Abstract Background The mechanistic effects of gamma transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on hippocampal gamma oscillation activity in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify beneficial effects of gamma tACS on cognitive functioning in AD and to elucidate effects on hippocampal gamma oscillation activity. Methods This is a double-blind, randomized controlled single-center trial. Participants with mild AD were randomized to tACS group or sham group, and underwent 30 one-hour sessions of either 40 Hz tACS or sham stimulation over consecutive 15 days. Cognitive functioning, structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and simultaneous electroencephalography–functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) were evaluated at baseline, the end of the intervention and at 3-month follow-up from the randomization. Results A total of 46 patients were enrolled (23 in the tACS group, 23 in the sham group). There were no group differences in the change of the primary outcome, 11-item cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog) score after intervention (group*time, p = 0.449). For secondary outcomes, compared to the control group, the intervention group showed significant improvement in MMSE (group*time, p = 0.041) and MoCA scores (non-parametric test, p = 0.025), which were not sustained at 3-month follow-up. We found an enhancement of theta-gamma coupling in the hippocampus, which was positively correlated with improvements of MMSE score and delayed recall. Additionally, fMRI revealed increase of the local neural activity in the hippocampus. Conclusion Effects on the enhancement of theta-gamma coupling and neural activity within the hippocampus suggest mechanistic models for potential therapeutic mechanisms of tACS. In response to the shortcomings of traditional Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), such as low penetration, slow welding speed, and low production efficiency, an Ultra-High-Frequency Adjustable Multi-Pulse Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (UFMP-GTAW) process is proposed. This process more effectively concentrates the temperature distribution of the welding arc. To characterize the arc morphology and its dynamic changes, high-speed photography captured ten images of the UFMP-GTAW welding arc within one cycle. The arc image processing algorithm proposed in the paper was used to study the arc's variation characteristics over one cycle. This algorithm includes binarization, arc segmentation, and edge detection to obtain arc morphology parameters. The arc symmetry algorithm is used to symmetrize the arc images for Abel inversion, resulting in the emission coefficient distribution. Further calculations provide the temperature distribution, electrical conductivity distribution, and current density distribution of the arc. Analysis reveals that changes in arc temperature, electrical conductivity, and current density lag behind changes in current. The temperature of the arc spreads from the central axis to the surrounding arc space. When high-frequency current variations occur, the heat input generated by the current increase takes time to transfer to the entire arc space. Conversely, if the current suddenly decreases, the heat input rapidly diminishes. However, because heat transfer takes time, the arc space remains relatively stable for a short period, making the ultra-high-frequency arc form more stable.

Abstract Orofacial cleft (OFC) is a common human congenital anomaly. Epithelial-specific RNA splicing regulators ESRP1 and ESRP2 regulate craniofacial morphogenesis and their disruption result in OFC in zebrafish, mouse and humans. Using esrp1/2 mutant zebrafish and murine Py2T cell line models, we functionally tested the pathogenicity of human ESRP1/2 gene variants. We found that many variants predicted by in silico methods to be pathogenic were functionally benign. Esrp1 also regulates the alternative splicing of Ctnnd1 and these genes are co-expressed in the embryonic and oral epithelium. In fact, over-expression of ctnnd1 is sufficient to rescue morphogenesis of epithelial-derived structures in esrp1/2 zebrafish mutants. Additionally, we identified 13 CTNND1 variants from genome sequencing of OFC cohorts, confirming CTNND1 as a key gene in human OFC. This work highlights the importance of functional assessment of human gene variants and demonstrates the critical requirement of Esrp-Ctnnd1 acting in the embryonic epithelium to regulate palatogenesis.

Abstract Although computerized cognitive training (CCT) is an effective digital intervention for cognitive impairment, its dose-response relationship is understudied. This retrospective cohort study explores the association between training dose and cognitive improvement to find the optimal CCT dose. From 2017 to 2022, 8,709 participants with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and mild dementia were analyzed. CCT exposure varied in daily dose and frequency, with cognitive improvement measured weekly using Cognitive Index. Abstract Background Legionella pneumonia is one of the most severe types of atypical pneumonia, impairing multiple organ systems, posing a threat to life. Diagnosing Legionella pneumonia is challenging due to difficulties in culturing the bacteria and limitations in immunoassay sensitivity and specificity. Case presentation This paper reports a rare case of sepsis caused by combined infection with Legionella pneumophila and Fusobacterium necrophorum, leading to respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, acute liver injury, myocardial damage, and electrolyte disorders. In addition, we systematically reviewed literature on patients with combined Legionella infections, analyzing their clinical features, laboratory results and diagnosis. Conclusions For pathogens that require prolonged incubation periods and are less sensitive to conventional culturing methods, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can be a powerful supplement to pathogen screening and plays a significant role in the auxiliary diagnosis of complex infectious diseases.

Abstract With its high energy consumption and pollutant emissions, the iron and steel industry is a significant source of air pollution and carbon emissions in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region. To improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a series of policies involving ultra-low emission, synergistic reduction of pollution, and carbon application have been implemented in the region. This study has assessed air pollutant and CO2 emission patterns in the iron and steel industry of the region by employing co-control effects coordinate system, marginal abatement cost curve, and numerical modeling, along with the synergistic benefits of typical technologies. The results have demonstrated that: (1) the intensive production activities pertinent to iron and steel enterprises has contributed greatly to the emission in Tangshan and Handan, where the sintering process is the main source of SO2, NOx, PM2.5, and CO, accounting for 64.86%, 55.15%, 29.98%, and 46.43% of the total emissions, respectively. (2) Among the typical pollution control and reduction measures, industrial restructuring and adjustment of the energy-resource structure have led to the greatest effects on emission reduction. Technologies exhibiting great potential in emission reduction and high-cost efficiency such as Blast Furnace Top Gas Recovery Turbine Unit (TRT) need to be promoted. (3) In Tangshan city with the highest level of steel production, the iron and steel production activities contributed to the concentration of 30.51% of PM2.5, 50.67% of SO2, and 42.54% of NO2 during the non-heating period. During the heating period, pollutants pertinent to the combustion of fossil energy for heating have increased, while iron and steel induced emissions have decreased to 23.7%, 34.32%, and 29.13%, respectively. By 2030, it is speculated that the contribution of the iron and steel industry to air quality will be significantly decreased as result of successful implementation of ultra-low emission policies and typical synergistic reduction technologies.

