Abstract Background Considering that changes in the choroidal thickness are closely related to ocular growth, we studied the choroidal thickness (CT) and the blood flow features in children with unilateral myopic anisometropia (UMA) as well as investigating the relationship between choroidal changes and myopia. Methods Subjective refractive, axial length (AL), and biometric parameters were measured in 98 UMA children (age: 8–15 years). CT and choroidal blood-flow features, including the choroidal vessel volume (CVV), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), and choriocapillaris perfusion area (CCPA), were measured through swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. The macular region was categorized into four concentric circles of diameters 0–1 mm (central fovea), 1–3 mm (parafovea), 3–6 mm (perifovea), and 6–9 mm (extended), and further categorized into superior (S), inferior (I), temporal (T), and nasal (N) quadrants. Results The aforementioned four regions of myopic eyes displayed significantly lower CT, CVV, and CVI than those of non-myopic eyes. CCPA changes differed across different regions of both the eyes (parts of N and T quadrants). There was an inverse association between CT and the interocular AL difference (central and other regions S, T quadrant). No correlation was noted between CVV and CVI with interocular AL difference. Once thought to be non-naturally occurring, D-amino acids (DAAs) have in recent years been revealed to play a wide range of physiological roles across the tree of life, including in human systems. Synthetic biologists have since exploited DAAs’ unique biophysical properties to generate peptides and proteins with novel or enhanced functions. However, while peptides and small proteins containing DAAs can be efficiently prepared in vitro, producing large-sized heterochiral proteins poses as a major challenge mainly due to absence of pre-existing DAA translational machinery and presence of endogenous chiral discriminators. Based on our previous work demonstrating pyrrolysyl-tRNA synthetase’s (PylRS’) remarkable substrate polyspecificity, this work attempts to increase PylRS’ ability in directly charging tRNAPyl with D-phenylalanine analogs (DFAs). We here report a novel, polyspecific Methanosarcina mazei PylRS mutant, DFRS2, capable of incorporating DFAs into proteins via ribosomal synthesis in vivo. To validate its utility, in vivo translational DAA substitution were performed in superfolder green fluorescent protein and human heavy chain ferritin, successfully altering both proteins’ physiochemical properties. Furthermore, aminoacylation kinetic assays further demonstrated aminoacylation of DFAs by DFRS2 in vitro.

Abstract In response to the growing interest in offshore wind energy development in California, the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management delineated three Call Areas for potential leasing. This study provides a comprehensive characterization and comparison of offshore wind power potential within the two Central California Call Areas (Diablo Canyon and Morro Bay) using 12‐ and 15‐MW turbines under different inter‐turbine spacing and wind farm size scenarios. Our analysis shows similar daily and seasonal patterns of wind power produced within the Call Areas, which peak in spring and during evening hours. Per‐turbine power production is higher in the Morro Bay Call Area due to slightly higher hub‐height wind speeds, whereas total power production is higher in the Diablo Canyon Call Area due to its larger size. Turbine type had a negligible impact on average power production per‐unit‐area because while larger turbines produce more power, they require greater inter‐turbine spacing. Combined power production from the two fully built out Call Areas could equal nearly a quarter of California's current annual electrical energy production. A commercial‐scale wind farm with a realized power output of 960 MW would require a footprint of at least half of the Morro Bay Call Area or at least a quarter of the Diablo Canyon Call Area. These results provide guidance on offshore wind development over the Central California Coast, and the framework demonstrated here could be applied to other wind data sets in other regions.

The falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs) have previously been shown to contribute substantially to reduced discrepancies in simulations of present-day climatology of radiation, skin temperatures and sea ice concentration and thickness over the Southern Ocean. This study extends to examine the impacts of FIREs on simulation of sea ice changes under a scenario of gradual increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. We perform a pair of sensitivity experiments including (CESM1-SoN) and excluding (CESM1-NoS) FIREs using Community Earth System Model version 1. The differences in the annual and seasonal means between the initial and warmer periods are examined. Relative to CESM1-SoN, CESM1-NoS simulates more surface reflected shortwave and less downward longwave radiative warming, as well as colder surface temperature, resulting in larger annual-mean sea ice extent and thickness and slower seasonal and long-term sea ice melting and thinning. Over the Southern Ocean of CESM1-SoN, reduced downwelling longwave radiation in austral winter (June-July-August: JJA) leads to sea-ice growth with colder skin temperature while reduced net radiation resulting from increased shortwave reflection in austral summer reduces the melting of sea ice with little change in skin temperature. CESM1-NoS shows seasonal and long-term trends similar to those in CMIP5 models that exclude FIREs, hinting slower future warming-driven changes and larger amplitude of the annual cycle in sea ice concentration and thickness. The ice-free Southern Ocean in peak melting season is simulated at approximately year 130 for CESM1-NoS but year 100 for CESM1-SoN, about 30 years later than that of the Arctic.

