Against the backdrop of high-quality development of the national economy, the development of each city is also facing transformation and upgrading. Cities need high-quality development, and high-quality talents are the key. The problem of attracting high-quality talents in domestic small and medium-sized cities in high-quality development needs to be solved urgently. This paper takes Huai’an, a third-tier city in China, as an example, to understand the intentions and confusions of college students when they seek employment. The qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews is employed. The study finds that in small and medium-sized cities, factors hindering college students from staying in local cities for employment include that the intensity of the government in publicizing high-quality development has not reached to most college students, the guide courses in colleges and universities meet difficulties in the process of delivery, and college students' own career planning are not guided well. In response to the above problems, this paper puts forward suggestions such as strengthening the positive interaction between schools and college students, enhancing the publicity of high-quality urban development among college students, and closely integrating college students’ career guidance courses with local development. Quality development attracts more high-quality talents.

Due to the massive discharge of antibiotics in water, it is an urgent matter to remove antibiotics from waste water. The photocatalysts with high stability and activity have attracted extensive attention from researchers. By an in-situ polymerization method, polypyrrole (PPy) was modified on the surface of TiO2 (named as TiO2/PPy). By one-step reduction method, NiCoP was grafted on the surface of TiO2/PPy (named as TiO2/PPy/NiCoP) to synthesize the photocatalyst of TiO2/PPy/NiCoP for degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. The characterization results revealed that NiCoP was deposited on the surface of TiO2/PPy successfully. The photocatalytic experiment results illustrated that 83.2% of TC could be degraded at natural pH with 20 mg of TiO2/PPy/NiCoP in 50 mL of TC solution (10 mg/L) under visible light irradiation. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the attachment of NiCoP on the surface of TiO2/PPy which can enlarge the light response range of TiO2 effectively. Scavenger studies revealed that the degradation of TC was dominated by •O2− and h+. The photodegradation efficiency of TC with TiO2/PPy/NiCoP still reached over 74% after 5 consecutive cycles, indicating the potential applications in practical wastewater.

Myeloma cells produce excessive levels of dickkopf-1 (DKK1), which mediates the inhibition of Wnt signaling in osteoblasts, leading to multiple myeloma (MM) bone disease. Nevertheless, the precise mechanisms underlying DKK1 overexpression in myeloma remain incompletely understood. Herein, we provide evidence that hypoxia promotes DKK1 expression in myeloma cells. Under hypoxic conditions, p38 kinase phosphorylated cAMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB) and drove its nuclear import to activate DKK1 transcription. In addition, high levels of DKK1 were associated with the presence of focal bone lesions in patients with t(4;14) MM, overexpressing the histone methyltransferase MMSET, which was identified as a downstream target gene of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α. Furthermore, we found that CREB could recruit MMSET, leading to the stabilization of HIF-1α protein and the increased dimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 36 on the DKK1 promoter. Knockdown of CREB in myeloma cells alleviated the suppression of osteoblastogenesis by myeloma-secreted DKK1 in vitro. Combined treatment with a CREB inhibitor and the hypoxia-activated prodrug TH-302 (evofosfamide) significantly reduced MM-induced bone destruction in vivo. Taken together, our findings reveal that hypoxia and a cytogenetic abnormality regulate DKK1 expression in myeloma cells, and provide an additional rationale for the development of therapeutic strategies that interrupt DKK1 to cure MM.

Ischemic stroke, the third leading cause of disability globally, imposes a notable economic burden. Tetrandrine (Tet), which has been widely used clinically, exhibits potential protective effects against stroke. However, there has been little pre-clinical research to evaluate the therapeutic effects of Tet on stroke. The present study investigated the beneficial effect of Tet on ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and its underlying mechanism in rats. Rats were subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery, then treated with Tet (30 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal) in the subacute phase for 7 days. In order to detect the effects of Tet on the behavior of rats, modified neurological severity score and longa behavior, grasping capability and inclined plane tests were conducted on days 1, 3 and 7 following cerebral ischemia. In addition, neuronal apoptosis in the cortex and hippocampus following ischemia was assessed by Nissl staining and TUNEL assay. Finally, oxidative stress was evaluated by measurement of free radicals and immunofluorescence staining of LC3 was used to assess autophagy. Tet improved neurological function and decreased infarct volume in I/R injury rats. Tet also prevented neuronal apoptosis in the cortex and hippocampus region. In addition, Tet protected against oxidative damage following ischemia, which was reflected by decreased levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde and increased levels of glutathione (GSH) and GSH peroxidase. In addition, the expression levels of the autophagy marker LC3 decreased in the Tet treatment group. In conclusion, Tet attenuated I/R-induced neuronal damage in the subacute phase by decreasing oxidative stress, apoptosis and autophagy.