Abstract When unperturbed, granular materials form stable structures that resemble the ones of other amorphous solids like metallic or colloidal glasses. Whether or not granular materials under shear have an elastic response is not known, and also the influence of particle surface roughness on the yielding transition has so far remained elusive. Here we use X-ray tomography to determine the three-dimensional microscopic dynamics of two granular systems that have different roughness and that are driven by cyclic shear. Both systems, and for all shear amplitudes Γ considered, show a cross-over from creep to diffusive dynamics, indicating that rough granular materials have no elastic response and always yield, in stark contrast to simple glasses. For the system with small roughness, we observe a clear dynamic change at Γ ≈ 0.1, accompanied by a pronounced slowing down and dynamical heterogeneity. For the large roughness system, the dynamics evolves instead continuously as a function of Γ. We rationalize this roughness dependence using the potential energy landscape of the systems: The roughness induces to this landscape a micro-corrugation with a new length scale, whose ratio over the particle size is the relevant parameter. Our results reveal the unexpected richness in relaxation mechanisms for real granular materials.

Abstract Protein arginine methyltransferase 9 (PRMT9) is a recently identified member of the PRMT family, yet its biological function remains largely unknown. Here, by characterizing an intellectual disability associated PRMT9 mutation (G189R) and establishing a Prmt9 conditional knockout (cKO) mouse model, we uncover an important function of PRMT9 in neuronal development. The G189R mutation abolishes PRMT9 methyltransferase activity and reduces its protein stability. Knockout of Prmt9 in hippocampal neurons causes alternative splicing of ~1900 genes, which likely accounts for the aberrant synapse development and impaired learning and memory in the Prmt9 cKO mice. Mechanistically, we discover a methylation-sensitive protein–RNA interaction between the arginine 508 (R508) of the splicing factor 3B subunit 2 (SF3B2), the site that is exclusively methylated by PRMT9, and the pre-mRNA anchoring site, a cis-regulatory element that is critical for RNA splicing. Additionally, using human and mouse cell lines, as well as an SF3B2 arginine methylation-deficient mouse model, we provide strong evidence that SF3B2 is the primary methylation substrate of PRMT9, thus highlighting the conserved function of the PRMT9/SF3B2 axis in regulating pre-mRNA splicing.

Abstract This study focuses on CO2 capture by pressure swing adsorption (PSA), with modified clinoptilolite as the adsorbent. Natural clinoptilolite is modified by roasting, by acid pickling, by a combination of acid pickling and roasting, and by ion exchange. Modification by acid pickling–roasting and by ion exchange are found to give the highest CO2 adsorption capacities, of 730 mL/g and 876.7 mL/g, respectively. It is found that regeneration of clinoptilolite by a combination of vacuum desorption and heating enables recovery of as much as 89% of its previous CO2 adsorption capacity. To examine the CO2 adsorption capacity of clinoptilolite when applied to mixed gas, a simulated coking exhaust containing 12% CO2 and 4% O2 is used, and it is found that ion exchange modified clinoptilolite achieves a CO2 removal efficiency of 92.5%. A BET test reveals that acid pickling–roasting and Na+ modification enhance the porosity of clinoptilolite, thereby improving its adsorption capacity. This work demonstrates the feasibility of applying modified clinoptilolite as an effective adsorbent for CO2 capture, providing a promising tool for dealing with greenhouse gases.

This work explored the changes in production decision-making trends of Chinese steel enterprises under the influence of the carbon border adjustment mechanism. First, using evolutionary game theory, the interactive mechanism of complex production strategies among steel enterprises considering the carbon border adjustment mechanism was studied, including the impact of government subsidy coefficients, additional profits and carbon tax prices on enterprise decision-making. Second, the influence of key parameters on the dynamic evolutionary process was analysed. On this basis, the empirical simulation method was used to verify the game model and the main conclusions. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the selected parameters was determined using Matlab software. The results showed that additional profits from green investment, government subsidy coefficients, input-output values and carbon tax prices had a higher impact on the evolution of enterprise production strategies. The results of this study provide a decision-making basis for the selection of future production methods for steel enterprises.

BackgroundBeyond the direct effect of COVID-19 infection on young people, the wider impact of the pandemic on other infectious diseases remains unknown. ObjectiveThis study aims to assess changes in the incidence and mortality of 42 notifiable infectious diseases during the pandemic among children and adolescents in China, compared with prepandemic levels. MethodsThe Notifiable Infectious Disease Surveillance System of China was used to detect new cases and fatalities among individuals aged 5-22 years across 42 notifiable infectious diseases spanning from 2018 to 2021. These infectious diseases were categorized into 5 groups: respiratory, gastrointestinal and enterovirus, sexually transmitted and blood-borne, zoonotic, and vector-borne diseases. Each year (2018-2021) was segmented into 4 phases: phase 1 (January 1-22), phase 2 (January 23-April 7), phase 3 (April 8-August 31), and phase 4 (September 1-December 31) according to the varying intensities of pandemic restrictive measures in 2020. Generalized linear models were applied to assess the change in the incidence and mortality within each disease category, using 2018 and 2019 as the reference. ResultsA total of 4,898,260 incident cases and 3701 deaths were included. The overall incidence of notifiable infectious diseases decreased sharply during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) compared with prepandemic levels (2018 and 2019), and then rebounded in 2021, particularly in South China. Across the past 4 years, the number of deaths steadily decreased. The incidence of diseases rebounded differentially by the pandemic phase. For instance, although seasonal influenza dominated respiratory diseases in 2019, it showed a substantial decline during the pandemic (percent change in phase 2 2020: 0.21, 95% CI 0.09-0.50), which persisted until 2021 (percent change in phase 4 2021: 1.02, 95% CI 0.74-1.41). The incidence of gastrointestinal and enterovirus diseases decreased by 33.6% during 2020 but rebounded by 56.9% in 2021, mainly driven by hand, foot, and mouth disease (percent change in phase 3 2021: 1.28, 95% CI 1.17-1.41) and infectious diarrhea (percent change in phase 3 2020: 1.22, 95% CI 1.17-1.28). Sexually transmitted and blood-borne diseases were restrained during the first year of 2021 but rebounded quickly in 2021, mainly driven by syphilis (percent change in phase 3 2020: 1.31, 95% CI 1.23-1.40) and gonorrhea (percent change in phase 3 2020: 1.10, 95% CI 1.05-1.16). Zoonotic diseases were not dampened by the pandemic but continued to increase across the study period, mainly due to brucellosis (percent change in phase 2 2020: 0.94, 95% CI 0.75-1.16). Vector-borne diseases showed a continuous decline during 2020, dominated by hemorrhagic fever (percent change in phase 2 2020: 0.68, 95% CI 0.53-0.87), but rebounded in 2021. ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a marked decline in notifiable infectious diseases in Chinese children and adolescents. These effects were not sustained, with evidence of a rebound to prepandemic levels by late 2021. To effectively address the postpandemic resurgence of infectious diseases in children and adolescents, it will be essential to maintain disease surveillance and strengthen the implementation of various initiatives. These include extending immunization programs, prioritizing the management of sexually transmitted infections, continuing feasible nonpharmaceutical intervention projects, and effectively managing imported infections.

