Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been performed as a palliative treatment for patients with HCC. However, HCC is easy to recur after TACE. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has clinical potential in evaluating the TACE treatment effect for patients with liver cancer. However, traditional MRI has some limitations.To explore the clinical potential of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in predicting recurrence and cellular invasion of the peritumoral liver zone of HCC after TACE.Seventy-six patients with 82 HCC nodules were recruited in this study and underwent DKI after TACE. According to pathological examinations or the overall modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (mRECIST) criterion, 48 and 34 nodules were divided into true progression and pseudo-progression groups, respectively. The TACE-treated area, peritumoral liver zone, and far-tumoral zone were evaluated on DKI-derived metric maps. Non-parametricDKI metrics, including mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (DA), radial diffusivity (DR), axial kurtosis (KA), and anisotropy fraction of kurtosis (Fak), showed statistically different values between the true progression and pseudo-progression groups (DKI has been demonstrated with robust performance in predicting the therapeutic response of HCC to TACE. Moreover, DKI might reveal cellular invasion of the peritumoral zone by molecular diffusion-restricted change.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer, accounting for about 90% of liver cancer cases. It is currently the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Moreover, recurrence of HCC is common. Microvascular invasion (MVI) is a major factor associated with recurrence in postoperative HCC. It is difficult to evaluate MVI using traditional imaging modalities. Currently, MVI is assessed primarily through pathological and immunohistochemical analyses of postoperative tissue samples. Needle biopsy is the primary method used to confirm MVI diagnosis before surgery. As the puncture specimens represent just a small part of the tumor, and given the heterogeneity of HCC, biopsy samples may yield false-negative results. Radiomics, an emerging, powerful, and non-invasive tool based on various imaging modalities, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and positron emission tomography, can predict the HCC-MVI status preoperatively by delineating the tumor and/or the regions at a certain distance from the surface of the tumor to extract the image features. Although positive results have been reported for radiomics, its drawbacks have limited its clinical translation. This article reviews the application of radiomics, based on various imaging modalities, in preoperative evaluation of HCC-MVI and explores future research directions that facilitate its clinical translation.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease with a high case fatality rate. Few studies have been performed on bacterial or fungal coinfections or the effect of antibiotic therapy. A retrospective, observational study was performed to assess the prevalence of bacterial and fungal coinfections in patients hospitalized for SFTSV infection. The most commonly involved microorganisms and the effect of antimicrobial therapy were determined by the site and source of infection. A total of 1201 patients hospitalized with SFTSV infection were included; 359 (29.9%) had microbiologically confirmed infections, comprised of 292 with community-acquired infections (CAIs) and 67 with healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Death was independently associated with HAIs, with a more significant effect than that observed for CAIs. For bacterial infections, only those acquired in hospitals were associated with fatal outcomes, while fungal infection, whether acquired in hospital or community, was related to an increased risk of fatal outcomes. The infections in the respiratory tract and bloodstream were associated with a higher risk of death than that in the urinary tract. Both antibiotic and antifungal treatments were associated with improved survival for CAIs, while for HAIs, only antibiotic therapy was related to improved survival, and no effect from antifungal therapy was observed. Early administration of glucocorticoids was associated with an increased risk of HAIs. The study provided novel clinical and epidemiological data and revealed risk factors, such as bacterial coinfections, fungal coinfections, infection sources, and treatment strategies associated with SFTS deaths/survival. This report might be helpful in curing SFTS and reducing fatal SFTS.

The regulatory guidelines for the research and development of paediatric drugs are still evolving in China. The formulation of the guidelines started from learning and borrowing existing experience, and gradually changed to the exploration and improvement of local guidelines, which was not only in line with international standards but also had breakthroughs, innovations and Chinese characteristics. In this paper, the current setting of paediatric drug research and development in China and corresponding technical guidelines have been introduced from regulatory perspectives, and the accessibility of further improvement in regulatory strategies has also been discussed.

