The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the urgent need for the development of efficient, durable, reusable and recyclable filtration media for the deep-submicron size range. Here we demonstrate a multifunctional filtration platform using porous metallic nanowire foams that are efficient, robust, antimicrobial, and reusable, with the potential to further guard against multiple hazards. We have investigated the foam microstructures, detailing how the growth parameters influence the overall surface area and characteristic feature size, as well as the effects of the microstructures on the filtration performance. Nanogranules deposited on the nanowires during electrodeposition are found to greatly increase the surface area, up to 20 m$^{2}$/g. Surprisingly, in the high surface area regime, the overall surface area gained from the nanogranules has little correlation with the improvement in capture efficiency. However, nanowire density and diameter play a significant role in the capture efficiency of PM$_{0.3}$ particles, as do the surface roughness of the nanowire fibers and their characteristic feature sizes. Antimicrobial tests on the Cu foams show a >99.9995% inactivation efficiency after contacting the foams for 30 seconds. Antiferromagnet is a promising candidate for the next generation spintronic devices, benefiting from its ultrafast dynamics and spontaneous zero stray field. However, the understanding of their ultrafast spin behaviors is lacking due to the challenges of controlling/detecting the quenched net magnetization. Unconventional compensated semiconducting antiferromagnets present strong time-reversal symmetry breaking, spin splitting in the momentum space, and suitable bandgap for optical control/detection. Thus, it is a powerful platform to uncover the ultrafast dynamics of antiferromagnets. Here, we show an exotic wavelength-dependent spin dynamic in the unconventional compensated semiconducting antiferromagnet {\alpha}-MnTe via time-resolved quadratic magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement, where the probing photon energy of the laser matches its bandgap. This direct excitation and detection of distinct magnon modes reveal varying spin behaviors and time characteristics in a broad temperature range. It originates from the spins triggered at different bands of electronic structures and is depicted in an energy transfer model among electrons, phonons, and magnons. Our study of exotic optical properties in this unconventional semiconducting antiferromagnet fulfills the missing information of spin evolution in the time domain and paves the way for its utilization in ultrafast spintronic devices.

We show that the magnetic properties of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) can be captured by \textit{ab initio} calculations within the coherent potential approximation, where the atomic details of the high-entropy mixing are considered as an effective medium that possesses the translational symmetry of the lattice. This is demonstrated using the face-centered cubic (FCC) phase of $\textrm{FeCoNiMnCu}$ and the $L1_0$ phase of $\textrm{(FeCoNiMnCu)Pt}$ by comparing the density functional theory (DFT) results with the experimental values. Working within the first Brillouin zone and the primitive unit cell, we show that DFT can capture the smooth profile of magnetic properties such as the saturation magnetization, the Curie temperature and the magnetic anisotropy, using only a sparse set of sampling points in the vast compositional space. The smooth profiles given by DFT indeed follow the experimental trend, demonstrating the promising potential of using machine learning to explore the magnetic properties of HEAs, by establishing reasonably large datasets with high-throughput calculations using density-functional theory.