The stability of slurries used for chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a crucial concern in industrial chip production, influencing both the quality and cost-effectiveness of polishing fluids. In silicon wafer polishing, the conventional use of commercial neutral silica sol combined with organic bases often leads to slurry instability. To address this issue, this study proposes organic amines—specifically ethanolamine (MEA), ethylenediamine (EDA), and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH)—as catalysts for synthesizing alkaline silica sol tailored for silicon wafer polishing fluids. Sol–gel experiments and zeta potential measurements demonstrate the efficacy of this approach in enhancing the stability of silica sol. The quantitative analysis of surface hydroxyl groups reveals a direct correlation between enhanced stability and increased hydroxyl content. The application of the alkaline silica sol in silicon wafer polishing fluids improves polishing rates and enhances surface flatness according to atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, electrochemical experiments validate the capability of this polishing solution to mitigate corrosion on silicon wafer surfaces. These findings hold significant implications for the advancement of chemical mechanical polishing techniques in the field of integrated circuit fabrication.

BackgroundAn accelerated epidemiological transition, spurred by economic development and urbanization, has led to a rapid transformation of the disease spectrum. However, this transition has resulted in a divergent change in the burden of infectious diseases between urban and rural areas. The objective of our study was to evaluate the long-term urban-rural disparities in infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths in China, while also examining the specific diseases driving these disparities.Methods and findingsThis observational study examined data on 43 notifiable infectious diseases from 8,442,956 cases from individuals aged 4 to 24 years, with 4,487,043 cases in urban areas and 3,955,913 in rural areas. The data from 2013 to 2021 were obtained from China's Notifiable Infectious Disease Surveillance System. The 43 infectious diseases were categorized into 7 categories: vaccine-preventable, bacterial, gastrointestinal and enterovirus, sexually transmitted and bloodborne, vectorborne, zoonotic, and quarantinable diseases. The calculation of infectious disease incidence was stratified by urban and rural areas. We used the index of incidence rate ratio (IRR), calculated by dividing the urban incidence rate by the rural incidence rate for each disease category, to assess the urban-rural disparity. During the nine-year study period, most notifiable infectious diseases in both urban and rural areas exhibited either a decreased or stable pattern. However, a significant and progressively widening urban-rural disparity in notifiable infectious diseases was observed. Children, adolescents, and youths in urban areas experienced a higher average yearly incidence compared to their rural counterparts, with rates of 439 per 100,000 compared to 211 per 100,000, respectively (IRR: 2.078, 95% CI [2.075, 2.081]; p < 0.001). From 2013 to 2021, this disparity was primarily driven by higher incidences of pertussis (IRR: 1.782, 95% CI [1.705, 1.862]; p < 0.001) and seasonal influenza (IRR: 3.213, 95% CI [3.205, 3.220]; p < 0.001) among vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis (IRR: 1.011, 95% CI [1.006, 1.015]; p < 0.001), and scarlet fever (IRR: 2.942, 95% CI [2.918, 2.966]; p < 0.001) among bacterial diseases, infectious diarrhea (IRR: 1.932, 95% CI [1.924, 1.939]; p < 0.001), and hand, foot, and mouth disease (IRR: 2.501, 95% CI [2.491, 2.510]; p < 0.001) among gastrointestinal and enterovirus diseases, dengue (IRR: 11.952, 95% CI [11.313, 12.628]; p < 0.001) among vectorborne diseases, and 4 sexually transmitted and bloodborne diseases (syphilis: IRR 1.743, 95% CI [1.731, 1.755], p < 0.001; gonorrhea: IRR 2.658, 95% CI [2.635, 2.682], p < 0.001; HIV/AIDS: IRR 2.269, 95% CI [2.239, 2.299], p < 0.001; hepatitis C: IRR 1.540, 95% CI [1.506, 1.575], p < 0.001), but was partially offset by lower incidences of most zoonotic and quarantinable diseases in urban areas (for example, brucellosis among zoonotic: IRR 0.516, 95% CI [0.498, 0.534], p < 0.001; hemorrhagic fever among quarantinable: IRR 0.930, 95% CI [0.881, 0.981], p = 0.008). Additionally, the overall urban-rural disparity was particularly pronounced in the middle (IRR: 1.704, 95% CI [1.699, 1.708]; p < 0.001) and northeastern regions (IRR: 1.713, 95% CI [1.700, 1.726]; p < 0.001) of China. A primary limitation of our study is that the incidence was calculated based on annual average population data without accounting for population mobility.ConclusionsA significant urban-rural disparity in notifiable infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths was evident from our study. The burden in urban areas exceeded that in rural areas by more than 2-fold, and this gap appears to be widening, particularly influenced by tuberculosis, scarlet fever, infectious diarrhea, and typhus. These findings underscore the urgent need for interventions to mitigate infectious diseases and address the growing urban-rural disparity.

Abstract Cooperative control of high‐speed trains can improve the safety and efficiency of high‐speed railway transportation. However, the velocity and distance overshoots in the cooperative control of multiple high‐speed trains is an undesirable behavior, which will lead to unsafe and inefficient train operation. To address this issue, a cooperative predictive set point modulation control approach for high‐speed trains is proposed. First, the cyber‐physical modeling of multiple high‐speed trains is presented. The longitudinal dynamic characteristics of high‐speed trains are established in the physical layer, and the cyber layer represents the communication topology of high‐speed trains based on graph theory. Second, a cooperative control rule is designed to achieve the velocity consensus and maintain safe distance between adjacent trains. Moreover, the set point automatic adjustment with correction enable (SPAACE) is leveraged to smoothly adjust the set‐point of high‐speed trains to suppress the overshoots of train velocities and inter‐train distance. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is verified in three different simulation scenarios: normal, acceleration and deceleration conditions. The simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the maximum relative displacement by 62% and the velocity error by 34%.

Abstract Long-read RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a powerful technology for transcriptome analysis, but the relatively low throughput of current long-read sequencing platforms limits transcript coverage. One strategy for overcoming this bottleneck is targeted long-read RNA-seq for preselected gene panels. We present TEQUILA-seq, a versatile, easy-to-implement, and low-cost method for targeted long-read RNA-seq utilizing isothermally linear-amplified capture probes. When performed on the Oxford nanopore platform with multiple gene panels of varying sizes, TEQUILA-seq consistently and substantially enriches transcript coverage while preserving transcript quantification. We profile full-length transcript isoforms of 468 actionable cancer genes across 40 representative breast cancer cell lines. We identify transcript isoforms enriched in specific subtypes and discover novel transcript isoforms in extensively studied cancer genes such as TP53. Among cancer genes, tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) are significantly enriched for aberrant transcript isoforms targeted for degradation via mRNA nonsense-mediated decay, revealing a common RNA-associated mechanism for TSG inactivation. TEQUILA-seq reduces the per-reaction cost of targeted capture by 2-3 orders of magnitude, as compared to a standard commercial solution. TEQUILA-seq can be broadly used for targeted sequencing of full-length transcripts in diverse biomedical research settings.

