Deterministic structure representation of polymers plays a crucial role in developing models for polymer property prediction and polymer design by data-centric approaches. Currently, unique structure representations of polymers, especially the polymers with heteroatomic backbones, are unavailable. In this contribution, we propose a so-called ring repeating unit (RRU) method that can uniquely represent polymers with a broad range of structure diversity. To prove the rationality of RRU-based structure representation for generating feature descriptors, a quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) model for glass transition temperature (Tg) was established for 1321 polyimides with good accuracy (R2 = 0.8793). Comprehensive model validations including external, internal, and Y-random validations were performed, providing Tg prediction result with an average absolute error (AAE) of 19.38 ℃. It is believed that the as-developed RRU method allows for dealing with any macromolecular structure and targeted property, enabling for reliable polymer property prediction and high-performance polymer design by data-driven approaches.

The thermodynamic properties at variable temperature and pressure, such as density (ρ) and viscosity (η) are necessary in chemical process design. The quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) is a quick and accurate method to obtain the properties from a large number of potential ionic liquids (ILs). The QSPR models for ρ and η may have “pseudo-high” robustness validated by leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV) and weakened stability with the unbalanced data point distribution. A rigorous model evaluation method named the leave-one-ion-out cross-validation (LOIO-CV) was proposed to evaluate robustness of ILs QSPR models. Balancing the distribution of data points in ILs, two f(T,P,I)-QSPR models were developed with norm index (I) to predict ρ and η of ILs at variable temperature and pressure. LOIO-CV method can enhance the stability QSPR model in predicting the properties of ILs with new cations and anions, which is essential for data driven design of ILs.

One of the challenges for modelling of polymerization kinetics is the detailed description of the molecular build-up of both linear and non-linear chains, specifically those with many grafts and crosslinks. Such grafted/crosslinked (co)polymers are relevant as emulsifiers, surface-modifying agents, coating materials, and compatibilizers. In the present work, we put forward a coupled matrix-based Monte Carlo (CMMC) concept to be successful in this respect, avoiding computational stiffness. The CMMC concept is illustrated for single phase grafting of polybutadiene (PB) with styrene (St) at 343 K by limiting the St conversion to 30%. Considering literature kinetic parameters, a benchmark for average characteristics as obtainable by deterministic method of moments simulations is first presented to then gradually extend the level of modelling output addressing (i) conventional grafting performance indicators (e.g. the grafting yield and mass ratio); (ii) univariate chain length distributions for all macrospecies types (polystyrene, PB, PB with only T grafts, PB with at least one H graft, etc.); (iii) bivariate St–butadiene distributions showing a compositional drift, due to the kinetic tendency to attack longer chains if they are sufficiently present and the competition between grafting and crosslinking; (iv) the explicit molecular build-up of individual molecules predicting the positioning of the St–Bd and St–St connectivity points and the chain formation history. It is demonstrated that the CMMC tool allows the simulation of the contribution and structure of molecules that are hard to access purely experimentally, so that in the long run, novel structure–property relationships are within reach. It is also showcased that consideration of elementary reactions is highly recommended and that even at 343 K, thermal self-initiation with St and related chain transfer reactions matter for a full appreciation of molecular variations. The current work also opens the pathway to identifying pragmatic equations for the experimentalist and online control benefiting from a detailed CMMC solution under any desired conditions.

Cost-efficient deterministic method of moments solvers, as widely used to calculate average characteristics of chemical processes driven by population variations (e.g., average chain lengths), can be a posteriori extended with approximated solutions delivering distributed properties (e.g., chain length distributions). However, these solutions are rarely verified, specifically for complex systems with many population members and strong coupling, as is the case for industrially relevant free-radical-induced grafting (FRIG) toward graft copolymer (GC) synthesis with monomer unit dependent reactions. FRIG, as studied in the present work with polybutadiene at low styrene conversions, is an important chemical process, for example, the production of compatibilizers and high-impact materials. Deterministic model validation is uniquely performed by benchmarking the low to medium molar mass (MM) results (29 topologies) in the log-molar mass distribution with detailed matrix-based kinetic Monte Carlo simulation output, inherently capable of mapping distributions. The GC product is identified to be a heterogeneous mixture in MM, chemical composition, and molecular topology at any styrene conversion. The molecular structural evolution during GC synthesis is further theoretically related to both one-dimensional size-exclusion chromatography (1D-SEC) and two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) analysis. It is shown that conventional SEC-even in the absence of broadening-is insufficient for GC separation, mainly due to the unavoidable coelution of topologically different GC species. In any case, the parallel running of advanced modeling tools allows for detailed molecular interpretation.

An electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (eATRP) of methyl acrylate (MA) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM-PF6) ionic liquid (IL) was reported. Remarkably, the kinetic results revealed an extremely fast and well controlled polymerization in the presence of tris(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine (Me6TREN). The monomer conversion reached more than 90% within a period of 300 s. Computational and simulation results indicated that the IL induced acceleration of polymerization can be attributed to the increased value of k t / k p 2 compared to the associated literature value. Additionally, polymerizations under different conditions, including ligand types, monomer/IL ratios, catalyst loadings, and targeted degrees of polymerization were explored. All the kinetic plots suggested superfast polymerization rates with good control over molecular weight and dispersity. Furthermore, the livingness of MA polymerization was confirmed by chain extension experiment. This work provides a new insight into eATRP in IL through experimentation and simulation and thus enriches the knowledge of reaction features of eATRP.

A water-soluble organic photoredox catalyst, 3,7-methoxypolyethylene glycol 1-naphthalene-10-phenoxazine (Naph-PXZ-PEG), that can catalyze aqueous organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via oxidative quenching cycle has been reported for the first time. Comparative studies of Naph-PXZ-PEG and EosinY involved aqueous organocatalyzed ATRP systems have been done via polymerization experiment and kinetic modeling approach. Results showed that the polymerization via oxidative quenching cycle in Naph-PXZ-PEG system proceeded much faster and higher initiator efficiency than the polymerization via reductive quenching cycle in Eosin Y system under same conditions. Detailed information of the Naph-PXZ-PEG was presented by experiments and density functional theory (DFT) simulation. A series of kinetics experiments under different catalyst loadings, initiator concentrations, “on-off” switch of light and chain extension have been conducted and confirmed the good controllability of the current system and high end-group fidelity. This work provides a systematic study on developing an effective water soluble organic catalyst for the preparation of the well-defined polymers by a “green” and sustainable ATRP.

A thermo-responsive copolymer with a gas-switchable LCST-type phase transition was synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), followed by post-polymerization functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). Incorporating ionic moieties provides an elevated cloud point of 61 °C. Importantly, both CO2 and SO2 cause a reduction in the cloud point of the polymer solution. The CO2-triggered system can be easily and fully recovered to its initial state by introducing an inert gas (e.g. N2), whereas the SO2-triggered system shows only partial recovery. The pH-dependent phase transition behaviors confirm that the gas bubbling-induced pH changes contribute to the gas-switchable cloud point of P(NIPAM-co-(GMA-ATANa)). In addition, P(NIPAM-co-(GMA-ATA)) (ATA: 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole), a counterpart of P(NIPAM-co-(GMA-ATANa)), was prepared and the relevant solution phase transition behavior was studied. Its cloud point shift in response to gas bubbling and pH adjustment is opposite to that of P(NIPAM-co-(GMA-ATANa)), indicating that the latter does not result from the protonation of amidine groups. Alternatively, a reversible H+-induced decrease in hydrophilicity was thus proposed. This contribution enriches the family of thermo-responsive polymers by introducing gas-sensitive polyelectrolytes and also broadens the scope of gas-responsive smart materials.

