Abstract T-BOX factors belong to an evolutionarily conserved family of transcription factors. T-BOX factors not only play key roles in growth and development but are also involved in immunity, cancer initiation, and progression. Moreover, the same T-BOX molecule exhibits different or even opposite effects in various developmental processes and tumor microenvironments. Understanding the multiple roles of context-dependent T-BOX factors in malignancies is vital for uncovering the potential of T-BOX-targeted cancer therapy. We summarize the physiological roles of T-BOX factors in different developmental processes and their pathological roles observed when their expression is dysregulated. We also discuss their regulatory roles in tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and the newly arising questions that remain unresolved. This review will help in systematically and comprehensively understanding the vital role of the T-BOX transcription factor family in tumor physiology, pathology, and immunity. The intention is to provide valuable information to support the development of T-BOX-targeted therapy.

Abstract Background Current research on the neurological impact of SARS-CoV-2 primarily focuses on the elderly or severely ill individuals. This study aims to explore the diverse neurological consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a particular focus on mildly affected children and adolescents. Methods A cohort study was conducted to collect pre- and post-infection resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data from 185 participants and 181 structured questionnaires of long-term symptoms across four distinct age groups. The goal was to comprehensively evaluate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on these different age demographics. The study analyzed EEG changes of SARS-CoV-2 by potential biomarkers across age groups using both spatial and temporal approaches. Results Spatial analysis indicated that children and adolescents exhibit smaller changes in brain network and microstate patterns post-infection, implying a milder cognitive impact. Sequential linear analyses showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with a marked rise in low-complexity, synchronized neural activity within low-frequency EEG bands. This is evidenced by a significant increase in Hjorth activity within the theta band and Hjorth mobility in the delta band. Sequential nonlinear analysis indicated a significant reduction in the Hurst exponent across all age groups, pointing to increased chaos and complexity within the cognitive system following infection. Furthermore, linear regression analysis based on questionnaires established a significant positive relationship between the magnitude of changes in these neural indicators and the persistence of long-term symptoms post-infection. Conclusions The findings underscore the enduring neurological impacts of SARS-CoV-2 infection, marked by cognitive decline and increased EEG disarray. Although children and adolescents experienced milder effects, cognitive decline and heightened low-frequency electrical activity were evident. These observations might contribute to understanding potential anxiety, insomnia, and neurodevelopmental implications.

Objectives: Celastrol has widespread therapeutic applications in various pathological conditions, including chronic inflammation. Previous studies have demonstrated the potent cardioprotective effects of celastrol. Nevertheless, limited attention has been given to its potential in reducing ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) following myocardial infarction (MI). Hence, this study aimed to elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying the regulatory effects of celastrol on VAs and cardiac electrophysiological parameters in rats after MI. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided at random: the sham, MI, and MI + celastrol groups. The left coronary artery was occluded in the MI and MI + Cel groups. Electrocardiogram, heart rate variability (HRV), ventricular electrophysiological parameters analysis, histology staining of ventricles, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blotting and Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were performed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of celastrol. Besides, H9c2 cells were subjected to hypoxic conditions to create an in vitro model of MI and then treated with celastrol for 24 hours. Nigericin was used to activate the NLRP3 inflammasome. Results: Compared with that MI group, cardiac electrophysiology instability was significantly alleviated in the MI + celastrol group. Additionally, celastrol improved HRV, upregulated the levels of Cx43, Kv.4.2, Kv4.3 and Cav1.2, mitigated myocardial fibrosis, and inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. In vitro conditions also supported the regulatory effects of celastrol on the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Conclusions: Celastrol could alleviate the adverse effects of VAs after MI partially by promoting autonomic nerve remodeling, ventricular electrical reconstruction and ion channel remodeling, and alleviating ventricular fibrosis and inflammatory responses partly by through inhibiting the NLRP3/Caspase-1/IL-1β pathway.

Objective Research on reefs is highly important for determining sedimentary environments and for oil and gas exploration, but relatively few studies have been conducted on Carboniferous reefs in the Southwest Tarim Basin. Methods Early Carboniferous reefs of the Heshirafu Formation in the Artashi section in the Southwest Tarim Basin formed in the Middle-Late Visean section of the Early Carboniferous. Reef-building organisms and accessory organisms were not quite diversified; the former mainly consisted of colonial corals of different kinds and solitary corals of a small number, and the latter were mostly echinoderms. Results Their growth was suspended due to less supply of terrigenous materials largely related to the frequent sea level changes in the Early Carboniferous in the piedmont structures of the Southwest Tarim Basin. These reefs are among the products of the recovery of metazoan skeleton reefs across the globe after the Late Devonian mass extinction; their occurrence was accompanied by mid- to late-stage Visean climate warming and global sea level rise. These reefs are common in the Early Carboniferous Visean reefs worldwide. In addition, according to the overall sedimentary facies of the Heshirafu Formation in the Artashi section and the adjacent Hantiereke Formation in the Kushanhe section, it is speculated that a transgression occurred from southwest to northeast in the Visean period of the Early Carboniferous in the Southwest Tarim Basin when the global sea level was rising and a passive continental margin was simultaneously forming and beginning to sink. As a result, a narrow platform margin facies belt gradually took shape in the piedmont structure of the Southwest Tarim Basin. This belt was conducive to the development of biological reefs. Then, when the Heshirafu Formation formed, a depositional system of "shore facies-lagoon facies-platform margin facies-slope facies-continental shelf facies" developed in a seaward direction. Conclusion The classification of sedimentary systems can provide a reference for Carboniferous sedimentary environments and oil and gas exploration in the Southwest Tarim Basin.

Abstract GCG ((−)‐gallocatechin gallate) and EGCG ((−)‐epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate) are main biologically active polyphenolic compounds in tea leaves, and EGCG has been studied for its potential effects on alleviating diabetic nephropathy (DN). Previous studies showed that GCG exhibited better hypoglycemic and antioxidant efficacy than EGCG. However, the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of GCG in the protection of DN are unknown. In this study, db/db mice were administered with EGCG or GCG orally for 20 weeks to comparatively investigate their effects on DN. These results revealed that GCG was significantly more effective than EGCG in decreasing water intake and urine excretion, reducing fasting blood glucose levels and systolic blood pressure, improving mesenteric artery contractility, enhancing the right renal hemodynamics, and improving key renal function markers. Through transcriptome analysis, S100A8/S100A9, two regulators of interstitial fibrosis, were identified and found to be more sensitive to GCG intervention, which was further confirmed by mRNA and protein expression data. In addition, the molecular docking analysis results demonstrated that GCG displayed a superior binding affinity toward S100A8/S100A9 in comparison to EGCG. Overall, our study found that GCG holds significant potential for the treatment of DN and outperforms EGCG in terms of efficacy.