Recently, aqueous organic contaminants such as antibiotic are a problem worldwide because of the adverse health impacts and potential ecotoxicology. Nanocomposites-based adsorption has been considered as one of the most promising methods for treating organic contaminants in water. Here, an effective adsorbent of polypyrrole doped GO/COF-300 (GO/COF-300/PPy) nanocomposite was prepared for the first time. The characteristic of the GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites implied that the absorbent was a mesoporous material with a porous structure. Additionally, the GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites were applied for the removal of indomethacin (IDM) and diclofenac (DCF) from aqueous solution as an effective adsorbent. The adsorption characteristics and mechanism of GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites were explored. With fast adsorption equilibrium (60 min), the adsorbents showed high adsorption capacity both for IDM (115 mg/g) and DCF (138 mg/g) under natural pH condition. The adsorption kinetics and process conformed to the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, there was no obvious effect on the adsorption performance of GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites with high concentration of humic acid in the environment. With good reusability, the GO/2COF-300/4PPy adsorbents still maintained higher removal efficiency both for IDM (72%) and DCF (68%) after 8 cycles of regeneration. The bacterial activity experiments demonstrated that the GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites were effective to remove IDM and DCF from aqueous solution. This study suggests the potential application of GO/2COF-300/4PPy nanocomposites in the water environmental remediation.

Random testing (RT) is a well-studied testing method that has been widely applied to the testing of many applications, including embedded software systems, SQL database systems, and Android applications. Adaptive random testing (ART) aims to enhance RT's failure-detection ability by more evenly spreading the test cases over the input domain. Since its introduction in 2001, there have been many contributions to the development of ART, including various approaches, implementations, assessment and evaluation methods, and applications. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on ART, classifying techniques, summarizing application areas, and analyzing experimental evaluations. This paper also addresses some misconceptions about ART, and identifies open research challenges to be further investigated in the future work.

The novel Al-MOF@PPy@Au nanocomposites were synthesized by an in-situ growth method. The prepared Al-MOF@PPy@Au nanocomposites were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic properties of the prepared Al-MOF@PPy@Au nanocomposites with different content of Au were investigated. The results illustrated that the Al-MOF@PPy@Au(G) with 27.80 wt.% (w/w) Au obtained good catalytic performance. P-nitrophenol (4-NP), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) were used to test the catalytic degradation of Al-MOF@PPy@Au(G) nanocomposites. The degradation efficiency of the Al-MOF@PPy@Au(G) nanocomposites for 4-NP, MO, MB and RhB reached 92.12%, 93.84%, 93.19% and 92.44% within 25 min, 7 min, 16 min and 2 min, respectively. The Al-MOF@PPy@Au(G) nanocomposites still have good degradation efficiency and good stability for 4-NP within one month being in water. The Al-MOF@PPy@Au(G) nanocomposites can be applied to the real water solution without causing the change of the degradation efficiency.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of the blending teaching mode of SPOC (Small Private Online Course) and DingTalk. From three major teaching links, the design and development of learning resources, the evaluation and suggestions of teaching activities, the online and offline blending teaching model of "SPOC + DingTalk" is discussed to provide implementation suggestions for teaching management and practical subjects including teachers.

Multiple myeloma (MM) induced bone lesion is one of the most crippling characteristics, and the MM secreted Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) has been reported to play important role in this pathologic process. However, the underlying regulation mechanisms involved in DKK1 expression are still unclear. In this study, we validated the expression patterns of microRNA (miR) 15a, 34a, 152, and 223 in MM cells and identified that miR-152 was significantly downregulated in the MM group compared with the non-MM group, and that miR-152 level was negatively correlated with the expression of DKK1 in the MM cells. Mechanistic studies showed that manipulating miR-152 artificially in MM cells led to changes in DKK-1 expression, and miR-152 blocked DKK1 transcriptional activity by binding to the 3'UTR of DKK1 mRNA. Importantly, we revealed that MM cells stably expressing miR-152 improved the chemotherapy sensitivity, and counteracted the bone disruption in an intrabone-MM mouse model. Our study contributes better understanding of the regulation mechanism of DKK-1 in MM, and opens up the potential for developing newer therapeutic strategies in the MM treatment.

