Abstract Incomplete tumor removal after microwave ablation (MWA), a widely used hyperthermia-based therapy, can result in tumor recurrence. Herein, attenuated Salmonella typhimurium VNP20009 is engineered to release interleukin-15&interleukin-15-receptor-alpha (IL-15&IL-15Rα) in response to mildly elevated temperature. Such 15&15R@VNP colonizes in tumors upon intravenous injection, and the expression of IL-15&IL-15Rα is triggered by MWA. Anti-tumor immune responses are elicited, efficiently suppressing tumor growth even after incomplete microwave ablation. We further design VNP20009 with thermal-responsive co-expression of both IL-15&IL-15Rα and soluble programmed cell death protein (sPD-1). Such sPD-1-15&15R@VNP can also reverse the functional suppression of immune cells driven by PD-1/PD-L1 axis, reinvigorating progenitor exhausted T cells, a critical subset of cytotoxic T lymphocytes responsive to immune checkpoint blockade. Such thermal-responsive engineered bacteria are thus a promising adjuvant therapy to potentiate tumor ablation therapies via effectively activating antitumor immunity.

Objectives We aim to investigate the ethical attitudes of the Chinese population toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (WLST) in disorders of consciousness (DoC) patients.Methods A self-administered questionnaire concerning WLST was distributed to Chinese medical professionals and non-medical participants between February and July 2022. Statistical analysis included chi-square tests and logistic regressions.Results A total of 1223 Chinese participants responded to the questionnaire (39% of whom were medical professionals). Less than one third of participants reported positive attitudes towards withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH), antibiotics, and do-not-resuscitation (DNR) orders in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) (30%, 24%, 24%) and minimally conscious state (MCS) (23%, 19%, 15%). Abstract Cannabis plants produce a spectrum of secondary metabolites, encompassing cannabinoids and more than 300 non‐cannabinoid compounds. Among these, anthocyanins have important functions in plants and also have well documented health benefits. Anthocyanins are largely responsible for the red/purple color phenotypes in plants. Although some well‐known Cannabis varieties display a wide range of red/purple pigmentation, the genetic underpinnings of anthocyanin biosynthesis have not been well characterized in Cannabis. This study unveils the genetic diversity of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes found in Cannabis, and we characterize the diversity of anthocyanins and related phenolics found in four differently pigmented Cannabis varieties. Our investigation revealed that the genes 4CL, CHS, F3H, F3′H, FLS, DFR, ANS, and OMT exhibited the strongest correlation with anthocyanin accumulation in Cannabis leaves. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway and shed light on the molecular mechanisms governing Cannabis leaf pigmentation.

Background: The diagnosis of and life-sustaining treatment (LST) for patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) and locked-in syndrome (LIS) have been the subject of intense debate. Objective: We aim to investigate the application of diagnostic knowledge, opinions about the administration of LST, and ethical challenges related to DoC and LIS. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: A survey was conducted among Chinese neurologists. Questionnaires included three vignettes (unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS); minimally conscious state (MCS), and LIS). They were randomly distributed among neurologists from August 2018 to December 2019. Results: A sample of 360 questionnaires was included (response rate: 78%). Overall, 63% of the participants chose the correct diagnostic category. The neurologists who received the MCS case chose the category more accurately than the neurologists with the UWS ( p 0.05). Deciding for patients in the absence of surrogates was rated extremely challenging. Conclusion: A large proportion of Chinese neurologists in our study didn’t apply the accurate diagnostic categories to the description of DoC and LIS patients. This calls for more education and training. Most Chinese neurologists were reluctant to limit LST for patients. This may indicate that there may be a need to emphasize the allocation of more resources toward long-term care in China.

