2. Magnetic surface reconstruction in the van-der-Waals antiferromagnet Fe$_{1+x}$Te

Abstract

Fe$_{1+x}$Te is a two dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet that becomes superconducting on anion substitution on the Te site. The parent phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te is sensitive to the amount of interstitial iron situated between the iron-tellurium layers displaying collinear magnetic order coexisting with low temperature metallic resistivity for small concentrations of interstitial iron $x$ and helical magnetic order for large values of $x$. While this phase diagram has been established through scattering [see for example E. E. Rodriguez $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. B ${\bf{84}}$, 064403 (2011) and S. R\"ossler $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. B ${\bf{84}}$, 174506 (2011)], recent scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements [C. Trainer $\textit{et al.}$ Sci. Adv. ${\bf{5}}$, eaav3478 (2019)] have observed a different magnetic structure for small interstitial iron concentrations $x$ with a significant canting of the magnetic moments along the crystallographic $c$ axis of $\theta$=28 $\pm$ 3$^{\circ}$. In this paper, we revisit the magnetic structure of Fe$_{1.09}$Te using spherical neutron polarimetry and scanning tunnelling microscopy to search for this canting in the bulk phase and compare surface and bulk magnetism. The results show that the bulk magnetic structure of Fe$_{1.09}$Te is consistent with collinear in-plane order ($\theta=0$ with an error of $\sim$ 5$^{\circ}$). Comparison with scanning tunnelling microscopy on a series of Fe$_{1+x}$Te samples reveals that the surface exhibits a magnetic surface reconstruction with a canting angle of the spins of $\theta=29.8^{\circ}$. We suggest that this is a consequence of structural relaxation of the surface layer resulting in an out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Abstract

In a superconductor that lacks inversion symmetry, the spatial part of the Cooper pair wave function has a reduced symmetry, allowing for the mixing of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing channels and thus providing a pathway to a non-trivial superconducting state. Materials with a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and with strong spin-orbit coupling are a platform to realize these possibilities. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of high quality crystals of Sn$_4$As$_3$, with non-centrosymmetric unit cell ($R3m$). We have characterised the normal and superconducting state using a range of methods. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a multiband Fermi surface and the presence of two surface states, confirmed by Density-functional theory calculations. Specific heat measurements reveal a superconducting critical temperature of $T_c\sim 1.14$ K and an upper critical magnetic field of $H_c\gtrsim 7$ mT, which are both confirmed by ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Abstract

The interaction of water with TiO2 is crucial to many of its practical applications, including photocatalytic water splitting. Following the first demonstration of this phenomenon 40 years ago there have been numerous studies of the rutile single-crystal TiO2(110) interface with water. This has provided an atomic-level understanding of the water-TiO2 interaction. However, nearly all of the previous studies of water/TiO2 interfaces involve water in the vapour phase. Here, we explore the interfacial structure between liquid water and a rutile TiO2(110) surface pre-characterized at the atomic level. Scanning tunnelling microscopy and surface X-ray diffraction are used to determine the structure, which is comprised of an ordered array of hydroxyl molecules with molecular water in the second layer. Static and dynamic density functional theory calculations suggest that a possible mechanism for formation of the hydroxyl overlayer involves the mixed adsorption of O2 and H2O on a partially defected surface. The quantitative structural properties derived here provide a basis with which to explore the atomistic properties and hence mechanisms involved in TiO2 photocatalysis.

Abstract

Materials with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have in recent years become a subject of intense research due to their potential applications in spintronics and quantum information technology. In particular, in systems which break inversion symmetry, SOC facilitates the Rashba-Dresselhaus effect, leading to a lifting of spin degeneracy in the bulk and intricate spin textures of the Bloch wave functions. Here, by combining angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) and low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements with relativistic first-principles band structure calculations, we examine the role of SOC in single crystals of noncentrosymmetric BiPd. We report the detection of several Dirac surface states, one of which exhibits an extremely large spin splitting. Unlike the surface states in inversion-symmetric systems, the Dirac surface states of BiPd have completely different properties at opposite faces of the crystal and are not trivially linked by symmetry. The spin-splitting of the surface states exhibits a strong anisotropy by itself, which can be linked to the low in-plane symmetry of the surface termination., Comment: 6 page letter, + supplementary material