A good understanding of the mechanism of interaction between quantum dots (QDs) and heavy metal ions is essential for the design of more effective sensor systems. In this work, CE was introduced to explore how l-cysteine-capped-CdTe QDs (l-cys-CdTe QDs) interacts with Hg(2+) . The change in electrophoretic mobility can synchronously reflect the change in the composition and property of QDs. The effects of the free and capping ligands on the system are discussed in detail. ESI-MS, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, and fluorescence (FL) were also applied as cooperative tools to study the interaction mechanism. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism, which principally depended on the concentration of Hg(2+) , was proposed reasonably. At the low concentration of Hg(2+) , the formation of a static complex between Hg(2+) and the carboxyl and amino groups of l-cys-CdTe QDs surface was responsible for the FL quenching. With the increase of Hg(2+) concentration, the capping l-cys was stripped from the surface of l-cys-CdTe QDs due to the high affinity of Hg(2+) to the thiol group of l-cys. Our study demonstrates that CE can reveal the mechanism of the interaction between QDs and heavy metal ions, such as FL quenching.

The popularity of novel nanoparticles coated capillary column has aroused widespread attention of researchers. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with special structure and chemical properties have received great interest in separation sciences. This work presents the investigation of HKUST-1 (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1, called Cu3(BTC)2 or MOF-199) nanoparticles as a new type of coating material for capillary electrochromatography. For the first time, three layers coating (3-LC), five layers coating (5-LC), ten layers coating (10-LC), fifteen layers coating (15-LC), twenty layers coating(20-LC) and twenty-five layers coating (25-LC) capillary columns coated with HKUST-1 nanoparticles were synthesized by covalent bond with in situ, layer-by-layer self-assembly approach. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) indicated that HKUST-1 was successfully grafted on the inner wall of the capillary. The separating performances of 3-LC, 5-LC, 10-LC, 15-LC, 20-LC and 25-LC open tubular (OT) capillary columns were studied with some neutral small organic molecules. The results indicated that the neutral small organic molecules were separated successfully with 10-LC, 15-LC and 20-LC OT capillary columns because of the size selectivity of lattice aperture and hydrophobicity of organic ligands. In addition, 10-LC and 15-LC OT capillary columns showed better performance for the separation of certain phenolic compounds. Furthermore, 10-LC, 15-LC and 20-LC OT capillary columns exhibited good intra-day repeatability with the relative standard deviations (RSDs; %) of migration time and peak areas lying in the range of 0.3-1.2% and 0.5-4.2%, respectively. For inter-day reproducibility, the RSDs of the three OT capillary columns were found to be lying in the range of 0.3-5.5% and 0.3-4.5% for migration time and peak area, respectively. The RSDs of retention times for column-to-column for three batches of 10-LC, 15-LC and 20-LC OT capillary columns were in the range from 2.3% to 7.2%. Moreover, the fabricated 10-LC, 15-LC and 20-LC OT capillary columns exhibited good repeatability and stability for separation, which could be used successively for more than 120 runs with no observable changes on the separation efficiency.

The effector function of natural killer, lymphokine--activated killer cells and T lymphocytes is commonly evaluated by radioactive chromium‑release cytotoxicity assays. In addition to this indirect method, fluorescence assays have been described for the assessment of in vitro cell‑mediated cytotoxicity. In the present study, target cells were stained with 5‑(and‑6)‑carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE), which is a stable integrated fluorescent probe that allows target and effector cells to be distinguished from one another. Staining of target THP‑1 cells with 8 µM CFSE revealed high and stable loading of fluorescence and no effect of the viability of cells. After 4 h of in vitro co‑culture between γδ T cells and CFSE‑labeled infected or uninfected THP‑1 cells, staining with propidium iodide (PI) was performed to distinguish between vital and dead cells. During sample acquisition, target cells were gated on the CFSE positivity and examined for cell death based on the uptake of PI. CFSE and PI double positive cells were recognized as the dead target cells. The percentage of cytotoxicity in the CFSE‑gated cell population was calculated by subtracting the value obtained for non‑specific PI‑positive target cells, which was measured in a control group that did not contain effector cells. The present study describes a simple and convenient assay that is based on the direct quantitative and qualitative analysis of cell damage at a single cell level utilizing a two‑color flow cytometric assay. In conclusion, the flow cytometric‑based assay described in the current study is a simple, sensitive and reliable tool to determine the cytolytic activity of γδ T lymphocytes against mycobacteria. Therefore, the present study may provide valuable information concerning the methods employed to investigate the function of γδ T cells and potentially other lymphocyte subsets.

