- Abstract
The understanding of God in traditional Alevism, bears traces of incarnation and reincarnation beliefs which is referred as deification of Ali in literary works. The idea of God manifesting in humans through His/Her attributes is acceptable in Sufism. According to researchers, Alevis are confused because they are not familiar with Sufi concepts, therefore they see Ali as God, the light of God, and as omniscient. Are these adjectives attributed to Ali really a confusion or are they a variant of a tripartite template in history in Alevi Islam? This template is similar to the tripartite template used to name Hermes. In the Hermetic interpretation of Gnostic culture, Hermes simultaneously carries the characteristics of wisdom, prophecy and divinity. These features must have been attributed to Ali through the interaction of Islam with surrounding cultures. Considering the prevalence of Hermetic culture in Kufa as the center of extreme Shiite sects, this influence is inevitable. It is thought that this identification between Hermes and Ali was established through the science of alchemy. Likewise, the fact that Hermes is known among Muslims as an omniscient of magic and that Ali as an authority in the Muslim alchemy tradition strengthens this possibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