Abstract Objectives Surrogate decision-making by family caregivers for patients with severe brain injury is influenced by the availability and understanding of relevant information and expectations for future rehabilitation. We aimed to compare the consistency of family caregivers’ perceptions with clinical diagnoses and to inform their expectation of prognosis in the future. Methods The Coma Recovery Scale-Revised was used to assess the diagnosis of inpatients with severe brain injury between February 2019 and February 2020. A main family caregiver was included per patient. The family caregiver’s perception of the patient’s consciousness and expectations of future recovery were collected through questionnaires and compared consistently with the clinical diagnosis. Results The final sample included 101 main family caregivers of patients (57 UWS, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, 37 MCS, minimally conscious state, 7 EMCS, emergence from MCS) with severe brain injury. Only 57 family caregivers correctly assessed the level of consciousness as indicated by the CRS-R, showing weak consistency (Kappa = 0.217, P = 0.002). Family caregivers’ demographic characteristics and CRS-R diagnosis influenced the consistency between perception and clinical diagnosis. Family caregivers who provided hands-on care to patients showed higher levels of consistent perception (AOR = 12.24, 95% CI = 2.06-73.00, P = 0.006). Compared to UWS, the family caregivers of MCS patients were more likely to have a correct perception (OR = 7.68, 95% CI = 1.34–44.06). Family caregivers had positive expectations for patients’ recovery in terms of both communication and returning to normal life. Conclusion Nearly half of family caregivers have inadequate understanding of their relative’s level of consciousness, and most of them report overly optimistic expectations that do not align with clinical diagnosis. Providing more medical information to family caregivers to support their surrogate decision-making process is essential.

Summary: Autologous cancer vaccines represent a promising therapeutic approach against tumor relapse. Herein, a concise biomineralization strategy was developed to prepare an immunostimulatory autologous cancer vaccine through protein antigen-mediated growth of flower-like manganese phosphate (MnP) nanoparticles. In addition to inheriting the cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING)-activating capacity of Mn2+, the resulting ovalbumin (OVA)-loaded MnP (OVA@MnP) nanoparticles with superior stability and pH-responsiveness enabled efficient priming of antigen-specific CD8+ T cell expansion through promoting the endo/lysosome escape and subsequent antigen cross-presentation of OVA. Resultantly, OVA@MnP vaccines upon subcutaneous vaccination elicited both prophylactic and therapeutic effects against OVA-expressing B16-F10 melanoma. Furthermore, the biomineralized autologous cancer vaccines prepared from the whole tumor cell lysates of the dissected tumors suppressed the growth of residual tumors, particularly in combination with anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. This study highlights a simple biomineralization approach for the controllable synthesis of cGAS-STING-activating autologous cancer vaccines to suppress postsurgical tumor relapse.

Abstract Phosphate solubilizing fungi Penicillium oxalicum (POX) and Red yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Rho) have been applied in Pb remediation with the combination of fluorapatite (FAp), respectively. The secretion of oxalic acid by POX and the production of extracellular polymers (EPS) by Rho dominate the Pb remediation. In this study, the potential of Pb remediation by the fungal combined system (POX and Rho) with FAp was investigated. After six days of incubation, the combination of POX and Rho showed the highest Pb remove ratio (99.7%) and the lowest TCLP-Pb concentration (2.9 mg/L). The EPS combined with POX also enhanced Pb remediation, which has a 99.3% Pb removal ratio and 5.5 mg/L TCLP-Pb concentration. Meanwhile, Rho and EPS can also stimulate POX to secrete more oxalic acid, which reached 1510.1 and 1450.6 mg/L in six days, respectively. The secreted oxalic acid can promote FAp dissolution and the formation of lead oxalate and pyromorphite. Meanwhile, the EPS produced by Rho can combine with Pb to form EPS-Pb. In the combined system of POX + Rho and POX + EPS, all of the lead oxalate, pyromorphite, and EPS-Pb were observed. Our findings suggest that the combined application of POX and Rho with FAp is an effective approach for enhancing Pb remediation.

