Recently, light use efficiency (LUE) models driven by remote sensing data have been widely employed to estimate the gross primary productivity (GPP) of different terrestrial ecosystems at global or regional scales. Furthermore, the two-leaf light use efficiency (TL-LUE) model has been reported to improve the accuracy of GPP estimation, relative to the big-leaf MOD17 model, by separating the entire canopy into sunlit and shaded leaves through the use of constant clumping index estimation (Ω). However, ignoring obvious seasonal changes in the vegetation clumping index (CI) most likely results in GPP estimation errors since the CI tends to present seasonal changes, especially with respect to the obvious presence or absence of leaves within the canopy of deciduous vegetation. Here, we propose a TL-CLUE model that considers the seasonal difference in the CI based on the TL-LUE model to characterize general changes in canopy seasonality. This method composites monthly CI values into two or three Ω values to capture the general seasonal changes in CI while attempting to reduce the potential uncertainty caused during CI inversion. In theory, CI seasonality plays an essential role in the distribution of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by the canopy (APAR). Specifically, the seasonal difference in CI values mainly considers the state of leaf growth, which is determined by the MODIS land surface phenology (LSP) product (MCD12Q2). Therefore, the one-year cycle (OYC) of leaf life is divided into two (leaf-off and leaf-on) or three seasons (leaf-off, leaf-scattering, and leaf-gathering) according to this MODIS LSP product, and the mean CI of each corresponding season for each vegetation class is computed to smoothen the uncertainties within each seasonal section. With these two or three seasonal Ω values as inputs, the TL-CLUE model by which the seasonal differences in CI are incorporated into the TL-LUE model is run and evaluated based on observations from 84 eddy covariance (EC) tower sites across North America. The results of the analysis reveal that the TL-LUE model widely overestimates GPP for most vegetation types during the leaf-on season, particularly during the growth peak. Although the TL-LUE model shows that the temporal characteristics of GPP agree with the EC observations in terms of general trends, the TL-CLUE model further improves the accuracy of GPP estimation by considering the seasonal changes in the CI. The result of GPP estimation from the TL-CLUE model shows a lower error (RMSE = 2.46 g C m−2 d−1) than the TL-LUE model (RMSE = 2.75 g C m−2 d−1) and somewhat decreases the eight-day GPP overestimation in the TL-LUE model with a constant Ω by approximately 9.76 and 8.970% when adapting three and two Ωs from different seasons, respectively. The study demonstrates that the uncertainty of seasonal disturbance in the CI, quantified by a standard deviation of approximately 0.071 relative to the mean CI of 0.746, is diminished through simple averaging. The seasonal difference in CI should be considered in GPP estimation of terrestrial ecosystems, particularly for vegetation with obvious canopy changes, where leaves go through the complete physiological processes of germination, stretching, maturity, and falling within a year. This study demonstrates the potential of the MODIS CI application in developing ecosystem and hydrological models.

The clumping index (CI) quantifies the foliage grouping within distinct canopies relative to randomly distributed canopies, which plays an important role in the vegetation radiative regime. Among the vegetation structure parameters, the global CI map can be retrieved by using multiangle remote sensing observations. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF)/Albedo product (MCD43) of the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is the crucial input data of the global CI product, which provides validated spatiotemporal continuous directional reflectance data. To determine the impacts of updating the MCD43 product on the consistency and performance of global CI products, CIs retrieved from different MCD43 versions (Collection V005/V006, C5/6) were compared on a global scale and validated with field-measured CI data. The results showed that the global and seasonal comparisons of C5 and C6 CI data are generally consistent. Compared to C5 CI data, C6 CI data have improved quality with more main algorithm retrievals and fewer case of missing data. The comparisons over the field measurements indicate that both versions of CI data agree with field-measured CI data in terms of values and seasonal variations, while C6 CI data (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 0.05, bias = 0.02) are closer to field CIs than C5 CI data (R2 = 0.80, RMSE = 0.07, bias = 0.03), indicating a higher accuracy for C6 CI data. The monthly CI is recommended for characterizing the overall seasonal patterns of surface CIs.

Surface albedo plays a controlling role in the surface energy budget, and albedo-induced radiative forcing has a significant impact on climate and environmental change (e.g., global warming, snow and ice melt, soil and vegetation degradation, and urban heat islands (UHIs)). Several existing review papers have summarized the algorithms and products of surface albedo as well as climate feedback at certain surfaces, while an overall understanding of various land types remains insufficient, especially with increasing studies on albedo management methods regarding mitigating global warming in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review on the variance pattern of surface albedo, the subsequent climate impact, and albedo management strategies. The results show that using the more specific term “surface albedo” is recommended instead of “albedo” to avoid confusion with similar terms (e.g., planetary albedo), and spatiotemporal changes in surface albedo can indicate subtle changes in the energy budget, land cover, and even the specific surface structure. In addition, the close relationships between surface albedo change and climate feedback emphasize the important role of albedo in climate simulation and forecasting, and many albedo management strategies (e.g., the use of retroreflective materials (RRMs)) have been demonstrated to be effective for climate mitigation by offsetting CO2 emissions. In future work, climate effects and management strategies regarding surface albedo at a multitude of spatiotemporal resolutions need to be systematically evaluated to promote its application in climate mitigation, where a life cycle assessment (LCA) method considering both climate benefits and side effects (e.g., thermal comfort) should be followed.