This study compares radiation-circulation coupling over tropical and subtropical oceans by examining ice water path, radiation, low-level wind, and precipitation fields from the uncoupled prescribed sea surface temperature AMIP6 and the fullycoupled CMIP6 historical runs. Ice water path of the CMIP6 ensemble shows a closer agreement than the AMP6 ensemble, particularly in the subtropics. The inclusion of falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs), in general, improves simulation of radiation, low-level wind, and precipitation fields over the northwest Pacific, Southeast Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), equatorial eastern Pacific and Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). When both AMIP6 and CMIP6 models are divided into two groups with inclusion and exclusion of FIREs, the impact of FIREs is most pronounced in ITCZ and the subtropical trade-wind regions in CMIP6 but over the tropical Pacific and SPCZ in AMIP6. This suggests that active ocean plays a significant role in radiation-circulation coupling. The CMIP6 models with FIREs have less over-estimated biases in upward longwave radiation over the convective zones in Pacific and Atlantic and less low-level divergence of anomalous flows over convective zones, i.e., stronger trade winds. The circulation changes stronger in CMIP6 over the trade wind regions than in AMIP6, which suggests that the role of active ocean is important in testing an improved physical process in models. This conclusion is also supported by more systematic improvements in groups of models with inclusion of FIREs in CMIP6 than in AMIP6, hinting the important roles of FIREs in radiationcirculation coupling.

SARS-CoV-2 has spread rapidly, causing deaths worldwide. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the BD MAX Open System module for identifying viral pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, in nasopharyngeal specimens from individuals with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection. We developed and validated a rapid total nucleic acid extraction method based on real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the reliable, high-throughput simultaneous detection of common cold viral pathogens using the BD MAX Platform. The system was evaluated using 205 nasopharyngeal swab clinical samples. For assessment of the limit of detection (LoD), we used SARS-CoV-2, influenza A/B, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) RNA standards. The BD MAX dual multiplex real-time RT-PCR panel demonstrated a sensitivity comparable to that of the World Health Organization-recommended SARS-CoV-2 assay with an LoD of 50 copies/PCR. The LoD of influenza A/B and RSV was 100–200 copies/PCR. The overall percent agreement between the BD MAX panel and laboratory-developed RT-PCR test on 55 SARS-CoV-2-positive clinical samples was 100%. Among the 55 positive cases of COVID-19 analysed, no coinfection was detected. The BD MAX rapid multiplex PCR provides a highly sensitive, robust, and accurate assay for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A/B, and RSV.

Most global climate models, such as CMIP5 models, ignore the falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs). Extended from our previous works, we explore the impacts of FIREs on the geographical distribution changes of sea ice concentration (SIC), sea ice thickness and skin temperature (Ts) under 1% per year increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. We perform a pair of 140-year experiments including FIREs (SoN) and excluding FIREs (NoS) using CESM1-CAM5. These two simulations are compared with each other and against CMIP5 multi-model mean without FIREs (CMIP5-NoS). The results show that the changes of SIC, thickness and radiation fields in NoS minus SoN largely match the changes between CMIP5-NoS and SoN in winter but less so in summer and annual mean. Both NoS and CMIP5-NoS simulate less downward longwave and net radiative warming (~20 - 30 W m-2), resulting in colder Ts over Arctic and adjacent lands (~5 - 8 K colder) and stronger meridional temperature gradient, leading to more SIC and thicker sea ice (~30 - 40 cm) over the Arctic ocean. The inclusion of FIREs produces stronger changes in geographic patterns and magnitudes of Ts, SIC and thickness from the first to middle 20 years but less from the middle to last 20 years. The SIC and thickness changes in SoN are associated with warmer Ts, increasing downward surface longwave warming and thus net warming relative to NoS and CMIP5-NoS. With FIREs, the model shows faster warming-driven sea ice retreats and thinning over the entire Arctic ocean, resulting in a sea ice-free Arctic ocean 30 years earlier, as well as much warmer Ts (up to 5 K) over the adjacent lands than in NoS case.

