A 2-dimensional tungsten disulfide–acetylene black (WS2–AB) composite is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method to achieve excellent electrochemical properties for applications as a DNA biosensor. The biosensor is fabricated based on the Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and WS2–AB composite modified electrode, which subsequently is used to couple with a capture probe by an Au–S bond, then modified with target DNA, auxiliary DNA and bio-H1–bio-H2 (H1–H2) to perform hybridization chain reaction for signal amplification. Herein, two DNA hairpins H1 and H2 are opened by the recognition probe. The nicked double helices from hybridization chain reaction are used to immobilize horseradish peroxidase enzymes via biotin–avidin reaction, which produces signal-amplification detection of target DNA through the catalytic reaction of the hydrogenperoxide + hydroquinone system. Under optimum conditions, the as-prepared biosensor shows a good linear relationship between the current value and logarithm of the target DNA concentration ranging from 0.001 pM to 100 pM and a detection limit as low as 0.12 fM. Moreover, the fabricated biosensor exhibits good selectivity to differentiate the one-base mismatched DNA sequence. This work will open a pathway for ultrasensitive detection of other biorecognition events and gene-related diseases based on layered WS2–AB and hybridization chain reaction.

In this work, a sandwich-type electrochemical biosensing platform is developed based on carbon sphere-MoS2 (CS-MoS2) and target recycling amplification of catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) strategy for ultrasensitive determination of microRNA (miRNA). The CS-MoS2 is prepared and used as sensing substrate, which shows high specific surface area, enhanced stability and good dispersibility. The capture probe is first modified on Au nanoparticles/CS-MoS2 modified glassy carbon electrode through Au-S band, and hairpin DNA1 (H1) then reacts with it and unfolds its loop domain by hybridizing with target miRNA-21. The opened H1 subsequently assembles with biotin labeled hairpin DNA 2 (H2) to displace the target. The liberated miRNA-21 is free and backs to the original solution to proceed next circulation, resulting in the generation of large amounts of H1–H2 duplex. Massive signal indicators horseradish peroxidase are then immobilized on electrode, and catalyze hydrogenperoxide + hydroquinone (H2O2 + HQ) system to produce a strong electrochemical response. The proposed assay benefits from advantages of sandwich-type structure, favorable electrochemical properties of CS-MoS2 and CHA target recycling amplification strategy. Therefore, it exhibits a wide linear relation between 1 × 10−16 and 1 × 10−10 M with a low detection limit of 1.6 × 10−17 M for miRNA-21 detection.

A novel competitive aptasensor for thrombin detection is developed by using a tetrahedral DNA (T-DNA) probe and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) signal amplification. Sulfur and nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide (SN-rGO) is firstly prepared by a simple reflux method and used for supporting substrate of biosensor. Then, T-DNA probe is modified on the electrode by Au-S bond and a competition is happened between target thrombin and the complementary DNA (cDNA) of aptamer. The aptamer binding to thrombin forms an aptamer-target conjugate and make the cDNA remained, and subsequently hybridizes with the vertical domain of T-DNA. Finally, the cDNAs trigger HCR, which results in a great current response by the catalysis of horseradish peroxidase to the hydrogen peroxide + hydroquinone system. For thrombin detection, the proposed biosensor shows a wide linearity range of 10-13-10-8M and a low detection limit of 11.6fM (S/N = 3), which is hopeful to apply in biotechnology and clinical diagnosis.

MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) play multiple crucial regulating roles in cell which can regulate one third of protein-coding genes. MiRNAs participate in the developmental and physiological processes of human body, while their aberrant adjustment will be more likely to trigger diseases such as cancers, kidney disease, central nervous system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, viral infections and so on. What's worse, for the detection of miRNAs, their small size, high sequence similarity, low abundance and difficult extraction from cells impose great challenges in the analysis. Hence, it's necessary to fabricate accurate and sensitive biosensing platform for miRNAs detection. Up to now, researchers have developed many signal-amplification strategies for miRNAs detection, including hybridization chain reaction, nuclease amplification, rolling circle amplification, catalyzed hairpin assembly amplification and nanomaterials based amplification. These methods are typical, feasible and frequently used. In this review, we retrospect recent advances in signal amplification strategies for detecting miRNAs and point out the pros and cons of them. Furthermore, further prospects and promising developments of the signal-amplification strategies for detecting miRNAs are proposed.

In this work, a sensitive, universal and reusable electrochemical biosensor based on stannic oxide nanocorals-graphene hybrids (SnO2 NCs-Gr) is developed for target DNA detection by using two kinds of DNA enzymes for signal amplification through an autonomous cascade DNA duplication strategy. A hairpin probe is designed composing of a projecting part at the 3'-end as identification sequence for target, a recognition site for nicking endonuclease, and an 18-carbon shim to stop polymerization process. The designed DNA duplication-incision-replacement process is handled by KF polymerase and endonuclease, then combining with gold nanoparticles as signal carrier for further signal amplification. In the detection system, the electrochemical-chemical-chemical procedure, which uses ferrocene methanol, tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine and l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate as oxidoreduction neurogen, deoxidizer and zymolyte, separately, is applied to amplify detection signal. Benefiting from the multiple signal amplification mechanism, the proposed sensor reveals a good linear connection between the peak current and logarithm of analyte concentration in range of 0.0001-1 × 10-11molL-1 with a detection limit of 1.25 × 10-17molL-1 (S/N=3). This assay also opens one promising strategy for ultrasensitive determination of other biological molecules for bioanalysis and biomedicine diagnostics.

In this work, we report an ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor for microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) detection by using a competitive RNA–RNA hybridization configuration. A biotinylated miRNA of the self-same sequence with the target miRNA is mixed with the samples, and allowed competition with the target miRNA for a thiolated RNA probe immobilized onto a tungsten diselenide (WSe2) nanosheet modified electrode. Thereafter the current response is obtained by forming the hybridized biotinylated miRNA with streptavidin–horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugates to catalyze the H2O2 + hydroquinone (HQ) system. Benefiting from the high specific surface area of WSe2 nanosheets, the competitive hybridization configuration and the signal amplification of the H2O2 + HQ detection system, the proposed assay exhibits a wide linear range of 0.0001–100 pM towards target miRNA with a detection limit of 0.06 fM (S/N = 3), and shows excellent discrimination ability for base-mismatched miRNA sequences. Therefore, the designed platform has promising prospects for the detection of miRNA in biomedical research and early clinical diagnosis.