Oily water treatment has become an urgent need in our daily life because of its harmful potential to the ecological system. In recent years, functional materials with superwetting or superantiwetting property have experienced a rocketing development due to their applications in various areas, including self-cleaning, anti-icing, printing, water collection, liquid transfer, oil/water separation, and so on. In this regard, recent advances in polymer science hold the promise of fine-tuning the composition and morphology for a targeted design to meet the requirements in specific application fields. This review focused on polymeric materials, especially smart polymers, for controllable oil/water separations. Starting from the fundamental theories and criteria related to the separation mechanisms, different stimuli including pH, solvent, ions, chemicals, temperature, photo, electric, pressure, and dual stimuli for triggering smart oil/water separation processes were summarized. Highlights on polymer types, polymer synthesis approaches, separation materials fabrication method, as well as separation performances were present. Current limitations and future perspective were also given. This review aims to offer deep insights into polymer-based interfacial science and provide guidance for the fabrication of smart polymeric surfaces for oily water separation.

The past decades have witnessed an increasing interest in developing advanced polymerization techniques subjected to external fields. Various physical modulations, such as temperature, light, electricity, magnetic field, ultrasound, and microwave irradiation, are noninvasive means, having superb but distinct abilities to regulate polymerizations in terms of process intensification and spatial and temporal controls. Gas as an emerging regulator plays a distinctive role in controlling polymerization and resembles a physical regulator in some cases. This review provides a systematic overview of seven types of external-field-regulated polymerizations, ranging from chain-growth to step-growth polymerization. A detailed account of the relevant mechanism and kinetics is provided to better understand the role of each external field in polymerization. In addition, given the crucial role of modeling and simulation in mechanisms and kinetics investigation, an overview of model construction and typical numerical methods used in this field as well as highlights of the interaction between experiment and simulation toward kinetics in the existing systems are given. At the end, limitations and future perspectives for this field are critically discussed. This state-of-the-art research progress not only provides the fundamental principles underlying external-field-regulated polymerizations but also stimulates new development of advanced polymerization methods.

The kinetic rate constant of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation represents an important parameter, which is valuable for evaluating the degradation efficiency and ecological risk of pollutants. In this study, the multiple-linear-regression method using quantum chemical and norm descriptors is utilized to develop a room-temperature quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPR) model for kinetic rate constant estimation. The correlation coefficient (R2) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) are 0.8918 and 0.4086 for the training set, as well as 0.9096 and 0.3901 for the test set, respectively, which suggests the as-developed model has good stability and predictability. Applicability domain analysis demonstrates that the model is reliable and generalizable for assessing the -logk·OH of VOCs covering a wide variety of molecular structures. In addition, an external prediction is made to assess the degradation rate constants of nine hydrofluoroethers, which implies the predictability of the model. It is worth noting that the quantum mechanical parameters, i.e., natural population analysis and orbital energy for atoms are introduced to norm descriptors, which expands the number/type of norm descriptors and greatly improves the accuracy of the model. Such combinational quantum chemical and norm descriptors are expected to be used for building accurate and robust models for other chemical properties prediction.

A well-controlled atom transfer radicfal polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) was realized by mechanical mediation (mechanoATRP) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, 50% v/v). High conversions of typically over 90% were achieved. The resulting polymers had well-controlled molecular weights and very low dispersities (Đ = 1.03–1.09). No polymerization of MA was observed under various conditions from bulk up to 33.3% DMSO (v/v) solution. It was found that adding an equivalent volume of DMSO with respect to MA activated the polymerization. This finding suggested that DMSO played a crucial role in the mechanoATRP of MA. DMSO not only improved the solubility of CuBr2 complex but also facilitated an electron transfer process in the mechanical reduction of CuBr2. Mechanoresponsive polymers have garnered significant attention in recent years, due to their great potential application in stress/strain sensing and damage warning. Several reviews of mechanochemistry have been published recently. In this review, we mainly focus on the most established mechanophore, spiropyran (SP), from an engineering perspective. We present a workflow for SP mechanochemistry, applications in various polymeric systems and impacting factors, as well as characterization techniques. Current limitations and future research directions are briefly highlighted in the end. This review aims to offer deep insight into polymer mechanochemistry and provide approaches to study other mechanophores using the example of SP mechanochemistry in polymers.

Metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully achieved in aqueous media for the first time. Polymerization of poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA480) was well controlled (Đ < 1.40) under visible light irradiation using tetrabromofluorescein (Eosin Y) as catalyst and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as electron donor. A validated kinetic model was developed to investigate the process of photoredox catalytic cycle via reductive quenching pathway. Experimental and simulation results showed that electron donor not only had an important influence on the ATRP activation, but also participated in the ATRP deactivation. Furthermore, the effects of water content, catalyst concentration, and degree of polymerization on the polymerization were studied thoroughly by a series of experiments. A challenge for the design of nonlinear polymerization is the full appreciation of the impact of side reactions, demanding the development of modeling techniques to determine the associated kinetic parameters while using the most important experimental responses. Here the combination of computationally inexpensive method of moments (MoM) kinetic simulations and dedicated principal component analysis (PCA) is put forward as a promising strategy to be successful in this respect. Focus is on (radical) vinyl grafting of chains containing unsaturations, selecting styrene (St) as monomer and polybutadiene (PB) as backbone, and low St conversions accounting for diffusional limitations on termination. It is highlighted that the less studied macropropagation cannot be directly ignored and a combined set of experimental responses related to free polystyrene and grafted copolymer (GC) average product properties is recommended for kinetic parameter estimation. This is supported by regression analysis considering in silico generated experimental data compensated for random noise and considering a validated end-chain approximation.

Thermoresponsive random copolymers consisting of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and polymerized ionic liquid (IL) poly(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine acrylate) (PTMGA) were synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT). The reactivity ratios of NIPAM (rNIPAM = 2.11) and TMGA (rTMGA = 0.56) were determined by the extended Kelen–Todus method. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the copolymers were analyzed, which followed the Fox equation very well. The phase transition behaviors of the copolymers in aqueous solution were studied through UV–vis transmission measurements. Their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) ranged from 30.5 to 73.2 °C, depending on the hydrophilic IL content. The apparent pKa related to LCST was determined, and thus the protonation degree was calculated. The hydrophilicity of the copolymers could be regulated by gas treatments. Successful fabrication of mussel-inspired V-shaped copolymer based materials for pH controllable oil/water separation was reported. Triblock copolymer, polydimethylsiloxane-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMS- b -PHEMA- b -PDMAEMA) was designed and synthesized through copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). Hydroxyl-containing PHEMA block enabled the covalent reaction to occur between polymer and polydopamine (PDA) functionalized substrates. The mixed polymer brushes of oleophilic/hydrophobic PDMS and pH-responsive PDMAEMA endowed the substrates with good pH responsive oil/water wettability and stability. As a proof of concept, the functionalized mesh can separate a range of different immiscible oil/water mixtures with high separation efficiency over 98.5% and high oil flux of 8800–9500 L h −1 m −2 and water flux of 7400–7800 L h −1 m −2 . Additionally, the functionalized sponge realized reversible oil capture and release in aqueous media. Because dopamine through self-polymerization can form strong adhesive films on inorganic and organic substrates in alkalescence solution, the method used in current contribution would be also suitable for producing polymer brush functionalized intelligent materials based on other common substrates.

Kinetic insight into photoinduced Fe-based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) involving monomer-mediated photoreduction was performed by modeling approach for the first time. Preliminary numerical analysis of number-average molar mass (Mn) derivation in this specific system was given. Simulation results provided a full picture of reactant concentration and reaction rate throughout the entire polymerization. Methyl 2,3-dibromoisobutyrate (MibBr2) generated from methyl methacrylate (MMA)-mediated photoreduction as the leading factor for the deviation of Mn from theoretical value was confirmed by reaction contributions in α-bromophenylacetate (EBPA) containing system. Reasonable predictions were made with respect to the polymerizations under a variety of initial conditions. Results show that increasing light intensity will shorten transition period and increase steady state polymerization rate; decreasing catalyst loading will cause the decrease in polymerization rate and Mn deviation; varying initiation activity will slightly increase the time to attain steady state of dispersity (Mw/Mn) evolution and enormously change the fraction of reaction contributions; increasing targeted chain length will extend transition period, decrease steady state polymerization rate, increase Mn deviation degree with same reaction contributions, and decrease the time to attain the steady state of Mw/Mn. The numerical analysis presented in this work clearly demonstrates the unique ability of our modeling approach in describing the kinetics of photoinduced Fe-based ATRP of MMA. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2017

