Abstract Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic condition with an increasing incidence in Japan. Difamilast and delgocitinib are both new topical drugs for AD proven to be efficacious and safe in phases 2 and 3 clinical trials in Japan. However, there are no head-to-head trials comparing their efficacy and safety. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of patients by severity and compare the clinical efficacy and safety of difamilast with delgocitinib among patients with moderate-to-severe AD using a matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC). Methods Phase 3 clinical trials of difamilast and delgocitinib for treating AD were included. The trials had similar designs but differed in baseline population characteristics. Anchored MAIC was used to align the baseline characteristics and calculate clinical outcomes. The primary outcome was to determine severity stages of the proportion of patients with AD through Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), while the secondary outcome included comparing other clinical efficacy and safety of difamilast with delgocitinib. Results A total of 340 patients were selected (170 each received difamilast and placebo) from the difamilast trial, with 158 (106 received delgocitinib; 52 received placebo) from the delgocitinib trial for the analysis. After matching patients from the difamilast trial with those from the delgocitinib trial, the effective sample sizes (ESS) reduced to 32.7–43.3% of the original difamilast (treatment/placebo) patients. At week 4, the ESS in the difamilast group demonstrated no statistically significant differences in the distribution of AD severity stages, as per EASI scores, compared with the delgocitinib group. In addition, no significant differences were found in modified EASI (mEASI) scores, mEASI 50 and 75 scores, and safety outcomes between the two treatments. Conclusions The anchored MAIC analysis indicates that difamilast treatment, like delgocitinib, is a useful option for the treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe AD in Japan.

IntroductionAcne vulgaris, one of the most common skin conditions, affects up to 85% of late adolescents, currently no universally accepted assessment system. The biomechanical properties of skin provide valuable information for the assessment and management of skin conditions. Wave-based optical coherence elastography (OCE) quantitatively assesses these properties of tissues by analyzing induced elastic wave velocities. However, velocity estimation methods require significant expertise and lengthy image processing times, limiting the clinical translation of OCE technology. Recent advances in machine learning offer promising solutions to simplify velocity estimation process.MethodsIn this study, we proposed a novel end-to-end deep-learning model, named velocity prediction network (VP-Net), aiming to accurately predict elastic wave velocity from raw OCE data of in vivo healthy and abnormal human skin. A total of 16,424 raw phase slices from 1% to 5% agar-based tissue-mimicking phantoms, 28,270 slices from in vivo human skin sites including the palm, forearm, back of the hand from 16 participants, and 580 slices of facial closed comedones were acquired to train, validate, and test VP-Net.ResultsVP-Net demonstrated highly accurate velocity prediction performance compared to other deep-learning-based methods, as evidenced by small evaluation metrics. Furthermore, VP-Net exhibited low model complexity and parameter requirements, enabling end-to-end velocity prediction from a single raw phase slice in 1.32 ms, enhancing processing speed by a factor of ∼100 compared to a conventional wave velocity estimation method. Additionally, we employed gradient-weighted class activation maps to showcase VP-Net’s proficiency in discerning wave propagation patterns from raw phase slices. VP-Net predicted wave velocities that were consistent with the ground truth velocities in agar phantom, two age groups (20s and 30s) of multiple human skin sites and closed comedones datasets.DiscussionThis study indicates that VP-Net could rapidly and accurately predict elastic wave velocities related to biomechanical properties of in vivo healthy and abnormal skin, offering potential clinical applications in characterizing skin aging, as well as assessing and managing the treatment of acne vulgaris.

IntroductionEarly diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma can greatly improve treatment success rate and patient survival. Although Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) based Angiography (OCTA) is a promising in vivo technique in oral imaging, there is a need for objective assessment of oral microvasculature.MethodsThis study aimed to demonstrate a comprehensive methodology of quantitative assessing OCTA intraoral scanning results to provide measurable, reproducible data and to avoid subjective visual interpretations. Data were collected from 37 healthy subjects in total across four intraoral sites—buccal mucosa (n = 32), labial mucosa (n = 24), floor of the mouth (n = 13), and hard palate (n = 8)—using a non-invasive swept-source OCT system. Four quantitative metrics—vessel area density, vessel skeleton density, vessel diameter index, and a newly proposed weighted Tortuosity Index—were used to assess OCTA images in oral applications.ResultsThe quadruple quantitative assessment’s repeatability was evaluated to be reliable. Analysis of a benign ulcer case revealed differences in these metrics compared to healthy cases.Discussion/ConclusionIn conclusion, we demonstrated a comprehensive method to quantify microvasculature in the oral cavity, showing considerable promise for early diagnosis and clinical management of oral diseases.

With the continuous expansion of satellite constellation, this paper analyzed the characteristics of mega constellation, and summarized the capability requirements of routing algorithms for mega constellation from two aspects of networking transmission and service requirements, included reducing signaling overhead, load balancing, fault recovery, and guaranteeing QoS.In addition, it introduced the routing methods, algorithms, and their performances that were applicable to mega constellation.It looked forward to the future related technology directions for mega constellation, included software defined network, area division management, artificial intelligence, and computing power routing, with the aim of providing reference for the construction of 6G satellite Internet.

Abstract The mining of the protective coal seam usually produces different pressure relief effects on the different areas of protected coal seam, the reason is that the stress paths of protected seam coal body in different areas caused by mining effect are different. In order to explore the differential pressure relief damage effect of coal body under different pressure relief conditions, the stress evolution path of coal body in different areas of the protected coal seam is obtianed by using theoretical analysis and the macro–micro damage characteristics of coal body under different stress paths by using numerical simulation in this paper. The results show that: The damage characteristics of the sample models are basically the same in the in-situ stress recovery stage and the mining disturbance stage of the two stress paths. With ith the sequence of stress stages experienced by the sample model, the distribution of acoustic emission events concentrates in the high-intensity area and the porosity continues to decrease. The number of cracks increases slowly in the stage of in-situ stress recovery stage, most of which are tensile cracks, while the number of cracks increases sharply in the mining disturbance stage, most of which are shear cracks. The difference of the deformation and macro meso damage characteristics of the sample models under the two stress paths is mainly reflected in the post mining pressure relief stage. At the post mining pressure relief stage of path 1, the number of cracks in the sample has little growth, and most of them are small energy tensile cracks, and the porosity increases, which verifies its obvious pressure relief activation antireflection effect; At this stage of path 2, the crack growth of the sample is obvious, and most of them are high-energy shear cracks, and the porosity continues to decrease. Compared with path 1, the pressure relief expansion effect of the sample model is suppressed and the compression damage continues to develop in this stage of path 2.

