As part of a long-term experiment to determine the impacts of composted manure and straw amendments (replacing 50% of chemical fertilizer with composted pig manure, wheat straw return combined with chemical fertilizer, and setting no fertilizer and chemical fertilizer-only as controls) on rice-associated weeds in a rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system, species richness, abundance, density, and biomass of weeds were assessed during years 8 and 9. Fertilization decreased the species richness and total density of rice-associated weeds but increased their total biomass. The species richness and densities of broadleaf and sedge weeds decreased with fertilization, while species richness of grass weeds increased only with straw return and density was not significantly affected. The shoot biomass per square meter of grass and broadleaf weeds was significantly higher with fertilization treatments than with the no-fertilizer control, while that of sedge weeds declined with fertilizer application. With fertilization, the densities of monarch redstem (Ammannia baccifera L.) and smallflower umbrella sedge (Cyperus difformis L.) decreased, that of Chinese sprangletop [Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees] increased, and those of barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] and monochoria [Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f.) C. Presl ex Kunth] were not significantly affected. Ammannia baccifera was the most abundant weed species in all treatments. Whereas composted pig manure plus fertilizer resulted in higher density of A. baccifera and lower shoot biomass per plant than chemical fertilizer only, wheat straw return plus chemical fertilizer caused lower density and shoot biomass of A. baccifera. Therefore, it may be possible that fertilization strategies that suppress specific weeds could be used as improved weed management program components in rice production systems.

Phosphofructokinase B (PfkB) belongs to the ribokinase family, which uses the phosphorylated sugar as substrate, and catalyzes fructose-6-phosphate into fructose-1,6-diphosphate. However, the structural basis of Mycobacterium marinum PfkB is not clear. Here, we found that the PfkB protein was monomeric in solution, which was different from most enzymes in this family. The crystal structure of PfkB protein from M. marinum was solved at a resolution of 2.21 A. The PfkB structure consists of two domains, a major three-layered α/β/α sandwich-like domain characteristic of the ribokinase-like superfamily, and a second domain composed of four-stranded β sheets. Structural comparison analysis suggested that residues G236, A237, G238, and D239 could be critical for ATP catalysis and substrate binding of PfkB. Our current work provides new insights into understanding the mechanism of the glycolysis in M. marinum.

Objectives Gatifloxacin (GAT), as one of the representatives of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) has been used to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis. Although DNA gyrase mutations are the leading cause of FQs resistance, mutations conferring resistance to GAT remain inadequately characterized. Methods In the present study, GAT-resistant mutants were selected from 7H10 agar plates containing 0.5 mg/L GAT (the critical concentration). Mutations involved in GAT resistance were identified through whole-genome sequence. Results A total of 123 isolates were demonstrated to resistance to GAT. Among those isolates, 55.3% (68/123) mutants had gyrA gene mutations (G280A (D94N), A281G (D94G), G280T (D94Y) and G262T (G88C)). The remain (44.7%, 55/123) harbored gyrB gene mutations (A1495G (N499D), C1497A (N499K), C1497G (N499K) and A1503C (E501D)). Conclusions In summary, mutations in gyrA and gyrB are the primary mechanism of GAT resistance. The findings provides new insight of resistance to GAT and contribute to molecular diagnosis of GAT resistance in the clinical setting.

There has been a worldwide interest to develop a supersonic business jet (SSBJ) for a minimum range of 4000 nm with low sonic boom intensity and high fuel efficiency. An SSBJ design model is developed in the GENUS aircraft conceptual design environment. With the design model, a low-boom low-drag SSBJ concept is designed and optimized. This article studies the design concept for its operational performances. The sustained supersonic cruise flight is studied to find out the fuel-efficient Mach number and altitude combinations. The combined supersonic and subsonic cruise flight scenarios are studied to evaluate the feasibility of boom-free flight routes. The one-stop supersonic cruise flight scenario is studied to compare the fuel consumption and time advantage over subsonic airliners. The off-design sonic boom intensity is studied to explore the operational space assuming there would be a sonic boom intensity limit in the future. Through the studies, it is revealed that there is a corresponding most fuel-efficient operating altitude for a specific cruise Mach number. To operate the aircraft near the cutoff Mach number leads to both increases in the fuel consumption (6.3%–8.1%) and the mission time (11.7%–13.1%). The business-class supersonic transport (231 g/PAX/km) consumes nearly three times fuel as the economic-class supersonic transport (77 g/PAX/km), which is still far more than the economic-class subsonic transport (20 g/PAX/km). Off-design sonic boom intensity studies reveal different trends against the common understanding: the sonic boom intensity does not necessarily decrease as the altitude increases; the sonic boom intensity does not necessarily decrease as the Mach number decreases.