Sensitive detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) plays an important role in the field of food safety control. In this study, we are reporting for the first time an electrochemical biosensor which employs the integration of MoSe 2 nanoflowers, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), aptamer and the guanine-rich complementary DNA sequence for the sensitive detection of OTA. MoSe 2 nanoflowers are prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and used as a promising sensing platform based on its large surface area. The methylene blue is used as a tracer and a guanine-rich complementary DNA sequence is designed to bind with the unbound OTA aptamer for signal amplification. The aptamer is immobilized on the AuNPs/MoSe 2 modified electrode surface through Au–S interaction. Since OTA can competitively bind with the aptamer due to their high affinity, the presence of OTA will induce the decrease of guanine-rich DNA on the electrode surface, in turn reduces the signal of methylene blue which can specifically adsorb to the guanine units of DNA. The proposed assay shows a good linear relationship within the range of 0.0001–1 nM with a detection limit of 0.08 pM for OTA. The developed biosensor has been applied to determine OTA concentration in wine samples.

A highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor for detection of platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) is developed by using Se-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-graphene hybrids as electrode supporting substrate, hemin/G-quadruplex as trace labels and Y-shaped DNA-aided target recycling as signal magnifier. The aptamer-containing hairpin probes were first immobilized on the electrode. When target PDGF-BB was added, the aptamer binded PDGF-BB to trigger catalytic assembly of two other hairpins to form many G-quadruplex Y-junction DNA structures, which released PDGF-BB to again bind the intact aptamer to initiate another assembly cycle. G-quadruplex/hemin complexes were produced when hemin was added to generate substantially amplified current output. The developed assay showed a linear range toward PDGF-BB from 0.1 pM to 10 nM with a detection limit of 27 fM (S/N = 3). The method showed excellent specificity and repeatability, and could be expediently applied for sensitive detection of other molecules by simply changing the aptamers.

Genetic modification of Bt rice may affect straw decomposition and soil carbon pool under flood conditions. This study aims to assess the effects of cry gene transformation in rice on the residue decomposition and fate of C from residues under flooded conditions. A decomposition experiment was set up using 13C-enriched rice straws from transgenic and nontransgenic Bt rice to evaluate the soil C dynamics and CH4 or CO2 emission rates in the root and non-root zones. The concentrations and stable carbon isotope compositions of the soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), CH4, and CO2 of the root and non-root zones were determined from 7 to 110 days after rice straw incorporation. Rice straw incorporation into soil significantly increased the SOC, DOC, and MBC concentrations and the CH4 and CO2 emission rates. The percentage of 13C-SOC remaining in the root zone was significantly lower than that in the non-root zone with rice straw decomposition. The DOC and MBC concentrations significantly increased in both the root and non-root zones between 0 and 80 days after rice straw incorporation. However, no significant differences were found after Bts (Bt rice straw added into soil) and Cks (nontransgenic Bt rice straw added into soil) incorporation in the root and non-root zones. This result may be attributed to the priming effects of sufficient oxygen and nutrients on straw degradation in the root zone. Bt gene insertion did not affect the SOC, DOC, and MBC concentrations and the CH4 and CO2 emission rates in both the root and non-root zones. However, rice straw incorporation and root exudation significantly increased the SOC, DOC, and MBC concentrations and the CH4 and CO2 emission rates.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor for detecting microRNAs is fabricated based on hollow molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) microcubes. Duplex-specific nuclease, enzyme and electrochemical-chemical-chemical redox cycling are used for signal amplification. Hollow MoS2 microcubes constructed by ultrathin nanosheets are synthesized by a facile template-assisted strategy and used as supporting substrate. For biosensor assembling, biotinylated ssDNA capture probes are first immobilized on Au nanoparticles (AuNPs)/MoS2 modified electrode in order to combine with streptavidin-conjugated alkaline phosphatase (SA-ALP). When capture probes hybridize with miRNAs, duplex-specific nuclease cleaves the formative duplexes. At the moment, the biotin group strips from the electrode surface and SA-ALP is incapacitated to attach onto electrode. Then, ascorbic acids induce the electrochemical-chemical-chemical redox cycling to produce electrochemical response in the presence of ferrocene methanol and tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine. Under optimum conditions, the proposed biosensor shows a good linear relationship between the current variation and logarithm of the microRNAs concentration ranging from 0.1fM to 0.1pM with a detection limit of 0.086fM (S/N=3). Furthermore, the biosensor is successfully applied to detect target miRNA-21 in human serum samples.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor for microRNA (miRNA) is developed based on tungsten oxide-graphene composites coupling with catalyzed hairpin assembly target recycling and enzyme signal amplification. WO3-Gr is prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and then coupled with gold nanoparticles to act as a sensing platform. The thiol-terminated capture probe H1 is immobilized on electrode through Au-S interaction. In the presence of target miRNA, H1 opens its hairpin structure by hybridization with target miRNA. This hybridization can be displaced from the structure by another stable biotinylated hairpin DNA (H2), and target miRNA is released back to the sample solution for next cycle. Thus, a large amount of H1-H2 duplex is produced after the cyclic process. At this point, a lot of signal indicators streptavidin-conjugated alkaline phosphatase (SA-ALP) are immobilized on the electrode by the specific binding of avidin-biotin. Then, thousands of ascorbic acid, which is the enzymatic product of ALP, induces the electrochemical-chemical-chemical redox cycling to produce a strongly electrochemical response in the presence of ferrocene methanol and tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the established biosensor can detect target miRNA down to 0.05fM (S/N=3) with a linear range from 0.1fM to 100pM, and discriminate target miRNA from mismatched miRNA with a high selectivity.