8. Scanning probe and spectroscopy studies of rutile TiO2(110)

Abstract

In this thesis, surface science techniques were employed to study the chemistry of rutile TiO2(110). Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) have been used to determine the origin of the band-gap state in rutile TiO2(110). By employing electron bombardment to vary the Ob-vac density while monitoring the band-gap state with UPS, we demonstrate that Ob-vac make dominant contribution to the photoemission peak and that is magnitude is directly proportional to the Ob-vac density. CO adsorption on the Pd/TiO2(110) surface was investigated with synchrotron radiation spectroscopies and STM. The Pd islands, which were grown by physical vapour deposition (PVD) of Pd onto the TiO2(110) substrate at ~800 K, had a pseudo-hexagonal shape and were not encapsulated with Ti^n+ (n<4) species from the substrate. In addition, it was found that CO molecules bond vertically and form various ordered overlayers on the Pd(111) islands. O2 adsorption on the cross-linked TiO2(110)-(1x2) surface was investigated with XPS, UPS and STM. The introduction of a small amount of O2 leads to a drastic reduction in the number of the Ti3+ species at the topmost surface layers and the band-gap state intensity, as well as a noticeable rise in the surface workfunction. In STM, O2 and its related molecules were found to preferably adsorb at the centre of the (1x2) strands. Current imaging tunnelling spectroscopy (CITS) was also performed on the same surface at 78 K. It was found that the densities of the two occupied states, one at -0.7 V and and another at -1.3 V, vary between different features on the surface. Moreover, whilst having less-populated occupied states, the cross-links possess an empty state at 1.2 V which cannot be detected anywhere else. This work will be compared with theoretical calculations to elucidate the geometric structure of the cross-link TiO2(110)-(1x2) surface.

11. Size and Shape Dependence of the Electronic Structure of Gold Nanoclusters on TiO2

Abstract

Understanding the mechanism behind the superior catalytic power of single- or few-atom heterogeneous catalysts has become an important topic in surface chemistry. This is particularly the case for gold, with TiO2 being an efficient support. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy with theoretical calculations to investigate the adsorption geometry and local electronic structure of several-atom Au clusters on rutile TiO2(110), with the clusters fabricated by controlled manipulation of single atoms. Our study confirms that Au1 and Au2 clusters prefer adsorption at surface O vacancies. Au3 clusters adsorb at O vacancies in a linear-chain configuration parallel to the surface; in the absence of O vacancies they adsorb at Ti5c sites with a structure of a vertically pointing upright triangle. We find that both the electronic structure and cluster-substrate charge transfer depend critically on the cluster size, bonding configuration, and local environment. This suggests the possibility of engineering cluster selectivity for specific catalytic reactions.

Abstract

Objectives Uterine carcinosarcoma (UCS) is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis and a paucity of evidence on treatment. The objective was to review the characteristics, treatment and outcomes of UCS cases across two gynaeoncology units and five private gynaeoncology practices in Melbourne. Methods UCS cases were identified from hysterectomy pathology records between 1994 and 2020 inclusive. Patient characteristics, histopathological stage, adjuvant therapy, recurrence and survival status were extracted from patient records. Results 208 cases of UCS were identified. The overall recurrence rate was 26.0% and the overall death rate was 60.1%. Increasing age at diagnosis was associated with an increased risk of death (adjusted OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.08, p=0.019). Risk of death was highest in Stage III disease (adjusted OR 4.37, 95% CI 1.67-11.40). Recurrence was a strong determinant of death, with an adjusted OR of 7.58 (p<0.001). Conclusions In this relatively large homogenous cohort of UCS cases, significant predictors for survival included age at diagnosis, stage of disease and recurrence.