Aiming at the path planning and decision-making problem, multi-automated guided vehicles (AGVs) have played an increasingly important role in the multi-stage industries, e.g., textile spinning. We recast a framework to investigate the improved genetic algorithm (GA) on multi-AGV path optimization within spinning drawing frames to solve the complex multi-AGV maneuvering scheduling decision and path planning problem. The study reported in this paper simplifies the scheduling model to meet the drawing workshop's real-time application requirements. According to the characteristics of decision variables, the model divides into two decision variables: time-independent variables and time-dependent variables. The first step is to use a GA to solve the AGV resource allocation problem based on the AGV resource pool strategy and specify the sliver can's transportation task. The second step is to determine the AGV transportation scheduling problem based on the sliver can-AGV matching information obtained in the first step. One significant advantage of the presented approach is that the fitness function is calculated based on the machine selection strategy, AGV resource pool strategy, and the process constraints, determining the scheduling sequence of the AGVs to deliver can. Moreover, it discovered that double-path decision-making constraints minimize the total path distance of all AGVs, and minimizing single-path distances of each AGVs exerted. By using the improved GA, simulation results show that the total path distance was shortened.

This study examines earnings management (EM) at target firms before and after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 (SOX) was implemented and explains the post-merger underperformance of the acquirers. Using a sample of US listed firms that are targets of successful acquisitions over the period 1987–2017, we find evidence of real and accrual EM in the eight quarters leading up to the date when the merger is announced. Through a careful examination of the two forms of EM, we find that the target firms manage real activities both before and after SOX went into effect. However, accrual EM is significant among target firms in stock-based acquisitions before SOX took effect. The findings further suggest that the target firms’ pre-merger EM is negatively associated with the short-term returns of the targets and the long-run performance of the acquirers. More specifically, we find that target firms’ pre-merger real EM is a significant determinant of the acquirers’ negative long-run performance. Our results are robust after controlling for acquirers’ EM, deal-level, and firm-level characteristics.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a type of endogenous non-coding RNA that were discovered to regulate gene expression through multiple pathways. Metastasis remains one of the biggest obstacles in cancer treatment. In this review, we focus on circRNAs involved in cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis. We present recently identified tumor-related circRNAs and discuss their functioning in tumor progression and metastasis. These circRNAs are categorized into different functional mechanisms, including microRNA (miRNA) sponging, protein binding, regulation of host genes, translation of circRNAs, and exosomal circRNAs. Additionally, the indirect functions of circRNAs that regulate epithelial-mesenchymal transition and autophagy are also discussed., Graphical Abstract, Large numbers of differentially expressed circRNAs have been identified in tumors and metastasis. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches have been developed to manipulate specific circRNA expression in order to modulate tumor development. circRNAs may be used as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis and may be targets for therapeutic strategies.

A study was conducted to identify whether composted manure and straw amendments (replacement of a portion of chemical fertilizer [50% of the total nitrogen application] with composted pig manure, and straw return [all straw from the previous rice crop] combined with chemical fertilizer) compared with no fertilization and chemical fertilizer only would change the dominant species of wheat-associated weeds as well as influence their growth and seed yield in a rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system. The study was initiated in 2010, and the treatment effects on the species, density, plant height, shoot biomass, seed yield of dominant weeds, and wheat yields were assessed in 2017 and 2018. Fertilization significantly increased the height, density, and yield of wheat, as well as the shoot biomass of wheat-associated weeds, but decreased the weed species number. A total of 17 and 14 weed species were recorded in the experimental wheat fields in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The most dominant weed species were American sloughgrass [Beckmannia syzigachne (Steud.) Fernald] and catchweed bedstraw (Galium aparine L.), which made up more than 64% of the weed community in all treatments. When the chemical fertilizer application was amended with pig manure compost and straw return, the relative abundance of B. syzigachne significantly decreased, while the relative abundance of G. aparine significantly increased. The application of the chemical fertilizer-only treatment resulted in increases in the density, shoot biomass, and seed yield of B. syzigachne, while the composted manure and straw amendments applied together with chemical fertilizer led to significant increases in the density, shoot biomass, and seed yield of G. aparine. Consequently, further research on ways to promote greater cropping system diversity will be needed to prevent the selection of weed species that are adapted to a limited suite of crop management practices.