Abstract A steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system relies on the photic driving response to effectively elicit characteristic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, traditional visual stimuli mainly adopt high-contrast black-and-white flickering stimulations, which are easy to cause visual fatigue. This paper presents an SSVEP dataset acquired at a wide frequency range from 1 to 60 Hz with an interval of 1 Hz using flickering stimuli under two different modulation depths. This dataset contains 64-channel EEG data from 30 healthy subjects when they fixated on a single flickering stimulus. The stimulus was rendered on an LCD display with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Initially, the dataset was rigorously validated through comprehensive data analysis to investigate SSVEP responses and user experiences. Subsequently, BCI performance was evaluated through offline simulations of frequency-coded and phase-coded BCI paradigms. This dataset provides comprehensive and high-quality data for studying and developing SSVEP-based BCI systems.

Abstract The sex-determining region Y (SRY)-related high-mobility group (HMG) box (SOX) family, composed of 20 transcription factors, is a conserved family with a highly homologous HMG domain. Due to their crucial role in determining cell fate, the dysregulation of SOX family members is closely associated with tumorigenesis, including tumor invasion, metastasis, proliferation, apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, stemness and drug resistance. Despite considerable research to investigate the mechanisms and functions of the SOX family, confusion remains regarding aspects such as the role of the SOX family in tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and contradictory impacts the SOX family exerts on tumors. This review summarizes the physiological function of the SOX family and their multiple roles in tumors, with a focus on the relationship between the SOX family and TIME, aiming to propose their potential role in cancer and promising methods for treatment.

Abstract Transcription factor BTB domain and CNC homology 1 (BACH1) belongs to the Cap ‘n’ Collar and basic region Leucine Zipper (CNC-bZIP) family. BACH1 is widely expressed in mammalian tissues, where it regulates epigenetic modifications, heme homeostasis, and oxidative stress. Additionally, it is involved in immune system development. More importantly, BACH1 is highly expressed in and plays a key role in numerous malignant tumors, affecting cellular metabolism, tumor invasion and metastasis, proliferation, different cell death pathways, drug resistance, and the tumor microenvironment. However, few articles systematically summarized the roles of BACH1 in cancer. This review aims to highlight the research status of BACH1 in malignant tumor behaviors, and summarize its role in immune regulation in cancer. Moreover, this review focuses on the potential of BACH1 as a novel therapeutic target and prognostic biomarker. Notably, the mechanisms underlying the roles of BACH1 in ferroptosis, oxidative stress and tumor microenvironment remain to be explored. BACH1 has a dual impact on cancer, which affects the accuracy and efficiency of targeted drug delivery. Finally, the promising directions of future BACH1 research are prospected. A systematical and clear understanding of BACH1 would undoubtedly take us one step closer to facilitating its translation from basic research into the clinic.

Abstract Worldwide, the incidence of major depressive disorder (MDD) is increasing annually, resulting in greater economic and social burdens. Moreover, the pathological mechanisms of MDD and the mechanisms underlying the effects of pharmacological treatments for MDD are complex and unclear, and additional diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for MDD still are needed. The currently widely accepted theories of MDD pathogenesis include the neurotransmitter and receptor hypothesis, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hypothesis, cytokine hypothesis, neuroplasticity hypothesis and systemic influence hypothesis, but these hypothesis cannot completely explain the pathological mechanism of MDD. Even it is still hard to adopt only one hypothesis to completely reveal the pathogenesis of MDD, thus in recent years, great progress has been made in elucidating the roles of multiple organ interactions in the pathogenesis MDD and identifying novel therapeutic approaches and multitarget modulatory strategies, further revealing the disease features of MDD. Furthermore, some newly discovered potential pharmacological targets and newly studied antidepressants have attracted widespread attention, some reagents have even been approved for clinical treatment and some novel therapeutic methods such as phototherapy and acupuncture have been discovered to have effective improvement for the depressive symptoms. In this work, we comprehensively summarize the latest research on the pathogenesis and diagnosis of MDD, preventive approaches and therapeutic medicines, as well as the related clinical trials.

In steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, traditional flickering stimulation patterns face challenges in achieving a trade-off in both BCI performance and visual comfort across various frequency bands. To investigate the optimal stimulation paradigms with high performance and high comfort for each frequency band, this study systematically compared the characteristics of SSVEP and user experience of different stimulation paradigms with a wide stimulation frequency range of 1–60 Hz. The findings suggest that, for a better balance between system performance and user experience, ON and OFF grid stimuli with a Weber contrast of 50% can be utilized as alternatives to traditional flickering stimulation paradigms in the frequency band of 1–25 Hz. In the 25–35 Hz range, uniform flicker stimuli with the same 50% contrast are more suitable. In the higher frequency band, traditional uniform flicker stimuli with a high 300% contrast are preferred. These results are significant for developing high performance and user-friendly SSVEP-based BCI systems.

Abstract Background Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant tumor of the central nervous system. It is an aggressive tumor characterized by rapid proliferation, diffuse tumor morphology, and poor prognosis. Unfortunately, current treatments, such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are unable to achieve good outcomes. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore new treatment targets. A detailed mechanistic exploration of the role of the nuclear pore transporter KPNB1 in GBM is lacking. This study demonstrated that KPNB1 regulated GBM progression through a transcription factor YBX1 to promote the expression of post-protrusion membrane protein NLGN3. This regulation was mediated by the deubiquitinating enzyme USP7. Methods A tissue microarray was used to measure the expression of KPNB1 and USP7 in glioma tissues. The effects of KPNB1 knockdown on the tumorigenic properties of glioma cells were characterized by colony formation assays, Transwell migration assay, EdU proliferation assays, CCK-8 viability assays, and apoptosis analysis using flow cytometry. Transcriptome sequencing identified NLGN3 as a downstream molecule that is regulated by KPNB1. Mass spectrometry and immunoprecipitation were performed to analyze the potential interaction between KPNB1 and YBX1. Moreover, the nuclear translocation of YBX1 was determined with nuclear-cytoplasmic fractionation and immunofluorescence staining, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were conducted to study DNA binding with YBX1. Ubiquitination assays were performed to determine the effects of USP7 on KPNB1 stability. The intracranial orthotopic tumor model was used to detect the efficacy in vivo. Results In this study, we found that the nuclear receptor KPNB1 was highly expressed in GBM and could mediate the nuclear translocation of macromolecules to promote GBM progression. Knockdown of KPNB1 inhibited the progression of GBM, both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we found that KPNB1 could regulate the downstream expression of Neuroligin-3 (NLGN3) by mediating the nuclear import of transcription factor YBX1, which could bind to the NLGN3 promoter. NLGN3 was necessary and sufficient to promote glioma cell growth. Furthermore, we found that deubiquitinase USP7 played a critical role in stabilizing KPNB1 through deubiquitination. Knockdown of USP7 expression or inhibition of its activity could effectively impair GBM progression. In vivo experiments also demonstrated the promoting effects of USP7, KPNB1, and NLGN3 on GBM progression. Overall, our results suggested that KPNB1 stability was enhanced by USP7-mediated deubiquitination, and the overexpression of KPNB1 could promote GBM progression via the nuclear translocation of YBX1 and the subsequent increase in NLGN3 expression. Conclusion This study identified a novel and targetable USP7/KPNB1/YBX1/NLGN3 signaling axis in GBM cells.