Canopy structure parameters (e.g., leaf area index (LAI)) are key variables of most climate and ecology models. Currently, satellite-observed reflectances at a few viewing angles are often directly used for vegetation structure parameter retrieval; therefore, the information content of multi-angular observations that are sensitive to canopy structure in theory cannot be sufficiently considered. In this study, we proposed a novel method to retrieve LAI based on modelled multi-angular reflectances at sufficient sun-viewing geometries, by linking the PROSAIL model with a kernel-driven Ross-Li bi-directional reflectance function (BRDF) model using the MODIS BRDF parameter product. First, BRDF sensitivity to the PROSAIL input parameters was investigated to reduce the insensitive parameters. Then, MODIS BRDF parameters were used to model sufficient multi-angular reflectances. By comparing these reference MODIS reflectances with simulated PROSAIL reflectances within the range of the sensitive input parameters in the same geometries, the optimal vegetation parameters were determined by searching the minimum discrepancies between them. In addition, a significantly linear relationship between the average leaf angle (ALA) and the coefficient of the volumetric scattering kernel of the Ross-Li model in the near-infrared band was built, which can narrow the search scope of the ALA and accelerate the retrieval. In the validation, the proposed method attains a higher consistency (root mean square error (RMSE) = 1.13, bias = −0.19, and relative RMSE (RRMSE) = 36.8%) with field-measured LAIs and 30-m LAI maps for crops than that obtained with the MODIS LAI product. The results indicate the vegetation inversion potential of sufficient multi-angular data and the ALA relationship, and this method presents promise for large-scale LAI estimation.

Recently, much attention has been given to using geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) meteorological satellite data for retrieving land surface parameters due to their high observation frequencies. However, their bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) information content with a single viewing angle has not been sufficiently investigated, which lays a foundation for subsequent quantitative estimation. In this study, we aim to comprehensively evaluate BRDF information from time-series observations from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the GEO satellite Himawari-8. First, ~6.2 km monthly multiangle surface reflectances from POLDER onboard a low-Earth-orbiting (LEO) satellite with good angle distributions over various land types during 2008 were used as reference data, and corresponding 0.05° high-quality MODIS (i.e., onboard LEO satellites) and AHI datasets during four months in 2020 were obtained using cloud and aerosol property products. Then, indicators of angle distribution, BRDF change, and albedos were retrieved by the kernel-driven Ross-Li BRDF model from the three datasets, which were used for comparisons over different time spans. Generally, the quality of sun-viewing geometries varies dramatically for accumulated AHI observations according to the weight-of-determination, and wide-ranging anisotropic flat indices are obtained. The root-mean-square-errors of white sky albedos between AHI and MODIS half-month data are 0.018 and 0.033 in the red and near-infrared bands, respectively, achieving smaller values of 0.004 and 0.007 between the half-month and daily AHI data, respectively, due to small variances in sun-viewing geometries. The generally wide AHI BRDF variances and good consistency in albedo with MODIS show their potential for retrieving anisotropy information and albedo, while angle accumulation quality of AHI time-series observations must be considered.

Clumping index (CI) is a canopy structural variable important for modeling the terrestrial biosphere, but its retrieval from remote sensing data remains one of the least reliable. The majority of regional or global CI products available so far were generated from multiangle optical reflectance data. However, these reflectance-based estimates have well-known limitations, such as the mere use of a linear relationship between the normalized difference hotspot and darkspot (NDHD) and CI, uncertainties in bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models used to calculate the NDHD, and coarse spatial resolutions (e.g., hundreds of meters to several kilometers). To remedy these limitations and develop alternative methods for large-scale CI mapping, here we explored the use of spaceborne lidar—the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS)—and proposed a semi-physical algorithm to estimate CI at the footprint level. Our algorithm was formulated to leverage the full vertical canopy profile information of the GLAS full-waveform data; it converted raw waveforms to forest canopy gap distributions and gap fractions of random canopies, which was used to estimate CI based on the radiative transfer theory and a revised Beer–Lambert model. We tested our algorithm over two areas in China—the Saihanba National Forest Park and Heilongjiang Province—and assessed its relative accuracies against field-measured CI and MODIS CI products. We found that reliable estimation of CI was possible only for GLAS waveforms with high signal-to-noise ratios (e.g., >65) and at gentle slopes (e.g., 2 = 0.72, RMSE = 0.07, and bias = 0.02), but they showed less correlation to MODIS CI (e.g., R2 = 0.26, RMSE = 0.12, and bias = 0.04). The difference highlights the impact of the scale effect in conducting comparisons of products with huge differences resolution. Overall, our analyses represent the first attempt to use spaceborne lidar to retrieve high-resolution forest CI and our algorithm holds promise for mapping CI globally.
