional PM calculation. We can achieve a force accuracy better than 0.1 percent at all scales with our algorithm, which makes it an ideal (accurate and fast) algorithm for {\textit{micro}} lensing studies . When we apply the algorithm to computing {\textit{weak}} and {\textit{strong}} lensing quantities in N-Body simulations, the errors are dominated by the Poisson noise caused by particle discreteness. The Poisson noise can be suppressed by smoothing out the particle distribution, which can be achieved by simply choosing an adaptive softening length in the PP calculation. We have presented a criterion to set the adaptive softening length. Our algorithm is also applicable to cosmological simulations. We report a giant red central disk galaxy in the XMM-LSS north region. The region is covered with a rich variety of multiband photometric and spectroscopic observations. Using the photometric data of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) and spectroscopic observation of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), we find that the galaxy has a stellar mass of $\sim 10^{11.6}$ times of the solar mass $M_\odot$. The galaxy has a red color and has an old stellar population, and thus its star formation has stopped. With the photometric image data of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program, we demonstrate that its luminosity profile is perfectly described by a S\'ersic form with $n=1.22$ indicating disk morphology. We also analyze its environment based on the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) photometric catalog, and find that its close neighbors are all less massive, indicating that our observed galaxy is sitting at the center of its host halo. Existence of the giant red central disk galaxy seriously challenges the current standard paradigm of galaxy formation, as there is no known physical mechanism to explain the quenching of its star formation. Using photometric galaxies from the HSC survey, we measure the stellar mass density profiles for satellite galaxies as a function of the projected distance, $r_p$, to isolated central galaxies (ICGs) selected from SDSS/DR7 spectroscopic galaxies at $z\sim0.1$. By stacking HSC images, we also measure the projected stellar mass density profiles for ICGs and their stellar halos. The total mass distributions are further measured from HSC weak lensing signals. ICGs dominate within $\sim$0.15 times the halo virial radius ($0.15R_{200}$). The stellar mass versus total mass fractions drop with the increase in $r_p$ up to $\sim0.15R_{200}$, beyond which they are less than 1\% while stay almost constant, indicating the radial distribution of satellites trace dark matter. The total stellar mass in satellites is proportional to the virial mass of the host halo, $M_{200}$, for ICGs more massive than $10^{10.5}M_\odot$, i.e., $M_{\ast,\mathrm{sat}} \propto M_{200}$, whereas the relation between the stellar mass of ICGs $+$ stellar halos and $M_{200}$ is close to $M_{\ast,\mathrm{ICG+diffuse}}\propto M_{200}^{1/2}$. Below $10^{10.5}M_\odot$, the change in $M_{200}$ is much slower with the decrease in $M_{\ast,\mathrm{ICG+diffuse}}$. At fixed stellar mass, red ICGs are hosted by more massive dark matter halos and have more satellites. At $M_{200}\sim10^{12.7}M_\odot$, both $M_{\ast,\mathrm{sat}}$ and the fraction of stellar mass in satellites versus total stellar mass, $f_\mathrm{sat}$, tend to be slightly higher around blue ICGs, perhaps implying the late formation of blue galaxies. $f_\mathrm{sat}$ increases with the increase in both $M_{\ast,\mathrm{ICG+diffuse}}$ and $M_{200}$, and scales more linearly with $M_{200}$. We employ a set of high resolution N-body simulations to study the merger rate of dark matter halos. We define a specific merger rate by normalizing the average number of mergers per halo with the logarithmic mass growth change of the hosts at the time of accretion. Based on the simulation results, we find that this specific merger rate, $\mathrm{d}N_{\mathrm{merge}}(\xi|M,z)/\mathrm{d}\xi/\mathrm{d}\log M(z)$, has a universal form, which is only a function of the mass ratio of merging halo pairs, $\xi$, and does not depend on the host halo mass, $M$, or redshift, $z$, over a wide range of masses ($10^{12}\lesssim M \lesssim10^{14}\,M_\odot/h$) and merger ratios ($\xi\ge 1e-2$). We further test with simulations of different $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$, and get the same specific merger rate. The universality of the specific merger rate shows that halos in the universe are built up self-similarly, with a universal composition in the mass contributions and an absolute merger rate that grows in proportion to the halo mass growth. As a result, the absolute merger rate relates with redshift and cosmology only through the halo mass variable, whose evolution can be readily obtained from the universal mass accretion history (MAH) model of \cite{2009ApJ...707..354Z}. Lastly, we show that this universal specific merger rate immediately predicts an universal un-evolved subhalo mass function that is independent on the redshift, MAH or the final halo mass, and vice versa., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; accepted by ApJ