Abstract

Controlling spin wave excitations in magnetic materials underpins the burgeoning field of magnonics. Yet, little is known about how magnons interact with the conduction electrons of itinerant magnets, or how this interplay can be controlled. Via a surface-sensitive spectroscopic approach, we demonstrate a strong electron–magnon coupling at the Pd-terminated surface of the delafossite oxide PdCoO2, where a polar surface charge mediates a Stoner transition to itinerant surface ferromagnetism. We show how the coupling is enhanced sevenfold with increasing surface disorder, and concomitant charge carrier doping, becoming sufficiently strong to drive the system into a polaronic regime, accompanied by a significant quasiparticle mass enhancement. Our study thus sheds light on electron–magnon interactions in solid-state materials, and the ways in which these can be controlled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Control of emergent magnetic orders in correlated electron materials promises new opportunities for applications in spintronics. For their technological exploitation, it is important to understand the role of surfaces and interfaces to other materials and their impact on the emergent magnetic orders. Here, we demonstrate for iron telluride, the nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron chalcogenide superconductors, determination and manipulation of the surface magnetic structure by low-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. Iron telluride exhibits a complex structural and magnetic phase diagram as a function of interstitial iron concentration. Several theories have been put forward to explain the different magnetic orders observed in the phase diagram, which ascribe a dominant role either to interactions mediated by itinerant electrons or to local moment interactions. 38. Overcoming technical challenges in a total laparoscopic hysterectomy of a large globular fibroid uterus.

Abstract

This is a video of a total laparoscopic hysterectomy performed on a 46-year-old woman which presents multiple technical challenges. We aim to demonstrate several techniques employed to overcome these difficulties in order to complete the procedure laparoscopically. The patient was an obese woman who had previously had two caesarean sections. She presented with a history of worsening pelvic pain, menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea despite her ongstanding use of the combined oral contraceptive pill. On examination, there was a palpable 18-week-size mass arising from the pelvis to just below the level of the umbilicus. A pelvic ultrasound revealed this to be a large intramural fibroid with cavity compression. Intraoperatively, the bladder was adherent to the lower segment, requiring extensive adhesiolysis. Following ligation of the uterine vessels, a subtotal hysterectomy was performed to facilitate access to the vault. A McCartney tube was introduced to enable the colpotomy. Due to the large size and globular shape of the uterus, it could not be accommodated within the pelvis, hence rendering vaginal morcellation and retrieval impossible. Therefore, the specimen underwent power morcellation abdominally. Haemostasis was confirmed and routine closure was performed. At histopathological examination, the specimen weighed 490 g and the presence of uterine leiomyomata was confirmed. The case demonstrates the potential complexities that may emerge during procedures on large fibroid uteri. The awareness of a variety of surgical techniques and the availability of specialized equipment, together with judicious intraoperative problem-solving and decision-making, enabled this patient to undergo a safe and successful minimally invasive operation.

43. Illicit drug use and acute kidney injury in patients admitted to hospital with rhabdomyolysis.

Abstract

Background: Severe rhabdomyolysis is associated with acute kidney injury, but it is unclear if patients developing rhabdomyolysis after illicit drug use have a higher risk of acute kidney injury compared to other causes. Aim(s): To provide a descriptive analysis of patients admitted with rhabdomyolysis, with a focus on illicit drug use, and to determine if illicit drug use was an independent predictor for acute kidney injury or renal replacement therapy. Method(s): We conducted a 5-year cohort study of patients admitted to Monash Health, a tertiary referral hospital network. We identified adult patients with muscle injury from ICD-10 AM codes, serum creatine kinase level greater than 1000 U/mL, and a clinical history consistent with rhabdomyolysis. We determined the prevalence and type of illicit drug involved and determined the association between illicit drug use and renal outcomes by logistic regression. Result(s): Of 643 patients, illicit drug use was identified in 12%. Acute kidney injury developed in 51%, and 5% required renal replacement therapy. Compared to the rest of the cohort, patients who used illicit drugs were younger and had higher peak serum creatine kinase, and developed a higher severity of acute kidney injury. In multivariable analysis, the factors associated with acute kidney injury were illicit drug use, peak creatine kinase, cardiovascular disease, concurrent sepsis and a clinically-evident pressure injury. Chronic kidney disease and need for fasciotomy were additional risk factors for renal replacement therapy. Conclusion(s): Illicit drug use was associated with acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy independent of creatine kinase levels.Copyright © 2019 Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Abstract