Rhamnus utilis Decne. (Family Rhamnaceae Juss.) leaf is commonly prepared as a anti-inflammatory herbal medicine and used for tea production. To investigate the mechanism of Rhamnus utilis Decne. aqueous extract (RDAE) against acute alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in mice. The ALD mouse (Male ICR) model was induced via intragastric administration of 52 % alcohol. Mice in each group were treated by gavage once daily with the RDAE (1.12, 2.25, 4.500 g/kg). The expression of proteins involved in the MAPKs/NF-κB/COX-2-iNOS pathway was measured by western blotting. Non-targeted metabolomics was used to determine metabolic profiles and critical pathways, while targeted metabolomics validated key amino acid metabolites. After administration of RDAE, the body mass of mice was significantly increased. The liver index was significantly decreased. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)-based angiography (OCTA) is a high-resolution, high-speed, and non-invasive imaging method that can provide vascular mapping of subcutaneous tissue up to approximately 2 mm. In dermatology applications of OCTA, handheld probes are always designed with a piece of transparent but solid contact window placed at the end of the probe to directly contact the skin for achieving better focusing between the light source and the tissue, reducing noise caused by minor movements. The pressure between the contact window and the skin is usually uncontrollable, and high external pressure affects the quality of microvascular imaging by compressing the vessels and obstructing the underlying blood flow. Therefore, it is necessary to determine a pressure range to ensure that the vessels can be fully imaged in high-quality images. In this paper, two pressure sensors were added to the existing handheld OCT probe, and the imaging probe was fixed to a metal stand and adjusted vertically to change the pressure between the probe and the tested skin site, a gradient of roughly 4 kPa (with 1–2 kPa error) increase was applied in each experiment, and the impact of pressure to the vessel was calculated. The experiment involved a total of five subjects, three areas of which were scanned (palm, back of the hand, and forearm). The vessel density was calculated to evaluate the impact of external pressure on angiography. In addition, PSNR was calculated to ensure that the quality of different tests was at a similar level. The angiography showed the highest density (about 10%) when the pressure between the contact window on the probe and the test area was between 3 and 5 kPa. As the pressure increased, the vascular density decreased, and the rate of decrease varied in different test areas. After fitting all the data points according to the different sites, the slope of the fitted line, i.e., the rate of decrease in density per unit value of pressure, was found to be 4.05% at the palm site, 6.93% at the back of the hand, and 4.55% at the forearm site. This experiment demonstrates that the pressure between the skin and contact window is a significant parameter that cannot be ignored. It is recommended that in future OCTA data collection processes and probe designs, the impact of pressure on the experiment be considered.

Electrophysiological monitoring is a commonly used medical procedure designed to capture the electrical signals generated by the body and promptly identify any abnormal health conditions. Wearable sensors are of great significance in signal acquisition for electrophysiological monitoring. Traditional electrophysiological monitoring devices are often bulky and have many complex accessories and thus, are only suitable for limited application scenarios. Hydrogels optimized based on nanomaterials are lightweight with excellent stretchable and electrical properties, solving the problem of high-quality signal acquisition for wearable sensors. Therefore, the development of hydrogels based on nanomaterials brings tremendous potential for wearable physiological signal monitoring sensors. This review first introduces the latest advancement of hydrogels made from different nanomaterials, such as nanocarbon materials, nanometal materials, and two-dimensional transition metal compounds, in physiological signal monitoring sensors. Second, the versatile properties of these stretchable composite hydrogel sensors are reviewed. Then, their applications in various electrophysiological signal monitoring, such as electrocardiogram monitoring, electromyographic signal analysis, and electroencephalogram monitoring, are discussed. Finally, the current application status and future development prospects of nanomaterial-optimized hydrogels in wearable physiological signal monitoring sensors are summarized. We hope this review will inspire future development of wearable electrophysiological signal monitoring sensors using nanomaterial-based hydrogels.

Abstract Multi-segmental lumbar degenerative disease, including intersegmental disc degeneration, is found in clinical practice. Controversy still exists regarding the treatment for cross-segment degeneration. Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion (OLIF) with several internal fixations was used to treat cross-segment lumbar degenerative disease. A whole lumbar spine model was extracted from CT images of the whole lumbar spine of patients with lumbar degeneration. The L2-3 and L4-5 intervertebral spaces were fused with OLIF using modeling software, the Pedicle screws were performed on L2-3 and L4-5, and different internal fixations were performed on L3-4 in Finite Element (FE) software. Among the six 10 Nm moments of different directions, the L3-4 no surgery (NS) group had the relatively largest Range of Motion (ROM) in the whole lumbar spine, while the L2-5 Long segmental fixation (LSF)group had the smallest ROM and the other groups had similar ROM. The ROM in the L1-2 and L5-S1 was relatively close in the six group models, and the articular cartilage stress and disc stress on the L1-2 and L5-S1 were relatively close. In contrast, the L3-4 ROM differed relatively greatly, with the LSF ROM the smallest and the NS ROM the largest, and the L3-4 Coflex (Coflex) group more active than the L3-4 Bacfuse (Bacfuse) group and the L3-4 translaminar facet screw fixation (TFSF) group. The stress on the articular cartilage and disc at L3-4 was relatively greater in the NS disc and articular cartilage, and greater in the Coflex group than in the Bacfuse and TFSF groups, with the greatest stress on the internal fixation in the TFSF group, followed by the Coflex group, and relatively similar stress in the Bacfuse, LSF, and NS groups. In the TFSF group, the stress on the internal fixation was greater than the yield strength among different directional moments of 10 Nm, which means it is unsuitable to be an internal fixation. The LSF group had the greatest overall ROM, which may lead to postoperative low back discomfort. The NS group has the greatest overall ROM, but its increased stress on the L3-4 disc and articular cartilage may lead to accelerated degeneration of the L3-4 disc and articular cartilage. The Coflex and Bacfuse groups had a reduced L3-4 ROM but a greater stress on disc compared to the LSF group, which may lead to disc degeneration in the long term. However, their stress on the articular cartilage was relatively low. Coflex and Bacfuse can still be considered better surgical options.

Missing data is unavoidable in longitudinal clinical trials, and outcomes are not always normally distributed. In the presence of outliers or heavy-tailed distributions, the conventional multiple imputation with the mixed model with repeated measures analysis of the average treatment effect (ATE) based on the multivariate normal assumption may produce bias and power loss. Control-based imputation (CBI) is an approach for evaluating the treatment effect under the assumption that participants in both the test and control groups with missing outcome data have a similar outcome profile as those with an identical history in the control group. We develop a robust framework to handle non-normal outcomes under CBI without imposing any parametric modeling assumptions. Under the proposed framework, sequential weighted robust regressions are applied to protect the constructed imputation model against non-normality in the covariates and the response variables. Accompanied by the subsequent mean imputation and robust model analysis, the resulting ATE estimator has good theoretical properties in terms of consistency and asymptotic normality. Moreover, our proposed method guarantees the analysis model robustness of the ATE estimation in the sense that its asymptotic results remain intact even when the analysis model is misspecified. The superiority of the proposed robust method is demonstrated by comprehensive simulation studies and an AIDS clinical trial data application.

Abstract Background There are some cases of Klippel-Feil syndrome with spinal cord injury in clinical work. However, there is no literature report on Brown-Sequard syndrome after trauma. We report a case of Brown-Sequard syndrome following minor trauma in a patient with KFS type III. Her Brown-Sequard syndrome is caused by Klippel-Feil syndrome. Case presentation We found a 38-year-old female patient with KFS in our clinical work. She was unconscious on the spot following a minor traumatic episode. After treatment, her whole body was numb and limb activity was limited. Half an hour later, she felt numb and weak in the right limb and weak in the left limb. She had no previous hypertension, diabetes, or coronary heart disease. After one-month treatment of medication, hyperbaric oxygen, rehabilitation, and acupuncture in our hospital, her muscle strength partially recovered, but the treatment effect was still not satisfactory. Then, she underwent surgical treatment and postoperative comprehensive treatment, and rehabilitation training. She was able to take care of herself with assistance, and her condition improved from grade B to grade D according to the ASIA (ASIA Impairment Scale) classification. Conclusion KFS, also known as short neck deformity, is a kind of congenital deformity characterized by impaired formation and faulty segmentation of the cervical spine, often associated with abnormalities of other organs. The cervical deformity in patients with KFS can alter the overall mechanical activity of the spine, as well as the compensatory properties of the spine for decelerating and rotatory forces, thus increasing the chance of spinal cord injury (SCI) following trauma. Many mechanisms can make patients more susceptible to injury. Increased range of motion of the segment adjacent to the fused vertebral body may lead to slippage of the adjacent vertebral body and altered disc stress, as well as cervical instability. SCI can result in complete or incomplete impairment of motor, sensory and autonomic nervous functions below the level of lesion. This woman presented with symptoms of BSS, a rare neurological disorder with incomplete SCI. Judging from the woman’s symptoms, we concluded that previously she had KFS, which resulted in SCI without fracture and dislocation following minor trauma, with partial BSS. After the comprehensive treatment of surgery, hyperbaric oxygen, rehabilitation therapy, and neurotrophic drugs, two years later, we found her symptoms significantly improved, with ASIA Impairment Scale from grade B to grade D, and her ability to perform activities of daily living with aids.

