Statement of problem Quick response (QR) codes are a fast and efficient technology for linking and accessing identifying information, and their use has been proposed in forensics. The heat resistance and esthetics of denture marking methods (DMMs) have been recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), but studies on these aspects of printed QR codes are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal printed material with QR codes for implementation as a DMM adjusted to the recommendations of the ADA. Material and methods The behavior of 4 types of paper, bond paper, fiberglass filter paper, ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowire paper, and polyolefin and silica paper with printed QR codes was analyzed. They were exposed to temperatures between 100 °C and 1000 °C in a heat muffle for 1 hour. Each specimen was subjected to both a morphological and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanned by using 3 different smartphones. Results The scans were positive for bond paper (33.3%), fiberglass fiber paper (50%), ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowire paper (100%), and polyolefin and silica paper (70.4%). The TGA revealed continuous decomposition curves (average 16.5 minutes at 624 °C). Conclusions Printed QR codes on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowire paper appear to be suitable as information reservoirs, even surviving incineration, and may be implemented as a DMM conforming to the ADA recommendations.

A scalable green and low-cost synthesis of ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires using peanut oil is reported, which can be scaled up for large-scale low-cost production of ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires and the fire-resistant inorganic paper.

This review article provides a comprehensive summary, discussion and perspective on recent research advances for a new kind of multifunctional fire‐resistant paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires, including the synthesis, properties, and applications.

Cellulose fiber (CF) paper is a low-cost, sustainable, and flexible substrate, which has gained increasing interest recently. Before practical usage, the functionalization of the pristine CF paper is indispensable to meet requirements of specific applications. Different from conventional surface modification or physical mixing methods, we report in situ growth of ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAPNWs) with lengths larger than 10 μm on the CF paper. HAPNWs are radially aligned on the surface of CFs, creating a micro/nanoscale hierarchical structure. By means of the excellent ion exchange ability of HAP and the hierarchical structure, the functions of the CF paper can be easily customized. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate two kinds of functional CF paper: (1) the photoluminescent CF paper by doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions into the crystal lattice of HAPNWs and (2) the superhydrophobic CF paper by coating poly(dimethylsiloxane) on the HAPNW hierarchical structure, which can be applied for self-cleaning and oil/water separation. It is expected that an in situ growth of ultralong HAPNWs will provide an instructive guideline for designing a CF paper with specific functions.

Semiconductor photocatalysts and membrane separation technology have been widely used in the field of water treatment. Usually, the particles of traditional semiconductor photocatalysts are easy to aggregate, difficult to separate from the liquid phase after photocatalysis, and may even cause secondary pollution. On the other hand, the membrane separation technology is also facing the problem of sharp decreases in removal efficiency and water flux caused by the membrane fouling. However, it is an attractive and promising solution to combine two technologies of photocatalysis and membrane separation for high-performance water treatment. In this work, we have developed the calcium oleate precursor solvothermal method to synthesize ultralong nanowires (UNWs) of Ca-alendronate (Ca-ALN) complex for the first time. Experimental results and data analysis indicate that the as-prepared Ca-ALN ultralong nanowires are an n-type semiconductor with an energy band gap of 3.41 eV. A new type of multifunctional photocatalytic filter paper has been developed based on ultralong nanowires of Ca-ALN complex (Ca-ALN-UNWs) and cellulose fibers (CFs). The as-prepared Ca-ALN-UNW/CF photocatalytic filter paper exhibits multifunctions of photocatalysis, adsorption, and filtration, which can be used for high-performance treatment of the wastewater containing various pollutants such as heavy-metal ions, dyes, antibiotics, and bacteria. Simultaneous enhancement in water flux and removal efficiency during the filtration process remains a big challenge for separation membranes. The porous structure of the filter paper can provide many channels for water transportation, but the separation performance is generally poor. The purpose of this study is to develop a new kind of filter paper consisting of ultralong hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires, cellulose fibers (CFs) and double metal oxide (LDO) nanosheets, and to achieve the simultaneous enhancement of both water flux and removal efficiency for high-performance dye separation. In this work, a novel kind of LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper consisting of ultralong HAP nanowires and CFs and LDO nanosheets has been developed for rapid water filtration and highly efficient dye adsorption. Positively charged LDO nanosheets can adsorb on the surface of negatively charged ultralong HAP nanowires and embed in the porous networked structure of the LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper, which can provide a porous structure for rapid water transportation and can adjust the pore size of the nanocomposite filter paper. As a result, the pure water flux of the LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper can be adjusted. The optimized pure water flux of the LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper can reach 783.6 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, which is 1.51 times that of the HAP/CF filter paper without LDO nanosheets (518.6 L m-2 h-1 bar-1). More importantly, the adsorption capacity of LDO nanosheets is high for dye molecules, the rejection percentage of Congo red (CR) by the as-prepared HAP/CF filter paper is only 59.8%, and its water flux is 534.7 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The optimized rejection percentage and water flux of the LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper for CR are significantly enhanced (98.3% and 736.8 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, respectively) compared to those of the HAP/CF filter paper. The size of LDO nanosheets has a significant effect on the water flux and dye rejection percentage of the LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper. The as-prepared LDO/HAP/CF nanocomposite filter paper is promising for the applications in highly efficient purification of wastewater containing dye molecules.