The comprehensive assessment of environmental quality is useful for comparison of environmental quality and identification of pollution trends. In the comprehensive assessment methods, many studies proved that grey clustering method is accurate and effective. However, the zero-weight problem occurs in the traditional grey clustering method (TGCM). This flaw may lead to the assessment result distortion. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a modified grey clustering method (MGCM) in which the linear whitening functions in the traditional grey clustering method is replaced by exponential functions. The modified method was applied to assess water quality of four monitoring sections in the Yuhang section of the Tiaoxi River. Then, the results were compared with those obtained with the TGCM. The comparisons show that solving the zero-weight problem can lead to different assessment results and the MGCM is effective to solve the zero-weight problem. The MGCM is more accurate than the TGCM.

A field experiment was conducted to remove the potential eutrophication effect of N and P from rural wastewater (RW) during the whole rice growing season of 2010. Commercial fertilizer and RW were applied to furnish 40 kg P ha-1except CK. Results showed TN concentration of the floodwater in the paddy wetland system decreased quickly after transplanting, rosed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) after two N topdressings, and then decreased gradually as the following sequences: SW > GW > DW > BW > CK. Total P (TP) concentration had significantly declined after P application, from October 15 there were no significant increases in TP concentration in the floodwater. Meanwhile, the yield for CK was significantly less (P ≤0.05) than SW, GW, DW, and BW, with the yield of BW significantly greater (P ≤ 0.05) than other treatments. It is feasible to remove N and P from RW by the paddy wetland system and can be widely used to improve the yield of rice.

Objective: To study the oxidative stress and antioxidative response of Cinnamomum camphora seedlings exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) fumigation. Methods: Measurements were made up of the growth, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation of one-year-old C. camphora seedlings exposed to NO2 (0.1, 0.5, and 4 μl/L) fumigation in open top chambers over a period of 60 d. Results: After the first 30 d, 0.5 and 4.0 μl/L NO2 showed insignificant effects on the growth of C. camphora seedlings. However, exposure to 0.5 and 4.0 μl/L NO2 for 15 d significantly reduced their chlorophyll content (P

In-situ ammonium removal from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is an attractive method due to its economic advantages. In this study, two simulated MSW bioreactors with different degrees of initial bio-stabilization were utilized to investigate the effects of intermittent aeration mode and the addition of activated sludge on the removal of ammonium. The results showed that up to 90% of ammonium could be removed and the amount of NOx—N produced was less than 1% of NH4+-N removed in both reactors. The pH values increased rapidly and finally arrived at a high level of 8.5—8.8. The efficiency of ammonium removal was improved by increasing the continuous aeration time, but it was not affected by the addition of activated sludge. A portion of liquid escaped from the reactors in the form of vapour, and as high as 195—258 mg L—1 of NH4 +-N was detected in the vapour collector. According to calculation, nitrification was inhibited by the high level of free ammonia in the bioreactors. As a result, air stripping was enhanced and became the primary pathway of ammonium removal. Therefore, controlling free ammonia concentration was essential in ammonium removal from the aerated MSW bioreactor.

Photosynthetic assimilation of CO2 is a primary source of carbon in soil and root exudates and can influence the community dynamics of rhizosphere organisms. Thus, if carbon partitioning is affected in transgenic crops, rhizosphere microbial communities may also be affected. In this study, the temporal effects of gene transformation on carbon partitioning in rice and rhizosphere microbial communities were investigated under greenhouse conditions using the 13C pulse-chase labeling method and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. The 13C contents in leaves of transgenic (Bt) and nontransgenic (Ck) rice were significantly different at the seedling, booting and heading stages. There were no detectable differences in 13C distribution in rice roots and rhizosphere microorganisms at any point during rice development. Although a significantly lower amount of Gram-positive bacterial PLFAs and a higher amount of Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs were observed in Bt rice rhizosphere as compared with Ck at all plant development stages, there were no significant differences in the amount of individual 13C-PLFA between Bt and Ck rhizospheres at any growing stage. These findings indicate that the insertion of cry1Ab and marker genes into rice had no persistent or adverse effect on the photosynthate distribution in rice or the microbial community composition in its rhizosphere.

Use of transgenic crops, including those expressing the insecticidal Cry protein from Bt, is increasing at a rapid rate in worldwide. Field and laboratory studies of transgenic Bt crops have been carried out to detect the persistence and activity of the Cry protein in soil and its effect on soil microorganisms to assess their risks to environment. However, there were few studies that evaluate the seasonal effects of Bt rice on rhizosphere soil microbial communities compared to those of insecticides commonly applied in paddy soil for the control of lepidopteran insects. In this study, seasonal effects of transgenic rice expressing the Cry1Ab insecticidal protein active against lepidoperan pests and the insecticide triazophos [3-(o,o-diethyl)-1-phenyl thiophosphoryl-1,2,4-triazol] on soil enzyme activities and microbial communities were compared under field conditions. During a 2-year field study, rhizosphere soil samples of transgenic-Bt rice (Bt), non-Bt parental rice (Ck) and non-Bt parental rice with triazophos (Ckp) applied were taken at four stages in the rice developmental cycle: seedling, booting, heading and maturing. Microbial processes were investigated by measuring different biochemical activities including those involved in C and P cycling. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analyses were used to compare rhizosphere microbial compositions. Some occasional and inconsistent effects of the application of triazophos on the bacterial composition in the rhizosphere soil of rice plant were found at the booting and heading stages as compared with that of transgenic-Bt rice. There were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) in phosphatase activity, dehydrogenase activity, respiration, methanogenesis or fungal community composition in rhizosphere soil between Bt, Ck and Ckp over the rice cropping cycle. However, seasonal variations in the selected enzyme activities and microbial community composition in the rhizosphere soil of Bt, Ck and Ckp were clearly detected. These results suggested that the changes in rhizophere soil microbial community composition associated with the crop growth stage overweighed the application of triazophos and the cry1Ab gene transformation. KMD1 (Bt) rice expressing the cry1Ab gene had no measurable adverse effect on the key microbial processes or microbial community composition in rhizophere soil over 2 years of rice cropping.