Cr$_2$Te$_3$ is a ferromagnetic, quasi-two-dimensional layered material with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, strong spin-orbit coupling, and non-trivial band topology. The non-trivial topology results in an intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) that switches sign under filling and biaxial strain. Thin films can exhibit half metallicity. Using density functional theory combined with maximally localized Wannier functions, we reveal the physical origins of the sensitivity of the sign of the AHC to strain and filling, and we determine the effect of surface termination on the half metallicity. We find that thin films terminated on the Te layers are the most energetically stable, but only the thin films terminated on both sides with the partially occupied Cr layers are half metals. In bulk Cr$_2$Te$_3$, the sensitivity of the sign of the AHC to strain and filling results from the complex Fermi surface comprised of three bands. Filling of local minima and bands near anti-crossings alters the local Berry curvature consistent with the negative to positive switching of the AHC. Similarly, strain depopulates a local minimum, shifts a degenerate point closer to the Fermi energy, and causes two spin-orbit split bands to reverse their order. These findings provide a physical understanding of the evolution of the Berry phase, AHC, and half-metallicity in Cr$_2$Te$_3$., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The vast high entropy alloy (HEA) composition space is promising for discovery of new material phases with unique properties. We explore the potential to achieve rare-earth-free high magnetic anisotropy materials in single-phase HEA thin films. Thin films of FeCoNiMnCu sputtered on thermally oxidized Si/SiO$_{2}$ substrates at room temperature are magnetically soft, with a coercivity on the order of 10 Oe. After post-deposition rapid thermal annealing (RTA), the films exhibit a single face-centered-cubic phase, with an almost 40-fold increase in coercivity. Inclusion of 50 at.% Pt in the film leads to ordering of a single L1$_{0}$ high entropy intermetallic phase after RTA, along with high magnetic anisotropy and 3 orders of magnitude coercivity increase. We theoretically show that the carrier transport in monolayer Fe3GeTe2 experiences a transition between anomalous Hall effect and spin Hall effect when the spin polarization of disorders switches between out-of-plane and in-plane. These Hall effects are allowed when the magnetization is polarized in-plane, breaking the C3 rotation symmetry. The transition originates from the selection rule of spin scattering, the strong spin-orbit coupling, and the van Hove singularities near the Fermi surface. The scattering selection rule tolerates the sign change of the disorder spin, which provides a convenient method to detect the switching of antiferromagnetic insulators regardless of the interfacial roughness in a heterostructure. This provides a convenient platform for the study of 2D spintronics through various van-der-Waals heterostructures.

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is the antisymmetric part of the exchange interaction between neighboring local spins, winds the spin manifold and can stabilize non-trivial topological spin textures. Since topology is a robust information carrier, characterization techniques that can extract the DMI magnitude are important for the discovery and optimization of spintronic materials. Existing experimental techniques for quantitative determination of DMI, such as high-resolution magnetic imaging of spin textures and measurement of magnon or transport properties, are time consuming and require specialized instrumentation. Here we show that a convolutional neural network can extract the DMI magnitude from minor hysteresis loops, or magnetic "fingerprints" of a material. These hysteresis loops are readily available by conventional magnetometry measurements. This provides a convenient tool to investigate topological spin textures for next-generation information processing.

The interplay between dimensionality and topology manifests in magnetism via both exotic texture morphology and novel dynamics. A free magnetic skyrmion exhibits the skyrmion Hall effect under electric currents. Once it is confined in one-dimensional (1D) channels, the skyrmion Hall effect would be suppressed, and the current-driven skyrmion speed should be boosted by the non-adiabatic spin transfer torque \b{eta}. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that stripes of a spatially modulated spin helix serve as natural 1D channels to restrict skyrmion. Using FeGe as a benchmark, an interstitial skyrmion is created by geometry notch and further moves steadily without the skyrmion Hall effect. The slope of the current-velocity curve for 1D skyrmion is enhanced almost by an order of magnitude owing to a large \b{eta} in FeGe. This feature is also observed in other topological defects. Utilizing the 1D skyrmion dynamics would be a highly promising route to implement topological spintronic devices.

Interconnected magnetic nanowire (NW) networks offer a promising platform for 3-dimensional (3D) information storage and integrated neuromorphic computing. Here we report discrete propagation of magnetic states in interconnected Co nanowire networks driven by magnetic field and current, manifested in distinct magnetoresistance (MR) features. In these networks, when only a few interconnected NWs were measured, multiple MR kinks and local minima were observed, including a significant minimum at a positive field during the descending field sweep. Micromagnetic simulations showed that this unusual feature was due to domain wall (DW) pinning at the NW intersections, which was confirmed by off-axis electron holography imaging. In a complex network with many intersections, sequential switching of nanowire sections separated by interconnects was observed, along with stochastic characteristics. The pinning/depinning of the DWs can be further controlled by the driving current density. Magnetic transition metal chalcogenides form an emerging platform for exploring spin-orbit driven Berry phase phenomena owing to the nontrivial interplay between topology and magnetism. Here we show that the anomalous Hall effect in pristine Cr2Te3 thin films manifests a unique temperature-dependent sign reversal at nonzero magnetization, resulting from the momentum-space Berry curvature as established by first-principles simulations. The sign change is strain tunable, enabled by the sharp and well-defined substrate/film interface in the quasi-two-dimensional Cr2Te3 epitaxial films, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry. This Berry phase effect further introduces hump-shaped Hall peaks in pristine Cr2Te3 near the coercive field during the magnetization switching process, owing to the presence of strain-modulated magnetic domains. Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co)n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Neel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capping layer. We also observe the chiral evolution of a skyrmion during the DMI switching, where no significant topological protection is found as the skyrmion winding number varies. This corresponds to a minimum energy cost of < 1 attojoule during the skyrmion chirality switching. Our results demonstrate the detailed chirality evolution within skyrmions during the DMI sign switching, which is relevant to practical applications of skyrmionic devices., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We show that the quantum geometry of the Fermi surface can be numerically described by a 3-dimensional discrete quantum manifold. This approach not only avoids singularities in the Fermi sea, but it also enables the precise computation of the intrinsic Hall conductivity resolved in spin, as well as any other local properties of the Fermi surface. The method assures numerical accuracy when the Fermi level is arbitrarily close to singularities, and it remains robust when Kramers degeneracy is protected by symmetry. The approach is demonstrated by calculating the anomalous Hall and spin Hall conductivities of a 2-band lattice model of a Weyl semimetal and a full-band ab-initio model of zincblende GaAs.