This study reports the application of expanding genetic codes in developing protein cage-based delivery systems. The evolved Methanosarcina mazei pyrrolysyl-tRNA synthetase (PylRS)•tRNAPyl pairs derived from directed evolution are examined to probe their recognition for para-substituted phenylalanine analogs. The evolved MmPylRS, AzFRS, harboring a wide range of substrates, is further engineered at the C-terminal region into another variant, AzFRS-MS. AzFRS-MS shows suppression of the elevated sfGFP protein amount up to 10 TAG stop codons when charging p-azido-l-phenylalanine (AzF, 4), which allows the occurrence of click chemistry. Since protein nanocages used as drug delivery systems that encompass multiple drugs through a site-specific loading approach remain largely unexplored, as a proof of concept, the application of AzFRS-MS for the site-specific incorporation of AzF on human heavy chain ferritin (Ftn) is developed. The Ftn-4 conjugate is shown to be able to load multiple fluorescence dyes or a therapeutic agent, doxorubicin (Dox), through the strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) click reaction. Aiming to selectively target Her2+ breast cancer cells, Ftn-4-DOX conjugates fused with a HER2 receptor recognition peptide, anti-Her2/neu peptide (AHNP), is developed and demonstrated to be able to deliver Dox into the cell and to prolong the drug release. This work presents another application of evolved MmPylRS systems, whose potential in developing a variety of protein conjugates is noteworthy.

AIM: To investigate the changes of ocular surface and tear film before and after double eyelid operation with incision method.METHODS: Ocular surface disease index questionnaire survey, S I t, break-up time of tear film(BUT), corneal fluorescein staining, tear fern test(TFT)and conjunctive impression cytology were examined at 17 patients(34 eyes)to evaluate function of ocular surface and tear film before and after the double eyelid operation with incision method.RESULTS: There was significant difference in ocular surface disease index questionnaire survey scores before and after surgery(PP=0.008). The corneal epithelial staining spots increased within one day postoperatively. There was significant difference in S I t result before and after surgery(PPP>0.05).CONCLUSION:In the early stage after surgery, patients showed obvious discomfort and irritation symptoms, and the corneal and conjunctival epithelium was slightly damaged. With the reconstruction of the ocular surface microenvironment and removal of sutures, all test results recovered to the preoperative level.

In recent years, a variety of double protein dairy products have appeared on the market. It is a dairy product made by replacing parts of animal protein with plant protein and then using certain production methods. For some countries with limited milk resources, insufficient protein intake and low income, double protein dairy products have a bright future. More and more studies have found that double protein dairy products have combined effects which can alleviate the relatively poor functional properties of plant protein, including solubility, foaming, emulsifying and gelling. In addition, the taste of plant protein has been improved. This review focuses on the current state of research on double protein dairy products. It covers some salient features in the science and technology of plant proteins and suggests strategies for improving their use in various food applications. At the same time, it is expected that the fermentation methods used for those traditional dairy products as well as other processing technologies could be applied to produce novelty foods based on plant proteins.

Coronavirus disease 2019 has become a worldwide pandemic. By April 7, 2020, approximately 1,279,722 confirmed cases were reported worldwide including those in Asia, European Region, African Region and Region of the Americas. Rapid and accurate detection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is critical for patient care and implementing public health measures to control the spread of infection. In this study, we developed and validated a rapid total nucleic acid extraction method based on real‐time RT-PCR for reliable, high‐throughput identification of SARS-CoV-2 using the BD MAX platform. For clinical validation, 300 throat swab and 100 sputum clinical samples were examined by both the BD MAX platform and in-house real-time RT-PCR methods, which showed 100% concordant results. This BD MAX protocol is fully automated and the turnaround time from sample to results is approximately 2.5 h for 24 samples compared to 4.8 h by in-house real-time RT-PCR. Our developed BD MAX RT-PCR assay can accurately identify SARS-CoV-2 infection and shorten the turnaround time to increase the effectiveness of control and prevention measures for this emerging infectious disease.