Abstract Background The development of radioresistance seriously hinders the efficacy of radiotherapy in lung cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms by which radioresistance occurs are still incompletely understood. The N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) modification of RNA is involved in cancer progression, but its role in lung cancer radioresistance remains elusive. This study aimed to identify m6A regulators involved in lung cancer radiosensitivity and further explore the underlying mechanisms to identify therapeutic targets to overcome lung cancer radioresistance. Methods Bioinformatic mining was used to identify the m6A regulator IGF2BP2 involved in lung cancer radiosensitivity. Transcriptome sequencing was used to explore the downstream factors. Clonogenic survival assays, neutral comet assays, Rad51 foci formation assays, and Annexin V/propidium iodide assays were used to determine the significance of FBW7/IGF2BP2/SLC7A5 axis in lung cancer radioresistance. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-qPCR analyses, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP)-qPCR analyses, RNA pull-down analyses, co-immunoprecipitation analyses, and ubiquitination assays were used to determine the feedback loop between IGF2BP2 and SLC7A5 and the regulatory effect of FBW7/GSK3β on IGF2BP2. Mice models and tissue microarrays were used to verify the effects in vivo. Results We identified IGF2BP2, an m6A “reader”, that is overexpressed in lung cancer and facilitates radioresistance. We showed that inhibition of IGF2BP2 impairs radioresistance in lung cancer both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, we found that IGF2BP2 enhances the stability and translation of SLC7A5 mRNA through m6A modification, resulting in enhanced SLC7A5-mediated transport of methionine to produce S-adenosylmethionine. This feeds back upon the IGF2BP2 promoter region by further increasing the trimethyl modification at lysine 4 of histone H3 (H3K4me3) level to upregulate IGF2BP2 expression. We demonstrated that this positive feedback loop between IGF2BP2 and SLC7A5 promotes lung cancer radioresistance through the AKT/mTOR pathway. Moreover, we found that the ubiquitin ligase FBW7 functions with GSK3β kinase to recognize and degrade IGF2BP2. Conclusions Collectively, our study revealed that the m6A “reader” IGF2BP2 promotes lung cancer radioresistance by forming a positive feedback loop with SLC7A5, suggesting that IGF2BP2 may be a potential therapeutic target to control radioresistance in lung cancer.

Objective Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) realize the information transmission between the brain and the external world. Visual evoked potential (VEP) based BCIs have gained widespread attention in the field of multi-instruction interaction attributed to their high information transfer rate (ITR). However, improving the IT R and the practicability is challenging for existing VEP based BCIs due to factors such as the encoding efficiency and the calibration time. To address this issue, this study proposed a new encoding method employing narrow-band random sequences and provided a large dataset for VEP based brain-computer interfaces.Methods Narrow-band random sequences are random sequences with a specific frequency band. The dataset encompasses three paradigms that employ three kinds of encoding sequences: narrow-band sequences with a frequency band of 15 ∼ 25 Hz (NBRS-15), narrow-band random sequences with a frequency band of 8 ∼ 16 Hz (NBRS-8), and sequences utilizing joint frequency-phase modulation method with a frequency range of 8–15.8 Hz (JFP M-8).Results The dataset includes 59-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) data for 100 subjects, and the quality of the dataset is validated through quantitative analyses on EEG characteristics and classification performance.Conclusion The proposed large dataset includes various paradigms, and the data quality has been validated, which can contribute to the development of VEP based BCIs. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important cause of acute hepatitis, however, is highly neglected and largely underreported. This study aimed to describe the detailed epidemiology of hepatitis E (HE) through a 10-year surveillance. A community-based active hepatitis surveillance was conducted between November 2007 and October 2017 in 11 townships of Dongtai City in China, involving 355,673 residents. Serum samples were obtained from patients presenting with hepatitis symptoms for more than 3 days. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels greater than 2.5 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) were considered acute hepatitis. Samples were subsequently tested for IgG and IgM anti-HEV antibodies, HEV RNA, and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The data indicated the incidence of HE fluctuated downward from 2007 to 2017, with an average annual age-standardized incidence of 17.50 per 100,000, exceeding the 10.26 per 100,000 in the National Notifiable Disease Report System (NNDRS). The incidence was notably higher among males (20.95 per 100,000) and individuals aged 50–69 years (37.47 per 100,000). Genotype 4 (HEV-4) was the predominantly circulating genotype during the study period. Furthermore, the study revealed the incidence of hepatitis with HEV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection was 4.99 per 100,000. The active surveillance system identified a higher incidence of HE compared to NNDRS, with a decreased prevalence over a 10-year period. While efforts are still needed to prevent HE in high-risk populations, including individuals with hepatitis B and the elderly.

Reducing plant height (PH) is one of the core contents of the “Green Revolution”, which began in the 1960s in wheat. A number of 27 reduced-height (Rht) genes have been identified and a great number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for PH have been mapped on all 21 chromosomes. Nonetheless, only several genes regulated PH have been cloned. In this study, we found the interval of QTL QPh-1B included an EST-SSR marker swes1079. According to the sequence of swes1079, we cloned the TaOSCA1.4 gene. We developed a CAPS marker to analyze the variation across a natural population. The result showed that the PH was significantly different between the two haplotypes of TaOSCA1.4–1B under most of the 12 environments and the average values of irrigation and rainfed conditions. This result further demonstrated that TaOSCA1.4 was associated with PH. Then, we validated the TaOSCA1.4 via RNAi technology. The average PHs of the wild-type (WT), RNAi lines 1 (Ri-1) and 2 (Ri-2) were 94.6, 83.6 and 79.2 cm, respectively, with significant differences between the WT and Ri-1 and Ri-2. This result indicated that the TaOSCA1.4 gene controls PH. TaOSCA1.4 is a constitutively expressed gene and its protein localizes to the cell membrane. TaOSCA1.4 gene is a member of the OSCA gene family, which regulates intracellular Ca2+ concentration. We hypothesized that knock down mutants of TaOSCA1.4 gene reduced regulatory ability of Ca2+, thus reducing the PH. Furthermore, the cell lengths of the knock down mutants are not significantly different than that of WT. We speculate that TaOSCA1.4 gene is not directly associated with gibberellin (GA), which should be a novel mechanism for a wheat Rht gene.

Summary: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a way to interact with computers without relying on physical movements. Non-invasive electroencephalography-based visual BCIs, known for efficient speed and calibration ease, face limitations in continuous tasks due to discrete stimulus design and decoding methods. To achieve continuous control, we implemented a novel spatial encoding stimulus paradigm and devised a corresponding projection method to enable continuous modulation of decoded velocity. Subsequently, we conducted experiments involving 17 participants and achieved Fitt’s information transfer rate (ITR) of 0.55 bps for the fixed tracking task and 0.37 bps for the random tracking task. The proposed BCI with a high Fitt’s ITR was then integrated into two applications, including painting and gaming. In conclusion, this study proposed a visual BCI based-control method to go beyond discrete commands, allowing natural continuous control based on neural activity.