This paper introduces a supersonic transport aircraft design model developed in the GENUS aircraft conceptual design environment. A conceptual design model appropriate to supersonic transports with low-to-medium-fidelity methods are developed in GENUS. With this model, the authors reveal the relationship between the sonic boom signature and the lift and volume distributions and the possibility to optimise the lift distribution and volume distribution together so that they can cancel each other at some region. A new inspiring design concept—sonic boom stealth is proposed by the authors. The sonic boom stealth concept is expected to inspire the supersonic aircraft designers to design low-boom concepts through aircraft shaping and to achieve low ground impacts. A family of different classes of supersonic aircraft, including a single-seat supersonic demonstrator (0.47 psf), a 10-passenger supersonic business jet (0.90 psf) and a 50-seat supersonic airliner (1.02 psf), are designed to demonstrate the sonic boom stealth design principles. Although, there are challenges to balance the volume with packaging and control requirements, these concepts prove the feasibility of low-boom low-drag design for supersonic transports from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Path planning is a hot topic at present. Considering the global and local path planning of mobile robot is one of the challenging research topics. The objective of this paper is to create a rasterized environment that optimizes the planning of multiple paths and solves barrier avoidance issues. Combining the A* algorithm with the dynamic window method, a robo-assisted random barrier avoidance method is used to resolve the issues caused by collisions and path failures. Improving the A* algorithm requires analyzing and optimizing its evaluation function to increase search efficiency. The redundant point removal strategy is then presented. The dynamic window method is utilized for local planning between each pair of adjacent nodes. This method guarantees that random obstacles are avoided in real-time based on the globally optimal path. The experiment demonstrates that the enhanced A* algorithm reduces the average path length and computation time when compared to the traditional A* algorithm. After fusing the dynamic window method, the local path is corrected using the global path, and the resolution for random barrier avoidance is visualized.

This paper evaluates six supersonic business jet (SSBJ) concepts in a multidisciplinary design analysis optimisation (MDAO) environment in terms of their aerodynamics and sonic boom intensities. The aerodynamic analysis and sonic boom prediction are investigated by a number of conceptual-level numerical approaches. The panel method PANAIR is integrated to perform automated aerodynamic analysis. The drag coefficient is corrected by the Harris wave drag formula and form factor method. For sonic boom prediction, the near-field pressure is predicted through the Whitham F-function method. The F-function is decomposed to the F-function due to volume and the F-function due to lift to investigate the separate effect on sonic boom. The propagation method for the near-field signature in a stratified windy atmosphere is the waveform parameter method. In this research, using the methods described and publically available data on the concepts, the supersonic drag elements and sonic boom signature due to volume distribution and lift distribution are analysed. Based on the analysis, low-boom and low-drag design principles are identified.

In a rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) rotation system, a study was conducted to determine the effects of different fertilization regimens (no fertilization, replacement of a portion of chemical fertilizer with composted pig manure, chemical fertilizer only, and straw return combined with chemical fertilizer) on the weed communities and wheat yields after 4 and 5 yr. The impact of the long-term recurrent fertilization regimen initiated in 2010 on the composition and diversity of weed communities and the impact of the components and total amount of fertilizer on wheat yields were assessed in 2014 and 2015. Totals of 19 and 16 weed species were identified in experimental wheat fields in 2014 and 2015, respectively, but the occurrence of weed species varied according to the fertilization regimen. American sloughgrass [Beckmannia syzigachne(Steud.) Fernald], water starwort [Myosoton aquaticum(L.) Moench], and lyrate hemistepta (Hemistepta lyrataBunge.) were adapted to all fertilization treatments and were the dominant weed species in the experimental wheat fields. The greatest number of weed species were observed under the no-fertilization treatment, in which 40% of the weed community was composed of broadleaf weeds and the lowest wheat yields were obtained. With fertilizer application, the number of weed species was reduced, the height of weeds increased significantly, the density of broadleaf weeds was significantly reduced, the biodiversity indices of weed communities decreased significantly, and higher wheat yields were obtained. Only the chemical fertilizer plus composted pig manure treatment and the chemical fertilizer–only treatment increased the density of grassy weeds and the total weed community density. The treatment with chemical fertilizer only also resulted in the highest density ofB. syzigachne. Rice straw return combined with chemical fertilizer yielded the lowest total weed density, which suggests that it inhibited occurrence of weeds. The different fertilizer regimens not only affected the weed species composition, distribution, and diversity, but also the weed density. Our study provides new information from a rice–wheat rotation system on the relationship between soil amendments and agricultural weed infestation.