Ready-to-cook (RTC) foods can significantly improve the cooking experience of busy or unskillful consumers, based on production involving technical combinations of food processing and packaging. Initialized by a market survey of 172 products in Beijing, this systematic review analyzes RTC foods’ development status according to ingredients, packaging, and storage conditions to further clarify the scope of RTC foods. The working principles and efficacy of various food processing techniques, such as washing, cutting, marinating, and frying, and packaging design or innovations such as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) were both summarized in detail, with attention to their ability to extend shelf life, reduce safety risks, and maximize production efficiency in RTC food production. The cutting-edge technologies that may potentially apply in the RTC food processing or packaging sector were compared with current approaches to visualize the direction of future developments. In conclusion, we have observed the specific pattern of RTC food varieties and packaging formats in the Beijing market and revealed the advancements in RTC food technologies that will continue playing a critical role in shaping this growing market, while challenges in scalability, cost-efficiency, and sustainability remain key areas for future research. The data and perspectives presented will articulate the conceptions and existing challenges of RTC food, foster consumer perception and recognition of similar products, and deliver useful guidance for stakeholders interested in such products.

Societal Impact Statement In blueberry, fruit color is one of the most important quality traits affecting consumers' choices. Both pigments and waxes impact fruit color; however, their roles have not been clearly elucidated. Here, the contributions of waxes and anthocyanins to fruit color are characterized. A higher content of β‐diketones—the second largest wax group in blueberries—determines a lighter fruit color; hence revealing that, at harvest, waxes contribute more than anthocyanins in determining variations in fruit color among blueberry varieties. Summary Fruit color is one of the major quality traits determining the marketability of fruits by affecting consumers' choices. In blueberries, although fruit surface color is mainly determined by pigments (e.g., anthocyanins), cuticular waxes also play a role in modulating the surface color, and a lighter color given by a dense wax bloom is normally preferred by consumers. This study investigated the content and composition of cuticular waxes and their roles in modulating fruit surface color in 12 (seven northern highbush, three southern highbush, and two hybrids) blueberry genotypes at harvest (H1, representing the first commercial pick, and H2, representing the second commercial pick). The ultrastructural morphology of cuticular waxes was analyzed in four selected genotypes by scanning electron microscopy. The level and profile of anthocyanins and their contributions to the color were also assessed. Total cuticular wax content ranged from 27.7 to 95.8 μg cm−2 among genotypes at H1 and decreased by an average of 23.9% from H1 to H2. Triterpenoids (62.5% of the total cuticular waxes on average) and β‐diketones (22.9% on average) were the first and second largest wax groups in all genotypes, respectively. β‐Diketones were previously proven to affect leaf surface color in wheat; in this study, their content strongly correlated with the lightness of the blueberry surface. Scanning electron microscopy revealed distinct wax morphologies among genotypes. No significant relationships were found between total or individual anthocyanin concentrations and fruit surface color. Our results suggest that, at harvest, variation in the fruit surface color among blueberry genotypes is more closely related to the content and composition of cuticular waxes than the level and profile of anthocyanins, with β‐diketones being particularly important. This study provides new insights for blueberry breeding programs aiming to improve the surface color in order to meet the market demand.

Introduction: Cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) and depression are risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia. We investigated the independent and synergistic associations of CMM and depression on longitudinal cognitive deterioration in two Asian cohorts of elderly at varying cognitive status with differed underlying neuropathology. Methods: Eligible memory clinic (Harmonization) and stroke patients (Coast) aged ≥50 completed cognitive and clinical assessments at baseline and up to 5 follow-up visits in 6 years. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases were assessed. Presence of CMM was defined as having two or more CMDs. Depression was defined by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) of ≥5. Biomarkers including cerebral beta-amyloid, cerebrovascular disease and ApoE genotype, were assessed by MRI and laboratory tests. Cognitive outcomes included cognitive trajectory patterns identified by the group-based trajectory model (GBTM) and the rate of change of global cognitive z-score. Multivariable logistic models and mixed models were conducted to assess the associations of CMM(+) and depression(+) with longitudinal cognitive decline. Stratification analysis by demographics and biomarkers was conducted. Results: Among a total of 809 (Harmonization: 586, Coast: 223) participants, three cognitive trajectories were identified by the GBTM in each cohort. CMM(+) was independently associated with longitudinal cognitive decline. There was a significant interaction among CMM, depression and time with longitudinal cognition in both cohorts (ps of β(CMM*depression*time) < 0.05). Compared with reference group, CMM(+) and depression(+) were associated with patterns of rapid decline (OR=3.58, =95%CI=(1.64,7.81)) and slow decline (OR=3.32, 95%CI=(1.20,9.19)) in Harmonization, and decline/low stable (OR=4.01, 95%CI=(1.03,15.50)) in Coast. Participants with CMM(+) and depression(+) had a 0.24 (95%CI= -0.49, -0.01) and 0.13 (95%CI=-0.24,-0.01) units decline per year on global cognitive z-scores in Harmonization and Coast, respectively, compared with those with CMM(-) and depression(-). The combined effect between CMM and depression was more pronounced among older and male participants, as well as APOEε4 carriers. Discussion: Our study demonstrated a synergistic effect between CMM and depression on longitudinal cognitive decline among elderly with differed underlying neuropathology. Targeting both CMM and depression in preventing cognitive decline may lead to greater effectiveness.