Solar energy-driven interfacial water evaporation is a promising energy utilization technology in the field of seawater desalination and water purification. However, the accumulation of salt on the heating surface severely impairs the water evaporation performance and long-time stability. Herein, we demonstrate a new kind of photothermal paper comprising a high-temperature-resistant paper made from ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires and glass fibers and black nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles for solar energy-driven desalination. Owing to the high photothermal conversion ability, fast water transportation in the air-laid paper, and good heat insulation, the hydrophilic HN/NiO photothermal paper can achieve efficient, stable and recyclable water evaporation performance. In addition, a Janus HN/NiO photothermal paper based on hydrophobic sodium oleate-modified ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires has been developed, and it has a high water evaporation efficiency of 83.5% under 1 kW m-2 irradiation. In particular, with the bottom hydrophobic ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowire layer and water-transporting channels in the air-laid paper to facilitate salt exchange, the as-prepared Janus evaporator exhibits no salt accumulation on the surface, high performance and long-time stable desalination using simulated seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl). Furthermore, the Janus evaporator with the hydrophobic ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowire substrate can be extended to support other photothermal materials such as black titanium oxide (Ti2O3) and Ketjen black carbon. The as-prepared Janus HN/Ti2O3 and Janus HN/KB photothermal paper also exhibit salt-resistant desalination function. The as-prepared Janus salt-resistant photothermal paper with efficient, stable and recyclable merits has great potential in solar energy-driven desalination and water purification.

It has been proved that silicon-substituted calcium phosphate ceramics possess superior bone regeneration and resorbability to HA, while the synthesis of single-phase nanocrystallized high Si-containing calcium phosphate is still a challenge. In the present work, a novel and facile aqueous precipitation method assisted with ultrasonic irradiation was adopted firstly to synthesise a single-phase nanocrystallized calcium silicophosphate (Ca5(PO4)2SiO4, CPS) biomaterial. Crystallization and morphology of Si-apatite precursors synthesized with or without ultrasonic assistance were primarily investigated and the related mechanism was discussed. Moreover, the sinterability, in vitro bioactivity and osteogenic activity of the synthesized CPS were studied in detail. Results showed that an ultrasonic cavitation effect could be beneficial to form a highly dispersive CPS precursor with a single Si-apatite phase, which greatly reduced the calcination temperature of CPS from 1350 °C to 1000 °C. Nanocrystallized CPS powders were obtained successfully under ultrasound-assisted conditions, which showed superior sinterability, in vitro bioactivity and osteogenic activity than those of micron-sized CPS and HA powders. It might be a promising candidate material for bone tissue regeneration applications.

The direct transformation of external energy into mechanical work by the self-propelled motor inspires and promotes the development of miniaturized machines. Several strategies have been utilized to realize the self-driven motion, but in some cases multiple power sources are needed, and this would complicate the operation in diverse environments. In this regard, the dual-mode self-propelled system based on a single power source is highly desirable. In this work, single-light-actuated dual-mode propulsion at the liquid/air interface is realized by using flexible, superhydrophobic, and thermostable photothermal paper made from flexible ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires, titanium sesquioxide (Ti2O3) particles, and poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating. The superhydrophobic surface enables the thermostable photothermal paper to float on the water surface spontaneously and significantly reduces the drag force. In the usual situation, the heat power produced by the photothermal effect is utilized to trigger the Marangoni propulsion. While the Marangoni effect is quenched in water containing the surfactant, the propulsion mode can be directly switched into the vapor-enabled propulsion mode by simply increasing the light power density. Particularly, the light-driven motion in a linear, curvilinear, or rotational manner can be realized by designing the self-propelled machines with appropriate shapes by using the processable photothermal paper. It is expected that the as-prepared dual-mode self-propelled, flexible, superhydrophobic, and thermostable photothermal paper-based devices have promising applications in various fields such as microrobots, biomedicine, and environmental monitoring.

Stress alters the level of reward evaluation and seeking. However, the neural circuitry mechanisms underlying stress induced effects on natural reward seeking remain unclear. Here we report a septal-accumbens pathway that mediates the effects of acute stress on reward seeking suppression. We first established the sucrose oral self-administration paradigm and measured the effects of acute stress on reward seeking behavior after 21 days of abstinence. Both forced swimming stress and foot shock stress significantly suppressed the natural reward seeking. Among a variety of brain regions, intermediolateral septum (LSi) appear as a strong stress-responsive area containing abundant c-Fos positive cells; chemogenetic inactivation of LSi reinstated the reward seeking behavior. To elucidate the downstream targets receiving LSi projections, we combined pathway-specific retro-labeling and chemogenetic manipulation to confirm the involvement of LSi-nucleus accumbens (NAc) rather than the Ventral tegmental area (VTA) in mediating the observed behavioral responses. In conclusion, the septal-accumbal projection constitute a discrete circuit dictating the stress evoked alterations on reward seeking and may implicate in treatment of stress induced anhedonia.