An essential priority of visual brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is to enhance the information transfer rate (ITR) to achieve high-speed communication. Despite notable progress, noninvasive visual BCIs have encountered a plateau in ITRs, leaving it uncertain whether higher ITRs are achievable. In this study, we used information theory to study the characteristics and capacity of the visual-evoked channel, which leads us to investigate whether and how we can decode higher information rates in a visual BCI system. Using information theory, we estimate the upper and lower bounds of the information rate with the white noise (WN) stimulus. Consequently, we found out that the information rate is determined by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the frequency domain, which reflects the spectrum resources of the channel. Based on this discovery, we propose a broadband WN BCI by implementing stimuli on a broader frequency band than the steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs)-based BCI. Through validation, the broadband BCI outperforms the SSVEP BCI by an impressive 7 bps, setting a record of 50 bps. The integration of information theory and the decoding analysis presented in this study offers valuable insights applicable to general sensory-evoked BCIs, providing a potential direction of next-generation human-machine interaction systems.

Abstract Water phase trapping (WPT) is one of the primary formation damage issues which can cause a steep drop in tight gas production. This paper presented a rapid assessment of the damage potential of WPT in Daniudi, Nanpu 5th, and Keshen 9th tight gas reservoirs involving shallow to ultra-deep layers in China. Typical core samples of the three tight gas reservoirs were selected to perform water imbibition and drainage experiments to mimic the WPT occurrence. After that, the damage degree to core gas permeability induced by WPT was evaluated. Results showed that, for a 16-h vertical water imbibition experiment, the core samples of Daniudi gas reservoir experienced the fastest water imbibition process while the core samples of Keshen 9th gas reservoir established the highest water saturation. After water removal, the ranges of damage degree to core gas permeability induced by the incremental water saturation were 36.07%–78.13%, 36.06%–56.21%, and 61.00%–76.30% in Daniudi, Nanpu 5th, and Keshen 9th tight gas reservoirs, respectively. It found that with the increasing formation depth, tight gas reservoirs can suffer greater damage from WPT not only because of the decline in rock permeability but also the salting out of high salinity formation water. In general, it holds that strong water capillary imbibition phenomenon, low water removal capacity, and high gas permeability damage degree are found to be the striking features of WPT potential on these typical tight gas reservoirs in China.

Abstract Cannulated screw fixation is essential in treating femoral neck fractures, and the widely used freehand technique has several limitations. Therefore, we designed a new laser-positioning and navigation system and compared its efficacy with that of the traditional freehand technique in the cannulated screw fixation of femoral neck fractures. Abstract Background Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a major challenge to health economic cost and residents’ health status. Community health workers (CHWs) are the gatekeeper of primary health care. Objective This study aimed to conduct a situational analysis of current human resource and requirements of NCDs-related training among CHWs in Chengdu with regard to address to understand the suggestions for improvement of challenges and barriers. This paper studies the optimal asset allocation problem of a defined contribution (DC) pension plan with a stochastic salary and value under a constraint within a stochastic volatility model. It is assumed that the financial market contains a risk-free asset and a risky asset whose price process satisfies the Stein–Stein stochastic volatility model. To comply with regulatory standards and offer a risk management tool, we integrate the dynamic versions of Value-at-Risk (VaR), Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR), and worst-case CVaR (wcCVaR) constraints into the DC pension fund management model. The salary is assumed to be stochastic and characterized by geometric Brownian motion. In the dynamic setting, a CVaR/wcCVaR constraint is equivalent to a VaR constraint under a higher confidence level. By using the Lagrange multiplier method and the dynamic programming method to maximize the constant absolute risk aversion (CARA) utility of terminal wealth, we obtain closed-form expressions of optimal investment strategies with and without a VaR constraint. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the impact of a dynamic VaR/CVaR/wcCVaR constraint and other parameters on the optimal strategy.

With the increasing complexity of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) missions, single-objective optimization for UAV trajectory planning proves inadequate in handling multiple conflicting objectives. There is a notable absence of research on multi-objective optimization for UAV trajectory planning. This study introduces a novel two-stage co-evolutionary multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for UAV trajectory planning (TSCEA). Firstly, two primary optimization objectives were defined: minimizing total UAV flight distance and obstacle threats. Five constraints were defined: safe distances between UAV trajectory and obstacles, maximum flight altitude, speed, flight slope, and flight corner limitations. In order to effectively cope with UAV constraints on object space limitations, the evolution of the TSCEA algorithm is divided into an exploration phase and an exploitation phase. The exploration phase employs a two-population strategy where the main population ignores UAV constraints while an auxiliary population treats them as an additional objective. This approach enhances the algorithm’s ability to explore constrained solutions. In contrast, the exploitation phase aims to converge towards the Pareto frontier by leveraging effective population information, resulting in multiple sets of key UAV trajectory points. Three experimental scenarios were designed to validate the effectiveness of TSCEA. Results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only successfully navigates UAVs around obstacles but also generates multiple sets of Pareto-optimal solutions that are well-distributed across objectives. Therefore, compared to single-objective optimization, TSCEA integrates the UAV mathematical model comprehensively and delivers multiple high-quality, non-dominated trajectory planning solutions.

UAV mission planning is one of the core problems in the field of UAV applications. Currently, mission planning needs to simultaneously optimize multiple conflicting objectives and take into account multiple mutually coupled constraints, and traditional optimization algorithms struggle to effectively address these difficulties. Constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have been proven to be effective methods for solving complex constrained multi-objective optimization problems and have been gradually applied to UAV mission planning. However, recent advances in this area have not been summarized. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of this topic, first introducing the basic classification of UAV mission planning and its applications in different fields, proposing a new classification method based on the priorities of objectives and constraints, and describing the constraints of UAV mission planning from the perspectives of mathematical models and planning algorithms. Then, the importance of constraint handling techniques in UAV mission planning and their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed in detail, and the methods for determining individual settings in multiple populations and improvement strategies in constraint evolution algorithms are discussed. Finally, the method from the related literature is presented to compare in detail the application weights of constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithms in UAV mission planning and provide directions and references for future research.

The optimal investment problem for defined contribution (DC) pension plans with partial information is the subject of this paper. The purpose of the return of premium clauses is to safeguard the rights of DC pension plan participants who pass away during accumulation. We assume that the market price of risk consists of observable and unobservable factors that follow the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, and the pension fund managers estimate the unobservable component from known information through Bayesian learning. Considering maximizing the expected utility of fund wealth at the terminal time, optimal investment strategies and the corresponding value function are determined using the dynamical programming principle approach and the filtering technique. Additionally, fund managers forsake learning, which results in the presentation of suboptimal strategies and utility losses for comparative analysis. Lastly, numerical analyses are included to demonstrate the impact of model parameters on the optimal strategy.