Free-standing, interconnected metallic nanowire networks with density as low as 40 mg/cm^{3} have been achieved over cm-scale areas, using electrodeposition into polycarbonate membranes that have been ion-tracked at multiple angles. Networks of interconnected magnetic nanowires further provide an exciting platform to explore 3-dimensional nanomagnetism, where their structure, topology and frustration may be used as additional degrees of freedom to tailor the materials properties. New magnetization reversal mechanisms in cobalt networks are captured by the first-order reversal curve method, which demonstrate the evolution from strong demagnetizing dipolar interactions to intersections-mediated domain wall pinning and propagation, and eventually to shape-anisotropy dominated magnetization reversal. The promise of high-density and low-energy-consumption devices motivates the search for layered structures that stabilize chiral spin textures such as topologically protected skyrmions. At the same time, layered structures provide a new platform for the discovery of new physics and effects. Recently discovered long-range intrinsic magnetic orders in the two-dimensional van der Waals materials offer new opportunities. Here we demonstrate the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and N\'eel-type skyrmions are induced at the WTe2/Fe3GeTe2 interface. Fe3GeTe2 is a ferromagnetic material with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate that the strong spin orbit interaction in 1T'-WTe2 does induce a large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at the interface with Fe3GeTe2 due to the inversion symmetry breaking to stabilize skyrmions. Transport measurements show the topological Hall effect in this heterostructure for temperatures below 100 K. Furthermore, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy is used to directly image N\'eel-type skyrmions along with aligned and stripe-like domain structure. This interfacial coupling induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is estimated to have a large energy of 1.0 mJ/m^2, which can stabilize the N\'eel-type skyrmions in this heterostructure. This is a short note presenting a repeated experiment of the half-quantized transport signature given by Majorana chiral modes living in a heterostructure formed by an s-wave superconductor and a quantum-anomalous-Hall insulator.

The singular density of states and the two Fermi wavevectors resulting from a ring-shaped or "Mexican hat" valence band give rise to unique trends in the charged impurity scattering rates and charged impurity limited mobilities. Ring shaped valence bands are common features of many monolayer and few-layer two-dimensional materials including the III-VI materials GaS, GaSe, InS, and InSe. The wavevector dependence of the screening, calculated within the random phase approximation, is so strong that it is the dominant factor determining the overall trends of the scattering rates and mobilities with respect to temperature and hole density. Charged impurities placed on the substrate and in the 2D channel are considered. The different wavevector dependencies of the bare Coulomb potentials alter the temperature dependence of the mobilities. Moving the charged impurities 5 $\AA$ from the center of the channel to the substrate increases the mobility by an order of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We show that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in alpha-MnTe impacts the transport behavior by generating an anisotropic valence-band splitting, resulting in four spin-polarized pockets near Gamma. A minimal k-dot-p model is constructed to capture this splitting by group theory analysis, a tight-binding model and ab initio calculations. The model is shown to describe the rotation symmetry of the zero-field planer Hall effect (PHE). The upper limit of the PHE percentage is shown to be fundamentally determined by the band shape, and is quantitatively estimated to be roughly 31% by first principles.