In this paper, we report a robust measurement of the morphology, color and galaxy size dependences of the stellar-halo mass relation (SHMR) at the high mass end ($10^{11.3}{\rm M_{\odot}}6$) have the halo mass around 5.5 times larger than the disk galaxies ($n, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2109.11738

We investigate the level of galaxy assembly bias in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample using ELUCID, a state-of-the-art constrained simulation that accurately reconstructed the initial density perturbations within the SDSS volume. On top of the ELUCID haloes, we develop an extended HOD model that includes the assembly bias of central and satellite galaxies, parameterized as $\mathcal{Q}_\mathrm{cen}$ and $\mathcal{Q}_\mathrm{sat}$, respectively, to predict a suite of one- and two-point observables. In particular, our fiducial constraint employs the probability distribution of the galaxy number counts measured on $8\,\mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$ scales $N_8^g$ and the projected cross-correlation functions of quintiles of galaxies selected by $N_8^g$ with our entire galaxy sample. We perform extensive tests of the efficacy of our method by fitting the same observables to mock data using both constrained and non-constrained simulations. We discover that in many cases the level of cosmic variance between the two simulations can produce biased constraints that lead to an erroneous detection of galaxy assembly bias if the non-constrained simulation is used. When applying our method to the SDSS data, the ELUCID reconstruction effectively removes an otherwise strong degeneracy between cosmic variance and galaxy assembly bias in SDSS, enabling us to derive an accurate and stringent constraint on the latter. Our fiducial ELUCID constraint, for galaxies above a stellar mass threshold $M_*{=}10^{10.2}\,h^{-2}\,M_\odot$, is $\mathcal{Q}_\mathrm{cen}{=}{-}0.09\pm{0.05}$ and $\mathcal{Q}_\mathrm{sat}{=}0.09\pm{0.10}$, indicating no evidence for a significant~($>2\sigma$) galaxy assembly bias in the local Universe probed by SDSS. In this paper we present a simple color-magnitude selection and obtain a large sample of 33,893 massive quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts (110.5, with a median of log(M*/M_sun)=11.0. A small fraction of our galaxies is also covered by the HST CANDELS. Morphological analysis in the observed H band shows that the majority of this subsample are early-type galaxies. As massive early-type galaxies trace the high density regions in the large scale structure in the universe, our study provides a quick and simple way to obtain a statistical significant sample of massive galaxies in a relative narrow redshift range. Our sample is 7-20 times larger at the massive end (log(M*/M_sun)>10.5) than any existing samples obtained in previous surveys. We propose a versatile and accurate method to estimate the halo mass and concentration from the kinematics of satellite galaxies. We construct the 6D phase-space distribution function of satellites from a cosmological simulation based on the similarity of internal dynamics for different halos. Within the Bayesian statistical framework, not only can we infer the halo mass and concentration efficiently, but also treat various observational effects, including the selection function, incomplete data, and measurement errors, in a rigorous and straightforward manner. Through tests with mock samples, we show that our method is valid and accurate, and more precise than pure steady-state methods. It can constrain the halo mass to within ~ 20% using only 20 tracers and has a small intrinsic uncertainty of ~ 10%. In addition to the clear application to the Milky Way and similar galaxies, our method can be extended to galaxy groups or clusters., 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have obtained three-dimensional maps of the universe in $\sim200\times200\times80$ comoving Mpc$^3$ (cMpc$^3$) volumes each at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ based on a spectroscopic sample of 179 galaxies that achieves $\gtrsim80$\% completeness down to the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity of $\log(L_{\rm Ly\alpha}/[\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}])=43.0$, based on our Keck and Gemini observations and the literature. The maps reveal filamentary large-scale