Purpose Existing studies reflect that traditional teaching–learning relationships between supervisors and graduate students have become disjointed with actuality seriously. In particular, there are practical difficulties in handling many students from coursework-based postgraduate degrees under current university curricula. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between research supervisors and graduate students on social media, which is popular among students. Design/methodology/approach This study surveyed 109 graduate students from two majors (population around 100 each) of a university in Hong Kong to explore their information usage for research on social media, related attitudes and their perceived supervisor relationships. The differences between the two majors were also compared. Findings The authors’ findings indicated that graduate students were active on social media, and social media has successfully provided effective alternate ways for students to communicate with their research supervisors. Social media could improve relationships between supervisors and research students and among fellow students. Besides education purposes, students also discussed their personal affairs on social media with supervisors, demonstrating enhanced trusted relationships. Graduate students also showed confidence in the further application of social media in higher education. Some differences between respondents from the two programs were also found in terms of communication contents, strengths, personal preferences and purposes for using social media. Originality/value Scant studies focus on the relationship between supervisors and graduate students under the current social media environment, especially for students from coursework-based postgraduate degrees. At a deeper level, for the widespread use of social media in the information age, this study explores the specific changes brought about by social media. Therefore, this study is of great theoretical and practical value to graduate education under the current social media environment.

Chemically deposited multiple layer films are common structures in microelectronics and MEMS devices and their stress states directly influence both their structural and electrical integrities. From structural reliability perspective, it is important to assess stress state for guiding the structural integrity evaluation. However, the stress states of the film structures during deposition and after post-deposition thermal annealing are process-dependent due to the interaction between thermal stress, void-driven intrinsic stress generation, and stress relaxations. Under such a complex circumstance and multiple length scale nature, it needs an effective model to guide the structural design. In this work, a semi-analytical phenomenological-based model is proposed by simultaneously considering microstructure evolution-dependent intrinsic stress, stress relaxation, and multi-layered curvature-stress relation to predict the stresses existed in each structural layer during thermal processing. The model is then implemented in a finite element model to mimic the entire processing. The model prediction and the experimental results are then mutually correlated and the prediction results agrees with that performed by finite element simulation well. Finally, essential material characterization results in associated with the model prediction are then applied for evaluating residual stresses of each layer in multi-layer nitride/oxide structures as the basis for observed structure failures under indentation loads. In summary, this work provides a rational analysis procedure for stress analysis of multi-layered deposited films during deposition and/or after subsequent thermal processing with experimental verifications and essential demonstrations. This approach should be possible to provide more precise information for optimizing the deposition and the subsequent thermal annealing processes for improving structural longevity of IC devices.

The triplet-based knowledge in large-scale knowledge bases is most likely lacking in structural logic and problematic of conducting knowledge hierarchy. In this paper, we introduce the concept of metaknowledge to knowledge engineering research for the purpose of structural knowledge construction. Therefore, the Metaknowledge Extraction Framework and Document Structure Tree model are presented to extract and organize metaknowledge elements (titles, authors, abstracts, sections, paragraphs, etc.), so that it is feasible to extract the structural knowledge from multi-modal documents. Experiment results have proved the effectiveness of metaknowledge elements extraction by our framework. Meanwhile, detailed examples are given to demonstrate what exactly metaknowledge is and how to generate it. At the end of this paper, we propose and analyze the task flow of metaknowledge applications and the associations between knowledge and metaknowledge.

Elucidating the influence mechanisms of seed germination and seedling growth is important for revealing the natural regeneration of forest plantations. We collected the seeds from 58-year-old Quercus acutissima Carruth. forest, and the seeds were further divided into three classes: large, medium, and small, and sown under the forest gaps (I, 197.82 m2; II, 91.85 m2, III, understory) to observe seed germination and early seedling growth. Precipitation in the study area and soil moisture content in the forest gaps were also observed during the trial period. The results showed that the precipitation in 2019 was similar to that in 2020; both were significantly lower than the precipitation in 2021. The difference in soil water content between gaps I and II was not significant, and both were significantly lower than III. The order of seedling emergence rate in gaps was II > III > I, but the minimum was almost close to zero in I. Large and medium seeds showed significantly greater emergence rate than small seeds. The seedlings of II had higher seedling height, ground diameter, ground diameter relative growth rate, seedling biomass, root surface area, and root volume than those of III. Large seeds had the highest ground diameter, ground diameter relative growth rate, biomass, root mass ratio, root shoot ratio, and root surface area. Correlation analysis showed that seedling biomass was significantly and positively correlated with root surface area and root volume, and significantly and negatively correlated with specific root length and specific root surface area. The regulation of soil moisture in the gap and the adaptability related to seed size were two key factors influencing the seed germination and early seedling growth of Q. acutissima.