Fruit wines have gained great interest in recent years due to the increasingly diverse demands of consumers for different fruit wines with different colors, flavors, and nutritional values. Some fruits such as blueberry and strawberry are perishable and have a short shelf life. The production of fruit wine reduces fruit losses after harvest and enhances fruit utilization. The production of fruit wine with premium quality is determined by both intrinsic (i.e., genetic background) and extrinsic factors (e.g., yeast and fermentation protocol). This article provides an updated overview on the strategies and technologies aiming to improve the quality of fruit wines. Recent progress in improving fruit wine quality by variety selection, post-harvest treatments, yeast selection, fermentation protocols, fermentation conditions, and aging technologies has been comprehensively reviewed.

Adipic acid is an important building block of polymers, although its production relies on harmful reagents. Here, authors examined surfactant-modified nickel hydroxide for adipic acid electrosynthesis coupled with hydrogen gas evolution.

Blueberry consumption has been a burgeoning interest attributed to their nutritional and health benefits. However, the main limitation to blueberry marketability is their perishability due to water loss, fungal, and mechanical damage during post-harvest preservation. In this study, pulsed light (PL) treatments with doses of 3, 6 and 9 J cm-2 were applied in the 6-week storage of highbush blueberry (cv. Draper) at 0.5°C under 90-95% relative humidity (RH) conditions. The quality changes of berry were assessed by using physicochemical attributes and antioxidant activity bi-weekly at week 0, 2, 4, 6. The results show that in spite of the partial loss of the antioxidant activity and total soluble solids (TSS), PL at dose of 6 J cm-2 was found to increase firmness and titratable acidity (TA), and decrease weight loss, rot incidence, and pH during post-harvest storage, which lead to a better maintenance of blueberry quality and shelf-life extension.

Stakeholder engagement (SE) is an important factor in making a project successful. Steered by the resource-based value (RBV) and stakeholder theories, this paper aims to explore not only the correlation between sustainable project management (SPM) and sustainable project success (SPS), but also the moderating effect of SE on this connection. Data was gathered from 365 questionnaires distributed to construction project professionals in China. Structural equation modelling was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results confirm that both SPM and SE positively affect SPS, but the positive moderating effects of SE were found to be insignificant. This article provides the basis for the Chinese construction industry to determine how to achieve SPS through the enhanced implementation of SPM and effective SE.

Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, drug therapies that can reverse the maladaptive process and restore heart function are limited. Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLPs) are one of the main active components of G. lucidum (Ganoderma lucidum), and they have various pharmacological effects. GLPs have been used as Chinese medicine prescriptions for clinical treatment. In this study, cardiac hypertrophy was induced by transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in mice. We found that GLPs ameliorate Ang II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in vitro and attenuate pressure overload–induced cardiac hypertrophy in vivo. Further research indicated that GLPs attenuated the mRNA levels of hypertrophic and fibrotic markers to inhibit cardiac hypertrophy through the PPARγ/PGC-1α pathway. Overall, these results indicate that GLPs inhibit cardiac hypertrophy through downregulating key genes for hypertrophy and fibrosis and attenuate pressure overload-induced pathological cardiac hypertrophy by activating PPARγ. This study provides important theoretical support for the potential of using GLPs to treat pathological myocardial hypertrophy and heart failure.