The findings underscore the complexity of phase transitions in binary systems and advocate for a nuanced approach to studying molecular structures and behaviours.

Abstract Background Previous studies have found a correlation between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and changes in brain structure and cognitive function, but it remains unclear whether COVID-19 causes brain structural changes and which specific brain regions are affected. Herein, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate this causal relationship and to identify specific brain regions vulnerable to COVID-19. Methods Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for COVID-19 phenotypes (28,900 COVID-19 cases and 3,251,161 controls) were selected as exposures, and GWAS data for brain structural traits (cortical thickness and surface area from 51,665 participants and volume of subcortical structures from 30,717 participants) were selected as outcomes. Inverse-variance weighted method was used as the main estimate method. The weighted median, MR-Egger, MR-PRESSO global test, and Cochran’s Q statistic were used to detect heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Results The genetically predicted COVID-19 infection phenotype was nominally associated with reduced cortical thickness in the caudal middle frontal gyrus (β = − 0.0044, p = 0.0412). The hospitalized COVID-19 phenotype was nominally associated with reduced cortical thickness in the lateral orbitofrontal gyrus (β = − 0.0049, p = 0.0328) and rostral middle frontal gyrus (β = − 0.0022, p = 0.0032) as well as with reduced cortical surface area of the middle temporal gyrus (β = − 10.8855, p = 0.0266). These causal relationships were also identified in the severe COVID-19 phenotype. Additionally, the severe COVID-19 phenotype was nominally associated with reduced cortical thickness in the cuneus (β = − 0.0024, p = 0.0168); reduced cortical surface area of the pericalcarine (β = − 2.6628, p = 0.0492), superior parietal gyrus (β = − 5.6310, p = 0.0408), and parahippocampal gyrus (β = − 0.1473, p = 0.0297); and reduced volume in the hippocampus (β = − 15.9130, p = 0.0024). Conclusions Our study indicates a suggestively significant association between genetic predisposition to COVID-19 and atrophy in specific functional regions of the human brain. Patients with COVID-19 and cognitive impairment should be actively managed to alleviate neurocognitive symptoms and minimize long-term effects.

Abstract The emergence of ionic-junction devices has attracted growing interests due to the potential of serving as signal transmission and translation media between electronic devices and biological systems using ions. Among them, fiber-shaped iontronics possesses a great advantage in implantable applications owing to the unique one-dimensional geometry. However, fabricating stable ionic-junction on curved surfaces remains a challenge. Here, we developed a polyelectrolyte based ionic-junction fiber via an integrated opposite charge grafting method capable of large-scale continuous fabrication. The ionic-junction fibers can be integrated into functions such as ionic diodes and ionic bipolar junction transistors, where rectification and switching of input signals are implemented. Moreover, synaptic functionality has also been demonstrated by utilizing the fiber memory capacitance. The connection between the ionic-junction fiber and sciatic nerves of the mouse simulating end-to-side anastomosis is further performed to realize effective nerve signal conduction, verifying the capability for next-generation artificial neural pathways in implantable bioelectronics.

Abstract Objective : Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) stands as a leading cause of death and disability globally. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors linked with AIS in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) and to create and validate nomogram models. Methods: We examined the medical records of 314 patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD5) undergoing MHD, who sought neurology outpatient department consultation for suspected AIS symptoms between January 2018 and December 2023. These 314 patients were randomly divided into the training cohort (n=222) and validation cohort (n=92). The Least Absolute Shrinkage Selection Operator (LASSO) regression model was employed for optimal feature selection in the AIS risk model. Subsequently, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to construct a predictive model incorporating the features selected through LASSO. This predictive model's performance was assessed using the C-index and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Additionally, calibration and clinical utility were evaluated through calibration plots and decision curve analysis (DCA). The model's internal validation was conducted using the validation cohort. Resaults: Predictors integrated into the prediction nomogram encompassed cardiovascular disease (CVD) (Odds Ratio [OR] 7.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.400-29.979), smoking (OR 5.7, 95% CI 1.661-21.955), dialysis time (OR 5.91, 95% CI 5.866-29.979), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (OR 2.99, 95% CI 0.751-13.007), and fibrin degradation products (FDP) (OR 5.47, 95% CI 1.563-23.162). The model exhibited robust discrimination, with a C-index of 0.877 and 0.915 in the internal training and validation cohorts, respectively. The AUC for the training set was 0.857, and a similar AUC of 0.905 was achieved in the validation cohort. Decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated a positive net benefit within a threshold risk range of 2 to 96%. Conclusion: The proposed nomogram effectively identifies MHD patients at high risk of AIS at an early stage. This model holds the potential to aid clinicians in making preventive recommendations.

Abstract Background In China, the plerocercoid of the cestode Spirometra mansoni is the main causative agent of human and animal sparganosis. However, the population genetic structure of this parasite remains unclear. In this study, we genotyped S. mansoni isolates with the aim to improve current knowledge on the evolution and population diversity of this cestode. Methods We first screened 34 perfect simple sequence repeats (SSRs) using all available omic data and then constructed target sequencing technology (Target SSR-seq) based on the Illumina NovaSeq platform. Next, a series of STRUCTURE. clustering, principal component, analysis of molecular variance and TreeMix analyses were performed on 362 worm samples isolated from 12 different hosts in 16 geographical populations of China to identify the genetic structure. Results A total of 170 alleles were detected. The whole population could be organized and was found to be derived from the admixture of two ancestral clusters. TreeMix analysis hinted that possible gene flow occurred from Guizhou (GZ) to Sichuan (SC), SC to Jaingxi (JX), SC to Hubei (HB), GZ to Yunnan (YN) and GZ to Jiangsu (JS). Both neighbor-joining clustering and principal coordinate analysis showed that isolates from intermediate hosts tend to cluster together, while parasites from definitive hosts revealed greater genetic differences. Generally, a S. mansoni population was observed to harbor high genetic diversity, moderate genetic differentiation and a little genetic exchange among geographical populations. Conclusions A Target SSR-seq genotyping method was successfully developed, and an in-depth view of genetic diversity and genetic relationship will have important implications for the prevention and control of sparganosis. IntroductionWe aimed to investigate the association between greenness around schools, long-term gaseous air pollution exposure (SO2 and CO), and blood pressure in children and adolescents.MethodsFrom 2006 to 2018, a total of 219,956 Chinese children and adolescents aged 7–17 years in Beijing and Zhongshan were included in this longitudinal study. Annual average concentrations of SO2 and CO and the mean values of normalized difference vegetation index around schools were calculated. We used the generalized estimation equation model, restricted cubic spline model, and Cox model to analyze the health effects.ResultsAmong all the subjects, 52,515 had the first onset of HBP. During the follow-up, HBP's cumulative incidence and incidence density were 23.88% and 7.72 per 100 person-year respectively. Exposures to SO2 and CO were significantly associated with SBP [β = 1.30, 95% CI: (1.26, 1.34) and 0.78 (0.75, 0.81)], DBP [β = 0.81 (0.79, 0.84) and 0.46 (0.44, 0.48)] and HBP [HR = 1.58 (1.57, 1.60) and 1.42 (1.41, 1.43)]. The risks of HBP attributed to SO2 and CO pollution would be higher in school-aged children in the low greenness group: the attributable fractions (AFs) were 26.31% and 20.04%, but only 13.90% and 17.81% in the higher greenness group. The AFs were also higher for normal-BMI children and adolescents in the low greenness group (AFs = 30.90% and 22.64%, but 14.41% and 18.65% in the high greenness group), while the AFs were not as high as expected for obese children in the low greenness group (AFs = 10.64% and 8.61%), nor was it significantly lower in the high greenness group (AFs = 9.60% and 10.72%).DiscussionGreenness could alleviate the damage effects of SO2/CO exposure on the risks of HBP among children and adolescents, and the benefit is BMI sensitivity. It might offer insights for policymakers in making effective official interventions to prevent and control the prevalence of childhood HBP and the future disease burden caused by air pollution.