Abstract Background Although substantial evidence supports a 20–30% risk reduction of colon cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer by physical activity (PA), the evidence for head and neck cancer (HNC) is limited. Three published studies on the association between PA and HNC have generated inconsistent results. The current study examined the association between recreational PA (RPA) and HNC risk with a more detailed assessment on the intensity, frequency, duration, and total years of RPA. Methods Data on RPA were collected from 623 HNC cases and 731 controls by in-person interview using a standardized questionnaire. The association between RPA and HNC risk was assessed using unconditional logistic regression, adjusted for sex, age, educational level, use of alcohol, betel quid, and cigarette, and consumption of vegetables and fruits. Results A significant inverse association between RPA and HNC risk was observed in a logistic regression model that adjusted for sex, age, and education (odds ratio (OR) = 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.51-0.82). However, after further adjustment for the use of alcohol, betel quid, and cigarette, and consumption of vegetables and fruits, RPA was no longer associated with HNC risk (OR =0.97, 95% CI: 0.73-1.28). No significant inverse association between RPA and HNC risk was observed in the analysis stratified by HNC sites or by the use of alcohol, betel quid, or cigarette. Conclusion Results from our study did not support an inverse association between RPA and HNC risk. The major focus of HNC prevention should be on cessation of cigarette smoking and betel chewing, reduction of alcohol drinking, and promotion of healthy diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Land skin temperature (Ts) is directly influenced by surface energy balance, in particular, radiative energy, which can be linked to model’s representation of radiative effects of hydrometeors in the atmosphere. This link is inferred by examining the changes of geographical distribution and seasonal cycle of surface radiation, surface turbulent fluxes and Ts between a pair of 140 years sensitivity experiments under 1% per year increase of atmospheric CO _2 . One is with radiative effects of falling ice (snow) hydrometeors on (SON) and the other off (NOS) using CESM1-CAM5 and the results are compared with CMIP5 models without these effects. For boreal winter, NOS relative to SON simulates less surface downward longwave and net flux (∼10–15 W m ^−2 ), resulting in colder Ts (∼2–3 K colder), over mid- and high latitudes, but more solar radiative flux, resulting in warmer Ts (∼1–3 K), over subtropical and tropical land. These differences between NOS and SON are amplified as the surface and the atmosphere become warmer. The results from CMIP5 ensemble generally match with those of NOS. Temporal correlation analysis indicates that the linkage between Ts and falling ice hydrometeor changes is through one between Ts and downward longwave and net fluxes at high latitudes, but strongly weakened by shortwave changes at low latitudes (and boreal summer). Relative to SON, land skin temperatures in NOS and CMIP5 are underestimated throughout the seasonal cycle but only slightly in summer.

The impacts of falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs) on simulated surface wind stress and sea surface temperature (SST) in Central Pacific El Niño (CP-El Niño) under a progressive warming climate are examined. Using controlled simulations with the CESM1 model, it is shown that the exclusion of FIREs (no snow: NOS) generates persistent westerly anomalies in surface wind stress relative to that with FIREs (snow on: SON). These anomalies subsequently lead to a weakening of the easterly trade winds associated with warmer SST anomalies in modeled life cycle. Results over three separated 40 year intervals (P1: 21–60 years; P2: 61–100 years; P3: 101–140 years) are compared with Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) models without FIREs. Both NOS configuration and CMIP5 models simulate longer life cycles of CP-El Niño events with weakening easterlies and warmer SST anomalies on the equator, persistently propagating eastward from the mature to dissipating phases. Compared to NOS, SON, on the other hand, produces a shorter CP-El Niño life cycle together with stronger easterlies and colder SSTs over the eastern to central equatorial Pacific. The magnitudes of the simulated westerlies and warm SST anomalies tend to diminish without eastward shifting following the peak of the CP-El Niño activity. There are substantial differences in CP-El Niño characteristics from P1 to P3 between NOS and SON. During P1, both SON and NOS show patterns which are consistent with their present-day counterparts. In P2 and P3, SON exhibits a prolonged CP-El Niño life cycle, while NOS develops a double-peak El Niño evolution at the mature and decaying phases. Regarding El Niño diversity and the projections, the CMIP5 models have not reached a consensus. The inclusion of the FIREs would increase the confidence in simulating El Niño future behavior.