Abstract Background Previous studies have shown that osteoarthritis (OA) and sarcopenia (SP) are closely related to each other, but the causal relationships between them have not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the causal associations between OA and SP via a bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Methods A bi-directional two-sample MR was adopted to research the causal relationship between SP and OA. The instrumental variables for SP and four types of OA: KOA, HOA, total knee replacement (TKR) and total hip replacement (THR) were derived from published large genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger and weighted median estimator (WME) methods were used to estimate bi-directional causal effects. Results Low grip strength (GS) did not have a causal effect on four types of OA (KOA: OR = 1.205, 95% CI 0.837–1.734, p = 0.316; HOA: OR = 1.090, 95% CI 0.924–1.609, p = 0.307; TKR: OR = 1.190, 95% CI 1.084–1.307, p = 0.058; THR: OR = 1.035, 95% CI 0.792–1.353, p = 0.798), while appendicular lean mass (ALM) had a causal effect on four types of OA (KOA: OR = 1.104, 95% CI 1.041–1.171, p = 0.001; HOA: OR = 1.151, 95% CI 1.071–1.237, p

The current methods to generate projections for structural and angiography imaging of Fourier-Domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) are significantly slow for prediagnosis improvement, prognosis, real-time surgery guidance, treatments, and lesion boundary definition. This study introduced a robust ultrafast projection pipeline (RUPP) and aimed to develop and evaluate the efficacy of RUPP. RUPP processes raw interference signals to generate structural projections without the need for Fourier Transform. Various angiography reconstruction algorithms were utilized for efficient projections. Traditional methods were compared to RUPP using PSNR, SSIM, and processing time as evaluation metrics. The study used 22 datasets (hand skin: 9; labial mucosa: 13) from 8 volunteers, acquired with a swept-source optical coherence tomography system. RUPP significantly outperformed traditional methods in processing time, requiring only 0.040 s for structural projections, which is 27 times faster than traditional summation projections. For angiography projections, the best RUPP variation took 0.15 s, making it 7518 times faster than the windowed eigen decomposition method. However, PSNR decreased by 41–45% and SSIM saw reductions of 25–74%. RUPP demonstrated remarkable speed improvements over traditional methods, indicating its potential for real-time structural and angiography projections in FD-OCT, thereby enhancing clinical prediagnosis, prognosis, surgery guidance, and treatment efficacy.

Abstract In this study, we designed and optimized the main process for CO2 cryogenic separation and purification as well as the auxiliary process of refrigeration with ammonia, both these processes are modeled using Aspen HYSYS V11. The energy‐saving potential and greenhouse gas emission reduction potential of the process flow were analyzed using the Aspen Energy Analyzer V11. The effects of the plant inlet pressure, cooling temperature, tower pressure, and number of stages on two key parameters (energy consumption per unit of product and CO2 recovery rate) were studied in detail. Simultaneously, the appropriate design parameters of the plant were obtained, and the reason for the variation law was analyzed. Finally, grey relational analysis was used to explore the correlation between the influence factors and key parameters, indicating that the number of stages has the largest impact on the CO2 recovery rate and the energy consumption per unit of product, whereas tower pressure and cooling temperature have the least impact on the CO2 recovery rate and energy consumption per unit of product, respectively.

The effect of drought stress on carbon metabolism in the leaves and roots of bermudagrass was investigated. Plants established in PVC tubes suffered from three water treatments for 10 days. C138 and Tifway (drought-tolerant) were found to have lower relative electrical conductivity and higher water use efficiency than C32 (drought-sensitive) under moderate drought by increasing carotenoid and soluble sugar content and rapidly decreasing leaf starch content. The sucrose synthase activity of leaves and roots, acid invertase and neutral invertase activity of C32 roots substantially decreased under severe drought, resulting in a slow sucrose decomposition rate and significantly lower fructose and glucose contents than C138 and Tifway. The activities of four carbon metabolism enzymes and sucrose content in the leaves were greater than those in the roots, while the fructose and glucose contents were on the contrary, indicating that bermudagrass transported fructose and glucose obtained from sucrose decomposition from leaves to roots under drought to reduce roots damage. The path analysis indicated that leaves neutral invertase activity, and roots soluble sugar content might be the key parameter of carbon metabolism in bermudagrass under drought.

In this Letter, we propose a model-independent method to determine the Hubble constant and curvature simultaneously by taking advantage of the possibilities of future spaceborne gravitational-wave detector DECIGO in combination with the radio quasars as standard rulers. Similarly to the redshift drift in the electromagnetic domain, accelerating expansion of the Universe causes a characteristic phase correction to the gravitational waveform detectable by DECIGO. Hence, one would be able to extract the Hubble parameter H ( z ). This could be used to recover a distance–redshift relation supported by the data not relying on any specific cosmological model. Assuming the FLRW metric and using intermediate-luminosity radio quasars as standard rulers, one achieves an interesting opportunity to directly assess the H _0 and Ω _k parameters. To test this method, we simulated a set of acceleration parameters achievable by future DECIGO. Based on the existing sample of 120 intermediate-luminosity radio quasars calibrated as standard rulers, we simulated much bigger samples of such standard rulers possible to obtain with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In the case of ( N = 100) of radio quasars, which is the size of the currently available sample, the precision of the cosmological parameters determined would be ${\sigma }_{{H}_{0}}=2.74$ km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 and ${\sigma }_{{{\rm{\Omega }}}_{k}}=0.175$ . In the optimistic scenario ( N = 1000) achievable by VLBI, the precision of H _0 would be improved to 1%, which is comparable to the result of ${\sigma }_{{H}_{0}}=0.54$ km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 from Planck 2018 TT, TE, EE+lowE+lensing data, and the precision of Ω _k would be 0.050. Our results demonstrate that such combined analysis, possible in the future, could be helpful in solving the current cosmological issues concerning the Hubble tension and cosmic curvature tension.

Increased stiffness of tissues has been recognised as a diagnostic feature of pathologies. Tissue stiffness characterisation usually involves the detection of tissue response from mechanical stimulation. Air-puff optical coherence elastography (OCE) can generate impulse surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on tissue surface without contact and evaluate the mechanical properties of tissue. This study endeavours to explore the optimal excitation angle for air-puff OCE, a parameter that lacks standardisation at present, by investigating the relationship between the frequency bandwidth and peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of SAWs for different excitation angles (relative to the normal surface) of air-puff on the sample, from 5° to 85°, with an interval of 5° applied on the phantom. Due to the unevenness of human hands, 20°, 45° and 70° angles were employed for human skin (10 healthy adults). The results show that a smaller excitation angle could produce higher wave frequency bandwidth; a 5° angle generated an SAW with 1747 Hz frequency bandwidth, while an 85° angle produced an SAW with 1205 Hz. Significant differences were not shown in peak-to-peak SNR comparison between 5° and 65° on the phantom, but between 65° and 85° at the excitation position, a reduction of 48.6% was observed. Furthermore, the group velocity of the SAWs was used to evaluate the bulk Young’s modulus of the human tissue. The outcomes could provide essential guidance for air-puff-based elastography studies in clinical applications and future tissue research.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive high-resolution imaging technology that can accurately acquire the internal characteristics of tissues within a few millimeters. Using OCT technology, the internal fingerprint structure, which is consistent with external fingerprints and sweat glands, can be collected, leading to high anti-spoofing capabilities. In this paper, an OCT fingerprint anti-spoofing method based on a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed, considering the spatial continuity of 3D biometrics in fingertips. Experiments were conducted on self-built and public datasets to test the feasibility of the proposed anti-spoofing method. The anti-spoofing strategy using a 3D CNN achieved the best results compared with classic networks.