Pot experiments were performed to comparatively study the differences in 16 salt tolerance indices between the seedlings of six Salix matsudana clones under the stress of various concentrations of NaCl (0, 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7%), including the salt injury index, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, leaf water content, relative conductivity, malondialdehyde content, and antioxidant enzyme activity. The salt-tolerant clones and key indices of salt tolerance were selected. Transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed on the selected salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive clones under salt stress, and the links between the physiological indices of salt tolerance and gene expression were analyzed. Results: (1) Superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), chlorophyll, and net photosynthetic rate were closely related to the salt tolerance of Salix matsudana at the seedling stage. The regression equation was constructed as follows: salt tolerance index (y) = 0.224x10 + 0.216x11 + 0.127x12 + 0.191x7 − 0.187 (x10 = chlorophyll, x11 = SOD, x12 = POD, x7 = net photosynthetic rate). (2) The number of differentially expressed genes between the seedlings of salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive clones varied with the time of exposure (0 h, 4 h, 12 h, and 24 h) to 200 mmol·L−1 NaCl stress. The most differentially expressed genes in Sm172 were detected upon 24 h vs. 4 h of salt treatment, while the most in Sm6 were in the 24 h vs. 0 h comparison. Gene Ontology analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that several differentially expressed genes were involved in carotenoid biosynthesis and plant mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways. The nine highly expressed transcription factor genes (Sm172-f2p30-2392, Sm172-f2p28-2386, Sm6-f8p60-2372, Sm6-f2p39-2263, Sm6-f16p60-2374, Sm6-f3p60-931, Sm6-f2p60-1067, Sm172-f3p54-1980, and Sm172-f3p54-1980) were closely correlated with the four key indices of salt tolerance. These genes could become genetic resources for salt tolerance breeding of Salix matsudana.

Understanding dietary selection and feeding strategies is important for the conservation and management of endangered primate species. Here, we conducted a preliminary study on the diet and feeding behavior of endangered Shortridge’s langurs (Trachypithecus shortridgei) within the Drung River Valley (Dulongjiang) in southwestern China. The study site lies at a high latitude (N27°47.5′) and elevation (1 900 m a.s.l.) and is characterized by substantial annual rainfall (2 745.1 mm). From August 2012 to September 2013, we observed five groups of langurs and analyzed their overall food composition and dietary variation in spring and autumn. To understand their dietary adaptations to the distinctive habitat of the Drung River Valley, we also compared the diet of Shortridge’s langurs to that of other Trachypithecus species inhabiting different environments. Results indicated that T. shortridgei fed on 52 plant species, 23 of which each accounted for ≥1% of their annual feeding time. Their primary dietary components included leaves (46.2%, young, mature, and petioles), fruits (28.7%, unripe 17.6%, ripe 11.1%), and mosses (10.2%). The langurs mainly consumed mature (34.2%) and young leaves (27.5%) in spring and ripe fruits (39.4%) and mature leaves (24.7%) in autumn. Two species of moss (Macrothamnium macrocarpum and Scapania verrucosa, 21.2% of annual feeding time), which are usually found growing together on cliffs, played a relatively important role in the diet of T. shortridgei. The langurs mainly consumed ripe fruits of Saurauia napaulensis (7.1%) and Dendropanax burmanicus (7.1%), which were abundant at lower elevations. Trachypithecus species in temperate forests consumed more fruits and seeds but fewer leaves (similar mature leaves but fewer young leaves) than those species in tropical forests, which may be related to their availability and abundance. Compared to Trachypithecus species in temperate forests, the higher proportion of mosses and mature leaves but fewer young leaves in the annual diet of T. shortridgei are likely a response to the distinctive Drung River Valley habitat. Therefore, conservation of the main food plants of this threatened species could be vital for its survival and conservation management.