It is crucial to construct an efficient catalyst with high activity and excellent selectivity for realizing CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2ER) to high-value-added chemicals, especially the C2 products. Density functional theory (DFT) provides a powerful tool for investigating the promotional effect on C2 selectivity of finely tuned catalyst structures, which is currently difficult to control using experimental techniques, such as interatomic distances. In the work, 5 Cu2O catalyst models are constructed with different Cu-Cu atomic spacing (dCu-Cu). The results of DFT calculations show that adjusting the dCu-Cu can effectively tailor the electronic structures of active sites, enhance catalytic activity, and improve product selectivity. Specifically, the Cu atom pair spaced at dCu-Cu = 2.5 Å could optimize the adsorption configuration of *CO and enhance the binding strength of *CO, thus improving *CO adsorption energy and reducing the energy barrier of C-C coupling. The work proves the feasibility of spacing effect in enhancing the C2H4 selectivity of CO2ER and provides a new idea for the catalyst modification for other reactions of polyprotons-coupled electrons.

Abstract Previous deep learning methods usually required large‐scale annotated data, which is computationally exhaustive and unrealistic in certain scenarios. Therefore, few‐shot learning, where only a few annotated training images are available for training, has attracted increasing attention these days, showing huge potential in practical applications, such as portable equipment or security inspection, and so on. However, current few‐shot learning methods usually neglect the valuable semantic correlations between samples, thereby failing in extracting discriminating relations to achieve accurate predictive results. In this work, extending on a recent state‐of‐the‐art few‐shot learning method, transductive relation‐propagation network (TRPN), which considers the correlations between training samples, a constrained relation‐propagation network is proposed to further regularise the distilled correlations and thus achieve favourable few‐shot classification performance. The proposed framework contains three main components, namely preprocess module, relational propagation module, and relation constraint module. First, sample features are extracted and a relation graph node is constructed by treating the relation of each support–query pair as a graph node in the preprocess module. After that, in the relation propagation module (RPM), the valuable information of support–query pairs is modelled and propagated to directly generate the relational representations for further prediction. Then, a relation constraint module is introduced to regularise the relational representations and make it consistent with the ground‐truth relations as much as possible. With the guidance of the effective RPM and relation constraint module, the relational representations of the support–query pairs are distinguishable and thus can achieve accurate predictive results. Comprehensive experiments conducted on widely used benchmarks validate the effectiveness of our method compared to state‐of‐the‐art few‐shot classification approaches.

In the field of shield tunnels, the occurrence of uneven longitudinal settlement in segment linings has presented persistent challenges, including heightened risks of localized damage and water leakage. While the adoption of a secondary lining has been proposed as a viable solution to these issues, the question of how to select an appropriate construction time for the secondary lining, one that enables it to fully harness its load-bearing capacity while optimizing the tunnel’s overall stress and deformation characteristics, continues to be a pressing concern. To address this issue, this study established a three-dimensional longitudinal refined numerical model of double-layer-lined shield tunnel. In addition, the deformation degree of the segment lining was used as a time indicator to define the construction time for the secondary lining. Subsequently, an analysis of the impact of the construction time of the secondary lining on the longitudinal mechanical properties of the double-layer-lined shield tunnel is conducted through an assessment of tunnel longitudinal deformation and structural stress. The research findings indicated that the construction of the secondary lining improved the longitudinal deformation resistance of shield tunnels. Simultaneously, it led to a significant increase in the longitudinal shear forces within the segment lining and a notable reduction in longitudinal bending moments. Moreover, the construction time of the secondary lining played a pivotal role in these alterations. Considering the longitudinal force situations and load-bearing characteristics of the double-layer lining structure, it was determined that the optimal construction time for the secondary lining fell within the range of 20% to 40% of the total construction duration. In this scenario, the deformation and internal forces within the segment lining remained within permissible limits. Additionally, both the segment lining and the secondary lining were able to fully utilize their load-bearing capacities, ensuring the economic and safety aspects of the tunnel.