Abstract Background Vector control is still a pivotal method for preventing malaria, and its potency is weakened by the increasing resistance of vectors to chemical insecticides. As the most abundant and vital malaria vector in Southeast Asia, the chemical insecticide resistance status in Anopheles sinensis remains elusive in Laos, which makes it imperative to evaluate the true nature of chemical insecticide resistance-associated genetic mutations in An. sinensis in Laos. Methods Adult An. sinensis were collected from three border regions in Laos. DNA was extracted from individual mosquitoes. PCR amplification and DNA sequencing of a fragment containing codon 1014 of the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene were completed to study the kdr allele frequency distribution, kdr intron polymorphism, population genetic diversity, and the evolutionary status of the kdr codon. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit II gene (COII) was amplified and sequenced to examine population variations, genetic differentiation, spatial population structure, population expansion, and gene flow patterns. Results Nine wild kdr haplotypes of the vgsc gene were detected in this study, and eight of them, namely 1014L1, 1014L2, 1014L4, 1014L7, 1014L9, 1014L10, 1014L11, and 1014L21, were discovered in the China–Laos border (northern Laos), while 1014L3 was only detected in the Thailand–Laos border (northwestern Laos) and Cambodia–Laos border (southern Laos). The newly identified haplotype, 1014L21, was uniquely distributed in the China–Laos border and was not identified in other countries. Based on sequence analysis of the mitochondrial COII genes, significant genetic differentiation and limited gene flow were detected between the China–Laos and Cambodia–Laos An. sinensis populations, which suggested that those two regions were genetically isolated. The distinct distribution of the kdr haplotype frequencies is probably the result of geographical isolation in mosquito populations. Conclusions Lack of kdr mutations in the vgsc gene was probably due to genetic isolation and the absence of intense selection pressure in the three border regions of Laos. This study reveals that pyrethroid-based chemical insecticides are still appropriate for battling An. sinensis in parts of Laos, and routine monitoring of chemical insecticide resistance should be continuously implemented and focused on more restricted areas as part of chemical insecticide resistance management. Abstract Background The fast-declining clinical efficacy of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHA-PPQ) in Cambodia is a warning of the underlying westward dissemination of piperaquine resistance in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). Mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum Kelch 13-propeller (PfK13) and the P. falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter (PfCRT), as well as plasmepsin 2/3 gene amplification, have been discovered as molecular markers for predicting DHA-PPQ treatment failure. Determining whether these genetic variations of P. falciparum are linked to DHA-PPQ resistance is critical, especially along the China–Myanmar (CM) border, where PPQ has been utilized for decades. Methods A total of 173 P. falciparum samples of dried blood spots (DBS) were collected along the CM border between 2007 and 2010, the Thailand–Cambodia (TC) border between 2009 and 2013, and the Thailand–Myanmar (TM) border between 2012 and 2014. PCR and sequencing were used to identified PfCRT mutations, while qPCR was used to determine the copy number of plasmepsin 2/3. The prevalence of DHA-PPQ resistance in three locations was investigated using data paired with K13 mutations. Results Three fragments of the pfcrt gene were amplified for all 173 samples, and seven SNPs were identified (M74I, N75E/D, K76T, H97L, I218F, A220S, I356L). No new PfCRT mutations conferring resistance to PPQ (T93S, H97Y, F145I, M343L, and G353V) were discovered, except for one mutant I218F identified in the TM border (2.27%, 1/44). Additionally, mutant H97L was found in the TC, TM, and CM borders at 3.57% (1/28), 6.82% (3/44), and 1% (1/101), respectively. A substantial K13 C580Y variant prevalence was found in the TC and TM border, accounting for 64.29% (18/28) and 43.18% (19/44), respectively, while only 1% (1/101) was found in the CM border. The K13 F446I variant was only identified and found to reach a high level (28.71%, 29/101) in the CM border. Furthermore, 10.71% (3/28) of TC isolates and 2.27% (1/44) of TM isolates carried more than one copy of plasmepsin 2/3 and K13 C580Y variant, while no plasmepsin 2/3 amplification was identified in the CM isolates. Conclusions Compared with the P. falciparum samples collected from the TC and TM borders, fewer parasites carried plasmepsin 2/3 amplification and novel PfCRT variants, while more parasites carried predominant K13 mutations at position F446I, in the CM border. Clear evidence of DHA-PPQ resistance associated with candidate markers was not found in this border region suggesting a further evaluation of these markers and continuous surveillance is warranted. Abstract Background Little is known about the biomechanical performance of different internal fixations in oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). Here, finite element (FE) analysis was used to describe the biomechanics of various internal fixations and compare and explore the stability of each fixation. Methods CT scans of a patient with lumbar degenerative disease were performed, and the l3-S1 model was constructed using relevant software. The other five FE models were constructed by simulating the model operation and adding different related implants, including (1) an intact model, (2) a stand-alone (SA) model with no instrument, (3) a unilateral pedicle screw model (UPS), (4) a unilateral pedicle screw contralateral translaminar facet screw model (UPS-CTFS), (5) a bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) model, and (6) a cortical bone trajectory screw model (CBT). Various motion loads were set by FE software to simulate lumbar vertebral activity. The software was also used to extract the range of motion (ROM) of the surgical segment, CAGE and fixation stress in the different models. Results The SA group had the greatest ROM and CAGE stress. The ROM of the BPS and UPS-CTFS was not significantly different among motion loadings. Compared with the other three models, the BPS model had lower internal fixation stress among loading conditions, and the CBT screw internal fixation had the highest stress among loads. Conclusions The BPS model provided the best biomechanical stability for OLIF. The SA model was relatively less stable. The UPS-CTFS group had reduced ROM in the fusion segments, but the stresses on the internal fixation and CAGE were relatively higher in the than in the BPS group; the CBT group had a lower flexion and extension ROM and higher rotation and lateral flexion ROM than the BPS group. The stability of the CBT group was poorer than that of the BPS and LPS-CTFS groups. The CAGE and internal fixation stress was greater in the CBT group.