Background & Aims The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can interact with antiviral treatment or influence health‐seeking behaviour. We aimed to study the use of individual CAM modalities in CHB and explore determinants of use, particularly migration‐related, socio‐economic and clinical factors. Methods A total of 436 CHB outpatients who attended the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease in 2015‐2016 were included in this cross‐sectional study. Using the comprehensive I‐CAM questionnaire and health records, data were collected on socio‐demographic and clinical variables and on usage of 16 CAM modalities in the last year. Results Sixty percent of patients were male, 74% were Asian and 46% were using antiviral treatment. Three‐hundred and nine (71%) patients used CAM. Vitamin/mineral preparations (45% of patients) were most commonly used. Overall CAM use and the specific use of potentially injurious CAM, such as green tea extract (9.2%) and St. John's wort (0.2%), were not associated with liver disease severity. Female sex, family history of CHB, lower serum HBV DNA, and higher socio‐economic status were independently associated with bio‐holistic CAM use, the clinically most‐relevant CAM group (P < 0.05); ethnicity, antiviral therapy use and liver disease severity were not. Conclusions CAM use among CHB patients was extensive, especially use of vitamin and mineral preparations, but without direct influence on liver disease severity. Bio‐holistic CAM use appeared to be associated with socio‐economic status rather than with ethnicity or liver disease severity. Despite the rare use of hepatotoxins, physicians should actively inquire about it.

Abstract

In a superconductor that lacks inversion symmetry, the spatial part of the Cooper pair wave function has a reduced symmetry, allowing for the mixing of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing channels and thus providing a pathway to a non-trivial superconducting state. Materials with a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and with strong spin–orbit coupling are a platform to realize these possibilities. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of high quality crystals of Sn4As3, with non-centrosymmetric unit cell (R3m). We have characterised the normal and superconducting states using a range of methods. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a multiband Fermi surface and the presence of two surface states, confirmed by density-functional theory calculations. Specific heat measurements reveal a superconducting critical temperature of Tc ∼ 1.14 K and an upper critical magnetic field of μ0Hc ≳ 7 mT, which are both confirmed by ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows a fully formed superconducting gap, consistent with conventional s-wave superconductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Medium energy ion scattering and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy are used to investigate the depth of the interfacial reaction of Hf-silicate film. The interfacial reaction is critically affected by the film thickness and the mole fraction of HfO2 in silicate film. The interfacial compressive strain generated at the surface of the Si substrate is dependent on the film thickness during the postannealing process in film with a thickness of ∼4 nm. Finally, the phase separation phenomenon demonstrates critically different behaviors at different film thicknesses and stoichiometries because the diffusion of Si from interface to surface is dependent on these factors. 50. Uterine carcinosarcoma: Treatments and outcomes over 23 years.

Abstract

Introduction Uterine carcinosarcoma (UC), previously known as malignant mixed mullerian tumour (MMMT), is a rare uterine neoplasm containing both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. It is an aggressive subtype of endometrial carcinoma associated with late diagnosis and poor prognosis, representing less than 5% of all uterine malignancies while accounting for more than 15% of uterine cancer related deaths. Due to the relatively low incidence of cases, the optimal management of these patients following primary surgical treatment remains uncertain. Objective To review the characteristics, treatment and outcomes of a cohort of cases of UC. Methods 92 cases of UC were identified from a retrospective observational study of patients whose primary operations were performed by four gynaeoncologists at Monash Health from 1994 to 2016 inclusive. Patient characteristics, histopathology reports, type(s) of adjuvant therapy, presence of recurrence and survival status were extracted from patient records. Staging was determined based on histopathology using the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system. Results 33 (36%) patients were diagnosed with Stage I UC, 15 (16%) with Stage II, 27 (29%) with Stage III and 17 (18%) with Stage IV. The mean age at the time of primary surgery was 69.97 years, and the mean age at death was 73 years. There was an overall recurrence rate of 14% and death rate of 49%. The association between various patient, disease and treatment factors with survival was analysed. Age at diagnosis and stage of disease were both significant predictors of survival odds, with stage IV UC conferring the highest odds of death compared to stage I (OR 12.5, 95% CI 2-79.2), and increasing age at diagnosis demonstrating a small but significant increase in odds ratio for death (OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.005-1.12).