Proteins and polyphenols are abundant in the daily diet of humans and their interactions influence, among other things, the texture, flavor, and bioaccessibility of food. There are two types of interactions between them: non-covalent interactions and covalent interactions, the latter being irreversible and more powerful. In this review, we systematically summarized advances in the investigation of possible mechanism underlying covalent polyphenols-proteins interaction in food processing, effect of different processing methods on covalent interaction, methods for characterizing covalent complexes, and impacts of covalent interactions on protein structure, function and nutritional value, as well as potential bioavailability of polyphenols. In terms of health promotion of the prepared covalent complexes, health effects such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, regulation of intestinal microbiota and regulation of allergic reactions have been summarized. Also, the possible applications in food industry, especially as foaming agents, emulsifiers and nanomaterials have also been discussed. In order to offer directions for novel research on their interactions in food systems, nutritional value, and health properties in vivo, we considered the present challenges and future perspectives of the topic.

Summary: Doxorubicin (Dox) poses a considerable threat to patients owing to its cardiotoxicity, thus limiting its clinical utility. Optimal cardioprotective intervention strategies are needed to suppress tumor growth but also minimize cardiac side effects. Here, we showed that tragus vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) improved the imbalanced autonomic tone, ameliorated impaired cardiac function and fibrosis, attenuated myocyte apoptosis, and mitochondrial dysfunction compared to those in the Dox group. The beneficial effects were attenuated by methyllycaconitine citrate (MLA). The transcript profile revealed that there were 312 differentially expressed genes and the protection of tVNS and retardation of MLA were related to inflammatory response and NADPH oxidase activity. In addition, tVNS synergizing with Dox inhibited tumor growth and lung metastasis and promoted apoptosis of tumor cells in an anti-tumor immunity manner. These results indicated that non-invasive neuromodulation can play a dual role in preventing Dox-induced cardiotoxicity and suppressing tumor growth through inflammation and oxidative stress.

The early Carboniferous Kushanhe Formation and Hantiereke Formation in the Kushanhe section in the piedmont of the southwestern margin of Tarim Basin are in a medium-deep water sedimentary environment with a stratigraphic thickness of more than 500 m, and the sedimentary facies is slope-shelf facies. Among these deposits, soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) are common, dominated by various types of slumps. The appearance of SSDS is related to the geotectonic environment of early Carboniferous in southwest Tarim Basin. In the Early Carboniferous, the Paleo-Tethys ocean dived under the Tarim plate, forming a back-arc structure, and a structural slope break belt easily appeared along the basin edge, which provided topographic conditions for the development of marginal platform marginal belt and slope facies. Under this background, the ultra-thick volcanic rocks of Wulate Formation accumulate along the subduction zone, and earthquakes with M≥ 5.0 are prone to occur. Landslides related to earthquakes and corresponding SSDS are easily triggered at the outer edge of the slope break zone. The large earthquake induced by tectonic environment is an important trigger factor of early Carboniferous SSDS. Therefore, the appearance of early carboniferous SSDS in Kushanhe section is an important sedimentary response to the early carboniferous piedmont tectonic activities in southwestern Tarim.

Power system stabilizer (PSS) is widely used to improve power system stability. The current parameter coordination optimization method is easy to fall into the local optimization, to solve the problem and find the optimal parameter combination of PSS, the sample screening method based on the similarity index of power system state (SIPSS) and BP neural network is proposed for global optimization parameters of PSS. The SIPSS screening method uses a similar metric index of the grid state variable as the criterion to screen out the required samples. The BP neural network fits the predicted and expected values of the minimum damping ratio of the system after random fluctuations of PSS parameters under various operating modes to minimize the mean square deviation by fitting the streamlined training samples. Firstly, the SIPSS-BP neural network model is obtained by analyzing the mapping relationship between generator power, node power, branch power, and minimum damping ratio. Then, the sensitivity of the PSS parameters damping ratio is calculated, and the PSS parameter optimization model is established. The optimal adjustment of the PSS parameter is obtained, and the minimum damping ratio is modified to improve the system’s stability. Finally, the minimum damping ratio after correction is obtained. The test results of the SIPSS-BP network with the IEEE 3-machines and 9-nodes show that the method can achieve good prediction accuracy, the parameter optimization effect of PSS can be remarkable, and the stability of the power system has been greatly improved.

Abstract Flexible electrodes have demonstrated better biocompatibility than rigid electrodes in relieving tissue encapsulation and long-term recording. Nonhuman primates are closer to humans in their brains’ structural and functional properties, thus making them more suitable than rodents as animal models for potential clinical usage. However, the application of flexible electrodes on nonhuman primates has rarely been reported. In the present study, a flexible multichannel electrode array for nonhuman primates was developed and implemented for extracellular recording in behaving monkeys. To minimize the window of durotomy for reducing possible risks, a guide-tube-compatible implantation solution was designed to deliver the flexible electrodes through the dura into the cortex. The proposed structure for inserting flexible electrodes was characterized ex vivo and validated in vivo. Furthermore, acute recording of multichannel flexible electrodes for the primates was performed. The results showed that the flexible electrodes and implantation method used in this study meet the needs of extracellular recording in nonhuman primates. Task-related neuronal activities with a high signal-to-noise ratio of spikes demonstrated that our whole device is currently a minimally invasive and clinically viable approach for extracellular recording.

Abstract Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have attracted considerable attention in motor and language rehabilitation. Most devices use cap-based non-invasive, headband-based commercial products or microneedle-based invasive approaches, which are constrained for inconvenience, limited applications, inflammation risks and even irreversible damage to soft tissues. Here, we propose in-ear visual and auditory BCIs based on in-ear bioelectronics, named as SpiralE, which can adaptively expand and spiral along the auditory meatus under electrothermal actuation to ensure conformal contact. Participants achieve offline accuracies of 95% in 9-target steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) BCI classification and type target phrases successfully in a calibration-free 40-target online SSVEP speller experiment. Interestingly, in-ear SSVEPs exhibit significant 2nd harmonic tendencies, indicating that in-ear sensing may be complementary for studying harmonic spatial distributions in SSVEP studies. Moreover, natural speech auditory classification accuracy can reach 84% in cocktail party experiments. The SpiralE provides innovative concepts for designing 3D flexible bioelectronics and assists the development of biomedical engineering and neural monitoring.

The wavelength attack utilizes the dependence of beam splitters (BSs) on wavelength to cause legitimate users Alice and Bob to underestimate their excess noise so that Eve can steal more secret keys without being detected. Recently, the wavelength attack on Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has been researched in both fiber and atmospheric channels. However, the wavelength attack may also pose a threat to the case of ocean turbulent channels, which are vital for the secure communication of both ocean sensor networks and submarines. In this work, we propose two wavelength attack schemes on underwater discrete modulated (DM) CV-QKD protocol, which is effective for the case with and without local oscillator (LO) intensity monitor, respectively. In terms of the transmittance properties of the fused biconical taper (FBT) BS, two sets of wavelengths are determined for Eve’s pulse manipulation, which are all located in the so-called blue–green band. The derived successful criterion shows that both attack schemes can control the estimated excess noise of Alice and Bob close to zero by selecting the corresponding condition parameters based on channel transmittance. Additionally, our numerical analysis shows that Eve can steal more bits when the wavelength attack controls the value of the estimated excess noise closer to zero.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) significantly predisposes individuals to diabetes and is a prognostic factor for the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of (-)–gallocatechin gallate (GCG) in alleviating signs of MetS-associated DN in db/db mice. We administered GCG and monitored its effects on several metabolic parameters, including food and water intake, urinary output, blood glucose levels, glucose and insulin homeostasis, lipid profiles, blood pressure, and renal function biomarkers. The main findings indicated that GCG intervention led to marked improvements in these metabolic indicators and renal function, signifying its potential in managing MetS and DN. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed substantial modifications in gene expression, notably the downregulation of pro-inflammatory genes such as S100a8, S100a9, Cd44, Socs3, Mmp3, Mmp9, Nlrp3, IL–1β, Osm, Ptgs2, and Lcn2 and the upregulation of the anti-oxidative gene Gstm3. These genetic alterations suggest significant effects on pathways related to inflammation and oxidative stress. In conclusion, GCG demonstrates therapeutic efficacy for MetS–associated DN, mitigating metabolic disturbances and enhancing renal health by modulating inflammatory and oxidative responses.

