Abstract

Acidogenic fermentation of chicken manure (CM) for production and recovery of volatile fatty acids (VFA) is an interesting biological waste-to-value approach compared to benchmark organic waste management strategies. Considering the wide range of high value applications of VFA, a semi-continuous immersed anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was applied to boost VFA productivity and yield, while reducing downstream processing stages assisting the recovery of VFA. In this regard, the effect of parameters such as pH and organic loading rates (OLR) on the overall bioconversion and filtration performance was investigated. Thermal-shocked CM was applied both as inoculum and substrate. A very high VFA yield (0.90 g-VFA/g-VS) was obtained in the treatment with no pH control (~8.2) at an OLR of 2 g-VS/(L·d), presenting 24% higher yield compared to that of the controlled pH. Batch assays further demonstrated the enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis activities at weak alkaline conditions. A long-term (78 days) fermentation and filtration was successfully performed, where stable membrane filtration performance was experienced for about 50 days under high-solid (suspended solid of 37–45 g/L) and high flux (20 L/(m2·h)) conditions. Results suggest that AnMBR of CM is a feasible and promising process for VFA production and recovery.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a common and refractory neurological disorder, but the neuronal regulatory mechanisms of epileptogenesis remain largely unclear. Activity-dependent transcription of genes for neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been shown to promote epileptogenesis; however, little is known about factors that may act as intrinsic, homeostatic or counterbalancing mechanisms. Using rodent models, here we show that limbic seizure activity upregulated NRG1-ErbB4 signaling and that epileptogenesis was inhibited by infusing NRG1 intracerebrally but exacerbated by neutralizing endogenous NRG1 with soluble ErbB4 extracellular domain, by inhibiting ErbB4 activation or by deleting the Erbb4 gene. Furthermore, specific depletion of ErbB4 in parvalbumin-expressing interneurons abolished NRG1-mediated inhibition of epileptogenesis and promoted kindling progression, resulting in increased spontaneous seizures and exuberant mossy fiber sprouting. In contrast, depleting ErbB4 in CaMKII?-positive pyramidal neurons had no effect. Thus, NRG1-induced activation of ErbB4 in parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory interneurons may serve as a critical endogenous negative-feedback mechanism to suppress limbic epileptogenesis. Abstract

Polycrystalline pyrochlore Lu2Ti2O7 pellets are irradiated with 600-keV Kr3+ ions up to a fluence of 1.45 × 1016 Kr3+/cm2. Irradiation induced structural modifications are examined by using grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The GIXRD reveals that amorphous fraction increases with the increase of fluences up to 2 × 1015 Kr3+/cm2, and the results are explained with a direct-impact model. However, when the irradiation fluence is higher than 2 × 1015 Kr3+/cm2, the amorphous fraction reaches a saturation of ∼80%. Further TEM observations imply that nano-crystal is formed with a diameter of ∼10 nm within the irradiation layer at a fluence of 4 × 1015 Kr3+/cm2. No full amorphization is achieved even at the highest fluence of 1.45 × 1016 Kr3+/cm2 (∼36 displacement per atom). The high irradiation resistance of pyrochlore Lu2Ti2O7 at higher fluence is explained on the basis of enhanced radiation tolerance of nano-crystal structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