A low-ppm-level iron (Fe)-based photoinduced atom-transfer-radical polymerization (ATRP) under visible-light irradiation was developed. Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization with an Fe catalyst was successfully performed in aqueous media for the first time. Three water-soluble ligands [i.e., tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr), tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]amine (TDA), and triphenylphosphine-3,3′,3′′-trisulfonic acid trisodium (TPPSA)] were screened for polymerization in aqueous media. Linear semilogarithmic plots, increasing molecular weights (Mn) with conversion, and low dispersity (Đ < 1.40) were achieved by using a new water-soluble phosphine ligand TPPSA, indicating a well-controlled polymerization. Subsequently, the polymerization kinetics of different catalyst concentrations and the targeted degree of polymerizations were investigated. The applicability of this system to the polymerization of different water-soluble monomers was examined. Furthermore, the polymerization can be regulated by switching the light on and off, which further confirmed its controlled and “living” nature. A successful experiment of chain extension suggested the retention of chain-end functionality. A study of the mechanism showed that the activator (FeIIX2/L) and the additional initiator were generated by the photochemical reduction of FeIIIX3/L in the presence of a monomer. This work provides an environmentally benign ATRP to synthesize well-defined water-soluble materials.

The main challenge in the development of luminescent lanthanide complexes lies in the design of organic ligands. Herein, a carboxyl-terminated aromatic hyperbranched polyester (CHBPE) ligand was designed and synthesized, which has abundant branched end groups for chelating lanthanide ions, strong light-harvesting ability in the UV region, and more importantly, good energy match with the Tb3+ ion. The structure of CHBPE was characterized by MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and UV-Vis absorption measurements. Subsequently, a Tb3+ complex (CHBPE-Tb3+-Phen) based on CHBPE was obtained, in which Phen was used as a co-ligand to protect Tb3+ ions and reduce non-radiative transition of Tb3+ ions. The as-prepared complex was analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, 13C NMR, FTIR and UV-Vis methods. The results demonstrated that both CHBPE and Phen coordinated to Tb3+ ions and a stable chelate structure was formed. The synergistic effect of CHBPE and Phen made the complex exhibit remarkably strong green luminescence corresponding to the Tb3+ ion upon UV excitation. The efficiency of energy transfer (Φsen) from the CHBPE to Tb3+ ion was 55.2%, revealing that CHBPE is well suitable for the sensitization of Tb3+ ions. The absolute quantum efficiency (Φoverall) and luminescence lifetime (τobs) of the complex were 27.5% and 0.28 ms, respectively. The possible energy transfer pathways in the complex system were proposed. The complex is expected to have potential application in the near ultraviolet light emitting diode (NUV-LED).

In this contribution, two well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers, i.e., polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PS-b-PEO-b-PS) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) were synthesized through activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. The as-prepared block copolymers with similar molar mass successfully served as stabilizer for preparing both styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) containing HIPEs. The properties of HIPE and the effects of processing conditions (e.g., type and concentration of stabilizer, shearing rate, and aqueous phase volume) on the morphology of the resulting polyHIPEs were investigated by the rheology and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results show that the block copolymer stabilized HIPEs and the corresponding polyHIPEs possess higher strength compared with the samples stabilized by span80. In addition, PS-based polyHIPEs from the block copolymer stabilized emulsion have an almost closed-cell structure, while PMMA-based polyHIPEs have an open-cell structure. Moreover, it is proven that the concentration of stabilizer plays a critical role in preparing PMMA-based polyHIPEs with high-porosity. It is believed that other functional polymeric porous monoliths can be readily prepared through HIPE templating by using the commonly known PEO-PS block copolymers without the sophisticated surfactant design.