In recent years, there has been a considerable amount of research on visual evoked potential (VEP)-based brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). However, it remains a big challenge to detect VEPs elicited by small visual stimuli. To address this challenge, this study employed a 256-electrode high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) cap with 66 electrodes in the parietal and occipital lobes to record EEG signals. An online BCI system based on code-modulated VEP (C-VEP) was designed and implemented with thirty targets modulated by a time-shifted binary pseudo-random sequence. A task-discriminant component analysis (TDCA) algorithm was employed for feature extraction and classification. The offline and online experiments were designed to assess EEG responses and classification performance for comparison across four different stimulus sizes at visual angles of 0.5°, 1°, 2°, and 3°. By optimizing the data length for each subject in the online experiment, information transfer rates (ITRs) of 126.48 ± 14.14 bits/min, 221.73 ± 15.69 bits/min, 258.39 ± 9.28 bits/min, and 266.40 ± 6.52 bits/min were achieved for 0.5°, 1°, 2°, and 3°, respectively. This study further compared the EEG features and classification performance of the 66-electrode layout from the 256-electrode EEG cap, the 32-electrode layout from the 128-electrode EEG cap, and the 21-electrode layout from the 64-electrode EEG cap, elucidating the pivotal importance of a higher electrode density in enhancing the performance of C-VEP BCI systems using small stimuli.

Mild organic substitution is advantageous for sustainable agricultural development. In order to determine the proper fertilization strategy, it is essential to investigate the impact of substituting chemical fertilizers with varying levels of organic manure on soil nutrients, microbial communities, and crop productivity. Four treatments were implemented: no fertilizer, sole chemical fertilizer, 20% organic manure substitution, and 40% organic manure substitution. Bacterial and fungal communities were characterized through high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene V3–V4 region and the V4 region, respectively. The 20% and 40% organic manure substitutions increased soil organic matter (SOM) content, total nitrogen (TN) content, and reduced soil pH compared to the control (CK). The 20% organic manure substitution showed the most significant improvements in soil alkaline phosphatase, urease, and invertase activities. Soil nutrient enhancement increased bacterial alpha diversity, with a milder impact on fungal alpha diversity compared to bacteria. Different fertilization treatments elevated the relative abundance of bacterial Bacteroidetes (8.11%, 21.25%, and 1.88%), Actinomycetes (12.65%, 26.36%, and 15.33%), and fungal Ascomycota (16.19%, 10.44%, and 12.69%), known for degrading recalcitrant organic matter. The sole chemical fertilizer treatment increased the pathogenic Cheatotryiales. Shared species, primarily from bacterial Actinomycetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and fungal Ascomycota phyla, were found at 20% and 40% organic manure substitution levels. Specifically, the 20% organic manure substitution level promoted the relative abundance of beneficial plant growth-promoting taxa, Oxalobacteraceae and Massilia, and suppressed pathogens, with an increase in the relative abundance of the Purpureocillium genus and Mortierellomycota. These findings suggest that a 20% OF substitution can maintain crop yield, enhance soil nutrients and enzyme activities by fostering beneficial soil bacteria, inhibiting soil-borne pathogens, and refining microbial community structure.

In order to achieve the flexible and efficient utilization of distributed energy resources, microgrids (MGs) can enhance the self-healing capability of distribution systems. Conventional primary droop control in microgrids exhibits deviations in voltage and frequency and lacks research on voltage–frequency control during network reconfiguration. Therefore, this paper investigates the control strategy of secondary control for voltage and frequency during the process of reconstructing distribution networks to operate in the form of microgrids after faults. Firstly, the mathematical model of three-phase voltage-source inverters with droop control is analyzed. Then, inspired by the generator’s secondary frequency control strategy, an improved secondary control method based on droop control is proposed, and the effectiveness of the improved droop control strategy is verified. Finally, simulation examples of distribution networks with various dynamic boundary topology changes are designed to simulate a relatively stable control result, validating the proposed strategy.

Background: The changes in hormones, diet, and hygiene associated with pregnancy are associated with oral diseases. There is insufficient awareness of the importance of oral health during pregnancy. This study investigated the oral health status and knowledge amongst pregnant women in Shanghai. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled pregnant women at the Shanghai Red House Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital in December 2020. The Fourth National Oral Health Questionnaire was used to evaluate the oral health status. Decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) were the sum of the number of decayed, missing due to caries, and filled teeth. The chi-square test and Kruskal–Wallis test were used to compare the groups. Results: A total of 224 pregnant women were enrolled. The rates of dental caries were 69.8%, periodontal health was 1.8%, calculus detection was 95.6%, shallow periodontal pocket was 51.1%, deep periodontal pocket was 4.9%, regular oral examination was 22.8%, correct brushing was 49.6%, and prepregnancy oral examination was 20.1%. DMFT was 2.27, and the caries filling ratio was 45.4%. The number of missing teeth increased with age (P < .001). Only 26.3% used dental floss more than once a day, 47.3% rinsed the mouth more than twice a day, and 46.9% cleaned their tongue coating every week. In addition, 99% of the pregnant women agreed that “oral health was vital to their lives” and 97.7% agreed that “regular oral examination was necessary.” Conclusions: The oral health status amongst pregnant women in Shanghai was poor, but oral health awareness and attitudes were relatively high.