Half-integer conductance, the signature of Majorana edge modes, has been recently observed in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor heterostructure. Here, we analyze a scheme for gate-tunable control of degenerate ground states of Majorana zero modes (MZM) in thin film topological superconductors. Gating the top surface of a thin film magnetic topological insulator controls the topological phase in the region underneath the gate. The voltage of the transition depends on the gate width, and narrower gates require larger voltages. Relatively long gates are required, on the order of a micron, to prevent hybridization of the end modes and to allow the creation of MZMs at low gate voltages. Applying a voltage to T{shaped and I{shaped gates localizes the Majoranas at their ends. This scheme may provide a facile method for implementing quantum gates for topological quantum computing.

Ferromagnetism in topological insulators (TIs) opens a topologically non-trivial exchange band gap, providing an exciting platform to manipulate the topological order through an external magnetic field. Here, we experimentally show that the surface of an antiferromagnetic thin film can independently control the topological order of the top and the bottom surface states of a TI thin film through proximity couplings. During the magnetization reversal in a field scan, two intermediate spin configurations stem from unsynchronized magnetic switchings of the top and the bottom AFM/TI interfaces. These magnetic configurations are shown to result in new topological phases with non-zero Chern numbers for each surface, introducing two counter-propagating chiral edge modes inside the exchange gap. This change in the number of transport channels, as the result of the topological transitions, induces antisymmetric magneto-resistance spikes during the magnetization reversal. With the high Neel ordering temperature provided by the antiferromagnetic layers, the signature of the induced topological transition persists in transport measurements up to a temperature of around 90 K, a factor of three over the Curie temperature in a typical magnetically doped TI thin film.

After the recognition of the possibility to implement Majorana fermions using the building blocks of solid-state matters, the detection of this peculiar particle has been an intense focus of research. Here we experimentally demonstrate a collection of Majorana fermions living in a one-dimensional transport channel at the boundary of a superconducting quantum anomalous Hall insulator thin film. A series of topological phase changes are controlled by the reversal of the magnetization, where a half-integer quantized conductance plateau (0.5e2/h) is observed as a clear signature of the Majorana phase. This transport signature can be well repeated during many magnetic reversal sweeps, and can be tracked at different temperatures, providing a promising evidence of the chiral Majorana edge modes in the system., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

The energy of exchange coupled antiferromagnetic insulators (AFMIs) is a periodic function of the relative in-plane orientation of the N\'{e}el vector fields. We show that this leads to oscillations in the relative magnetization of exchange coupled AFMIs separated by a thin metallic barrier. These oscillations pump a spin current ($I_{S}$) through the metallic spacer that is proportional to the rate of change of the relative in-plane orientation of the N\'{e}el vector fields. By considering spin-transfer torque induced by a spin chemical potential ($V_{S}$) at one of the interfaces, we predict non-Ohmic $I_{S}$-$V_{S}$ characteristics of AFMI exchange coupled hetero-structures, which leads to a non-local voltage across a spin-orbit coupled metallic spacer.

The intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) originates from the topology of the Bloch bands in momentum space. The duality between real space and momentum space calls for a spin Hall effect induced from a real space topology in analogy to the topological Hall effect (THE) of skyrmions. We theoretically demonstrate the topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) in which a pure transverse spin current is generated from a skyrmion spin texture.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures of potential interest for future information storage applications, and for such purposes, the control and understanding of single skyrmion creation is required. A scheme is analyzed to create single N\'{e}el-type and Bloch-type skyrmions in helimagnetic thin films utilizing the dynamical excitations induced by the Oersted field and the spin transfer torque given by a vertically injected spin-polarized current. A topological charge analysis using a lattice version of the topological charge provides insight into the locally triggered transition from a trivial to a non-trivial topological spin texture of the N\'{e}el or Bloch type skyrmion. The topological protection of the magnetic skyrmion is determined by the symmetric Heisenberg exchange energy. The critical switching current density is $\sim10^{7}\thinspace\textrm{A/cm}^{2}$, which decreases with the easy-plane type uniaxial anisotropy and thermal fluctuations. In-plane spin polarization of the injected current performs better than out-of-plane polarization, and it provides ultrafast switching times (within 100 ps) and reliable switching outcomes.