Soft (flexible and stretchable) biosensors have great potential in real-time and continuous health monitoring of various physiological factors, mainly due to their better conformability to soft human tissues and organs, which maximizes data fidelity and minimizes biological interference. Most of the early soft sensors focused on sensing physical signals. Recently, it is becoming a trend that novel soft sensors are developed to sense and monitor biochemical signals in situ in real biological environments, thus providing much more meaningful data for studying fundamental biology and diagnosing diverse health conditions. This is essential to decentralize the healthcare resources towards predictive medicine and better disease management. To meet the requirements of mechanical softness and complex biosensing, unconventional materials, and manufacturing process are demanded in developing biosensors. In this review, we summarize the fundamental approaches and the latest and representative design and fabrication to engineer soft electronics (flexible and stretchable) for wearable and implantable biochemical sensing. We will review the rational design and ingenious integration of stretchable materials, structures, and signal transducers in different application scenarios to fabricate high-performance soft biosensors. Focus is also given to how these novel biosensors can be integrated into diverse important physiological environments and scenarios in situ , such as sweat analysis, wound monitoring, and neurochemical sensing. We also rethink and discuss the current limitations, challenges, and prospects of soft biosensors. This review holds significant importance for researchers and engineers, as it assists in comprehending the overarching trends and pivotal issues within the realm of designing and manufacturing soft electronics for biochemical sensing.

We analyze more than 15 yr of γ -ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) for the region of the young supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 103, since the nearby source 4FGL J1616.2−5054e, counterpart to HESS J1616−518 and ≃13′ away from the SNR, is determined to be extended in the more recent Fermi-LAT source catalog. Different templates for 4FGL J1616.2−5054e and RCW 103 are tested, and we find that a point source (PS) with a power-law (PL) spectrum at the southern limb of the SNR best describes the detected γ -ray emission. The photon index of the PL emission is Γ ≃ 2.31 (or α ≃ 2.4 in a log-parabola model), softer than the previously reported Γ ≃ 2.0 when the counterpart to HESS J1616−518 was considered to be a PS (which likely caused misidentification of extended emission at RCW 103). In order to produce the γ -ray emission in a hadronic scenario, we estimate that protons with an index ∼2.4 PL energy distribution are needed. These results fit with those from multiwavelength observations that have indicated the remnant at the southern limb is interacting with a molecular cloud.

Intrigued by recent high-energy study results for nearby galaxies with γ -ray emission and in particular NGC 1068 that has been detected as a neutrino-emitting source by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we conduct a detailed analysis of the γ -ray data of the galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 253, obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi γ -ray Space Telescope. By checking their possible spectral features and then constructing light curves in the corresponding energy ranges, we identify spectral-change activity from NGC 1068 in the ≥2 GeV energy range and long-term, statistically significant changes for NGC 253 in the ≥5 GeV energy range. In the former, the emission appears harder in two half-year periods than in the otherwise “quiescent” state. In the latter, an ∼two-fold decrease in the detection significance after MJD = 57023 is clearly revealed by the test-statistic maps we obtain. Considering the previous studies carried out and the various models proposed for the γ -ray emissions of the two sources, we discuss the implications of our findings. We suspect that a jet (or outflow) in NGC 1068 might contribute to the γ -ray emission. The nature of the long-term statistically significant changes for NGC 253 is not clear, but since the part of the GeV emission may be connected to the very-high-energy (VHE) emission from the center of the galaxy, it could be further probed with VHE observations.

Using the γ -ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) for ∼14 yr, we examine the high-energy emission emanating from the center of the Andromeda galaxy M31. Different from previously reported results, which show a seemingly extended source, we instead find two individual point sources, one consistent with being at the center and one 0.°4 southeast of the center. The emission of the former is well described using a log-parabola model, similar to those of previous studies, and that of the latter can be fitted with a power law. We discuss the possible origins for the two sources. M31's central source, now consistent with being a point source, necessitates a revisit of its previously discussed originations with this new property taken into consideration, in particular those cosmic rays or dark matter scenarios involving extended source distributions. The SE source appears to have a projected distance of ∼6 kpc from M31's center, and the investigation is required as to whether it is a source locally associated with M31, or is instead a background extragalactic one.

IntroductionIntercropping has a potential to reduce the CO2 emission from farmlands. Limited information is available on the underlying reasons.MethodsThis study investigated the effect of milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) (MV), rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) monoculture (RS) and intercropping (Intercrop) on soil CO2 emissions, moisture and temperature in a bucket experiment during 210 days from October 2015 to May 2016 on Chongqing, China.ResultsThe results showed that soil CO2 efflux of MV, RS and Intercrop was 1.44, 1.55 and 2.08 μmol·m-2·s-1 during seedling and stem elongation stages and 3.08, 1.59 and 1.95 μmol·m-2·s-1 during flowering and podding stages. At seeding and stem elongation stages Intercrop had 1.4 times higher soil CO2 efflux than the mean of MV and RS. In contrast, MVhad 1.6 times higher soil CO2 efflux than Intercrop thereafter, which shows it was inhibited if milk vetch presents as Intercrop only. Decreased sensitivity of soil respiration to temperature in 1.4 times and lower soil moisture by Intercrop were found compared to MV. Intercrop decreased soil moisture, especially at the seedling and stem elongation stages, compared to the monoculture. The fluctuation on soil respiration in RS and Intercrop was slight with changes in soil moisture.ConclusionThus, milk vetch-rapeseed system has a potential to decrease CO2 emission from farmland, however soil moisture should be regulated properly.