Fritillaria crassicaulis S. C. Chen is a precious traditional Chinese medicine, but the number of populations has declined rapidly due to overexploitation. An artificial rapid propagation system was established to screen the suitable plant regeneration method and to explore the efficient propagation method, useful for propagation technology or for further research and development of F. crassicaulis. This study selected scale as the experimental material, set Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium as the basic medium, and optimized the types and proportions of plant growth regulator (PGR) suitable for callus induction, bulblet differentiation and proliferation, and plant regeneration by means of single-factor, full-factorial, and L9 (3)4 orthogonal experiments. Results demonstrate that in the experiment with single exogenous PGR, the high concentration of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) was significantly better than kinetin (KT) to induce bulblets, 2, 4-dichloroacetic acid (2, 4-D) had a significant effect on callus induction, and a higher concentration of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) was beneficial to the occurrence and growth of bulbs, but the rooting effect promoted by indole butyric acid (IBA) was preferable to that by NAA. In MS medium with 0.5 mg/L 2, 4-D and 1.5 mg/L 6-BA, a large number of yellowish-green compact calli could be induced from the scales with the calli induction frequency at 93.3%, and about 11.4% materials directly differentiated bulblets. In the subsequent orthogonal experiment, after the scales were cultured in MS medium with 2.0 mg/L 6-BA, 0.5 mg/L 2, 4-D, and 0.1 mg/L NAA for 20 days, the small yellow and white globular protuberances formed near the incision, but no callus appeared, and many protuberances appeared on the surface of the scales. After 60 days, the protuberances at the incision developed into bulblets directly, while protuberances on the surface of the scales developed into few bulblets but crowded “leaf spines,” which gradually died and disappeared in the later culture; the proliferation coefficient was ∼6.30 then. Experimental results indicate that the optimal rooting medium for bulblets was 1/2MS medium with 2.0 mg/L IBA and 1.0 mg/L activated carbon (AC), with the rooting rate at 95.6%. This study identifies bulblet regeneration of F. crassicaulis, and an efficient direct organogenesis method was established: regenerated bulblets could be induced from scales in one step, so a large number of regenerated plants with the same genotype could be obtained in a short time.

Polyimide (PI)-silica aerogel composite aerogels with low shrinkage (3.7%), low density (0.061 g/cm3), low thermal conductivity (0.0216 W m−1 K−1), high hydrophobicity (146°) and good fire resistance were prepared by incorporating silica aerogel powders into PI matrix. The properties of the aerogels are affected by the type and content of silica aerogel powders. The samples show high compressibility, and the stress at 80% strain increases with the increase of silica aerogel powder content. The addition of inorganic silica aerogel powders (ISAp) can improve the thermal stability of the aerogel and the fire resistance and structural integrity of the sample under flame, but has adverse effect on moisture resistance. While the addition of polyvinylpolymethylsiloxane aerogel powders (PAp) improves the moisture resistance of the aerogel but weakens the thermal stability and fire resistance. The introduction of both ISAp and PAp can reduce the thermal conductivity of the aerogel, and the samples exhibit good thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, ground equivalent simulation tests were carried out to verify the adaptability of these aerogels in the space environment. The sample meets the standard requirements and shows stable structure and performance during the tests, which proves its potential application in the aerospace field.

BackgroundThe advantages of multimodal digitally transformed mobile health management for patients diagnosed with mild to moderate hypertension are not yet established. ObjectiveWe aim to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of a novel WeChat-based multimodal digital transforming management model in mobile health blood pressure (BP) management. MethodsThis randomized controlled clinical trial included 175 individuals with new-onset mild to moderate hypertension who were admitted to our center between September and October 2022. The patients were randomly assigned to either the multimodal intervention group (n=88) or the usual care group (n=87). The primary composite outcome was home and office BP differences after 6 months. The major secondary outcomes were 6-month quality-of-life scores, including the self-rating anxiety scale, self-rating depression scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. ABSTRACTRadiotherapy could regulate systemic antitumor immunity, while the immune state in the tumor microenvironment (TME) also affects the efficacy of radiotherapy. We have found that higher CD8+ T cell infiltration is associated with longer overall survival of lung adenocarcinoma and melanoma patients receiving radiotherapy. 8-Gray radiation increased the transcriptional levels of chemokines in tumor cells in vitro. However, it was not sufficient to induce significant lymphocyte infiltration in vivo. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) has been reported to inactivate chemokines via post-translational truncation. Single-cell sequencing revealed that dendritic cells (DCs) had a higher DPP4 expression among other cells in the TME and upregulated DPP4 expression after radiation. Combining a DPP4 inhibitor with radiotherapy could promote chemokines expression and T cell infiltration in the TME, enhancing the antitumor effect of radiotherapy. Moreover, this therapy further enhanced the therapeutic efficacy of anti-PD-1. In this study, we demonstrated the underlying mechanism of why radiotherapy failed to induce sufficient T cell infiltration and proposed an effective strategy to promote T cell infiltration and sensitize radiotherapy. These findings demonstrate the translational value of DPP4 inhibition as a complementary approach to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy and the combination of radiotherapy with immunotherapy.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) develops from gastric precancerous lesions (GPL), and early diagnosis and treatment at the premalignant stage may achieve a higher benefit‒cost ratio with a reduced necessity for surgery. However, reliable noninvasive screening biomarkers of GPL are currently lacking. Methods: The marker genes of GPL encoding extracellular proteins were identified by bioinformatics analysis and further verified by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry assays. Serum samples were collected to measure the levels of SERPINB5, the diagnostic efficacy of which was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Finally, the effect of SERPINB5 on the phenotypic conversion of macrophages was verified by public data and in vitro experiments. Results: SERPINB5 was identified as an extracellular biomarker of GPL that had good diagnostic efficacy. High expression of SERPINB5 was observed in the epithelial cells and adjacent extracellular matrix on sections of gastric high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN). Importantly, SERPINB5 determined in serum was significantly increased in the HGIN group, and the AUC for discriminating between HGIN and chronic gastritis or low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia was 0.9936 and 0.9750, respectively. Moreover, SERPINB5 expression was positively correlated with macrophage infiltration, and M1 marker NOS2 expression, but negatively correlated with M2 marker CSF1R expression. In THP-1-derived macrophages, SERPINB5 upregulated expression of M1-related cytokines TNF-α and IL-12, and M1 marker CD86, but suppressed production of M2-related cytokines TGF-β and IL-10. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that SERPINB5 may serve as a promising noninvasive serum biomarker for gastric HGIN screening and regulate macrophage phenotype conversion.

A steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)- based brain-computer interface (BCI) can either achieve high classification accuracy in the case of sufficient training data or suppress the training stage at the cost of low accuracy. Although some researches attempted to conquer the dilemma between performance and practicality, a highly effective approach has not yet been established. In this paper, we propose a canonical correlation analysis (CCA)-based transfer learning framework for improving the performance of an SSVEP BCI and reducing its calibration effort. Three spatial filters are optimized by a CCA algorithm with intra- and inter-subject EEG data (IISCCA), two template signals are estimated separately with the EEG data from the target subject and a set of source subjects and six coefficients are yielded by correlation analysis between a testing signal and each of the two templates after they are filtered by each of the three spatial filters. The feature signal used for classification is extracted by the sum of squared coefficients multiplied by their signs and the frequency of the testing signal is recognized by template matching. To reduce the individual discrepancy between subjects, an accuracy-based subject selection (ASS) algorithm is developed for screening those source subjects whose EEG data are more similar to those of the target subject. The proposed ASS-IISCCA integrates both subject-specific models and subject-independent information for the frequency recognition of SSVEP signals. The performance of ASS-IISCCA was evaluated on a benchmark data set with 35 subjects and compared with the state-of-the-art algorithm task-related component analysis (TRCA). The results show that ASS-IISCCA can significantly improve the performance of SSVEP BCIs with a small number of training trials from a new user, thus helping to facilitate their applications in real world.

The brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) have been extensively explored due to their advantages in terms of high communication speed and smaller calibration time. The visual stimuli in the low- and medium-frequency ranges are adopted in most of the existing studies for eliciting SSVEPs. However, there is a need to further improve the comfort of these systems. The high-frequency visual stimuli have been used to build BCI systems and are generally considered to significantly improve the visual comfort, but their performance is relatively low. The distinguishability of 16-class SSVEPs encoded by the three frequency ranges, i.e., 31-34.75 Hz with an interval of 0.25 Hz, 31-38.5 Hz with an interval of 0.5 Hz, 31-46 Hz with an interval of 1 Hz, is explored in this study. We compare classification accuracy and information transfer rate (ITR) of the corresponding BCI system. According to the optimized frequency range, this study builds an online 16-target high frequency SSVEP-BCI and verifies the feasibility of the proposed system based on 21 healthy subjects. The BCI based on visual stimuli with the narrowest frequency range, i.e., 31-34.5 Hz, have the highest ITR. Therefore, the narrowest frequency range is adopted to build an online BCI system. An averaged ITR obtained from the online experiment is 153.79 ±6.39 bits/min. These findings contribute to the development of more efficient and comfortable SSVEP-based BCIs.

Objective: The tradeoff between calibration effort and model performance still hinders the user experience for steady-state visual evoked brain-computer interfaces (SSVEP-BCI). To address this issue and improve model generalizability, this work investigated the adaptation from the cross-dataset model to avoid the training process, while maintaining high prediction ability. Methods: When a new subject enrolls, a group of user-independent (UI) models is recommended as the representative from a multi-source data pool. The representative model is then augmented with online adaptation and transfer learning techniques based on user-dependent (UD) data. The proposed method is validated on both offline (N=55) and online (N=12) experiments. Results: Compared with the UD adaptation, the recommended representative model relieved approximately 160 trials of calibration efforts for a new user. In the online experiment, the time window decreased from 2 s to 0.56±0.2 s, while maintaining high prediction accuracy of 0.89-0.96. Finally, the proposed method achieved the average information transfer rate (ITR) of 243.49 bits/min, which is the highest ITR ever reported in a complete calibration-free setting. The results of the offline result were consistent with the online experiment. Conclusion: Representatives can be recommended even in a cross-subject/device/session situation. With the help of represented UI data, the proposed method can achieve sustained high performance without a training process. Significance: This work provides an adaptive approach to the transferable model for SSVEP-BCIs, enabling a more generalized, plug-and-play and high-performance BCI free of calibrations.

Abstract Implantable intracortical microelectrodes can record a neuron’s rapidly changing action potentials (spikes). In vivo neural activity recording methods often have either high temporal or spatial resolution, but not both. There is an increasing need to record more neurons over a longer duration in vivo. However, there remain many challenges to overcome before achieving long-term, stable, high-quality recordings and realizing comprehensive, accurate brain activity analysis. Based on the vision of an idealized implantable microelectrode device, the performance requirements for microelectrodes are divided into four aspects, including recording quality, recording stability, recording throughput, and multifunctionality, which are presented in order of importance. The challenges and current possible solutions for implantable microelectrodes are given from the perspective of each aspect. The current developments in microelectrode technology are analyzed and summarized.

The English grain aphid (EGA) (Sitobion avenae F.) is one of the most destructive species of aphids in wheat- (Triticum aestivum L.) planting areas worldwide. Large quantities of insecticides are usually used to control aphid damage. The identification of new EGA-resistant genes is necessary for sustainable wheat production. The objective of this study was to identify candidate genes for EGA resistance from stable quantitative trait loci (QTLs). We previously constructed a genetic map of unigenes (UG-Map) with 31,445 polymorphic sub-unigenes via the RNA sequencing of ‘TN18 × LM6’ recombinant inbred lines (TL-RILs). The relative aphid index (RAI) for the TL-RILs was investigated for two growing seasons, with three measured times (MTs) in each season. Using the UG-Map, 43 candidate genes were identified from 22 stable QTLs, with an average of 1.95 candidate genes per QTL. Among the 34 candidate genes annotated in the reference genome Chinese Spring (CS) RefSeq v1.1, the homologous genes of seven candidate genes, TraesCS1A02G-319900, TraesCS1B02G397300, TraesCS2D02G460800, TraesCS4A02G015600LC, TraesCS5B02G329200, TraesCS-6A02G000600 and TraesCS6A02G418600LC have been previously reported to play roles in aphid resistance. This suggests that these genes are strongly associated with EGA resistance in wheat. The candidate genes in this study should facilitate the cloning of EGA-resistant genes and genetic improvement in wheat breeding programs.

Coastal cities often face typhoons and urban water logs, which can cause power outages and significant economic losses. Therefore, it is necessary to study the impact of these disasters on urban distribution networks and improve their flexibility. This paper presents a method for predicting power-grid failure rates in typhoons and water logs and suggests a strategy for improving network elasticity after the disaster. It is crucial for the operation and maintenance of power distribution systems during typhoon and water-logging disasters. By mapping the wind speed and water depth at the corresponding positions in the evolution of wind and water logging disasters to the vulnerability curve, the failure probability of the corresponding nodes is obtained, the fault scenario is generated randomly, and the proposed dynamic reconstruction method, which can react in real-time to the damage the distribution system received, has been tested on a modified 33-node and a 118-node distribution network, with 3 and 11 distribution generators loaded, respectively. The results proved that this method can effectively improve the resiliency of the distribution network after a disaster compared with the traditional static reconstruction method, especially in the case of long-lasting wind and flood disasters that have complex and significant impacts on the distribution system, with about 26% load supply for the 33-node system and nearly 95% for the 118-node system.

We conduct an in-depth spectral analysis of ∼1 Ms XMM-Newton data of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396. The long exposure ensures high spectral quality and provides us with a detailed look at the intrinsic absorption and emission features toward this target. Two warm-absorber (WA) components with different ionization states ( $\mathrm{log}(\xi /\mathrm{erg}\,\mathrm{cm}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1})\sim 4$ and $\mathrm{log}(\xi /\mathrm{erg}\,\mathrm{cm}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1})\sim 2.5\mbox{--}3$ ) are required to explain the intrinsic absorption features in the Reflection Grating Spectrometer spectra. The estimated outflow velocities are around −1400 km s ^−1 and −(100–300) km s ^−1 for the high- and low-ionization WA components, respectively. Both absorbers are located beyond the broad-line region and cannot significantly affect the host environment. We analyze the warm absorbers in different flux states. We also examine the 2007 May observation in the low and high phases of quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO). In contrast to previous analyses showing a negative correlation between the high-ionization WA and the QPO phase, we have found no such variation in this WA component. We discover a broad emission bump in the spectral range of ∼12–18 Å, covering the primary features of the high-ionization WA. This emission bump shows a dramatic change in different source states, and its intensity may positively correlate with the QPO phase. The absence of this emission bump in previous work may contribute to the suggested WA–QPO connection.