structures and two remarkable overdensities made out of at least 44 and 12 galaxies at $z=5.692$ (z57OD) and $z=6.585$ (z66OD), respectively, making z66OD the most distant overdensity spectroscopically confirmed to date with $>10$ spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. We compare spatial distributions of submillimeter galaxies at $z\simeq 4-6$ with our $z=5.7$ galaxies forming the large-scale structures, and detect a $99.97\%$ signal of cross correlation, indicative of a clear coincidence of dusty star-forming galaxy and dust unobscured galaxy formation at this early epoch. The galaxies in z57OD and z66OD are actively forming stars with star formation rates (SFRs) $\gtrsim5$ times higher than the main sequence, and particularly the SFR density in z57OD is 10 times higher than the cosmic average at the redshift (a.k.a. the Madau-Lilly plot). Comparisons with numerical simulations suggest that z57OD and z66OD are protoclusters that are progenitors of the present-day clusters with halo masses of $\sim10^{14}\ \mathrm{M_\odot}$., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

We develop a novel method to explore the galaxy-halo connection using the galaxy imaging surveys by modeling the projected two-point correlation function measured from the galaxies with reasonable photometric redshift measurements. By assuming a Gaussian form of the photometric redshift errors, we are able to simultaneously constrain the halo occupation distribution (HOD) models and the effective photometric redshift uncertainties. Tests with mock galaxy catalogs demonstrate that this method can successfully recover (within $\sim 1\sigma$) the intrinsic large-scale galaxy bias, as well as the HOD models and the effective photometric redshift uncertainty. We present optical luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies in the $^{0.1}g$, $^{0.1}r$, and $^{0.1}i$ bands, calculated using data in $\sim 40$ $deg^{2}$ sky area of LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in Southern Galactic Cap. Redshifts for galaxies brighter $r = 18.1$ were obtained mainly with LAMOST. In each band, LFs derived using both parametric and non-parametric maximum likelihood methods agree well with each other. In the $^{0.1}r$ band, our fitting parameters of the Schechter function are $\phi_{*}=(1.65\pm0.36)\times10^{-2}h^{3}Mpc^{-3}$, $M_{*}=-20.69\pm0.06$ mag, and $\alpha=-1.12\pm0.08$, in agreements with previous studies. Separate LFs are also derived for emission line galaxies and absorption line galaxies, respectively. Merger trees are routinely used to follow the growth and merging history of dark matter haloes and subhaloes in simulations of cosmic structure formation. Srisawat et al. (2013) compared a wide range of merger-tree-building codes. Here we test the influence of output strategies and mass resolution on tree-building. We find that, somewhat surprisingly, building the tree from more snapshots does not generally produce more complete trees; instead, it tends to short- en them. Significant improvements are seen for patching schemes which attempt to bridge over occasional dropouts in the underlying halo catalogues or schemes which combine the halo-finding and tree-building steps seamlessly. The adopted output strategy does not affec- t the average number of branches (bushiness) of the resultant merger trees. However, mass resolution has an influence on both main branch length and the bushiness. As the resolution increases, a halo with the same mass can be traced back further in time and will encounter more small progenitors during its evolutionary history. Given these results, we recommend that, for simulations intended as precursors for galaxy formation models where of order 100 or more snapshots are analysed, the tree-building routine should be integrated with the halo finder, or at the very least be able to patch over multiple adjacent snapshots., 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) with strong [OII] doublet are one of the main spectroscopic targets for the ongoing and upcoming fourth generation galaxy redshift surveys. The 21 cm intensity mapping experiments promise to obtain the large-scale distribution of HI gas at the post-reionization epoch. In order to reveal the underlying matter density fluctuations from the HI mapping, it is important to understand how HI gas traces the matter density distribution. Both nonlinear halo clustering and nonlinear effects modulating HI gas in halos may determine the scale below which the HI bias deviates from linearity. We employ three approaches to generate the mock HI density from a large-scale N-body simulation at low redshifts, and demonstrate that the assumption of HI linearity is valid at the scale corresponding to the first peak of baryon acoustic oscillations, but breaks down at $k \gtrsim 0.1\,h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The nonlinear effects of halo clustering and HI content modulation counteract each other at small scales, and their competition results in a model-dependent "sweet-spot" redshift near $z$=1 where the HI bias is scale-independent down to small scales. The initial orbits of infalling subhalos largely determine the subsequent evolution of the subhalos and satellite galaxies therein and shed light on the assembly of their hosts. Using a large set of cosmological simulations of various resolutions, we quantify the orbital distribution of subhalos at infall time and its mass and redshift dependence in a large dynamic range. We further provide a unified and accurate model validated across cosmic time, which can serve as the initial condition for semi-analytic models. We find that the infall velocity $v$ follows a nearly universal distribution peaked near the host virial velocity $V_{\mathrm{h}}$ for any subhalo mass or redshift, while the infall orbit is most radially biased when $v\sim V_{\mathrm{h}}$. Moreover, subhalos that have a higher host mass or a higher sub-to-host ratio tend to move along a more radial direction with a relatively smaller angular momentum than their low host mass or low sub-to-host ratio counterparts, though they share the same normalized orbital energy. These relations are nearly independent of the redshift when using the density peak height as the proxy for host halo mass. The above trends are consistent with the scenario where the dynamical environment is relatively colder for more massive structures because their own gravity is more likely to dominate the local potentials. Chiral symmetry is maximally violated in weak interactions, and such microscopic asymmetries in the early Universe might leave observable imprints on astrophysical scales without violating the cosmological principle. In this Letter, we propose a helicity measurement to detect primordial chiral violation. We point out that observations of halo-galaxy angular momentum directions (spins), which are frozen in during the galaxy formation process, provide a fossil chiral observable. From the clustering mode of large scale structure of the Universe, we construct a spin mode in Lagrangian space and show in simulations that it is a good probe of halo-galaxy spins. In standard model, a strong symmetric correlation between the left and right helical components of this spin mode and galaxy spins is expected. Measurements of these correlations will be sensitive to chiral breaking, providing a direct test of chiral symmetry breaking in the early Universe., Comment: 6 pages (including Supplemental Material), 3 figures. We estimate the Milky Way (MW) halo properties using satellite kinematic data including the latest measurements from Gaia DR2. With a simulation-based 6D phase-space distribution function (DF) of satellite kinematics, we can infer halo properties efficiently and without bias, and handle the selection function and measurement errors rigorously in the Bayesian framework. Applying our DF from the EAGLE simulation to 28 satellites, we obtain an MW halo mass of $M=1.23_{-0.18}^{+0.21}\times 10^{12} M_\odot$ and a concentration of $c=9.4_{ -2.1}^{ +2.8}$ with the prior based on the $M$-$c$ relation. The inferred mass profile is consistent with previous measurements but with better precision and reliability due to the improved methodology and data. Potential improvement is illustrated by combining satellite data and stellar rotation curves. Using our EAGLE DF and best-fit MW potential, we provide much more precise estimates of kinematics for those satellites with uncertain measurements. Compared to the EAGLE DF, which matches the observed satellite kinematics very well, the DF from the semi-analytical model based on the dark-matter-only simulation Millennium II (SAM-MII) over-represents satellites with small radii and velocities. We attribute this difference to less disruption of satellites with small pericenter distances in the SAM-MII simulation. By varying the disruption rate of such satellites in this simulation, we estimate a $\sim 5\%$ scatter in the inferred MW halo mass among hydrodynamics-based simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; data tables available at https://github.com/syrte/mw_sats_kin

We study the faint stellar halo of isolated central galaxies, by stacking galaxy images in the HSC survey and accounting for the residual sky background sampled with random points. The surface brightness profiles in HSC $r$-band are measured for a wide range of galaxy stellar masses ($9.2, Comment: accepted by MNRAS - Significant changes have been made compared with the first version, including discussions on the extended PSF wings, robustness of our results to source detection and masking thresholds and more detailed investigations on the indications of positive colour gradients