BackgroundCardiovascular health (CVH) in children and adolescents, which might be largely influenced by parental behaviors, may affect the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. However, few studies have been conducted to explore the associations between parental behaviors and CVH status of offspring in China.MethodsData were obtained from a cross-sectional survey conducted in Chinese children and adolescents aged 7–18 years old, with a total of 10,043 parent–offspring pairs included. Parental behaviors included moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), dietary behaviors, and weight status. The CVH status of offspring was consulted by The American Heart Association, including seven factors. The associations between parental behaviors and CVH status of offspring were evaluated by multilevel logistic regression. Stratified analyses were conducted to explore the potential modifying influence of sociodemographic factors.ResultsMost of the offspring had five ideal CVH factors; only 21.04% had six to seven ideal CVH factors. Parental unhealthy behaviors were associated with high odds of nonideal CVH status of offspring. Parental overweight/obesity, insufficient MVPA, and unhealthy dietary behaviors could increase the odds of owning one to three ideal CVH factors in offspring, with corresponding odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval) of 1.61 (1.32–1.96), 1.31 (1.10–1.56), and 2.05 (1.43–2.94), respectively. Introduction: Detection and diagnosis of MRSA are important in ensuring a correct and effective treatment, further reducing its spread. There are a wide range of molecular approaches for the diagnosis of AMR in MRSA, including PCR, MLST and SCCmec. This review aims to study and appraise current molecular diagnostic methods used for the detection of MRSA. Method: This narrative review was performed by searching the PubMed using the following search terms: (molecular diagnosis) AND (antimicrobial resistance) NOT (review [publication type)) NOT (systematic review [publication type)) NOT (meta-analysis[publication type)) AND (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus). Studies using molecular diagnostic techniques for the detection of MRSA were included, while non-English language, duplicates, and non-article studies were excluded. After reviewing the libraries and a further manual search, 20 studies were included in this paper. RAMESES publication standard for narrative reviews was used for this synthesis. Results: Of the 20 studies included, 11 studies employed PCR for diagnosing MRSA , 2 studies on DNA Microarray, Xpert MRSA/SA BC assay (n=1), MALDI-TOF (n=2), MLST (n=5) and SCCMec typing (n=1). Discussion: Different diagnostic methods used for the diagnosis of MRSA have been studied in this review. Each diagnostic technique have its benefits and drawbacks, however, this study concludes that PCR has been extensively used due to its increased sensitivity and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract Materials with asymmetric nanostructures have attracted tremendous research attention due to their unique structural characteristics, excellent physicochemical properties, and promising prospects. However, it is still difficult to design and fabricate bullet‐shaped nanostructure due to its structural complexity. Herein, for the first time, we successfully constructed NIR light‐propelled bullet‐shaped hollow carbon nanomotors (BHCNs) with an open mouth on the bottom of nano‐bullet for the enhanced dye removal, by employing bullet‐shaped silica nanoparticles (B‐SiO2 NPs) as a hard template. BHCNs were formed by the growth of polydopamine (PDA) layer on the heterogeneous surface of B‐SiO2 NPs, followed by the carbonization of PDA and subsequent selective etching of SiO2. The shell thickness of BHCNs was able to be facilely controlled from ≈ 14 to 30 nm by tuning the added amount of dopamine. The combination of streamlined bullet‐shaped nanostructure with good photothermal conversion efficiency of carbon materials facilitated the generation of asymmetric thermal gradient field around itself, thus driving the motion of BHCNs by self‐thermophoresis. Noteworthily, the diffusion coefficient (De) and velocity of BCHNs with shell thickness of 15 nm (BHCNs‐15) reached to 43.8 μm⋅cm−2 and 11.4 μm⋅s−1, respectively, under the illumination of 808 nm NIR laser with the power density of 1.5 W⋅cm−2. The NIR laser propulsion caused BCHNs‐15 to enhance the removal efficiency (53.4% vs. 25.4%) of methylene blue (MB) as a typical dye because the faster velocity could produce the higher micromixing role between carbon adsorbent and MB. Such a smart design of the streamlined nanomotors may provide a promising potential in environmental treatment, biomedical and biosensing applications.

Abstract Background The relationship between psoriasis and hepatitis C was previously controversial, so our purpose is to investigate this connection. Methods We conducted a systematic review of the case–control, cross-sectional and cohort studies examining the association between psoriasis and hepatitis C in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane library databases and investigated the overlapping genes between psoriasis targets and hepatitis C targets using bioinformatics analysis. Based on overlapping genes and hub nodes, we also constructed the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and module respectively, followed by the pathway enrichment analysis. Results We included 11 publications that reported a total of 11 studies (8 cross-sectional and 3 case–control). The case–control and cross-sectional studies included 25,047 psoriasis patients and 4,091,631 controls in total. Psoriasis was associated with a significant increase of prevalent hepatitis C (OR 1.72; 95% confidence interval [CI] (1.17–2.52)). A total of 389 significant genes were common to both hepatitis C and psoriasis, which mainly involved IL6, TNF, IL10, ALB, STAT3 and CXCL8. The module and pathway enrichment analyses showed that the common genes had the potential to influence varieties of biological pathways, including the inflammatory response, cytokine activity, cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, which play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C and psoriasis. Conclusion Patients with psoriasis display increased prevalence of hepatitis C and the basic related mechanisms between hepatitis C and psoriasis had been preliminarily clarified.

PurposeTo report the design and baseline data of a 3-year cohort study in Beijing Pinggu District primary school students in China after COVID-19.MethodsNoncycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) were measured, ocular biometry, including the axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and corneal power (CP), were collected before cycloplegia. Corneal radius (CR), AL-to-CR ratio, and lens power (LP) were calculated.ResultsAmong the 4,806 (89.1%) eligible students (51.5% male), the prevalence of emmetropia, myopia, mild hyperopia, and mild-to-high hyperopia was 12.8, 30.8, 53.0, and 3.3% after cycloplegia, respectively. Myopia increased from 2.5% in 6- to 71.6% in 12-year-old students, with 9- and 10-year-olds showing the most prominent increases. The median of cycloplegic SER was 0.50 (IQR = 1.63), and the noncycloplegic SER was −0.38 D (IQR = 1.50), which is more negative than the cycloplegic refraction. The mean AL increased with age, from 22.46 ± 0.70 mm to 24.26 ± 1.07 mm. The ACD increased from 3.38 ± 0.28 mm to 3.70 ± 0.30 mm, and the AL-to-CR ratio increased from 2.91 ± 0.08 to 3.12 ± 0.13 between 6- and 12-year-old students. AL, CR and LP explained the SER variance with R2 of 86.4% after adjusting the age and gender.Conclusions and RelevanceThe myopia prevalence since emergence of COVID-19 rapidly increased from 6- to 12-year primary school Chinese children, especially after 7 years of age. The non-cycloplegia SER overestimated the prevalence of myopia, and the cycloplegic SER is a more accurate and reliable method to assess the prevalence of refractive status.