Abstract Background To develop an effective malaria vector intervention method in forested international border regions within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), more in-depth studies should be conducted on local Anopheles species composition and bionomic features. There is a paucity of comprehensive surveys of biodiversity integrating morphological and molecular species identification conducted within the border of Laos and Cambodia. Methods A total of 2394 adult mosquitoes were trapped in the Cambodia–Laos border region. We first performed morphological identification of Anopheles mosquitoes and subsequently performed molecular identification using 412 recombinant DNA–internal transcribed spacer 2 (rDNA-ITS2) and 391 mitochondrial DNA–cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 (mtDNA-COII) sequences. The molecular and morphological identification results were compared, and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA-ITS2 and mtDNA-COII was conducted for the sequence divergence among species. Results Thirteen distinct species of Anopheles were molecularly identified in a 26,415 km2 border region in Siem Pang (Cambodia) and Pathoomphone (Laos). According to the comparisons of morphological and molecular identity, the interpretation of local species composition for dominant species in the Cambodia–Laos border (An. dirus, An. maculatus, An. philippinensis, An. kochi and An. sinensis) achieved the highest accuracy of morphological identification, from 98.37 to 100%. In contrast, the other species which were molecularly identified were less frequently identified correctly (0–58.3%) by morphological methods. The average rDNA-ITS2 and mtDNA-COII interspecific divergence was respectively 318 times and 15 times higher than their average intraspecific divergence. The barcoding gap ranged from 0.042 to 0.193 for rDNA-ITS2, and from 0.033 to 0.047 for mtDNA-COII. Conclusions The Cambodia–Laos border hosts a high diversity of Anopheles species. The morphological identification of Anopheles species provides higher accuracy for dominant species than for other species. Molecular methods combined with morphological analysis to determine species composition, population dynamics and bionomic characteristics can facilitate a better understanding of the factors driving malaria transmission and the effects of interventions, and can aid in achieving the goal of eliminating malaria. Abstract Background Few studies have been conducted to investigate the distribution of mosquito vectors and the population structure of secondary vectors in the border region of Cambodia-Laos. The aim of this work was to study the mosquito diversity and molecular phylogeny of secondary vectors, i.e., Anopheles nivipes in this area. Methods 1440 adult mosquitoes were trapped in the Cambodia-Laos border. mtDNA-COII were amplified and sequenced from 53 An. nivipes DNA samples. Together with COII sequences deposited in GenBank, a total of 86 COII sequences were used for examining population variations, genetic differentiation, spatial population structure, population expansion, and gene flow patterns. Results The adult mosquitoes were classified into 5 genera and 27 species in this border region. The predominant genera were Culex (60.07%, 865/1440) and Anopheles (31.25%, 450/1440), and the major Anopheles species were An. nivipes (73.56%, 331/450) and Anopheles maculatus (14.22%, 64/450). Abstract Abstract Sweat pore, one of the level 3 features of fingerprint, has attracted much attention in fingerprint recognition. Traditional sweat pores on surface fingerprint are unclear or blurred when fingers are stained or damaged. Subcutaneous sweat pores, as cross section of the sweat glands, are resistant to external interferences. With 3D fingertip information measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT), the subcutaneous sweat pore estimation from OCT volume data is investigated. First, an adaptive subcutaneous pore image reconstruction method is proposed. It utilizes the skin surface and viable epidermis junction as reference and realizes depth‐adaptive pore image reconstruction. Second, a dilated U‐Net combining the U‐Net with dilated convolution is proposed for subcutaneous sweat pore extraction, which can prevent information loss of sweat pores caused by downsampling. To the best knowledge, it is the first time that subcutaneous sweat pore extraction is investigated and proposed. Experiments on subcutaneous pore image reconstruction and sweat pore extraction are both conducted. The qualitative and quantitative results show that the proposed adaptive method performs better in subcutaneous pore image reconstruction compared with the fix‐depth method, and the dilated U‐Net outperforms other methods on subcutaneous sweat pore extraction.

With the structure of biprism, polarization beam splitting in a Glan-Taylor polarizer was explored based on the birefringence and Goos-Hanchen shift. Due to the birefringence of the light in calcite crystal, the extraordinary light worked as the position calibration. As for the ordinary light, the propagated direction tilted noticeably due to the refraction as well as Goos-Hanchen effect at the prism-air interface of in the air gap. The Snell's law and stationary-phase approach were utilized for the calculation of the beam splitting between the two orthogonal polarization elements. By choosing appropriate incident angle and initial polarization, remarkable beam splitting was realized. With this configuration, the resolution with a magnitude of 10−5° and 10−3° was achieved for the response of the incident angle and polarization detection respectively.

At present, the relationship between the diversity distribution patterns of different taxonomic levels of plants and climatic factors is still unclear. This paper explored the diversity pattern of vascular plant families, genera, and species in China at the municipal scale. It also studied the effects of accumulated temperature ≥ 10°C, annual precipitation, and hydrothermal base which reflect the effect of hydrothermal resources on the plant diversity pattern. The results showed that: There were extremely significant correlations among the diversities of plant families, genera, and species, and the interpretation degree of diversity between adjacent the taxonomic levels was more than 90%. The diversity pattern of plant families was mainly affected by dominant climatic state indicators such as the maximum value of accumulated temperature, annual precipitation, and hydrothermal base, and the gradient range of the hydrothermal base, which showed a clear latitudinal gradient law. The diversity pattern of plant species was found to be mainly dependent on the climatic heterogeneity indicators, being closely related to the heterogeneity indicators and sum indicators of the hydrothermal base. It was also affected by the range of precipitation gradient range. Plant genus and its diversity pattern are not only significantly affected by heterogeneity and sum indicators but also closely related to climate state indicators. In comparison with the humidity index in vegetation ecological studies, the related indicators of the hydrothermal base proposed in this paper excelled at revealing the relationship between climate and diversity patterns of plant families, genera, and species, and could effectively solve the species-area relationship issue in arid and low-temperature areas. The results of this paper have presented important theoretical and practical values for comprehensively understanding the correlation between climate and diversity of plant families, genera, and species, clarifying the impact of climate difference and climate change on plant diversity.

Abstract Background The Anopheles hyrcanus group, which includes 25 species, is widely distributed in the Oriental and Palaearctic regions. Given the difficulty in identifying cryptic or sibling species based on their morphological characteristics, molecular identification is regarded as an important complementary approach to traditional morphological taxonomy. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Hyrcanus group using DNA barcoding markers in order to determine the phylogenetic correlations of closely related taxa and to compare these markers in terms of identification efficiency and genetic divergence among species. Methods Based on data extracted from the GenBank database and data from the present study, we used 399 rDNA–ITS2 sequences of 19 species and 392 mtDNA–COII sequences of 14 species to reconstruct the molecular phylogeny of the Hyrcanus group across its worldwide range. We also compared the performance of rDNA–ITS2 against that of mtDNA–COII to assess the genetic divergence of closely related species within the Hyrcanus group. Results Average interspecific divergence for the rDNA–ITS2 sequence (0.376) was 125-fold higher than the average intraspecies divergence (0.003), and average interspecific divergence for the mtDNA–COII sequence (0.055) was eightfold higher than the average intraspecies divergence (0.007). The barcoding gap ranged from 0.015 to 0.073 for rDNA–ITS2, and from 0.017 to 0.025 for mtDNA–COII. Two sets of closely related species, namely, Anophels lesteri and An. paraliae, and An. sinensis, An. belenrae and An. kleini, were resolved by rDNA–ITS2. In contrast, the relationship of An. sinensis/An. belenrae/An. kleini was poorly defined in the COII tree. The neutrality test and mismatch distribution revealed that An. peditaeniatus, An. hyrcanus, An. sinensis and An. lesteri were likely to undergo hitchhiking or population expansion in accordance with both markers. In addition, the population of an important vivax malaria vector, An. sinensis, has experienced an expansion after a bottleneck in northern and southern Laos. Conclusions The topology of the Hyrcanus group rDNA–ITS2 and mtDNA–COII trees conformed to the morphology-based taxonomy for species classification rather than for that for subgroup division. rDNA–ITS2 is considered to be a more reliable diagnostic tool than mtDNA–COII in terms of investigating the phylogenetic correlation between closely related mosquito species in the Hyrcanus group. Moreover, the population expansion of an important vivax malaria vector, An. sinensis, has underlined a potential risk of malaria transmission in northern and southern Laos. This study contributes to the molecular identification of the Anopheles hyrcanus group in vector surveillance. Graphical abstract

BackgroundCerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Effective treatments to alleviate AD are still not currently available. Hence, we explored markers and underlying molecular mechanisms associated with AD by utilizing gene expression profiles of AD and CSVD patients from public databases, providing more options for early diagnosis and its treatment.MethodsGene expression profiles were collected from GSE63060 (for AD) and GSE162790 (for CSVD). Differential analysis was performed between AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or CSVD progression and CSVD no-progression. In both datasets, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with the same expression direction were identified as common DEGs. Then protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed for common DEGs. Differential immune cells and checkpoints were calculated between AD and MCI.ResultsA total of 146 common DEGs were identified. Common DEGs were mainly enriched in endocytosis and oxytocin signaling pathways. Interestingly, endocytosis and metabolic pathways were shown both from MCI to AD and from CSVD no-progression to CSVD progression. Moreover, SIRT1 was identified as a key gene by ranking degree of connectivity in the PPI network. SIRT1 was associated with obesity-related genes and metabolic disorders. Additionally, SIRT1 showed correlations with CD8 T cells, NK CD56 bright cells, and checkpoints in AD.ConclusionThe study revealed that the progression of AD is associated with abnormalities in gene expression and metabolism and that the SIRT1 gene may serve as a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of AD.