Background Rotator cuff tear (RCT) is a common problem of the musculoskeletal system. With the advantage of promoting bone formation, calcium phosphate materials have been widely used to augment tendon-bone healing. However, only enhancing bone regeneration may be not enough for improving tendon–bone healing. Angiogenesis is another fundamental factor required for tendon–bone healing. Therefore, it’s necessary to develop a convenient and reliable method to promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis simultaneously, thereby effectively promoting tendon–bone healing. Methods The amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nanoparticles with dual biological activities of osteogenesis and angiogenesis were prepared by a simple low-temperature aqueous solution method using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an organic phosphorus source. The activities of osteogenesis and angiogenesis and the effect on the tendon–bone healing of ACP nanoparticles were tested in vitro and in a rat model of acute RCT. Results The ACP nanoparticles with a diameter of tens of nanometers were rich in bioactive adenosine. In vitro, we confirmed that ACP nanoparticles could enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis. In vivo, radiological and histological evaluations demonstrated that ACP nanoparticles could enhance bone and blood vessels formation at the tendon–bone junction. Biomechanical testing showed that ACP nanoparticles improved the biomechanical strength of the tendon–bone junction and ultimately promoted tendon–bone healing of rotator cuff. Conclusions We successfully confirmed that ACP nanoparticles could promote tendon–bone healing. ACP nanoparticles are a promising biological nanomaterial in augmenting tendon–bone healing. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) biomaterials with high biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteoconductivity/osteoinductivity have many applications in the biomedical fields. The traditional HAP materials usually feature high brittleness. Although hybridizing HAP with polymers can obtain deformable materials, their deformability is mainly contributed by polymers. Recently, research progress has been made in the deformable HAP biomaterials with high flexibility, softness, or elasticity based on ultralong HAP nanowires (UHANWs). This article provides a brief review on the recent progress on this research topic. Specifically, the strategy is proposed for solving the high brittleness of HAP biomaterials using UHANWs; the synthetic strategies for UHANWs are presented; and a variety of deformable biomaterials based on UHANWs are discussed. This review article provides a new concept of deformable biomaterials consisting of UHANWs and will stimulate new research works on deformable HAP biomaterials and further contribute to their development and applications in the biomedical fields such as bone regeneration, artificial periosteum, skin wound healing, biomedical paper, medical test paper, drug delivery, diagnosis, and therapy.

Solar energy-driven water evaporation is a promising technique for clean water regeneration to tackle the world-wide water scarcity problem. Previous studies have revealed the important role of the bilayer structure in the solar energy-driven water evaporation, the top layer is the photothermal material, and the bottom porous material is used for water transportation and heat insulation. Herein, a new kind of the bilayer aerogel composed of hydrophilic ultralong hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowire aergel and hydrophobic carbon nanotube (CNT) coating has been developed and demonstrated as a highly efficient self-floating evaporator for solar energy-driven photothermal water purification. The hydrophilic and highly porous HAP nanowire aerogel with a low thermal conductivity ensures excellent thermal management and high water evaporation rate, and the CNT coating layer enables highly efficient solar light absorption and energy conversion. With these structural merits, the as-prepared HAP/CNT bilayer aerogel has a high water evaporation rate of 1.34 kg m−2 h−1 and high water evaporation efficiency of 89.4% under solar light irradiation at a power density of 1 kW m−2. Additionally, the high-performance water purification function of the HAP/CNT bilayer aerogel is demonstrated by producing clean water from the actual seawater and simulated wastewater. The experimental results demonstrate the promising potential of the as-prepared HAP/CNT bilayer aerogel for high-performance solar energy-driven photothermal clean water regeneration.

Information protection is particularly important for secure communication between parties, avoiding the leakage of secret information to unknown parties. Among various strategies used for information protection in the previous reports in the literature, security inks made from photoluminescent materials are the most widely investigated. The security inks suffer from the drawbacks such as lack of universality on various substrates. In this work, we provide a promising new complement to the security ink-based protection techniques. We report a kind of portable photoluminescent chalk made from lanthanide-doped ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires, which can directly write the covert information at anytime and anyplace on arbitrary surfaces and substrates including paper sheets, metals, fabrics, plastics, woods, walls, foams, leaves, and even human body. The as-written original information cannot be recognized under the ambient light, but it is readable upon exposure to the ultraviolet light. In this work, the dual and triple encryption strategies are also provided for the high-level information protection. It is expected that the versatile, convenient, and user-friendly strategy demonstrated herein is promising for the on-site secret information protection.