SPM (sustainable project management) is vital to enhancing the success of projects. Despite several studies dealing with the connection between SPM and project success, this nexus is still insufficiently addressed. Steered by institutional theory and resource-based value theory, the purpose of this article is to investigate not only the link between SPM and SPS (sustainable project success), but also the mediating effect of SPP (sustainable project planning) on this connection, and the antecedent role of the institutional pressures (mimetic isomorphism pressure, MIP; normative isomorphism pressure, NIP) on SPM. To test the proposed hypotheses, this article applies PLS-SEM (partial least squares structural equation modeling) and recruited 365 project professionals who have experience in participating in SPM projects in China’s construction industry. The results confirm that both MIP and NIP significantly affect SPM, with NIP being the most significant. Moreover, the findings evidence that SPM had a significantly positive impact on SPS and SPP, and SPP had a significantly positive effect on SPS. Furthermore, the results also evidence that SPP mediates the effect of SPM on SPS. These findings provide empirical evidence for construction companies to understand SPM in the Chinese construction industry. They may also help policymakers to formulate proper policies to promote SPM to achieve sustainable development.

Zero-field optically pumped magnetometers operating in the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) regime have been extensively studied, and usually depend on zeroth-order parametric resonance to measure the magnetic field. However, the studies conducted on this topic lack thorough analyses and in-depth discussion of nonzero-order magnetic resonances in single-beam SERF magnetometers. In this paper, we analyzed the nonzero-order resonance, especially the first-order resonance, based on a single-beam SERF magnetometer, and discussed its various applications. A comprehensive theoretical analysis and experiments were conducted with respect to multiple functions, including nonzero finite magnetic field measurements, spin polarization measurement, and in situ coil constant calibration. The results showed that first-order resonance can be utilized for nonzerofinite magnetic field measurements, and the spin polarization of alkali-metal atoms can be determined by measuring the slowing-down factor using the resonance condition. Furthermore, acquiring the first-order resonance point at an equivalent zero pump light power through fitting offers an approach for quick and precise in situ coil constant calibration. This study contributes to the applications of SERF magnetometers in nonzero finite magnetic fields.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is the dominant strain used to produce γ-polyglutamic acid from inulin, a non-grain raw material. B. amyloliquefaciens has a highly efficient tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolic flux and glutamate synthesis ability. These features confer great potential for the synthesis of glutamate derivatives. However, it is challenging to efficiently convert high levels of glutamate to a particular glutamate derivative. Here, we conducted a systematic study on the biosynthesis of L-ornithine by B. amyloliquefaciens using inulin. First, the polyglutamate synthase gene pgsBCA of B. amyloliquefaciens NB was knocked out to hinder polyglutamate synthesis, resulting in the accumulation of intracellular glutamate and ATP. Second, a modular engineering strategy was applied to coordinate the degradation pathway, precursor competition pathway, and L-ornithine synthesis pathway to prompt high levels of intracellular precursor glutamate for l-ornithine synthesis. In addition, the high-efficiency L-ornithine transporter was further screened and overexpressed to reduce the feedback inhibition of L-ornithine on the synthesis pathway. Combining these strategies with further fermentation optimizations, we achieved a final L-ornithine titer of 31.3 g/L from inulin. Overall, these strategies hold great potential for strengthening microbial synthesis of high value-added products derived from glutamate.

Emerging evidence supports that oral microbiota are associated with health and diseases of the esophagus. How oral microbiota change in Chinese patients with esophageal cancer (EC) is unknown, neither is their biomarker role. For an objective to understand alterations of oral microbiota in Chinese EC patients, we conducted a case-control study including saliva samples from 39 EC patients and 51 healthy volunteers. 16S rDNA genes of V3-V4 variable regions were sequenced to identify taxon. Relationship between oral flora and disease was analyzed according to alpha diversity and beta diversity. Resultantly, the Shannon index (p = 0.2) and the Simpson diversity index (p = 0.071) were not significant between the two groups. Yet we still found several species different in abundance between the two groups. For the EC group, the most significantly increased taxa were Firmicutes, Negativicutes, Selenomonadales, Prevotellaceae, Prevotella, and Veillonellaceae, while the most significantly decreased taxa were Proteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Neisseriales, Neisseriaceae, and Neisseria. In conclusion, there are significant alterations in abundance of some oral microbiomes between the EC patients and the healthy controls in the studied Chinese participants, which may be meaningful for predicting the development of EC, and the potential roles of these species in EC development deserve further studies.

