Background The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical implications of cases with recent dental extractions to establish a new classification of gingival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods A total of 156 patients were enrolled in this study. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: type I (dentate; n = 46), type II (edentulous; n = 55), and type III (dental extraction; n = 55). Continuous clinical and treatment variables were analyzed by 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) or t test, and categorical variables were evaluated by chi-square tests. Assessment of 5-year survival rates were carried out by the Kaplan–Meier analysis, and the influence of related factors was evaluated by the log-rank test. Result The 55 type III patients showed a high probability of bony invasion (80%) and a lower 5-year survival rate (48%) than the other 2 groups. Conclusion Our proposed classification may help clinicians to identify patients with gingival SCC who present with more advanced disease status. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2015

The aim of this study was to determine the survival rate of oral cancer patients treated in a medical center in central Taiwan and to investigate whether socio-demographic factors influence their survival. We retrospectively reviewed 1010 chart records of oral cancer patients. Glutathione (GSH) concentrations in human epidermoid carcinoma tissues were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The mean glutathione content of 26 epidermoid carcinoma intratumor tissue specimens was 24.36 nmol/mg protein, which was significantly higher than that in adjacent non-tumor tissue parts (3.04 nmol/mg protein). The mean concentration found in normal oral mucosa was 4.80 nmol/mg protein. Tissue GSH levels were not correlated with the age of the patients or tumor size. Additionally, cellular GSH levels in nine different cell lines were found to spread over a wide range from 0.97 to 50.97 nmol/mg protein. Elevated GSH levels in cancer tissues were probably due to their abnormal proliferative activities. These results indicate that the glutathione level of oral tissues may be a useful marker for oral cancer, which is in agreement with findings from lung squamous cell carcinoma, cervical squamous cell carcinoma and other squamous cell carcinomas.

Background/purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SSC) of the tongue after primary surgical resection and to correlate the presence of OSA with the occurrence of obstructive apnea in this patient population. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective study of 26 Taiwanese patients, 24 males and two females, aged 37–71 years, after surgical resection of SSC of the tongue. Patients who had a follow-up after treatment of 6 months to 11 years were eligible for inclusion. During the post-treatment period, the occurrence of OSA was determined in these patients. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) was used to determine the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI). Patients were considered to have OSA if the AHI value was >5. Results: Patients with an AHI value of 5 showed a mean BMI of 28.3 kg/m2. The BMI distribution between patients with AHI value of 5 was statistically significant (P = 0.018). Using the definition of clinically significant sleep apnea as AHI > 5, 14 of 26 patients (53.85%) had clinical OSA. The OSA and non-OSA groups showed no statistical significance in terms of age, tumor size, tongue ablation, neck dissection [method?], or wound reconstruction methods. Conclusion: Incidence of OSA in the patient population with SSC of the tongue was found to be significantly higher than that in the general population. The limitations of this study were the relatively small patient sample size and no presurgical PSG record being obtained from the patients to compare the sleep quality before and after cancer therapy.