Using the renaming of companies in the Chinese market, where managers are more likely to take advantage of cosmetic effects in an attempt to influence investors, we find that, during the announcement period, the stock price and trading activities both react positively to renaming, especially when it is for image improvement reasons. However, in the long run, renaming has negative BHARs (buy and hold abnormal returns). Over time, the market and investors overreact less to renaming. Companies with problematic financial performance and negative media coverage are more inclined to change their name. We offer new and more detailed evidence to support the rational pricing hypothesis, rather than the investor mania hypothesis.

Microplastics become one of the serious persistent pollutants in terrestrial environments, and thus may represent a threat to the quality of soil and inhabiting organisms. It is imperative to understand occurrence and distribution of microplastics in soils. In this study, a large-scale field survey encompassing 85 locations along the lower reaches of Yangtze River and estuary was performed to investigate the microplastics abundance in agricultural soils. Microplastics were isolated from all the samples and all depths (0–80 cm). The microplastics abundance in soils ranged from 4.94 items/kg to 252.70 items/kg, with an average of 37.32 items/kg. The most common microplastic type detected was Polypropylene (PP) occurring as white fragments with sizes ranging from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. Abiotic parameters such as soil pH and texture were the general factors being associated with microplastic abundance. Meantime, traffic was indicated as one important factor to affect the microplastic abundance. Overall, the road input seems to be the main source of microplastic pollution in agricultural areas along the Yangtze River and estuary. Further studies should elucidate the original of the plastic fragments in order to establish a baseline for regulative initiatives securing environmental protection.

In order to study the internal flow characteristics and external droplet velocity distribution characteristics of the swirl nozzle, the following methods were used: numerical simulations were used to study the internal flow characteristics of a swirl nozzle and phase Doppler particle velocimetry was used to determine the corresponding external droplet velocity distribution under medium and low pressure conditions. The distributions of pressure and water velocity inside the nozzle were obtained. Meanwhile, the velocities of droplets outside the nozzle in different sections were discussed. The results show that the flow rate in the swirl nozzle increases with the increase in inlet pressure, and the local pressure in the region decreases because of the excessive velocity at the internal outlet section of the swirl nozzle, resulting in cavitation. The experimental results show that under an external flow field, the minimum droplet velocity occurs in the axial direction; starting from the axis, the velocity first increases and then decreases along the radial direction. Swirling motion inside the nozzle and velocity variations in the external flow field occur under medium and low pressure conditions. The relationship between the inlet pressure and the distributions of water droplets’ velocities was established, which provides a reference for the research and development of the swirl nozzle.

A family of different classes supersonic aircraft are designed with similar general layout, including a single seat supersonic demonstrator, a 10-passenger supersonic business jet and a 50-seat supersonic airliner. These concepts prove the feasibility of low-boom low-drag supersonic transport designs in a multidisciplinary perspective. There are some challenges to balance the volume with packaging and control requirements. The low-boom design for configuration with nacelles are also very challenging.

This paper introduces the E-19 AEOLUS supersonic business jet designed by the authors (conceptual design) and a team of Staff and a team of graduate students (preliminary and detail design) from the Aerospace Vehicle Design MSc. The design is presented at the 50th anniversary of the first flight of Concorde and with growing interest from many aircraft design companies. An attractive design would still need the usual attributes of safety, security, comfort, reliability, performance and operational flexibility. This paper presents a design that attempts to address these issues. The details of cabin, structures, landing gear, systems, powerplants, etc. are designed. Low-boom low-drag technologies are applied to the design. The synthetic vision display and double drooping nose are introduced to increase the pilot’s field of view. The resulting concept is challenging but could result in an aircraft well suited to meet a new market opportunity