Fiber collision is a persistent problem faced by modern spectroscopic galaxy surveys. In this work, we propose a new method to correct for this undesired effect, focusing on the clustering from the fiber-collision scale up to $\lesssim 10 \rm Mpc\,h^{-1}$. We assume that the fiber-collided galaxies are in association with their nearest three angular neighbors. Compared with the conventional nearest-neighbor method, we have properly accounted for the foreground (background) galaxies that are associated with the foreground (background) cosmic webs relative to the nearest neighbor. We have tested the new method with mock catalogs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). The test demonstrates that our new method can recover the projected two-point correlation functions at an accuracy better than 1\% on small (below the fiber-collision scale) to intermediate (i.e., $10 \rm Mpc\,h^{-1}$) scales, where the fiber collision takes effect and the SDSS main sample can probe. I present a large set of high resolution simulations, called CosmicGrowth Simulations, which were generated with either 8.6 billion or 29 billion particles. As the nominal cosmological model that can match nearly all observations on cosmological scales, I have adopted a flat Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model with a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ (${\Lambda}$CDM). The model parameters have been taken either from the latest result of the WMAP satellite (WMAP ${\Lambda}$CDM) or from the first year's result of the Planck satellite (Planck ${\Lambda}$CDM). Six simulations are produced in the ${\Lambda}$CDM models with two in the Planck model and the others in the WMAP model. In order for studying the nonlinear evolution of the clustering, four simulations were also produced with $8.6$ billion particles for the scale-free models of an initial power spectrum $P(k)\propto k^n$ with $n=0$,$-1$,$-1.5$ or $-2.0$. Furthermore, two radical CDM models (XCDM) are simulated with 8.6 billion particles each. Since the XCDM have some of the model parameters distinct from those of the ${\Lambda}$CDM models, they must be unable to match the observations, but are very useful for studying how the clustering properties depend on the model parameters. The Friends-of-Friends (FoF) halos were identified for each snapshot and subhalos were produced by the Hierarchical Branch Tracing (HBT) algorithm. We develop a novel approach in exploring the joint dependence of halo bias on multiple halo properties using Gaussian process regression. Using a $\Lambda$CDM $N$-body simulation, we carry out a comprehensive study of the joint bias dependence on halo structure, formation history and environment. We show that the bias is a multivariate function of halo properties that falls into three regimes. For massive haloes, halo mass explains the majority of bias variation. For early-forming haloes, bias depends sensitively on the recent mass accretion history. For low-mass and late-forming haloes, bias depends more on the structure of a halo such as its shape and spin. Our framework enables us to convincingly prove that $V_\mathrm{max}/V_\mathrm{vir}$ is a lossy proxy of formation time for bias modelling, whereas the mass, spin, shape and formation time variables are non-redundant with respect to each other. Combining mass and formation time largely accounts for the mass accretion history dependence of bias. Combining all the internal halo properties fully accounts for the density profile dependence inside haloes, and predicts the clustering variation of individual haloes to a $20\%$ level at $\sim 10\mathrm{Mpc}h^{-1}$. When an environmental density is measured outside $1\mathrm{Mpc}h^{-1}$ from the halo centre, it outperforms and largely accounts for the bias dependence on the internal halo structure, explaining the bias variation above a level of $30\%$., Comment: MNRAS accepted

PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, is a very wide-field, massively multiplexed, optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed over the 1.3 deg field of view. The spectrograph has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure at a resolution of ~ 1.6-2.7Å. An international collaboration is developing this instrument under the initiative of Kavli IPMU. The project recently started undertaking the commissioning process of a subsystem at the Subaru Telescope side, with the integration and test processes of the other subsystems ongoing in parallel. We are aiming to start engineering night-sky operations in 2019, and observations for scientific use in 2021. This article gives an overview of the instrument, current project status and future paths forward.