The potential influences of cadmium (Cd) on the biochemical processes of the soil nitrogen (N) cycle, along with the dynamics of ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification processes in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere (bulk soil), respectively, were investigated in a Cd-stressed system during an entire soybean growing season. In terms of Cd pollution at the seedling stage, the ammonifying bacteria proved to be the most sensitive microorganisms, whereas the effects of Cd on denitrification were not obvious. Following the growth of soybeans, the influences of Cd on ammonification in the bulk soil were: toxic impacts at the seedling stage, stimulatory effects during the early flowering stage, and adaptation to the pollutant during the podding and ripening stages. Although nitrification and denitrification in the bulk soil decreased throughout the entire growth cycle, positive adaptation to Cd stress was observed during the ripening stage. Moreover, during the ripening stage, denitrification in the bulk soil under high Cd treatment (20 mg kg −1 ) was even higher than that in the control, indicating a probable change in the ecology of the denitrifying microbes in the Cd-stressed system. Changes in the activity of microbes in the rhizosphere following plant growth were similar to those in the non-rhizosphere in Cd treatments; however, the tendency of change in the rhizosphere seemed to be more moderate. This suggested that there was some mitigation of Cd stress in the rhizosphere.

Phytoremediation is a relatively new approach to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the environment. When plants are grown under pyrene treatment, they respond by synthesizing a set of protective proteins. To learn more about protein changes in response to pyrene treatment, we extracted total proteins from the leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) 1 week after pyrene treatment. The proteins extracted were separated with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. In total, approximately 54 protein spots were found by comparing gels from treated and control groups. According to the isoelectric point, molecular weight, and abundance of these protein spots, 20 pyrene-induced proteins were found to have changed abundance. Of these, 15 protein spots were increased and five protein spots were newly appeared in pyrene-treated plant leaves. Six model upregulated protein spots of different molecular weights were excised from the gels and subjected to trypsin digestion followed by peptide separation using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Peptide masses were used to search the matrix-science database for protein identification. Two of the proteins were identified on the basis of the homology of their peptide profiles with existing protein sequences as pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase and the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit. These proteins are involved in the regulation of carbohydrate and energy metabolism. The present study gives new insights into the pyrene stress response in maize leaves and demonstrates the power of the proteomic approach in phytoremediation of PAHs.

To evaluate the public health risk of exposure to microcystins in fish food in China, the distribution pattern of microcystin-LR and microcystin-RR in various organs (liver, intestine, kidney, muscle and lipid) of the dominant freshwater phytoplanktivorous fish Hypophthalmichthys molitrix in Hangzhou, China's Tiesha River was investigated with the method of HPLC-ESI-MS analysis. The distribution of microcystins was different in the fish organs and the major total microcystins (microcystin-LR and microcystin-RR) were present in the intestines (6.49 micro g/g fresh weight), followed by the livers (4.52 micro g/g fresh weight) and the muscles (2.86 micro g/g fresh weight). Microcystins were detected in kidneys (1.35 micro g/g fresh weight), but not detected in lipid. The results suggested that the mean daily intake from fish was 0.03 micro g/kg body weight which was very close to the recommended WHO tolerable daily intake (TDI) level of 0.04 micro g/kg body weight per day, and local people were warned they may have health risk if they consumed fish from the river.

To study Pseudomonas putida CZ1, having high tolerance to copper and zinc on the removal of toxic metals from aqueous solutions, the biosorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) by living and nonliving P. putida CZ1 were studied as functions of reaction time, initial pH of the solution and metal concentration. It was found that the optimum pH for Zn(II) removal by living and nonliving cells was 5.0, while it was 5.0 and 4.5, respectively, for Cu(II) removal. At the optimal conditions, metal ion biosorption was increased as the initial metal concentration increased. The adsorption data with respect to both metals provide an excellent fit to the Langmuir isotherm. The binding capacity of living cells is significantly higher than that of nonliving cells at tested conditions. It demonstrated that about 40-50% of the metals were actively taken up by P. putida CZ1, with the remainder being passively bound to the bacterium. Moreover, desorption efficiency of Cu(II) and Zn(II) by living cells was 72.5 and 45.6% under 0.1M HCl and it was 95.3 and 83.8% by nonliving cells, respectively. It may be due to Cu(II) and Zn(II) uptake by the living cells enhanced by intracellular accumulation.

The role of rhizosphere bacteria in facilitating the solubility of copper (Cu) in contaminated soil and Cu accumulation in plant were studied. The bacteria strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of Elsholtzia splendens, a Cu accumulator growing on Tonglu Mountain copper mines. After the sandy soils containing 237 mg kg−1 were incubated with the bacteria strains, it was indicated that rhizosphere microbes played an important role in influencing the availability of water-soluble Cu in soils. Soils had greater concentrations of water-extractable Cu compared with axenic soils inoculated with different bacterial strains. Further evidence for bacterial facilitation of increased solubility of Cu in the soil was obtained using the antibiotic ampicillin (0.1 mg g−1). There were 36% decreases in Cu concentration in the presence of bacterial strain MS12 and ampicillin together compared with bacterial inoculation alone. Different bacterial strains had different abilities on soil water-soluble Cu. To achieve the highest rates of plant Cu accumulation, it was necessary for bacteria to be present in the rhizosphere of E. splendens. Inoculated plants supplied with 20 μmol L−1 CuSO4 had significantly greater concentrations of Cu in shoots and roots than uninoculated plants and bacterial strain MS2 was the most effective strain in promoting plant Cu uptake. There were 2.2-fold and 2.5-fold increases in Cu accumulation in the shoots and roots of plants inoculated with strain MS2 compared to axenic controls. Furthermore, when ampicillin and the bacterial strains were added together to the nutrient solution, the Cu concentrations in roots and shoots of ampicillin-treated plants were lower than those in inoculated plants. When ampicillin was added to the nutrient solution, Cu accumulation was inhibited by about 24–44% in shoots and 20–44% in roots. Biological removal of ammonia was investigated using two types of packing materials, compost and sludge in laboratory-scale biofilters (8 l reactor volume). The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of unit systems packed with these supports in terms of ammonia emissions treatment. Experimental tests and measurements included analysis of removal efficiency, metabolic products, and results of long-term operation. The inlet concentration of ammonia applied was 20–200 mg m−3. The ammonia loading rates of 24.9–566 g NH3 m−3 d−1 to compost biofilter (BF3) and 24.9–472 g NH3 m−3 d−1 to sludge biofilter (BF4) were applied for 210 days, respectively. Removal efficiencies of the compost and sludge biofilters were in the range of 97–99% and 95–99%, respectively when the inlet concentration of ammonia was below 110 mg m−3, and the maximum elimination capacities were 288 and 243 g NH3 m−3 d−1, respectively. However, removal efficiency and elimination capacity of both biofilters significantly decreased as the inlet concentration increased to above 110 mg m−3. By using kinetic analysis, the maximum removal rate of ammonia, Vm, and the saturation constant, Ks, were determined for both packing materials and the value of Vm for compost was found to be larger. Periodic analysis of the biofilter packing materials showed the accumulation of the nitrification product NO3- in the operation. During the experiment, the pressure drops measured were very low. The use of both packing materials requires neither nutritive aqueous solution nor buffer solution.