Background and AimReflux Esophagitis (RE) is caused by a variety of factors including anatomical and functional alterations involved in the pathogenesis. Oral microbiota is influenced by many factors such as heredity, nutrition, environments and host conditions, but little is known about relationship between oral microbiota and RE. The aim of this study was to explore whether the oral microbiota is changed in patients with RE.MethodsTo clarify this correlation, fresh saliva samples from all subjects were collected and then oral microorganism diversity was analysed in 55 patients with RE and 51 controls via hypervariable tag sequencing and analyzing the V3–V4 region of the 16S rDNA gene.ResultsThere was no difference found in oral microbial diversity between RE patients and healthy controls by Shannon diversity index (p=0.60) and Simpson diversity index (p= 0.38). The abundance of Proteobacteria was lower, but Bacteroidetes was higher in patients with RE at the phylum level. At the genus level the abundances of Prevotella, Veillonella, Megasphaera, Peptostreptococcus, Atopobium, Oribacterium, Eubacterium, and Lachnoanaerobaculum were increased, while Neisseria, Streptococcus, Rothia, Granulicatella, Gemella, Aggregatibacter, Treponema, Campylobacter, Filifactor, Corynebacterium, and Lactivibrio were decreased in RE patients than the controls.ConclusionsOur study suggested oral microbial dysbiosis in patients with RE, and identified bacterial species with potential biomarker significance. Further studies are required to understand role of oral microbial dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of RE.

Flavonoids impart color and mouthfeel to grapes and wine and are very sensitive to environmental conditions. Growth chamber experiments were performed to investigate the effect of temperature regimes and the differences between day/night temperatures on anthocyanins and flavonols in Merlot grapes. Among the regimes tested, the ones with diurnal 20°C determined the highest levels of anthocyanins and flavonols. Higher diurnal temperatures decreased those levels but increased the proportion of methoxylated and acylated species. When regimes with the same day temperature but different night temperatures were compared, differences between day/night temperatures did not affect anthocyanins, unless a difference of 25°C between day and night temperatures was imposed. When regimes with the same night temperature but different day temperatures were compared, the regime with higher day temperature had a lower anthocyanin level. No relationships were observed between the effects of temperature regimes on anthocyanin level and the expression of key anthocyanin genes. However, the effects on anthocyanin acylation level were consistent with the effects on the acyltransferase expression, and the effects on flavonol level were consistent with the effects on the expression of key flavonol genes. This study indicates that, in Merlot grapes, anthocyanins and flavonols are mostly sensitive to day temperatures.

Customized small batch orders and sustainable development requirements pose challenges for product quality control and manufacturing process optimization for steel production. Building a multi-quality objective process parameter optimization method that converts the original single target optimization into multi-objective interval capability optimization has become a new method to ensure product quality qualification rate and reduce production costs. Aiming at the multi-quality objective control problem of plate products, we proposed a novel multi-objective process parameter interval optimization model (MPPIO) with equipment process control capability and parameter sensitive analysis. The multi-output support vector regression method was used to establish a multi-quality objective prediction model, which was settled as a verification model for the process parameter optimization results based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). The process control capability functions of key parameters were fitted based on the real data in production. With these functions, each optimized particle of the classical PSO was converted into the particle beam of the MIPPO. The iteration process was weight controlled by calculating the Morris sensitivity between each input parameter and output index in the multi-quality objective prediction model, and finally the processing control window of each key parameter was determined according to the process parameter optimization results. The experimental results show that the MPPIO model can obtain the optimal parameter optimization results with the maximum processing capacity and meet the customized processing range requirements. The MPPIO model can reduce the difficulty of control and save production costs while ensuring the product properties is qualified.