Abstract Background A-to-I RNA editing diversifies the transcriptome and has multiple downstream functional effects. Genetic variation contributes to RNA editing variability between individuals and has the potential to impact phenotypic variability. Results We analyze matched genetic and transcriptomic data in 49 tissues across 437 individuals to identify RNA editing events that are associated with genetic variation. Using an RNA editing quantitative trait loci (edQTL) mapping approach, we identify 3117 unique RNA editing events associated with a cis genetic polymorphism. Fourteen percent of these edQTL events are also associated with genetic variation in their gene expression. A subset of these events are associated with genome-wide association study signals of complex traits or diseases. We determine that tissue-specific levels of ADAR and ADARB1 are able to explain a subset of tissue-specific edQTL events. We find that certain microRNAs are able to differentiate between the edited and unedited isoforms of their targets. Furthermore, microRNAs can generate an expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) signal from an edQTL locus by microRNA-mediated transcript degradation in an editing-specific manner. By integrative analyses of edQTL, eQTL, and microRNA expression profiles, we computationally discover and experimentally validate edQTL-microRNA pairs for which the microRNA may generate an eQTL signal from an edQTL locus in a tissue-specific manner. Conclusions Our work suggests a mechanism in which RNA editing variability can influence the phenotypes of complex traits and diseases by altering the stability and steady-state level of critical RNA molecules.

To meet the challenge of preparing a high-resolution compound eye, this paper proposes a multi-focal-length meniscus compound eye based on MEMS negative pressure molding technology. The aperture is increased, a large field of view angle of 101.14° is obtained, and the ommatidia radius of each stage is gradually increased from 250 μm to 440 μm. A meniscus structure is used to improve the imaging quality of the marginal compound eye so that its resolution can reach 36.00 lp/mm. The prepared microlenses have a uniform shape and a smooth surface, and both panoramic image stitching and moving object tracking are achieved. This technology has great potential for application in many fields, including automatic driving, machine vision, and medical endoscopy.

Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is widely indicated in the treatment of several ocular disorders, but the free drug suspension limits its clinical benefits and commercial compositions cause adverse ocular effects. In this study, TA was formulated in poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)-chitosan (PLC) nanoparticles (NPs) for the treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases. TA-loaded PLC NPs exhibited excellent anti-inflammatory activity against human corneal epithelial (HCE) cells and significantly reduced the secretion of interleukin (IL)-6 in tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α activated cells. In a rabbit model, TA-loaded PLC NPs did not show any typical clinical signs of eye inflammation and significantly alleviated inflammatory signs, compared with free TA suspension, at 24 h after a single dose. TA-loaded PLC NPs exhibited a greater aqueous humour transparency (%AHT), compared with that of normal saline (NS) or free TA suspension, indicating reduction in anterior chamber fogginess. Pharmacokinetic analysis of rabbit eyes revealed that TA-loaded PLC NPs peaked at 6 h. Substantial concentrations of TA were observed until 24 h, indicating the superiority of this PLC-based nanocarrier system. Overall, PLC-based NP formulations offer a new approach for the treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases.

Summary: Background: There is growing interest in the role that schools can play in promoting student health. The aim of this study was to describe the coverage of school health monitoring systems for infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and school physical environments in China, and to explore differences by geography, regional wealth, and school type. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using data from 2428 schools from 17 provinces in China in 2018. Data were collected using a questionnaire administered by the Ministry of Education through its monitoring system, and included infectious diseases (e.g., reporting system for student infectious diseases), non-communicable diseases (e.g., regular student health examinations), and school physical environments (e.g., monitoring of classroom light, microclimate and drinking water). Findings: Overall, the coverage rate of full school health monitoring systems was 16·6%. The coverage rates of school health monitoring systems for infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and school physical environments were 71·2%, 68·5%, and 24·9%, respectively. Coverage was higher in schools from urban rather than rural areas, in schools from areas with greater wealth, and in senior secondary schools rather than junior secondary and primary schools. Interpretation: Systems for monitoring infectious diseases in school students have been widely implemented in China. Systems for monitoring non-communicable diseases and physical environments need to be strengthened. Beyond greater attention in poorer and rural areas, increased investment in more comprehensive approaches to school health is indicated. Abstract Background Recently, more and more men who have sex with men (MSM) look for casual partners through online dating platforms in China. However, most are unable to know their partners’ HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STD) statuses, leading to the rapid increase in HIV infection among Chinese MSM. Effective partner notification is urgently needed to increase the risk awareness of MSM and prevent HIV and other STDs transmission. However, the traditional intervention mainly targets to the HIV-positive MSM and the effect is not promising. Our study aims to provide Internet-based partner notification, along with a series of health services for HIV-negative MSM to protect them from HIV and other STDs. Methods A pragmatic stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial design is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a new intervention paradigm, which aims to reduce HIV and other STDs incidences among MSM in China. Through integrating a mobile health (mHealth) service application (app) to the current HIV and other STDs prevention and control methods, the new paradigm provides partner notification of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C statuses. A total of 6172 MSM in 16 districts of Beijing, China will be recruited and randomized to sequentially receive partner notification intervention through the app at 6-month intervals. The primary outcomes are HIV incidence and the additional cost of the intervention. The secondary outcomes include incidences of syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, disease transmission social networks, testing adherence, knowledge of HIV and STDs control, health self-responsibility awareness, changes of high risk behaviors and other related outcomes. The generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) will be used to analyze the differences of outcomes in the control period and in the intervention period. Discussion We expect that the HIV incidence will be significantly lower and the secondary outcomes will also be improved with providing health service of partner notification through mhealth intervention. The feasible and affordable public health intervention paradigm will have implications for HIV and STDs prevention and control among MSM and other key populations. Abstract Prostate cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers and the main causes of cancer‐related deaths in males. Various articles introduced that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are found in vital functions in the development and progression of cancers. Although SNHG3 (small nucleolar RNA host gene 3) has been investigated in many cancers, now researches on the role and mechanism of SNHG3 in prostate cancer are lacked. In this work, SNHG3 exerted high expression in prostate cancer cell lines. Suppression of SNHG3 inhibited cell proliferation, migration, EMT (epithelial‐mesenchymal transition) process and promoted cell apoptosis. Additionally, it was found that SNHG3 could bind with miR‐577. Subsequently, SMURF1 (Smad ubiquitination regulatory factor 1) was identified as a downstream target of miR‐577 and had a negative correlation with miR‐577. SNHG3 was found to positively regulate SMURF1 expression. Furthermore, rescue assays demonstrated that co‐transfection of pcDNA3.1/SMURF1 reversed the effects of SNHG3 knockdown in cell proliferation, migration, EMT process and cell apoptosis. SNHG3 also promoted tumorigenesis in vivo. All the results above explained that SNHG3 accelerated prostate cancer progression by sponging miR‐577 to up‐regulate SMURF1 expression, suggesting that SNHG3 may act as a biomarker for prostate cancer patients.