Geogenic, as well as anthropogenic heavy metals from distant sources, gradually increase the level of toxic metals in natural environments and these will be increasingly taken up by plants and transferred further up the food chain. To control any detrimental environmental impacts of soil contaminants, it is desirable to investigate the solubility and mobility of soil chemical contaminants under land-based agricultural systems. In this paper, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the effects of rhizospheric dynamics on the bioavailability of lead. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and Ultisol were used as the test materials. The results showed NH4OAc extractable Pb in rice rhizosphere was much higher than in bulk soil, which meant that the activation processes in the rhizosphere was significant and the amount of bioavailable Pb increased. The distribution of extractable Pb at a distance of 0–10 mm from the root compartment, however, varied and had a little depletion compared to that in the rhizosphere. The significant difference of Pb forms between the rhizosphere and bulk soil further demonstrated the root-induced changes of lead bioavailability in the rhizosphere might also be related to the various levels of Pb treatment and the simultaneity of Cd. It was observed the accumulation of soluble plus exchangeable Pb (SE-Pb) in the 500 mg kg−1 Pb treatment, and relatively stronger fixation of Pb to oxides in the 250 mg kg−1 Pb treatment. The activation of SE-Pb in rice rhizosphere was weaker in the 5 mg kg−1 Cd treatment and stronger in the 10 mg kg−1 Cd treatment than that in the treatment without Cd. The activation of lead in the rhizosphere of Oryza sativa L., suggested a potential risk of heavy metal accumulation and phytotoxicity in plants and soil ecosystem.

Tissue concentrations of some mineral elements appeared to be influenced by plant Fe status. The influence of Fe deficiency on Cu uptake and accumulation in Commelina communis , and the relationship between Cu uptake and root Fe(III) chelate reductase (FCR) activity were investigated in this study. The results showed that Cu accumulation in C. communis was increased with the drop of Fe concentration in nutrient solution. Cu uptake in C. communis was significantly enhanced by Fe deficiency. Cu uptake in Fe-deficient plants were still higher than that of Fe-sufficient plants when P-type ATPase inhibitor Na 3 VO 4 was added in the solution, which demonstrated that Fe deficiency induced stimulation of the plasma membrane H + -ATPase did not play a role in the enhanced Cu uptake. Fe and Cu deficiency could induced root Fe(III) chelate reductase activity in C. communis . Both Fe(III) chelate reductase activity aud Cu concentration in roots inhibited distinctly by cycloheximide, a kind of protein synthesis inhibitor. In the time course of Fe deficiency, there simultaneously appeared Cu concentration and FCR activity peaks in roots at day 9. All above evidences demonstrated Cu uptake aud accumulation in C. communis were probably related to the root FCR activity.

To determine whether chemical additions can be used to reduce sludge production in biological wastewater treatment, 3,3′,4′,5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TCS) was added to activated sludge cultures as a metabolic uncoupler. Batch tests confirmed that TCS is an effective chemical uncoupler in reducing the sludge yield at concentrations greater than 1.0 mg dm−3; a TCS concentration of 1.0 mg dm−3 reduced sludge yield by approximately 50%. Substrate removal capability and effluent nitrogen concentration were not affected adversely by the presence of TCS when dosed every other day in a range of 2.0–3.6 mg dm−3 during the 40-day operation of activated sludge batch cultures. Such sludge growth reduction was associated with the enhancement of microbial activities in terms of the specific oxygen uptake rate and dehydrogenase activity. Sludge settleability of the treated and control samples was qualitatively comparable and not significantly different. Filamentous bacteria continued to grow in sludge flocs only in the control reactor at the end of the 40-day trial. These results suggest that TCS treatment of activated sludge systems may reduce excess sludge yield. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry

A research was done to study the Pb adsorption by the root cell wall of tea plant extracted from Longjing 43. It was indicated that the amount of Pb adsorbed by the root cell wall increased with augment of the initial pH of the solution under acidic condition, dramatically as the pH ranged from 2.0 to 4.5. The amount of Pb increased with the Pb concentration in the solution at pH 4.5, which could be well fitted by the Freundlich adsorption model. The adsorbed Pb reached 9.7 mg x g(-1) under equilibrium condition, 90% of which was adsorbed in 320 minutes, while 50% was desorbed in 60 minutes based on the desorption dynamic curve. The kinetics of both adsorption and desorption could be well described by a second-order rate equation. The amount of absorbed Pb by the root cell wall varied after modified treatments, reducing by 51.1% after esterifing, 41.3% with pectinase, and 10.8% via aminomethylation, suggesting that carboxyl, galacturonic acid, pectin and amino, to some extent, all took part in the Pb adsorption by the root cell wall.