BackgroundThe accurate assessment of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) is a challenge to most experienced clinicians. As a potential clinical tool, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) could detect residual awareness without the need for the patients’ actual motor responses.MethodsWe adopted a simple active fMRI motor paradigm (hand raising) to detect residual awareness in these patients. Twenty-nine patients were recruited. They met the diagnosis of minimally conscious state (MCS) (male = 6, female = 2; n = 8), vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) (male = 17, female = 4; n = 21).ResultsWe analyzed the command-following responses for robust evidence of statistically reliable markers of motor execution, similar to those found in 15 healthy controls. Of the 29 patients, four (two MCS, two VS/UWS) could adjust their brain activity to the “hand-raising” command, and they showed activation in motor-related regions (which could not be discovered in the own-name task).ConclusionLongitudinal behavioral assessments showed that, of these four patients, two in a VS/UWS recovered to MCS and one from MCS recovered to MCS+ (i.e., showed command following). In patients with no response to hand raising task, six VS/UWS and three MCS ones showed recovery in follow-up procedure. The simple active fMRI “hand-raising” task can elicit brain activation in patients with DOC, similar to those observed in healthy volunteers. Activity of the motor-related network may be taken as an indicator of high-level cognition that cannot be discerned through conventional behavioral assessment.

Due to the complex situation of disorder of consciousness (DOC) patients, the assessment of conscious states of these patients has become a huge challenge for a long time (Laureys et al., 2010). At present, the main clinical diagnostic method to assess the conscious state of a DOC patient is the use of a relevant behavior scale like the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R). In this article, we will focus on auditory stimulation and select some representative auditory stimulus, like calling names and music stimulation, to discuss the function and application of the auditory stimulus in patients with DOC and provide guidance for future research.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone that can mitigate heavy metal toxicity. Exogenous ABA and ABA mimic 1 (AM1) were applied to study the influence on Zn uptake and accumulation in Vitis vinifera L. cv. Merlot seedlings exposed to excess Zn. The seedlings were treated with either normal or excess levels of Zn in combination with applications of ABA and AM1. Excess Zn exposure resulted in decreased lateral root length, decreased photosynthesis, elevated uptake, and accumulation of Zn in roots, trunks, and stems, decreased jasmonic acid content in roots and leaves, and induced the expression of Zn transportation- and detoxification-related genes. Remarkably, in the presence of toxic amounts of Zn, the exogenous application of ABA, but not of AM1, reduced the uptake and accumulation of Zn in roots and induced higher expression of both ZIP genes and detoxification-related genes in root and leaf. These results indicate that exogenous ABA enhances the tolerance of grape seedlings to excess Zn and that AM1 is not a suitable ABA mimic compound for Zn stress alleviation in grapes.

Traditional mechanical properties prediction models are mostly based on experience and mechanism, which neglect the linear and nonlinear relationships between process parameters. Aiming at the high-dimensional data collected in the complex industrial process of steel production, a new prediction model is proposed. The multidimensional support vector regression (MSVR)-based model is combined with the feature selection method, which involves maximum information coefficient (MIC) correlation characterization and complex network clustering. Firstly, MIC is used to measure the correlation between process parameters and mechanical properties, based on which a complex network is constructed and hierarchical clustering is performed. Secondly, we evaluate all parameters and select a representative one for each partition as the input of the subsequent model based on the centrality and influence indicators. Finally, an actual steel production case is used to train the MSVR prediction model. The prediction results show that our proposed framework can capture effective features from the full parameters in terms of higher prediction accuracy and is less time-consuming compared with the Pearson-based subset, full-parameter subset, and empirical subset input. The feature selection method based on MIC can dig out some nonlinear relationships which cannot be found by Pearson coefficient.

It is highly desired yet challenging to strategically steer the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2ER) toward ethanol (EtOH) with high activity and selectivity. Although the grain boundary (GB) has been identified as an effective active site for C2 product formation, there is still no consensus on the mechanism governing its regulation. Moreover, the specific Cu species that plays a crucial catalytic role remains a source of debate. Herein, we report a type of Cu7Se4/CuSe nanosheets with rich GBs, which are conducive to the generation of abundant Cu+ species. Crucially, a clear correlation between Cu+ content and EtOH selectivity is obtained. The unique local charge distribution and electronic structure of Cu on GBs make it a real active site to promote EtOH production. This work elucidates the significant role of the chemical state of Cu in CO2ER toward EtOH, shedding light on the mechanistic insights of GBs serving as active sites for this process.