Background: The pathological mechanism of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is unknown. KOA degeneration may be associated with changes in muscle strength, proprioception, biomechanics, and postural stability.Objective: This study aimed to assess asymmetries in muscle strength, proprioception, biomechanics, and postural stability of bilateral lower limbs in patients with unilateral KOA and healthy controls and analyze correlations between KOA and these parameters.Methods: A total of 50 patients with unilateral KOA (age range: 50-70) and 50 healthy subjects were recruited as study participants (age range: 50-70). Muscle strength, proprioception, femorotibial angle (FTA), femoral condylar–tibial plateau angle (FCTP), average trajectory error (ATE), and center of pressure (COP) sways areas were accessed in study participants, and the correlation between these variables was investigated.Results: In patients with unilateral KOA, lower limb muscle strength was significantly lower on the symptomatic side than on the asymptomatic side (p < 0.01), while the proprioception (degree error), FTA, FCTP, and ATE were substantially higher compared to the asymptomatic side (p < 0.01). However, no significant difference was observed in the healthy controls (p > 0.05). Patients with unilateral KOA had lower muscle strength than healthy controls (p < 0.05), but their proprioception (degree error: the difference between the target and reproduction angles), ATE, and COP sway areas were higher (p < 0.05). Muscle strength was found to be negatively correlated with ATE and COP sways areas (p < 0.05), whereas proprioception (degree error) was positively correlated with ATE and COP sways areas (p < 0.05) in all study participants. However, no correlation was found between FTA, FCTP, and ATE, COP sways areas in patients with unilateral KOA (p > 0.05).Conclusion: In patients with unilateral KOA, muscle strength, proprioception, biomechanics, and postural stability of bilateral limbs are asymmetrical in unilateral KOA patients. Muscle strength, proprioception, and postural stability are significantly associated variables, and changes in these variables should be considered in KOA prevention and rehabilitation.

Potassium-ion batteries with carbon-based materials and alloy materials as anodes possess pronounced potassium storage and cycling abilities, yet they suffer from harsh synthetic processes, low initial Coulombic efficiency, and limited structure stability. Herein, we first put forward potassium vanadium fluorophosphate (KVPO4F) as a highly stable anode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). KVPO4F@C composite is successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method followed by a low-temperature roasting process. An amorphous carbon film is homogeneously wrapped on the surface of the KVPO4F particles to improve electronic conductivity. As the anode for PIBs, the KVPO4F@C presents a super-high discharge capacity of 242.32 mAh g−1 and a superior cycle stability over 120 cycles at 100 mA·g−1 with 93.1% capacity retention. Additionally, it maintains 92.9% of its initial capacity of 100 mA·g−1 at 1000 mA·g−1 after cycling 2100 times, which indicates an excellent long cycling performance. The in situ X-ray Diffraction and ex situ Transmission Electron Microscopy tests prove the minimal volume variation and stable structure of KVPO4F@C. The designed KVPO4F@C provides facilitative electronic conductivity and stable structure, successfully innovating an ultra-stable and high-performance anode material for potassium-ion batteries and other energy storage application fields.

Abstract For determine the optimum position of the roof low roadway, the optimal solution is derived according to the response surface methodology. The UDEC numerical simulation of the overburden gives the porosity distribution of the strike fractured zone, the upper limit heights of the caving zone and the fractured zone are obtained as 18 m and 65 m, respectively. Based on the porosity distribution, the FLUENT numerical models of the goaf zone, air inlet roadway, air return roadway, working face and roof low roadway were established to simulate the gas concentration in the upper corner and gas drainage volume in roof low roadway during mining. Using the vertical and horizontal distance of the roof low roadway as the influencing factors, the experimental scheme of the position of the roof low roadway was designed according to the response surface method, and the response values were obtained from the FLUENT simulation experiments, predicting that the vertical and horizontal distances of the roof low roadway were 7.7 m and 5.9 m respectively when the interaction between the gas concentration in the upper corner and gas drainage volume in roof low roadway was optimal. Field tests showed that the average gas concentration in the upper corner and the average gas drainage volume in roof low roadway were 0.432% and 40.861 m3/min respectively, both of which were less than 10% of the error from the simulations. The design of the roof low roadway has effectively managed the gas accumulation problem in the upper corner.

The quinolone antibiotics represented by enrofloxacin (ENRO) are harmful to the ecological environment and human health due to illegal excessive use, resulting in increasing food residues and ENRO levels in the environment. To this end, we developed a MIPs–SERS method using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to detect ENRO in food matrices. Firstly, a layer of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with the best SERS effect was synthesized on the surface of copper rods as the enhancing material by in situ reductions, and then MIPs targeting ENRO were prepared by the native polymerization reaction, and the MIPs containing template molecules wrapped on the surface of silver nanoparticle films (Ag NPs–MIPs) were obtained. Our results showed that the Ag NPs–MIPs could specifically identify ENRO from the complex environment. The minimum detection limit for ENRO was 0.25 ng/mL, and the characteristic peak intensity of ENRO was linearly correlated to the concentration with a linear range of 0.001~0.1 μg/mL. The experimental results showed that in comparison to other detection methods, the rapid detection of ENRO in food matrices using Ag NPs–MIPs as the substrate is reliable and offers a cost-effective, time-saving, highly selective, and sensitive method for detecting ENRO residues in real food samples.

Abstract Background The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of JOACMEQ for CSM patients in mainland China. Methods A retrospective review was performed on 91 patients with CSM in our hospital from March 2015 to June 2015. Patients completed the JOACMEQ, the mJOA and the SF-36 questionnaires during the process. Cronbach's α was used to evaluate the internal consistency reliability, and test–retest reliability was checked. An exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the correlations among the JOACMEQ questions and the construct validity. The concurrent validity was assessed by Spearman correlation coefficient. The internal responsiveness was determined by effect sizes and standardized response means. External responsiveness was determined by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve on the basis of the Youden Index. Results The mean age of patients was 57.61 years old. The mean follow-up was 24 months. JOACMEQ showed a good internal consistency (Cronbach's α, 0.897). Test–retest reliability showing good result (Pearson's correlation, 0.695–0.905). Objectives: The China–Laos border has been identified as an important origin of imported malaria outside China. The aim of this study was to describe the asymptomatic malaria infections and epidemic trend of malaria in the China–Laos border region. Methods: A prevalence survey and surveillance of mosquito vectors was conducted in Muang Khua District of Phongsaly Province, China–Laos border, to determine the parasite carriage rate using nested PCR and microscopy. The species composition of malaria vectors was determined by overnight trapping. Blood samples were collected from 354 local residents aged 1–72 years in Sankang village in 2016. A total of 2430 adult mosquitoes were collected from four other villages in Muang Khua District from June to August 2016. Results: The parasite carriage rate was 7.63% (27/354) by microscopy or 7.91% (28/354) by nested PCR. The results of surveillance of the mosquito vectors revealed that the predominant genera of adult mosquitoes were Culex (69.92%, 1699/2430) and Anopheles (21.48%, 522/2430). Anopheles sinensis (82.95%, 433/522) was identified as the predominant species among the seven members of Anopheles found in this border region. Conclusions: A high prevalence of asymptomatic malaria was present and the most important malaria vector was Anopheles sinensis, suggesting that the malaria epidemic situation on the China–Laos border is serious.