In this paper, a treatment process consisted of UASB, step-fed sequencing batch reactor (SFSBR) and magnesium ammonium phosphate precipitation reactor (MAP) was built to treat the large scale swine wastewater, which aimed at overcoming drawbacks of conventional anaerobic-aerobic treatment process and SBR treatment process, such as the low denitrification efficiency, high operating costs and high nutrient losses and so on. Based on the treatment process, a pilot engineering was constructed. It was concluded from the experiment results that the removal efficiency of COD, NH4(+) -N and TP reached 95.1%, 92.7% and 88.8%, the recovery rate of NH4(+) -N and TP by MAP process reached 23.9% and 83.8%, the effluent quality was superior to the discharge standard of pollutants for livestock and poultry breeding (GB 18596-2001), mass concentration of COD, TN, NH4(+) -N, TP and SS were not higher than 135, 116, 43, 7.3 and 50 mg x L(-1) respectively. The process developed was reliable, kept self-balance of carbon source and alkalinity, reached high nutrient recovery efficiency. And the operating cost was equal to that of the traditional anaerobic-aerobic treatment process. So the treatment process could provide a high value of application and dissemination and be fit for the treatment pf the large scale swine wastewater in China.

Soil microbial indicator is one of the important biological indicators in evaluating the extent of soil contamination. In recent years, with the development of molecular biology, many studies have focused on the ecological functions of soil microorganisms by using metagenomics, metatranscriptome and metaproteomics. Relative to metagenomics and metatranscriptome, soil metaproteomics aims to investigate the spatial and temporal changes of the proteins extracted from soil as well as the functional components of soil microbial genomic expression products, which is more conclusive to explore the ecological functions of soil microbes and their roles in soil pollutants transportation and transformation. Therefore, soil metaproteomics has great potential in soil pollution assessment. Currently, soil metaproteomics is still at its infancy stage, while soil protein extraction method is one of the key factors restraining the potential application of soil metaproteomics. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantage of soil metaproteomics in soil pollution assessment were reviewed, with the focus on the comparison of different soil protein extraction methods. In combining with case studies, the feasibility and limits of soil proteins as an indicator for soil pollution assessment were analyzed. In addition, the future research perspectives on the development of soil metaproteomics were discussed.

Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) is an important process of nitrogen cycle, with great potential for the practical use in removing nitrogen from the wastewater containing high concentration ammonium. However, the presence of high concentration organic carbon source is considered unfavorable to anammox. Coupling anammox and denitrification under the presence of organic carbon source could be a useful technique for removing both nitrogen and carbon. This paper reviewed the mechanisms of anammox-denitrification coupling process, functional microbial groups, initiation of the coupling process and its control, and related environmental affecting factors. The future research prospects and potential applications of anammox-denitrification coupling process in wastewater treatment were discussed.

Solid state phosphorous is an important phosphorus speciation controlling the phosphorous bioavailability and mobility in the environment. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, with its unique advantage of being a non-destructive method in identifying the local chemical information of target element at molecular level in situ, has become one of the frontier technologies for characterizing the speciation of chemical substances and clarifying the microscopic mechanisms of chemical reactions, attracting extensive attention in the field of environmental chemistry. This paper briefly introduced the basic theory of phosphorus XANES spectroscopy, summarized the applications of XANES spectroscopy in the researches of solid state phosphorus speciation in minerals, soils, and organic fertilizers, and analyzed the challenges and prospects of the applications of XANES spectroscopy in identifying the solid state phosphorus speciation in the environmental samples. It was pointed out that XANES spectroscopy should combine with other microscopic spectroscopic techniques and macroscopic analytical methods, complementing each other, to provide a comprehensive and effective technical support for the research of the speciation characterization and transformation mechanisms of phosphorus in the environment.

A hydroponics experiment combined with subcellular fractionation and sequential extraction was conducted to study the Pb concentration in different organs of two tea plant varieties (Longjing 43 and Yingshuang) and the Pb subcellular distribution and chemical forms in the roots of the varieties. Under Pb stress, the root system of the two varieties had different features in morphology. With the increasing concentration of Pb in culture solution, the Pb concentration in Longjing 43 young leaves increased, but that in Yingshuang' s had no significant variation. A marked difference was observed in the Pb subcellular distribution and its chemical forms in roots between the two varieties under Pb stress. In Longjing 43 roots, all subcellular fractions except soluble ones had a lower Pb concentration at low Pb stress, and all the subcellular fractions except cell wall ones had a higher Pb concentration at higher Pb stress, compared with those in Yingshuang's. In Longjing 43 roots, the HAc-extractable Pb occupied the greatest proportion, followed by NaCl-extractable Pb, HCl- and H2O- extractable Pb, and ethanol-extractable Pb; while in Yingshuang's, NaCl-extractable Pb had the greatest proportion, followed by HAc-extractable Pb, HCl- and H2O-extractable Pb, and ethanol-extractable Pb. Based on these findings, tea plant variety Yingshuang was likely to possess a higher tolerance to Pb than Longjing 43 did.

Taking non-transgenic parental rice as the control, and by using 13C pulse-chase labeling method coupled with phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, this paper studied the effects of transgenic Bt rice on the microbial diversity in rhizosphere soil. The results showed that in the rhizosphere soils of transgenic Bt rice and its non-transgenic parent, saturated PLFAs and branched PLFAs were the main, followed by monounsaturated PLFAs, and polyunsaturated PLFAs. A significantly lower amount of Gram-positive bacterial PLFAs and a higher amount of Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs were observed in the rhizosphere soil of transgenic Bt rice at its seedling, booting, and heading stages, as compared with the control. In the whole growth period of rice, transgenic Bt gene had no significant effects on the fungal and actinomycete PLFAs in rhizosphere soil, and no significant difference was observed in the rhizosphere soil 13C-PLFA content between transgenic Bt rice and its non-transgenic parent. These findings indicated that the insertion of exogenous cry1Ab gene into rice only had temporary effects on the microbial community composition in the rhizosphere soil of rice.