Background Occupational exposures to ultrafine particles in the plume generated during laser hair removal procedures, the most commonly performed light based cosmetic procedure, have not been thoroughly characterized. Acute and chronic exposures to ambient ultrafine particles have been associated with a number of negative respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. Thus, the aim of this study was to measure airborne concentrations of particles in a diameter size range of 10 nm to 1 μm in procedure rooms during laser hair removal procedures. Methods TSI Model 3007 Condensation Particle Counters were used to quantify the particle count concentrations in the waiting and procedure rooms of a dermatology office. Particle concentrations were sampled before, during, and after laser hair removal procedures, and characteristics of each procedure were noted by the performing dermatologist. This paper describes a colorimetric approach to determine trace amounts of nitrite in water supplies, meat and dairy products using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-modified methyl red ([BMIM]MR) as a colour reagent. The technique capitalises on the catalytic effect of nitrite on the oxidative degradation of [BMIM]MR by potassium bromate in acidic media. The absorbances were proportional to nitrite concentrations in the range of 8.70 × 10−2 to 4.17 μM with a detection limit of 1.64 × 10−2 μM. Compared with the method using methyl red as a colour reagent, 60 times improvement of sensitivity was obtained. Activation energy and the apparent rate constant for the catalytic reaction are 61.11 kJ mol−1 and 1.18 × 104 s−1, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of nitrite in Yellow River water, chicken, and milk with recoveries ranging from 96% to 105%.

This study investigates the adaptive fuzzy fault-tolerant control (FTC) problem for a class of uncertain non-linear strict-feedback systems with unmeasured states. The considered non-linear systems contain unknown continuous functions and do not satisfy the matching condition. The actuator failures under study are types of both abrupt faults and lock-in-place and loss of effectiveness. The fuzzy logic systems are employed to approximate the unknown continuous functions, and a fuzzy state observer is developed and the unmeasured states are obtained. Under the framework of the backstepping design technique and incorporated by the dynamic surface control approach and predefined performance bounds, an adaptive fuzzy FTC method has been presented. From the Lyapunov stability analysis, it is shown that all the signals of the resulting closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error surfaces remain within the prescribed performance bounds in the presence of unknown non-linear actuator faults. The simulation results and comparisons with the previous methods indicate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive fuzzy FTC.

In this study, cobalt doped magnetic composite nanoparticles (Co x Fe 3− x O 4 MNPs) were firstly prepared through a simple and convenient coprecipitation approach. The characterization results from EDX, ICP-AES, TEM, XRD and XPS showed that the cobalt atoms might be located in the lattice position instead of the part of iron atoms. Co x Fe 3− x O 4 MNPs possessed higher peroxidase-like activity comparing with Fe 3 O 4 MNPs, although they were similar in crystal structure, size distribution and morphology. The as-prepared nanomaterials could effectively catalyze the reaction between 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H 2 O 2 under 40 °C within 15 min. Dopamine (DA) has some reducibility due to the existence of phenol hydroxyl group, which results in it can consume H 2 O 2 and cause the blue shallowing of the reaction solution between H 2 O 2 and TMB. A visual, sensitive and simple colorimetric method based on Co x Fe 3− x O 4 MNPs as peroxidase mimetics was developed for detecting DA. Good linear relationship and recoveries for DA were obtained from 0.6 to 8.0 μM and 98.7 to 101.0%, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) of the proposed method was calculated as 0.13 μM. And the relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 4.0%. The visual method was successfully applied to DA detection in Common Yam Rhizome (Shan Yao) and human serum sample.

The considered faults are modeled as both loss of effectiveness and lock-in-place. With the help of fuzzy logic systems to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, the novel adaptive fuzzy faults-tolerant decentralized controllers are constructed by combining the backstepping technique and the dynamic surface control (DSC) approach. It is proved that the proposed control approach can guarantee that all the signals of the resulting closed-loop systems are bounded and the tracking errors converge to a small neighborhood of zero. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the control approach.