The emergence of microneedle arrays (MNAs) as a novel, simple, and minimally invasive administration approach largely addresses the challenges of traditional drug delivery. In particular, the dissolvable MNAs act as a promising, multifarious, and well-controlled platform for micro-nanotransport in medical research and cosmetic formulation applications. The effective delivery mostly depends on the behavior of the MNAs penetrated into the body, and accurate assessment is urgently needed. Advanced imaging technologies offer high sensitivity and resolution visualization of cross-scale, multidimensional, and multiparameter information, which can be used as an important aid for the evaluation and development of new MNAs. The combination of MNA technology and imaging can generate considerable new knowledge in a cost-effective manner with regards to the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of active substances for the treatment of various diseases. In addition, noninvasive imaging techniques allow rapid, receptive assessment of transdermal penetration and drug deposition in various tissues, which could greatly facilitate the translation of experimental MNAs into clinical application. Relying on the recent promising development of bioimaging, this review is aimed at summarizing the current status, challenges, and future perspective on in vivo assessment of MNA drug delivery by various imaging technologies.

This study evaluated how the generation of pyrazines was promoted by high-intensity ultrasound (HIU) in a Maillard reaction (MR) model system of glucose-glycine. Carbohydrate module labeling (CAMOLA) technique was adopted using D-glucose-13C6 to elucidate the carbon skeleton of both intermediate and final MR products (MRPs). In the D-glucose-13C6-glycine HIU-MR model system, the concentration of 11 types of pyrazines was significantly higher than their counterparts in the thermal MR. Results of CAMOLA analysis showed that a significantly lower proportion of [M]+ in pyrazines with long-length side chains was observed when compared with the pyrazines generated in thermal MR. This phenomenon may suggest the aldol-type condensation was promoted by the HIU, which is a conversion from pyrazines with short-length side chains to those with long-length side chains involving carbonyl compounds. Furthermore, the analysis of isotopomers distribution in 2,3-dimethyl-quinoxaline as the o-phenylenediamine-derivatized 2,3-butanedione indicated that the increased proportion of [M + 4]+ in 2,3-dimethyl-quinoxaline (15.74% ± 0.11%) was attributed to a cleavage of D-glucose-13C6 promoted by the HIU. The above-mentioned findings elucidate that the aldol-type condensation and cleavage of D-glucose contribute to the promoted synthesis of pyrazines. The HIU would generate an extremely high temperature and pressure environment that is favored by the aldol-type condensation as a high-pressure favored reaction. The HIU, therefore, can be further developed as a promising technique to promote flavor generation through the MR.

The possible time variation of the fundamental constants of nature has been an active subject of research in modern physics. In this paper, we propose a new method to investigate such possible time variation of the speed of light c using the updated Hubble diagram of high-redshift standard candles including Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and high-redshift quasars (based on UV–X relation). Our findings show that the SNe Ia Pantheon sample, combined with currently available sample of cosmic chronometers, would produce robust constraints on the speed of light at the level of c / c _0 = 1.03 ± 0.03. For the Hubble diagram of UV+X-ray quasars acting as a new type of standard candle, we obtain c / c _0 = 1.19 ± 0.07. Therefore, our results confirm that there is no strong evidence for deviation from a constant speed of light up to z ∼ 2. Moreover, we discuss how our technique might be improved at much higher redshifts ( z ∼ 5), focusing on future measurements of the acceleration parameter X ( z ) with gravitational waves (GWs) produced by binary neutron star mergers. In particular, in the framework of the second-generation space-based GW detector, DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, the speed of light is expected to be constrained with a precision of Δ c / c = 10 ^−3 .

ObjectivesTo investigate the impact of ultrasound shear wave elastography (USWE) and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in predicting a change in biopsy-assigned Gleason Score (GS) after radical surgery for localised prostate cancer (PCa).MethodA total of 212 men opting for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) between September 2013 and June 2017 were recruited into this study. All the participants had 12-core transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) biopsies and imaging using USWE and mpMRI before radical surgery. The predictive accuracy for imaging modalities was assessed in relation to upgrading and downgrading of PCa GS between the biopsies and radical prostatectomy using Student’s t-test and multivariable logistic regression analyses. A decision analysis curve was constructed assessing the impact of nomogram on clinical situations using different thresholds of upgrading probabilities.ResultsMost GS 6 diseases on biopsies were upgraded on radical surgery (37/42, 88.1%). Major downgrading was seen in GS 8 category of disease (14/35; 37.1%), whereas no alteration was observed in GS 7 on biopsies in most men (55/75; 73.3%). In univariate analysis, higher preoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) (p = 0.001), higher prostate-specific antigen density (PSAD) (p = 0.002), stiffer USWE lesions (p = 0.009), and higher prostate imaging–reporting and data system (PIRADS) (p = 0.002) on mpMRI were significant predictors of upgrading. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, only PSA (p = 0.016) and USWE-measured tissue stiffness (p = 0.029) showed statistical significance in predicting upgrading.ConclusionsMeasurement of tissue stiffness using USWE in clinically localised PCa can predict upgrading of GS and has the potential to improve patient management options.

This study aimed to investigate the factors that influenced the clinicians to adjust the paliperidone dose in the acute phase of schizophrenia. This was a post hoc study of an 8-week, open-label, single-arm multicenter trial which evaluated the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of flexible doses of paliperidone ER (3–12 mg/day) in patients with acutely exacerbated schizophrenia. Patients were divided into groups according to the dose at week 8 (3, 6, and 9–12 mg). The responder was defined as the reduction percentage in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total score of ≥30%. According to the chi-squared automatic interaction detection algorithm, decision tree models predicting an increase in the dose of paliperidone ER were established. A decision tree, based on 4-week Marder positive factor, Clinical Global Impression (CGI), and BMI, was established to guide the dose adjustments of paliperidone ER in the acute phase of schizophrenia. The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that lower age at onset, higher baseline PANSS positive subscale score, and lower baseline Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP) score were significant predictors of increased dose in responders. Patients with young-onset age, severe baseline symptoms, and poor function are more likely to benefit from high dosage.

Hulun Lake is located in the Hulun Buir Grassland in Inner Mongolia and is an important component of the northern ecological barrier of China. Fluctuations in its area directly affect the stability of the surrounding ecological environments. In this study, Hulun Lake was taken as the study object, and meteorological data, water body area, water level, reservoir capacity, runoff volume, and social statistical data were used to study the dynamic changes in Hulun Lake and the critical driving forces. We constructed a balance analysis equation, determined the role of groundwater in the water cycle, and examined the minimum ecological water demand of Hulun Lake. The results of the analyses revealed that during the last 55 years, the variation trends of the water level, area, and reservoir capacity were generally consistent and could be divided into six stages. The increased temperature decreased precipitation, and increased evaporation resulted in decreased water flow from the major rivers supplying the lake, which was the main cause of the decrease in the water level and area of Hulun Lake. Groundwater was involved in the water cycle of Hulun Lake. After deducting the seepage and surface drainage, we found that the groundwater recharge volume was around 792 million m3 yearly. Based on the environmental, ecological, and production functions of Hulun Lake, the minimum ecological water demand is 11.272 billion m3.