Persisters are a group of special subpopulation of bacteria, only occupying0.1% of the whole population but having the characteristics different from the ordinary bacteria and resistant mutants. They have complex formation mechanism, and are difficult to isolate and culture. The persisters can adapt to the adverse environment via "dormancy-growth-proliferation" to maintain their survival and cell structure stability, and play a vital role in the multi-drug and multi-metal tolerance of microbial biofilm, being of great significance in maintaining the stability of microbial community structure. This paper reviewed the research progress on the characteristics of persisters, their gene regulation mechanisms, and their effects on the multi-drug and multi-metal tolerance of microbial biofilm. The related research directions in the future were also prospected.

The role of sulfur on the availability of Cu and the bacterial community in rice rhizospheres was investigated by pot experiments. With sulfur addition, pH in rhizosphere soil decreased and Mg(NO3)2 extractable Cu increased significantly. The bacterial community composition also changed with sulfur addition. Some specific clones having high similarity to Thiobacillus, which indicated that sulfur oxidation in the rice rhizosphere could increase the availability of Cu. These results suggested that sulfur source which could provide substrate to sulfur oxidizing bacteria and enhance the availability of Cu was not a suitable sulfur fertilizer for Cu polluted soil.

As the first step of nitrification, ammonia oxidation is the key process in global nitrogen biogeochemical cycling. So far, the autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the beta- and gamma-subgroups of proteobacteria have been considered as the most important contributors to ammonia oxidation, but the recent researches indicated that ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are widely distributed in various kinds of ecosystems and quantitatively predominant, playing important roles in the global nitrogen biogeochemical cycling. This paper reviewed the morphological, physiological, and ecological characteristics and the molecular phylogenies of AOA, and compared and analyzed the differences and similarities of the ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) and its encoding genes between AOA and AOB. In addition, the potential significant roles of AOA in nitrogen biogeochemical cycling in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems were summarized, and the future research directions of AOA in applied ecology and environmental protection were put forward.

A pot experiment was conducted to study the microbial activity and community structure in a lead-polluted paddy soil under effects of amendment with different concentration sodium thiosulfate. The amendment of the sulfur-containing substrate increased the soil oxidation-reduction potential and respiration rate, promoted the growth of soil sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, and induced some changes in soil microbial community structure. The clone sequencing indicated that the specific bands of soil microbes in sodium thiosulfate treatments had very high similarity to Bateroidetes, Thiobacillus, beta-proteobacteria, and Acidobacteria. Significant changes were observed in the contents of soil carbonate- and Fe/Mn oxide- bound Pb after the amendment of sodium thiosulfate.

Phosphorus (P) release from sediments is one of the most important causes of lake eutrophication, while the activity of P is determined by P chemical form. Due to its advantages in improving our knowledge about the P fractions in environmental samples, the 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) technology has received extensive attention. This paper summarized the current studies on the characterization, translocation, and transformation of P fractions in sediments by using this technology, and described the technical principles, classification, analytical procedures, and specific application fields of this technology. At present, the researches of sediment P by using 31P NMR technology were focused on the characterization of different P forms, the effects of microbes on the P translocation and transformation, and the quantitative analysis of different P fractions. The studies on the P-extracting agents and extraction methods were the hot topics as well. The potential issues and research trends about the application of 31P NMR technology in environmental samples were also discussed.

Laboratory simulation tests were conducted to examine the effects of different washing reagents (distilled water, HCl, H3PO4, oxalic acid, and CaCl2) in extracting the heavy metals from contaminated soils left by a chemical plant. The effects of reagent concentration, reaction time, and washing time on the washing efficiency were investigated, and the form variation of test heavy metals was determined before and after HCl washing. Distilled water, H3PO4, and CaCl2 could remove less than 1% of most heavy metals, and the highest removal rate was only 3.58%; while 2 mol HCl x L(-1) could obtain the highest washing efficiency under the optimal conditions, i. e., soil:liquid ratio was 1:3, reaction time was 1 hour, and the soils were washed twice by HCl solution. The removal rates of Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd from test soils were 80.75%, 88.69%, 98.00%, 79.33%, and 95.52%, respectively. Among the washing reagents, HCl could effectively remove all forms of heavy metals.

Landfill sites are the major sources of offensive odor in urban public facilities. With the progress of urbanization and the residents' demands for a higher living environment quality, the odor emission from landfill sites has become a severe pollution problem, and the odor control at landfill sites has been one of the research hotspots. This paper summarized the main components and their concentrations of the odor from landfill sites, and expatiated on the research progress in the in-situ control of the odor. The further research directions in in-situ control of the odor from landfill sites were prospected.

Seasonal variations of self-purification ability for small natural shallow lakes in South Lake Taihu were investigated. The results showed that seasonal difference of self-purification of permanganate index, total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH4(+)-N), nitrate (NO3(-)-N), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll (Chl-a) in small shallow lakes were remarkable. Effects of self-purification were better in spring and winter, and were worse in summer by NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N and in autumn by TP and Chl-a. Organic pollution was light, TN and TP pollution were seriously in four seasons. Concentrations of TN and TP brought a well condition to algae growth, and lakes were eutrification easily by the limiting factor of phosphorus. Concentrations of Chl-a were showed that lakes were eutrophic in summer or autumn and mesotrophic in winter or spring. Growth and blooms of phytoplankton impacted water quality and self-purification of lakes. Species and quantity of aquatic plants were the main factors to affect the change of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), and loss of fertilizer and domestic wastewater were the main reasons for high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in lakes. Organic nitrogen was the main portion of TN by using excessive organic fertilizer in summer, NO3(-)-N was the main portion in other seasons. The principal component analysis result showed that the three principal components of self-purification ability were phytoplankton factor (water temperature, pH, permanganate index and Chl-a), farm drainage factor (pH, DO and TN), nutrient factor (TN and TP). The cluster analysis result showed that the water quality of four seasons in 11 sampling sites of three lakes could be divided into two categories: first, in spring, autumn and winter; second, in summer. This was caused by the temperature changes and agricultural drainage. Water temperature and pH were used to calculate the concentrations of permanganate index, TN, TP, Chl-a by linear equations, which improved the quick prediction ability in locale.