This paper discusses the adaptive fuzzy decentralised fault-tolerant control FTC problem for a class of nonlinear large-scale systems in strict-feedback form. The systems under study contain the unknown nonlinearities, unmodelled dynamics, actuator faults and without the direct measurements of state variables. With the help of fuzzy logic systems identifying the unknown functions and a fuzzy adaptive observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states. By using the backstepping design technique and the dynamic surface control approach and combining with the changing supply function technique, a fuzzy adaptive FTC scheme is developed. The main features of the proposed control approach are that it can guarantee the closed-loop system to be input–to-state practically stable, and also has the robustness to the unmodelled dynamics. Moreover, it can overcome the so-called problem of ‘explosion of complexity’ existing in the previous literature. Finally, simulation studies are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Accurate genotyping is important for genetic testing. Sanger sequencing-based typing is the gold standard for genotyping, but it has been underused, due to its high cost and low throughput. In contrast, short-read sequencing provides inexpensive and high-throughput sequencing, holding great promise for reaching the goal of cost-effective and high-throughput genotyping. However, the short-read length and the paucity of appropriate genotyping methods, pose a major challenge. Here, we present RCHSBTreliable, cost-effective and high-throughput sequence based typing pipelinewhich takes short sequence reads as input, but uses a unique variant calling, haploid sequence assembling algorithm, can accurately genotype with greater effective length per amplicon than even Sanger sequencing reads. The RCHSBT method was tested for the human MHC loci HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1, upon 96 samples using Illumina PE 150 reads. Amplicons as long as 950bp were readily genotyped, achieving 100% typing concordance between RCHSBT-called genotypes and genotypes previously called by Sanger sequence. Genotyping throughput was increased over 10 times, and cost was reduced over five times, for RCHSBT as compared with Sanger sequence genotyping. We thus demonstrate RCHSBT to be a genotyping method comparable to Sanger sequencing-based typing in quality, while being more cost-effective, and higher throughput. (C) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A novel luminescence sensing system has been designed for Sudan dyes detection based on the quenched fluorescence (FL) of oleic acid-functionalized Mn-ZnS quantum dots (QDs). The Sudan dyes could quench the fluorescence signal of Mn-ZnS QDs due to the so-called inner filter effect. Herein, it was demonstrated that this facile methodology could offer a rapid, reliable and selective detection of Sudan dyes, and the detection limits of Sudan I, II, III, and IV were 24.6, 32.7, 2.1, and 3.2 ng/mL, respectively. In this work, Sudan dyes were mainly detected in hot chili sauce, sausage, egg and tomato sauce, and Sudan I was chosen as spiked substance owning to its wide use as a coloring matter among Sudan dyes in many industrial and daily products. Furthermore, the recoveries of Sudan I from the standard fortified blank samples were in a range of 93.0-107.0%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were lower than 2.8% (n = 3). It is proved that the proposed control approach can guarantee that all the signals of the resulting closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error between the system output and the reference signal converges to a small neighborhood of zero by appropriate choice of the design parameters. The simulation example and comparisons with the previous method are provided to show the effectiveness of the control approach.

With the help of fuzzy logic systems approximating the unknown nonlinear functions, a fuzzy state observer is designed estimating the unmeasured states. Therefore, the nonlinear filtered signals are incorporated into the backstepping recursive design, and an adaptive fuzzy decentralised output-feedback control scheme is developed. It is proved that the filter system converges to a small neighbourhood of the origin based on appropriate choice of the design parameters. Simulation studies are included illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The adaptive fuzzy faults tolerant control problem is investigated for a single machine bus system with static var compensator (SVC). This design does not require that speed of the generator rotor and susceptance of the overall system are measured, and also does not require that the parameters of the controlled system are known accurately. The considered faults are modeled as both loss of effectiveness and lock-in-place. A fuzzy state observer is designed to estimate the speed of the generator rotor and susceptance, by combining the adaptive backstepping technique with a dynamic surface control (DSC) approach, a novel adaptive fuzzy output-feedback faults tolerant control approach is developed. It is proved that the proposed control approach can guarantee that all the signals in the closed-loop system are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB), and the angle of the generator rotor follows a desired value. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the approach.