The vertical waste heat recovery technology of the sinter in the iron and steel industry will be a great driving force for China to realize the “double Carbon” in the near future. For promoting the application of the new technology, the influence of the confined wall on the pressure distribution and pressure drops of the gas flow in the sinter bed was experimentally studied. For the irregular sinter with the rough surface, the gas pressure near the wall is higher than that at the center. Moreover, the radial distribution of the dimensionless pressure is nearly the same at different gas velocities. Therefore, whatever flow state the gas is in, the wall effect on irregular sinters only reduces the pressure drop of the gas flow, which is different from that on spherical particles. The vertical wall limits the randomness and uniformity of the particle accumulation, which is further intensified with the increase of the particle irregularity and particle size. Therefore, the confined wall causes a greater difference in the gas pressure between the wall and the center. With the particle size increasing from 5~10 mm to 55~60 mm, the ratio of the gas pressure between the wall and the center increases from 1.03 to 1.26. If the wall effect is ignored, the pressure drop of the gas flow would be overestimated by 16.01% on average, whereas the correlation of the wall correction can well predict the pressure drop with the mean error and maximum error of 2.74% and 9.48%, respectively.

To establish an accurate model to optimize the vertical cooling process of the sinter, the inverse problem method is used to calculate the gas-solid heat transfer coefficient based on the gas outlet temperature, which is fitted into the correlation. The research indicates that the increase in the gas velocity is beneficial to the enhancement of the gas-solid heat transfer. With the gas velocity ug increasing from 0.8 m·s-1 to 1.6 m·s-1, the heat transfer coefficient hv increases by about twice. But this effect will weaken with the increase in the particle size. Besides, the reduction of the particle size is conducive to improving the convective heat transfer intensity between the gas and solid. With the particle size decreasing, this enhancement effect is progressively evident. At ug of 0.8 m·s-1, the increasing extent of hv is 1142.25 W·m-3·K-1 with the particle size decreasing from 20~25 mm to 15~20 mm, while that is 3152.65 W·m-3·K-1 with the particle size decreasing from 15~20 mm to 10~15 mm. In addition, the variation of the measured value of the Nusselt number with the Reynolds number has the same trend as predicted values obtained by other works. However, there is a considerable deviation in the value. Among them, the minimum value of the mean relative error is 26.81%. It is proved that the previous empirical correlations are no longer applicable, while the predicted value of this work is in good agreement with the measured value with the mean deviation of only 7.61%. Therefore, the modified correlation can accurately predict the gas-solid heat transfer characteristics in the sinter bed, which lays a foundation for the numerical design and optimization of the new process.

PSR J0631+1036 is a middle-aged pulsar with properties similar to those of the nearby Geminga pulsar. It is bright in γ -rays, and has been noted as the only source possibly associated with the TeV source 3HWC J0631+107 (also the LHAASO J0631+1040). For understanding the nature of the TeV source, we analyze the GeV γ -ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope for the source region. We are able to remove the pulsar’s emission from the region from timing analysis, and find that the region is rather clean without possible GeV γ -ray emission present as the counterpart to the TeV source. By comparing this pulsar to Geminga and considering the spectral feature of the TeV source, we argue that it is likely the TeV halo powered by the pulsar.

Very-high-energy (VHE) observations have revealed approximately 100 TeV sources in our Galaxy, and a significant fraction of them are under investigation to understand their origin. We report our study of one of them, HESS J1844−030. It is found to be possibly associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) candidate G29.37 + 0.1, and detailed studies of the source region at radio and X-ray frequencies have suggested that this SNR is a composite one, containing a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) powered by a candidate young pulsar. As the GeV source 4FGL J1844.4−0306 is also located in the region with high positional coincidence, we analyze its γ -ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We determine the GeV γ -ray emission is extended, described with a log-parabola function. The obtained spectrum can be connected to that of the VHE source HESS J1844−030. Given these properties and those from multifrequency studies, we discuss the origin of the γ -ray emission by considering that the two γ -ray sources are associated. Our modeling indicates that while the TeV part would have either a hadronic (from the SNR) or a leptonic origin (from the putative PWN), the GeV part would arise from a hadronic process. Thus we conclude that 4FGL J1844.4−0306 is likely the GeV counterpart to G29.37 + 0.1.

We report on the detection of a γ -ray source at the position of the nearby star-forming galaxy (SFG) M83, which is found from our analysis of 14 yr of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). The source is weakly detected, with a significance of ∼5 σ , and its emission can be described with an exponentially cutoff power law. At a distance of 4.61 Mpc, the source’s γ -ray luminosity is ∼1.4 × 10 ^39 erg s ^−1 , roughly along the correlation line between the γ -ray and IR luminosities determined for nearby SFGs. Because of the weak detection, the source spectrum can not be used for checking its similarity with those of other SFGs. Given the positional matches and the empirical expectation for γ -ray emission from M83 due to the galaxy’s star-forming activity, we conclude that the γ -ray source is the likely counterpart to M83. The detection thus adds another member to the group of approximately a dozen SFGs, whose γ -ray emissions mostly have a cosmic-ray origin.

We report our analysis results for the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6341 (M92), as a millisecond pulsar (MSP) J1717+4308A has recently been reported found in this GC. The data used are from the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). We detect γ -ray pulsations of the MSP at a 4.4 σ confidence level (the corresponding weighted H-test value is ∼28.4). This MSP, the fourth γ -ray pulsar found in a GC, does not have significant off-pulse emission and has γ -ray luminosity and efficiency 1.3 × 10 ^34 erg s ^−1 and 1.7%, respectively. In order to have a clear view on the properties of the known GC γ -ray MSPs, we reanalyze the Fermi-LAT data for the other three ones. These four MSPs share the properties of either having high $\dot{E}$ (∼10 ^36 erg s ^−1 ) or being in the GCs that contain only limited numbers of known MSPs. In addition, we find that PSRs J1823−3021A and B1821−24, in NGC 6624 and NGC 6626, respectively, have detectable off-pulse γ -ray emission and PSR J1835−3259B in NGC 6652 does not. Using the obtained off-pulse spectra or spectral upper limits, we constrain the numbers of other MSPs in the four GCs. The results are consistent with the numbers of the radio pulsars reported in them. While at least in NGC 6624 and NGC 6626, the contribution of other MSPs to their observed γ -ray emission can not be ignored, our study indicates that the presence of a bright MSP could be the dominant factor for whether a GC is detectable at γ -rays or not.