Tea waste is an important part of agricultural solid wastes, because of its various sources and huge amount. The heavy metals removal from waste water by tea waste has been paid much attention by the researchers around the world, owing to the adsorption characteristic of tea waste. In this paper, the research advances in the heavy metals removal from aqueous phase by tea waste were summarized from the aspects of affecting factors, adsorption mechanism, pretreatment, desorption, and regeneration, and the prospects were put forward. It was considered that for the industrialized utilization of tea waste absorbents, further researches should be focused on their adsorption mechanism, pretreatment, desorption and regeneration, technological parameters, and after treatment.

A 2-month fumigation experiment was conducted with opened top chambers to study the effects of different concentration (0.1, 0.5, and 4.0 microl x L(-1)) NO2 on the growth and photosynthesis of 1-year Cinnamomum camphora seedlings. Fumigation with 0.1 and 0.5 microl NO2 x L(-1) promoted the growth of the seedlings, while with 4.0 microl NO2 x L(-1) was in adverse. The diurnal variation of net photosynthetic rate (P(n)) presented two-peaks, with an obvious depression in midday. 0.5 microl NO2 x L(-1) increased the P(n), the maximum of P(n) reached 8.542 micromol CO2 x m(-2) s(-1); 4.0 microl NO2 x L(-1) decreased the P(n) in most period of time; while the effect of 0.1 microl NO2 x L(-1) varied with time period. Fumigation with 0.5 and 4.0 microl NO2 x L(-1) increased the maximal and minimal values of stomatal conductance (G(s)) and intercellular CO2 concentration (C( i)), while 0.1 microl NO2 x L(-1) increased the maximal and minimal values of C(i) but decreased the maximal and minimal values of G(s). At the middle and late stages of fumigation, the mean P(n) of the seedlings treated with 0.5 microl NO2 x L(-1) was significantly higher than that treated with 0.1 and 4 microl NO2 x L(-1). At the early stage of fumigation, 0.5 and 4.0 micro NO2 x L(-1) significantly decreased the maximal PS II efficiency (F(v)/F(m)); and at the late stage, 4.0 microl NO2 x L(-1) still decreased the F(v)/F(m) significantly.

The effects of bio-charcoal acted as sludge-composting additive on soil characteristics and plant growth were studied. Compared with the treatment of composted sludge without bio-charcoal, soil cation exchange capacity in treatment of composted sludge with bio-charcoal increased over 5% and 10% respectively and soil nitrogen content increased 13% and 18% respectively for two kind soils. The composted sludge with bio-charcoal also resulted in 23% higher enhancement on ryegrass biomass and 8%-10% higher enhancement on ryegrass chlorophyll content. In addition, with the amendment of bio-charcoal, the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in composted sludge was decreased, which resulted in the lower absorption and accumulation of ryegrass to PAHs. Compared with the control, the PAHs concentration in ryegrass amended composted sludge with bio-charcoal decreased 27%-34%. The results indicated that composted sludge with bio-charcoal resulted in much more improvement on the plant growth as well as less negative effect on environment. Therefore, biocharcoal was in favor of the safe land application of sewage sludge.

The inhibitory effect of allelochemicals released by submerged macrophytes on phytoplankton is considered as one of the mechanisms that contribute to the stabilization of clear-water status in shallow lakes. This paper reviewed the research progress in the allelopathy of submerged macrophytes on algae from the aspects of the occurrence frequency and coverage of allelopathically active submerged macrophytes in lakes, and the kinds and allelopathical effects of the allelochemicals released from the macrophytes. The previous researches indicated that allelopathically active submerged macrophyte species such as Myriophyllum, Ceratophyllum, and Elodea were efficient to control phytoplankton, especially when their biomass was high enough, and the dominant algae were sensitive species. The allelochemicals such as hydroxybenzene released by the submerged macrophytes could inhibit the growth of algae. Different phytoplankton species exhibited different sensitivity against allelochemicals, e.g., cyanobacteria and diatom were more sensitive than green algae, while epiphytic species were less sensitive than phytoplankton. Environmental factors such as light, temperature, and nutrients could significantly affect the allelopathical effect of submerged macrophytes. The research of the allelopathy of submerged macrophytes is still at its beginning, and further researches are needed on the effects of environmental factors on the allelopathy, extraction and identification of allelochemicals, selective algal control mechanisms, and metabolism of the allelochmicals.

Biomass-derived black carbon, also named biochar, has the characteristics of high stability against decay and high capability of adsorption, and can affect the environment through its interactions with climate and geology, playing a significant role in global climate change, carbon biogeochemical cycle, and environmental system. In recent years, more and more researchers in the fields of atmospheric sciences, geology, and environmental science focused on the environmental behavior and effect of biochar. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil fertility, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper offered the latest information regarding the characteristics and biotic and abiotic oxidation mechanisms of biochar, its effects on global climate change, and the environmental effect of biochar in soil. Research prospects were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and effect of biochar in soil ecosystem.

Photosynthetic assimilation of CO2 is a primary source of carbon in soil and root exudates and can influence the community dynamics of rhizosphere organisms. Thus, if carbon partitioning is affected in transgenic crops, rhizosphere microbial communities may also be affected. In this study, the temporal effects of gene transformation on carbon partitioning in rice and rhizosphere microbial communities were investigated under greenhouse conditions using the 13C pulse-chase labeling method and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. The 13C contents in leaves of transgenic (Bt) and nontransgenic (Ck) rice were significantly different at the seedling, booting and heading stages. There were no detectable differences in 13C distribution in rice roots and rhizosphere microorganisms at any point during rice development. Although a significantly lower amount of Gram-positive bacterial PLFAs and a higher amount of Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs were observed in Bt rice rhizosphere as compared with Ck at all plant development stages, there were no significant differences in the amount of individual 13C-PLFA between Bt and Ck rhizospheres at any growing stage. These findings indicate that the insertion of cry1Ab and marker genes into rice had no persistent or adverse effect on the photosynthate distribution in rice or the microbial community composition in its rhizosphere.