Lakes are important water resources in Inner Mongolia and play essential roles in flood storage, water source maintenance, aquaculture, water volume regulation, and the regional ecological balance. However, most lakes in Inner Mongolia have undergone significant shrinkage over the past few decades. In order to quantify the lake changes in Inner Mongolia and analyze the factors associated with these changes, information about 546 lakes in seven years (1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018) was retrieved using 30 m resolution Landsat images taken of the entire region over 29 years (1989–2018). In addition, water census data from 2010 and 1:250,000 geological maps were used as references. The analysis revealed that the lakes in Inner Mongolia exhibited rapidly decreasing trends during the past three decades, with both the area and the number of lakes decreasing to a minimum by 2010. The number of lakes with areas of >1 km2 decreased from 384 in 1990 to 301 in 2018; the total area of lakes with individual areas of >1 km2 decreased from 4905.74 km2 in 1990 to 4187.45 km2 in 2018. With respect to the lake distribution among different geomorphological units, the analysis revealed that the lake shrinkage was most pronounced on the West Liaohe Plain, followed by the northern Inner Mongolian Plateau. Furthermore, in relation to different climatic zones, lake shrinkage primarily occurred in the mid-temperate semi-arid zone, wherein the lake area decreased by 776.6 km2. We hypothesize that the changes in the lake number and area in Inner Mongolia resulted from the combined effects of natural conditions and anthropogenic disturbances; possibly, lake shrinkage was mainly driven by the rising temperature and decreasing precipitation, along with water regulation projects, agricultural irrigation, mining development, and population growth that also had non-negligible effects on the lakes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a common autoimmune disease, is extremely damaging to human health. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) have a vital role in the occurrence and development of RA. Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3), which is a crucial component of the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methyltransferase complex, is involved in the progression of many diseases. In this study, we explored the role of METTL3 in the inflammatory response and proliferation, invasion, and migration of FLSs. We used human RA synovial tissues and the adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) animal model of RA. Experimental results revealed that METTL3 expression was significantly upregulated in human RA synovial tissues and in the rat AIA model. METTL3 knockdown suppressed interleukin (IL)-6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, and MMP-9 levels in human RA-FLSs and rat AIA-FLSs. In contrast, they were increased by METTL3 overexpression. Additionally, we found that, in FLSs, METTL3 may activate the nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathway. The experimental results showed that METTL3 may promote FLS activation and inflammatory response via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) concept to clinical results in Chinese patients with acutely exacerbated schizophrenia. The original study was an 8-week, open-label, single-arm, multicenter study of flexible doses of paliperidone-extended release (pali-ER) in Chinese patients with acutely exacerbated schizophrenia. This is a post hoc analysis to determine the MCID value of PANSS, PSP and evaluate the responsiveness of each outcome measurements in the acute phase of schizophrenia. The responsiveness of the four measurements (PANSS, PANSS reduction rate, PSP, CGI-S) was analyzed. Four hundred ninety nine patients completed the 8-week follow-up and were finally used for this post hoc analysis. The MCID calculated by different approaches varied from 14.02 to 31.50 for PANSS, 15.14 to 42.79% for PANSS reduction rate, and 7.62 to 13.13% for PSP. In addition, the improvement of the CGI-S owned the highest responsiveness of the four outcome measurements. The threshold value of MCID for schizophrenia patients was determined by choice of the assessment method to an extent. In addition, the CGI-S score appeared to be the most valid and responsive measure of effectiveness for the acute phase of schizophrenia when take the treatment satisfaction of patients as anchor.

This paper proposes a low-cost personal identification system that uses the combined palm vein and palmprint biometric features. The system consists of near-infrared and visible light-emitting diode (LED) arrays, a low-cost visual sensor, a Xilinx chip, and other components. A real-time image quality assessment (IQA) method for the combined palm vein and palmprint biometric features is also proposed. Two types of the LED with central frequency spectra of 890 and 680 nm are used to capture the palm vein and palmprint, respectively. The adaptive feedback control of the diode brightness is in accordance with the image quality assessed by the combined 2D entropy and local 2D entropy. The palm vein and palmprint images are acquired nearly simultaneously, and each acquired image undergoes a few preprocessing steps for extraction of the vein and print patterns. We use an image-level wavelet-based fusion strategy to reduce image storage requirement for the embedded platform and implement a complex wavelet-based fusion strategy for the PC platform. A deep scattering convolutional network is applied for extracting the features of the fused images, and a multi-class support vector machine is used for training and recognition. Characteristics of some vision-based personal identification systems are discussed. The proposed real-time IQA method with fusion strategy and feature extraction algorithm in our prototype system has substantially less operational requirements than that of the previous fusion strategies. It also demands less memory and yields lower equal error rate than the classical feature extraction algorithms.

To design underside protective seam strip layout. Similarity model experiments, numerical simulations and theoretical calculations are used to quantitatively study the pressure relief protection effect of different strip widths, dip angles and coal pillar widths of a thin underside protective seam under deeply buried conditions. The optimal strip width range is obtained according to the change law of strain during the mining process of the underside protective seam in a similar model experiment. The change law of the expansion of the protected coal seam is obtained and the fitting surfaces among the dip angle and strip width of the coal seam with the protection distance and pressure relief angle along the strike and dip of the protected coal seam are established according to the numerical simulation results of underside protective seam mining. It is concluded that the best pressure relief effect can be achieved when the dip angle is 16.7° and the strip width is 70 m. According to the stability threshold of coal pillars considered in strip mining theory, the coal pillar width is calculated to be 50 m. Similarity model experiments and numerical simulations of protected coal seam mining verify the pressure relief effect of the designed protective seam strip width and pillar width. A calculation method of the protective seam strip width, position and pillar width required by the specific width of the protected seam is proposed.

To research the dynamic response characteristics of cylindrical coal-rock samples under impact loads, the impact of rigid bars on cylindrical coal-rock samples is simulated under different speed conditions, based on LS-DYNA software, and the dynamic distribution characteristics of the stress, strain, and energy of cylindrical coal-rock samples are analyzed. The results demonstrated the following: (1) the cylindrical coal-rock sample failed at the center first, and the damage developed downward along the axial direction. (2) The critical effective stress and strain have an exponential function relationship with the velocity, and the critical time has a linear relationship with the velocity. (3) The energy change law of the cylindrical coal-rock sample is consistent with the destruction morphology. (4) The axial stress peaks in the severe damage part have a linear relationship with the speed, the axial stress attenuates rapidly after passing the stress yield point, and the axial strain does not increase continuously. (5) The peaks stress and strain on the central axis and the radial line obey the power function distribution, the axial stress produces tensile stress in the axial propagation direction, and the axial stress and strain peaks at the same position are larger than those of the radial stress and strain peaks. This research provides a reference for studying coal and rock dynamic disasters.

In this paper, an adaptive dynamic surface integral sliding mode fault-tolerant controller is designed for the multimachine power system with static var compensator (SVC) to overcome the problem of actuator failure. The main features of the proposed method are as follows: (1) By combining the dynamic surface control (DSC) method with integral sliding mode (ISM), the tracking errors of the system converge to the neighborhood of zero within a finite time, and the convergence speed, tracking accuracy, and anti-interference ability of the system are also significantly improved. (2) By introducing the failure factors, an adaptive fault-tolerant controller is designed to ensure the stability of the entire system after partial failure of the actuator. (3) By estimating the norm of the ideal weight vector of the radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs), the computational burden of the controller is reduced. Finally, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