Objective Progress in neoadjuvant therapy for resectable nonsmall cell lung cancer(NSCLC 1 )has been stagnant. There have been great achievements in immunotherapy for advanced NSCLC, but the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant immunotherapy for resectable NSCLC has not been clearly demonstrated. Methods Original articles describing the safety and efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy in resectable NSCLC published before January 2020 were retrieved from PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library. The odds ratio (OR 2 ) and 95 % confidence interval (CI 3 ) were calculated. Heterogeneity and subgroup analysis were performed. Results A total of 252 patients from seven studies were included. Major pathological response (MPR 4 ) and pathological complete response (pCR 5 ) were used to evaluate the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy. Compared with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, which exhibited less than 25 % MPR and approximately 2 %–15 % pCR, the values in neoadjuvant immunotherapy were significantly higher (MPR: OR = 0.59; 95 % CI, 0.36−0.98; pCR: OR = 0.16; 95 % CI, 0.09−0.27). Safety was evaluated by the incidence of treatment-related adverse events (TRAE 6 ), surgical resection rate, incidence of surgical complications and surgical delay rate. The pooled OR values of the incidence of TRAE, incidence of surgical complications and surgical delay rate were 0.19, 0.41 and 0.03, respectively, which were significantly better than those for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (95 % CI, 0.04−0.90; 0.22−0.75; 0.01−0.10, respectively). The mean surgical resection rate was 88.70 %, which was similar to the 75 %–90 % rate reported for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (OR = 7.61; 95 % CI, 4.90–11.81). Conclusion Neoadjuvant immunotherapy is effective and safe for resectable NSCLC.

Background In this study, we explored whether the proposed short-echo-time magnitude (setMag) image derived from quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) could resemble NM-MRI image in substantia nigra (SN), by quantitatively comparing the spatial similarity and diagnosis performances for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods QSM and NM-MRI were performed in 18 PD patients and 15 healthy controls (HCs). The setMag images were calculated using the short-echo-time magnitude images. Bilateral hyperintensity areas of SN (SNhyper) were manually segmented on setMag and NM-MRI images by two raters in a blinded manner. The inter-rater reliability was evaluated by the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). Then the inter-modality (i.e. setMag and NM-MRI) spatial similarity was quantitatively assessed using DSC and volume of the consensual voxels identified by both of two raters. The performances of mean SNhyper volume for PD diagnosis on setMag and NM-MRI images were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results The SNhyper segmented by two raters showed substantial to excellent inter-rater reliability for both setMag and NM-MRI images. The DSCs of SNhyper between setMag and NM-MRI images showed substantial to excellent voxel-wise overlap in HCs (0.80 ~ 0.83) and PD (0.73 ~ 0.76), and no significant difference was found between the SNhyper volumes of setMag and NM-MRI images in either HCs or PD (p > 0.05). The mean SNhyper volume was significantly decreased in PD patients in comparison with HCs on both setMag images (77.61 mm3 vs 95.99 mm3, p 3 vs 96.00 mm3, p hyper volume for PD diagnosis were 0.904 on setMag and 0.906 on NM-MRI images. No significant difference was found between the two curves (p = 0.96). Conclusions SNhyper on setMag derived from QSM demonstrated substantial spatial overlap with that on NM-MRI and provided comparable PD diagnostic performance, providing a new QSM-based multi-contrast imaging strategy for future PD studies.

A rapid method for simultaneous determination of five synthetic edible pigments (SEPs) including tartrazine (TA), ponceau 4R (PO), sunset yellow (SY), brilliant blue (BB) and erythrosine (ER) in beverages with titania-based RP-HPLC has been developed. The good linear relationships were obtained in the concentration ranges of 2.5–40 μg mL−1 for TA, PO and SY, 0.75–12 μg mL−1 for BB, and 1.25–20 μg mL−1 for ER, respectively. The detection limits (LODs) of five SEPs were 0.042, 0.021, 0.042, 0.0005, and 0.021 μg mL−1, respectively. The average recoveries were between 92.2% and 106.3%. Relative standard deviations (RSD, n = 7) for five SEPs were less than 1.18%. The precision and accuracy of the method can meet the requirements of HPLC analysis. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters of retention of the pigments in the titania column such as enthalpy (ΔHο), entropy (ΔSο) and Gibbs free energy (ΔGο) were also determined. To investigate whether an improved U2-Net model could be used to segment the median nerve and improve segmentation performance, we performed a retrospective study with 402 nerve images from patients who visited Huashan Hospital from October 2018 to July 2020; 249 images were from patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, and 153 were from healthy volunteers. From these, 320 cases were selected as training sets, and 82 cases were selected as test sets. The improved U2-Net model was used to segment each image. Dice coefficients (Dice), pixel accuracy (PA), mean intersection over union (MIoU) and average Hausdorff distance (AVD) were used to evaluate segmentation performance. Results revealed that the Dice, MIoU, PA and AVD values of our improved U2-Net were 72.85%, 79.66%, 95.92% and 51.37 mm, respectively, which were comparable to the actual ground truth; the ground truth came from the labeling of clinicians. However, the Dice, MIoU, PA and AVD values of U-Net were 43.19%, 65.57%, 86.22% and 74.82 mm, and those of Res-U-Net were 58.65%, 72.53%, 88.98% and 57.30 mm. Overall, our data suggest our improved U2-Net model might be used for segmentation of ultrasound median neural images.