A novel coated capillary was prepared by immobilizing graphene oxide (GO) on the fused-silica capillary (75 μm i.d.) which was derivatized by 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (APTMS). The bare capillary, APTMS modified capillary (NH2-capillary) and GO coated capillary (GO-capillary) were characterized by streaming potentials (SPs), fluorescence microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the capillary was successfully modified with GO sheets via covalent bonding and electrostatic effect. Compared with bare capillary, greater separation efficiency was achieved by GO-capillary column as a result of the increasing interactions between the small organic molecules and the inner wall of the GO-capillary column originated from the π-π electrostatic stacking. For three consecutive runs, the intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of migration time and peak areas were 0.6-4.3% and 2.8-9.3%, respectively. The inter-day relative standard deviations of migration time and peak areas were 0.2-8.3% and 4.5-9.6%. Additionally, one GO-capillary column could be used for more than 100 runs with no observable changes on the separation efficiency.

A simplified method for synthesis of polyacrylic acid-bound iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PAA NPs) was reported. The as-prepared nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, FT-IR, VSM and XRD. Characterization results indicated that PAA was successfully introduced onto the surface of Fe3O4 and did not cause any changes in magnetic property. The Fe3O4@PAA NPs were used to adsorb rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a model basic dye pollutant from aqueous solution. Kinetics data and adsorption isotherms were better fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached at about 20 min, showing that the as-prepared adsorbent exhibited extremely rapid adsorption rate. The aqueous solution of the Yellow River was chosen as the test sample, and the results showed that the magnetic adsorbent was efficient for the removal of the basic dye in the real sample.

Bifunctional Fe3O4@MgSiO3 sub-microspheres with superparamagnetic property and high affinity toward metal ions were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method using Fe3O4@SiO2 as a self-template, and well characterized by means of TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM and N2 adsorption isotherms. The as-prepared Fe3O4@MgSiO3 sub-microspheres were then assessed as the adsorbent for Pb2+ removal in water, and various factors influencing the adsorption of Pb2+ were investigated including pH, equilibrium time and initial metal ion concentration. The results indicated that Fe3O4@MgSiO3 sub-microspheres had a mean diameter of 220 nm and high superparamagnetic cores, which endowed them with useful magnetic responsivity. Moreover, the large specific surface was beneficial for their strong affinity toward toxic metal ions. The pseudo-second-order equation could describe well the adsorption kinetics with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ was calculated to be 242.1 mg/g based on Langmuir model. Furthermore, the as-prepared Fe3O4@MgSiO3 showed an acceptable reusability using NaOH or Mg2+ solution as the desorbing agent. All information gives an indication that the as-prepared sub-microspheres show their potential as the adsorbent for highly efficient removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention because of their permanent nanoscale porosity and higher surface area compared to zeolites as well as robustness. COFs have great potential in several fields such as hydrogen storage, gas separation, and catalysis. However, COFs have not yet been applied in capillary electrochromatography. Herein, covalent organic frameworks-LZU1 (COF-LZU1) was used as the stationary phase in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography for the first time. Compared to the monoliths used in electrochromatography, the preparation technique of a COF-LZU1-coated capillary was simple and practical. The baseline separation of model analytes including alkylbenzenes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and anilines by the COF-LZU1-coated capillary was achieved based on the size selectivity of COF-LZU1 porous structure and hydrophobic interactions between the model analytes and organic ligands of COF-LZU1. The load capacity of the COF-LZU1-coated capillary for naphthalene was 0.6mg/mL. For three consecutive runs, the intraday relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.4-2.6% for the migration time and 2.7-8.7% for the peak area. The interday RSDs were 1.3-3.9% for the migration time and 3.7-9.7% for the peak area. The column-to-column reproducibility of migration time was in the range 1.0-3.9%. Moreover, the coated capillary was used for >300 runs with no changes in the separation efficiency. Thus, COFs have great potential in capillary electrochromatography and may provide a new method for chromatographic separation.

The health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the most concerning organic pollutants, depend not only on the locations and strengths of emission sources, but also on individual susceptibility. Moreover, trans-boundary transport makes them a global concern. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the global health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air is presented. Model resolution is critical in exposure modelling. Globally, incremental lifetime lung cancer risk (ILCR) induced by ambient PAH exposure is 3.1 × 10(-5). If the individual susceptibility was not taken into consideration, the overall risk would be underestimated by 55% and the proportion of highly vulnerable population would be underestimated by more than 90%. Emphasizing on individual susceptibility, our study provides an instrumental revision of current risk assessment methodology. In terms of lung cancer risk, the most important sources are combustion of biomass fuels (40%) and fossil fuels (14%) in the residential/commercial sector, coke (13%) and aluminium (12%) production, and motor vehicles (9%). PAHs can travel long distance globally especially within the Eurasian continent. Still, the risk is dominantly contributed by local.