The galaxy intrinsic alignment (IA) is a major challenge of weak lensing cosmology. To alleviate this problem, Zhang (2010, MNRAS, 406, L95) proposed a self-calibration method, independent of IA modeling. This proposal relies on several scaling relations between two-point clustering of IA and matter/galaxy fields, which were previously only tested with analytical IA models. In this paper, these relations are tested comprehensively with an $N$-body simulation of $3072^3$ simulation particles and boxsize 600 $h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$. They are verified at the accuracy level of $\mathcal{O}(1)\%$ over angular scales and source redshifts of interest. We further confirm that these scaling relations are generic, insensitive to halo mass, weighting in defining halo ellipticities, photo-$z$ error, and misalignment between galaxy ellipticities and halo ellipticities. We also present and verify three new scaling relations on the B-mode IA. A long-standing issue in peculiar velocity cosmology is whether the halo/galaxy velocity bias $b_v=1$ at large scale. The resolution of this important issue must resort to high precision cosmological simulations. However, this is hampered by another long-standing `sampling artifact' problem in volume weighted velocity measurement. We circumvent this problem with a hybrid approach. We first measure statistics free of sampling artifact, then link them to volume weighted statistics in theory, finally solve for the velocity bias. $b_v$ determined by our method is not only free of sampling artifact, but also free of cosmic variance. We apply this method to a $\Lambda$CDM N-body simulation of $3072^3$ particles and $1200 Mpc/{\rm h}$ box size. For the first time, we determine the halo velocity bias to $0.1\%$-$1\%$ accuracy. Our major findings are as follows: (1) $b_v\neq 1$ at $k>0.1 h/{\rm Mpc}$. The deviation from unity ($|b_v-1|$) increases with $k$. Depending on halo mass and redshift, it may reach $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ at $k=0.2 h/{\rm Mpc}$ and $\mathcal{O}(0.05)$ at $k\sim 0.3 h/{\rm Mpc}$. The discovered $b_v\neq 1$ has statistically significant impact on structure growth rate measurement by spectroscopic redshift surveys, including DESI, Euclid and SKA. (2) Both the sign and the amplitude of $b_v-1$ depend on mass and redshift. These results disagree with the peak model prediction in that $b_v$ has much weaker deviation from unity, varies with redshift, and can be bigger than unity. (3) Most of the mass and redshift dependences can be compressed into a single dependence on the halo density bias. We present a spectroscopic redshift catalog from the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap (SGC), which is designed to observe all sources (Galactic and extra-galactic) by using repeating observations with a limiting magnitude of $r=18.1~mag$ in two $20~deg^2$ fields. The project is mainly focusing on the completeness of LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Surveys (LEGAS) in the SGC, the deficiencies of source selection methods and the basic performance parameters of LAMOST telescope. In both fields, more than 95% of galaxies have been observed. A post-processing has been applied to LAMOST 1D spectrum to remove the majority of remaining sky background residuals. More than 10,000 spectra have been visually inspected to measure the redshift by using combinations of different emission/absorption features with uncertainty of $\sigma_{z}/(1+z), Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 2 MRT, accepted by ApJS

We study the dependence of galaxy clustering on atomic gas mass using a sample of $\sim$16,000 galaxies with redshift in the range of $0.002510^8M_{\odot}$, drawn from the 70% complete sample of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. We construct subsamples of galaxies with $M_{\rm HI}$ above different thresholds, and make volume-limited clustering measurements in terms of three statistics: the projected two-point correlation function, the projected cross-correlation function with respect to a reference sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the redshift-space monopole moment. In contrast to previous studies, which found no/weak HI-mass dependence, we find both the clustering amplitude on scales above a few Mpc and the bias factors to increase significantly with increasing HI mass for subsamples with HI mass thresholds above $10^9M_{\odot}$. For HI mass thresholds below $10^9M_{\odot}$, while the measurements have large uncertainties caused by the limited survey volume and sample size, the inferred galaxy bias factors are systematically lower than the minimum halo bias factor from mass-selected halo samples. The simple halo model, in which galaxy content is only determined by halo mass, has difficulties in interpreting the clustering measurements of the HI-selected samples. We extend the simple model by including the halo formation time as an additional parameter. A model that puts HI-rich galaxies into halos that formed late can reproduce the clustering measurements reasonably well. We present the implications of our best-fitting model on the correlation of HI mass with halo mass and formation time, as well as the halo occupation distributions and HI mass functions for central and satellite galaxies.