In recent decades, artificial intelligence has been successively employed in the fields of finance, commerce, and other industries. However, imitating high-level brain functions, such as imagination and inference, pose several challenges as they are relevant to a particular type of noise in a biological neuron network. Probabilistic computing algorithms based on restricted Boltzmann machine and Bayesian inference that use silicon electronics have progressed significantly in terms of mimicking probabilistic inference. However, the quasi-random noise generated from additional circuits or algorithms presents a major challenge for silicon electronics to realize the true stochasticity of biological neuron systems. Artificial neurons based on emerging devices, such as memristors and ferroelectric field-effect transistors with inherent stochasticity can produce uncertain non-linear output spikes, which may be the key to make machine learning closer to the human brain. In this article, we present a comprehensive review of the recent advances in the emerging stochastic artificial neurons (SANs) in terms of probabilistic computing. We briefly introduce the biological neurons, neuron models, and silicon neurons before presenting the detailed working mechanisms of various SANs. Finally, the merits and demerits of silicon-based and emerging neurons are discussed, and the outlook for SANs is presented.

The widespread COVID-19 pandemic has not only posed a major health threat in Taiwan but also has challenged the nursing pedagogy. Both academia and the education industry are calling for a radical change of nursing pedagogy. Under such a call, the present study investigates an online collaborative knowledge co-construction mechanism—Crowdsourcing Collaborative Learning Strategy (CCLS)—to help student nurses acquire and practice functional knowledge on clinical operations targeted to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at anytime and anywhere via the internet service. A t-test on the pre-and-post test between the control and experimental group explained the effectiveness of the CCLS online platform. Two questionnaires were used to explore students’ perception of the effectiveness and the usefulness of the CCLS online platform. The findings suggested the CCLS online platform can help students to revisit their clinical performance via the recorded videos, facilitate student nurses’ self-reflection on their performance, and help student nurses to minimize the academic-practice gap. Participants in this study scored the CCLS online platform as helpful and easy to use during the learning process.

Objectives: The aim of the research is to create an experimental data set of coronal section images of a human head. Methods: The head of a 49-year-old male cadaver was scanned by computed tomography (CT), then perfused with a green filling material via the bilateral common carotid artery, before being frozen and embedded. The head was sectioned along the coronal plane by a computer-controlled 5520 engraving and milling machine, capable of either 0.03-mm or 0.06-mm interspacing. All images were captured with a Canon 5D-Mk III digital camera. Results: A total of 3854 section images were obtained, each with a resolution of 5760 × 3840 pixels. The number of section images at 0.03- and 0.06-mm interspacing were 1437 and 2417, respectively. All the images were stored in JPG and RAW formats. The image size of each RAW format was about 24.5 MB, whereas for JPG format, the equivalent size was about 5.9 MB. All the RAW and JPG images together occupied 117.35 GB of disk space. Conclusions: The interspacing of this data set section was thinner than those of any comparable studies, and the image resolution was higher, too. This data set was also the first to take coronal sections of the human head. The data set contains image information from the smallest structures within the human head and can satisfy the needs of future developments and applications, such as the virtual operation training systems for otolaryngology, ophthalmology, stomatology, and neurosurgery, and help develop medical teaching software and maps.