Annual and seasonal mean tropical and subtropical precipitation biases in present-day climate simulations by phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models are evaluated. We analyze 23 CMIP6 models, which are grouped into those without (NOS) and with (SON) falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs). The SON group is further divided according to treatments of ice-cloud radiative properties with separate (SON2) and combined cloud ice and snow contents (SON1). SON2 mitigates precipitation bias drastically relative to NOS, but SON1 overestimates precipitation in the subtropics, which deteriorates its performance relative to SON2 and NOS. Large offsets between SON2 and SON1 and between SON and NOS contribute to the slight improvement of CMIP6 relative to CMIP5, largely due to the contribution of SON2. The different treatments of ice-cloud radiative properties between SON2 and SON1 seem to be potentially linked to differences in precipitation biases. Results suggest that further in-depth investigation of cloud ice–radiation–circulation interactions is required.

Sea salt aerosols (SSA), one of the most abundant aerosol species over the global oceans, play important roles for Earth’s climate. State-of-the-art SSA parameterizations in global climate models (GCMs) are typically modeled using near-surface wind speed, sea surface temperature (SST), and precipitation. However, these have non-trivial biases in CMIP3 and CMIP5 GCMs over the tropical Pacific Ocean that can contribute to biases in the simulated SSA. This study investigates the impacts of falling ice radiative effects on the biases of the aforementioned modeled parameters and the resulting modeled SSA biases. We compare the CMIP5 modeled SSA against satellite observations from MISR and MODIS using a pair of sensitivity experiments with falling ice radiative effects on and off in the CESM1-CAM5 model. The results show that when falling ice radiative effects are not taken into account, models have weaker surface wind speeds, warmer SSTs, excessive precipitation, and diluted sea surface salinity (SSS) over the Pacific trade-wind regions, leading to underestimated SSA. In the tropical Pacific Ocean, the inclusion of falling ice radiative effects leads to improvements in the modeled near-surface wind speeds, SSTs, and precipitation through cloud-precipitation-radiation-circulation coupling, which results in more representative patterns of SSA and reduces the SSA biases by ∼10% to 15% relative to the satellite observations. Models including falling ice radiative effects in CMIP5 produce smaller biases in SSA than those without falling ice radiative effects. We suggest that one of the causes of these biases is likely the failure to account for falling ice radiative effects, and these biases in turn affect the direct and indirect effects of SSA in the GCMs.

OBJECTIVES:Although betel quid (BQ) is an established risk factor of head and neck cancer (HNC), insufficiencies exist in the literature regarding the dose-response, BQ types, HNC sites, and BQ cessation. The current study was conducted to fill these insufficiencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS:A hospital-based case-control study was conducted to evaluate the association between BQ and HNC. In-person interview was conducted to collect data on BQ chewing. The current analysis included 487 men newly diagnosed with HNC and 617 male controls who were frequency-matched to the cases by age. The association between BQ and HNC was assessed using multivariable unconditional logistic regression. RESULTS:Ever BQ chewing was associated with an increased HNC risk regardless of the BQ types. A non-linear positive association between BQ and HNC was observed, with a steep rise in HNC risk for the first 5 pack-years or 200,000 minutes of BQ consumption. Every year of BQ cessation was associated with a 2.9% reduction in HNC risk; however, the risk did not reduce to the level of non-BQ chewers even after 20 years of BQ cessation. Eliminating BQ chewing may prevent 51.6% of HNCs, 62.6% of oral cancers, and 41.3% of pharyngeal cancers in Taiwan. CONCLUSION:Our results supported the positive association between BQ and HNC. BQ cessation is effective in reducing HNC risk and should be encouraged. Because BQ cessation may not reduce the HNC risk to the level of non-BQ chewers, it is important to prevent the initiation of BQ chewing.

Background/purpose: The Collum angle (the supplementary angle of the crown-root angle) of the maxillary central incisors is extremely important for patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment and who are to receive an implant restoration. However, there is no report on the Collum angle in Taiwanese. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the Collum angle of the maxillary central incisors in Taiwanese patients with different types of malocclusion. Materials and methods: This study collected 124 samples of lateral cephalometric radiographs (38 radiographs from male patients and 86 from female patients). The age of sampled patients ranged 8–58 (mean, 19.9) years. Samples were divided into four groups according to the malocclusion type, and the Collum angle of the maxillary central incisors in each group was measured. A one-way ANOVA and the Scheffe test were used to compare whether or not the angle differed among the groups. Results: The average value of the Collum angle was 6.1° ± 5.2° for class-I malocclusions, 5.3° ± 4.2° for class-II division-I malocclusions, 10.6° ± 4.4° for class-II division-2 malocclusions, and 5.6° ± 5.1° for class-III malocclusions. A statistical analysis showed that the Collum angle of the maxillary central incisors for patients with class-II division-2 malocclusions significantly exceeded values in the other three groups. Conclusion: Compared to groups with other malocclusion types, the Collum angle of natural teeth for patients with class-II division-2 malocclusions was the greatest.

Southern Ocean sea-ice cover exerts critical control on local albedo and Antarctic precipitation, but simulated Antarctic sea-ice concentration commonly disagrees with observations. Here we show that the radiative effects of precipitating ice (falling snow) contribute substantially to this discrepancy. Many models exclude these radiative effects, so they underestimate both shortwave albedo and downward longwave radiation. Using two simulations with the climate model CESM1, we show that including falling-snow radiative effects improves the simulations relative to cloud properties from CloudSat-CALIPSO, radiation from CERES-EBAF and sea-ice concentration from passive microwave sensors. From 50–70°S, the simulated sea-ice-area bias is reduced by 2.12 × 10 ^6 km ^2 (55%) in winter and by 1.17 × 10 ^6 km ^2 (39%) in summer, mainly because increased wintertime longwave heating restricts sea-ice growth and so reduces summer albedo. Improved Antarctic sea-ice simulations will increase confidence in projected Antarctic sea level contributions and changes in global warming driven by long-term changes in Southern Ocean feedbacks.

BACKGROUND: The current study evaluated the association between tea consumption and head and neck cancer (HNC) in Taiwan, where tea is a major agricultural product and a popular beverage. METHODS: Interviews regarding tea consumption (frequency, duration, and types) were conducted with 396 HNC cases and 413 controls. Unconditional logistic regression was performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of HNC risk associated with tea drinking, adjusted for sex, age, education, cigarette smoking, betel quid chewing, and alcohol drinking. RESULTS: A reduced HNC risk associated with tea drinking (OR for every cup per day = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.99; OR for ≧5 cups per day = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.39-0.94) was observed. The association was especially significant for pharyngeal cancer (OR for every cup per day = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88-0.98; OR for ≧5 cups per day = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.16-0.66). A significant inverse association between HNC and tea consumption was observed particularly for green tea. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that tea drinking may reduce the risk of HNC. The anticancer property of tea, if proven, may offer a natural chemopreventive measure to reduce the occurrence of HNC.

BACKGROUND: Although the relationship between allergy and cancer has been investigated extensively, the role of allergy in head and neck cancer (HNC) appears less consistent. It is not clear whether allergies can independently influence the risk of HNC in the presence of known strong environmental risk factors, including consumption of alcohol, betel quid, and cigarette. METHODS: THE CURRENT PAPER REPORTS RESULTS FROM: 1) an original hospital-based case-control study, which included 252 incident cases of HNC and 236 controls frequency-matched to cases on sex and age; and 2) a meta-analysis combining the results of the current case-control study and 13 previously published studies (9 cohort studies with 727,569 subjects and 550 HNC outcomes and 5 case-control studies with 4,017 HNC cases and 10,928 controls). RESULTS: In the original case-control study, we observed a strong inverse association between allergies and HNC [odds ratio = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.27-0.62]. The meta-analysis also indicated a statistically significant inverse association between HNC and allergies [meta-relative risk (RR) = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.63-0.91], particularly strong for allergic rhinitis (meta-RR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.40-0.76). In addition, the inverse association between allergies and HNC was observed only among men (meta-RR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.54-0.84) but not among women (meta-RR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.81-1.18). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that immunity plays an influential role in the risk of HNC. Future studies investigating immune biomarkers, including cytokine profiles and genetic polymorphisms, are warranted to further delineate the relationship between allergies and HNC. Understanding the relationship between allergies and HNC may help devise effective strategies to reduce and treat HNC.
